“Document Freedom Day” is an event, promoted by the Free Software Foundation, whose aim

“Document Freedom Day” is an event, promoted by the Free Software Foundation, whose aim is to spread free documents formats and the Free Software culture. Last Wednesday I attended the Italian DFD 2009 in Opera (near to Milan, where in 2008 was organized “Liberamente“).

Me and Gianluca Varisco proposed a talk about the core values of the Fedora project, whose aim is to spread the meaning of the 4 foundations in general, and Fedora’s policies around codecs and firmwares in particular – thus covering a wider subject matter, not only documents.

Fedora gadgets

However, I couldn’t stay there all the time because it was a workday. I came during my lunch break and brought an OLPC (the byte-code one), some Fedora stickers and gadgets with me. Stefano Frontori, my colleague at byte-code, accompanied me and he was the official photographer (you will find some photos attached to this post). He’s a very good photographer but he has only one defect: he’s a Canonist (yep, this is a neologism “A person who uses a Canon” )

Fedora attenders

The initial plan was to do a two-people speech, but unfortunately Gianluca was unable to attend, due to last-minute-problems. I want to thank him: he took care all boring pre-event tasks: put together an abstract, contact the event owners and so on. There weren’t many people, but some interested students (better than 100 bored and inattentive people). I had only 30 minutes for my speech so I tried to do it in a more interactive way, people could interrupt me, ask questions and so on. At the end there was an important question about Fedora hardware support, about the community, and Fedora/Ubuntu comparison.

Me and my talk

I want also to point out the spirit of the FSF, in this case FSF Italy. Where the hell were they? FSF choose the most ugly day to organize this event (it was a workday, how can you expect a wide audience?), and didn’t send any FSF person.

Fedora ambassadors

Last but not least, many thanks to every voluntary people who organized this event. Special thanks to Alexjian Carraturo who allowed Fedora presence to this event.

As indicated earlier we did our thing on March 26th because we cooperated with the K34 art gallery in Kiel. We opened at 5.30 pm and prepared cookies and coffee. It was a very rainy day and that seemed not to have encouraged people to come. There were some random guests who were interested in the topic. I was told that the quick info folder that I had printed out contained some errors. Thats whats happening if you try to do things in a few minutes before an event starts. I had been sick for some days and did not work on that before. Additionally to the document freedom infos I also had some flyers about data retention (“Vorratsdatenspeicherung”). At 8pm I started my talk in the rear building:

About 8 people listened. In the talk I was trying to combine these the three topics: 1) Free Software, 2) Open Standards and 3) Free Content.

On Free Software I talked about Bill Gates Open Letter to Hobbyists (1976) and the reaction of Richard Stallman (1985) and the BSD (1989). All three topics have in common that they were created as a reaction to what the industry tried to establish as a new standard. In the Free Software part I showed the video of Stephen Fry to the 25th anniversary of GNU. I had edited the german subtitles with Aegisub (which works mostly great) and saved them as .ASS file but strangely in the middle of the video some sentences disappeared. I had tried to fix this before, but was unable to find any error.

Next on where open standards where I focused more on MP3 licensing and patent freedom to get my points accross. I think ODF is a very complex issue and maybe thats the reason why I did not find one movie that was getting the topic accross in a nice way. Most talks about ODF are highly technical or theoretically. I wish we would have something like some short 2-3 minute scenes where it is shown why MS Office is bad and OO.org and ODF is good. Also many material about the topic focuses on OO.org too much. So I did feel more comfortable with the patent issues. I was not trying to sell ODF as a better format itself – my goal was to show why open standards are always better.

The next point was about “Free Content” – I explained how the copyright protection was extended since the 18th century, the Sonny Bono Act and how and why Lawrence Lessig started the Creative Commons. I showed as success the 140 Million free works, Wikipedia, the free Nine Inch Nails album Ghost I-IV, the development of a culture of sharing and also the Open Access movement.

At the end I showed this episode of the Elektrischer Reporter for more insight on free content.

