Overjoyed with her win, Johnson told press, “I think it was my presentation.  I was very confident on the stage.”

Knowing more than the doctors is not considered to be a healthy attitude. You are supposed to think that you know less and therefore that you should automatically do whatever yours tells you to do. This extends to thinking the way they do and feeling as they think you ought to feel.

Perhaps this is wisest if it is clear from their tests that you have a rare disorder or disease, that is in fact right there beneath the surface, detectable only by way of cat scan or ultra-sound. Then you really may have something wrong with you that should get corrected right now and you really should say that they know more than you do..

But is this really where you are at right now not having a diagnosis like this and  wanting to take off those awful looking 20-40 pounds, to say nothing of REALLY wanting to look like someone that might be a prime candidate for Hollywood or your local tryouts for Baywatch? That IS where you’re at, isn’t it? C’mon, be honest. Most of us baby boomers are that way, you know.

If you are having trouble admitting that that sums you up, it may be that you are suffering from Normalitis. This is a way of being that is just like your next door neighbors, who presumably are about the same age. Normality (not like where you’re at) is what you should be interested in because they think you should be interested in it just the same as does your doctor. Do YOU think you should be? Does the you within you think so–that’s the one which secretly feels a certain way, wants a certain thing, aspires….yes, ASPIRES…..to be a particular way in spite of what others think he should be interested in.

Some may have difficulty relating to these words. But, you wouldn’t be reading on unless you had at least a partial affinity to them. The question is what’s so bad about wanting to look like Sly Stallone now in his 60s if you happen to be in your 60s or Jane Fonda if you are a woman in your 70s. What is so bad about this really?

Your MD is unlikely to be sympathetic with these aspirations and will caution you against overdoing it, should you express an interest in pressing forward.. Same goes for your neighbors as you already knew. The question is will you listen to their depressing counsel of any of them?

Looking back at pivotal events that took place within the business world in 2009, it is becoming increasingly clear that there are five macro trends that will be shaping a New Way to Work in 2010 and beyond. Together, these five trends point to a New Way To Work in which creativity and innovation are more valued by employers than ever before and the traditional notion of work as merely an economic activity is being supplemented by ideas about happiness and well-being.

Here are the five trends that I feel are creating The New Way To Work and what they mean to me:

(1) Organizations will embrace Design Thinking. In 2009, Tim Brown, the CEO of IDEO (arguably one of the most important design consultancies in the world), published Change By Design, which suggested that organizations must go even further in their embrace of right-brain, creative thinking. Design must become more than an aesthetic — it must become an integral part of the overall process of how companies think about products, services and customers. By extension, “design thinking” must now become part of any worker’s toolkit.

As Daniel Pink first suggested five years ago in his bestselling A Whole New Mind, right-brain thinking — in the form of creativity, innovation and big picture contextual thinking — is an increasingly important way for workers to demonstrate their value to their employers. Design thinking is, if anything, a stronger form of creativity and innovation that is focused around achieving specific business goals and objectives. As a result, design thinking will continue to play a key role in any organization’s business strategy as it attempts to differentiate itself vis-a-vis competitors. The most obvious examples are companies like Apple and Target, which have made breathtakingly-beautiful design part of their core value proposition.

(2) Women will play a more important role in re-defining traditional notions of work. In 2009, Maria Shriver and the Center for American Progress published The Shriver Report, which attempted to catalogue the many ways that women are changing the U.S. workplace. In 2009, for the first time ever, women now account for more than 50% of all jobs in America. At the same time, women account for 57% of all bachelor’s degrees and 60% of all master’s degrees, making them the most important part in any company’s talent pipeline. Quite simply, with women now a majority in the U.S. workforce, organizations will need to reassess how well they are responding to the needs of women in the workplace. This ranges from new thinking about customized careers and flexible work arrangements to fundamentally important notions of how to encourage managerial traits such as empathy and compassion.

The most successful organizations will be companies like Pepsi, which has made the recruiting, retaining and promoting of women a company-wide priority. At Pepsi, not only is the CEO a woman (Indra Nooyi), but nearly one-third of all executives are women. There’s an economic payoff, too, from ensuring that women are members of your Board of Directors and members of your senior management team. Business school researchers at Pepperdine and Maryland have found that companies with women in these roles actually out-perform their rivals.

