Fourth of July is here and that means one thing, well more than one thing, but the most feared is fireworks! Loud noises can be hell for dogs or other animals. We know its great to have them with you to watch the fireworks and everyone thinks its cute, but the safest place for your pet is at home. Our dog Dante looks like he is going to jump out of his skin when there is thunder or fireworks. He can’t handle the loud noises and has issues calming down, but we still love him. He will literally jump into our laps on the couch or into our bed with us. Imagine a 100lb. German Shepherd jumping into your lap without warning, I know, crazy! You may get upset sometimes, but someday you will miss it, so enjoy it now. Here is an article from about.com:

As many pet lovers know, fireworks and thunder storms can cause a great deal of stress for some animals. Fear of loud sounds – fireworks, thunder, gunshot – are called noise phobias. For a pet affected by loud noises, this is a terrifying and uncomfortable time; both for the pet and the people. Your pet cannot control their reaction to loud noises. Many therapies exist to help with this condition.

Learn to recognize the signs of noise phobias and some tips to reduce fears. As always, talk to your vet if this is a problem for your pet. Behavior modification alone works well for some pets, others may need medications in addition to behavior modification to be safe and not injure themselves trying to “escape” the noise.

Commonly seen signs of noise phobias include:

Shaking, trembling

Excessive drooling

Barking, howling

Trying to hide or get into / out of the house, fence, or other enclosure

Refusing to eat food

Some animals may loose bladder or bowel control or experience temporary diarrhea from prolonged stress

Please note: The signs mentioned above are general signs, and could be indicative of many different diseases or conditions. Please consult with your veterinarian if these signs persist after fireworks or thunder has subsided, or if you suspect that your pet may have been poisoned or is otherwise ill.

Trying to escape from the loud noises can mean broken windows, torn fences, chewed doors or dog crates, and result in lacerations, foot pad injuries, teeth and mouth injuries or worse as they try to run from the disturbingly loud noises.

It doesn’t matter if the fears are “rational” or not. It should be noted that scolding a frightened animal is not effective will only intensify the fears.

Practice Safety

Keep pets home It may be tempting to bring along your dog(s) so everyone can enjoy the fun, but the loud noises aren’t usually fun for pets. Plus, there are many other hazards – fire, food (dietary indiscretion), getting lost in the confusion, etc. that make staying home in a comfortable safe environment a good choice.

Keep pets indoors if possible It is advisable to close the curtains and turn on the TV or radio to provide some distraction. Calming or classical music are better than some TV or radio noise choices. Therapeutic music such as Through A Dog’s Ear often work better at keeping your dog calm and providing an audio distraction.

Provide a safe “escape” place Many times pets will seek out a small den-like place (such as a crate), if they are fearful or stressed. If you do not already have a crate, bed or similar place that your pet can call his “own,” it is recommended to create that safe place and familiarize your pet with it before needed, as a means of reducing stress during fireworks and thunderstorms.

Use a leash or carrier If you must be outside with your pet, keep the pet on a leash or in carrier at all times.

Practice fire safety Keep pet away from matches, lighter fuel, open fires, and fireworks – especially ones that are lighted on the ground. Pets may try to sniff (or eat) fireworks, and pet hair can easily catch fire if too close to the fireworks.

Take pet for a walk first If possible, make sure that you pet has time to “use the restroom” before the fireworks start. Some pets are too frightened to void once the fireworks begin, and this may lead to an “accident” later on.

Make sure pet ID is current Make sure that your pet has proper identification tags, with current information, in case s/he gets away. This will help the local authorities (who are quite busy this time of year handling frightened runaways)

Hope that this helps make your Fouth of July experience a little better and fun for all. Enjoy!

Millions of people are looking for great pets which they can take good care of for a long time. Some

Millions of people are looking for great pets which they can take good care of for a long time. Some go for extraordinary choice of pets such as snakes and crocodiles, while others go for lovable and trainable ones such as dogs and cats. If you were given the chance to raise a pet, what kind of pet would you want to have? Dogs are actually the number one choices people would likely choose when talking about pets because they can be tamed, trained and they can also be trusted when left at home. Thus, you are not only having a pet to entertain you, but also a guard to offer you safety and convenience. Thus, if you want to give back to your pet all the wonderful things he had offered, give him the right choice of dog collar and since he is a male dog, a spike studded one can be great.

A spike studded dog collar is one of the famous designs for pet collars and really great for dogs. Most spike studded collars are made out of the finest quality leather and are made by most trusted manufacturers. Don’t think that you will be running out of choices to make when talking about spike studded collars because there are a lot of them. These pet accessories are great for dogs for dog owners can really place name tags for dogs’ easy identification.

