Struggled to find any shops stocking anything more than cheap flimsy High School Musical advent calendars? Well, languish without one no longer. For the next twenty four days, in cahoots with Ben Baker and his faberiffic Dead Air Society, Out On Blue Six will be opening the doors of a special virtual advent calendar, behind each of which you’ll find a good, bad or just plain inexplicable Christmas single with a humorous commentary attached. How did popular eighties arcade game characters celebrate the Festive Season? What is the sound of a troupe of Victorian wassailers on ‘drugz’? Where is Jaymi Bantok? All will be revealed over the coming weeks…

To start proceedings in fine style, here’s a terminally peculiar single trying and failing to cash in on one of the most easily cash-in-able phenomena of the entire Twentieth Century, as previously mused on here…

Mars, 2059. Bowie Base One. Last recorded message: ‘Don’t drink the water. Not one drop.

Mars, 2059. Bowie Base One. Last recorded message: ‘Don’t drink the water. Not one drop.’

So, the Tenth incarnation of The Doctor, armed with the knowledge of his impending doom, lands on the red planet for a very dark adventure.

The foreshadowing of this Doctor’s demise is laced and interwoven throughout this episode. You already get the sense of a man trying to outrun his destiny. We were promised different dimensions of The Doctor’s character coming out in TWoM and boy, they succeeded – to a varying degree.

You can’t quite help but wonder that given a clear run to the TARDIS, The Doctor wouldn’t have scarped earlier leaving everything to pass. This is a Doctor afraid. Afraid of being the literal ‘time meddler’. It seems that his decision to take matters into his own hands and become ‘The Time Lord Victorious’ will not only be his undoing, but also makes him little better than The Master.

Whatever doubts about the path the character takes in this episode, there is little doubt that David Tennant is giving a tour de force in his penultimate story. Its not the bellowing scenes that most effectively demonstrate his acting ability, but rather the quieter scenes – The Doctor walking away from the base for example, as the deaths pile up at a alarming rate and The Doctor’s crumbling in front of Ood Sigma as he suspects his time is up being outstanding scenes.

With regards to the rest of the story though, the plot hurtled along with a fair few convenient holes. As ever, it depends on with criteria you look at it from – the ‘get bums on seats’ or ‘episode in ongoing narrative’ – but nonetheless, some of the ‘not-we’ noticed the convenience in Adelaide trusting The Doctor so quick. You do get the sense of ninety minutes of plot cut into a sixty minute episode rather than being a well-developed forty-five episode bulked up to an hour.

And its a shame it wasn’t longer, as it was bloody good. With some of Doctor Who’s most terrifying moments. The scene with the water steadily advancing on a hysterical Steffi was one that i would imagine might stay with some kids (and bigger kids) for a while yet. Till Christmas anyway..

I haven’t updated in over a month. I am scared to start writing again (because I’m lazy. not because I have anything scary to write). Lots of wonderful things have happened!

Greece! I went on a school trip to Greece and saw pretty much everything…unfortunately it is a little fuzzy in my head (school trips never feel real when you get back). It was an odd week getting stuck on top of the Acropolis during a mad thunderstorm, racing at Olympia, running around museums at night taking guerilla photographs (you aren’t allowed to pose with the statues so to get a cool photo you have to get creative), going to the Oracle at Delphi (so awesome up in the mountains), adventuring beneath the city of Mycenae, singing “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” at Epidaurus and nearly killing Zoe (we shared a room. that is reason enough). I know that there is a lot to question in this paragraph but if you are reading this you were either on the trip or I have babbled at you about it. Or if you don’t fit into those categories you can just string it all together how you want (you should add in some lasers. The trip needed some more lasers)

Tookey and I saw Jonathan Coulton. I’m not sure how I can edit that sentence to show you my excitement. I SAW JONATHAN COULTON! You know how it is- he is my favourite singer and I love him to pieces and it was the most awesome evening ever. (…it has been like three weeks and I am still hyper). I was also properly introduced to the music of Paul and Storm who were wonderfully funny and as soon as they finished their set me and Tookey looked at each other and started arguing about who was going to get up and buy their CDs (I went in the end). Aaarh and Jonathan was amazing and funny and he played some songs I didn’t know all that well (as well as cover versions of Birdhouse in your Soul by TMBG and Up the Junction by Squeeze- which made me excited) (oh! you can see the set list for the gig here! how cool is that?) and I didn’t mind that he rickrolled us during Mr Fancy Pants. Afterwards he stayed behind and so I got to meet him and I totally didn’t act like a creepy fangirl or anything (go me!):

This photo makes me so ridiculously happy

And I also met Paul and Storm (they were really excited about Tookey’s name. They were even more excited when she said they could call her “Tookles”):

Hell yeah Paul is wearing a Captain Hammer shirt!

