With a yr already gone since the US government started its bailout business, most of America seems unchanged. November 12, 2008, marked the day Hank Paulson, Treasury Secretary, announced that TARP funding would go to banks as capital injections rather than to the purchase of toxic assets. Matthew Philips, NEWSWEEK writer, evaluates that decision here.

The Eurozone has escaped its recession. In the United States, however, Wall Street executives who were pressured to take preferred stocks will still see substantial bonuses at the end of the yr. Unemployment romps onward, having recently hit 10.2%. Families continue to face foreclosures and other consequences of the mortgage crisis.The recession is still on.

Like a yr ago, the people most affected by the economy are not the ones who caused it to tank. Those executives and managers have mysteriously maintained their jobs-- and homes and bonuses. But why? Why, when the government throws down billions of dollars to rescue its economy, won't it put the arrogant Masters of the Universe in their place? "They didn't extract sensible terms," says Simon Johnson, former chief economist at the IMF. Johnson points out that Paulson didn't ask of its own banks what the U.S. regularly asks of developing countries when cleaning up their banking systems. "One of the first things that's done is to fire the managers that oversaw the problems," says Johnson. "Yet shockingly, this hasn't happened in the U.S. These guys are still there for the most part." It boggles the mind. What do these fools have to be afraid of? They dwell in shiny offices far above the realm of normal people, manipulating conceptual, intangible numbers with their greedy digits. They have silently regarded themselves as Masters of the Universe at least long enough for Tom Wolfe to write about them in the 80s. For real change to occur, for an overhaul to take place, those overseers of the broken system must be switched out. They fucked up, and they didn't mind much until they got caught. Even then, well, they still have their bonuses.

I Heart Sharks then stepped through the crowd and got their instruments ready, while the singer nervously slipped in and out of German and English. Since they were previously unknown to me, I’ll just throw some random observations out there. The drummer was the most enthusiastic percussionist I’ve had witness to see. He seemed to be having more fun than the entire crowd combined, he was constantly getting up and his face was always changing from one expression to the next. The sound in this venue seemed perfect (so I guess props to the sound technicians), not too loud, not too quiet, with everything the band playing easily slipping into the ear, quite hard for a band with a harsh electronic sound (think Does it Offend You, Yeah? or Friendly Fires). My statement of hipsters not dancing, was once again proved, but fortunately this time it did not make the gig any less fun. I can’t say their studio sound, which was given to me fresh ripped the night of the gig, is too special, but if you get the chance, catch them live, because they have enough songs to really get a party started. Every time I had to cross the tracks to go to the toilet I made the joke that I had to “piss like a race horse”. That joke is going to be recycled for Future 2010. “What does the Future Music 2010 sound like” I hear you ask? Well it sounds like the past (yep another recycled joke, I know but everyone is so worried about the environment these days). The Prodigy are headlining, and sure they will put on an entertaining spectacle of a show but does anyone actually listen to the Prodigy anymore? Is there anyone out there can honestly say they turned on their iPod and actively chose to listen to a Prodigy album in the past 5 years? Shuffle mode doesn’t count. Fresh from, um, playing Parklife, Luke Steele brings his Empire of the Sun show. Interesting choice that one, you would assume everyone who wanted to watch EOTS would have watched the show at Parklife. I really can’t imagine too many people going back for more or Luke Steele gaining too many new fans in 5 months. Franz Ferdinand standout as the first rock headliner for Future Music however previously acts like Datarock, Who Made Who and CSS have brought their guitars to the festival so it shouldn’t be too shocking. Boys Noize will be touring his new album Power and is Heads Will Roll’s most anticipated act on the line-up. Stay tuned to Heads Will Roll as more acts and hopefully some after parties are announced. Bueno pues al final, de Apparat, entre tanto arriba y abajo, solo vimos parte de la sesión, pero muy bien lo que escuchamos. Entre tanto trajín también pude comprobar que Quim Gutierrez es más bajo que yo, y yo no soy una percha, o sea que cada uno saque sus conclusiones… Antes de ir al Razz, nos miramos un poco el cartel, y vimos que en la sala 1 aka Razz Club, estaban estos chicos británicos a los que varios medios comparaban con Daft Punk, Justice o Digitalism, pero para nada. Aunque lo que oímos en su myspace no sonaba nada mal, en concierto nos parecieron bastante gritones y decidimos que no nos haríamos nada fans. Ese “We Are Rockstars”, fue el primer single de su álbum que tiene el nombre superlargo, y que salió el pasado año, y de donde