now that docomo has released the national sms plan, I am more than excited.

I was using airtel previously, and once had a very bad experience with them. Just after one month after I ot this airtel sim, they simply cut my connection, I was having 500 rupees of worth of talk time in it and lost it. the reason was, I did not confirm my address. i never had got their call, and more over, they could have sent an sms to me for the confirmation, which they never did, before cutting my connection. For non sense ads, they send sms’s, then why not for my address confirmation. I went to their website to lodge a complaint, lo, there complaint can not be registered simply because the letter should not have even a spelling mistake., why man, are they so much allergic to spelling msitakes??

I typed the whole letter in word , checked for spelling mistake and submitted… still the very same.. .. just because, they DO NOT want to hear to any complaints.

i was like, “how dare they do that, after eating my money”, I just was waiting for a chance for revenge and there came the docomo.

moreover, in my home, the network of dcomo is 100 % better than airtel network.

Delhi, 22 November 2009: TATA DOCOMO, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices Limited, today announced the extension of its industry-changing ‘Pay-for-exactly-what-you-use’ pricing paradigm to roaming services as well, introducing per-second billing for all calls made or received while ‘roaming’ across the country, at its existing tariff of 1 paisa per second—for both pre-paid and post-paid subscribers. The move is set to redefine the very concept of making calls while ‘roaming’ in India, much as TATA DOCOMO’s per-second billing offer did for local and long-distance calls a few months earlier, when the company launched commercial operations.
From Monday, while roaming, subscribers can make calls across India at 1 paisa per second, across all 15 Circles where TATA DOCOMO has launched GSM services, regardless of which network or type of phone the call is made to. Furthermore, incoming calls while roaming will also be charged on a per-second basis, at 1 paisa per second. With TATA DOCOMO set to launch its GSM services pan-India this year, this game-changing roaming option will be available across the country.

I couldn’t stop myself from writing this post. I just couldn’t stop. I used to love advertisements.

I couldn’t stop myself from writing this post. I just couldn’t stop. I used to love advertisements. I would cut these adverts out from papers and magazines and store them. I used to stream the whole of “Superbowl” just to watch those adverts in the middle. I loved adverts and I felt things were going well. It was all ok, till I saw the “Hutch” and “Snapple” advertisements. After this came the super shockwave that triggered a “WTH” situation in my brain and now I abhor advertisements. That is when things went out of bounds.

These ads with "real people" narrating how good a product is must go. We know they are models. We just saw them a few minutes back in another advert.

Ok, forget about all those. I think we are following a trend here and my spider senses tell me where we would be in a few decades. To know this, we would have to see the evolutionary graph (surprisingly the graph is written using English language here).

Long ago when the concept of advertisements were invented:

The brief description of the product and its uses were provided to the end consumer as an advert. The consumer decided if it was the right product and chooses between the few choices he/she had. It was simple like the 1890 Coca-Cola advertisement that shows the product being described in detail; importantly it was accurate and correct. (I would like to say that last week I bought a nail clipper that refuses to clip my nail, I can use it as a bottle opener though).

After around 60 years, let us use a mental telescope and come to the 1970’s when TV was introduced as a mass product and advertisements started coming on TVs. (radio and mail still followed the same model as before)

Here is where the problem started. We all know what kind of a media our great television is. Time slots started appearing and then came the revolution, this was “push marketing”, where they literally went ahead and made the product look like something it wasn’t and tried to sell it. This was kind of ok from their point and to some extent ok for us too.

The “Hutch, Snapple and DoCoMo” advertisement era: (Snapple on the Internet)

After 30 years of boring pushing and pulling, advertisement agencies thought they wanted a different approach to convince folks to buy stuff, so they decided on “modern techniques”. These included getting a dog to go follow a cute looking kid to show how good their customer service was (hutch had/has a robot that loves you so much that it would keep speaking to you for hours when you call them). The zoozoo adverts were not even remotely funny and had little to do with their products.

As for Snapple, if Snapple was “Made from the best stuff on earth”, then earth really sucks, take me elsewhere.

Here is the nail in the coffin. The DoCoMo advertisements show where we have come now. Euro-Rail, Indians, singing a stupid song and I am supposed to choose them as a telephone carrier. Not me.

Twenty years down the line:

The advertisement agencies would decide that even this incoherent data is still giving out information to consumers, so they would build a new superior system to make advertisements abstract, these adverts would tempt you personally to go try that product. This would involve mind tricks and hypnosis.

Fifty years down the line:

You would have to hide yourself from any kind of advertisements, because once you see them, there is no way you can take the thought away from your mind and the only solution is to buy the product.

I think it is time we stop choosing between one puppet to the other. We need product advertisement in a manner in which it gives us good amount of credible information and not celebrities and “lalala” songs that have nothing to do with the product.

So now that the government has given an ultimatum to the mobile service providers in India, to get the infrastructure for number portability ready, I think that the mobile subscribers have finally been delivered to the promised land. And that too at a very affordable rate. Also, this marks the beginning of another price war with airtel leading the game by lowering call rates further. The order by the government sure did ring some cells…oops!!..bells.