And speaking of Captain Hammer: whilst waiting in line for these photos I was singing songs from Doctor Horrible’s Sing Along Blog with the guys behind me (one of them was being Moist in their university’s production! I hope it went well!). Tookey gave me a look for singing with strangers. But everyone there was just so nice! The atmosphere was fantastic! Hanging around with fellow nerds who wave macbooks instead of lighters (I also saw a companion cube when Jonathan sang “Still Alive”) and joining in whole-heartedly whether we were pretending to be pirates or zombies (I recently listened to the latter in french. I am just waiting for someone to write a musical of the french revolution with zombies so this song can get the recognition it deserves) (…it would work! We just need to get Kate Beaton onto this!)

ANYWAY. I’m sorry. That was a lot of rambling about JoCo. I also…went to my schools christmas fair…yay…(ooh actually that is a yay! they sold glittery rice krispy square things!) and got swine flu! I also became vaguely addicted to twitter (not updating it- just seeing what everyone else is doing) and MLIA.Hopefully interesting things will happen in the future: I might be going to see New Moon with Imogen (it depends if we can find some wizard robes and hufflepuff scarves in time. We aren’t going there to swoon over werewolf abs!) and I need to catch up on all the gossip and fling myself into trying to become philosopher of the week (never going to happen but I have my Aristotle bookmark to keep me company). Oh- I also read ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ which I thought was pretty awesome (I kinda love Harding despite everything. It is because Kesey always goes on about how lovely his hands are!) but now I am reading ‘The Graveyard Book’ so I can understand why the internet seems to have a massive crush on him (looking through his website I can kinda understand- he seems adorable) (though he would be more adorable if he had a giant squirrel tail).

OH: I just remembered! Doctor Who! It has been so long since I have needed to say anything about it. I went over to Hannah’s house to watch it and meet all her shiny new friends (who were lovely and insane and one of the girls was wearing Hammer Pants) which was fun. It was a really depressing episode (with random bits which weren’t meant to be funny. Like slow-motion ceiling watching and the whole “LOOK AN OOOOOOOOD!” moment) and I cannot wait until the Christmas special. The Master is coming back! (…though why is he blonde? Do all evil villains go through a blonde phase?)

“Writing isn’t just a job that stops at six-thirty…It’s a mad, sexy, sad, scary, obsessive, ruthless, joyful, and utterly, utterly personal thing. There’s not the writer and then me; there’s just me. All of my life connects to the writing. All of it.” — Russell T. Davies

So, at around 10:30 pm last night, I crossed the metaphoric finish line of NaNoWriMo. I hit 50,000 words. But did I stop writing? No. And I don’t plan to. Ever.

I learned a lot about myself while participating in NaNoWriMo this year. I’m tougher than I thought I was. It never occurred to me for a moment that I would actually win NaNo. I can’t tell you all the number of times that I wanted to give up. And almost did.

There were times where I wanted to tear the hair out of my head, cut myself, bang my head against the table, or kill myself. It was incredibly hard to keep going, even with all the encouragement. I did what a lot of writers during NaNo make the mistake of doing; I read over my work.

It was (and still is) rubbish. I felt horrible, I thought who in the world would want to read this?! It doesn’t even make any sense. But after calming myself down, going on the NaNo forums, I realized that everyone felt the same way. Firsts drafts are never meant to be good, it’s all about getting the idea written on the page during NaNo. Nothing more. Your idea doesn’t have to be perfect, your plot doesn’t have to make sense, your characters don’t even have to be fully developed yet. It’s all about the idea.

Right. So the ideas are written down, the dialogue written, the characters developed (somewhat)…now what do I do?

1) I’m going to go through each story and rip it to shreds. Metaphorically speaking of course. I’m going to strip away the rubbish, add to, cut and expand on scenes. And basically edit the hell out of it until it’s begging for mercy! But I shall be ruthless and cruel!

