Southampton, known as ‘the gateway to the world’, has seen many visits from the world’s greatest ocean liners, including the QE2 and the Titanic.

Every year the city hosts sailing events, such as the Southampton Boat Show, which attracts tourists from around the world.

The port rose from humble beginnings. The ancient seaport of Hamptun, from which the city gets its name, appears in some of the country’s earliest historical records. It was in Roman times that Southampton’s first port was first built on the River Itchen. Raids by the French on the 14th century led to the construction of forts, or walls, some of which still stand today. Bargate and Westgate are two of the best preserved Medieval Town Walls in the UK.

During the following centuries, Southampton’s status as a port grew. It was in 1415 that Henry V sailed to France and Agincourt, and in 1620 English Puritans set sail in search of the New World, on The Mayflower.

Competition from other ports saw trade decrease until the opening of the first dock in 1836.

The steam age developed, and so did the city of Southampton. Adding to this development was the arrival of the railway from London and its shipping industry.

In the 1930s, ships sailed from Southampton around the globe, making it the ‘Gateway to the World’. Unfortunately, Southampton’s sucess became its downfall when the city was flattened during World War Two.

Since then, the city has been rebuilt and redeveloped. The city remained Britain’s leading port in the 1950s and 60s. In 1962 over half a million passengers passed through the port, as well as 4% of imported cargo into Britain. The 1970s saw the port changed by some older docks becoming redundant. The number of passengers travelling through the ports of declined as air travel took off in the 60s. In the 1980s and 90s some of the old docks were converted into areas of shops and offices and marinas.

The 1938 handbook to Southampton Docks states:

“Within comparatively recent years, Southampton has become established as one of the foremost commercial seaports of Britain. The facilities and equipment are among the finest in the world, and the development of the dock system under Railway Company ownership has been marked by an era of progress unparalleled in the history of the port. This great increase in trade has conferred upon Southampton the title of Britain’s Premier Passenger Port and also the forth port in respect of the value of freight traffic dealt with.” Today, whilst visitors stop to admire the QE2 harboured in Southampton’s docks, it might surprise them to know that Southampton is also the home of the fighter plane “Supermarine Spitfire” or “Spitfire” for short, designed for use by the RAF in World War II.

It’s no surprise that Southampton’s port became known as the ‘Gateway to the World’.

Mas sabem que mais? Valeu meeeeeesmo a pena! Precisava de desanuviar a cabeça e sair um bocado da rotina… Durante a semana mal saio porque tenho coisas para fazer, chego cansada e odeio este tempo de Inverno, por isso, precisava realmente de sair o fim-de-semana inteiro. Por muito que agora tenha que me matar a fazer o trabalho não quero saber

E agora vou ver se tomo o pequeno almoço para depois começar a fazer alguma coisa da vida! xoxo

I went to Liverpool for work a few weeks ago. Despite some pretty picture opportunities, it didn’t leave me with a positive impression overall. The International Slavery Museum and the Liverpool docks in general really did stir the history student in me. However, the three people with whom I was walking around – born in Bolivia, Colombia and Afghanistan, respectively – were treated very badly; they were bashed into and stared at. Whereas in London I feel anonymous, in Liverpool I felt heavily scrutinised. The trip made it very clear that I have been spoilt in the London bubble, despite my occasional despair at its everyday aggressiveness (…on the rush hour train, in queues, etc).

Hey guys, well late, but this is the COD4 Docks I made quite a while ago. Working on the Modern Warfare 2 Docks.

Der November lockt die Krawatteneisbären aus der Reserve…kurz vor dem Winterschlaf sind so einige Konzertbesuche Pflicht. Dank der WHITE LIES werden Indiebegeisterte schon am 02.11 ins Übel & Gefährlich (verlegt in die Markthalle) strömen und wem das gefällt, für den hält das Docks am 12.11 einen besonderen Leckerbissen parat. Die französischen Indie-Rocker PHOENIX (Foto) besuchen die Hansestadt und wenn die live genauso einheizen wie ihr grandioses Album “Wolfgang Amedeus Phoenix”, können wir uns richtig warm einpacken….

