For my newest necklace featuring one of my altered dominoes, I decided to pink up a minor color in the image on my domino, the light (baby) blue. The mulberry paper background is a peachy pink and the image contains a few other shades of pink. I decided to pull it all together with some beaded charms featuring both the peachy pink and the reddish pink.

I had a variety of vintage light blue buttons that I truly loved. Some are glass. Some are plastic. Some of the buttons have additional colors. A couple of the buttons have little crystal rhinestone that tie in well with the rhinestone on the pendant. I layered a couple of buttons and a bead on a couple of the buttons to make them extra special. I did wire-wrap most of the buttons so that I could easily attach the buttons with a jump ring.

If you look closely you’ll notice that I have 6 reddish pink drops that I’m using as charms on this necklace. The drops came from a set of earrings I found at an estate sale. I love the verdigris patina on the beadcaps of these little charms.

I decided on a double chain as the foundation of the necklace. I had quite a bit of very fine gold chain. I thought the elements were to large and heavy for a single chain, so I connected them to two layers of chain.

I decided to string some of those wonderful light blue glass beads that I acquired at an estate sale. I thought this necklace should look nice from the front or back. This is definitely a necklace for a updo or a short haircut. The necklace fits close the neck and is pretty all the way around.

It’s Domino Designer 7.x day! (November 22, 2009) That is, it’s Donahan Domino Designer

It’s Domino Designer 7.x day! (November 22, 2009) That is, it’s Donahan Domino Designer’s 7 year (or 49 in people years) birthday!!!!

Seven years ago, Bruce and I were considering a dog but were just not 100% sure what kind of dog we wanted or even if we were ready to commit to the responsibility of dog ownership. In Bruce’s quest to find the perfect dog, our friend Kelly told him that her mother bred English Springer Spaniels and that they were an excellent dog to own as a pet. We had no clue what an English Springer Spaniel was, but Kelly insured Bruce that he would fall in love with them. To get Bruce familiarized with the breed, Kelly’s mom brought over their four dogs (Delta, Jeanie, Calvin and Duffy) for him to check out. Bruce never mentioned anything to me about seeing Kelly’s mother’s dogs nor going forward with any thing. So for a few months things slowed down and not much happened.

Then, a few months later, Bruce showed me some puppy pictures of the breed and asked me what I thought of the puppies. I thought they were cute, but I had my heart set on a yellow lab. He asked me if I would like a dog like that (an English Springer). I didn’t say “yes” or “no”…so I think he took it as a “maybe”. I am not sure when Bruce did this, but he went out to see the litter of puppies that Jeanie (Domino’s mom) just had. He instantly fell in love with Domino (Kaleb then). From that point forward, there was no turning back! We were now going to be the proud owners of a 8 week old black and white male English Springer Spaniel!

I remember vividly the day that Domino was brought home to us! He was so little! He had his first meal at our house, played with us for a while and then fell asleep.

The next item on the list was to name him. We were thinking something to do with him being black and white. Oreo was mentioned and some other names. but then I came across Domino and thought of the instant connection between black and white, domino the game piece and IBM’s Lotus Notes/Domino! What a perfect fit!!! It was a match made in heaven!! But now the chore was to put together a AKC name that included Domino. We thought long and hard on this but came up with a very clever name. With Domino’s mother’s AKC name, CH Donahan’s Designer Jeans CD, we came up with CH Donahan Domino Designer (playing on his mother’s AKC name as well as IBM’s Lotus Notes/Domino Designer name) Pretty neat, huh?

What would have been really neat is if back in 2002 (the year Domino – the dog) was born, that IBM Lotus Notes/Domino was in version 7, but alas, it wasn’t (it was in version 6.x) So, I guess we can’t say that Domino was born when Lotus Notes/Domino was in version 7.x!

So here we are 7 years later with a WONDERFUL pet who has brought us so much joy and laughter into our family! Domino now has a little sister (Bella) that he has to contend with every now and then, but I think he wouldn’t have it any other way! But that’s another story!

Thank you Domino, for bringing us all the joy and love into our family! We are excited to have MANY more years with you and creating unforgettable memories! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOY! You are the best Domino Designer that anyone could ever design! We love you so much!

Have a listen to the opening track to Animal Collective’s upcoming Fall Be Kind EP.

Upon first listen, thoughts of old musicals and a large orchestra came to mind. However, the end threw me for a loop when I first heard it. I mean, a fucking pan flute solo? That’s a surprise if there ever was one.

The scary thing is, it works.

Domino’s lack of valid XHTML output Today I decided to give XPages a try. Being a Domino deve

Domino’s lack of valid XHTML output

Today I decided to give XPages a try. Being a Domino developer, I’ve been creating web sites in Domino like they’ve been done for a long time. I have a view containing some documents that are available on the web, even went to the extent of making some design changes recently and some server configuration changes so that I could have SEO friendly URLs and hide all the Domino URL bloat. All of which was pretty easy. My biggest pain with developing web sites on the Domino platform is the pain of making Domino output valid XHTML, which if you’re a Domino developer, you know isn’t that easy of a task.

