In a new feature, I will post covers of songs by various artists. I’ll try them as varied and rare as possible, but i’m sure alot of you would of heard them. If not… shame on you!

To start things of we have a cover off the Echo & The Bunnymen song The Killing Moon by Pavement… you know the song, the one of the beginning of Donnie Darko.

Der Film spielt im Oktober 1988. Donnie Darko ist ein intelligenter und kreativer, aber psychisch labiler Teenager, der mit seiner Familie  in einer Kleinstadt in Virginia lebt. Er ist in psychologischer und medikamentöser Behandlung. In der Nacht des 2. Oktobers stürzt das Triebwerk eines Flugzeuges auf das Haus seiner Familie und trifft genau Donnies Zimmer. Donnie überlebt, weil er sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht in seinem Bett befindet sondern gerade schlafwandelt. In der Nacht zuvor erschien ihm ein lebensgroßes Wesen  in einem Hasenkostüm namens „Frank“. „Frank“ hatte Donnie dazu gebracht, das Haus zu verlassen. In der Morgendämmerung erwacht er nur in Boxershorts auf einem Golfplatz. Als Donnie nach Hause zurückkehrt, wird das Flugzeugteil gerade aus seinem Zimmer entfernt.

Donnie hat weitere Visionen von Frank, der dabei meist in Rätseln spricht. Er prophezeit ihm das Ende der Welt, welches in 28 Tagen, 6 Stunden, 42 Minuten und 12 Sekunden eintreten soll…

Der Trailer:

Am 26. Oktober 2001 startete das Regiedebüt des US-amerikanischen Regisseurs Richard Kelly in den amerikanischen Kinos. Der Film ist ein teils satirisch angehauchter Highschool-Science-Fiction-Film. Viele Handlungsstränge laufen im Film parallel ab und verbinden sich erst am Ende zu einem Ganzen.

Laut den Deutungen des Regisseurs Richard Kelly bildet sich beim Aufprall des Triebwerks  ein „Tangentenuniversum“, eine instabile Art von Paralleluniversum, das nach der von Frank angegebenen Zeitspanne einen Tag vor Halloween kollabiert und sich selbst, aber auch das „reale“ Universum zerstört. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt spielt der Film im Tangentenuniversum. Donnie ist der „Auserwählte“, der durch jenes Ereignis besondere Fähigkeiten verliehen bekommen hat. Frank und Gretchen können mit Donnie durch das Konstrukt der vierten Dimension in Verbindung treten. Auch alle anderen Personen um Donnie sind „manipuliert“, sie haben die Aufgabe, ihn durch verschiedene Aussagen und Handlungen dazu zu bewegen, das Tangentenuniversum wieder zu schließen. Die aus Metall bestehende Turbine dient als Artefakt, welche sich zwischen dem Tangentenuniversum und dem Primäruniversum bewegen kann. Donnie opfert sich so am Ende selbst, um alle anderen – insbesondere die im Tangentenuniversum „gestorbenen“ Frank und Gretchen – zu retten.

Well lets start with the beginning of my day two days ago… I had to get up at five am and had to be to work at six thirty am. I’m not much of a morning person and for some reason it seems that I can never sleep on the days I have to get up early so I was very very tired. I worked until two thirty pm and managed to finally get home. I got an email from a lady who was trying to get rid of some plants and pots so I figured that Donnie and I could go there and pick a few up. I brought Donnie in case there was anything I couldn’t handle. We got to the house with no issues and we began the task of picking out what plants I wanted. She had so many plants it was unimaginable. I imagined that I would be the same someday when I finally get my own house so I will have to take that into consideration and try to show some moderation if that day ever does happen. She tried very hard to get us to take any and even all the plants when I just don’t have the room for them.

