Having watched the Masters tennis from the O2 on Sky all last week I have plans in the near future to write a ‘test tennis’ piece about the astonishing standard in the mens game right now, and about the absurdity, particularly in the BBC, that surrounds Andrew Murray when Wimbledon comes around – he is just one of many very good players on the tour, but he is about to fall between two waves of greats, I think (how can I write about that happy prospect in a way that seems fair and unbeastly?). I also want to do something intelligent and unsentimental on National Hunt racing. Denman’s Hennessy Gold Cup at the weekend was an extraordinary accomplishment (too many superlatives already, ed). But I can only concentrate on one thing at a time and am busy trying to put together a book proposal so here is a picture of the legendary Milla. He is a softy, really. (Those who have read Walking Ollie will know of him, for others a previous post here says something about his ways.)

Zelva - dobermann

I helgen har jag tagit hand om hunden. Hon hade grymt tråkigt hemma hos mig. Det är så små ytor enligt hennes tycke. Jagar hon svanen så råkar hon slå huvudet in i väggen ungefär.
Fördelen med detta är att Zelva inte tvekar inför att ta på sig haltin när vi ska ut. I andra fall brukar hon springa iväg för att bli, antingen jagad eller mutad. Men eftersom det är, som sagt, dötrist hemma hos mig, sticker hon huvudet i haltin direkt och sätter sig och stirrar på dörren.

Jag passade på att sortera tidningar, kläder och plocka undan hemma nu när jag var så pass knuten. Därpå förberedde jag några julklappar.

Ramhultafallet

I söndags följde jag med en snabb sväng till landet och fotograferade. Vattenfallet var det minsann fart på, som ni kan se.

På onsdag blir det riktigt, riktigt roligt. Vi ska ha porträttmålning i oljemålningskursen. Jag missade just denna del förra terminen och det är den del jag sett mest fram emot.

Ich war heute mit Bettina bei Désirée Singenberger und Ihren Magyar Agar.

Diese aussergewöhnlichen Hunde haben mich sehr beeindruckt. Der Magyar Agar ist eine sehr alte ungarische Windhunderasse und in der Schweiz nur wenig verbreitet.

Die erwachsenen Hunde waren extrem freundlich und die Kleinen einfach zum knuddeln. Habe mich ein ganz kleines bisschen verliebt… Ich wusste nicht, dass Magyar Agars in ihrer Heimat nicht nur zur Jagd, sondern auch zum bewachen der Höfe eingesetzt wurden. Das, sowie auch der viel kräftgere Kopf, unterscheidet sie doch wesentlich von andern Windhunderassen. Auch macht sie ihr dichteres Fell der kälteren Jahreszeit gegenüber recht unempfindlich.

Vielen Dank Désirée und Rudel für die gewährte Gastfreundschaft! Es war für mich ein eindrückliches Zusammentreffen mit einer mir bis heute “in Natura” gänzlich unbekannten Hunderasse!

Was soll ich sagen? Ich glaubs einfach nicht!! Unsere Crashlady Leoni hat sich mitten in der Nacht im Garten wieder mal einen tiefen Dreiangel geholt. Musste Um 1.30 noch notfallmässig zum Tierarzt! Wie sie das gemacht hat? Tja, das wüsste ich auch gerne. Amiata scheint etwas zu wissen, sagt aber nichts… ;o(

Nun ist alles wieder genäht. Sieht nicht besonders schön aus und blutet auch immer noch ein bisschen. Leoni war aber sehr tapfer und hat ohne Narkose, nur mit Lokalanästhesie hingehalten. Gutes Mädchen,- wenn auch wieder teuer!! ich hoffe, dass alles ohne Komplikationen verheilt.

 Na ja – “Narben zieren den Krieger”

Die Informationsvorführung zum Thema Hunde Präventionsmassnahmen ist mit riesigem Wetterglück gut gelaufen. Wie vorauszusehen, war das Publikum ebenfalls sehr hundefreundlich, waren doch die meisten der Anwesenden selbst Hundehalter! Schade, dass die vielen Skeptiker sich nicht für einen solchen Anlass interessieren!!!

