To achieve this status from Dolby, the Dubbing Stage went through an extensive approval process including: verifying speaker positions relative to mix position, tuning the mixing studio to match Dolby specifications, and matching Dolby required speaker levels. Dolby Applications Engineer Steve Smith visited Full Sail to commission and approve the Dubbing Stage as a Dolby Digital print master facility, and to complete the print master for the film, Letters to God, which used the Dubbing Stage to mix the film’s final soundtrack.

Full Sail’s Dubbing Stage features an up-to-date Harrison MPC3-D mixing desk, high-definition video and 35mm projectors, and multiple Pro Tools HD systems, as well as theater seats for private screenings and an Academy Award-winning theater surround sound system from JBL.

For many many years I’ve been in to all things TECH!!! It all started with my passion for a nice sound system at the age of 12. When I turned 12 years I bought my first Kenwood receiver and a set of generic bookshelf speakers. I truly felt like a HiFi aristocrat. A year later, with money I received from selling my snowmobile I bought a Kenwood Double Tape Deck with Dolby B and C Noise Reduction. This was a top of the line piece of equipment for it’s time. Shortly thereafter, I purchased a Kenwood CD player with money I received from confirmation. This was a big decision for me since CDs were very new at the time. I debated the lack of being able to record, the initial investment, and the longevity of CD technology and based on my research made the plunge. Look at what CD technology has led to now?

Over the next few years I would add a television and a VCR and eventually take the entire system to college. My system gained a nameskae that would forever be known as the “Heathaplex.” People would ask to come by and watch a movie at the Heathaplex. I certainly had no problem showing off my system, the sound quality and the surround sound system. Over the years, the Heathaplex would grow and upgrade. I started to sell of pieces of equipment to purchase new ones. The Heathaplex would come with me to Air Force Pilot Training in Del Rio, TX to my first assignment at Farichild AFB in Spokane, WA. This is where I purchased my first projection screen televison. The Heathaplex moved with me to Charleston AFB, SC during my time as an airlift pilot and eventually to my current home in Leavenworth, KS. It was during the move that my projection television was damaged beyond repair as well as a DVD player and a VCR. Once I received replacement value for the damaged items I purchased a Plasma television and a Blu Ray player. The Heathaplex is in full effect with 7.1 THX Surround Sound and 1080p vision. In short, the Heathaplex is off the Hizzle!!!

Now you see where my passion stemmed from, but it certainly doesn’t stop there. I’ve been exposed to computers since the first grade and never passed up the opportunity to crash a computer or physically take it apart to fix them. Tyvärr är det fortfarande för dyrt att köpa BluRay (BD) filmer till fullpris, speciellt boxar så som det ser ut nu får det bli att rota runt i billiglådorna och kika efter kampanjer ett tag till. Boxar får köpas på DVD så länge tills priserna sjunker. I stort sett alla filmer som jag köpte nu är på kampanj på cdon, men Inglourious Basterds vill jag ha direkt den kommer så den fick det snällt bli till fullpris. Transformers filmerna är dock ett måste så även den fick det bli köp på direkt, dock till ett lockande specialpris på 399.- Så från och med nu kommer jag inte bara tipsa om köpfilm på DVD utan även på BluRay.

Well, no, not really – but after seeing a preview of U2 3D in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s recently-turned-up-to-eleven Foster Theater, my 12-year-old daughter and I left the place feeling like we had actually seen the band in person.

I’ve never seen U2 live, and I didn’t get a chance to see this movie during its limited 2007 theatrical run, so during the opening moments after we’d put on our viewing glasses, I felt that pre-show excitement in my gut.

And when the first notes of the opening number roared through the speakers, I got a genuine goosebump rush–which would happen again at least a half-dozen times during the 85-minute movie.

The depth and natural effectiveness of the 3-D projection is absolutely fantastic. We said afterward that during some of the wide-angle shots, it seemed as though we were watching the foreground projected on a scrim while the stadium was an actual physical backdrop on the stage behind the screen.

At the same time, the audio was loud enough to engulf us without being distorted or hurting our hears, and sounded rich with directional layering and detail. There were a few moments when I really couldn’t tell if a fan’s cheer was a concert-goer captured live or someone in the theater next to me.