2) Give it to people to read. This is going to be tough for me because I always fret about what people think. Yes, I know I shouldn’t but it’s genetic. It’s built in. I suppose if I want to be a writer, then I should get use to negative comments. Guess I’ve got to develop a thick skin.

3) And probably, more editing after that…

4) Then maybe, possibly consider getting it published? There are lots of Doctor Who tie-in books, so this could be a possibility. As my mum says: “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

While I’m editing my first novel (how wild is that?!) There are also some other writing projects that I have to take care of:

1) I promised a couple of my friends that I’d finish writing my Harry Potter Prequel and I keep putting it off. Sorry. I’ll start the next few chapters in a few days! I know i’ve kept you waiting for over a year, I’m a horrible friend, what can I say? :p

2) Doctor Who radio play/screenplay. This will be something new for me. I’ve never written a screenplay before and the format baffles me slightly, but I’m learning! The reason I want to attempt this is because of this guy:

http://www.youtube.com/user/timelordfromhell

A couple of months ago he posted this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ph0WgBcDi6g

Asking for scripts for a 20-25 minute Doctor Who audio drama. Up until now, I’ve been sitting on this opportunity, because I just didn’t know what to do with it. But now I have loads of ideas. There is still the problem of learning how to write a script properly!

3) Script frenzy; brought to you by the people who run NaNoWriMo. It’s the same concept: starts April the 1st, ends April the 30th. Thirty days to write a 100 page screenplay. Why am I telling you this? Well, I just had so much fun during NaNo that I thought I’d attempt this to! Why not? Check out the website: http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/

4) SFX magazine is always looking for freelancers, and I thought that I’d apply and see what happens. They said and I quote: ”Formal qualifications are not essential, as we’re really looking for talent, enthusiasm, expertise and an ability to write. Examples of published material or (at the very least) copy written in the magazine’s style or format are essential as part of your application. “

Chances are nothing will come of it, since I’m a newbie to this writing shin-dig. But if I don’t at least try, I’ll be kicking myself later!

Alright ladies and germs I’m off to finish the last short story in the series! Woo!

After years of living as a human with Emma, The Doctor is trying to get back to his old self. Whilst Emma is confused and upset at the loss of Jason (The Doctor’s former guise), now he is no longer the man she knew and loved. Chameleon Arch stories have certainly become more en vogue after Human Nature aired, and I’ll be honest that I didn’t particularly care for Darker Projects’ previous story which followed Jasons change into The Doctor. However, the end result has been good. The series now has one of the most interesting Doctor companion dynamics, and it’s hard to tell how it will develop.

Also, the story itself has a lovely eerie quality, making good use of the imagery of Londons landmarks in distress – the Tate Modern, the tube. Along with the use of these mysterious horses. I’ve said previously that both the leads play their parts well, nothing’s changed there. It’s a solid production all round.

The Mentalist consegue fazer isso. Quem assitiu o destino do time do Bosco, sabe do que eu estou falando. Excelente.

Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, Being Human, Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Office, Skins, Primeval, Jeckyll, Mifits e Paradox São todos exemplos de séries recentes inglesas com uma qualidade média de roteiros muito maior do que as séries americanas.

By Michael MacLeod

BLUBBING Scots telly babe Lorraine Kelly was in floods of tears yesterday as celebrities from across the globe wished her a happy 50th birthday.

Stars including film hunk Gerry Butler, The Bee Gees, Peter Andre and Ricky Gervais sent surprise messages while she presented yesterday morning’s GMTV.

Looking wholesome as ever in revealing tartan dress, the big-hearted Dundee mum couldn’t hold back the tears as youngsters from the Black Watch Army Cadets also passed on their best wishes.

In a morning packed full of surprises, Lorraine was relieved from her usual presenting duties by another TV queen, Paul O’Grady, with the set adorned with balloons.

The camp star leapt onto the GMTV set and whipped off his bowtie, treating Lorraine to an impromptu birthday strip-show.

He told her: “You’ve been on telly almost half your life Lorraine, so there’s no way we could let your fiftieth go by without embarrassing you.”

A host of famous faces

Fellow Scot turned Hollywood hero Gerard Butler said: “Lorraine is 50? I can’t believe it.

“If it’s true, happy birthday.”

Hit boyband JLS joined them on the GMTV sofa to get Lorraine’s pulse racing.

Other well-wishers on the show included Doctor Who star David Tennant, singers Will Young and Leona Lewis and rockers Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.