So far my biggest helpers have been the $$HTMLFrontMatter field for setting the page’s DTD, I use XHTML Strict. The other field I use is $$HTMLTagAttributes for adding XHTML namespace and page language which you need if you want W3’s validator to pass. Although after all of this, you still have things like the Body tag having a text and bgcolor attribute which aren’t compatible with XHTML Strict and there doesn’t seem to be much in terms of removing those. That and there’s the RichTextField that produces loose HTML. I got around that with the &OutputFormat=xhtml URL parameter, thanks to lekkimworld.com for that one. After all of that I decided to give XPages a try.

On to XPages

XPages uses JSF technology, so I figure there’s probably a better chance of having valid XHTML output. I’m no expert on XPages, in fact today was the first time I even looked at them. After looking around for some introductions, I found XPages Framework on OpenNTF.org. After I downloaded the template and copied it to my server, I created a new database from it. Running Lotus Notes 8.5.1, it launched the designated XPage in the client without a problem. Tried it next in the browser, and….. Do not pass Go, Do not collect $200….. I got a an unexpected runtime error.

javax.faces.FacesException: The generated page version 8.5 is not compatible with the server version 3.0, for the page /ccSearch.xsp.

Turns out, the template was designed for Domino 8.5.1. My Notes client is 8.5.1, but my server, well that’s a mere 8.5. So time to upgrade my Domino server.

We seem to be in a state of chaos at my house these days. My roommate, Hannah, bought a house, which is great – for her. But for Cody and I, who have been in this position before, it meant spiraling into New Roommate Mode.

Lucky us, we found Autumn, a fantastic new roommate! The only problem: she needed to be in mid-month, and Hannah wouldn’t be out till December. So right now, my living room has all of Autumn’s possessions piled to the ceiling and poor Autumn is spending her nights on the couch.

But despite the chaos, I always get excited about an opportunity to change, refresh and update my living quarters. Especially around the holidays! Today Cody will pick up the couch he found abandoned on Lee Street from the upholsterist (vintage parlour frame, recovered in blue/grey chenille); next week, the dark wood, vintage coffee table from Clement, our favorite home decor store in Little Rock.

For once, we’re actually agreeing on the general direction we want the living room to take! So I thought I’d post a few photos that we’ve drawn inspiration from.

I slept in wayyyyyy too late today. But! What almost makes it worth it, is that Animal Collective have kicked a new track from their upcoming release, Fall Be Kind, our way. The track is called Graze, and you can hear it, by “watching” the video below.

Remember, Fall Be Kind EP is set to digitally drop November 23rd, that’s next Monday, so you don’t have to check your calenders. The physical release wont hit stores until December 8th. I must admit, I would love to review the album when it digitally drops, but I’m not sure. I might hold out until I can break the tunes in on vinyl…we’ll see.

Graze!

Andreas Margara (16. November 2009)

Yes, yes, I know: this is the plaint of about half a zillion people since this spring. I still tool wistfully about the mag stand at the bookstore, hoping to find a print magazine that will be comparable, but there’s nothing that quite fits the cute little niche Domino occupied.

Apparently, one of the stylists for Domino, and other assorted publications, Lili Diallo, is continuing to style. (How much do I love that “styling” is a profession? But it makes sense — some people just have a knack and a definitive aethetic sensbility. Diallo has a website, and I can look through it and remember some of the layouts in Domino.

The food and clothes styling are kinda “eh” to me — but the homes! I can’t directly put up the photos that I am all “Oooh, shiny!” about, but seriously — go look at her website and see some of the pretty for yourself.

Want You to Want Me Part Three: The Revolution Will Be Televised Writer: Daniel Way Penciller: Paco

Want You to Want Me Part Three: The Revolution Will Be Televised

Writer: Daniel Way
Penciller: Paco Medina
Inker: Juan Vlasco
Colorist: Marte Gracia
Letterer: VC’s Joe Sabino
Assistant Editor: Jody Leheup
Editor: Axel Alonso
Cover: Jason Pearson
Publisher: Marvel Comics

It’s hard to believe this is only the third issue of Deadpool that I’ve bought new of this series. Since picking up #15 to “try” at a friend’s persistent urging/recommendation, I’ve gone back and bought issues 12-14, the Secret Invasion trade, the Deadpool/Thunderbolts trade, a Suicide Kings hardcover, Merc With a Mouth 1-3 (and 4 “new”), as well as Deadpool #900 and Deadpool Team-Up #899. (And of course, also picked up this week’s Amazing Spider-Man #611 just because it had Deadpool in it).

As the above paragraph probably suggests…I’m hooked. I’m a total sucker for anything Deadpool right now. Of course…that’s for good reason The character’s at the top of his game under the various creative teams right now. And over-exposed or exploited as the character may be, I’m thoroughly enjoying such a concentrated dose of the character at present.