(3) Small business owners will become the new stars of economic growth. The “credit crunch” of the past 12 months, in which financial institutions systematically withdrew liquidity from the banking system in the hopes of stemming the tides of bad loans and foreclosures, appears to be coming to an end. As liquidity slowly makes its way back into the banking system, the first beneficiaries will be small business owners — some of whom had their access to funding turned off seemingly overnight. In recognition of this fact, the Obama Administration has made small business the linchpin of many of its economic policies. At the same time, companies like Goldman Sachs — which recently created a $500 million fund to foster and launch 10,000 small businesses — and American Express – through its OPEN Forum for small business owners — are jumping into the fray, in the hopes of galvanizing economic activity at the grassroots.

Small business owners have often been overshadowed as the traditional media focuses on the empire builders (yes, Donald Trump, that’s you) and the titans of industry rather than unheralded small business owners. Heading into 2010, though, this trend appears to be reversing. Monocle, for example, published a Small Business Guide for 2010 that is chock-full of examples of how resilient small business owners around the globe are re-inventing their industries. From equity research companies in Stockholm to interior design firms in Tokyo to graphic designers in Munich, these small businesses are inspiring examples of how creative, nimble and risk-taking ventures can bring real economic change to any industry. The women and men who dare to dream big now will be the first to reap the rewards once economic growth returns.

(4) “Happiness” will become a way to measure economic prosperity. In September, Nicolas Sarkozy, the (often controversial) president of France, announced that his country was seriously considering a “happiness index” that would transform factors like “quality of life” and “vacation time” into a broader measure of overall economic well-being. In short, the traditional way to measure national economic activity – Gross National Product (GNP) – would be supplanted by something called Gross National Happiness (GNH). This, of course, is a fundamentally new way to think about work that surely has economists scrambling to find a way to quantify something so unquantifiable as “happiness.” Other than France, only the tiny Himalayan nation of Bhutan has had the pluck and audacity to adopt the concept of Gross National Happiness. In 1972, Bhutan adopted GNH as a way to symbolize its dedication to spiritualist, Buddhist ideals rather than purely materialistic, Capitalistic ideals.

In many ways, this thinking about “happiness” is part of an overall paradigm shift in the world of economics that takes us further away from the purely “rational thinking” paradigm. Behavioral economists, led by Princeton’s Daniel Kahneman (who won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2002), Yale’s Robert Shiller (who famously coined the term “irrational exuberance”) and Harvard’s Daniel Gilbert (who is typically credited as the founder of the “science of happiness”), are helping us understand that purely rational considerations are not all that matter when it comes to making decisions. (Shiller, in fact, specifically asked prominent New Yorker cartoonist Edward Koren to illustrate the book cover of Animal Spirits with his irrational wild things). Within the Obama Administration, ideas from the emergent field of behavioral economics are informing everything from solving for health insurance plans to helping workers save more in their 401(k) plans.

(5) Personal branding will become the buzzword of talented workers around the world. 2009 was the year that Gary Vaynerchuk and Dan Schawbel burst onto the scene with ideas about ways to use the leverage the Web for personal branding. Using everything from blogs to YouTube to Twitter, it’s now possible for everyday people to create a personal brand online — and then use it to launch new businesses based around their personal passions. Gary Vaynerchuk (known to his adoring fans as simply “Gary Vee”) showed what’s possible when you combine a passion for wine, a deep knowledge of social media, and a YouTube-ready personality. He turned a small family wine business into a national industry leader, becoming a national celebrity in the process.

Gary Vee has tapped into the current economic zeitgeist. Idealistic notions about lifetime employment with a single company are long gone. The only real job security is to create your own personal brand. With U.S. unemployment pushing above 10% in November, starting a new venture has become a very attractive option to millions of workers. Take the self-employment route and do what you love. Do it well, and you might just Crush It.