Was this event successful? Given how few people found the way to the talk I would say definitely not. But ont the other hand the topic was on the Agenda in Kiel today. I had to organize this whole thing alone and only had some helping hands on this day. I would do it again. We only had less than half of the visitors of 2008 SFD. But as you look at SFD vs. DFD the DFD is a lot smaller in all respects. And Kiel is also not a large town (about 1/8 of the size of Hamburg). I could have focused on my talk more. We have waited quite some time for no real visitors – and then had them all on the talk.

I like to work on the material I have started so quickly a bit more, to make it better for future events. It is very important to talk about those topics. It does not matter terribly much if you get the whole points perfect. If people talk they start to think. And as well if they listen to you. The most things will happen inside them. If what you say is true, the arguments will travel with their own energy. I am confident that the DFD will gain mcuh more importance. But I think it is also important to extend its meaning. We need much more good material. I do not like the FAQs etc. and also I dont just want to promote OO.org. People should understand why those things are important. If they just use OO.org they might not even think any different.

Thats it for this year.

OpenOffice.org (Windows, GNU/Linux y MacOS)

AbiWord (Windows, GNU/Linux y MacOS)

KOffice (GNU/Linux)

NeoOffice (MacOS X)

S.a. http://documentfreedom.org

“Persino” in ambito informatico!

Document freedom — what’s that? It’s all about being able to read something you wr

Document freedom — what’s that? It’s all about being able to read something you wrote a few years ago, and being able to read something that someone else has written — whether now or hundreds of years ago. Or even just knowing that you’ll be able to read what someone writes tomorrow. It’s all about freedom from the bounds that may be imposed by a proprietary document format.

On Wednesday this week, a group of us got together at the Google offices in Sydney to swap stories and ideas and to kick off the Sydney team for the Document Freedom Day initiative. The immediate aim is to raise awareness of the problems and to promote the idea of open standards for document formats.

We carefully, almost, didn’t mention Microsoft’s Open Office XML (OOXML) document format and its bid to get it declared an ISO standard.

The problem

If your writing is encased in a proprietary format, then to a certain extent you are at the mercy of the owners of that format. If they abandon backwards compatibility, the world will move on without really taking note of that event. A few years later, no-one will be able to read your work. Even worse, you may be unable to find some essential information that you know is out there, but is hidden from you because you’re using a different technology.

The meeting

The Sydney meeting was one of 200 similar events happening in 60 countries on the same day.

We started with a short introduction from each of the three sponsors:

Alan Noble, chief of engineering at Google Australia, was a debonair and skilled MC. His introduction was accompanied by a fair bit of wry humour, mentioning ‘notorious formatting incompatibilities, without naming specific software suites or operating systems’. He raised the simple question: Who owns the data? And he issued

a challenge to software engineers to come up with a format that will be readable for the next 1000 years.

Holly Raiche from Internet Society of Australia pointed out that part of the need is to educate and assist people who are concerned about interoperability. Many people are worried, but feel that they don’t know enough and are worried about seeming foolish.

Sridhar Dhanapalan from the Sydney Linux Users Group said that open formats tie in with open source. He looked at the Magna Carta and the Domesday Book — low tech, but we can still read them centuries later — and compared them to the BBC Domesday Project, putting the book onto laser disks which were unreadable 16 years later.

The two main speakers of the evening were Kate Lundy and David Vaile. Both so different, and both so interesting.

Kate Lundy — Wow, what a dynamo! She is Senator for the Australian Capital Territory, and has a strong interest in information technology, the National Archives, open technology and the laws governing freedom of information. Her talk was short and pithy. One of the main points I got out of it is this (my synopsis, not a direct quote):

With the recent change in the Australian Federal Government comes a unique opportunity for creative change. We should seize this opportunity to promote a drive towards open standards — particularly within the government services themselves. The National Archives, for example, have a range of rules governing standards for document formats, such as metadata.

Kate drew a parallel between the government’s ‘New Federalism’ (breaking down boundaries and sharing responsibilities) and the drive for open standards. I’m not so sure I get the comparison, but it was great to hear her enthusiasm, commitment and ideas.