I am actually going to gift three or four of them to friends since I did in fact still got too many. I even have a few that I have to identify and learn how to care for so I will be busy for a week or so figuring out placement and watering habits of my new additions. Now I’m sure any of you who are reading my post are starting to wonder about the title of my post and what it has to do with collecting plants. Well… I’ll tell you. As we were loading up the plants into my car I was bringing Donnie two plants to load up when my foot landed wrong on the uneven part of the cement driveway and I fell down. The plants went flying and I had to quickly throw my hands in front of me to save my face. I ended up with a bloody hand, dirt all over me, my knees hurting and one of them completely scraped of any skin and beginning to swell, and any of my pride going out the window.

Donnie was very worried about me and I tried to shrug it off but it hurt like a mother F***er. We finished loading up the plants and went to the mall since the day was cool and the plants could be left in the car for a few hours and we walked around for almost two hours and finally we were back in the car heading home. I was quite thankful for this because my knee was starting to hurt a lot. Donnie promised I’d be sore the next day and I sure was. I only had to work four hours but it felt longer than that. Every time I touched something with my bad hand my hand would hurt and then be sore for a bit.

Today, I still feel sore all over. I never realized how sore you get from just a fall. I’d like to hear your stories and what you had to go through while you were healing.

Today I have to go to work again but this time for a full day shift and I’m not looking forward to it. I know I am suppose to be fast and get customers through my line as fast as possible. But today I think I’ll take it easy so I don’t make myself worse. In the meantime… Is anyone interested in a Sago Palm?

Donnie Darko Movie Poster

Donnie Darko, the dark and surreal film, had a fitting movie poster.  There are several design features that help to convey the tone of the movie, the actors in the movie and the motif.

The emphasis of the poster is the impression of a rabbit’s head (for fans of the movie, his name is Frank).  The rabbit seems sinister– skull-like and smiling.  The blueish color is ghostlike and cold.  The viewers eye is drawn to the rabbit because the background is a simple black.

When a viewer looks closer, the onlooker realizes the rabbit is composed of many pictures.  The actor’s faces are arranged to meld into the rabbit image.  The sharpest picture is the one right about the rabbit’s left eye– it is of the main character.  The others are blurrier and softer.  The effect emphasizes Jake Gyllenhaal among the other actors and actresses.

The next object on the emphasis hierarchy is the title of the movie.  “Donnie Darko” is written with an intriguing typography.  It blends several techniques together.  The font has serifs, which are usually used to depict more formal text.  The words have a wave in them (look at the bottom of the letters– they aren’t straight).  I think this gives it a sense of movement.    The words are also blurred in the background (a blurry shadow).  It makes the text seen rather dynamic.  I also think its interesting that the text is the only thing that is white in the entire picture– but the text is so narrow that it’s focus is secondary to the rabbit.

At the bottom is the legalese.  It’s written in a grey, low-contrast font and boxy letters that seem blend the writing together.  An onlooker doesn’t really read it. Plus, audiences expect the legalese to be at the bottom– so they have experience ignoring the tiny writing at the bottom.

On the whole, this is a very effective poster.  The image of the rabbit sticks with a viewer.

The Kyoti family were spending a lot of time in their garden of late.  Joanna had taken on the role of caring of the money trees.

Rae was enjoying working shorter hours, and spent a lot of time playing chess or chatting to her many friends on the computer.

Nicola was celebrating getting to level nine of the Criminal career by cooking up a big pile of hot dogs.

And Jono was taking a new approach to the idea of sucking up to the boss… by asking her to become his girlfriend.  It clearly worked, though, as on that evening’s shift, he was also promoted to level nine.

Love was clearly in the air.  Gemma and Donnie were engaging in some bathroom romancing at long last.  They had begun to start to spend more time together and were discovering that they genuinely did like one another.  Neither would day theirs was a grand passion, but it was beginning to feel more like a loving companionship.

Eventually, Gemma was able to lure him back into the heirs’ bedroom to finally consumate their union…

…and this time she succeeded.

Buoyed up by love and inspired by the rest of the family’s enjoyment of the garden, Donnie decided to go for a swim.  He wasn’t a strong swimmer, and was feeling a bit peckish, but he’d heard you should never swim on a full stomach.