This last trend is perhaps the most important of all five mentioned above. The Internet as a distribution channel for a personal brand is unmatched. For freelance workers, the Internet has made it possible to showcase their best work to anyone in the world, at any time. Take photography, for example. Using the photo-sharing service Flickr, professional photographers have had a way to showcase and highlight their work. Starting in mid-2008, Flickr made it possible for anyone to buy royalty-free and rights-managed photos through a unique partnership with Getty Images. If your photography skills and talent are strong enough, you no longer need to give them away for free (the photo accompanying this blog entry was actually purchased via the Flickr collection of Getty Images).

Heading into 2010, I’m looking forward to watching how these five macro trends about The New Way To Work continue to evolve. Sometime in the future, no doubt, today’s world of work will look as wonderfully anachronistic as the world of Matthew Weiner’s Mad Men appears to us now.

I’ve always hated that Donald Trump appropriated “For the Love of Money” for his show, The Apprentice. Written by Kenny Gamble, Leon Huff, and Anthony Jackson, the song is a rebuke, with lyrics derived straight from the bible, against the evils of greed and materialism. Trump used it as a celebration and an affirmation of the love and worship of money. Ugh… Reminds me of how right-wingers flocked to Bruce Springsteen and his “Born in the USA” for all the wrong reasons.

I hope the right people still own that song…

If you wanna know who was the genius behind that opening bass guitar riff throughout this song, it is this guy, Anthony Jackson, now 57, based in New York City. Here’s what Wikipedia had to say about how that sound actually came about.

Anthony Jackson played bass guitar on the song. One day during fall 1973 (when Jackson was 21), producer/keyboardist Leon Huff was leading the members of the MFSB rhythm section and Jackson through a rehearsal. Sigma Sound Studios owner/engineer Joe Tarsia noticed that Jackson had a wah-wah pedal attached to his Fender Precision bass. Tarsia decided to run Jackson’s bassline through a phaser, giving it a swishing sound and later mixed in echo. During the final mixing of the track, Kenny Gamble impulsively reached over to the echo button and added echo to Jackson’s opening riffs.

Even though “For The Love of Money” is over seven minutes long, it was given heavy airplay in the early Seventies, both long and short versions, on black soul as well as white stations. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard R&B list and at No. 9 on the Billboard Singles chart in 1974. It is included in the O’Jays’ Ship Ahoy theme album, which charted No. 11 that year on the Billboard 200.

[...] The second single, “For The Love of Money,” is a protest against materialism with a groove that Rolling Stone described as “downright orgiastic”. The song was written around a bass line composed by Anthony Jackson, which in 2005 Bass Player Magazine described as “landmark.” Bass Player went on to note that the song has “become one of the most recycled singles ever, sampled continually by rappers, and appearing on over 75 compilation CDs, numerous movie soundtracks…

In other words, Anthony Jackson’s bass line for “For The Love of Money” ranks with that of Motown Funk Brother Robert White’s easily recognizable bass track for “My Girl.”

Jackson continues to perform singly and variously with other jazz musicians. He started out on the piano and worked his way to the bass guitar. He plays bass and his own invention, the six-string, or contrabass guitar. His influences are Motown mainstay James Jamerson whose performances made him pick up the bass; Oliver Messaien, the French composer, and Jack Casady of the Jefferson Airplane. Of Casady, Jackson said to Bass Player Magazine, “Casady, whom I’d first heard on Jefferson Airplane’s Surrealistic Pillow album in late 1966, had a big, rich, metallic sound with a full bottom and a curious, guitaristic way of playing that I was immediately drawn to. When I saw him perform live, I was struck by his dignity and serious mien.”

Hmmm. Those psychedelic types do have presence, I guess.

The O’Jays are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame–almost all of them: Walter Williams, Bobby Massey, William Powell and Eddie Levert. Unfortunately, their induction wasn’t all that appreciated by the surviving members of the group–I believe they were introduced by Justin Timberlake, of all people. In addition, one of the original members, Bill Isles, was not inducted at the same time, but the replacement for the deceased William Powell, Sammy Strain, was. Very strange. Very, very strange. Some people may not be getting things right.

They are a trio now: Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, and Eric Grant. They still perform live; their last album, Imagination , was produced in 2004.

It’s been more than four years since real estate mogul Donald Trump announced plans to build a high-rise residential project on Poydras Street.