David Vaile — The enthusiastic self-professed devil’s advocate. He was determined not to mention the war, and mostly succeeded. David is executive director of the Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre at the University of New South Wales. His talk covered a wide range of information. He divided the topic into three areas:

Open content (public domain; creative commons and free for education licences; Google’s friendly acquisition and acquiescence; crown copyright etc; and hybrids of the above)

Open source and free/libre software

Open standards and formats

There are some disquieting ins and outs to all this. Here are just some of the things David raised, in his role as devil’s advocate. Should we consider standards as ‘legislation lite’? Look at the wars going on within big companies. Even the Microsoft-versus-the-world standards wars are not black and white. Yes, we did mention the war after all Look at the process of defining the standards — does it work? Does the buzzword ‘open’ mask other interests? What does ‘free’ actually mean — does it include the rider ‘but within the boundaries laid down by me’? Are we in danger of moving towards extremism?

David urged us always to take a step back (actually, it was more like being gently shoved back) and be sceptical. He challenged us to think in terms of 500 years — especially for archives and such.

After the speeches, we held a short question time. I thought these two were the most interesting:

How can we participate in the Document Freedom initiative, moving on from this meeting? Kate Lundy answered that the online facilities were being set up.

How does cloud computing affect the openness of documents? There was quite a discussion around this point. Does the cloud get around the problem of obsolescence? Who owns the data? Bandwidth is costly, especially in some areas of the world. Governments, including the Australian government, have a risk aversion to technology — but this may not be a bad thing. We should look at a dual model, i.e. cloud plus local presences. The concepts of ‘control of data’ and ‘location of data’ should be separated because they actually have nothing to do with each other. (You may think you control your data if it’s on your own hard disk. But what happens when your disk crashes, or becomes obsolete?)

My conclusions

This was really interesting. I’m staying tuned.

One thing I’d like to get deeper into, is the open formats themselves. At the meeting, we concentrated a fair bit on the content of documents (ownership and security) rather than the actual format. We did mention ODF and HTML. What about XML formats like DITA and DocBook? Are they mature enough for mainstream use? If not, what can we do to promote them? And why do WYSIWYG editing tools always seem to lag behind? Why is transformation between formats so difficult (e.g. XSLT) — is this stuff just for geeks

Update on 1 April: Check out this excellent comparison of DocBook and DITA by Teresa Mulvihill.

After the formal meeting, most people went on to dinner and informal networking. I had been awake since 01:30 that morning (yes, that’s just after midnight — and don’t ask why, because it’s nothing exciting) so I left. I guess I probably missed out on some really cool stuff. If anyone who was there reads this blog, please let me know what happened.

Today marks the first observation of Document Freedom Day, from here on out an annual celebration held on the last Wednesday of March.

From the official website:

Document Freedom Day (DFD) is a global day for document liberation. It will be a day of grassroots effort to educate the public about the importance of Free Document Formats and Open Standards in general.

Complementary to Software Freedom Day, we aim to have local teams all over the world organise events on the last Wednesday of March. 2008 is the first year that Document Freedom Day is being called for, and we are looking for people around the world who are willing to join the effort.

DFD’s main goals are:

promotion and adoption of free document formats

forming a global network

coordination of activities that happen on 26th of March, Document Freedom Day

Once a year, we will celebrate Document Freedom Day as a global community. Between those days, DFD will be focused on facilitating community action and building awareness for issues of Document Freedom and Open Standards.

Given the work on open data standards, structured data, and open repositories being done by Cameron, Peter MR, and others in the open science community, this is definitely cause for celebration! Unfortunately, the United States seems to be lagging behind other countries in its observance of this holiday (but maybe we’ll give it another year).

Thanks to Alain Laederach for the tip!

It came to me as a surprised as I was checking my RSS feeds today and found in on Ubuntu Tutorials – What Are You Doing For Document Freedom Day?. Go spread the word. For freedom!!!