The upgrades to the Foster Theater are just plain amazing: Besides the new 3-D capable projector, it’s got a bigger screen, more seats and Dolby 7.1 surround sound. (You want a more ringing endorsement? Jon Shapiro, one of the movie’s producers, said after the screening, “I’ve seen this movie a thousand times, and this is probably the best I’ve seen it.”)

Just like at an actual concert, we felt like clapping after each song and cheering at the first few notes of the next one. More than once, I had to resist the urge to sing along when Bono held the mike up to the crowd, and I got a lump in my throat a couple times, too.

I almost wanted to stand up to encourage the encore.

Here’s another bit of awesome: Theatrical tickets for this movie weren’t cheap in the first place, and you’re not going to get to see it on DVD until the 3-D technology is ready for the home market, but the Rock Hall is including admission to U2 3D in its regular ticket price and showing the movie something like 16 times a week – the full schedule is here – until Jan. 2. That’s just a ridiculous bargain, and it makes a visit to the hall that much cooler. –Submitted by John Booth (read more from guest blogger John here, on his site.)

No question that many veterans remain of the OpenGL – DirectX wars. The two API’s battled for dominance, and for the most part, DirectX won out on the Windows front. But Microsoft didn’t rest on its laurels. from 9 to 10, and soon 11, each version brought with it vast improvements over the previous version. The 3D hardware stayed in stride, and multiplied in power each generation. At this moment, near photo-realistic environments being rendered in real time is being thoroughly explored.

But what about the audio in games? While OpenGL and DirectX locked horns, PC audio was in the midst of its own battle. A3D and EAX; both were promising realistic 3D audio. A3D fell early, leaving EAX the victor by default. With the PC Audio market in their hand, Creative began to release a new version of EAX but with one caveat: Creative hardware was needed to utilize anything over EAX 2.0. The company used this fact to dominate the sound card market for years.

On the hardware side, sound cards have improved over the years, but certainly not to the extent of graphics cards. Each generation brought higher sample rates, upsampling, and high end cards now support Dolby Digital and DTS real time encoding. The newer hardware sounds great, but is PC audio where it should be? On the consoles, Dolby Digital is pretty much standard in all games, and that is one of the problems in the PC realm: There are no standards. No standard API, no standard hardware support, No baseline that is set in stone like the graphic card market. For a graphics card to be DirectX compliant, it must have full support of the API. Lowly Intel integrated graphic chips are compliant, but your average Realtek HD Audio chip has no standard to conform to. Is this what PC audio needs? If not, is PC audio is fine as it is?

Nun muß ich leider eine Urheberrechtsverletzung begehen, man möge mir verzeihen, aber ich will unbedingt meine Leser daran teilhaben lassen und habe keine Lust, hier Nacherzählungen zu schreiben.

Als wir in der aktuellen “PC Games” diese Kolumne gelesen haben, haben wir lauthals Tränen gelacht. Wirklich JEDES Wort stimmt, aber auch wirklich jedes, besser könnte ich’s nicht beschreiben. Genau so ist es mit dem Surround Sound, zumal das bei Blu-rays noch viel extremer ist, und die Kettensäge beim ein oder anderen Videogame hier ja auch desöfteren zum Einsatz kommt.

Zum Glück sind unsere Nachbarn wohl mittlerweile alle schwerhörig.

Empiezan a presentarse las ofertas televisivas para la liga de futbol de la temporada 2009-2010, el Grupo Prisa ha presentado su nueva oferta para los aficionados del futbol, esta nueva formula parece más atractiva para el gran publico, y se basa en los éxitos de audiencia que daban los partidos de las 20:00 los sabados  y las 19:00 los domingos.

Sogecable lanza un nuevo canal con la Liga de fútbol más emocionante. Canal+ Liga, que nace con el comienzo del campeonato, ofrecerá cada jornada dos partidos de la Liga, de los cuales uno será siempre el que dispute el Real Madrid o el Barcelona, los dos clubes con más tirón.

Canal + Liga ofrecerá cada fin de semana dos partidos de Primera (sábado a las 20.00 horas y domingo a las 19.00) y dos partidos de Segunda División (sábado 18.00 y domingo a las 17.00). También ofrecerá partidos de la Copa del Rey y de la UEFA Europa League.

Canal+ seguirá con su partido en exclusiva de los domingos a las 21.00 y el mejor encuentro de Segunda División a las 12.00. También emitirá en exclusiva el mejor partido de cada jornada de la Copa del Rey (excepto la final que debe ir en abierto). Este canal sólo estará disponible en la plataforma Digital +.

