I am not a fan of dolphins.

They are the Christians of the sea.

They chase after sharks, push their beliefs and avoid caffeine.

I don’t trust them. A face that streamlined could only be designed for evil and sordid acts. Acts of evil. And sordidity (what do you mean ’sordidity’ isn’t a word? It clearly is. Well, it clearly should be).

How Rude!

But don’t take my word for it, here is a true story which illustrates the depths of the dolphins evil and his desire to destroy the very people who worship him the most (names changed because I can’t remember what they were)…

Shelley loved dolphins.

She loved dolphins big time. Her home sported hand sculptured dolphin candles, dolphin wind chimes, and a velour bedspread with a massive picture of a dolphin leaping out of the water in front of a sunset.

Shelley felt uncomfortable with the distance between herself and the mighty dolphin. So she decided to get on a boat and get amongst the action.

Shelley was in her element. She and her boyfriend were on a boat, in the midst of high frequency dolphin noise pollution- and it was marvellous. But it wasn’t enough for Shelley. She lay on the deck, fantasising of getting even closer to the dolphins. She sang a hauntingly haunting song, summoning the creatures from the deep.

Then her dream came true.

A 300 kg dolphin leapt out of the ocean, and into the boat.

Onto her.

You may laugh (I certainly did), but Shelley suffered massive internal injuries, and nearly died (I stopped laughing here). It was in hospital that her boyfriend looked at her bloodied, broken, dolphin-smashed body and though ‘this is the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with’.

Who wouldn’t? Clearly, she’s a catch.

They did get married, and sold their story to the Womans Weekly entitled ‘Dolphin Girl Gets Married.’

The article discussed her feelings towards the dolphin, stating she still loves them as much as ever; and detailed the wedding, which included a massive ICE SCULPTURE OF A DOLPHIN.

Am I the only one who finds this bizarre?

If I got hit by a truck, I would not have a truck-shaped ice sculpture at my wedding. And if I was forever referred to as ‘Truck Girl’, I would be offended.

You still like dolphins, do you? Hmmm? Dolphin girl? You still think they are beautiful, majestic, intelligent creatures? Maybe you should re-consider, because dolphins clearly DO NOT like you.

I would think twice before lying on a beach this summer, Dolphin Girl, or you may end up with a whale (the dolphins fat cousin) beaching itself on your head.

The moral of this story is that dolphins do not want to be worshipped. People like Shelley are ruining their rep, and they will do everything in their power to strike them down. They find stained glass window hangings in their image tacky and embarassing. Which gives them a few more points in my book.

But not enough for me to buy ‘dolphin friendly’ tuna.

Dolphin became the default file manager when KDE went to 4.0, so Kubuntu users already know what a g

Dolphin became the default file manager when KDE went to 4.0, so Kubuntu users already know what a great program it is (unless they preferred to stick with the previous default file manager, Konqueror). While Ubuntu’s desktop environment, Gnome, has certainly stepped up of late when it comes to visual effects, screenlets and the like, KDE has always been about “bells and whistles”. And while Gnome can end up looking pretty stunning, the same can’t be said about its default file manager, Nautilus, which is about as plain as they come.

Dolphin, on the other hand, has the little niceties one would expect of a KDE file manager, like animated folder icons, and a lot more. There is an easy to access zoom slider for thumbnails, and has some pretty unique “views”. You can customise it in ways you could only dream of in Nautilus or Thunar, like not only add extra panes, but also move them where you like, and resize them to your needs.

If you look at the above pic, you’ll see that you can add a Folders (“tree”) pane and put it above the Information pane on the right (you could put it under Places, of course, but why not save that for shortcuts). Also, you can add a Terminal to the bottom, so whatever folder you’re in, you can just type commands without having to open a terminal in each folder (or continually change paths).

The views are “Icons“ (like the same in Nautilus, but smaller, and just the icon, no preview), “Details“ (your standard row-by-row format with information next to each file), “Columns“ (starts off with 2 columns, and every sub-folder you click on opens another), “Preview“ (turns your icons into thumbnails, and folders will show previews of pics inside), and “Split“ (gives you 2 columns you can browse with).

When you are in “Split“ mode, you can look at the beginning and end of a large folder at the same time, or use the second column to browse another folder or drive. The “Columns“ mode offers another interesting and useful way of browsing, so you certainly have a few choices in ways to browse.

