Ya que se están celebrando los 50 años de existencia de la Motown, traigo una de mis favoritas del mítico sello discográfico I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch) para enfrentarla con varias versiones.

Grabada en 1965 por el famoso cuarteto vocal The Four Tops, fue número 1 como tantos otros que consiguieron a lo largo de su carrera como también lo hicieron un año después con otra impresionante canción Reach Out I’ll Be There. El característico sonido Motown se labró con canciones como esta. Las voces de los Four Tops hacen el resto, una delicia para los oídos.

En 1978 la Motown fichó a Bonnie Pointer (una de las cuatro Pointer Sisters) y dos años más tarde  hizo una versión similar aunque con un cierto toque “disco” de la época. En esto no podía desbancar a Donna Summer que fue la reina en ese género. Como dato curioso, las Pointer Sisters empezaron a ser conocidas en 1973 gracias a su single Yes We Can Can. Obama les ha plagiado?

La actriz y cantante Sylvie Vartan adaptó la canción al francés en 1967. Se tituló Garde moi dans ta poche. Su contribución fue añadir el sonido del saxo y ese aire ye-yé de una auténtica diva de aquel estilo. Casada con el rockero Johnny Hollyday, fueron la pareja de moda en los años 60-70 hasta su separación en 1980. En este video le podemos ver bailando como se hacía en esos guateques sesenteros.

Y para terminar, os dejo con una actuación en la que se junta el pasado y el presente. Y es que en el 2000 la interpretaron juntos en un escenario Anastacia y los Four Tops, que a día de hoy siguen haciendo giras a pesar de que 3 de sus miembros originales ya han fallecido. Si può uscire dalla crisi se si è perso tutto? Spogliarsi come nella pellicola sui disoccupati di Sheffield non basta più. Ci vuole il servizio completo. Un’altra storia intorno alla famiglia Usa, aggrappata a un filo, molto particolare.

C’era una volta Full Monty, il film rivelazione di Peter Cattaneso, anno 1997, nato come produzione a basso costo, premiato da 4 nomination e un Oscar, ma soprattutto diventato un fenomeno di costume. Raccontava la storia di sei disoccupati inglesi, che nella triste Sheffield, cercavano di uscire dalla crisi più nera. Per far fronte a problemi economici e alla sensazione d’inutilità e frustrazione, tentavano un po’ goffamente l’impresa di allestire uno spettacolo di spogliarello maschile. Chi non ricorda i sei proletari folgorati dallo streap tease, che improvvisano in fila per il sussidio un provino sulle note di Hot Stuff di Donna Summer?

Hung, la serie tv che va in onda stasera su SkyUno è il nuovo Full Monty, ma stavolta si è soli, e non basta spogliarsi. Per affrontare la crisi in età adulta ci vuole il “servizio completo”.

Protagonista di Hung è un uomo maturo, divorziato, in rotta con il lavoro e con sé stesso. Per la precisione, Ray Dracker (interpretato da Thomas Jane) è un’ex-promessa del basket abbandonato dalla moglie, senza una casa, che ha perso l’affidamento dei figli, ed è insoddisfatto del proprio lavoro che consiste nel fare sottopagato l’allenatore di una squadra di college a Detroit. Un disperato quindi, ma Ray è anche bello e superdotato, appunto hung, parola col doppio significato di appeso, come Ray rispetto alla sua vita.

Il sottotitolo recita «It’s hard to make an indecent living»: è difficile condurre una vita indecente. E infatti la vita di Ray è un bollettino di guerra. C’è poco da ridere se si pensa a un insegnante di ginnastica in bancarotta che si dà alla prostituzione, ma ci si prova. Ray finisce nel più classico dei corsi motivazionali che promettono il successo e l’affermazione professionale in tempi rapidi, «Tira fuori l’imprenditore che c’è in te» recita il panel. Una suggestione che si rivela efficace, anche grazie a una sua ex Tanya (Jane Adams), incontrata allo stesso seminario. E proprio Tanya che gli aveva rimproverato di avere più cm che neuroni, sarà la sua manager.
Anche nelle note stampa, la svolta viene descritta con un linguaggio che ricorda lo storytelling aggressivo e deciso dei manager che leggono Sun Tzu: «Ray resolves to take advantage of his greatest asset, in hopes of changing his fortunes in a big way».

