That band that has that one song in Guitar Hero 3 that sucks to play because it has no hammer-ons? Y

That band that has that one song in Guitar Hero 3 that sucks to play because it has no hammer-ons? Yeah, that band has been doing quite a bit since the release of the post-hardcore song off their breakthrough album “Doppelganger.” The release of that album created a rift in the pantheon of Fall of Troy fans, it split the base into the camp that liked the crazier hardcore stuff off of the Self-Titled album and the majority of the songs off of Doppelganger and the casual fans who had heard F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X and wanted a more pop-punk feel. The band did nothing to stop this alienation with their release of “Manipulator”, an album that mixed pop-punk ballads with the frenetic math rock from their original albums. It didn’t help that “Ex-Creations” was one of the band’s heaviest singles. After their bassist, Tim Ward, left the band and the band recruited Frank Ene of “…Of Stalwart Fads,” the band decided to release a re-recording of one of their early Eps with Phantom on the Horizon taking the concept behind the Ghostship demo and expanding upon it. This gave the band yet another polarizing dimension to their music by making an album to be digested as one whole piece rather than separate parts.

The 6th marked their first proper release since Manipulator with In the Unlikely Event. The album seems like a return to the bands pop sense with songs like “Panic Attack!” and “Single.” However, this album has more of a sense of wanting to do everything that the band has done before all at once. If you’ve been looking for a post-hardcore release that does not rely so heavily on metalcore like so many bands today, check itout as it’s just $10 from amazon.com in either CD or MP3 download form.

Also, tomorrow at the Electric Factory, one of my favorite bands, the Mars Volta, are playing at 8 PM in support of their new album Octahedron. I’ll be going to the show so hopefully I’ll some pictures and a report of the show later that day or Sunday. This is the first time I’ll see them live and it’ll be interesting as they’ve been touring without theirwind performer Adrián Terrazas-González or their secondary guitarist/sound manipulator Paul Hinojos. This is probably to create a tighter and simpler sound similar to that on Octahedron which was comparatively less complex to the band’s other offerings. However, according to a review of show in boston done by boston.com’s Scott McLennan, they’ve been doing just fine without them. Look for full coverage tomorrow and a review of the concert itself.

As just a little mini-aside, I’m glad Portugal. the Man is finally getting the attention they deserve. After their set at Bonnaroo, they’ve been interviewed all over the place and have been selling out their shows with Drug Rug (including the one I wanted to go to at the Bowery Ballroom in New York). Rollingstone.com did a profile on the band after they played two reportedly great sets at a Lollapalooza at Bonaroo earlier this year. Spin had some choice words for the band’s performance at Lollapalooza in Chicago back in August. “Though the band members barely moved, the music never sat still. The brainy Alaskans can sometimes sound like they’re trying to stuff more into a song than the music can hold, but at a festival, where the possibility of hearing another, better band is always present, Portugal’s zany, unpredictable mash-ups had the wonderfully counter-intuitive effect of keeping the listener rapt.” (Spin.com’s “Best & Worst of Lollapalooza: Day 3” by David Marchese.)

The band’s new album, The Satanic Satanist, has all the inner wrappings of a poppy Beatles album with the indie sense that’s always kept the band so interesting. Ever since the band’s first release with “Waiter: You Vultures!” in 2006 the band has consistently put out solid albums, all with a different feel to them while still remaining distinct to Portugal’s (The band) style. With four full length albums already under the belt over the past 3 years with styles ranging from post-hardcore to folk, they are a band that anyone can get into. Check out their music video for Do You off their new album below and give their constantly updated site a look at http://www.portugaltheman.net.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-33" title="1149611598_56ec60a8d1_o" src="http://thebrokengstring.wordpress.com/files/2009/10/1149611598_56ec60a8d1_o.jpg?w=300" alt="Thomas Erak of the Fall of Troy at the Vault 350 in Long Beach, California.
That band that has that one song in Guitar Hero 3 that sucks to play because it has no hammer-ons?