Even the footballers from Lorraine’s beloved Dundee United sent a special message from their changing room.

Producers then showed a an impressive montage of celebs Lorraine has interviewed, including Elton John, Kylie Minogue, George Clooney, Joan Collins and Hugh Grant.

She was in Dundee at the weekend where husband Steve – also 50 – put on a big birthday bash along with Lorraine’s friends and relatives.

While she commutes to London every Sunday night to present the morning show, Lorraine said home is firmly where her heart is.

“A brilliant start to being 50″

She jets home to Dundee to be with Steve and their daughter Rosie every weekend.

Lorraine credited her own mum, Anne, for her youthful looks.

She said: “It’s all thanks to my mum that I have my legs and my cheekbones.”

But O’Grady said her “best assets” were neither her legs nor her cheekbones.

He said: “You’re most famous for your amazing bosom Lorraine, it goes before you.

“But it’s great you’ve done so much to raise awareness of breast cancer.”

Closing the show with a personalised cake featuring her famous bust and pink champagne, she said: “I’ve been welling up all morning.

“I had a fantastic night on Saturday and I’ve been totally spoiled today.

“It’s been a brilliant start to being 50.”

Cinéma : This Is It.

I spent a good part of yesterday looking around online for (preferably free) cross stitch patterns to use for geeky Christmas projects, and didn’t come up with all that many, and certainly didn’t find any books along those lines. Craft companies out there, a niche market awaits you! Up and coming crafters in their 20’s and younger are not interested in making samplers with little old lady flowers and cute cottages on them, we really want to stitch up some zombies and Tardises (or whatever the plural of Tardis might be).

Since that effort was a bust I will instead share my fabric finds of the last few days:

Elephants and Camels

And some from my trip to Japan over the summer (that I have not shared heretofore):

Each year the folks at 2 Entertain plan out the most confusing line-up of Doctor Who DVD releases. T

Each year the folks at 2 Entertain plan out the most confusing line-up of Doctor Who DVD releases. The choices are so apparently random that at one time fans wondered if a dart was thrown at a board bearing all of the possibilities and the crew just went with wherever the dart landed.

The exception to this rule could be the first year of releases that saw Spearhead from Space from the Pertwee era, Robots of Death starring Tom Baker, Caves of Androzani with Peter Davison and the 20th Anniversary Special the Five Doctors. After that point we have seen Timelash and Timeflight released within months of each other… I barely survived that one-two punch.

2010 looks to be an odd sampling with lots of box sets demanding an unusually high commitment to buy the costly DVDs from fans. There are some real corkers in there (I’m a fan of the Space Museum and cannot wait to see the extras on the Chase DVD), and some painful duds such as the three-in-one Myths & Legends. I’m also confused as to why 2 Entertain went with Time and the Rani for McCoy when there are other options such as Greatest Show in the Galaxy available. I mean we just got Delta and the Bannermen! Go easy on us!!

In any case, here is the provisional list of upcoming release. For up to date information on the Doctor Who DVDs as well as a stunning view behind the scenes in their making, I highly recommend the Doctor Who Restoration Team website.

No, not Sanctuary by David McIntee. Nor do I mean that one by Kate Orman set in Japan. Not even the Devil Goblins of Mars or the risible snoreathon Vampire Science. Worse even than the one where they have Dodo die of a sexually transmitted disease (yes, that actually was written and published). I’m talking about Lungbarrow. A book stuffed to the gills with the most appalling Fanwank that it leaves a nasty taste in the mouth while you’re reading it. This, however, is not a popular opinion.

I am, as usual, in a minority. People like the multiple K9s, Romana and Leela existing in the same period of time, despite their adventures being separated by more than a human lifespan. The Doctor as a Boy, bunking off school (where, incidentally, he is taught by an android in the shape of a giant moose), Looms (LOOMS! They rewrite Gallifreyans themselves as not born in a mammalian way! The arrogance of that!), witches on Gallifrey and a big RESET button at the end.

But every time I say what a bloody awful book it is (there’s one now on eBay.com selling for $83.99!!) people still insist on defending it. You can’t reason with some people. I fear I may have to re-read it to write a definitive blog on how utterly atrocious it is. Was it this book where the 7th Doctor assassinates the 6th? I can’t remember, but if I’m going to slag off this maddening unpleasance of a book I may have to soil my mind once more.

Oh, and Leela has a baby.