The Big Easy is still waiting for The Donald’s project, Trump International Hotel & Tower New Orleans. The project apparently is moving forward; its Web site still mentions plans for the “magnificent tower.”

And, according to a story Wednesday on thedestinlog.com, “Planning is currently underway for a Trump Hotel and Tower in New Orleans, just a few hours from Destin.”

In February, an attorney for developers of the proposed Poydras Street project involving Trump said the project is on hold until the economy improves.•

Some of my best friends are MDS and a few even workout. Personally, I think they all should. But they have objections to doing so just like the rest of the Normal Majority (such as most  of my neighbors right here in the town house complex, whom I can see right out of my window.

The MDs who do workout have the same reasons for doing so as the non-MD Health Nuts (of which you may well be part). One often wonders if the greater part of the MD population feels the same to their seemingly trippy colleagues.

Why does the MD who shows up every morning, parking his Lexus in back of the club, do it? I asked him once and got an “I try to practice what I preach answer. I almost fell over. This means that he actually tells his patients to work out. This is incredible.

MDs, one would think, would all be all about healthy living. I and maybe even you would think that this would include a daily workout (along with low fat low carb eating and probably some really strong multi-vitamins.) Shouldn’t that be what they all should think we all ought to be doing?

Most do not unless they are just out of grad school, possibly. The older more established class of professionals really believe that rest and relaxation, R&R, is the safest way for most to make to retirement in one piece. On the other hand, the younger ones know that this is probably the best way to get yourself on expensive medications and into complicated surgical procedures down the road.

Diabetes, heart trouble, stroke are all part and parcel of being overweight. To say that over weight causes them is probably asking for a host of objections, but its generally true that they all are associated with those pesky extra pounds which fall into the obesity category as soon as they exceed 40 pounds over what has been pretty much the standard weight (normal) for the last 50 years.

Regular workouts keep you fit, which first of all means at a normal weight. They do this, PERIOD. And they cause other good things as well. These include escalated circulation, oxygenation of the tissues (including the brain, thereby minimizing the potential of Alzheimer’s) etc. Anyway, a few MDs believe this as well. I just wish all of them did, don’t you?

The most interesting one out of any leaked sex tape that I have been forced to review as a ‘journalist’ comes from newcomers Miss Japan 2008 Miroko Mima and Miss Trinidad & Tobago Anya Ayoung-Chee who both met and competed in the 2008 Miss Universe pageant with Carrie Prejean. 

Do not be too curious, because why mess up a good gig over some prurient entertainment, unless of course, your job is to report on such news for a blog or other legitimate news reporting services.

I predict the two of them will be famous, but that Miss Trinidad and Tobago is flat-out beautiful. She will have an extensive career in front of the cameras, so do not be mad at her.

 I give this one 15 stars out of 10, and the leaked tape speaks for itself.

 It is being reported that the action was stolen off of her Miss Trinidad’s former boyfriend’s laptop, when he left it at a computer repair shop. That sounds to me like a lie, because we all know that most people delete their porn from their desktop before leaving it at a repair shop,….at least I do.

 I am obviously joking here with all of this, but it is amazing to me that there are so many high-profile people out there that film themselves having illicit sex. Carrie Prejean claims that she just wanted to give her boyfriend a gift, and I have heard that before many times from young girls.

I know when I bring gifts to an intimate female companion, I better show up with some flowers and merchandise if I plan on coming back. A sex tape will not cut it for the women I know, …but it would be great for them to make one and give it to me.

 I just would not be in it. Unfortunetly this does send out the wrong message to all the little girls out there that want to become celebrities. It seems as though that a ‘leaked’ sex tape is going to be mandatory for  young lady to rise to fame and popularity in today’s culture.

The viral nature of just such an exhibition has worked wonders for many of todays starlets and that might be a double-edged sword. 

I expect a lot of self righteous declarations of piousness to be espoused in reaction to this sexual exploitation in our culture, and I discourage any of my relatives to go down this path,so I do not have to be exposed to it.

 But, the reality of it is, is that it is not illegal if the parties are of age and consenting adults, it’s just inadvisable.

 I recommend a bit of discretion, but I do understand the pressure that we in Hollywood put on the female stars to stay relevant, and to be noticed.