Gleich zwei tage später sind die GOLDENEN ZITRONEN im Ü&G zu bewundern und allein am 17.11 spielen Größen wie der Smith-Sänger MORRISSEY, die EDITORS und die New Comer PASSION PIT – leider alle zur gleichen Zeit.

Wer dann immernoch nicht genug hat und es gern auch etwas härter mag schaut am 19.11 einfach in der Sporthalle vorbei….denn dort werden wir einen Mob von durchgeknallten Krawatteneisbären zur der Live-Performance von THE PRODIGY abgehen sehen. (mir)

So I went down to the sea again for the last time, and I said to the sea, Well.  And she, who had been so talkative all day, replied, Shh.  I might have listened but for all the bad blood.  The leaving things around.  The boats, the docks, the overturned roofs and uprooted trees.  And yet, when I got home, and my wife asked me, What?  I repeated, Shh.  And she said, Shh?  And together we made a sound like a storm, until our basement flooded.  We watched from the roof as our lives floated away.  Goodbye, she said, and I thought she meant, Good God.  Good grief, I said.  And the sea replayed that message again and again all night.  Finally, we slept.  The seagulls woke us in the morning with ape-like barks and high-pitched laughter.  I had to agree.  We looked very funny.  The two of us lying at the peak.  As naked and as cold as the day we first splashed down.  Two strange astronauts launched from a good orbit into a salty sea.

The Court releases an unpublished opinion affirming the City of Birchwood’s handling of docks on their public park with shoreline on White Bear Lake.  The primary issue is who holds the riparian rights to the shore – the City by ownership of the park parcels or landowners holding access easements dating to the original subdivision of land.  Like many real-estate focused decisions, this opinion isn’t a groundbreaker but is handy to keep around as a nutshell guide to the topic at hand.  On top of the riparian-right issue, the Court also re-affirms that local government regulation of docks will usually trump any claim of property right to install a dock. 

It’s not clear that the appellants meant for the case to be decided on riparian rights alone.  Just name-dropping section 1983, due process, and equal protection isn’t enough to raise an issue, though.  The Court brushes those issues aside, but not without suggesting that the outcome could be different if the issue were plead properly (the City does grant rights on the beach to a different dock association).  This looks like a shot at both the appellants’ attoney and the city, to me.

File it away – we’ve all had those times where pushing a government staff member into a wall, chasing the person into a secured area, prying your way into same secure area, shoving that person into an office and barring the door is just another part of the day.  Especially when you want to see some government documents, and see them now, but some punk deputy department director asks you to make an appointment.  Some things just have to be done.  Just know, when it’s all done, you’re not going to be able to claim the right to make a citizen’s arrest as a defense to the trespassing and disorderly conduct charges coming your way when the dust settles.

The best thing about being an editorial photographer  is that, everyday is different, in fact every hour is different. I spent this particular  morning up to my  knees in mud, wandering around deepest somerset, photographing cider makers gathering apples and fermenting  their brew in  darkened barns. In Contrast, the afternoon was spent snapping the Ambassador of Portugal at the new Crest development  Porto  Quay, in the vibrant Docks area of Bristol. This included access to the Ambassadors reception on the deck of the Super Yacht ‘Harmony’  (incidentally not a Ferrero Rocher in sight ! ) where the finest port and Portuguese cuisine was liberally handed round .

Two very different worlds but both were equally satisfying and rewarding. The Cider tasted as good as the port, both locations where  stunning and the welcome’s equally warm and welcoming at either.

Yes, there is no sign of winter in this photo but I know that lots of people are beginning to dock their boats in for the winter because it is getting closer to the day we of course all look forward to…..when winter truly begins.

I took this photo at Presque Isle.  It was a beautiful day and I was very happy to have the opportunity to shoot there that day.

Prescott Park never ceases to entice me.  I was lucky to catch a colorful sunset one evening that had a cooler color to it than the usual reds and oranges I’ve been shooting/posting – and the rushing water and the symmetry of the docks completed it for me.  Hope you like.