Hung viene prodotto dalla Hbo, che già con Six feet under e i Soprano ha affrontato la crisi della famiglia americana e dei suoi pilastri. Hung sembra il rovescio della libertà di Sex and the city e chissà se ripeterà lo stesso epocale successo. Per ora la serie in Usa è andata molto bene. «Una serie tv con le palle» ha scritto Mattia Nicoletti sul sito Moob, uno degli osservatori più interessanti sulle serie tv: «la storia di un uomo al limite costretto a compiere gesti che non avrebbe mai compiuto per rimanere a galla e attaccato anche se per un filo alla famiglia». Una storia di sopravvivenza e di cambiamento «nell’Obama post Madoff», quando i talenti tradizionali non funzionano più.

In honor of Sesame Street’s 4oth birthday today, here’s an old skit that I strongly suspect may in fact be the very skit my that my mom claims was one of my absolute favorite:

It’s a disco number.  With a mirror ball.  While this is hardly me dancing around my parents’ bedroom to The Nutcracker or straddling my mother’s feather duster and pretending I was the Wicked Witch of the West, this skit is pretty much just a Donna-Summer-inspired muppet away from being yet another instance of my incredibly gay childhood. 

And for that bit of fabulous in my wee formative years, I thank you, Sesame Street.  Happy birthday!

UPDATE (11/6/09): After talking with my mother, it seems as though this is unfortunately not the specific skit I was looking for; however, it should be noted that said skit from my youth starred Bert and Ernie.  Infer from that what you will.

UPDATE (11/9/09): So this is the skit after all.  And my mother used “OMG” in her comment to confirm.  All is well in the interwebiverse.

CFCF tries to make a disco album, but doesn't remember what made disco great in the first place.

Disco gets a bad rap.  And with John Travolta in that horrible white suit, the incessant playing of the Bee Gees “Staying Alive” and those terrible, terrible dance moves, it’s easy to see why.  But hey, if Bon Jovi and Poison were the first things that came to mind when people thought of rock music, people would consign rock and roll to the same level of musical hell they now attribute to disco.

So, to defend a reviled genre, but not to bring leisure suits back, let it now be said that disco could, at times, be pretty awesome.  Seriously, listen to some Amanda Lear, Miko Mission, Donna Summer or Sylvester if you’re still questioning it.

One artist that feels similarly is Canadian producer and remixer CFCF.  On his new album, Continent, CFCF tries to both pay tribute to, and update classic disco.  The listener certainly won’t hear anthems in the vein of the aforementioned Summer, or the Bee Gees. But instead, CFCF explores disco’s darker, more contemplative side, while still trying to find a danceable groove.

The album’s standout track, “Monolith” sounds like the results of a rave held in a darkened alleyway, while “Invitation to Love”, with its cheesy synths and drumbeats, is the perfect song for when you’re just about to enter a dance club.  Unfortunately, this leads to the album’s two main problems.

For one, save for the songs just mentioned, none of the tracks are particularly memorable.  CFCF definitely creates a mood on Continent. However, he just doesn’t create many noteworthy songs, which brings about the second and most important problem – Continent isn’t really danceable.  For an album that borrows much of its vernacular from disco, CFCF forgets that most of what made the genre so great was the sense of motion inherent in all of its great singles.  Now, chillout records are fine, but Continent is trying to be a dance record, and on that standard, it fails.

Still though, it’s a fairly nice chillout record.  It works as background music and has some admirable grooves.  In the end though, CFCF tried to make a disco album, but forgot what made disco so great in the first place.

Giorgio Moroder: From Here to Eternity

Legend has it that Moroder’s mustache actually released several underground records of its own during the 80s. These are said to be extremely hard to find and worth millions of Lira. The style is apparently called ‘Hairy House’ or ‘Hirsute House’. Whichever you prefer.

“Italian-born producer Giorgio Moroder built Musicland Studio in Munich in 1969 and, with partner Pete Bellotte, proceeded to invent electronic dance music. Not only did he revolutionize the budding disco movement with his digitally powered “four-on-the-floor” bass drum pulse, but also more than any other 70s artist, he was responsible for contributing to the birth of house and techno. His productions for Donna Summer are perhaps his greatest achievements in the decade, but the apex of his solo work is 1977’s From Here to Eternity . This brilliant record glides by with the ebb and flow of a modern DJ mix, sparkling with audiophile-precise sound and arguably the finest vocoder vocals in history. The entire first side of the original LP contains five songs morphed together into one mega-mixed suite of hedonistic minimalism; when he croons, “Baby gives sweet loving, leaves me meaning nothing,” he intones the gospel for disco nymphs and club culture forever more. –Dominique Leone-Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums of the 70s”

And, that bassline is clearly the inspiration for the legendary Donna Summer sex piece I Feel Love. Which makes Eternity the father of Love. Ah, how deep…

I gotta hand it to my good friends at Trackitdown.net! They stuck with just ‘Electro’ pure and simple from 2006-2008, but then had no choice but to cave in to the genrification (ooh madam, I think I just invented a word) fad and add the House.

