ใช้ Linux ตระกูลต่าง ๆ แล้วก็พวกตระกูล *BSD เพราะส่วนใหญ่สามารถหามาใช้ได้ฟรี
ไม่ต้องเสียค่าลิขสิทธิ์ ส่วนที่เป็น Windows ก็จะนิยมใช้ Windows 2000 สำหรับในบ้านเรา
โฮสติ้ง ที่เป็น *BSD มีอยู่น้อยมาก ส่วนใหญ่มาใช้ในเว็บส่วนตัวไม่นิยมทำ hosting ให้เช่า

แล้วตกลงถ้าใช้ Perl, PHP เขียนเว็บล่ะ เลือกอะไรดี ?
- ตามความคิดเห็นของผมนะครับ ถ้าคุณใช้ Perl, PHP หรือยิ่งถ้าใช้
MySQL เป็นฐานข้อมูล ผมแนะนำว่าบน Linux จะทำงานได้ดีครับ
แต่ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับปัจจัยอื่น ๆ อีกนั่นแหละครับ เช่น web hosting ของคุณทำการจูนดีเพียงใด
โปรแกรมที่คุณเขียน เขียนดีเพียงใด อันนี้ก็มีผลครับ ไม่ใช่ว่า OS เป็น Linux
แล้วจะต้องใช้ Perl, PHP, MySQL ได้ดีกว่าบน Windows เสมอไปครับ..

อันนี้เป็นเรื่องของ OS ในการเลือก host hosting แต่เราจะดูแค่นี้ไม่ได้ครับ ต้องดูปัจจัย เช่า โฮส อื่น ๆ

มีปัญหาเกิดขึ้นได้ เช่นช้าลง ล่มบ้าง ติด ๆ ดับ ๆ อะไรแบบนี้

ถ้าเลือกได้ผมอยากให้เปรียบเทียบกันหลาย ๆ ที่ในเรื่องของเสปคเครื่อง server
แต่ไม่ใช่ว่าเสปคสูงกว่า host แรง กว่าเสมอไป ก็ขึ้นอยู่กับจำนวนลูกค้าที่มีบนเครื่องนั้นด้วย
ขึ้นอยู่กับ service ที่เปิดให้บริการ ขึ้นอยู่กับ Sys Admin ในการจูนเครื่อง
ขึ้นอยู่กับความเข้ากันได้ของ hardware และ software ฯลฯ

2. Bandwidth และ Data Transfer ที่อนุญาตให้เราใช้งาน
ตรงส่วนนี้ก็สำคัญ ถ้าเว็บของคุณเป็นที่นิยม วันนึงมีผู้เข้าชมมาก ๆ
ส่วนใหญ่พวก – hosting ถูก  – ที่เปิดให้เช่า hosting จะบอกว่า unlimited แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้ว
ถ้าคุณใช้เยอะเกินไป เขาจะค่อย ๆ บีบคุณออกจากเขาได้.. ทางที่ดีก่อนตกลง เช่า host ราคาถูก ควรจะสอบถามตรงส่วนนี้ให้ละเอียดรอบคอบก่อน.. ถ้าเขาจะบีบเรา เราจะได้บอกได้ว่า
ก็ตอนที่ตกลงกัน มัน unlimited นี่นา..

3. สถานที่ตั้งเครื่อง server เช่าโฮสติ้งที่ให้บริการ โฮสติ้ง ว่ามีความปลอดภัย ความน่าเชื่อถือเพียงใด thai hostingหรือเมืองนอกอันนี้ถ้าลูกค้าที่จะเข้าเว็บเราส่วนใหญ่เป็นคนไทย ก็เลือก web hosting ที่ควรเลือก

ซึ่งในเรื่องของความปลอดภัย ความน่าเชื่อถือ เท่าที่ผมเคยไปสัมผัสมาหลาย ๆ ที่
ส่วนใหญ่ก็จะอยู่ในมาตรฐานเดียวกัน ไม่ต้องเป็นห่วงในส่วนนี้มาก..

