Empire magazine is featuring Iron Man 2 as the main article in their forthcoming January issue. Today they unveiled the cover for this new issue complete with the man of iron himself. I must say it looks amazing.

The movie from director Jon Favreau sees Robert Downey Jr. back as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Gwyneth Paltrow back as his lovely assistant Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle replace as Terrence Howard as Lt. Col. James Rhodes/War Machine. There are also some new characters including Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson, Justin Hammer played by Sam Rockwell and Ivan Vanko/Whiplash played by Mickey Rourke.

It’s in cinemas from May 5th, 2010 and is sure to be one of my favourite movies of next year.

Continuing on the series of excellent, serious films with comics in lead, here’s another one.

Continuing on the series of excellent, serious films with comics in lead, here’s another one.

What defines a man? Is it his bank balance, the house he buys or the car he drives? Or is it his job? The smart ones would disagree with all that and tell you it is the friends and family that make a man, not his bank account, or his car or even the house. A man could lose all his money, his house, his car, his job, but if he has his family and friends with him, he’s gonna come through any amount of difficult time with ease. And that’s what the most experienced of men would tell you. But what happens of a man who has all the money in the world, a great job, a beautiful house in one of the most amazing cities in the world, but has lost all those dear to him. How does life change for him? This is definitely one of the most difficult questions and one that nobody would like to learn about through a personal experience or watch it happen to someone very close to them.

Dr. Alan Johnson (played by Don Cheadle) gets a chance to watch it happen to a very close, old friend Charlie Fineman. Dr. Charlie Fineman, who has lost his wife and three daughters in the 9/11 attacks, was Alan’s roommate in college. Johnson found out about Fineman’s loss through the network of friends from dental college that both attended as younger men. Johnson remembers Fineman as a man full of life, his best friend. Johnson runs into Fineman on the street one day, a couple of years after the Manhattan incident and is shocked at Fineman’s behavior, his refusal to even recognize his old college roommate. Johnson finds out that Fineman is living out a strange life – playing video games, banging on drums at a shady night club and constantly listening to loud music, tuning out the world and his tragedy from his thoughts. Johnson sees that he’s hurting inside and decides to help him out. What he does not realize is that he himself is looking for a reason to find meaning his own life with his wife and two daughters.

Adam Sandler as Charlie Fineman, Reign Over Me (2007)

Charlie Fineman is played marvelously by none other than Adam Sandler. Yes! Adam Richard Sandler. Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison, Adam Sandler. And it would be an understatement to say that he was brilliant in portraying the man who has nothing to live for and yet is somehow alive, breathing, hardly ever talking to anyone, living in his own little world of a shady night club, banging on drums with the band, riding his motorized scooter, playing video games to the point that his eyes start to hurt and still going on and on with it, trying to lose himself in what’s left of his existence and tuning out the hurt and pain from the overwhelming loss of his loved ones.

Never could I imagine a man like Sandler in a role so complex, something which he actually glided through it with relative ease. A must watch, especially if you hated any of Adam Sandler’s earlier performances.

OK, so I don’t listen to much commercial radio. And I hardly watch any TV these days. But like you, I’m beginning to hear that jingling sound in ads that indicates…WE’RE IN THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

Well, you can watch one of my favorite holiday movies at any time of year. Heck, I watched it last July and still wept like a baby, yet laughed and smiled in far more parts. It’s The Family Man with Nicolas Cage, Tea Leoni and Don Cheadle. It uses the classic Dickens “A Christmas Carol” contrast technique, but with a great twist. And that’s all I’ll say.

Plus, did I mention that Tea Leoni is in this movie?

Well, I just checked Amazon and can’t believe they’re selling this DVD for $6.49.

You know, I don’t watch a lot of movies either. But I have no problem looking at The Family Man again and again.

Såg Reign on me (Mike Binder, 2007) nyligen där The who- låten figurerar. Ja, kanske New york-patriotisk. Han gjorde en bra rolltolkning iallafall.