Portugal. the Man's new album, The Satanic Satanist.

The band’s new album, The Satanic Satanist, has all the inner workings of a poppy Beatles album with the indie sense that’s always kept the band so interesting. Ever since the band’s first release Waiter: You Vultures! in 2006 the band has consistently put out solid albums, all with a different feel to them while still remaining distinct to Portugal’s (The band) style. With four full length albums already under the belt over the past 3 years with styles ranging from post-hardcore to folk, they are a band that anyone can get into. Check out their music video for Do You off their new album below and give their constantly updated site a look at portugaltheman.net.

As promised here is the long awaited post on my one of my fashion icons and favorite singers,Kelis

I have been in love with this chick, her style and music randomly catching her video on Muchmusic, one lazy summer afternoon back in 1999

I stopped dead in my tracks as i saw this beautiful girl with a mass of colorful curls in a baby blue restraining jacket of all things, screaming at the top of her lungs at all those cheating men out there

I was like who is this?

She has 4 albums under her belt

She gained mainstream success with Tasty which was released in 2003 and produced one of the summer’s biggest scorcher’s ”Milkshake”

Kelis has always been a style chameleon and is never one to shy away from experimenting with her hair, nails, and attire

(Peep the yellow nail polish)

But the edge still remained in matter of weeks,Kelis began experimenting on her hair

she shaved the sides

and dyed it every imaginable color under the sun

With her future ex boo, rapper Nas, I love these two…aw….

I really hope they work out their problems

Kelis even rocked a mohawk for a bit

Swagger on a 100,000 trillion!

Her versatile outlook on fashion is always effortless

And she just knows what works for her

On a personal,Kelis inspired my own tragus piercing…so dope…

Classic, but modern and edgy looks are her staple

I love the fact that she seems to forecast looks that are bound to be copied…..

Kelis was doing things her way when chicks were still holding on to their 16” yaki 1B and midriff tops

Kelis is now mommy to a baby boy named Knight, but that does not mean that she has forgotten her unique sense of style

She is rumored to be launching a cookbook, accessories and shoe line, get confirmation on new projects through her twitter

I can’t wait to see what trends she will set next, but most of all I can’t wait for the new music

I found this on Youtube while looking for some interviews about veganism and vegetarianism. It’s a refreshingly positive news broadcast CNN did June of last year. They talked about everything from Oprah trying a vegan diet to reducing your carbon footprint. They also have a taste test with vegan Chef Mateo, proving that vegan cuisine is more than granola and vegetables. Commentary also includes scholars explaining the facts of how your diet can affect the environment. They even address how food consumption has a larger impact on the environment than any transportation does! At the end they wrap up with an interview with Russel Simmons, celebrity vegan, and talk about his book, Do You! and his reasons for being vegan. Not only does he recommend going vegan for health and ethical reason but because the meat you consume produces more carbon emissions than your car!

I watched this video from Drama Dupree talking about Atlanta Pride last week.. So I decided to share my feelings on “homosexuality”

They are simply: DO YOU!!

I do not consider myself to be hetero- or homo- sexual.. I am just sexual..

I have never dated, had sex with or even kissed another girl.. however I have no problem with people who do.. much the same.. I dont have a problem with gay men.. now I will admit that seeing two men caressing each other throws me off.. but.. please.. if they are happy.. LET THEM BE!!

I say that I am just -sexual.. because that is what I feel I am.. I love men.. and am attracted to men and date men.. have sex w/ men.. you get it..

But.. I will never say never.. There are plently of beautiful women in the world who like women.. and I would be lying if I said that I would NEVER talk to one.. why not!? I am just living my life as the wind blows.. so if it blows me towards a woman who wants to treat me with respect and love.. then so be it..