An advise : Those wishing to port to a different service provider should start topping up less, since we don’t know if the balance will be carried forward.

I wanted to tell you about these amazing phones a few days ago and finally I have time to do it. These all come from NTT Docomo, the largest telecommunication network in Japan, which recently launched a few new series of cool cell phones for fashionable people, business users and people focused on mobile entertainment.

The phones you are probably already admiring in this article are the new models introduced in the docomo STYLE series, which includes: the F-02B handset that’s waterproof and comes with a tiny fragrance holder for when you need to apply more perfume on you, the L-01B with illumination and secondary touchscreen, the L-02B that brings beauty tips and special content for girls, the L-03B in a compact design with interface available in three languages including English, the N-01B with illumination and design inspired from French manicure, the N-03B with waterproof capability and water pattern, the P-02B with integrated camera that’s accessible via the touchscreen, the SH-02B with crystal-like pattern and elegant lights, the SH-04B designed by Q-pot to look like a melting chocolate (my favorite), and the SH-05B teen phone designed by people from the Seventeen magazine.

F-04B ini Fujitsu announced a new cell phone this week that is capable of splitting into two parts. The F-04B was announced as part of NTT DoCoMo’s new line-up. It is scheduled to hit Japanese shelves in March or April.

＠WORD
http://atword.jp/

seems every mobile operator in india is going the docomo way..the trend of 1ps per sec has caught up like the jaipur fire..its 69 in airtel, 65 in vodafone and aircel got the cheapest add on with 18 rupees for the next year fully..ask me what is this trying to show? well, think back a few months..we had call rates that wasn’t less than one rupee without rate cutters..even if it was less it would be 99 paise..big deal! and now all of a sudden, everyone is giving add ons as cheap as the addons for firefox ( its free actually ) get my point? so, all these days they have been making one hell of a profit with all of us..now, an opertor comes in and gave 1sec pulse and everyone follow suit..( i wonder, when somethin comes cheap, why is it always from japan, china or korea )..now everyone is turned to the 1sec pulse..the funny thing is they make profit even here..they don wanna give it out for free..so, they charge a small fee for somethin they could give for free..jus like that..but then, there is the old lady..good ‘ol ( or is ol’) BSNL..what are they doing out there?? well, they are busy trying to make money out off the spectrum allocation so that few ppl can ensure the monetary safety of their forthcoming generations..shouldn’t the government provide services in par with the private ones or atleast half of it?? ( i agree, broadband is really good but what bout the rest..) a friend of mine send me a msg askin me where was i then..it reached my mobile when i was with him the next day..talk bout service..guys even comment like at this rate soon the missed calls given in the morning ll reach the other end only in the afternoon..its not a joke..many are just waiting for the number transition plan to get rid of their troubling BSNL network..maybe none wanna use a BSNL number no more..it might soon be happening..its time the government stood up for the people and set things right..rather than making money off it..will they? lets wait and watch..till then, happy calling people..

Tomi T Ahonen, author of “Communities Dominate Brands” writes in this blog post: To put

Tomi T Ahonen, author of “Communities Dominate Brands” writes in this blog post:

To put it in context, there are 480 million newspapers printed daily; 800 million automobiles registered on the planet; 1.1 billion personal computers including all desktops, laptops, notebooks and netbooks; 1.2 billion fixed landine phones; 1.4 billion internet users; 1.5 billion TV sets; 1.7 billion unique holders of a credit card of any type; and 2.1 billion unique holders of a banking account of any kind. But 4 billion mobile phone subscriptions.

That is at one level astounding but then there is visual confirmation that this is true. Even in India, without checking the numbers, there must be more mobile phone users than TV households, newspaper readers, computer users, internet subscribers, etc.

Tomi says that the first 4 billion were the classic “early adopters”. But the next 4 billion will be different. To quote

So here is the big news. The next 4 Billion will not be like you and me. They will not be wealthy enough to own a PC and have a broadband connection and read blogs or do any Twittering on a PC. Over 95% of the next 4 billion will be in the Developing World, and while there will be of course an emerging middle class who may aspire to own a netbook, those tend to be wealthy enough to already have a subscription today. Those next four billion will be either those who do not have any connection today, at all, or else are second and third subscriptions to those who already have one today. Either way, the behavior of those new subscribers is distinctly different from what the mobile industry has grown accustomed to in the past decades.

Countries in Asia and Africa led by India and China will soon dominate the cellular waves. They will decide the services, the prices, the content, the usage – in short, they will define the market. This is a the new community of consumers, of citizens who have the means to give voice to their lives.

We saw mobile phones in use during all the recent elections in India.

If one looks at some of the advertisements of the mobile phone companies like Airtel and Tata DoCoMo on Indian television, already there is this clear highlighting of their mobile subscriber base. Airtel has SRK talking about “Akele kuch bhi nahin…” and then the plug about 110 million people. DoCoMo has this “Friendship Express” theme.

One needs to watch this carefully.

When I first talked about the MobCon in my post “What is the MobCon?” I described the future of Mobile Content convergence as a cataclysmic doomsday scenario for all the market leaders who attempted to surf the chaotic waves of the information revolution.