(Jag vet att Jenny älskar Adam Sandler. Shit vad hon har kallat mig för Julia Gulia p. g. a god damn The wedding singer (Frank Coraci, 1998)

Over the past week, we’ve chronicled Don Cheadle and friends playing poker to benefit Darfur, Selena Gomez working for UNICEF, and Anthony Edwards running the New York City Marathon to help build a Kenyan children’s hospital. Each time, we’ve received at least one comment along these lines: “What about all of the problems here? Why don’t these stars help Americans first?”

It’s not an unreasonable question – though maybe those folks missed our coverage of Georgia flood relief, David Spade helping firefighters, Moby donating concert proceeds to domestic violence shelters, and our first Find The Good story, Ludacris helping donate cars to people in need.

It’s true that many of the highest-profile celebrity charity efforts seem to be aimed overseas. Is that because those projects seem more exotic, or is the need there truly greater? Plenty of stars are working to solve domestic problems, from David Arquette’s constant work with food banks to Adam Lambert helping schoolkids to Soleil Moon Frye’s advocacy of Alzheimer’s awareness. And let’s not forget the king of celebrity philanthropy: the late Paul Newman, whose Newman’s Own foundation has donated more than $280 million to thousands of different charities, in the U.S. and around the world.

But back to our question: should American celebs focus on American causes, or is all charitable work laudable, regardless of location? And for those who favor domestic efforts, what should take priority? (Are you doing anything toward that cause?) And do you know of any stars whose work we should be profiling here?

Did you hear the one about the actor and the poker champ? Actually, it’s no joke: Don Cheadle

Did you hear the one about the actor and the poker champ? Actually, it’s no joke: Don Cheadle and Annie Duke have raised some $2.5 million for Darfur over the last few years with celebrity poker tournaments. Their charity, Ante Up For Africa, brings together stars from the worlds of showbiz, sports, and poker to have a lot of fun – and raise a lot of money and awareness. Their latest event is this Thursday in California.

“People really underestimate the generosity of the poker community,” says Duke, who’s also raised millions for Children’s Hospital Boston and other causes. “It’s filled with people who are really committed to giving back and using whatever resources they have in order to improve the world.”

Cheadle, who received an Oscar nomination for “Hotel Rwanda” and saw the devastation in Darfur first-hand when he traveled there with a Congressional delegation, is serious about helping the war-torn region – and about poker. He protested only mildly as Duke described to me how Cheadle took down superstar Phil Ivey at the 2007 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship. And he’s not the only celeb intent on the game: Casey Affleck, one of the big winners at last year’s Ante Up For Africa event, is back this year, and his big brother Ben has qualified for some high-profile tournaments.

Winners at the Ante Up For Africa events generally donate most or all of their winnings to the cause, but Cheadle says the tournaments are also about building awareness: “Money is obviously extremely important; it’s an effective tool to get things accomplished. But in the end, awareness is what really matters, because we all know that the lasting solutions to these problems are actually political solutions, and you don’t get political solutions without the people that are electing those governments caring about the issues.”

I asked whether it wasn’t an odd pairing: well-off celebs having fun around a poker table in the name of desperate people forced to flee their villages half a world away. Duke pointed out that the events encourage people to stay involved, increasing the money and awareness raised. “Everybody wants to give, but they also want value in return for their time,” she told me. “I’m not sure anything is more effective than a poker tournament, because people come and they can genuinely hang out with celebrities and some of the famous poker players, and just have a really fanstastic time while they’re giving.”

Say what you like about celebs’ motivations for how they use the spotlight – and I’m sure many of you will, in the comments – but it’s hard to argue with results. And Cheadle is accustomed to taking flack for using his celebrity for good causes.

“Some people look at that and are cynical about it, and think that it’s just frivolous celebrities trying to give themselves some sort of gravitas sometimes,” he told me. “But I still say, even if it is that, there is still something going on over there, and we want you to look over there. So you try and take the opportunity whenever you can.”