Some things to note are that with Dolphin, like other KDE file managers, the default is to treat a single-click as a double-click. This can confuse Gnome users, as even slowly clicking a file will open it. All you need to do to select a file is click the green + that appears in the top left corner when you hover your cursor, and it will select it. But if you’re selecting a file simply to know the filesize, like you would in Nautilus, then you don’t need to, as that information will appear in the status bar and the Information pane simply by hovering your cursor over the file.

Not only that, but if you are in “Icons“ view, hovering over picture files will show the preview in the Information pane. In “Preview“ mode, another nice feature is that when you hover your mouse cursor over a folder, its preview thumbnail will cycle through other pictures in the folder (which you can see in the second pic, as the selected folder looks different from the preview in the Information pane).

So there are some great reasons to try out Dolphin. There’s a lot more you can do to customise its interface, and if the single-click/double-click issue ends up annoying you, then don’t worry, you can change the setting to what you’re used to. You can change that and other default settings via Settings > Configure Dolphin.

While Dolphin needs certain KDE libraries, etc, to function, any such dependencies will be installed with the program into your Ubuntu/Gnome system. Mark it for installation in Synaptic, or enter in a terminal:

sudo apt-get install dolphin

After a much needed and quite luxuriously uneventful weekend, I woke up to a Monday Writer’s B

After a much needed and quite luxuriously uneventful weekend, I woke up to a Monday Writer’s Block. I don’t recall setting our Tivo to record that program.

In an effort to fulfill my promise to keep this blog fresh and sprouting with new ideas, I rewound the last 48 hours in my head looking for inspiration, and recited everything we DID NOT do:

- socialize

- play Bingo, Backgammon, Cranium, or Monopoly; not even Truth Or Dare

- go shark back riding

- stop global warming (instead we added to it with the multiple trips to local coffee shops)

- fly a monkey

- teach Cosmo to roll over, though he was so, so close

- get kidnapped by an Alien

- learn to speak Urdu, or Spanish (a tad more practical in Baja)

- buy a turkey, eat a turkey, nor visited Turkey

- make out with a dolphin

- solve a single math problem

- patch the four holes in our ceiling before the mice that I’m convinced live in the cracks of our building find out about the openings and decide to come visit

- climb Mount Everest, nor any other hill, not even a road hump.

None of that happened this past weekend.

Looking further for topics I could write about, I browsed through the thousands of photos we took over the last year and a half, to finally stop at the images of Jason’s nephews, Conor and Dylon, which I found highly inspiring… to procreate rather than to bluntly tap at a keyboard with two fingers.

It sounds like a whole lot of NOTHING. Let’s get one thing straight: an uneventful weekend does not mean a weekend free of events. (Wait, huh?) I did some squats around the coffee table during meal times in an attempt to tighten that rump. There was some folding and scrubbing going on as well as a whole lot of licking. Cosmo cleaned both of his front paws after a thorough and urgently needed bath (because what do the humans know about a good bath), while Jason licked his wounds after brutal couple of weeks at work.

One task I managed to complete was a Thanksgiving menu, and that was not a trivial accomplishment. I’m Polish, hence for me this holiday represents a day off, empty streets, and limited access to candy shops and movie theaters since everything closes early. Nonetheless, I wanted Jason to experience the same traditions he grew up with despite living away from his family – the turkey with stuffing and mashed potatoes with gravy, with a spoonful of cranberry sauce on a side and a wedge of pumpkin pie.

Therefore, I’ll be cooking up a storm and making him a Thanksgiving meal that will take him back the memory lane: pork loin with honey-mustard sauce and wrapped in bacon, mashed rutabaga with cauliflower and caramelized onions, blanched green beans with roasted garlic, and chocolate and orange brownie pie. I’ll be sure to snap a photo of each and every dish, and report back to you with recipes and about five extra pounds hung around my hips. I wish they would settle in my boobs instead. Sigh.

In the meantime, let’s keep it light and healthy. I’ll be BAHK with a fresh salad idea before the Turkey Bell rings.

The amount of wild animals caught or eaten each year is close to or possibly even exceeding the species’ maximum yield levels. One day, they’ll be driven to extinction due to human intervention. The extinction of these animals will cause us losing our rich biological system forever.
Amongst all the world efforts to protect out wild life, and particularly dolphins, a strange ritual

Amongst all the world efforts to protect out wild life, and particularly dolphins, a strange ritual is still being followed. And this results in the loss of life of many dolphins each year. This happens in, according to Forbes survey from 2006-2008 the happiest place in the world, and the second most peaceful country in the world as per the global peace index, Denmark!!

This happens because a youth entering in to adulthood has to prove his manhood. How about these youth trying to create a breeding ground for dolphins for a change, just to prove their manhood, and their love towards nature?