vienen las comparaciones con los anteriores grupos. Det skal avholdes konsert der i dag, så håper at flest mulig dukker opp. Etter en lang og slitsom dag på skolen (lang og lang..) skulle vi ha tysk. I tysken var det en massiv gloseprøvekrangel. Gloseprøve eller ikke gloseprøve, det er spørsmålet! Resultatet av slike skolekrangler er som regel kutting i arbeidsmengden i det enkelte faget. Det viste seg å stemme i dag også. Så null gloseprøve. Hurra for de som krangla seg frem til det! I går sluttet jeg tidlig, og i dag begynte jeg sent, noe som resulterte i noe som har blitt nærmest et fremmedord for meg i det siste, nemlig fritid. Fritid brukes som regel til musikk, så i går fikk jeg hørt litt på musikk. I tillegg til at jeg raidet Norli for veggis-kokebøker. Jeg fikk med meg tre bøker. Det var de tre forskjellige de hadde. Men, nok om det! Oppdaget litt nye band og slikt. Etter gårsdagen kan jeg anbefale linken under, til et meget godt album. Nå har jeg ikke spist kjøtt på over et døgn, og jeg har ikke dødd enda. Kanskje overgangen fra kjøtt til null kjøtt ikke er så veldig vanskelig allikevel? Problemene kommer vel kanskje når tidsnøden begynner å dukke opp. Håper noen trår til og gir meg et klaps i riktig retning. Men men, nå må jeg nesten stikke for å rekke jobben. Growing up, I read what I wanted. The books that accounted for much of my elementary and adolescent time came mostly from a relative seven yrs ahead of me in a private school that required students to purchase their books. Over several summers, treasure chests disguised as cardboard boxes containing Salinger and Dumas were mine for the scrounging. At some pt in middle school I heard a rumor that Catcher in the Rye was a "banned book." What a silly notion, I mused. Holden was a seedy jerk with a laboriously dull life. I think another outlaw was Farenheit 451. Now, Bradbury has written better, but what an idea! & the double irony of its being forbidden! Still, 'banned' was just a misnomer label, just a catchy marketing scheme these days. I mean, I have read the books. I have the books. Banned from what? Surely no one can stop me from reading any literature I choose? Of course not, for the most part, maybe. If it is published, it is available for purchase. And if it is hard to get, a public library ought to be able to track it down. That doesn't mean, however, that the library will let you read it. As New York Times reporter Alison Cowan describes in A Library's Approach to Books That Offend, protestors sometimes get controversial material pushed out of sight even at public libraries. What a load of malarkey! What sort of average stupid citizen is imbued with the grace of god and portentious wisdom enough to muddle with the written words of authors and their readers' access to them? No wonder so many fools are reading empty, self-absorbed trash like Twilight. Fear of change and ideas is not something our species has mastered, though change is inevitable and freeflowing ideas often make the process easier. But what's upsettingly funny is that only a fraction of people are Ideas people anyway. What're they so afraid of? Apparently library staff aren't typically considered docile andor calm for nothing; at times they have given in and moved Mein Kampf. Other times they quiet a patron's rumbling by politely explaining library policy. However, if I want to read Hitler's work or some sexually explicit story, then I goddam will. For free if I please. From the public library. Refusing to accept offensive books in a public library cannot destroy the ideas behind them. Those ideas will only manifest elsewhere. And if a black kid picks up a book of Tintin cartoons in a library, he may not like what he sees. How likely is he to feel terribly about the pigment of his skin, though, because of an insulting cartoon? Maybe he will also read MLK and Lincoln and Lenin. His presence in a library suggests he has some sort of reading capacity, after all. Who is anyone to make ideas and history inaccessible? Not cowardly anonymous public library patrons. It's just unfortunate that it's this Jesuit institution that lauds its Mission, its Faith, and all that wonderfully idealistic bologna... while I know there are other schools putting similar, secular ambitions into action with far more practicality. These days the university draws a far different demographic than the one that attracted me here. A lot of my friends have graduated and may not have enormous career accomplishments to show for the last couple yrs, but a level of standards and a set of values left this campus with them around May 2007. I wonder how these guys from class of '66 or '54 or whenever would feel about the current Fordham populace at ground level. Eh, they're all right, I guess. I write here particularly about Fordham as the catastrophist my friend once told me I am. Validly so though, I think. These days a college is as much a corporation as any, and it appears an eternal conflict of forces---academia versus profit---that we must all reconcile ourselves to. But these founders, these people like James E Buckman, Esq., pictured up there, have some belief in Fordham's goals and its students. I'm not suggesting Fordham tackle every issue of impropriety and give the students a say about everything. What