Whoops – not a good day. Feeling knackered and coldy this morning I decided to skip weightwatc

Whoops – not a good day.

Feeling knackered and coldy this morning I decided to skip weightwatchers with the kids (who were both acting up a little), switched the heating on and stayed at home. Ben and I kept warm with his new game (chase the invisible horsie that keeps running round and round in circles) until I was too dizzy to run around Ciaran’s mat anymore.

My Mum came round just before lunch to take Ben to her house for a little Ben – Ninny time. He ate lunch with her while me and Ciaran had my lunch (last nights vegetable cous cous reheated) and his lunch (milk followed by cooked carrot sticks).

We then thought about what we could do for Christmas. As a one income family with an adversion to credit hubby has imposed a strict budgets this year so I wondered how I could pad my measly present budget. Hubby then called to say that a nappy had hit the fan at work, he would be in and out of meetings and there would be an extra meeting one night this week but he didn’t know when yet.

I fretted a bit, when you work in a council political changes always bring risks, when you work closely with the elected members as hubby does political changes can bring huge risks. This wouldn’t matter so much if I was still working but of course I have decided to be a stay at home Mum, working longer hours with the worlds most irrational bosses for no pay. Whoops.

Ben and my Mum came home around 3 (with a chocolate mousse, the only way she could bribe him into the car apparently) I sent my Mum home with a massive portion of apple and plum cobbler for my Dad (after 6 years of marriage I should know hubby hates anything with cooked apples). Ben then pretended to eat his portion of veggie cous cous and managed to eat his portion of cobbler with much more enthusiasm.

Hubby got home and finished the contents of his lunch box with Ben and made a plea to my better nature. He had gone through a hard day, he was tired and low; could I bear to give up the pasta sauce cooking in the slow cooker for a Domino’s two for tuesday deal? This was actually a bit of a pain in the bum. Domino’s came to Flitwick last week and our first taste of them was very disappointing, an hour late with toppings on one half of my cold pizza only.

What’s a wife to do? I graciously agreed to ditch the pasta sauce for a domino’s and after much swearing at the laptop managed to place an order for 2 medium pizza’s and a garlic bread online at 6:30 (in between Ciaran’s bath and bottle). I then finished up washing Ben by washing his hair (to his disgust) and dragging him screaming from his beloved bath to the cruel world of being dry and dressed.

We watched Simpson’s and were about to go up to bed when the pizza arrived (shocking only half an hour after we ordered it, on a night when I banked on them being an hour at least). Ben saw the boxes and announced that it was a pizza and then grabbed the little garlic pizza bread box.

Hubby rested the boxes on Ben’s little table (toddler tables are perfect for take-aways) and we all laughed at our two year old pulling the little garlic bread pizza towards him. He tucked in as we ate our pizza’s occasionally telling us “Me love pizza”. At half seven I called time on his pizza eating, he was just nibbling at his slice clearly not hungry but refusing to let it go.

I dragged him kicking and wailing up the stairs away from his pizza to have his teeth brushed and a bedtime story, the little tinker managed to get two stories out of me by grabbing both the Red and Green books from my hands and running to his bed laughing in the knowledge that he would get two Roald Dahl stories out of me tonight.

So thank you Domino’s. Tonights pizza was diet destroyingly delicious, my toddler loves your food and I simply can’t compete? What’s a girl to do? Well… I’m going to have a beer and the last slices of my pizza in front of Holby City.

MarketingProfs’ Digital Marketing Mixer blows into the “Windy City” next week (Oct

MarketingProfs’ Digital Marketing Mixer blows into the “Windy City” next week (Oct. 21-22). About 300 people, many of them sales execs, are expected to attend.

Social media, search marketing and integrated marketing are at the top of the agenda for the two-day powwow, which ZoomInfo is helping to sponsor. Hoping to get a taste of what’s in store, we spoke with Paul Chaney, Internet marketing director for Bizzuka, who will be moderating a panel on how micro-blogging network Twitter can boost sales and build brand loyalty. Panelists include David Deal, VP-marketing at interactive ad agency Razorfish; Marla Ervin, interactive art director at Whole Foods Market; Ramon DeLeon, operating partner of Domino’s Pizza, and Allan Schoenberg, director of corporate communications at CME Group, the world’s largest derivatives exchange.