4. ความน่าเชื่อถือของบริษัทที่เปิดให้เช่า โฮสติ้ง การ support ลูกค้า
ตรงนี้เป็นส่วนสำคัญสุดในการเลือกเช่า hosting เพราะว่ามีบทเรียนให้เห็นอยู่
คือบางบริษัท host ถูกๆ - เช่าhostถูกๆ  - โฮสติ้งราคาถูก อยู่ ๆ ก็ปิดตัวเองลงไป ลูกค้าที่ไปเช่า โฮสติ้ง ก็เดือดร้อน
เสียหายต่องาน ต่อธุรกิจที่ทำอยู่เป็นอย่างมาก.. แล้วเราจะเลือกอย่างไรดี ?
อันนี้พูดยากมากเพราะแค่เราเห็นเพียงโฆษณาบนเว็บไซต์ เว็บไซต์ทำสวยดูดี
แล้วจะน่าเชื่อถือ อันนี้ไม่ใช่แน่ ๆ ครับ เราต้องดูว่าบริษัทนี้เปิดมานานหรือยัง
มีลูกค้ากลุ่มไหนอยู่บ้าง มีที่ตั้งที่แน่นอน มีเบอร์โทรศัพท์ที่สามารถติดต่อได้ทันที
มีประสบการณ์ในการให้บริการทางด้านนี้มากน้อยเพียงใด ไม่ใช่อยู่ ๆ มีเงิน
มาซื้อเครื่อง server แล้วเปิดให้เช่า เช่า host เลย ตรงส่วนนี้ถ้าเป็นผม
ผมจะดูประสบการณ์ของคนดูแลเครื่อง server ที่เป็น web hosting ก่อน
เพราะเวลามีปัญหา เราจะได้เชื่อมั่นว่า เขาสามารถแก้ไขปัญหาต่าง ๆ ได้
ไม่ทำให้ธุรกิจของเราต้องหยุด หรือต้องเสียหายไปด้วย..

5. พื้นที่และ ค่าเช่า hosting ที่เราจะได้รับ
hosting ราคา แล้วแต่เราแล้วครับ ว่าเราต้องการพื้นที่ เช่า hostingมาก น้อยเพียงใด ระดับราคา
ตรงนี้จะแตกต่างกันในแต่ละที่เป็นผลมากจากเรื่องของความน่าเชื่อถือในข้อที่ 4

ที่บอกว่า “เช่า host ราคาถูก ของดี ราคาถูก web hosting ถูก - host thai ถูก เชื่อผมเถอะ เพราะว่าเขาก็ต้องลงทุนเหมือนกัน ถ้ายิ่งเขาใช้เครื่อง server ดี ๆ ให้บริการดี ๆ ต้นทุนเขาก็ย่อมสูง จะมาให้บริการ
hosting ราคาถูก ก็คงอยู่ไม่ได้เหมือนกันครับ..

ที่ผมเขียนมาให้อ่านก็เป็นเพียงส่วนหนึ่งในการตัดสินใจเลือก โฮสติ้ง เท่านั้นครับ
แต่ก็น่าจะครอบคลุมพอสมควรแล้ว ยังมีปัจจัยอื่น ๆ อีกที่อยู่ที่ตัวคุณเองด้วย..

There is an interesting situation brewing in New Jersey.  An established law firm in NJ called Levinson Axelrod LLC (levinsonaxelrod.com) employed a lawyer by the name Edward Heyburn.  Edward didn’t like his job.  According to his website he didn’t like the people he worked for, either.  So once he was fired, he set up a website: levinsonaxelrod.net.  On this website Mr. Heyburn is griping about his former employer in a way that has attracted national attention.  According to a NJ.com article:

He said he launched his website . . . because “(the firm’s partners) have such an elitist attitude . . . .  I thought this was a very nice way to pull them out of the clouds,” Heyburn said.

But what interests me is the trademark and domain name issue behind it.  Is this cybersquatting? Is the company name ‘Levinson Axelrod’ a trademark?

First lets see if this is cybersquatting.  According to the Federal Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (15 U.S.C. § 1125 (d)) (paraphrased) a person shall be liable in a civil action by the owner of a mark if that person has a bad faith intent to profit from that mark, including a personal name which is protected as a mark under this section; and registers, traffics in, or uses a domain name that:

• in the case of a mark that is distinctive at the time of registration of the domain name, is identical or confusingly similar to that mark;
• in the case of a famous mark that is famous at the time of registration of the domain name, is identical or confusingly similar to that mark; or
• is a trademark

So, my guess is (and I haven’t read any case law and I’m a law student and not a lawyer) that since Mr. Heyburn isn’t intending to profiting from his use of the .net domain name he probably won’t be liable for cybersquatting.  He’s just in it for the pleasure of ripping his old bosses.  Does he have bad faith?  Certainly.  According to the above cited statute the cybersquatter must intend to “divert consumers from the mark owner’s online location to a site accessible under the domain name that could harm the goodwill represented by the mark, either for commercial gain or with the intent to tarnish or disparage the mark, by creating a likelihood of confusion as to the source, sponsorship, affiliation, or endorsement of the site.”