Japan was, and still is, the exception to this rule.

In 1999, at the height of the dotcom boom, Japan took a radically different approach to the challenge of the MobCon.

In the USA, Europe and Australia

Governments profited from selling the Wireless Spectrum to the highest bidder. (e.g. In 2000 and 2001, the 3G licences in the UK and Germany were given out for $58 billion and $78 billion, respectively.)

Technology providers focused on developing objects and messaging (ie Software: Web Sites, Web Applications, Browsers etc)

The stock markets and venture capitalists invested heavily in the promise of the dotcom

In Japan

The Japanese Government created a wireless commons.

Technology providers focused on developing gadgets (i.e. Purpose built mobile phones and wireless gadgets)

The carriers focused on providing both the world’s best wireless telecommunications infrastructure and a stable and secure payments network

Innovation in the USA and Europe stalled when the dotcom boom collapsed. Since then much of the investment by Silicon Valley has been in Web 2.0.

The problem is Web 2.0 was not the next wave in the Mob Con but a further iteration of the original Web 1.0

After the dotcom boom Japan invested in MobCon Gadgets. Silicon Valley in web 2.0 applications

As you can see from the diagram above everything the market considers to be innovative in the Web 2.0 Landscape today (e.g. Social Networks, Blogs, Wiki, Video) was either launched or in planning during the Year of the Information Superhighway (1995-96).

What this means is simply this: After 15 years and billions of dollars of investment by Silicon Valley the only thing the US has to offer the world is an improved version of the Information Superhighway (Mark II – Web 2.0).

Japan didn’t head down the Web 2.0 Windows/Broadband strategy. It went wireless.

Japan headed straight for the MobCon (Mobile Web) strategy. Chose Mobile Commerce over eCommerce and so by 2007, when Apple first launched the iPhone, Japanese consumers were already spending over US$1000 per year on Mobile Commerce. (Much more than what US consumers were spending online at that time)

Japanese mCommerce vs Rest of the World eCommerce in 2007

In Japan consumers happily pay per view for content on the personalise applications they have purchased for their fashionable mobile gadgets. Each of the transactions managed by the telecoms provider as part of their monthly billing and network access fees.

In return Japanese consumers are rewarded by having access to the most technically advanced and efficient wireless data network in the world. That’s why, for the past 3 years, more people in Japan access the web through cell phones than through PCs.

Today Silicon Valley is 10 years behind Japan in the race to the MobCon.

Thanks to their dalliance with the Information Superhighway (Mark II – Web 2.0) they still stand at the cross roads contemplating the next stage in MobCon convergence: The Mobile Web.

The question is: Will the Telcos create highly profitable “Walled Gardens” for banks, media and technology companies to prosper within or will they once again go in search of the lowest common denominator: Band Width?

Will they follow the profitable Japanese model or will 2010 become the year of the Information Superhighway (Mark III – Wireless)?

Serkan Toto asked the question last year on Techcrunch: Is Japan’s super-advanced mobile web: Too unique to serve as a global blueprint?

The real question is: Why has it taken Silicon Valley so long to wake up to the challenges and opportunities of the MobCon?

The viral which generated quite a fuzz has put brand “DoCoMo” right at front on consumer’s mind. In

The viral which generated quite a fuzz has put brand “DoCoMo” right at front on consumer’s mind. In fact, the brand awareness is so strong that you will find people speaking of DoCoMo without even knowing what exactly it is. DoCoMo is a GSM service from Tata’s stable and has applied innovative ideas both in media marketing and it’s service offerings. It currently operates in 8 circles across country and that may be the reason why people are still unaware of the real product. But still, the brand image of DoCoMo raises a lot of expectations in term of its innovative services.

The first offering which is unique is “pay-per-second” for call charges and “pay-per-text” for sms charges. Even though “pay-per-second” service can’t be termed as a new service (as it was launched way back in 2003 by BPL Mobile), the way it’s marketed by DoCoMo is very impressive. But there are other small and really effective services which are on offer-

Very cheap “pre pay” GPRS packs, which provide GPRS services for as low as Rs 15 for 20 MB download limit for 3 days and a Rs 95 pack for 100 MB download for 30 days. Very cheap as compared to my current idea plan (Rs 150 monthly for 30 MB download L).

A “Timed SMS” service which can send SMS to recipients at desired date and time.

Not charging users for first 30 seconds when they are listening from a list of “ring tones” before actually downloading any. Very good indeed, as initial IVR just takes keypad information to get us to the right track list and shouldn’t be charged, ethically.

They are launching various customer experience zones like “Dive In”, where user can compare Mobile handsets from various vendors and choose the right one as per the need. We already have stores like MobileNXT and the MobileStore in India and what experience “Dive in” will offer is something yet to be seen.

They have also launched a service “Geo Fencing” which can track people and aware concerned persons if the route of any vehicle carrying the person is diverted. This may be really effective for School children when they are travelling.

DoCoMo has really done well to create a good first impression and with all these services coming up, their offering looks promising. Digital advertisement has also been very impressive (2000 facebook fans and twitter followers). Do you think they can stand such media hype in the time to come?