This issue picks up on Deadpool seeking to prove himself to Cyclops, that he can cut it s an X-man. Cyclops is handling a sensitive political situation, and Deadpool doesn’t exactly help. His involvement leads Cyclops to send Domino after the Merc…and a misunderstnding with her overhearing Cyclops talking to Wolverine keeps them from hanging onto Wade once they have him. We’re also given a sort of wacky take on H.A.M.M.E.R. and its agents that fits perfectly with Deadpool. The ending sets up the concluding chapter of this arc on a fairly generic cliffhanger.

The art’s good stuff here, and I continue to really enjoy Medina’s work. This contrasts with the cover art, which–while amusing enough–isn’t all that appealing. Still, I’m thankful for the interior being to my liking.

I like that this title is fairly well self-contained; despite the large number of other Deadpool comics and appearances going on at present, this story isn’t forced to acknowledge all of that; its story is its own entity.

This isn’t a great jumping-on point, really (but certainly is not the worst, thanks to the “Previously Page” that Marvel actually does very well with). As a whole, this really feels like the “main” Deadpool book, allowing the other books their status as “secondary” or “side” titles. This seems the book you’ll want to give a look at if you’re interested in Deadpool’s place in interaction with the current Marvel Universe’s ongoing continuity (Dark Reign and all that).

All in all, another solid issue, and I’m ready for the next.

Story: 7.5/10
Art: 8.5/10
Whole: 8/10

Hundreds of children and parents have found an excuse not to go to school or work, with the ocassion of World Day of Book of Records – day when all over the world recordman are trying to beat new… records.

One of the most bizarre records at this year’s edition was the longest human domino – 244 children from São Lourenço International School in Portugal have succeeded this performance on the football stadium in Faro Algarve. The previous record was held by an 121 man domino.

Today was very much more of the same – I broke down the last 2 sheets of 2400×1200 MDF (o

Today was very much more of the same – I broke down the last 2 sheets of 2400×1200 MDF (one 12mm, the other 16mm) using a circular saw and a guide. I really have a very low opinion of circular saws – dislike using them at the best of times. The real danger comes with kickback, and unlike a tablesaw where the kickback results in the piece of timber being thrown, when you are using a handheld circular saw, and it tries to kickback, it is the saw that jumps and bucks, and tries to rip out of your hands. It doesn’t take much to cause that to happen either. The blade only has to bind just a little in the cut for the blade to stop doing what it is meant to, transferring the power of the motor into the cutting tips of the blade, and instead transferring the motor power into a rotational force that your hands and arms have to resist or risk a runaway saw (and potentially serious damage). Even if you get away with it, your large sheet can incur some significantly horrendous scars.

I hate circular saws. It kicked back more than once on me – each time I twisted the blade slightly during the cut. It was a moderately powered saw – 1800W with a thin kerf blade, so I don’t know what was contributing to the (user caused) problem. Was it that the blade was thin, so could distort under incorrect loading easier and therefore bind? Was it the saw itself was too powerful vs its weight? Not powerful enough, so it stopped cutting when conditions were less than ideal? Whatever the cause, there is an underlying cause – I didn’t cut perfectly straight. I got past that task, but I’ll be happy if I never have to use a circular saw handheld again (and with the imminent arrival of the Torque Workcentre, which has a circular saw mount and can cut a full 1200 wide panel, I’m hoping it means I will never have to).

You might ask why I am using a handheld saw if I dislike them so much, when I have a large tablesaw? Simple answer – I might have a big saw, but a small shed – I have to break the sheet down smaller to be able to handle it in there. There is another reason – single-handedly managing a sheet that size through a tablesaw can still result in twisting the sheet (and having the sheet stop contacting the fence), and there is every potential of a kickback in that situation too. In future, if I have to do it by hand again I am going to take Marc Spagnuolo’s approach, and have the sheet resting on the ground, with a sacrificial board underneath (he uses polystyrene) – it will take more of the variables out of the picture and result in more ability to focus on, and control the saw through the entire cut. (I found I was overreaching near the end, and that is when things were going pear-shaped).

Despite the couple of….issues during the breakdown, things were pretty productive and I got both fridges made, as well as all the doors and tops cut. Now they are getting close to needing the finer details made and fitted – taps, knobs, handles and the small things that take the build from the ordinary just up to the next level.

All coming together

Some of the additional details I want to add include the fridge door- adding a shelf (on the inside obviously, like a real fridge), and an egg holder shelf. It is little, easy details like that which will elevate the overall build to a level I will be happy with giving these to friends. I still need to cut the stove elements, and the sink cavity, make the stove knobs, door handles etc etc – now that hard work (not necessarily the heavy work) begins. I’m really looking forward to this part of the project – when it comes to life.

While I was working today, I found myself using one tool (other than the Domino) a number of times – one I find really useful. It is the Black & Decker PowerFile. I’ve had it for a number of years, and it is great for getting into areas, minor shaping, quick hinge mortising etc.

B&D Power File

It is a belt sander, running a finger-wide belt with an exposed end. Not very clear in the photo, but the notch seen here in the MDF to fit around the cabinet upright was cut on the bandsaw. I then needed to round the edge, and that is where the power file came into its own.