There are a lot of reasons why you need to choose a spike studded dog collar and one would be for fashion. Just like humans, pups also deserve to be fashionable. However, they can’t do the thing themselves. If you own a pet and you want to make him great looking with the kind of accessories he has, you need to think of the right accessories you can offer him and make sure that your dog can still do well while using it. The collar is not really that essential as others would think, but if only you know how beneficial it is, you’ll realize.

Secure your pet with the right spike studded dog collar and make him feel really fine. Don’t think that buying a new one is just an unnecessary spending, it is not. There are a lot of affordable collars in the market, so choose one that would really fit your pet and try to be picky in terms of the design, color and durability. Your pet will surely benefit the most from its collar and you too, as the owner.

House Training Small Dogs Is More Than Potty Training

When you think about house training small dogs, what is the first thing that comes to mind?

For most pet owners, the answer is potty training. While this is certainly an important part of training your small dog, it is only one piece of the whole picture. House training small dogs is about teaching them how to live in harmony with the humans of their pack.

Each household will have minor differences in what is considered acceptable behavior, but the base line expectations will be the same.

No peeing or pooping in the house

No incessant barking

Eating father’s sandwich when he’s not looking is generally not good

Chewing on sisters new leather purse is really bad

Chasing the cat through the house and breaking grandma’s favorite lamp will not earn any brownie points

And the list goes on, but you get the picture. Housetraining your small dog means instilling proper “inside” behavior, the same as you would teach your kids.

Getting An Early Start

Getting an early start on house training your small dog will yield the best results. Mother dogs start training their puppies from the moment they are born; the training we provide is merely an extension of their mothers.

If you are fortunate enough to start with a puppy raised by a good breeder in conjunction with a balanced mother, much of your work will have already been done for you. That does not mean you can breathe easy and shirk your responsibilities of continuing to build on the foundation started by others.

If you are starting with a juvenile or adult dog, the process of establishing your role as pack leader by setting boundaries and earning their trust and respect is the same – it may just take a little longer, that’s all.

Setting Boundaries

There are likely to be areas of the home that are off limits to your small dog; these may include the couch, dining table or your bed. Bringing home your new dog, opening the door and letting him race inside like he owns the place is akin to turning your children loose in the candy store and saying have at it.

Limiting your dog’s access to certain areas of the home that you claim as yours will set boundaries and communicate your expectations. This process provides stability and structure for your dog, something that is very important to them and is a key building block for successful house training.

A Den For Your Small Dog

Providing your dog with their very own “space” is critical for their wellbeing. Wild canines seek out small sheltered areas for their dens, a place where they feel safe and secure; a dog bed or dog crate fills this primal need quite nicely for our domesticated canine companions.

By providing your small dog with a den, you are creating a home base from which they can gradually be introduced to the rest of the house. If they are feeling overwhelmed at any point, they will have a place of safety and security to retreat to.

As a side benefit, if the den is properly sized, it is a great potty training tool as dogs will not willingly eliminate in their dens.

Fundamental Training Commands

All training starts with fundamentals. Teaching your small dog the basic commands of “Sit”, “Stay”, “Come” and “Quiet” as a first priority will make the house training easier on both of you. These basic commands function much like their den; at any time stress levels elevate or your small dog becomes confused, they have a safety point to return to.

By firmly ingraining these commands, you will always be able to regain their full attention in a split second. This control has saved many a small dog from severe injury and even death on many occasions.

In summary

As stated in the beginning, house training small dogs is about much more than just potty training. You are essentially teaching your pet manners; you are outlining for them the boundaries and limitations of your home and your relationship.

Done properly, this will create a pleasant atmosphere in which your pet will thrive. Pets often act out, chewing on shoes or furniture, whining and barking incessantly or even behaving aggressively when they are fearful or unsure of what to do.

Proper training will instill a feeling of security and go a long ways towards curtailing these and other behaviors. While chewing and barking can also be symptomatic of other issues, the better the training, the easier these issues will be to deal with.

Why a Mastiff Dog Is a Very Good Dog to Own

Why a Mastiff dog is a very good dog to own. We have had 4 English Mastiffs over the years, and every one of them was a big lovable dog!

The Mastiff comes in many breeds, like the Bull Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff, English Mastiff and so one. The most common, and the 4 that we had over the years, are the English Mastiff. They are also known as the “Gentle Giant”.

The English Mastiff has a life expectancy of roughly 10 years. They are a very large size breed of dog, and they are very friendly, and are good with kids. A mastiff will be protective over the family. It is good to have your mastiff puppy or dog live inside if you can, as they are a very affectionate dog, and love to be around people and the family.

English Mastiffs have droopy looking eyes, and they usually walk around slowly, like they are trying to be careful. If you take your English Mastiff out for a walk in town, you are going to attract some nice attention, as the dog will bring people to you, and they will want to ask questions, because most people do not get to see a large English Mastiff up close and personal like that!

