Tooey, the puppy girl, took Winner’s Bitch at the Greater Clark County Kennel Club dog show. This makes her the top not-yet-champion girl Irish Water Spaniel in the show.

And on top of that, she took Winner’s Bitch over the other 5 bitches in the show. That’s wonderful for a couple of reasons:

• Because she won over enough other bitches, Tooey won a 3 point major. In shows where there are fewer competitors, the winner might get only 1 point. And to win a championship, the dog (or bitch) must have won 15 points, with at least two majors. So Tooey is on her way.
• Tooey’s a puppy. The other bitches competing were all older dogs. For an immature puppy to win out over more mature, developed, and experienced dogs is a real compliment to the puppy.
• She won a stunning plaque from the Irish Water Spaniel Club of America. Because this was a supported entry by the IWSCA, the club supplied trophies for the winners. (The trophies were made by Jack McDaniel.)

Below is a picture of Tooey “stacked.” It’s a side view, with her front legs straight up and down, and her back legs angled back. This position is supposed to show something about the dog’s structure, but I’ve never really understood what. I suppose I’ll learn someday.

Thanks to Stacy and Tammy for grooming Tooey. Stacy will work on Tooey some more tomorrow, so let’s hope Tooey does as well (or better!) in tomorrow’s show.

Cooper the Barbarian

This morning, Jayme gave Cooper a thorough going over in preparation for the Greater Clark County Kennel Club show. He looks much more refined now — clean-shaven face, shaped topknot, combed out ears.

Not that it did him a whole lot of good in the ring. He did get Reserve Winner’s Dog. Basically, it’s second place with no points. Second place sounds pretty good, yes? But consider this: when there are only two dogs, second place is also last place.

The dog who beat him has a better coat — one that hasn’t been beat up from running through the fields. But when it comes down to it, Cooper would much rather run through the fields and hunt ducks. That at least uses some skill and thought. By comparison, running around in circles in the show ring seems (and often is, unfortunately) pointless.

Well, we always knew he was – but now Animal Planet agrees!

You’ve probably seen Andy around LambShoppe, but you might’ve thought he was a particularly large and somewhat tangled skein of white yarn.  If you haven’t met him, allow me to introduce you: Andrew is a champion puli, a show dog who was invited to Westminster but who claims he prefers our yarn to the show ring.  Andy may not have won his class at Westminster (surely a momentary lapse on the part of the judge!), but he certainly attracted the attention of the media. Not only will he star on Dogs 101 this Saturday (7 pm on Comcast channel 30), he will also be featured in an upcoming ‘coffee table’ book of dogs in action by noted photographer Tim Flach.  Make sure to plan your weekend around Andy’s television debut. Should be wonderful to knit along with, eh?

Around 70 champions are set to compete for the annual Douglas Uytengsu Memorial Cup Boxer National Championship Dog Show slated on November 29, 2009 at the Bonifacio High Street in Global City, Taguig.

Now running on its 25^th year, this event is presented by Alaska Milk Corporation. Organizer Boxer Club of the Philippines is bringing in Specialty Show Judge and Champion Breeder from Canada Shirley Bell to examine boxer champions for the following categories: Best Baby Puppy in Show; Winners Dog and Best of Winners; Winners Bitch; Best Opposite Sex and Best Philippine Born in Show; Runner-Up in Best in Show, and; Best in Show and 2009 Douglas Uytengsu Memorial Cup Winner.

Dog lovers are invited to bring their canine pets to witness the display of the most premium breeders and kennels in the country.  There will also be veterinarians available to provide free check-ups for any dogs that attend the event.  Limited vaccine drops for dogs are also available.

The 25^th Douglas Uytengsu Memorial Cup is  made possible by Alaska Milk Corporation with sponsors Pfizer Animal Health, Samsung, and Royal Canin and in cooperation with Bonifacio High Street.  This show is under the rules and regulations of the Philippine Canine Club, Inc. No entrance fee will be charged.  Venue opens at 1:00 PM and the actual dog show starts at 4:00 PM.

Sist helg gikk turen til Letohallen for vår del. Det virket som det var noen færre utstillere der denne gangen. Muligens fordi Herning utstillingen i Danmark også gikk denne helgen.

 Lørdagens utstilling ble en langdryg affære. Vi hadde behaglig oppmøte kl 11, men var ikke i ringen før 13.30 så her har et eller annet sviktet.

Søndagens program var veldig presist for vår del.

Vi oppnådde CK og 3beste tispe lørdag og første på søndag. Gratulerer spesielt til Dolma Ling`s Eyla med Cert søndag.