Spielerisch wird den Kindern beigebracht, wie sich ein Hund verhält. Die verschiedenen Teams besuchen schon seit einigen Jahren die Kindergärten und Schulen in Schaffhausen.

Das Sprüchlein heisst:
Stillä stoh, stille si, und wäg luägä!
Diese Kinder haben das schon richtig gut drauf!

Obwohl sowohl die Politiker, als auch hundefeindliche,- oder Menschen die vor Hunden Angst haben, unter den Zuschauern fehlten, war es eine gelungene Veranstaltung.

Zwei Mal Anklicken = Originalgrösse

Just got back from the vet’s – none too good today.  She has developed pressure sores under her bandages and is now on more tablets and the leg has to be left uncovered.  To make matters worse, to stop her licking the affected area, she now is wearing an Elizabethan collar (and is none too pleased!)We are back to the vet’s on Monday, hopefully she will have started to put a little weight on her injured leg.

Update – Saturday morning.

Leg very swollen, back to the vet’s.  Fortunately he had started antibiotics yesterday and by the time we arrived there, the leg had started to ease a little.  Back again Monday afternoon!

I have adopted the stance (stances can change) that there will not be one, not even a slim, melancholic volume about Lemon’s short and injury-prone time with us. However, this hardly precludes others from writing up their experiences. This morning I found myself actively encouraging Jeff, owner of Milla (or perhaps – and this was the prompt – in reality it is the other way round) to put pen to paper. Milla, a ruffian Dobermann rescued from the streets of London was one of Ollie’s early mates. He has his own short chapter in Walking Ollie and once featured in a column that trash daytime TV host Trisha Goddard used to write for the Eastern Daily Press.

Even by the standards of its category, Trisha’s column was particularly odious, consisting mainly of a sequence of boasts about the greatness of herself, her husband, her children (Little Missy 1 & Little Missy 2) and her fabulous lifestyle with its frequent flights to their little place in Cannes (quite a lot of complaints against baggage handlers in these passages). We see Trisha about the UEA sometimes, lyrcra-clad and power-walking her own small dog (she has the ipod headphones clamped on at all times to keep the public at bay). Milla turned up in her column because he took against her dog, and by extension took against her and apparently bit her on the backside (which I rather doubt). Trisha’s piece (as I recall it, it was some time ago) came dressed as a cry to other dog owners to keep their animals under control (even though her own pet goes loose and does do a bit of wandering off when the power walking becomes too tedious). In response to the column, and under one of my loonie-letter-writing pseudonyms, I wrote to the EDP suggesting that the animal in question (ie Milla, who, of course, I knew it to be) might be awarded a medal on behalf of all the women of Norfolk who had rather let themselves go and were not too bright either. This latter referred to a remark Trisha had been dim and conceited enough to make to Lynn Barber for a national newspaper interview (in the Observer) some while before. In Barber’s piece – which subsequently received huge local publicity – Trisha declared herself to be the only well-turned out and super-intelligent piece of crumpet to be found at the school gates come three o’clock, but, hey, wasn’t that was just one burden of living out in the sticks with the hicks (I hope you’re all keeping up at the back). Anyway, as you might imagine, as a consequence of this background, Trisha is not so popular in Norwich, and even though she was a columnist in the paper my letter still found its way into print under the headline ‘Ouch!’ and with an accompanying picture of Trisha looking pained beside it! This was a happy day for S Foster aka ‘Yours Sincerely, Sidney Bonkers.’

But back to Milla. The prompt for the book idea (My Adventures With Milla) came when Jeff said that owning the animal had rather curtailed his life. Though I knew something of what he meant by this, I asked him to expand. ‘Well,’ he said, ‘For instance, I used to love walking by the sea but we cannot do that anymore as Milla drinks it and then has projectile diarrhoea in the back of the car on the way home.’
‘Ah yes,’ I said, ‘That’s a good one. What else?’
‘Well, we can’t really go anywhere on holiday with him like we did with our other dogs.’
‘Why not?’ I asked.
Jeff looked at me as if to say, Do I really need to explain? This is rather obvious isn’t it: it’s because of his ‘general behaviour.’ (True enough, I had a few [big] paw marks about my midriff from where Milla, in his most traditional way, had made several efforts to mug me for biscuits. There is always some forensic evidence of a meeting with him.)

