Mel plays a career bad guy who is caught in Mexico and thrown in a rough and tumble, protect all your sides prison… that is nothing like how you picture prison to be. He learns to survive from a very unusual source; the son of the woman he falls for while running from, well, just about everyone. It looks like it could be a return to pre-legal entanglement form for Mr. Gibson.

I miss Mel Gibson, when I say Mel Gibson, what I really mean Max Rockatansky and Martin Riggs. As a fan of his work I have always kind of hoped that his well published indiscretions are a symptom of his equally well published problems and not more deep-seated belief. How I Spent My Summer Vacation is his first movie playing his archetypical character for a long time, possibly since Payback (1999). This truly is a star vehicle, funded by Gibson, who produces and co wrote the movie. He also hand picked the director, Adrian Gruenberg (making his directorial debut) who had previously worked as assistant director on Apocalypto.

An American getaway driver (Mel Gibson) crashes into Mexico (literally) and is promptly arrested. In order to relive him of the proceeds of his crime (around $2million) the Mexican police dump him in an unusual jail. When he befriends a young boy with a unique value he is forced to think of more than just himself and his cash.

There is a scene towards the end of the movie where Gibson impersonates Clint Eastwood but long before that the film starts to resemble A Fistful of Dollars (1964)/Yojimbo (1961), I don’t think we ever learn what Gibson’s characters name is (from here on I will refer to him as Driver as he is credited on IMDB). The prison contains whole families and is run like a small town by a mob boss. There is even a wild west style shootout. Driver quickly learns who is in charge and what he needs to survive, all the time playing the angles to get out and get his money back. Although largely a likeable character Driver is at the end of the day a career criminal. Stealing from drug smuggling gangsters and helping others, he is given all the breaks when it comes to audience sympathy, not surprisingly when you consider Gibson is credited as both a writer and a producer.

Full of both the action and the dry whit you would expect from Martin Riggs, Gene Ryack and Porter, How I Spent My Summer Vacation is the story of man looking out for himself who finds a certain amount of redemption by thinking of others. Gibson’s own redemption can only be found in his personal life but attempting to get his career back on track and not disappearing to reclusive obscurity hints at a possible intention to do this. In the UK we get to see the movie on the big screen but in America it appears to have débuted on Video On Demand (under its original title Get the Gringo). This is a shame, while not a classic, it is good enough to deserve a theatrical release.

Shot in the noir style of the mid-twentieth century, Mexican director Iyeri Wertta’s The Black Panther is part classic black-and-white cinema, part sci-fi and part surreal pulp fantasy. After receiving a cryptic phone call, alcoholic gumshoe Nico Beamonte embarks on a mission from God to find the Black Panther. At the same time, he is being chased by La Muerte (Death); sultry and elegantly clad in black, she bids him to locate as well the cryogenically frozen Pedro Infante, iconic Mexican movie star and music idol of the 1950s.
As Beamonte begins his hunt, going on nothing but a name, it seems he’s not alone: jockeys, men in white suits, even an ex-lover are all undergoing the same search. Beamonte remembers the innocence of a youth spent wanting to become like Pedro Infante, the epitome of a great macho: he is brave loves women (who love him back) and revels in carousing and singing. But Beamonte doesn’t come close to resembling his role model. An aimless loser, he drinks all day; even God tells him his life is pointless since he hasn’t known love or had children.

Complicating matters further is El Gringo, who wants the Black Panther at any price—including that of his own daughter, who’s engaged in an affair with a lesbian Martian. Yes, even aliens from outer space get involved in the existential dilemma of the deadbeat detective as he questions his faith, his ideals and the meaning of life.

Directed by Rubén Ímaz, Cephalopod tells an existential tale of love and loss. Starring acclaimed Basque actor Unax Ugalde as Sebastián, the drama unfolds as the young Basque-Mexican painter travels from Spain to Mexico City in an attempt to connect with his roots and mourn the sudden death of his beloved. At first, he meanders aimlessly through the capital, partying with locals, sketching the giant squid with which his lost girlfriend was obsessed, and entering into a rebound relationship with a beautiful young woman (who also supplies him with cocaine). But even as he draws strength from their no-strings-attached union, his own obsession with the cephalopod grows, as it begins to represent what he must find in order to truly release his dearly departed girlfriend.