I am saying is that Fordham is a shittily put together machine with oil dripping on the driveway, antifreeze spilling into puddles, and drivers who have no voice. So whatever. Three yrs ago, Fordham renewed its contract with Coca Cola after PSJ members demonstrated its ill-treatment of employees in South America. They classify themselves on their myspace as “German Pop/Japanese Pop/Italian Pop” but manage to mix a Kings of Leon vocal timbre with electronic loops and instrumental glory. One could call it an identity crisis, but Deastro provides the listener with an incredible variety of music on the album”Keepers.” While some songs remind me of the intense arrangments of “Sometime Around Midnight” by the The Airborne Toxic Event and “Dawn of the Dead” by Does It Offend You, Yeah, the last song could easily be put on a mixtape with Bon Iver. This band started out as a one man operation, but has grown to be a full band who gives away their music online. I approve. Bono was coming to perform with U2 live for Good Morning America. The murmurs grew louder, the rumors were confirmed gradually by increasingly credible sources, and finally Father McShane, scuzzbucket president of the FUniverse, sent a mass email to the students announcing the coming of Our Savi--- Bono. This shameless publicity stunt would highlight our Fordham *pride* and the *beautiful* campus whose green grass is quickly being run over by concrete. Not to mention, hey, Fordham is Jesuit and whom better to align our institution with than the egotistical, self-righteous bastard Bono? Then again, it was U2. This was a one time opportunity. Not gonna deny I was one of the classic rock kids whose Dad introduced her to U2 and who in turn felt a swoop of underdog vitality every time she heard "Bloody Sunday." But wake up at 4am to get drunk and wait in line with the masses on Edward's Parade in order to see them perform 5 songs at 8am? Not likely. This was only the second full week of classes I had attended so far in the semester. I have my troubles, and even Bono wasn't blessing them away. I chose not to go, but that didn't stop my foolish peers from buzzing me awake at 6:13 in the morning outside my 12th floor window. They were inebriated, they were excited. It was well beyond their bedtimes, after all. And, oh my god, wasn't it rebellious and energizing to be drunk at 6am?! The crowd assembled quickly, not fueled by anticipation or cold toes, no. Once the blob of witnesses had oozed its way through the barricade formation and assembled on Eddie's, it barely consumed half the quad. You would never know it later from the pictures, of course. A desperately disappointing comedian tried to warm up the audience for a bit, and he was so bad the students cheered more ignorantly than ever when Fr. McShane got on the mic to announce U2 at "the best Jesuit University in the nation." What a bastard. Stop trying to show up Georgetown already. You're not accomplishing anything for *us* with this stunt or your academic-less 10 yr plan, McShane. I've pet more compassionate mutts than this man. Ultimately, U2 took its turn on stage. I lay in a white noise coma, wondering for a split second if I would regret missing this chance. But the new album is shit, if the two or three new songs from that morning are any indication. Even when the band played "Beautiful Day" and it went bouncing against brick corners and glass windows there was no uplifting echo of surreal hope. I mean, that's what I want out of U2. They're not gods, but a band with that many albums and that much financial muscle is still unreal. This wasn't some gathering of good people for a good cause. It was a pathetic perversion of rock n roll. It was 5 or 6 songs followed by a student body sagging back to bed, class, or the bar. These young pups couldn't handle the day without their proper beauty sleep, and U2 had left Fordham with nothing but vertigo for the wimpy tired kids, some promotional bullshit,and an invisible stain on the steps of Keating. What an otherwise elegant & significant spot--a place where countless Fordham College undergraduates received their diplomas in May--now tarnished by the flagrant hour-long commercial of the likes of Bono. U2 raped my ears that morning. Three days later Fordham mass emailed all the students again with a list of hyperlinks to all the Bono/McShane media coverage: Look how proud we should be of Fordham! It's a gated university in the *Bronx* perfect for accoustic and security set-up for the so-called superband U2 to promote buying its bazillionth crappy album!! I can do nothing but guffaw at this sham. I wonder how much genuine criticism and reporting exists any more. Do big networks inherently have to give positive coverage? Is Fordham's Ram, a poor attempt at writing that requires happy stories about every FU event regardless of reality, realistically preparing people for the writing world? More on shitastic publications at Fordham University later. An acquaintance who interns at ABC described a "screaming throng" of students singing at the top of their lungs at an event that was "certainly one for Fordham." One what? One more shallow attempt at puffing up some superficial pride? That must be it, because now it is Bono who adorns the main page of Fordham's website.