Milla is about seven now, Ollie would be the same age. Jeff and I picked them up at about the same time – when they were each somewhere between six and twelve months. Jeff went on to say that Milla’s real problem is that he is completely insecure, that it is only his routine that anchors him, that if things don’t happen in exactly the same way at the same time every day then he is easily freaked out. Ollie was a lot like that; maybe it is a common neurosis in a rescued animal.

After a short pause, and perhaps thinking about another good passage for his forthcoming bestseller, Jeff said that Milla was also the greediest animal he’d ever come across. Many dogs are principally motivated by food: Dylan is very greedy, and indeed Leo, an elderly golden Retriever (who makes a guest appearance in Along Came Dylan, and who is usually out walking alongside Milla) had been admonished by his owner, John, during this morning’s walk for scoffing something repulsive (possibly a tie-up from a sock) that he had found on a rugby pitch.
I asked Jeff for a specific. ‘Well,’ he said, ‘Take last night. Milla was asleep in his basket, by the radiator, snoring away…’ (here Jeff mimed the upside-down stance with the legs stretched akimbo towards the ceiling). Next thing, he said, Pam (Jeff’s wife) opens the fridge door, which is two room’s away and, ‘Milla flies out of his basket into the air as if the sniper’s bullet has just whistled past his ear…’

Was ist denn das?

Besser mal bewachen, das komische Ding…

Uups, da guckt doch was hervor?

Nun aber zurück in die Natur.

I’ve been asked by one or two people how Ellie’s getting on as I have posted nothing recently.  I have updated on flickr but I do apologise for not keeping my blog readers up to date.She was back at the vet’s last Friday and had her stitches removed.  She’s getting along ok but the back pad of her foot seems a little sore. She hasn’t got to go back to the vet’s until next Friday – we just have to put up with a Dobe with a thick pink leg!!

She’s quite happy now going outside – we take her into the garden on her lead then take it off if there are none of her furry friends about.  She has even started to get back into her old ways of barking just for the sake of it!  It was a nuisance before but sounds good now!

I think she is getting fed up with being in her bed so much but tolerates it pretty well – but she definitely misses playing with her ball.

Visit to the Vet’s – 26-10-2009

Back to the vet’s today. She put up her usual performance in the waiting room – whine, whine and more whine, but when she was being bandaged, as good as gold!
The leg looks pretty good after just a few days, and the scar looks very neat, well stitched.
The top bandage is black with a bit of blue top and bottom.  We did ask for tan but they hadn’t got any.

She seems more comfortable with this dressing, but it is difficult for her to lift it high enough when she gets on her bed – she has to raise her shoulder and lean to one side to get high enough.  It doesn’t bend at all.

Back for another dressing on Thursday.

Thursday 29th – on to the Green Period.Complete with hand-crafted wellie!

Very pleased with her progress at the vet’s.

Sadly, we have found out today that she has torn the tendons in her pastern and needs an operation.(20-10-09)

She staggered in, made it to her bed and that was that – flop!
We’ve seen the x-rays – 8 bolts 1 long screw 1 plate and a couple of bits of wire. She’ll never fall apart now! Back to the vet’s on Monday for new dressing and she’s got to keep a dressing on for about 8 weeks. No exercise. At the moment, no problem, but when she starts to feel better, oh boy!

Update 2

Today, Ellie has worked out which way is up and is much more like her old self. Last night was difficult in so far as she had to take a pain-killer with food but didn’t want to eat. A tin of sardines and some cheese may not sound too good, but it did the trick.