Moving onward to the edge of the Sonoran Desert, where the blazing white sand dunes meet the surf along the Sea of Cortez, Sebastián pushes himself to his own limits—crossing the arid peninsula to rid himself of his angst while carrying out his love’s wishes in his search for the elusive squid. This haunting meditation on grief and acceptance is a coproduction of Spanish company Irusoin and Mexico’s Canana, founded by Mexican superstars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna.

Natan, aged five, is the child of a Mexican fisherman, Jorge, and Italian-born Roberta, who have decided to part ways. But before Roberta takes Natan to live in Rome, she sends him off with his father for a summer of bonding. They head for Banco Chinchorro, a pristine coral reef, where Jorge builds a palafite on stilts for them and their grandfatherly companion to settle into a life of rustic simplicity. The days pass in hushed, steady rhythms as they fish, swim and play together.

Defying categorization as either narrative or documentary, To the Sea beautifully blurs the lines between fact and fiction. Although some moments are scripted, director Pedro González-Rubio’s subjects are real people; in voiceovers, Jorge and Roberta tell the story of their beachside romance and its demise. The soulful, subtle joys shared by father and son as the latter learns nuanced life lessons from the natural world are real too. The film is a spare, sweet look at the bond between parent and child and a poignant meditation on the meaning of home: despite the heartbreaking separation that lies ahead, we know that Jorge is giving Natan the invaluable parting gift of knowing where he came from and who he is. Via that knowledge, González-Rubio articulates a sense of peace and unadorned stillness that has a lasting resonance.

The old cliché about a hard-working dad who brings home the bacon gets a disturbing new twist in Mexican director Jorge Michel Grau’s slow boil of a first feature.
It begins with the death of an older, nondescript gentleman in a busy public walkway; after cleaning up his blood and removing his body, the police are in no rush to identify him in a city of anonymous millions. By the family he has left behind, however, he is desperately missed: three teenagers and a loyal wife have suddenly been sent into a tailspin. As we soon learn, this quartet lives by a set of very strict, cannibalistic rites that not only guide their daily activities but nourish them as well—and Papa was the only one who had mastered the rituals of hunting and preparation that must now be performed by the oldest child, Alfredo. His grieving mother and younger brother Julian—sociopathic even by the standards of this clan—initially object. But their survival depends on Alfredo’s ability to pull himself up his bootstraps, head out into Mexico City’s bustling streets and make the most of his dark inheritance.
With creepily quiet performances by the leads (including Paulina Gaitan of Sin Nombre, who plays daughter Sabina), Grau’s debut simmers with dread and fear as it reaches its shockingly visceral climax.

We have heard of the fence between Mexico and the United States, but it’s still hard to picture fully what it’s like. El viaje de Teo, which screened at Cornerhouse on Sunday lunchtime in their Spanish language film festival, showed us the reality of this insane situation.

Teo is a young Mexican boy whose father has just got out of jail, and together they attempt to cross the US border with a group of other desperate people. Teo barely knows him, but shows a lot of solidarity towards this unknown man when things go wrong.

Eventually, finding himself on his own, Teo tries to find his father with the unlikely help of a boy not much older than himself, and they get to see firsthand the bad side of this people trafficking. Tenacity and courage get them a long way. There is a lot of unexpected and unselfish help from people on the way, and also nasty cruelty.

Life isn’t perfect, and thankfully the film doesn’t make this a sweet little story that ends happily on all counts. But it’s uplifting. And at times it’s funny, like the chilli eating episode.

This was yet another almost full screening. It’s good to see the interest there is in films from other countries.

Quizás el mejor favor que se le pueda hacer al cine mexicano de hoy en día es lo que Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu y Guillermo del Toro están haciendo con Cha Cha Chá, la productora que quiere distribuir lo mejor de México en el mercado internacional, sobre todo el norteamericano. Y el estreno de esta semana, Rudo y Cursi, es la primera horneada de los charros que mucho han dado que hablar a nivel mundial, tanto así como la pareja protagónica conformada por Diego Luna y Gael García Bernal. Pero bueno, a lo nuestro.