Junto al partido en abierto de cada jornada, los espectadores de la plataforma podrán ver dos encuentros de Primera y dos de Segunda en Canal+ Liga, el histórico partido de los domingos en Canal+ (21.00 horas), el mejor encuentro de Segunda (12.00) y el resto de los choques ligueros que se ofrezcan en el sistema de pago por visión. Canal+ Liga contará con un experimentado equipo de deportes, entre los que figuran Carlos Martínez, Michael Robinson, Nacho Aranda, Noemí de Miguel, Gaby Ruiz, Maldini, Juanma Castaño, Manu Sarabia, Santi Cañizares, Rafa Alkorta y Chapi Ferrer. Y detrás de las cámaras, Victor Santamaría continuará al frente de la realización.

Además, los partidos más importantes de cada jornada se podrán ver en alta definición, una tecnología que actualmente sólo ofrece Digital+. Para acceder a estas señales es necesario disponer de una televisión Full HD o HD Ready y de un iPlus, el terminal de nueva generación de Sogecable. iPlus está dotado con un disco duro de 160 GB que permite grabar y reproducir en cualquier momento más de 80 horas de programación de forma muy sencilla. Además, integra un sintonizador de TDT, incorpora sonido Dolby Digital y cuenta con un mando único para navegar entre los canales digitales y analógicos.

Por fin Sogecable lanza una oferta atractiva para el gran publico, en el que combinan diferentes posibilidades todas ellas muy interesantes, me parece muy bien que aprovechen la fuerza de los partidos de los domingos que tanto éxito le reportaron a La Sexta. Esta claro que existía un inmovilismo en esta compañia, que realmente  ha afectado a sus cuentas, lo que tienen estos periodos de crisis es que o se reacciona o se desaparece. 

I’ve heard the term “sonic tapestry” used before to describe songs that have complicated melodies and an amalgamation of instruments and sounds. I, personally, use it to describe songs I can listen to on my laptop and feel like I have my very own Dolby Digital Surround Sound (and perhaps a live-action version of Fantasia). This song, coupled with 73-degree weather and my drive home from work, wove a sonic tapestry that made my day a fair bit better:

Pasiunea pe care o am asupra acestor filme rare-mi omoara furnicaturile extremitatilor si parca ma mai trezeste din ameteala,determinandu-ma sa ma zvarcolesc precum un criminal pe scaunul electric,plus spume la gura.
Oripilat,observ o gaura-n continua dispersie in spatele monitorului.Vad,incremenit,cum grupuri de opt picioare ies vertiginos si se-ntind,impinsi parca, de o forta nevazuta pe peretele crapat de vreme.Ma privesc.Se-ndreapt-acum vertiginos spre mine.Se suie pe calendar,coborand apoi spre pixuri,urcand pe cartea de langa mine..ajung pe tastatura..Timpul parca se dilata dintr-odata.Vad in fata ochilor o teama de care am vrut mereu sa scap,de-a lungul acestor ani.Nu-i invinovatesc,dar nu stiu ce doresc.De ce eu?De ce acum?Ce-mi fac?

Si vad ca filmul mult asteptat incepe!Dar ridic cutitul de macelarie si..

So I was watching Casino Royale on TV while eating dinner tonight after getting home from the follow-up meeting. Durring the commercials, I saw a Samsung commercial that got me all excited. It was for their new LED-TV. Like the one we saw at Dolby Digital. Awesome. The ad didn’t say how much it costed though, which probably means it’s expensive. It was really cool looking though, it was a lot slimmer than the prototype Dolby had and the case was shiny and red. Yeah, it looked sweet. The commercial was cool too. It was this alien looking humming bird flying around some flowers, but everthing had glowy things like deap sea fish have coming out every which way. It was kinda trippy and bright, but I guess the commercial would have to be in order to convey the sharper images and depper blacks on TVs that can’t actually reproduce them.