 Tidsskjemaet gjorde at jeg også rakk å følge med på wheatenterriere denne helgen. Det var en stor nedtur. Dommerne mente at kun Virtawheat Uno Nikito holdt certkvalitet og en HP til Virtawheat Cheik. Jeg er helt enig i deres vurdering.

 Våre venner i Kennel Softeng`s hadde denne helgen tatt turen til Danmark med stort hell.

Deres flotte wheaten veteran Little Handy To Have ble lørdag BIM og BIR Vet. Og 3BIS vet søndag. Norske Patshabel`s Ulvi ble 2BTK med Cert søndag og dermed Dansk champion.

Så de norske gjorde bra i fra seg.

Noe betenkelig er det at lørdag var det 2 veteran tisper som stakk av med de to førsteplassene i tispeklassen.

Hvor blir det av arvtagerne som helst skal være litt bedre en sine mødre?

 Vi er nå godt i gang med planleggingen av vinterens rekreasjonsopphold i Spania. Det kan se ut som vi kan få til en aldri så liten hunde utstilling i Spania også. Lille Maisa til Dorthe og Steinar må jo få sin internasjonale debut. Den internasjonale utstillingen i Granada burde passe bra.

Luther and Palma

Yesterday we went to the Sporting Terrier of Yorkshire Open Show. Like all terrier group shows there was a high quality entry. Our breed judge was Roger Cruden, and he gave BOB to Sally Brown’s Lastarean Dufek, Reserve BOB to Palma and BP to Luther. Gloria was shown in the Veteran Stakes, judged by David Guy, and took a very nice 2nd place behind Harry Horn’s Champion Sealyham. David also judged BIS and BPIS and Luther finished off a lovely day by winning BPIS4.

So that’s 5 shows  and 5 BP awards – and three group placings as well! Not a bad record for my special little boy!

I decided to tour my brother to the King Rama Park where I had fun spending time alone before.  We dropped by at the Mall Bangkapi for the second day of the Dog Show, where we saw the cutest Labrador ever.  We had pizza for lunch and headed to the park after the dog show.  We had fun exploring the maze and my brother and the boyf had their moment together rowing on the lake while I was left alone browsing through my mobile phone.  I never thought they took candid photos of me.  Enjoy viewing the pics!

Here is my outdated post.  Couple of weeks ago my boyf and my brother visited me in Bangkok.  The boyf arrived last Oct. 17 and my brother arrived a week after.  We visited a lot of things in Bangkok.  Which includes camwhoring in every single event.  I just discovered that the boyf has loads of picture of his self compared to me.  I know he will hate me for this, but I just can’t help but post his self-obsessed pictures.  Hahahaha, we even went for karaoke and he never asked me to pose with him.

So much of his camwhoring moments, before we went to the airport to pick up my little brother, we visited the Grand Dog Show at The Mall Bangkapi.  One of the reasons why the boyf is so excited to visit Bangkok.  We took a lot of pictures of the dogs and oh my!  I was so impressed about how they handle each dogs with proper care.  So different in Cebu.  I had fun with the Pom dogs and yes saw some cute little huskies.  Too bad there was no pitbull when we came.

and of course, I would not miss to show you my outfit post.

It’s pretty awesome having the boyf around because I have someone who can take my pictures at a decent angle hahahah!

The weekend has been exhausted but very exciting!! We assisted to two Dogshows, the Exposición Nacional (CAC)  e Internacional (CAC-CACIB) Canina de Vélez-Málaga, 23th and 24th of October, in Málaga, Spain.

The first day, Saturday, the judge for pekingese was Lisbeth Mach, from Sweeden. She really liked Mammi, she repeated three times the word “super” since the moment we entered on the ring. So we are very happy with her verdict. Also she was able to realize that Mammi has russian lines, so it was great! We win the best pekingese puppy, a Very Good. But we could not obtain any prize in the best puppy show. It was very complicated because it was a all round, all the groups together, and the spanish judge didn´t take any time to look properly any dog. So…

The Sunday Mammi also did a very good show, and the judge, Manola Poggesi from Italy, like her too, but she didn´t comment a lot. I didn´t like too much this judge because she tried to open the mouth of Mammi, quite disturbingly, and Mammi refused this act. The judge tried to look her teeth but it was very complicated. I think she didn´t wait to me to open her mouth. Finally when Mammi was on the floor, the judge realized that her mouth is correct. This fuss was only to look if Mammi has a good closed mouth….Also Mammi got the best pekingese puppy, a Very good, and we gone to finals. But there was another time the same… we didn´t win…

But are very happy with Mammi, she likes the ring and she likes walk in front of the people and other animals!!