Rudo y Cursi, película escrita y dirigida por Carlos Cuarón (hermano de Alfonso), narra el auge y caída de los hermanos Beto y Tato Verdugo, jóvenes temporeros del Estado de Jalisco, que viven en base a sus sueños. Beto (Diego Luna) quiere ser futbolista profesional, mientras que Tato (Gael García Bernal) anhela ser cantante de música norteña. Lamentablemente, la vida de ambos transcurre de la plantación a las canchas de barrio y la vida en su numerosa familia.

En el transcurso de un lado a otro es que aparece Batuta (Guillermo Francella) un caza talentos argentino que decide darles la oportunidad de sus vidas. Pero como todos sabemos, el camino para ser futbolista profesional está minado por múltiples tentaciones de las cuales pocos saben sortear. Es así como Beto “Rudo” y Tato “Cursi”, como se les conocerá una vez alcancen la fama, van probando los manjares de una nueva vida de ensueño, donde el buen desempeño es mimado con dinero, fama y mujeres; mientras que la sequía deportiva conlleva al más infame de los olvidos.

La película está muy bien armada, Cuarón mantiene el hilo de ambos personajes gracias al relato omnipresente de Batuta que constantemente nos va aleccionando de los ires y devenires del oficio de la pelote y sus constantes analogías con la vida misma. Y el trío que conforma la odisea de los personajes ya en el DF logra consolidar la narrativa de Rudo y Cursi, y si bien la obra es netamente un drama de esos que abundan en nuestras tierras, el humor con el que se adereza, mantiene al espectador espectante de las aventuras de los hermanitos.

Quizás el punto débil para nosotros sea el peculiar acento de los personajes que a duras penas se les entiende. No obstante, las actuaciones son un siete a lo largo de la historia. Francella está soberbio en su personaje, demostrando una vez más su maestría en el oficio; Gael García Bernal mantiene su personaje sin mayores aspavientos; pero Diego Luna demuestra el porqué está siendo considerado por las grandes producciones (hay que admirar su breve trabajo en Milk).

Un manual para el aspirante a futbolista profesional en clave cinematográfica es Rudo y Cursi; una película bien armada y con muy buena factura, que basa su fuerte en las emociones de sus personajes, en sus deseos de prosperidad, pero faltos de atención y mucha ingenuidad. Una muestra del porqué son muchos los que caen en el olvido ingrato de la hinchada, del cómo las luces de gloria y  farándula nublan los sueños de aquellos chicos de barro. 

Consensus: Vantage Point has an interesting premise that is completely undermined by fractured storytelling and wooden performances.

You’d figure that with such a high powered cast and as unique a concept as a presidential assassination attempt seen from multiple perspectives that even novice director Pete Travis couldn’t fail … wishful thinking on that one.

However this film did win an award in 2008 … “Golden Trailer – Best Thriller” I’m not surprised at this, it was the trailer that prompted me to put this on my “must see eventually” list.

Eye Candy …. Her air time was every bit of three minutes. Then they killed her off! I’m patiently waiting to see her in the IMAX release later this year in the latest Star Trek film starring as Lt. Uhura. I’m not totally convinced that she has the legs to make me forget about Nichelle Nichols but I will approach it with an open mind.

Now my personal favorite which is one of two reasons why I finished this nonsense …. drum-roll please …..

Her time on camera was much shorter that Saldana’s if you can believe it. But because of the appreciation I have for her work I’m embedding this youtube tribute to her.

The other reason I finished this film is because I’m slightly OCD and I have to finish movies and films that I start regardless of whether or not I like it not.

Four weeks to release, Diego Luna and Carlos Cuarón and others from the cast and crew of Rudo y Cursi, backed by former professional footballers, won a match 4-2 against a team of professional commentators from Televisa Deportes. Played at the Estadio Azteca, the match was arranged to promote the 19 December premiere. Diario de Yucután and Vanguardia reported.

Last week, the promotional supplement to the film was released to the International Book Fair of Guadalajara. The “Rudo y Cursi: The Book” includes the usual excerpts from the script and photos from production, but more excitingly also contains writings from the director’s brother Alfonso Cuarón, playwright Sabina Berman, and footballer Felix Fernandez.

Dolores Heredia has also been taking part in promotions: La Jornada and Noticias feature interviews with the actress who plays the protagonists’ mother. “Playing the mother of two beggars was fun.” She described young actors Diego and Gael as both incredibly committed and responsible, and at the same time generous and friendly. Speaking to Jorge Caballero, she also elaborated on the sport industry’s underworld, which the film also delves into.