Moderne Videogames bieten schon seit Jahren eine anständige Surround-Kulisse … da pfeifen die Wägelchen an einem vorbei an denen man in Burnout vorbeischiesst, im Rollenspiel erscheint in der Trollhöhle jeder Schritt an den Wänden zu widerhallen und im Egoshooter verrät jede Kugel genau aus welcher Richtung sie kam und wo sie aufschlägt. Zumindest in der Theorie sollte es so sein – seit gestern bin ich wieder von Stereo auf Surroundsound an der Konsole umgestiegen und bei Call of Duty 4 trifft das ganze nicht ganz zu. Zum einen scheint die Positionierung nicht perfekt zu sein, aber vor allem fällt mir der stumme Centerspeaker auf. Einige Gesprächsfetzen kommen zwar über den Center, aber nichtmal eine direkt in eine Wand vor einem geschossene Patrone lässt die Membranen zucken. Alles wird nur über die Lautsprecher links und rechts ausgegeben. Was soll das darstellen ? Eine Art Dolby Digital im Sparmodus ?

Aufgefallen ist es zuerst einem Kumpel als er vor kurzem auf Surround umgestiegen ist – ich hatte noch die Hoffnung es läge am Verstärker. Sehr enttäuschend muss ich sagen – dabei rockt die allgemeine Soundkulisse bei CoD4 wirklich, besonders Explosionen können viel Spass bringen. Schade – die Zeit um auf einen Patch zu hoffen ist wohl auch schon vorbei.

Gone In Sixty Seconds

Söndag kväll och inget att göra, med andra ord perfekt för en liten hederlig “gammal” klassiker kanske? Gammal är självklart att överdriva eg, men millenieskiftet är snart 10år sedan och filmen har väl kanske inte hållt sig allt för väl. Självklart är orginalet att föredra, men nu var det så att just denna versionen av filmen har jag inte sett fastän jag har haft den i hyllan bra länge. Idag blev det äntligen dags för lite hederlig popcorn action ala Bruckheimer. Fast i vårt fall blev det ostbågar och chips istället.

V8 = Extra nice med subwoofer

Den här filmen såg jag dock inte hemma, utan jag var hos en kompis och passade på att provlyssna lite på hans nya surroundpaket som han nyligen köpt sig, för visst är det så att film skall ses med bra ljud och bra bild. 40″ Plasma & 5.1 Dolby Digital ljud funkar fint för mig även om det numera inte är något märkvärdigt eg. Har själv 40″ LCD & 7.1 (dock enbart 5.1 för tillfället) system med DTS bla. Men som sagt, nu var vi inte hemma hos mig och såg på filmen. Hurpass viktigt är detta eg med bild och ljud för er? För mig personligen så är det kul om det finns bra saker självklart, men det kostar ju därefter med. Den dagen vi flyttar kommer jag försöka få tag på en ny projektor igen, har en idag men att byta lampa på den kostar 4500kr och det är det inte värt. Dessutom har vi inte plats för det heller. Men som sagt, den dagen det blir flytt så är detta prio 1 för mig.

Det är något speciellt med bilfilmer

Hela den här genren tilltalar mig, kanske är det för att man är uppväxt i en famlij där fordon har varit en stor del av vardagen? Min far har haft allt från Mustang Mach-1, Pontiac Trans-Am till nyare saker som tex hans motorcykel med v8 motor (BossHoss) och är väl detta som ligger bakom mitt intresse för snabba bilar och stora motorer. Ni kan ju gissa om det var en som blev glad när han fick orginalfilmen av mig för något år sedan efter ha gått och pratat om hur gärna han velat se den pga av “Ellinor”, mustangen Halicki rullar runt med. Har även gett han klassikern “Bullitt” med Steve McQueen och skall försöka få tag på “Vanishing Point” till han också. Oavsett, alla dessa gamla filmer är de man skall se, visserligen håller de lite ojämn kvalité jämfört med många av dagens filmer, men det är helt klart något speciellt med en film med RIKTIGA biljakter och inget data-animerat tjafs.

Bruckheimers Gone in Sixty

Filmen är producerad som sagt av popcorn-action-film legenden Jerry Bruckheimer och även om nu inte Michael Bay står för regin i denna filmen så gör Dominic Sena (Kalifornia & Swordfish bla.) ändå ett fullvärdigt jobb. Visst, den har ingen som helst känsla för autentism mer än bilarna de åker runt i. Ja, de kan göra otroliga hopp, och ja de går förvånandsvärdt snabbt ibland, men det är helt ok. Man ser inte en film gjord av Bruckheimer och förväntar sig detta, man förväntar sig action från ruta 1 och töntiga repliker och det är precis vad denna filmen är.  Filmen var en riktig Blockbuster när den kom 2000 och är späckad med stora Hollywood namn, stora som små. Nicholas Cage & Bruckheimer har gjort en del filmer ihop som alla håller liknande klass, Con Air, The Rock (Bästa filmen av dessa), National Treasure serien. Bruckheimer vet vad han gör och som sagt filmen håller en relativt bra klass. Självklart är som sagt orginalet aningen vassare av någon anledning, men det har nog med att göra att man har växt upp med att sett den filmen några ggr.

