They were standing beside his car, outside of her house, when I saw them. They seemed to be arguing. She was crying. It looked like she was pleading with him. Did she ask him not to leave? Was she asking him not to hurt her again? I’ll never know. He grabbed her by the shoulders and started shaking her. The only words I heard clearly were “I’m sorry.”

But it was she who spoke them.

As soon as I heard that, I ran over to where the two of them were standing. I used all of my weight and force and flung him against the car. “What the hell is wrong with you?” I shouted in his face. He looked wildly from side to side, searching for a way out. But I didn’t give him one. I put my hand to his throat. “Listen to me, you bastard. I don’t care what your parents taught you in your sick little household, but you’d better not lay a finger on her ever again. And if I see you around here again, I swear to God I’ll call the cops.” I took her arm and lead her back into her house. She was crying. “It’s going to be all right,” I whispered, “He’ll never bother you again, I’ll make sure of it.”

I don’t know why I didn’t do that. Instead, I turned around, walked back into my house, and shut the door. I could still hear them yelling outside. Eventually, they stopped. I heard his tires squeal as he pulled out of the driveway. Then everything was quiet.

…pentru că nu mai are despre ce scrie. Artista a spus că decizia este “pe termen lung şi nedefinit” însă nu renunţă la ideea de a cânta. “Am nevoie de o pauză. Sunt în lumea muzicii de mai bine de cinci ani, timp în care am scris despre mai tot ce s-a petrecut în viaţa mea. Cred că este timpul să iau o pauză şi să trăiesc şi alte momente”, a spus Lily Allen.

Best Music anunţă câştigătorii Q Awards. Printre ei şi micuţa Lily, despre care am scris mai sus, şi Muse care au primit trofeul “Best Act in the World Today”. So true!!!

Silverchair - Young Modern

Ok, eu era uma criança. Não lembro bem as circunstâncias, só sei que pessoas com quinze anos musicalmente não passam de crianças. Sem exceções.

Nesses tal quinze anos, não lembro de quem*, ganhei alguns cd’s. Dois especificamente: Tragic Kingdom, do No Doubt, e Freak Show, do Silverchair. Como toda criança de quinze anos, dessas duas bandas me encantavam apenas “Don’t Speak” e “Miss your love”. Claro que comecei a ouvir outras coisas, de ambos. Com o No Doubt eu comecei a falar de Ska, mas nessa época isso não ganhava muitas meninas.

O Silverchair, no entanto, me rendeu mais histórias. Rendeu, por exemplo, uma trilha sonora muito boa numa fase amorosa complicada e extremamente divertida, dividido entre dois amores. Bons tempos aqueles…

Rendeu mais coisas. Uma conversa despretensiosa sobre Silverchair no mIRC virou um namoro tempos depois. O Silverchair animou bem uma noite pré-vestibular em plena João Pessoa.

E dessas duas descobertas musicais na era pueril, a que se desenvolveu de verdade foi a do Silverchair. Não virei fã, e a essa altura as duas vezes em que eles tocaram no Brasil já tinham se passado. Mas vieram bons discos. O Neon Ballroom, que eu alugava numa locadora de cd’s em Juazeiro (é, naquele tempo e lugar existiam locadoras de cd’s). O Diorama e o meu vício numa já sem graça MTV.

Esse disco que eu ganhei, passei a frente um ano depois, para queridos amigos do Especial, onde paguei quase um ano de não-cursinho. Nessa época, a do Freak Show, o Silverchair fazia um som pesado que nem era palatável o suficiente para o pós-grunge, nem pesado o suficiente para o pré-grunge. E isso pode ser o fim para uma banda que quase substituiu o Nirvana.

Era um disco que eu não gostava de ouvir. Junto a ele foram doados também o Tragic Kingdom e, pasmem, o Dookie, do Green Day**. E foi assim que o Silverchair significou algo na minha vida. Historinha sem sentido e sem graça né?