Lizardo Altagracia Medina of Informador caught up with the director and Diego Luna in Guadalajara and spoke about working on the film and who is the rudest and the most corny (Google translations, sorry). Yanet Aguilar Sosa also reported from the Guadalajara book fair for El Universal, where the promotional text received a press conference (Gael García Bernal video’ed in) moderated by el Ponchito. La Vanguardia (Spain) also reported, and cited the director’s complaint of a lack of interest in Mexcian national cinema. Laura Santos also reported for AP.

Sin embargo Andrea Nolli prodría integrarse a la historia, de la misma forma que ya lo hizo Regina Torné, en personajes que ya estaban definidos desde el inicio y aclaró qué no son cambios al vapor.

El hecho de haber elevado un porcentaje significativo de la audiencia, después de la “cama” de ¾ puntos de rating en un mes, convierte a la producción en un verdadero suceso, dado que los nichos de mercado son difíciles de recuperar en tiempo recórd, explican experto sen markentig.

Pond’s, marca importante de cremas y belleza dirigida a sectores medio y medio alto de la sociedad, líder en Latinoamérica, vuelve ahora después de haber patrocinado la primera gran Historia de Argos con la Nueva TV Azteca , Mirada de Mujer.

Deseo Prohibido, no extenderá sus transmisiones, salvo 10 capítulos más, esto explican por compromisos de la estrella del melodrama Ana Serradilla y por cumplimiento a sus seguidores.

Lucía termina con Sebastián

Sebastián se sorprende por el desalojo, Lucía lo cuestiona. David intenta convencer a Ana Luisa de divorciarse. Lucía reclama a Sebastian por no decir nada sobre el desalojo. Él explica el procedimiento legal. Braulio se va a los golpes contra Evaristo y los policías. Roberto reclama a Julián insinuar la posibilidad de una relación entre Ana Luisa y David. Lucía aclara a Sebastián que no lo quiere volver a ver.

Evaristo avisa a Julián las acciones de Sebastian. Juan Antonio dice a Mayté que Sebastián conoció a una mujer maravillosa. Roberto piensa en lo que le dijo Julián y cuestiona a Ana Luisa, luego intenta seducirla.

Matías entrega a Braulio el cheque por su casa que le dio Evaristo. Él lo rechaza. Sebastián llega al hotel y descubre la presencia de Mayté, quien se siente humillada. Juan Antonio avisa a su amigo que dijo a Mayté que conoció a otra chica. Lucía y su familia sufren por perder su casa.

Sebastián pregunta a su padre si sobornó a Evaristo.
Elena avisa a Ignacio está dispuesta a llevar la relación que él quiere. Sebastián avisa a Roberto que se cometió una injusticia con la gente del Edén. Aclara que hubo corrupción y reclama haber hecho tratos a sus espaldas, luego renuncia.

Sebastián ve a Ana Luisa y David besándose. Lucía llega a la ciudad e intenta convencerse de que va a recuperar el edén

Escenas qué lograron la media de 8 puntos.

La Telenovela “Deseo Prohibido” elevó el rating del “prime-time” de TV Azteca, tras la transmisión de una serie qué tuvo que ser cortada por decisiones empresariales y la repentina aparición de películas mexicanas, se logró una media de 2 a 4 puntos.

El Lunes el inció del melodrama corto de canal 13, protagonizado por Ana Serradilla y Aldemar Correa, ubicó al canal en un rating inicial de 8.6 (puntos de rating) qué tuvo una media de 6/7 puntos, lo qué implica una mejora en la audiencia, qué esperan sea cada vez más notoria, fuentes de la empresa , han resaltado qué la historia es sólo controlada por “Argos”, es decir Epigmenio y su equipo son quienes decidirán por dónde llevar la historia, trabajarán con absoluta libertad, cosa que no ocurrió en sus anteriores participaciones.

“Esa es una fortuna, gracias a que los escritores y a los directores que tenemos en ARGOS, son gente de prestigio. Además tenemos un sello que nos permite convocar con fortuna, como en esta ocasión con ‘Deseo prohibido’, que nos dio la oportunidad de conjuntar un elenco de experiencia y juventud.