In September, the nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2010 was announced.

They were:

• ABBA
• The Chantels
• Jimmy Cliff
• Genesis
• The Hollies
• LL Cool J
• Darlene Love
• Laura Nyro
• Red Hot Chili Peppers
• The Stooges
• Donna Summer
• KISS

Let’s take a closer look at these 12 acts and see which 5 should get the nod.

On first blush there are 5 names that I’m going to remove from the list immediately. 

ABBA – Sorry,  I don’t care how many tickets Mamma Mia has sold, ABBA wasn’t a rock band.  They were a pop band at best and a disco band at worst. 

The Chantels – Jann Wenner has a thing for 60s girl groups.  I had to look the Chantels up.  At this point in the nominating process, that shouldn’t happen.

Laura Nyro – see above.  She’s a songwriter with a string of above average tunes to her name.  Is that really the criteria for the Hall of Fame?  That would be like putting Mariano Duncan in the baseball Hall of Fame.  He was a servicable player on some good teams, but not a Hall of Famer.  She must have slept with Jann Wenner.

Darlene Love – see above.  Another girl grouper.  But this time, mainly as a backup singer.  She was great as Danny Glover’s wife in the Lethal Weapon movies, and she’s a fine singer, but not a Hall of Famer.

Donna Summer – disco is not rock.  Sorry.  Next.

So that leaves us with:

1. Jimmy Cliff
2. Genesis
3. The Hollies
4. LL Cool J
5. Red Hot Chili Peppers
6. The Stooges
7. KISS

With 7 acts left, maybe our next step should pick out the acts that are no-brainers.

KISS – I’ve already made my case for this one as clearly as I possibly can.

The Stooges – Iggy and the boys should have been in a long time ago.  They laid the groundwork for punk, grunge, post-punk, post-grunge and ever other iteration therein.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – the California funk punks were the poster children of grunge revolution of the early 90s.  It took them nearly a decade and the death of founding member Hillel Slovak to find their groove, but once they did, they never slowed down.  They remain a vibrant and forceful band to this day.

Jimmy Cliff - Cliff’s landmark 1972 soundtrack to The Harder They Come brought reggae to the world.  Bob Marley is in the Hall.  He’d never have been there without Cliff.  Case closed.

That leaves us with 3 acts and 1 remaining slot.

The Hollies – Graham Nash got in with Crosby, Still and Nash in 1997.  There is no other reason for this nomination.  Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress and Bus Stop do not a Hall of Fame career make.  They are running out of hippie bands to put in.  I don’t think so.

LL Cool J – I like LL Cool J.  He’s a definining hip hop artist.  However, this is the ROCK and ROLL Hall of Fame.  I had no problem with the induction of Run DMC.  They are the Kings of Rock.  There is none higher.  LL will get another shot down the road, but this isn’t his year.

That leaves us with Genesis.  I’m not sure I think they belong in.  Their induction will open the door for all those other crazy English prog rock bands (yes I’m looking at you YES).  Still, they’ve  been responsible for some great music over the years. They launched the careers of Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, which I suppose makes them responsible for Groovy Kind of Love, but we won’t hold that against them. 

So, after the smoke and pyro have cleared, my picks for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2010 are:

1. KISS
2. The Stooges
3. Red Hot Chili Peppers
4. Jimmy Cliff
5. Genesis

Joss Stone foi descoberta aos 16 anos e desde lá já vendeu mais de 8 milhões de álbuns no mundo todo, foi indicada para quatro Grammy Awards, já dividiu o palco com James Brown, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Patti Labelle, Mavis Staples, Donna Summer, e Smokey Robinson. Foi entrevistada por Oprah Winfrey, protagonizou nas duas maiores campanhas da Gap e já se apresentou para mais de 200.000 pessoas, em 2005, no Live 8 Concert, em Londres – tudo isso antes de completar 19 anos.

Ficou cansado? Ela não, e está na estrada mais uma vez, agora para deixar de queixo caído com o álbum Colour Me Free.

Era il 1973 quando Barry Manilow uscì col suo album di debutto (chiamato coraggiosamente “Barry Manilow I”, evidentemente sapeva che ce ne sarebbero stati altri). Tra gli altri capolavori c’era una canzone che doveva superare perfino il successo del suo autore e primo perfomer, “Could it be magic”, che Manilow aveva scritto con Adrienne Anderson.