On that note.. I do not tolerate hate.. I believe that God made us to be human.. and we are imperfect.. I don’t know if people are born straight/gay or if they choose those paths.. and frankly.. I don’t care.. if being with another man or woman makes you happy.. then be happy..

There are plenty of straight people in unhappy relationships.. I’d rather see you gay and happy than straight and miserable ANY DAY..

I have much love for anybody who is true to themselves.. our society has f’d us up to believe that we cannot be true to who we are and who we love..

Be who you are honey.. I love em all!!

This is a shoutout to all my friends who live so-called alternative lifestyles.. and to all of you people who believe you’re normal.. YOU’RE NOT!!!

On that note.. watch the video.. Drama Dupree cracks me the hell up!!!

*there will be no hatred tolerated on my blog, if you have disrespectful or hateful comments, keep them to yourself*

Top Ten Records Of The Summer By: Paul G. Atkinson IV The summer is almost over. Officially, fall do

Top Ten Records Of The Summer

By: Paul G. Atkinson IV

The summer is almost over. Officially, fall doesn’t kick in until September 22nd, but for many the splendor of summer ended when classes started. Personally, I’m still holding on to the freedom of the season by spinning the best records that the past three months had to offer. There was a lot to sort through: from Green Day’s widely publicized “21st Century Breakdown” to the wildly obscure “Constellations” from Christian metal riff masters August Burns Red. However, I’m only bringing you the albums that were blasting on the beach, in the car cruising with the windows down, in smoke filled rooms, and at late hang outs under the stars. In no particular order, here are the top ten albums from the summer of 2009:

Album: Horehound

Band: The Dead Weather

The latest musical offering from White Stripes bluesman Jack White is a super group of sorts featuring members from The Kills, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Raconteurs. This is a dirty blues-rock record with a wide range of sonic flashbacks. A few songs sound like they were stolen straight from the song books of Led Zeppelin, while others are closer to Bob Dylan, and some are even as punk rock as The Clash. Horehound is a wild ride of pure rock and roll.

Key Tracks: “Hang You From The Heavens” and “Treat Me Like Your Mother”

Album: This Will Be The Death Of Us

Band: Set Your Goals

Pop punk is not dead! Coming back strong on their sophomore record, Set Your Goals have created a record that captures the speed, energy, and ferocity of hardcore punk, but with the infectious hooks, sing-a-long choruses, and positive mindset of pop-punk acts like New Found Glory and blink-182. The album covers everything from lost love and tour stories to torture and political reform. This a CD that never has to leave your car.

Key Tracks: “Look Closer” and “The Fallen…”

Album: Old Crows/Young Cardinals

Band: Alexisonfire

Alexisonfire started as an act most called “Screamo” – which normally combines harsh screams with moody melodious signing. However, after a long break the band is back together and reinvented. The new record combines punk rock yells and earthy indie rock crooning to create an equally diverse, but fresh, new sound. With songs of love and oppression, this is a record for a riot.

Key Tracks: “Young Cardinals” and “Sons of Privilege”

Album: Wilco (The Album)

Band: Wilco

If you have neglected Wilco until now, this is the album for you. After pushing the boundaries of the Alt-Country genre on a series of critically acclaimed albums, the band has come back from its experimental fringe to a refined, intelligent, and easily accessible sound. Don’t let the “Country” tag through you off, there’s more rock and roll and folk to hear on this album than most would expect. Wilco (The Album) is a self-aware record to play quiet and relax to, or to turn up and rock out to.

Key Tracks: “Wilco (The Song)” and “Bull Black Nova”

Album: …In Shallow Seas We Sail

Band: Emery

After the band’s aimless third record and some musical meditation Emery is back and true to form. This record echoes the raw intensity of their debut record “The Weak’s End” but with all the layered melodies and crafty song writing that made their second album “The Question” full of songs that won’t leave one’s skull. Whether it’s harsh screams and breakdowns, or dueling counter-point vocals sung over ominous piano chords, this is some of the best that the post-hardcore genre has to offer.

