Dana Thomas details in Newsweek how Versace became a bit of a mess after the death of Gianni. It used to rake in over $1 billion in sales, but now makes less than half of that. Run by the family since its inception, Donatella and Santo were reportedly resistant to changes that might have helped them adapt to new times and new economies. Thomas reiterates previous reports about ex-CEO Giancarlo Di Risio leaving the label abruptly earlier this year (after a five-year reign) over disputes with Donatella about cutting back her lavish lifestyle. (He apparently began trying to meddle in the creative side of things, which ultimately was the last straw for Donatella.)

Even when the family was slammed with an inheritance-tax bill that required them to take out a five-year, $100 million bond, the Versaces couldn’t let go of their material things.

“There was zero expense control in the company, and the lifestyle was absolutely, positively insane,” says the Versace source. “When the earnings went down, the lifestyle didn’t.”

But with the label bleeding money and readying to lay off 350 workers, the family has made concessions. Last year they sold their Lake Como estate, which is said to have devastated Donatella.

Thomas writes:

Many in the fashion industry believe it’s time for the brand to continue without Versace family involvement—and some suggest that the family is starting to accept this idea too. Last year, Santo was elected to the Italian Parliament. Allegra has been attending Brown University and has said her dream is to become an actress. And will Donatella remain at the helm? “Maybe,” says the former Versace executive. “Then again, maybe not.” Which, after a decade of turmoil, may be the best thing for the company after all.

But the problem with this scheme is, who will be the face of Versace? Everyone knows Donatella and her ridiculously blonde hair and tan skin and high heels and tight clothes. That means something. Even when the world is in turmoil, we can always rely on her to show up to the party on a private jet with lots of shiny accessories and an entourage, with an air of quiet importance, looking just the way she always does. The label may need a financial and structural makeover, but something’s so fascinating and comforting about that.

…aufgestanden, Bademantel übergestreift und auf den Torre der Masseria Coccaro geklettert, um das Spektakel störungsfrei zu erleben. Ganz langsam erhob sich die Sonne aus der Adria, genüsslich aalte sie sich in zartem Rosarot, minutenlang, bis die Nachtlichter aus Torre Canne, Savelletri und Capitolo immer schwächer wurden und es wirklich Tag war in Fasano. Danach ein paar leichte Aufwärmübungen auf dem Laufband, zum Wiedereinleben in Apulien, und Gucken, was man den Winter über so treiben kann, um sich fit zu halten. Macht sogar Spaß, irgendwie, wenn italienisches Frühstücksfernsehen läuft dazu, mit den Schlagzeilen und den Staumeldungen und dem Horoskop. Schwimmen fällt ja nun leider flach, dafür wird es langsam zu frisch, selbst mit dem Surfanzug aus dem Allgäu, schade, eigentlich, denn das Wasser fehlt und der weite Blick am Morgen, von den lieben Menschen am Lido ganz zu schweigen, die man die nächsten Monate wohl nur auf Facebook sieht. Dafür ist Donatella gekommen. Mittagessen mit der Freundin aus Venedig und Paris fühlt sich an wie nie etwas anderes gemacht und gemocht. Salat unter Heizpilzen und Kaffee auf der Sonnenterrasse, Entspannung pur, weit weg von Smalltalk. Man muss sich nicht Jahre kennen, um zu spüren, was man einander wert ist und nicht Wochen verbringen zusammen, um auf den Kern zu kommen. Angenehm.

Vivid pastels, short-skirts, geometric prints and downright sexy, all that was on display at the Versace Spring Summer 2010 collection. For Spring, Donatella Versace was inspired by Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (which comes out next March). “I loved the idea of that fantasyland,” she said.

Donatella Versace sheathed her models in the short and tight skirts, emanating power with towering stilettos.

The use of transparent printed plastic, an eye-catching combination of flesh and fabric, without the need for the usual complicated cutting and stitching. Bright colors and airy chiffon underlined the lighthearted spirit of the summer styles.

The use of triangles however didn’t evoke any classy undertones.

A vibrant, classy collection sure to appeal to the youth.

Donatella Versace’s latest line of handbags will feature images drawn by children, with profits benefitting children’s charities.

The designer teamed up with children at the Art Unites program at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.  Children were asked to draw their idea of friendship on a square of canvas.

The images will be turned into totes sold for $250.  All profits go to the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Jet Li One Foundation.

Over 1,000 different designs will be produced and two will have the honor of being part of a runway show this fall.  The designs will be unveiled in the October issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

Since the designs aren’t released yet, it’s hard to say if people will buy these totes or not.  Would you spend $250 for a purse with a child’s drawing on it since it’s for charity?  Would you buy one if it wasn’t?

Além do UC13, do Chile, “A Favorita” também estreou, porém na terça-feira, em Porto Rico pelo Wapa TV, às 13h30 (horário local), no lugar da minissérie “Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos”. O horário já é destinado a produções brasileiras. Atualizando os dados, a novela de João Emanuel Carneiro, que no Brasil teve média de 65% de participação, terá a sua exibição em 16 países no segundo semestre. Na América Latina, a trama foi vendida para 70% dos países que a compõem. Isso pode ser considerado uma grande vitória tendo em vista a forte concorrência que há na região com outras 5 emissoras de língua espanhola.

Mi piace scrivere alle 6.30 del mattino quando sto per andare a lavorare. Oggi per la cronaca ho un gruppo di turisti che hanno acquistato un tour panoramico con refreshment in un ristorantino tipico sardo. Che se vai a pensare a tours in complessi nuragigi o archeologici di derivazione fenicio-punico-romana oppure a tours gastronomici fatti in agriturismo, questo di oggi ti sembra una cosa da poco. E va beh…….

Oggi non vado in palestra perchè devo lavorare. Mi mancherà il girone dei golosi, così come il Sergente Hartman, detto anche  Roger,  che ieri mi ha fatto arrabbiare. Davvero. Perchè mi tratta come uno pronto a infilarsi in bocca un piatto di spaghetti a ogni angolo di strada. Quindi un indegno bugiardo che mente a ogni costo. Ora io dico: sto dimagrendo a vista d’occhio, vado lì ogni giorno a fare più di due ore di esercizi senza mai lamentarmi: ma che cazzo vuoi?

L’altro giorno ho visto Coaraline e la porta magica e ho avuto più paura dei bambini presenti in sala. Sto fremendo in attesa del 15 luglio, quando uscirà nelle sale Harry Potter e il Principe Mezzosangue. Li nessuno mi fermerà.

Mi sono annoiato da solo a rileggere questa roba che ho scritto. Ciao.