Such acts of barbarism have always been carried by mankind throughout the times. But these, during modern times where environmental protection is said to precede personal ambitions!!

A petition is being run through the internet, against the same act carried out in Japan. Animal lovers should sign the petition to do their bit in the protection of these human friendly creatures.

Hey all, With the introduction of Glory of the Empire you’ll meet some Monster NPC’s too

Hey all,

With the introduction of Glory of the Empire you’ll meet some Monster NPC’s too! Notice how some of them look like ancient extinct creatures!

Murloc
They are the legendary “Fish Men” old sailor would tell tales about. Don’t confuse them with mermaids, there’s nothing beautiful about these guys. Rumor has it that these are not creatures natural to the Earth, but actually visitors from the stars that got stuck on our planet. No matter what they are, you must be wary around these sly creatures.

Sand worm
The sand worms were once peaceful creatures that kept to themselves and lived far underground and out of sight, but after centuries of pollution these worms have mutated and become huge. They’ve started attacking people, so watch out!

Moa
These are rather fast moving flightless birds that have a powerful attack! One draw back to these animals is that once they get scared, they run away – and they run fast. Moa are known for not stopping for anything. So be on guard.

Frilled Lizard
This is a reptile native to Australia. It can take on larger animals due to its large fangs and quick attacks. Don’t let your guard down around these little guys.

Philippine Tarsier
The Philippine Tarsier is a tiny animal that usually hangs out in tropical areas. It’s one of the smallest primate animals on Earth. Don’t blow these little guys off just because of their size, when dozens of them descend on you in animalistic fury you’ll be dead in no time.

Bi-heads Snake
It’s a snake. They are dangerous. This one has two heads. Do the math.

Duck
Baby ducks waddle around all the time, and sometimes fall down storm drains. Please leave them alone. These cute baby ducks are soooo fluffy and innocent….

Dolphin
Dolphins are very smart and love to play! They get along with players just fine, but if you make them angry they have very, very sharp teeth.

Trilobite
Dont bite the trilobite, they have really hard shells. Trilobites live in the ocean and are quiet creatures of the depths. They move quickly through the water and can some times get as big as a horse!

Platypus
The platypus is a semi-aquatic mammal native to eastern Australia. They like building their nests near the water. It’s a bit weird looking but that’s no reason to ignore its poisonous claws.

I am looking forward to this new version very much! Have fun everyone!

Pilot whales are very social, and are often found in groups of 20 to 90 pods. They swim, breed and eat as a group. Some pilot whales show off and spy hop. They basically stick half of their bodies out of the water, vertically, almost like break dancing. Can you spy hop? Many animals spy hop, not just this big guy. Wolves all need to do this, so they can see their surroundings.

Pilot whales look like black dolphins with a white or light grey anchor-shaped patch on its bottom surface. They have rounded heads with a very small beak. The male’s head may protrude up to 4 inches over the lower jaw! Its body is long, allowing the whale to swim with ease, but very stocky and muscular.

Kulit lumba-lumba tersusun atas tiga lapisan.

Dead Dolphin Direct was climbed on 9th October 2009 by Nigel (seconded by james!). The route takes a direct line to the route climbed by Pete and James about 4 years ago. The original line climbed the overhanging corner up the slab and belayed from a ut key and mud bollard! The new line takes the impressive overhang following the obvious line of holds onto the slab above. The Slab was as impressively loose as the first ascent and Nigel did well to find a handful of throwaway placement to keep the rope running in a nice line!

Graded at HVS 5a the grading was given for the start which was a great boulder problem…. the HVS for the loose rock above. Nigel has his first tick and although not a 3 star classic a new route has been claimed.

well done Nigel

posta elettronica: KMail

chat: Kopete, Konversation

torrent: KTorrent

ufficio: OpenOffice.org

grafica: Gwenview (viewer), Gimp (editor), digiKam, showFoto

audio: Amarok

video: Kaffeine

navigazione file: Dolphin

Razvan mi-a sugerat acum ceva vreme sa incerc Dolphinul, free social-network. Astazi mi-am luat inima in dinti si m-am confruntat cu el.

Pasul 3: upload ftp pe serverul destinatie (linux, gazduire Aruba.it)

register_globals is On (warning, you should have this param in Off state, or your site will unsafe)
Please go to the
Dolphin Troubleshooter
and solve the problem.

0 — no permission
1 –x execute
2 -w- write
4 r—read

- Am rezolvat prin plasarea unui fisier php.ini, care contine linia register_globals off, in directoarele: root, admin, orca si ray.