He got so carried away that he swam for hours, finding that the cool water helped him organise his thoughts.  He now understood why his brother-in-law, Jono, spent so much time swimming.  Donnie swam and swam, well into the night.

By now, it had been a long time since Donnie had eaten anything, and he was feeling faint.  He started to try to get out of the pool, but he was in very deep, and found himself weakened from hunger and trapped by his heavy clothes.

Donnie Kyoti reached out for help… but instead, the water took him under.

Joanna heard a splash and came out to see what was going on – only to find an old familiar figure by the poolside.

Donnie pleaded with the Grim Reaper to spare him, but Grimmy was having none of it.  Joanna screamed for her sister to come, quickly.

Gemma stopped still in her tracks at the sight of her husband’s ghost.  What had happened?  She felt a weird mix of  emotions: a sense of freedom mixed with shock, a sense of fulfilment mixed with sadness.  But most of all, Gemma Kyoti just felt sick.

The Grim Reaper looked at the young widow.  He’d taken her husband and that had satisfied him greatly, but as he watched her, for a split second he was almost moved, especially as he could see what she had to face now.  Just for her, for the time being, he decided to leave this family in peace.

All Alfie Win Kyoti wanted for his birthday was a party that didn’t go wrong.

Unfortunately the influence of his big sister Gemma and big brother Seth had rubbed off on him, and he grew up with the same neuroses they had about Nicola and Jono…

He was ready to leave home and escape from his evil siblings, but before he did that he needed Joanna to paint his portrait.  He made very sure they weren’t lurking, waiting to scare him… and then he did what he needed to before striking out and moving on.

Joanna felt honoured to be painting her little brother’s portait.  She knew her dad would have wanted to do it and she felt she was carrying on a little piece of his legacy by making sure Alfie Win’s face joined the rest of the family portraits in the heirs’ bedroom.

Alfie Win probably got out at a good moment, as both Nicola and Jono were continuing to rise fast up the ranks of the criminal underclass…

…although Nicola found the animal ear disguise more ‘disturbing’ than ‘evil’.

She also took up art as a hobby.  Most of her paintings had the familiar red glow the family’s other evil painters had used, but occasionally she painted things that harked back to her heartbreaker days.

Joanna was still plugging away at the police work, and her cunning chef disguise finally fooled someone into agreeing to be interviewed by her.

As for newlywed Gemma and Donnie, they slept in the same bed… but beyond that they didn’t communicate a great deal.  Gemma was simply secure in the knowledge she was now comfortably off for life.

Rae was so pleased that one of her six children had finally married, and she told Gemma so.  Gemma received her mother’s affection, but her mind was firmly fixed on one thing… and it wasn’t how attractive she found her new husband.

She thought she really ought to make more of an effort with her marriage, though, and so she took Donnie into the heirs’ bedroom to finally consummate their marriage.  She hoped the luck of the room would rub off on both of them and that maybe she could conceive the child she needed to become the new heir.

But tonight wasn’t to be their night.  Maybe Gemma’s theory about their marriage being doomed had some substance to it…

After taking Michael Kyoti, the Grim Reaper wandered upstairs and started chatting to Joanna and Nicola about his relationship with the family and how much he was going to enjoy reaping souls at their parties, and he looked forward to seeeing a lot more of whichever Kyoti triplet became the heir in the future.  It was the first time the girls had ever really considered the whole heirdom issue.  They’d known for a while that one of the three of them would have that responsibility in the end, but none of them had ever really thought much about whom it might end up being.

Joanna decided to take her responsibility to the family seriously and went out looking for potential mates.  She didn’t have a great deal of success.  The neighbour across the road threatened to punch her…

…and her friend-seeking mission to the park was hindered by her unique choice of spot to play in.