“If there’s skepticism, it’s in the sense of ‘How do we make this work?’” said Chaney, who is the author of “The Digital Handshake: Seven Proven Strategies to Grow Your Business Using Social Media.” ”Salespeople are oriented to making calls, making appointments and making sales, which is more of a direct response form of marketing. But when you come to social-media-as-marketing, it’s a different animal. It’s not direct response or lead gen. It’s engagement. It’s getting people to spend time with your brand and people who represent your brand, and out of that relationship comes trust.”

Chaney is steeped in social media. Prior to joining Bizzuka in August 2007, Chaney helped to launch Blogging Systems, a blog software company that targeted the real estate industry. He currently serves as president of the International Blogging and New Media Association (IBNMA) and is a member of the board for the Women’s Wisdom Network, the Social Media Marketing Institute and SmartBrief on Social Media.

Despite his pedigree, Chaney appreciates how skittish companies are about the returns on social media. (He recently wrote a blog post about a Citibank survey showing that small businesses are not joining social networks.) “It’s still so new and the metrics around it are still being codified,” he said.

Nevertheless, he insists that companies ignore social media at their own peril. The crux of the biscuit is approaching social media as strategic – not tactical. “What first has to happen for sales execs or companies is to adopt this new culture and new mindset,” he said. “If you focus solely on tools, it doesn’t matter that you have latest [shiny new thing] if you first haven’t changed the mindset.”

Chaney said that sales managers need not be cowed by social media tools such as Twitter. “Twitter can bend to your will in a way that suits your needs,” he added. “Begin with a focus on posting information to Twitter four or five times a day, with links to relevant articles or, say, the mention of a client.”

Twitter is more business-oriented than people admit; it just functions on a more personal level, Chaney said. “Sometimes it’s conversation that is geared toward a particular end, and sometimes it’s just a conversation.”

~~By InsightAnalytical-GRL

Haven’t been posting lately because of family obligations….aging parents take lots of time…

However, I’ve been mulling over the investing scene in very brief spare moments. It’s a process of re-education, after nearly 20 years of “buy and hold.” No more of that. Oh, it’s OK to hold, but it’s time to learn how to take money off the table. Being 20 years OLDER puts some urgency behind this effort.

Trying to understand technical analysis, learning about business cycles, you name it. Then, trying to figure how that all actually fits in during a time when NOTHING is normal!

Of course, most of the official economic numbers are pure fiction, as is the story about how everything is “improving.” Even phony numbers can’t hide the truth, that the long-term picture is not rosy at all. Full time “spinners, ” however, have the story down pat and a lot of Americans are willing to believe it. It’s an easier story to buy into if you’re in financial trouble. HOPE, you know…

Locally, I’ve discovered an economic indicator that might apply to your neighborhood, too.

I’ve noticed a SEVERE drop-off in pizza deliveries! No kidding, before the economic mess hit, the Papa John’s, Dominos, and Pizza Hut drivers were in and out of here constantly, not only for dinner, but for lunch, too. These day…nada. Oh, last week there was one delivery I saw, to a house were new people were moving in. But, as for the regular trade? It’s gone. Kaput. Zip.

If you want to get a view of how officialdom views the economic landscape these days, then take a gander at this stuff from the Council of Foreign Relations’ Center for Geoeconomic Studies. They’ve issued a nifty-keen treatise entitled…(drumroll)

Quarterly Update: The Recession in Historical Context (pdf file)

How does the current economic and financial downturn match up to past contractions? As before, this chart book provides a series of answers, plotting current indicators (in red) against the average of all post–World War II recessions (blue). To facilitate comparison, the data are centered on the beginning of the recession (marked by “0”). The dotted lines represent the most severe and the mildest experiences in past cycles. Because the current downturn is frequently compared to the Great Depression, the appendix plots the current recession against the 1930s.
Three things to look for in this update:
• Some economic indicators suggest a rapid return to economic growth. Manufacturing sentiment has breached 50, indicating an expansion, and is now nearly at its post-war recession average.
• The fiscal deterioration is unprecedented, but the stimulus that is in part driving the budget deficit has had some positive impact. The “Cash for Clunkers” program raised auto sales relative to the start of the recession to a normal level from well below its post-war minimum. This has helped clear auto inventories.
• Although financial market spreads have come down from unprecedented levels, they remain well above the average during recessions. And even though the rate of job losses has decreased, unemployment is still increasing. Even in the worst previous post-war recession, unemployment was improving by this point in the cycle. Difficult credit conditions and a challenging labor market could impede a sustainable recovery.