Mastiff’s need a nice soft place to lay down and rest, so make sure you give them a nice bed to sleep in. If they are left to sleep on the floor, or hard surface of a dog house, they tend to get large callouses on then joints just like a camel does. Owning a Mastiff is a little like owning a small pony actually! I like Mastiff’s so much, I wrote a book about them, called “Rusty the Runaway Mastiff” I think anyone that has a kid, and wants or owns an Mastiff, should read the book, it will teach you lots more about owning a Mastiff dog.

Puppy Dog Training: Consistency Pays Dividends

One of the first puppy dog training techniques you will need to learn when you bring your new pet home is that of house training. A new dog that is left to their own devices and is not taught where to go will carry this behaviour through into their adult life, and this will make training them to go outside when they are older a lot more difficult.

It is not as difficult as most people seem to think to housetrain a puppy; the secret here lies in you being consistent and can be achieved in a relatively short space of time.

Although the person you have bought your puppy from may have given you assurances that the dog is well and healthy one of the first trips you should make when getting your new puppy home is to the local vet’s surgery. Have your pet checked over just in case there may be any intestinal problems that could make housetraining more difficult.

Something you need to consider at the beginning is whether you are going to allow your pet the run of the whole garden or if you are going to have a designated area for them to use. It is usually recommended that you have a “poo corner” as this not only makes life easier for you when it comes to clearing up any mess but it also helps your puppy as there is no confusion as to where they can and can’t go to do their business.

When puppy dog training you have to realise that your puppy will not know it’s done something wrong unless you tell them so. Shouting and screaming or even resorting to hitting your dog when they have an accident in the home will not do any good whatsoever. This kind of behaviour from you will only succeed in making the dog afraid of you and this could do more harm for your relationship as the dog grows up. You have to let the puppy that you’re not happy about what’s happened but do not go overboard.

Your tone of voice should be used when scolding your pet when an accident occurs, like wise when the dog goes out and uses the toilet in the proper place you should praise them considerably. It’s a puppy’s goal in life to please their owners, praise will always be remembered and they will do their best to keep pleasing you.

House training means making a schedule and sticking to it. You need to learn your pets sleeping habits and be there when they wake up as they will surely want to go at this time. Also have a set bedtime and take them out last thing, this helps the dog get into a routine as well, keep the dog out until they do something and then praise them and put them to bed.

Remember when puppy dog training that a pup will easily get excited and could have an accident in the home, try to keep extremes to a minimum until your pet has got used to asking to go outside.

Dog Training Advice: Consistency Will Reap Benefits

Every dog owner wants an animal that is well behaved. One of the best pieces of dog training advice you will ever receive is to start your training whilst the dog is still a puppy. Everyone loves to see their pets respond to simple requests like sit, stay and fetch.

Why train your dog as a pup? Simple answer it’s easier. In this way you can mould your pet into exactly the way in which you want them. A dog that has been trained properly will have fewer tendencies towards unwanted behaviour much in the same way that we teach our children from a young age, a puppy as with a young child only wants to please their owner so when still young they will be more accepting of what they are told they can and can’t do.

Taking your dog to training classes is a very good way to train him/her but do not forget that this has to be followed up at home, there is no point in taking it to classes then not doing anything at home until the next training session. Dog training advice you receive at these classes must be an ongoing thing or the dog will never get to learn even the simplest of tasks.

Obedience training is vital if you want to have a dog that is well behaved this also has the plus of you gaining a dog that will be less aggressive.

Another good piece of advice when training your dog is that if they do something you don’t like you must correct them in the instance, dogs memories tend to be a little short and trying to correct a dog at a later time will only succeed in confusing the animal. The best way to do this is with your tone of voice do not punish your pet using a severe method such as slapping or hitting them with a rolled up newspaper as some people might tell you. This could have you end up with a dog that is aggressive as it’s a natural response for an animal to defend itself. Something else you could do is to simply ignore the dog, all dogs crave attention and by ignoring your pet they quickly get the message that if they behave that way again they will be frozen out.

Training a dog to be on a leash takes time as no animal likes being tethered. Again doing this at a young age and starting with a simple collar is probably the best way to start. You can then once they are used to it start introducing the leash.

Food training is very important, you should be able to put your pet’s food down and take it away again with no signs of aggression. To start with only take the food away for a brief moment then give it back you can then extend this as the dog gets used to it. The dog will then learn that no matter how long their food is away they will always get it back again.

Dog training takes a lot of patience and a lot of repetition so you as the owner need to understand this piece of dog training advice; you are not going to teach your pet everything overnight. Patience and a loving demeanour are what are most necessary if you want your pet to behave in the best possible way.