Nicola, meanwhile, had had her fair share of loving, and whilst the idea of being head of the household was tantalising, there was one small problem – she couldn’t imagine the Emperor of Evil (which she was hoping to become) walking around covered in baby sick.

Their sister Gemma seemed a more likely target, but since her last boyfriend had died, she hadn’t had much chance of romance either.  The girls’ mother, Rae, decided to do something to help Gemma.  Now she had reached the top of the medical  profession she would have more time on her hands and she needed something to do to take away the pain of losing her beloved Michael.  She had met a guy a while ago whom she thought might be Gemma’s type.  He was rich, single, and, um, “quirky”.

Donnie Sawyer had a strange habit of talking to himself when he thought no-one was looking (and sometimes even when he knew they were).  He was somewhat unconventional, but he was harmless enough.

Rae invited Donnie round and made herself scarce whilst he and Gemma tried to bond over juice.  They talked about their interests and their fears.  Donnie was obsessed with the evil bunnies that lurked in the bushes waiting to eat you.  Gemma wasn’t impressed.  She  may have had her neuroses, but this guy was a total fruitloop.

Whenever Donnie came to visit, he would inevitably end up playing the guitar and dreaming of becoming a rock star…

…whilst Gemma was getting into novel writing.  Her latest work, ‘Gemma Quest’ was going very well indeed.

Eventually they found themselves in the bathroom-home of all flirting and romance-at the same time as each other, but Donnie spoiled the mood by having a little accident.

Fed up of their inability to connect, Rae asked Donnie to move in with the family, hoping that eventually he and Gemma would pair off.  Donnie began working towards his dream of being a rock star by getting a job in the music industry.  It was the first job he’d ever had – he was rich and a bit of a couch potato and hadn’t really ever motivated himself before.

Learning that Donnie was a couch potato like her intrigued Gemma and she wondered if maybe they had more in common than she’d first thought.  And of course, he was rich, which was a good thing – all she had wanted was to live off a rich man rather than getting a job, and that was becoming a pressing need.  Since Michael passed on, things were a little troubled in terms of the Kyoti household finances.

They’d been so busy grieving that they missed a bill payment and had their lamp repossessed.

And young Alfie Win became the first Kyoti teenager in a long time to take on a part-time job to help out, although he didn’t exactly enjoy working at the spa too much.

He did like Donnie, though, as did Joanna.  Gemma looked at the way Donnie got on with her siblings (and was hated by the evil alien replicants Jono and Nicola) and she started to think more about whether he was a serious marriage prospect.

Some more bathroom flirting ensued…

…and eventually they shared their first kiss.

Seizing the moment, Gemma decided to propose to Donnie.

Donnie refused.

Gemma stormed off, unimpressed.  This guy was behaving like a bit of a jerk.  She had been beginning to find him somewhat attractive, and the feeling was reciprocated, but there was something holding him back – and if she was honest, something was holding her back, too.

Over breakfast the next morning she contemplated what to do – should she really marry a man where there was no particular ’spark’ between them?  But as Alfie Win chatted about longing for another new car, she realised having ‘the spark’ wasn’t what really mattered.  Donnie was a bit annoying, but he wasn’t a bad man, and there were even some things about him she liked – he could watch TV with her, and he was pretty good on a guitar.  They could be friends, they may even become really close over time.  And he was rich, which was the most important thing.

She proposed yet again, and this time he accepted.  They set the wedding for the next day and booked the park across the street.

The day didn’t get off to a flying start when the family got word that Harry Kyoti had died, but hey, death becomes a Kyoti party, so the show must go on.

Gemma carrying a half mixed bowl of waffle batter to the ceremony wasn’t a fabulous omen, mind you.

When the lovebirds arrived, they discovered their guests dispersed all over the large park.  The guests seemed more interested in chatting to each other than in celebrating the marriage.  Some guy calling himself “The Ninth Doctor” kept hanging around and shouting randomly in the background.  It all felt rather less than romantic.