California Sen. Jay Bulworth (Warren Beatty), reduced by years of compromise and scheming, hires a hit man to put him out of his misery. Kicking off an election campaign with nothing to lose, Bulworth lets his mouth get his ass in hot water.

Now for me I like a lot of satirical films, such as Natural Born Killers and also This Is Spinal Tap.., but I never really found the politician satirical films to be that interesting or funny. I always felt like they were just trying to imitate real-life figures in politics and make a different story, but this one is very different and I actually enjoyed it.

This movie is passed off as a comedy, but I think more importantly it says what we wish a lot of politicians would say all the time, which is the truth. Granted this movie is only one opinion, but the talk about race and more importantly class, is right on if you listen to what he actually says, part of it will either make you sick or really stop to make you think. The message that lies within the film is heartfelt and actually shows us a lot of true elements to what we want for our country but in a hugely melo-dramatic way, but with a really strong sense of comedy.

The comedy in this film never really gets old, and I actually found myself laughing at a lot of what Beatty said but also a lot of people around him were saying. The racist slang’s that Beatty uses are hilarious to listen too but also very true in what he says half of the time, and what shows to be the strength is it’s screenplay.

I felt like some parts in this film were not needed at all. The love story between Halle Berry and Beatty was pretty lame, and not needed, and put in just for the sake of having a love story. Also by the end of the film I felt it got a little too predictable. There is a little bit of symbolism that runs throughout the film that when it first came up basically made me know what was going to happen for the rest of the film.

Beatty, though as much as I try to dislike him, I just can’t help but love him in this film. This is basically his film as he is director, main actor, producer, and also co-writer. He does a very good job with all but ultimately succeeds in his acting. This isn’t the normal woman charmer dick like Beatty we have seen before he actually plays a different character than all of his other films, and breaks down barriers that some thought could never be broken. It breaks down and so does his performance and it really does show he can act in different roles and play different people, and not the same guy all the time.

Consensus: Bulworth is a little predictable by the end, but Warren Beatty does a great job at keeping this movie hilarious but also very true in it’s message about race in politics, without ever losing it’s charm.

“I’m in the game and still playing.” Such are the words of the late Tunde Samuels, executive producer of the National Black Theater and dear friend of actor Tobias Truvillion.

Born October 1, 1967, Tobias Truvillion is an actor best known for his portrayal of the character Vincent Jones of the daytime soap One Life to Live.

We recently caught up with the New Yorker for this rare interview. I’m sure you’ll find it as enjoyable as I did.

How did you get your start in the television and film industry?

I was a hungry, ambitious model who wouldn’t let barriers stop me. I was a Ford model for a long time. I did a lot of fashion work. Along the way I was introduced to Phynjuar (pen-wah) who help me hone in my acting chops. Once bitten by the bug I never looked back. I have a deep passion for the arts.

You played Vincent Jones in the long-running soap opera One Life to Live. What was that experience like?

Working on the set of “One Life” was a wonderful experience. I learned so much from watching great talent like Timothy Stickney, Phil Carey, Bob Woods, Renee Goldsberry and Kamar del Reyes – to name a few. Watching and listening taught me a great lesson. It’s so much more to be a great listener. Frank Valentini gave me an opportunity and a great character. I did my best to bring him (Vincent Jones) to life. I can’t wait to resurrect him and bring him back to the canvas. I can’t wait to bring that leading man presence back to daytime television.

You are a partner in designing custom shirts called Get On or Get Under. Tell us about this venture.

Get on the bus or get under? Or get on or get under ? In its simplest form it’s Get On! It’s a brand/logo that our team developed. We’re also a production company. We create commercials, music videos and webisodes. We also build video games and are now moving into developing and producing independent and feature films. We do almost anything that needs to be recorded. The core of “Get On” means to do something different with your life. Follow your dreams. Put in hard work. Determination. Dedication. Disipline. Surrender to God. Anytime one of us says “Get On” that simply suggests it’s time to do the work! It means it’s your time to shine. One of the most unselfish acts to do is to give to someone. That’s also what “Get On” means. To give to others treat people how you would want to be treated. “Get On” is more than a brand; it’s a consciousness, a movement of like-minded minds, souls and spirits. Once you “Get On” we’re heading to that Promised Land. It cuts it very clean or dry. Either you’re On or your Under. There’s no time to waste. Sh*t or get off the pot.