Also she did a very good job walking and posing!! So the weekend was totally amazing!

ジャッジに寄って違います
フリーステイを長く見るジャッジもいれば、フリーステイは一瞬で
すぐにラウンドを要求するジャッジもいます
この時に指示を無視して、いつまでももたもたフリーステイをしていたら
ジャッジは不快に感じてしまうかもしれません

せっかくちょっと前からリンクサイドに来ていても
自分のわんちゃんのお手入れと、立たせることに夢中で
肝心なことを見ていなくて、審査時にあたふたしている方を見かけます

フリーステイ時もただ突っ立ているだけじゃだめですよ
綺麗なフリースタイルを見せることもありますが
ハンドラーと犬とのコミュニケーションも審査のうちに入るんです

頭がぽわ〜としていて、審査開始前に写真を撮る気力がなかった・・・。
頭がぽわ〜はいつものことですけどね！

OK, I’ll admit it. After yesterday, I was really hoping that Tooey would win Best of Breed again today. She is certainly (IMHO) beautiful enough.

But instead, I was able to take pleasure in another goal that I had going into this show. Like a lot of dogs, Tooey has been a bit shy with men. And I already knew that today’s judge was going to be a man. So one of my goals was that Tooey would not freak out at being examined by the male judge.

We’ve been practicing. I have been approaching strange and not-so-strange men everywhere we go, asking them if they would give Tooey a cookie. Several weeks ago we had a major breakthrough at Colleen and Gary’s house.

At the beginning of the evening, Tooey was being stand-offish with Gary. Not running away, just barely nosing forward and then stepping back several paces when he tried to pet her. But Gary persevered, and by the end of the evening, she actually approached him, asked for the cookie, and let him pet her topknot and ears.

That gave me hope, so I kept it up. At parks, on the sidewalks, in front of stores, at conformation class, I would scout likely male prospects. Russ pitched in by asking some of the men at Tooey’s puppy socialization class to work with her, too.

Food helps. In the ring today, Tooey knew I had her favorite treat in my pocket, and when the judge stepped forward to examine her, she stood still, not backing away. And then, when he moved down her body, I stepped around, stuffed a treat in her face, and joy of joys, she wagged her tail! You can see in the video at about 0:40:

Tooey and I went into the ring at the Vancouver Kennel Club show today, and did amazingly well. In fact, this 10 month old puppy won Best of Breed. (With a little help from me and my very generous friends.)

Having won Best of Breed, Tooey and I also competed for a placement in the Sporting Group. We had no expectations, except to get some experience and hopefully have a good time.

And that was good — because that’s exactly what we got — I got experience and Tooey had a good time. She even nuzzled up to the handler of the German Wirehaired Pointer behind us, asked for a cookie, and got one.

So, thank you to Colleen for amazing grooming help, to Tammy for grooming and showing tips and moral support, to Tom and Jill for bringing some other IWS to compete with, and to Colleen and Judith for letting us have this delightful little girl.

Having my house on the market feels a lot like what I imagine owning a show dog feels like.  Y’all know how I am about analogies so bare with me.

Much like owning a show dog, you make an effort everyday to maintain its appearance.  Knowing it would be a tragedy if on the day you chose not to brush your prize winning dog, “Felicity’s Diamond Jim*”, and while taking him for a walk, you have a chance encounter with an adoring fan that would give anything for a picture with “James”.  So you oblige, not wanting to let anyone down, all the while knowing “James” does not look his best.

Same with the house.  Imagine the misfortune if on the one day I chose to let my chores slide, someone wanted to view the house?  While I am generally a neat person, I wake up a little earlier to get everything in order.  The bed is made everyday, the toiletries are put away, there’s nary a dirty dish in the sink, and the pillows are given an extra fluff.  I perform a final walk-through before leaving for work , assuming this will be the day it will be shown to its new owner!  Very much like the scene from American Beauty when Annette Bening frantically cleans a home before the scheduled Open House…”I will sell this house today…I will sell this house today…I- will sell – this house – to-DAY!” I perform this mantra as I lock my front door and remove my key.

No amount of chanting will make the phone ring.  Lord knows I’ve tried.  So many more days than not, it isn’t shown.  And of those few, even fewer come back to take a second peek.  I come home from work and make an effort to avoid the rug so as not to disturb the lines in the carpet that indicate it has been freshly vacuumed.  I wash my dishes immediately after I use them, if I use them at all, and I tuck myself into bed knowing I was simply mistaken:  tomorrow will be the day the new owner of my house will look at it for the first time.