**Apesar de gostar muito das músicas, o Dookie era um disco que eu detestava ouvir. Eu o comprei numas férias em Belo Horizonte, e lembro exatamente da dúvida em que eu estava na escolha entre ele e o ~~White Flag~~ No angel, de Dido. Apesar de me arrepender amargamente de não ter escolhido o ~~White Flag~~ No angel, se eu o tivesse escolhido, sabe lá como eu seria…

Actress Lee Ji Ah recently appeared on the September 5th broadcast of SBS Kim Jung Eun’s Chocolate, her first appearance ever on a variety show. When Kim Jung Eun complimented Lee Ji Ah on her long legs, Lee responded by saying: “the secret is in insole padding.” Lee went onto explain how she was embarrassed by a scene in her drama, SBS Style, where her shoes fell off, revealing the padding. Kim Jung Eun was surprised by Lee Ji Ah’s honest manner, different from her image as an actress.

Lee Ji Ah performed No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak” along with a live band in front of an audience of 1000. In addition, she further revealed her charm through a rock performance with the band’s guitarist.

Review: No Doubt, Paramore

On its first tour in seven years, No Doubt might be packing large venues like Starlight Theatre on Monday night, but it’s playing them like a hungry band working the crowd for a place to crash afterward.

The few times the band paused during its 95-minute set, singer Gwen Stefani read the crowd’s homemade signs and called fans toting gifts up to the stage.

After tossing a sign spray-painted with a request for “Total Hate 95,” one fan was rewarded with a performance of the rare number. Later, after accepting the cross-stitched logos another fan made, a genuinely touched Stefani hauled her admirer onstage for a quick photo op.

When she wasn’t speaking to the crowd, Stefani and company were giving them exactly what they wanted: a heavy dose of the hits that made the band big in the first place. The setlist resembled the track list of the greatest hits album No Doubt released before going on hiatus, a celebration of the 11 years they’ve shared.

The opening ska bounce of “Spiderwebs” had the crowd eating out of Stefani’s hand, singing, swaying and dancing on cue. That number fell into the electro pop of “Hella Good.” The tempos may have changed throughout the night, but the energy never lagged. Through it all, Stefani was never still, dancing, spinning, jumping and unceasingly working the crowd.

The other five musicians onstage gave no evidence of any time apart. Drummer Adrian Young sat in the middle of the all-white stage, his kit the centerpiece of a six-legged platform that looked like a futuristic insect. He was flanked by multi-instrumentalists Stephen Bradley and Gabrial McNair, who handled horns, keyboards and backing vocals. Stefani, guitarist Tom Dumont and bass player Tony Kanal navigated the rest of the stage.

Behind them all, a large screen played videos during most songs. The best bits were the James Bond parody during “Ex-Girlfriend” and the homemade videos of the band’s early days accompanying the ballad “Running.”

“Don’t Speak” drew the biggest response, but it was nearly matched by “Just a Girl,” which closed the main set. As Dumont played its spidery opening riff, Stefani dropped to the floor and counted out push-ups with the crowd. After reaching 10, she sprung to her feet and launched into the verse. Both feats drew massive cheers.

One got the feeling during Paramore’s 40-minute set that the band brought as many fans as the headliners. The power pop quintet’s set was marked by a constant stream of young fans rushing as close to the stage as their parents would let them to snap a photo.

The setlist tipped heavily toward the 2007 album “Riot,” which delighted the devoted, who hung on singer Hayley Williams’ every word. The two new songs, which blended almost too well with the older material, and set-closing “Decode” from the “Twilight” soundtrack, were extra treats.

Bedouin Soundclash opened the evening with a 30-minute set.

After No Doubt returned for “Rock Steady,” Bedouin Soundclash and Paramore joined the band for “Stand and Deliver.” Nearly all of the dozen musicians onstage pounded the various drums brought out while Stefani and Williams swapped verses. No Doubt drummer Young managed to stand out in the crowd by parading around wearing only a pink-and-white tutu, marching snare drum and calf-high athletic socks.