With all its beaches, it will come as no surprise that water sports are high on the agenda. Bali is a surfer’s paradise, with the best surfing for experts in Uluwatu and Canggu and in Kuta for beginners. Scuba diving is another popular choice, as the water in Bali is warm all year long. The best diving spots are in the east in Amed and Tulamben where you can take PADI certified diving courses. You can also snorkel here, or head to the west to Menjangan (Deer) Island, which supposedly has the best variety of fish and coral.

Other water activities include white water rafting in Sayan, west of Ubud; kayaking on some of the quieter rivers and on Lake Tamblingan; canoeing at Lake Batur; and dolphin watching by sunset in Lovina in the north.

In Nusa Dua, Sanur and other coastal resorts, wind surfing, parasailing, jet skiing, and other water related fun such as banana boat, flying fish, etc. can be found in abundance.

Hiking through the rice paddies is a good way to explore the inland and small villages of Bali. And so is mountain biking. Bike-Baik or Banyantree tours organize downhill cycling tours with visits to farms and plantations. Both activities can take you up the volcanoes, which are definitely worth a visit, and overall not too strenuous.

If you decide to stay in a resort, you can make use of the golf courses, tennis courts and swimming pools. You can also go fishing, bungee jumping, or sailing to one of the smaller nearby islands. If you go sailing, you can either rent a luxury yacht for the day, or hire a local perahu for an hour or so.

Not being an athletic person myself, I have undoubtedly missed a few sports, but we did go parasailing in Sanur, which was great fun.

for G

when you whisper in my other ear
and the ocean’s roar is all I hear,
I’m afraid
you may just be enough

when your undertow destroys me
so effortlessly
I’m afraid
it’s too late to call this off

and when your silver tendrils
lock around my helm
and port and starboard
and everything in between
glitter fingers
rainbow kisses
and kelp-heavy treasure chests spilling
Wonder Wheel wishes,

I’m afraid
we may just be making history—
and knowing the moment while making it is such luxury
even if all that matters
tonight
is that
I am happy

I told you that sometimes
memories take time to rise,
so you took my hand,
led me out on the sand
and we just walked along the tide

oh it’s strange,
this art of making waves—
how conscious and divine,
to feel my cells shifting
to welcome your drifting
from the country of yours
to the island of mine

and when the horizon lights
disappear and salt spray battens
your picture windows, I’m still here—
I am the sand you’ll write your name on with your toes
and the ocean who swallows you whole.
You are the dolphin with secret teeth,
belly upturned at low tide
who flips, presenting dorsal fin. I ride. you.
Who knows—in a thousand years
when you put your ear to a shell
you may still remember me
the day I fell
asleep by your side
under tiny blue lights
in your moon-quilted ashram by the sea.

Phew ! Got excused from night duty today and that allowed to curl up a bit in front of the TV to watch some good ol’ Discovery. Man, I think the next three posts will probably be about Discovery only (Vh1 is really beginning to suck or I’m getting old, whatever). Anyways, saw this AMAZING show on the Sardine Run.

Sardine Run is the path followed by huge shoals of sardine (around May-July, 2009 during their spawning season) along the coast of South Africa from the south of well, South Africa along it’s east coast. This sets the scene for a huge feeding frenzy since sardines are the preferred food of choice for a variety of dolphins, whales, sharks and even birds such as Cape Gannets.

Besides just the awe-inspiring photography from the BBC Discovery team (My god ! The underwater scenes are just beyond sexy; the actual feeding frenzy as the narrator mentions is a “beautiful but macabre ballet”), it’s also a mind-blowing macabre dance between the predators and the meal, as well as among the sardines themselves. The synchronization among the sardines itself is incredible, as if they were parts of a much larger organism. Especially, when the dolphines in their attempts to manage to section off a part of the shoal into “bait balls”(Around 1:14 into the video below) and they take a run through it, the way that the sardines move away is a masterpiece in movement. Jesus, managed to get hold of one part of the video below:

I also loved the part where they show the gannets torpedo through the surface of the water and grab these sardines. It’s remarkable how these birds can dive upto 30 feet based on just the velocity of the dive and then literally swim another 30 feet to grab the sardine. Especially the dive ( Check that out around 3:17) where they literally fold their wings to reduce the drag as they hit the water. They’re like missiles man ! Crazy !

I also loved another part of the first video, where the narrator mentions “The predators ignore each other. Here there is only one victim” which doesn’t really make animals any different from humans.

I love the Discovery channel.