Wir haben mal wieder eine Bitte, aber diesmal geht es nicht um Spenden:

für die am 02.05.2000 geborene Kyki, eine Hovawart-Dobermann-Mischlingshündin, wird möglichst bald eine Pflegestelle gesucht. Sie ist 52 cm hoch, sollte nur angeleint ausgeführt werden, da sie sonst abhaut, ist freundlich, kann auch alleine bleiben und ist gesund.

Weniger gesund sind leider die jetzigen Halter. Kyki lebt zurzeit bei ihrem nierenkranken Frauchen, ihr Herrchen in einer betreuten WG. Der Frau fällt es zunehmend schwerer, dem Hund gerecht zu werden. Der Mann kann Kyki erst zu sich nehmen, wenn er in eine eigene Wohnung umgezogen ist und er möchte seine Hündin vorerst nicht ganz aufgeben. Ob sein Wunsch realistisch ist, muss die Zukunft zeigen. Er hat gesundheitlich schwere Zeiten hinter sich, hatte bereits 4 Herzinfarkte und Kyki hat ihm schon einmal das Leben gerettet.

Derzeit lebt Kyki in Gnarrenburg und ihr Herrchen in Bremen. Für den Fall, dass eine Pflegestelle in der Umgebung gefunden werden könnte, wäre ihr Herrchen dankbar, da er Kyki auch gerne mal besuchen kommen würde. In erster Linie geht es ihm aber darum, für Kyki eine gute Lösung zu finden.

Ellie the Dobermann

No railways or Chasewater this time, just about Ellie!

Out for our usual walk this morning before going to Chasewater and nearing the end – ’squirrel alert!’ – Off goes Ellie through the trees, flat out as ever, but this time the branch that she clattered into was as hard as her leg.At first, it was difficult to believe that she hadn’t broken something, she wouldn’t put any weight on it at all.  We got her home in a friend’s car and then it was off to the vet’s.  After much pulling and twisting (if it had been broken, I’m sure it would have fallen off!) he didn’t think that anything was broken but decided on an x-ray, just in case.  She hadn’t given as much as a whimper to tell where it hurt, and he could find no break on the x-ray so fingers crossed, a few quiet days and she should get back to normal.

We have to take her back in a couple of days for a check-up, at the moment she is heavily sedated and it is much too quiet in the house!

If anyone wants to know what she looks like on 4 legs, she is on a few of the photos on my posts ‘Brownhills Walk’ 1 & 2.  I think there are some more on flickr.

I shall put an update on this blog in a couple of days.

Saçmalık…

Üç ay önce üyelerimizden birisinden yardım isteyen bir mesaj aldık. Adana’da güzeller güzeli bir dişi Doberman’ı kurtarmıştı, Lina’yı.
Lina’ya köpek dövüşünün günden güne büyüyen bir problem olduğu bu şehirde bir ev bulamıyordu.

Ona köpeği İstanbul’a getirmesini ve burada ev bulabileceğimizi söyledim. Lina’nın şansı çok iyi gitmedi. Pansiyondan geçici aileye
gitti ancak hala sevgiyle ona bakacak bir aile bulamadı.

Acaba neden?

Bir taraftan sahibinden.com gibi siteler Doberman bebeklerini acaip fiyatlarla pazarlamaya devam ediyor. Fiyat önemsiz aslında.

Anlayamadığım neden barınaklar Lina gibi müthiş köpeklerle kaynarken kimin bir Doberman’a 2000 Euro verebildiği.

İşte bu mesaj üreticiden bir Doberman veya herhangi bir köpek satın almayı düşünenlere.  Mesaj şu:

Türkiye’de üretim standardı diye bir şey yok. Üreticiyim diye ortalıkta gezinip saf kan hayvan pazarlamaya çalışanların tek amacı çabuk para kazanmak. Bu ülkede soy ağacı yok. Bütün o “sözde” soyağacı belgeli Golden’lar köpek çiftliklerinden veya arka bahçe üreticilerinden geliyor (evet, sizde köpeğinizi üretmeyi düşünüyorsanız onlardan birisiniz demektir).

Cehalet rahatlatıcıdır ancak ev hayvanlarını etkileyen sorunların da kökeninde yatmaktadır.