Still, the couple started to hold hands and as they looked into each other’s eyes, they prepared to make their vows (even if Gemma’s brother Seth was looking away from them).

But, of course, Gemma’s mobile phone went off at the opportune moment with a fabulous opportunity to mend a friend’s stereo which she couldn’t resist.

They were ready to start again, but Gemma got hungry and demanded Jono whip the batter for the waffles for her before she proceeded.

Jono then had to go to work, and Rae was left holding the waffle pan ready to take home to cook.  In the meantime, all the guests left, bemused that they hadn’t actually witnessed any nuptials.

Gemma and Donnie decided to use their his’n'hers moodlet managers to get themselves back in the mood whilst Rae went home to cook the celebratory waffles.

As night fell, Gemma and Donnie had their own private wedding under the stars… and came home to the news that Gemma’s aunt Emma Mabel had died just after leaving the ‘ceremony’.  Gemma started to panic… were the fates against this marriage?

My Damn Channel

……………for waffles…. & grits!

When we finally got into the WH, there were very few fans and I can just about garuntee that NONE of them were as sure as us that NKOTB were actually coming. There were two older men sitting in a booth and they started asking us what was going on and why we were all there. I ordered a chocolate chip waffle but I literally only ate 1/4 of it because my nerves were already shot at that point.

Then, they guys started to make fun of the NKOTB and instead of arguing with them, I decided ignoring them was the best idea…. (Not real sure how I managed to take the high road for once.) We kept twittering JK and he assured us that they would be there VERY SHORTLY.

After we had been there a while, we suddenly saw several tour buses pulling into the parking lot next to the WH. The population of the WH suddenly exploded and there were now about 35 screaming women waiting for what seeemed like forever until the guys got off of the buses. A couple JBWKZ came in first and unfortunately not too many people noticed them. But I said “Hi” and told them they are amazing, even more so close up.

Donnie must have been looking in the wrong direction or something because he tweeted that there didn’t look like anyone was at the WH and he figured it would be a quiet night. He was freakin WRONG!

In true Pittsburgh fashion, with red plastic cups, Donnie, Danny and JK came walking across the parking lot and into the WH. YouTube is full of videos of them coming in that the people who were with them shot. From the moment they walked into the WH, the party was on!

“When I say Waffle, you say house!”……”when I say grits, you say cheese!”

At this point, the people who work with the New Kids and the New Kids kids were tucked safely into the corder and Donnie, Jordan and Danny were now standing in the booths, ontop of the counters and filming all of us filming them. Then God Bless whoever had the idea to bring a radio into the WH….

Donnie started the music and before we knew it, there was a whole new concert going on. Donnie was playing DJ…..Jordan was jumping around on both sides of the counters filming the fans and the WH employees…. Danny didn’t have enough room to break dance so he watched the kids and probably ordered them something healthy to eat. Joey and Jon must be alittle too reserved for the WH gatherings.

I don’t know if the guys intended on playing so much music but after Click, Click, Click Donnie realized that we were not going to let them just sit down and eat. At this point people were standing all over the chairs, the booths, the counters and the tables. Donnie asked what we wanted to hear next…..the general consensus was Dirty Dancing or Sexify My Love. But Ddub had other ideas. So we sang Dirty Waffles and Sexify My Grits.

At some point in this crazyness I took my phone out to call Maria again and saw that Jon had tweeted and I literally laughed out loud and wished that Jon was in the WH too. He said something along the lines of: “If I didn’t see it for myself I would never believe that Ddub, Danny and JK have girls dancing on tables inside a Waffle House.” Hilarious!! I heart Jon.

There was a breif point where the guys sat down and scarfed some food quickly. The music never stopped however and we actually became the ones giving them the concert. After eating some food, the guys started to enjoy the crowd again. Danny stayed pretty much in the corner with the kids but Ddub and JK were all over. They were walking through the crowd and shaking hands and taking pictures with everyone.