So when the phone call from the real estate agent comes announcing a showing, I go into “AKC Championship” mode:

::Announcer::  “We’re here with Susie, the owner of ‘Poplar Drive House of Susan’, who took a heartbreaking third place in the last showing.  Susie, do you feel like Poplar is up for the challenge in this round of competition?”

::Me::  “Oh yes!  Poplar has been combed and groomed and coddled and exercised more so in the last three weeks than she’s ever been!  We learned a lot from our last showing and we feel like we’ve got what it takes to overcome that adversity.”  (While straightening the drapes) “Ain’t that right, Poplar?”  (Picking a piece of lint off the floor) “We’re gonna get ‘em this time, aren’t we girl?”

Making it past the first showing and on to a second showing is like winning Best in Breed.  All dogs in the same breed have pretty much the same characteristics.  However, each dog offers its own little something special that sets it apart from the others.  The potential home buyer has a certain set of criteria in mind for their next home; size, style, location, price range.  In this case, mine was among the list of homes that met this criteria so when they saw it in person, they liked it so much so they want to look at it a second time, thus awarding my home the “Best in Breed” ribbon!

While I am still feeling the buzz of having won Best in Breed, I am called upon to compete for “Best in Show”!  The mind reels at the thought of a third showing!  In the same manner the handler puts her prize dog on the table for the judges to see, smoothing her coat, straightening her legs and tail, I put my house on the proverbial table for a good grooming, too.

The pansies are holding their heads up high, the drapes in the dining room are pulled back with care, the music is playing lightly, and the grass is trimmed to perfection.

Smooth…straighten…and for Pete’s sake, please don’t bark.

The joys of journalism: me, in the media lounge at a dog and cat exhibition.

I am so official.

I went to the “Meet The Breeds” event today in Midtown. The exhibition was put on by the Cat Fanciers Association and the American Kennel Club. Picture a convention center full of every breed of cat and dog imaginable to man. Then, picture thousands of people milling about petting these animals.

I’m currently putting a clip together from the event. it will be focused on the exhilarating new event called “feline agility.” It’s thrilling. If you love cats.

Only if you love cats.

Especially when it’s just a week before a dog show. But puppies don’t necessarily know exactly where their faces (and other body parts) are in space. Or, at least, this puppy didn’t.

Tooey and Russ were in the back yard, playing fetch, when Tooey returned to Russ with this injury just under her eye. She’d run into something. Not sure what it was. Could have been the corner of the deck. Could have been a rogue branch sticking out from the rhododendron bush. Could have been any number of things.

Fortunately, it looks like just an abrasion. We cleaned it up and have some ointment we’re putting on it twice a day. It’s already looking better.

Hope the judges overlook it next weekend at the Vancouver Kennel Club show next weekend.

Her var det kaldt. Brr!! Ellers var det godt å være tilbake. Koselig å endelig å kunne føre en litt lengre samtale med dem man er glad i uten og måtte tenke på kostnadene hele tiden.

Så tilbake til Bratislava. Jeg tror at vi tilsammen var 4 norske  som stilte ut schnauzere i Bratislava denne helgen. 3 med dverg og en med riesen.

Geir Rønning med  Gianteros Hocus Pocus fikk Very good på sin bedømmelse etter knall hard konkurranse. Det var hele 175 påmeldte Riesenschnauzere.

Dessverre greide jeg ikke å få bilder av de 2 andre norske utstillerne  med dvergschnauzere. I følge oppslag ved ringene oppnådde Kent Olsen  Very Good med sin Greypixs Dark Dante og Signe Kleppe Lund Excellent med Solhaven`s Drage Bono og Very Good med Greypixs Dream Xtreem.

Derimot greide jeg å få med meg bildene av BIR og BIM hundene både fra wheaten terriere og dvergschnauzer sort.

Judging appointments are a bit like buses. I don’t have any for ages then three come along together. After judging Parson Russell Terriers in Finland and in the United States, it was up to Carlisle for the very first championship show held by the Northern Parson Russell Terrier Club.

To be asked to judge this inaugural show was a great honour, and the committee had really worked hard to make it a very special occasion. There were souvenir catalogues, special medallions for every winner, even cake and wine to toast the club. BIS went to Heythrop Tia and RBIS to Digaden Glamouruss who was also BP.