If you are related to me, I suggest you make something eles for your boyfriend…

 Proceed with caution….as I call to book my one way ticket to Trinidad and Tobago with a layover in Japan!!!

On to the crappy complaining…Danger sign – not an original thought on my part, not that I have ever had one…but I read an article in the paper today that said that “debt maintenance” costs the State of California BILLIONS every year. That is the cost of maintaining debt we already have, basically paying interest. The article said, and of course this seems logical, that the cost of maintaining that debt is increasing exponentially. By the year 2018 it said the amount of debt maintenance as a line item in the budget would double to something like $18 Billion and that legislators themselves estimate it would take up 10% of the total budget. So the bottom line is that for us Californians 10% of the money taken out of your paycheck for state tax, 10% of the money you pay in sales tax (a whopping 9% in Clovis) and 10% of all the other fees we pay state wide are getting us…absolutely nothing. Great. And it won’t get better, it will get worse.

Another sign of the apocalypse I picked up on from the paper is that Omarosa from Donald Trump’s “The Apprentice” fame is getting her own dating show. There are so many things wrong with this I don’t even know where to begin. I think I watched one episode that season and was appalled at her behavior. I then saw her on a talk show where she acted proud of her lying and bitchiness as if they were admirable qualities. God help the people that watch these shows. She is a self admitted manipulator, she is a liar and a bitch. What man in his right mind would compete to date her? Well of course, men who want their fifteen minutes of fame and will humiliate themselves to get it. And Americans will watch. And Omarosa and Trump will make money of it. Holy crap what are we becoming?

Anybody look for a job lately? Having any luck? A recent glance at the Sunday classifieds in Fresno , with a metro area of about a half million, showed oh I don’t know maybe 30 or 40 jobs. About a half page after you eliminate the ads for trade schools and paper routes. Recently a job report came out the said something like 640,000 jobs had been created nationwide by the stimulus. Many news stations reported this as if it was a fact. “HEY, GREAT NEWS – over 600,000 jobs have been created and we are on pace for the 3 million jobs Obama said the stimulus would create!!! YIPPEE!” The problem – There is not even a semi-accurate way to accumulate that number. They counted many jobs two or three times by using multiple sources to accumulate the stats. So if they ask a person, an EDD office or temp agency and the employer – they could count the same job three times. Another problem is, there is no definition of what counts as a job. By all accounts there is no standard and a job could last two days and the person could be terminated, but it counts as a job. Don’t know about any of you, but a job for a week doesn’t help me much. Another problem – they counted jobs “saved” by stimulus funds as a job created. So some guy admittedly took stimulus money and gave raises to his current six employees, and the government counted this as six jobs created. This is a classic example of politicians manipulating numbers to suit their needs. I remember a few years ago a police chief in Philadelphia (not 100% sure of the city) was caught getting people to not report crimes, or to manipulate them so it wouldn’t be reported as a felony to make his stats look better. “Hey look, under my leadership there were 50% less rapes and murders!” In the meantime all of the data was useless because he had manipulated it to make himself look better, at the cost and peril of the residents of the city. All the while I bet he referred to himself as a public servant.

OK – I need some happy thoughts… Rugby game coming up!!! I missed Aspen which is an incredible tournament in an incredible location. Couldn’t make it because of work…but I have to make it next year…third week of September, 2010! Anyway, Over/Under 30 game December 5, 2009 in Fresno. Donald Trump Has an Aging Plane to Sell You

Donald Trump has suffered some financial setbacks over the past year. But have things gotten so bad that he’ll soon be forced to to fly commercial? Or is he just trading up? That remains an open question, but Trump did put his prehistoric Boeing 727 up for sale yesterday. How much Trump is expecting to collect for his home away from home isn’t disclosed in the official listing, although considering the plane predates Ivanka’s existence on this planet and it’s made 29,000 landings over the years, perhaps not that much. That said, Trump has kept it in excellent condition. The listing says the plane was given a fresh coat of paint earlier this year and the interior was recently refurbished. Plus two of the three bathrooms have “gold plated sinks,” there’s a queen-size bed in the master bedroom, and a “circular shower” installed in the master bath.