The charts are fascinating…here’s the first one (sorry it’s so small):

• The year-over-year fall in real gross domestic product (GDP) is the worst in the postwar period.

(Recessions start at “0″ and baseline numbers indicate the number of months out from the start…in these charts, “12, 16, 10, 24″ represents 2009.)

There are loads more fascinating charts which tell the tale and belie any talk of “positives”…

It’s worth a visit to the CFR site, because it has lots of data floating around that’s interesting and discussion of current foreign affairs and global economics. It’s like going into the belly of the beast, but it’s not all kissing up to our current leader, either. So, pick your way around and you can find some interesting nuggets.

I have to wonder if, while these think-tankers are churning out their reports, they’re sending out for pizza as often as they have in the past…

So it’s 9:38 according to the clock in the corner of my laptop, and I’m writing this post from work

So it’s 9:38 according to the clock in the corner of my laptop, and I’m writing this post from work (WordPress is blocked by the NHS so I’m writing it now and will post it up this evening when I get home… by which time the future tense will be present) because I am conscious that as I’m staying with my grandmother so that on her return from Italy, she’s not immediately in an empty house, I wouldn’t be able to blog. I started work at 8:30, and less than an hour later, I’m already bored and without very much (read: nothing) to do. I have tweeted from my phone (Twitter is also blocked at work! Damn those pesky IT people) and texted Hannah; I am listening to Brandy (Never Say Never) on my iPod with Mariah Carey (Rainbow) queued up; I am going to gaze at my Gucci bracelet and possibly email a picture of it to my parents in Barcelona, because they taunted me over the phone by telling me how many designer boutiques they had been past. No need to rub it in!

So writing this blog post in advance is tantamount to me killing time, which seems to be a lot of what I do at work these days! (As I type, one of my colleagues is demonstrating his juggling skills, so it’s obviously not just me. ) It’s certainly a step up from my previous job, where there was always a sense of urgency for rarely a legitimate reason, but it dawns on me that often, what we do in life is kill time. Reading American Psycho on the bus, Patrick Bateman describes how he spent the majority of his summer “in a stupor, sitting either in my office or in new restaurants, in my apartment watching videotapes or in the backs of cabs, in nightclubs that just opened or in movie theatres or in new restaurants.” Basically, we distract ourselves by doing things which seem “special” to fill up the time, except we spend so much time socialising or going places to socialise or entertaining ourselves, it’s depressing when I start to think how little we actually accomplish that matters. What am I trying to do with my life? Well, I work to save up money so that I can buy jewellery – as much as looking good is important to me, and as much as making yourself feel special is something that cannot be underrated, it hardly matters in the scheme of making an impact on the world. I save up money so that I can have driving lessons to get a car so I can travel. Okay, that’s important in terms of job skills and life skills. I am starting university on Monday to gain a qualification in Careers Guidance, so that I can help younger people realise what their options are, both educational and vocational, in order to get to where they want to be. That does count as making an impact. In the meanwhile, the only other important thing I do that could potentially touch and enrich people’s lives is my music, writing and producing and singing songs, practising piano and guitar so that I can accompany myself, and lately completing my album booklet and taking pictures of myself and photoshopping moody dark/neon scapes to complement the whole mood of the album. I guess that I am trying to enrich my life at the same time as trying to touch other people’s lives and make a difference, and there is nothing wrong with that.

But it’s how much time we kill in between doing those things. I mean, nobody, not even Beyoncé, can work 24/7, and we all need some down time and some “us time” and we all have the right to enjoy our lives and have some fun. Not everything is so serious, and as I’m growing older I’m learning to realise that more and take things a little easier when it’s okay to do so. In between laundry and checking on my nan’s house and turning on the fridge and watering the plants yesterday, I watched a few dvds and ate Dominos pizza. But the amount of time we waste is just insane, because we don’t even realise that we’re doing it. And yet, talking to Ebony on Monday, I was talking about the unspoken pressure put on us by older generations that although I am 23 and she is 24, we should have managed university and got a steady job and be on the way to buy a house and drive and be looking to get married in the near future. The world is a different place now, and the economy means that jobs and money and affordable decent places to live aren’t as easy to come by as they once were. I consider myself lucky to have finally escaped retail and got a position in an office where I feel comfortable, am better paid and often do a lot less I also get to use my brain a lot more, and I feel more valued because of that. But there is a tension between it being okay to kill time, and then a sense of urgency that before we know it, we will be 30 and single and still living at home and a failure at life. Please! I have no intention of letting that happen, and although sometimes life happens beyond your control and deals you a bad hand, I’m determined to make a bid for independence and career success very soon. I am making moves towards that with my new university course and increase in money, which will hopefully get me a driving licence and a qualification with real job prospects come the end of the next academic year. But it’s hard to keep a sense of urgency in perspective when it’s also so easy just to kill time and do things which seem unavoidable but are semi-unnecessary. I don’t know where to find that balance or how to achieve it, but at least I know it needs to be done.