The night ended with “Sunday Morning,” which, like so many No Doubt triumphs, hit the sweet spot between pop, ska, dance and rock. When the music ended, band members lingered onstage signing autographs, tossing souvenirs and shaking hands.

Just as they did in their native Southern California clubs a lifetime ago.

Meus discos velhos #1

Ontem, em casa de bobeira, resolvi dar uma organizada nos meus discos.
Tem muita coisa legal ali naquele monte de caixinha. Meio que periódicamente, eu acabo fazendo isso pra dar uma olhada nos meus CD’s e lembrar um pouco de coisas que a correria acaba enfraquecendo na nossa cabeça.

Nessa “organização” a primeira caixinha que eu coloquei a mão foi a do disco “Tragic Kingdom” do No Doubt. Imediatamente me sentei na cadeira do computador e botei pra tocar as músicas deste cd… no Blip.fm !

Aí você me pergunta: “Mas, Dexter! Porque você não colocou o CD pra tocar?”.
É simples. Eu não tenho mais o CD em si. A caixinha esta vazia a pelo menos uns dez anos.
Lembro de tê-lo comprado ali por volta de 1996, um anos depois de ter sido lançado. Na verdade foi um presente ganhado.

Aí você me pergunta denovo: “Então porque você não se desfaz da caixinha, Dexter?”
Acho simples de responder essa também. Não é apego material, pois, veja bem, eu NÂO TENHO o mais importante do negócio: o CD. É mais pelo valor sentimental. Por ele me lembrar de uma época legal em que eu estava descobrindo a música, a mistura de estilos e etc, só que nem percebia isso.

Hoje em dia é que entendo porquê gostava tanto deste cd. Além de ter Gwen Stefani na capa – um sonho de loira pra nenhum menino de 11 anos botar defeito – ele trazia para os meus ouvidos o Ska. Me apresentou os metais.

Mesmo tanto tempo depois, as músicas “Spiderwebs”, “Just a Girl”, “Excuse me Sr.”, “Sunday Morning” e “Don’t Speak” são praticamente impossiveis de se esquecer.

Isso tudo sem falar da nostalgia que ele traz, né?
Onze anos de idade, sem responsabilidades, só curtição e a sonzera rolando no discman, que naquela época era a sensação do momento.

Procurei há um tempo atrás para ver se encontrava o cd perdido em alguma loja, mas não dei sorte.
Sei que na web tem a venda um LP Special Edition lindão: o vinil é verde! Lindo… e caro.

Enquanto não reponho o cd, vou guardando a caixinha. Vai ficar na coleção para sempre.

No Doubt is one of the most popular bands of the 90’s and today and they’ve come back together to go on tour again! With such a unique sound and style this band is one that will live in music history forever, for not being afraid to do different things but still keep their roots. With their mega hits that range from the still popular Don’t Speak to the hair flipping Hella Good to the island-vibed Underneath It All, I am looking forward to what they have in store in the future.

O Rádio Kanastra 11 é pura nostalgia. Uma nostalgia recente, mas já bem marcante: os anos 90.

Peep Chrisette Michelle covering No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.” I have always loved this song and used to wear out my Tragic Kingdom tape (yes, cassette tape) in high school. I had a real alternative/ska/angsty period that snuggled up to my hip-hop/reggae tunes so No Doubt fit in quite nicely. Oh, and this song stands out because once I was at the skating rink with all my friends, must have been freshman year, and I got into an argument with my boyfriend at the time. I think he was talking to some other girl or whatever. Could’ve been anything back then. Anyway, our friends tried to mediate the whole thing and nothing was working. Someone requested “Don’t Speak” and since at that age we searched for meaning in every lyric of every fucking song, we were so overcome with emotion that we just had to makeup. CORNY, I know. LOL.