You mentioned Phynjuar, the mother of the late Michelle Thomas. How is Michelle’s spirit evident in your working relations with Phynjuar?

I am so fortunate to have a wonderful relationship with Michelle Thomas’ mother, Phynjuar. I never had the pleasure to actually work with Michelle, but being around her mother, I see where she gets her beauty her brains and her talent. (Phynjuar is) such a wonderful soul of unconditional love. Michelle’s light just radiates from her mother. Integrity, dignity and showing people your talent on high level is not always an easy thing to accomplish. Michelle did that with ease. It’s a direct reflection of the love and support her mother gave, and continues to give her. She is deeply missed.

What advice do you have for aspiring actors?

To all aspiring talent out there be fearless, have tough skin and never use the word “can’t” because anything is possible. Be dedicated to your craft. Put God first and He will never let you down.

What projects do you currently have in the works?

I’ve been cast in Antione Fuqua’s new film “Brooklyn’s Finest”, opposite Wesley Snipes and Don Cheadle. The film is scheduled to be released in November 2009. Also look out for a movie I did called “The Tested.” You can go to thetestedthemovie.com to see the trailer. It’s has a 2010 release date.

As I close yet another interview I’m recalling Tobias’ favorite quote: “I’m in the game and still playing.”

Still playing,

Whoever thought computer hacking was such a dangerous job. Rogue agent Gabriel Shear (John Travolta)

Whoever thought computer hacking was such a dangerous job.

Rogue agent Gabriel Shear (John Travolta) is determined to get his mitts on $9 billion stashed in a secret Drug Enforcement Administration account. He wants the cash to fight terrorism, but lacks the computer skills necessary to hack into the government mainframe. Enter Stanley Jobson (Hugh Jackman), a n’er-do-well encryption expert who can log into anything.

Swordfish definitely has too much plot for one movie, maybe also two movies. The director Dominic Sena, who is also known for directing Gone in 60 Seconds, is known for his little or no plot but has many gratuitous car chases, but with Swordfish he obviously doesn’t abandon the plot one bit.

The problem with this film is that the logic and the plot are out-of-this world. We can’t decide who’s the good guys and who’s the bad guys, too many times and we can’t just think in a movie that is all about war against terrorism. The storyline here as well is not very clear and the twist and turns are not bright and at times can be a little bit predictable. Also, when will Hollywood find out that computer typing scenes are just not that all exciting.

The film has many jumbled scenes, that just don’t feel like they belong in the movie at all. There are scenes that belong but there are too many that just don’t seem like they belong at all. Add a very confusing plot and a bunch of scenes that don’t belong and you just have a huge film of incoherence.

Though this film is very dumb it is not boring. Many of the action scenes are there and very cool to watch and I actually found myself amazed by some of the over-the-top action sequences other than confused. Special effects in movies get so much better every year and this movie shows how you can use those special effects to your advantage. Also, much of the script is very ironic and at times very comical if it doesn’t even fit in with the scenes.

Acting in this movie is highly OK. Halle Berry is not in this film much but does show she is great at being a total tease and very distracting to the others and the viewers themselves. John Travolta, is really going back to his Vincent Vega character from Pulp Fiction, but is still convincing and makes us believe in him. Hugh Jackman is also good in this film and shows a lot of promise as a actor and tries anything he can to sell this script. May I mention this is Halle Berry’s first nude scene and although many will go crazy, it seems really forced and doesn’t really match in with the story at all.

Consensus: Swordfish is as brain dead as its name. Its features an incoherent plot, random scenes, and overall just doesn’t have a noticeable sense of style, but is not boring.