Domino’s Pizza in the Netherlands has recently come up with an ingenious marketing idea. They

Domino’s Pizza in the Netherlands has recently come up with an ingenious marketing idea. They’ve taken delivery beyond just home and office … to the beach, the park and other areas where people may be hanging out with hungry friends. The concept comes complete with a “delivery door” that can be used as the destination for delivery people who now need a way to find people without using street signs, maps and house numbers. Even more brilliant is that the door (which includes the local Domino’s phone number) serves as a highly visible ad for the company. And, the “delivery points” are fairly mobile.

It’s a fairly simple idea, but why didn’t anyone else think of it before now? Just goes to show what a little outside the box thinking can do. Now, think about what you can do to make doing business with your company easier? Hint: Sometimes an outside perspective can help.

Just when fast food restaurants were on the road to recovery from ridicule from KFC’s Double D

Just when fast food restaurants were on the road to recovery from ridicule from KFC’s Double Down sandwich — a concoction of two chicken breasts encapsulating bacon, cheese, Colonel’s Sauce and shame that seemed engineered in a drunken college student’s apartment — and its sheer lunacy, McDonald’s is all, “Bitch, please!” and craps out (literally) the Mac Snack Wrap:

McD’s didn’t even try with this one; It’s a hamburger dookie drenched in cheese, shredded lettuce and thousand island dressing, wrapped in a wax paper tortilla shell. And customers have the privilege of paying $1.49 to eat this on the go, preferably with a 128-ounce Hyper Gulp soft drink!

This has to stop. Where is the bottom of this fast-food idiocy well? Between Domino’s Pizza throwing carb-obliterating messes their grade-school chefs dream up, and KFC doubling down on diabetes, it’s like corporations are throwing up their hands and groaning, “Fuck it.” Should we start the countdown for Burger King’s Muy Loco Whopper, two hamburger patties containing salsa, broken tortilla shells and tres leches cake?

Watching fast food restaurants race down to the lowest of the lowest common denominator of cuisine is like watching a Jersey Shore spelling bee. In this case, the customers lose.

Have any of you ordered from Dominos Pizza on-line before? If not, then you should definitely try it

Have any of you ordered from Dominos Pizza on-line before? If not, then you should definitely try it. It is very well done. It’s all animated and very specific for you. You can even customize the left and the right halves of your pizza to tailor it to your needs.

It’s a very user friendly website. You first select the size of your pizza, and the type of crust you want. For example, do you want crispy thin crust, Classic Domino’s Crust, or Deep dish? Then you go to the sauce types. You can have regular Marinara, Donair sauce or another one that I can’t remember. You can choose to have just a light amount, a medium amount, or an extra amount.

Then you move on to the toppings. What makes it fun, is that you get to see your pizza getting dressed after you add each ingredient. So let’s say you want mushrooms, but only on half the pizza. You select mushrooms, then you can specify whether you want a light amount, a medium amount, or extra. You can select each one and see how it lays it out on the pizza. This way it helps you decide.

After you’re done dressing your pizza, you can start all over with a new pizza, or move on. On the right hand side, your order summary is viewable.

Next is side dishes and drinks. You can chose to order pop, chicken wings, bread sticks, cheese sticks, cinnamon sticks(yum), and your dipping sauces.

After you’re done, you just hit checkout where you can either specify at what time you want your pizza to arrive, or, get it sent right away. They give you an accurate estimate of how long it will take, and list the store in your area that it’s being sent from.

This is a great service, and as such, I won’t be calling Domino’s anymore; I will only use their on-line system. I’ve used it twice now after having discovered it, and will continue to do so.

In fact, I just did!