Key Tracks: “Cutthroat Collapse” and “Butcher’s Mouth”

Album: The Satanic Satanist

Band: Portugal. The Man

Pushing past the bizarre band name and beyond the odd album title listeners will find a modern Beatles record. Every song offers a catchy chorus and straightforward song structure, but with experimental tones and thought-provoking lyrics. The piercing falsettos would make Robert Plant (of Led Zeppelin) proud, while the lower backing vocals are full of old southern soul. Though the sound on The Satanic Satanist is vintage it is far from stale; influences from Latin and Hip-Hop to Blues and Classic Rock are spread through out the record’s 11 tracks.

Key Tracks: “People Say” and “Do You”

Album: Happiness

Band: Dance Gavin Dance

This is a party record. From the technical standpoint of a music nerd I would call this an Experimental Emo/Progressive Post-Hardcore record, but in simple terms it’s really just fun. After what seemed like endless line-up changes, which left the drummer as the band’s only original musician, Dance Gavin Dance have finally solidified their members, and with that, their sound. Happiness is a bombastic blend of dancey choruses and hard rock energy. You can literally hear the clinking of glasses and the joyous murmur of good times on the song “Don’t Tell Dave” – a feeling echoed throughout Happiness.

Key Tracks: “Tree Village” and “Don’t Tell Dave”

Album: Salvation Is A Deep Dark Well

Band: The Builders and the Butchers

Refreshment for the ears: in a world of overused auto-tune it’s nice to hear a rusty tired soul reminiscent of Neil Young fronting a band. It almost feels as if The Builders and the Butchers’ instruments are covered in the dirt of the dust bowl, while the simplistic and pounding rhythms of the band’s two percussionists adds a genuine possibility that this band is some kind of folksy 1920s traveling group of troubadours. They carry the stories of the common man – of loss and love, of loneliness, but also of brotherhood.

Key Tracks: “Barcelona” and “Down In This Hole”

Album: It’s All Crazy! It’s All False! It’s All A Dream! It’s Alright

Band: MewithoutYou

MewithoutYou shed the Prog-Rock/Post-Hardcore sound of past releases and channeled the oddball indie rock sound of obscure rock heroes Neutral Milk Hotel. The band itself is stripped down and more acoustic and folky than ever, but with the help of some orchestral instrumentation the album has a full sound that finds trumpets, tubas, and bells dancing in and out of it’s timeless melodies. The parable-based subject matter draws from the Bible and the Qu’ran and begs the listener to follow the artsy imagery of Aaron Weiss’s lyrics into a realistic assessment of one’s purpose and passions.

Key Tracks: “Every Thought A Thought Of You” and “Timothy Hay”

Album: Farm

Band: Dinosaur Jr.

Reunions usually suck, but alt-rock pioneers Dinosaur Jr. have proven to be a pretty happy exception since reforming in 2007. Farm (the group’s second album since their original break-up in 1988) is jammed full with all the stuff that made Dinosaur Jr. great in the first place: Lou Barlow’s chugging bass, Murph’s pounding drums, and (most of all) singer-guitarist J Mascis’s laconic slacker drawl and ear-bleeding guitar solos. The latter is out with particular force on “I Don’t Wanna Go There,” which stretches over nine minutes with its extended soloing, showcasing the contrast between Mascis’s noisy guitar heroics and the quiet melody of his voice. Alright, so Farm may not sound too different from Dino’s early output, but that’s its inimitable strength too: no matter how many others try, it seems like only Dinosaur Jr. can write these songs this well.*

Key Tracks: “I Want You To Know,” “I Don’t Wanna Go There”

*Thank you to the resident Reporter Dinosaur Jr. expert Ryan Napier for the “Farm” review.

Honorable Mentions: The new records from Maylene & The Sons of Disaster, Therefore I Am, and Anchor & Braille.