Cehalet her yerde ve bizim vazifemiz, birer hayvansever olarak, onunla mücadele etmek.

İşte bu Lina, inanılmaz bir köpek. Harika bir karakter, hem hayvanlar hem de insanlarla arası son derece iyi, yumuşak huylu… Eğer bir Doberman arıyorsanız işte tam size göre kusursuz bir Doberman bu. Ama durun bir dakika, bizden köpek almak o kadar kolay değil. Öncelikl BENİ, SİZİN Lina için en iyi sahip olacağınıza inandırmanız gerekiyor ve bu sandığınız kadar kolay değil.

Absurdity..

Three months ago we answered the plea for help of one of our members.

She was in Adana and had rescued a beautiful female Dobermann, Lina.

She was having trouble finding a home for Lina in a city where dog fighting is becoming a growing problem.

I asked her to bring the dog to Istanbul and we would find her a home here.

Lina has not been lucky, from the pension she went to a foster home but she still hasn’t found a loving permanent home.

Why would that be?

On one hand websites like Sahibinden.com are filled with people offering Dobermann pups are exorbitant prices. The price is irrelevant
though. What is completely incomprehensible to me is why anyone would want to pay 2000 euros for a Dobermann in a country where there are hundreds of amazing dogs like Lina rotting away in municipal shelters.

So this is a message to all of those people who are currently out there, considering purchasing a Dobermann (or any other dog) from a
breeder.  The message is this:

THINK!!!!!!

There is no such a thing as breeding standards in Turkey. All those breeders you see all over the place trying to market you pure breed animals are nothing but scammers looking to make a fast buck. There are no real pedigrees in this country. All those Goldens with supposed pedigree doccuments were conceived and raised either in puppy mills, or by backyard breeders (yes, if you are thinking of breeding your dog YOU are one of those too).

Ignorance is bliss, but it is also the root of all problems affecting companion animals.

Ignorance is everywhere, and it is our duty (your duty as animal lover) to fight it.

So here she is.. Lina, and incredible dog. Great character, great with animals and people alike, beautiful temperament… if you are looking for a Dobermann here I have the perfect Dobermann for you. But hold on a second, getting a dog from us it’s not that easy. You are going to have to convince ME that YOU are the perfect owner for Lina, and this is not that easy.

It’s been a fun filled weekend of beach, sun & socialising. Quattro & Sam had a little introduction to ‘Ring craft’ over the weekend too. We’re going to need to trade our Halti for a Choke chain collar in the show ring …it looks really fab, but it’s a challenge for both Quattro & his handler (who is currently google-ing how to drive her dog with one!). Our first show is on Sunday so we have a bit of prep work to do this week.

Quattro needs to practice his smile and ’stack’ and we need people to pretend to be our judges so we don’t get nervous on the day… any volunteers?

Con este frase tan sencilla me explicaba el secreto de su éxito un MEGA-CRACK de las ventas con el que tuve la oportunidad de colaborar en una reunión de venta cruzada.

Pude asistir a un auténtico espectáculo (de buena gana hubiera pagado una entrada en primera fila). No hay más secreto que ponerle PASIÓN, una sobredosis de motivación, tener muy claro lo que quieres e ir a por ello, como un dobermann… me decía.

Esa misma mañana el cliente al teléfono: “Que venga… pero que sepas, que no tiene NADA que hacer”. A pesar de ello, hizo 500 kilómetros para ver a mi cliente. Pude ver como le daba la vuelta a una situación totalmente desfavorable. Cerro una operación que esa misma mañana la competencia (y el mismo cliente) daba por hecha!!

Confluyeron: Posicionamiento como experto, una excelente presentación, un conocimiento impecable del sector y de su producto, una historia bien elaborada con un objetivo claro, una comunicación perfecta, seguridad, pasión (mucha pasión), motivación (de lo profesional a lo personal), insistencia y lucha… además, el dobermann ya había clavado sus dientes.

Como dijo alguna vez Marco Tulio CICERÓN:

Cuanto mayor es la dificultad, mayor es la gloria.