La bellezza di questa melodia è anche dovuta al fatto che l’autore si ispirò ad un pezzo classico, il Preludio in do minore op. 28 n.20 di Frédéric Chopin. Se ne accorse, un anno dopo la pubblicazione del singolo, nel 1976 anche Donna Summer, che ne fece una versione apertamente dance, ottenendo un successo planetario, con il suo inconfondibile stile. Il pezzo, poi, sembrava aver chiuso la sua storia con la cover nei primi anni Novanta dei Take That, anche se nel frattempo altri vi si sono cimentati (come Emile et Images, che ne fecero una versione assai melodica, Gerard Kenny con il suo stile spezzato, la latineggiante Juliana Aquino e la troppo contemporanea, poppeggiante Judy Weiss).

E invece, buon ultimo, è Valerio Scanu a riproporla, con accenti nuovi e una interpretazione che onestamente può rivaleggiare con le precedenti per intensità. Del resto, il suo attuale produttore, Charlie Rapino, legò il proprio nome, con il fratello (i famosi Rapino Brothers, così com’erano noti negli anni Novanta, a Londra, quando lavorarono anche con Kylie Minogue), al primo disco dei Take That, e proprio alla loro riproposizione di questa canzone.

Valerio ne dà una versione nuovissima, che non imita per nulla nessuna delle precedenti, anche se è direttamente ispirata a Manilow: semplice e moderna insieme, rispettosa dei limiti di una canzone nata dal pianoforte, la quale torna proprio al pianoforte grazie alla potente voce di Scanu, che, come solo lui e pochi altri possono, all’inizio arriva a contendere con lo strumento che lo sostiene e che si sostiene con lui.

Convintamente, come in altre canzoni d’amore disperate e insieme struggenti, in un unisono d’anime, come se Valerio cantasse anche per tutti noi, intorno: ne emerge una vera magia, dove l’intervento della musica (e di tutta la sua potenza di tiro) dopo la prima strofa non fa altro che esaltare un altro aspetto della voce di Valerio, quello potente e allegro. E così quando canta: “come into my arms,/ let me feel the wonder of all of you”, allora non è più malinconico, ma solo forte e intenso.

Dunque, una versione un po’ Manilow vecchia maniera, un po’ Donna Summer, un po’ Take That, nel civettuolo controcanto (“Magic, magic”), il tutto unito dalla voce tremenda di Mr. Scanu (come ormai lo chiamano tanti dei suoi ammiratori), capace di dare forza anche a questo che, forse in bocca a qualcun altro, sarebbe un pot pourri troppo indelicato.

Ecco, dunque, perché questa è la mia preferita del nuovo album di Valerio Scanu.

“…Donna Summer (born LaDonna Adrian Gaines December 31, 1948) [1] is an American singer and songwriter who gained prominence during the disco era of music, earning the title “The Queen of Disco”.

Summer was trained as a gospel singer prior to her introduction to the music industry and has always been known for her “powerhouse” vocal delivery. Though she is most notable for her disco hits, Summer’s repertoire has expanded to include contemporary R&B, rock, pop, and gospel. Did you hear the one about the girls who went to see Shakespeare performed as a soft porn disco show, and then the smoke alarms went off in the theater, so they ended up standing outside in the rain while the firemen saved the day?

That was funny.

Not funny ha-ha…funny strange.  The kind of funny where you find yourself looking around and thinking, “What the fu….?”

I had traveled all afternoon…in the rain…from New York City to Boston.  I dumped my luggage and immediately headed to Harvard Square — in the unseasonably cold wind and semi-snow — to see “The Donkey Show,” a disco version of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer’s Night Dream.”

It looked a bit like you might expect.  Big disco ball.  Polyester-clad disc jockey.  Male dancers in glitter and maniacal grins and little else, swishing about.  A few unidentified costumed fancies who must be disco Shakespeareans.  And lots and lots of forced gaiety.

Then, the smoke alarms sounded.  The house lights came up, exposing the inherent shabbiness of the stage.  The disc jockey was suddenly serious as he directed us out of the nearest exit.  People stopped at coat check — coat check! — when a fire was supposedly raging inside.  (It wasn’t…but still.)

And as we stood in the cold rain, I couldn’t help but notice that everyone had returned to normal in the street.  No strobe lights to inspire sudden hip gyrations.  No Donna Summers anthem to prompt leaping upon tables or railings.  No wood nymph on roller skates to — well, to make you proud not to be starring in disco soft porn.

I almost hitched a ride with the fire department.
