The WIld and Wonderful Whites has easily moved on to my top 10 documentaries of all time list. The story of this family by itself is amazing. If you have ever grown up in or near the Appalachian Region you know the type of people the White Family represent. You have seen them and recognize the circle of self-destruction that they are trapped in. Poor families, drug addiction, lack of education, and a lack of knowledge of the world around them, is a very familiar story in the Appalachian Region. But the White family has taken all of that to another level.

From Mamie snorting lines in front of her mother, to Kirk snorting doing the same in the hospital after giving birth to her daughter, the Whites show they live by their motto that they “just don’t give a shit”. Everyone of them has been to jail for something and that includes every generation. Sue Bob’s son Brandon Poe was sentenced to 50 years in jail during the year of taping. 50 years! Because, and I quote, “I shot the dude in the face.”

The Whites solve most of their problems with violence and mischief. If you cross them be prepared for a fight, but if your one of them, they will stand beside you until the very end. It appears that they will stand by you to the very end just so they can fight. With the caffeine, nicotine and all the drugs in their bodies, they have to burn off that “extra” energy some how!

You have to see this just out of pure curiosity alone. I can’t believe as a society we have created this family. Jobs, they take zero responsibility for anything, and they live for the next high. It’s a train wreck that you can’t help but watch. It’s a part of America that no one talks about and we pretend it doesn’t exist. This doc is so honest it’s painful.

      In 1965, the Canadian town of Winnipeg, Janet Reimer gave birth to twin boys – Bruce and Brian. Six months later a bungled circumcision left Bruce without a penis. Based on a radical new theory of gender development the decision was taken to raise Bruce as a girl.  So here is my first choice. The Girls with Too Much Skin. Which is a story about sisters Lucy, Hannah Betts, and Lara Bowen, who have a  rare genetic disorder known as Harlequin Ichthyosis, which makes their skin grow at an abnormal rate. This documentary report fallows these girls in their daily lives.

There’s no question that our current educational system is failing our students.

The statistics are staggering: among 30 developed countries, the U.S. is ranked 25th in math and 21st in science.  While critics tend to rely on the three-decades long decline of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) to document the dumbing down of American education, more alarming is our performance against the students of other industrialized countries. By virtually every measure of achievement, American students lag far behind their counterparts in both Asia and Europe, especially in math and science. Moreover, the evidence suggests that they are falling farther and farther behind. As educational researcher Harold Stevenson notes, although “the U.S. is among the countries expending the highest proportion of their gross national product on education, our elementary school and secondary school students never place above the median in comparative studies of academic achievement.”

In a country born out of political dissent, we watch our leaders in Washington slowly pass bills that label ordinary Americans as thought criminals and potential domestic terrorists for simply questioning the actions of their government.  We see third party candidates and their impassioned supporters listed in secret government reports that call their allegiance into question and brand them as fanatics and extremists.