Well, is ‘Levinson Axelrod’ a trademark?  I went browsing for the federal trademark law and pulled Trademark Law from the US Patent and Trademark Office.  That is a big document that I’m gonna have to tackle another time.  My guess is that Levinson Axelrod is a trademark, but its past midnight and I’m delirious.  Cheers.

A strong web presence is key to communicating information about your organization. You want information on the web about your organization, but more importantly you want people to be able to find that information.

Domain names are becoming harder to find.  Unless you have an unusual business name, it’s quite possible that you may not be able to register your first choice or exact name of your organization.

Web sites are developed and optimized using key words and key phrases, and having some of these in your domain name could help with your search engine rankings. Below are a few tips to help you choose a domain name.

Keep It Simple
Your domain name should be catchy and easy to remember. Hyphens, numbers and unusual spellings are not recommended (unless it’s part of your organizations name). Something that is easy to spell and easy to remember will work best, otherwise when your audience searches for your organization, they may stumble upon another company.  

Make It Part of Your Identity
Do you have a catchy marketing phrase, slogan or tag line? You may want to consider using it as your domain name. But be sure to follow the above advice and keep it short and simple, something your audience will easily remember. A word of caution: headlines and calls-to-action from marketing campaigns aren’t always a good idea. They can be directed to the same place, but that way you are covering all bases and another business won’t be able to use your domain.

My last post described some of my reasons for ungeeking. The more I reflected on it, the more reasons I could come up with. Rationalizing? Perhaps, but the ungeeking proceeds nonetheless. One more reason that I did want to add is that when I am asked (or explain without provocation – that happens a lot) how a teacher can get involved in this bloggy-wiki-ey-twittery melange that is the habitat of the networked teacher (see picture below), I describe how blogs and wikis and twitter accounts can be set up for free. This elicits gasps of jubilation tinged with disbelief. Any teacher can stake their claim on a few megabytes of the intarweb-tubes for absolutely no cost, with the added bonus of someone else doing all the hosting and maintaining. And for a very minor cost, they can have it all given their imprimatur of their very own domain name. So I figure that if I’m going to tell people this, I’d better walk the walk.

Here’s my bare-bones guide to becoming master of your own personal-learning-networked-teacher.

1. Get a blog. I have mine set up at wordpress.com, but blogger is another option for well done free blogs. There may be other good options, but these are the ones I work with. I use my blogs as the centre of my online brain, both personally (that would be this blog) or profesionally (at the World of Wall). It is where my thoughts all come together. The lack of activity on this blog over the past couple of years should give you some insight into how many thoughts I’ve had during that time span.

2. Get a domain to use for your blog. I think this is important because you want to control your digital footprint. That is, when someone googles your name, your site should show up on the first page of results. If you are going to be online, make sure that you control that identity. My thinking right now is that it’s best if you can have a domain name that is obviously connected with you (like robwall.ca). I have had other domain names in the past – stigmergicweb.org, omegageek.net – but I’m confortable with this one because it is who I am. I like to think that whatever I put here is a true representation of who I am the rest of the time.

You can get a domain on your own through a hosting company like godaddy, or if you are linking a domain to a wordpress.com blog you can purchase the domain through them (for a limited set of top level domains – .com, .net and .org). WordPress.com has some good explanation of how to get started with domain mapping. I haven’t tried it but Blogger also has instructions for using a custom domain.

3. Get a twitter account Blogs are great for putting out and archiving information in a chronological order, but twitter is more like a live stream of what people are thinking (and eating for breakfast) right now. Laura Walker has put together a nice summary of why teachers should use twitter. David Weinberger once noted that the smartest person in the room is the room. I use twitter to be a part of that room. 4. Start a wiki (or many). My blog is a great archive for the ideas that have occurred to me or events that are important to know. My twitter account is a way to be “in the room”. My wikis are my repositories of knowledge that aren’t necessarily needed to be sequential. Sometimes I might assign a project through my blog, but the details of the assignment are given more fully on a wiki. I have created good, free wikis at wikispaces or pbworks. Wikispaces will create ad-free wikis, normally a premium (meaning “you  pay for it”) feature, for free for K-12 classroom use. You can also specify that a wiki will be for educational use if you create a pbworks wiki.

Once you have those 4 things done – created a blog, set up a domain name, get a twitter account and start a wiki – start linking them together. You can put your blog site in part of your profile on twitter. Put links to your blog and twitter accounts on your wiki(s). You can add twitter integration into your blog using various wikis. Integrate your online identity as much as possible.

As I’ve been writing this, I’ve thought of other things to do to become a networked teacher. Social bookmarking, RSS aggregators and portal sites like netvibes are also valuable tools. A problem with explaining these things to people is it ends up being like drinking water from a fire hose.