And of course JK recognized “Legs” and had to wipe the sweat off his forehead when he recognized her. The mini concert probably lasted about an hour until the guys invited all of us to follow them to Jones Beach for the next show. If I wasn’t afraid of running out of vacation time, I probably would have followed them and enjoyed that show too!

By the time they left, Lauren and I had each gotten a picture with JK and I got mine with Donnie. He also complemeted Lauren’s shirt and hugged her after she took our picture. Little jealous. Hahaha.

This is by far the longest post ever so all the other side notes will just be coming in their own little posts because I am appaled by how much I have written today!

My second little sidebar about the night of the concert has the same theme as the first : Jordan <3’s>

………. and we’re coming to get it Waffle House!

Leaving the concert was truly an out of body experience for me. I don’t remember much of the details because all I knew was that we were DEFINATELY going to hang out and eat some waffles with the New Kids.

We kissed our umbrellas, that were with security, goodbye and we made it out of Star Lake in record time. Honestly I never remember getting out of the parking lot in under 45 minutes but I swear we were out in 10. And surprisingly I didn’t even have to drive over anyone.

Luckily I had dated a guy named Tim who worked by the Waffle House in Washington Pa because that was the only reason that I even knew we had WH’s in Pittsburgh. So with the help of a GPS, we were on our way to get some waffles and all I could think about was (hopefully) taking a picture with Donnie and I was sure Lauren was going to get her hands on Jordan.

I have to take this moment to thank those people who made it possible for nearly all of us to have a navigation system in the car. Stalking celebrities is so much easier this way!

It was a longer drive than I thought it would be to the Waffle House but we made it. We were still screeching about the concert, remembering each moment of the M&G and concert, and still listening to their music. Lauren called her mom, and the call dropped 12 times while we rode through what I’ll politely call “less-urban” areas but we kept calling her back and she told us we were nuts for thinking they were actually going to show up at the WH.

Nevertheless, we arrived at the Waffle House about 45 minutes after the concert and I started to realize that if they were coming, they were probably a good bit behind us. I’m guessing it takes a while to get everyone ready to move but we were not leaving that WH. We were the first car in the parking lot so we stayed put because we really didn’t know what else to do at that point. It seemed as if we might actually be the only ones on the right track for the New Kids……

Yea right! But this is when the night started to get interesting!

…..cus meet & greets have free alcohol and celebrities to meet!

As soon as we got to Starlake, it was time to stand in line to get into the Meet & Greet. We had never done this before. Luckily, the DoubleMint twins were infront of us in line and filled us in on the details.

Their advice:
- RUN to the one you want to talk to
- DON’T let anyone get infront of you
- TRY to kiss them all….One of the DT’s had managed that at their last M&G experience.

It seemed like hours that we were standing in line waiting to get in but finally we got up to the sign in tent and handed over our cameras (they gave them back before the concert started) and we got our goodie bags. Contents: A beach towel with the tour dates, Sunscreen on a clippy, Cherry Chapstik with their picture and finally….. NKOTB boy short panties.

It was fantastic….only problem is they were tiny. I’m sure they were expecting dirty pictures of women wearing them after the concert and decided that only the girls that should be in those pictures would fit in the panties! hahaha….

We finally got inside, got a few beers and patiently waited for the boys to arrive. After about 20 minutes Donnie tweeted that he was walking into the M&G in the Steel City and the place went nuts!!!!! Then he walked out from behind the screen they were standing behind and started high fiving people. Other NKOTB’s were reaching up and over the screen and trying to jump up and see the fans.

Well, from what I can remember, the beer was flowing (extremely freely) and I figured eating any food and soaking up the alcohol would just be a terrible decision so I drank until we reached letter N and it was our turn with the guys. The DoubleMint Twins were actually in the M&G with us and the four of us were the first ones in the room. Like clockwork, we all stood our ground and got the boys we wanted. There may have been some pushing but we managed to be in place for the photos….Until a rouge Donnie fan ran in at the end and he put his arm around her instead of me…

Bitch.