Gone In Sixty Seconds: 5/10

Man ser inte denna filmen för den är “bra” utan mest för att se alla snygga bilar göra sig extra sexiga i ett smakfullt foto. En annan anledning är för att “lyssna” på filmen, ljudpålägget är helt ok om man nu vill höra lite skönt muller från uppvarvade v8 motorer. En klassisk “grabb-film” med andra ord. Nästa gång vi skall ha retro-kväll blir det ytterligare en Cage film, nämligen John Woo´s mästerverk “Face/Off”. (Morsans favoritfilm, för att hålla kvar på familjetemat dvs)

Superiority alone is never a sure bet for winning at any endeavor.  If it were, Starbucks would be bigger than Dunkin Donuts, the Yankees would be champions every year and DTS would be the surround sound standard, rather than Dolby Digital.  We’re willing to bet that few people reading here even know what DTS stands for, much less use it on any regular basis.

In today’s TV market, there’s a superior technology out there called plasma.  It invented its own category so thoroughly that lots of people say plasma for any flat TV, like Kleenex for a tissue.  It enjoyed happy years where there was little to no market competition.  Everyone loved and continues to love it.  Yet plasma already seems well on its way to joining the CD, FM radio and DV cassettes in the inexorable slide toward technology obsolescence.

Why?  Because LCD TVs are cheaper to produce and more profitable to sell than plasma; because the major manufacturers have already made huge investments in LCD plants, and because, well, that’s pretty much it.

Before we go any further, know that we have no intrinsic beef with LCD, the technology that’s pushing plasma out the door.  Well, that’s not exactly true, we really do wish big-screen LCD technology was better than it is.  We don’t like its finicky viewing angles; sit on one side of the room and the picture looks fine, sit on the other (or stand up) and it’s washed out.  We don’t like its inability to keep up with fast action like sports, which is why LCD manufacturers knock themselves silly with fixes like 120 Hz and now, even 240 Hz refresh rates.  Most of all, we don’t like that its color and black levels — the meat and potatoes of a good picture — still don’t equal those of plasma, much less CRT (remember those?), another obsolete technology that was, by the end of its life, better than either plasma or LCD for pure picture performance.

Actually, that does sound like a beef, if not a rant.  We apologize, but the apology would be more sincere if LCD TVs were simply better performers. Some of the best ones have gotten to be pretty good.  The worst ones (no names will be mentioned) make us nostalgic for analog. For most TV manufacturers, that’s not a good enough reason to stick with plasma, although several key makers have announced that they’ll do just that – at least for the present.

Panasonic is one of them, and they’re about to become the plasma kings by default.  Their plasma technology has always been very good, thanks to a talented engineering culture, economies of scale and some astute acquisitions early in the game. The company’s latest sets have been very good indeed, and now that Pioneer and its standard-setting Kuro sets are leaving the market, perhaps soon to be followed by Hitachi’s excellent plasma models, Panasonic will likely take the title of “best” TVs out there.

Samsung and LG both claim to be sticking with plasma, although LG was a bit coy before saying so publicly.  But one look at the names who’ve already left plasma for good tells you what time it is.  Sony, RCA and Toshiba may have been sourcing their plasma sets from other manufacturers, but at least they were in the game.  Now they’re not, and neither is Vizio, Fujitsu or JVC.  Even Sharp, the all-time LCD champs, once marketed a couple of plasma models.  Just don’t mention it to them now.

So is plasma still worth thinking about for a TV purchase?  Sure – in fact, it may well be your best purchase, if picture quality is your primary concern.

If it’s not, enjoy your LCD set.  At least until OLED and other superior display technologies become market friendly.

I just booted up my Xbox 360 this morning and unplugged it with the intention of moving it. However, Dolby Digital was still being transmitted in full 5.1 over HDMI. This didn’t work before and was presumably added in the recent dash update to solve these issues.

Wooo Hoooo! We got out of the house for a date and saw Coraline in 3-D! We even managed to drop off and pick up the family car for repairs on the same day!

The Dolby Digital 3-D was quite good.