Me ha parecido interesante cerrar este post con la descripción que hace wikipedia del carácter y temperamento de un dobermann (léase como si se estuviera describiendo el carácter de un comercial “dobermann”):

Vivaz, vigoroso, valiente, vigilante, tiene una expresión decidida e inquietante. Es un perro de carácter enérgico, orgulloso e impulsivo, que debe ser estable, asentado y sociable. Si no se lo trata como se debe puede ser un poco agresivo. No es un perro para cualquier amo. Necesita un dueño firme y tranquilo, que sepa imponerse con paciencia y afecto. Sumamente fiel, muy dependiente de la familia, demuestra una devoción ciega por su amo. Es un perro amigable y cariñoso sobre todo con los niños, aunque es necesaria la supervisión de los padres ya que el Dobermann tiende a jugar con mucha energía debido a su peso y musculatura, y puede derribar o golpear sin querer y poder hacer daño. Posee un sentido innato de la protección y es muy desconfiado con las personas extrañas. Este perro es frágil desde el punto de vista emocional y no soporta las relaciones conflictivas. Ausstellung in der Ursula Blickle Stiftung Unteröwisheim

Picasso und Warhol hatten Dackel, Schopenhauer hatte einen Pudel, Baselitz einen Spaniel und Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck hat Respekt vorm „Dobermann“. Das zumindest legt der knapp fünfminütige schwarz-weiß Film gleichen Titels nahe, mit dem der spätere Oscarpreisträger sein Filmregie-Studium an der Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film in München abschließt. Der Kurzfilm aus den Jahr 1999, der mit einem Ausrutscher in einem Hundehaufen beginnt und der in eine Verfolgungsjagd mündet, ist eine der skurrilen Arbeiten, die in der Ausstellung der Ursula Blickle Stiftung „Cocker Spaniel and Other Tools of International Understanding“ zu sehen ist.

Vom Jagd-, Wach-, Spür- und Kampfhund bis zum Schoßhündchen, das Spektrum der Mensch-Hund-Beziehung ist groß und ebenso die hundaffine Künstlerschar. Gemälde, Fotos, Skulpturen, Installationen zeigen neben einer Reihe von Videos, teils mit dokumentarischem Charakter wie Oleg Kuliks „Mad Dog Performance“, die Bandbreite vom Hundeadel einer Fotostrecke rassiger Windhunde (Jo Longhurst: „I know, what you’re thinking“) bis zum großformatigen Gemälde des Siegers bei einem Wettbewerb der hässlichsten Pinscher (Santiago Ydánez: „Untiteled Dog“).

Namhafte Maler wie Baselitz („Ein roter Hund abwärts“), Immendorff („Frontis-Piss“) und Cosima von Bonin („Dickwurst d’accord“) sind ebenso verstörend, wie die „Meute“, acht präparierte Kampfhunde von Jochem Hendricks, „Misfit“, ein Hybrid hinter Glas aus Pitbull und Reh von Thomas Grünfeld oder tierisch-satirischen Anwandlungen wie „Aus der Mappe der Hundigkeit“ (was übersetzt für Zynismus steht) Peter Weibel, der sich von Valie Export auf allen Vieren an der Leine Gassi führen lässt. Zu den liebenswert ironischen Varianten gehören Rosemarie Trockels Bronze „Gewohnheitstier“, Antony Gormleys „Lost Dog“ aus nachgebildeten Kugellagern oder Marta Klonowskas Hündchen und Rokoko-Schühchen aus blauen Glassplittern, zwei Motive dem Gemälde „Portrait of Young Girl with Dog“ von Charles d’Agar entnommen.

Bilder die bellen, beißen nicht. Ob „Wau!“ oder  „Wow!“, fern vom Kitschverdacht ist die Ausstellung „Cocker Spaniel and Other Tools of International Understanding“ ein Vergnügen für Hundefreunde wie Hundefeinde. Die zeitgenössische Schau endet mit einer Finissage am 11. Oktober, bevor sie, erweitert um historische Gemälde, in die Kunsthalle Kiel wandert.
