Next, I would suggest putting the little amount of money that it takes into a pressure canner and related items. You could get enough equipment to get you canning for well under $150.

The final thing I would suggest for keeping you in food during a crisis situation is to buy a little extra of canned foods and water each time you go grocery shopping. You want to reach a goal of three months worth of food and water for your family. Now, I don’t mean go out and buy 50 lbs of rice and 100 cans of spam. I mean buy extra of what you already eat. During a crisis situation is not the time to completely change your diet. This could upset your digestive system as well as your immune system.

If you go and as quickly as you can purchase your generator and do the rest as you can this should allow you to be more comfortable than most in a situation and keep your family fed. Take your time, make a plan and execute that plan in a timely fashion. Remember, LEARN…..to survive!

The following are the things I consider most important for preparing for your own survival.

• There is no such thing as having too much canned food or water set aside.  If disaster strikes, grocery stores may not be available to supplement your needs.  You must maintain a minimum of 3 months worth of food and water per person.
• Yes, yes, yes you must have a sufficient amount of guns and ammunition and be well versed in their use.  You may have sufficient quantities of emergency supplies, but if others try and forcibly take them, you must be able to hold onto what you have.
• People can and will panic during disasters so avoid large crowds and any areas subject to martial law and or rioting.  Use common sense and good judgement in deciding whom to trust.
• Always keep  small amounts of cash on hand.  A disaster may render ATM’s and credit card systems useless.  If so, cash or barter may be the only ways to immediately conduct business.
• Take responsibility for your own survival.  Ability without character is useless.  Remain moral and ethical during times of crisis.
• As I constantly remind readers; stay situationally aware.  You must know what is going on around you so that dangerous people and situations cannot catch you off guard.

We have become temporarily the most successful species the Earth has produced at present, and we are dominating and destroying everything nature has provided in a natural evolutionary process of self-enhancement. That is obvious, and yet what doesn’t seem to be obvious is that our present way of life can not continue forever. The simple end point must come when energy needed to power our way of life becomes scarce. The only source of power that can survive several more doublings of human population is the sun, because all other energy sources here on Earth are finite. Present doubling time is approximately fifty years. In 1925 there were about two billion humans, and by 2025 there will be about eight billion. It seems unlikely that another one hundred years of this kind of growth could support thirty-two billion people, and therefore either people must choose to have fewer children, or Mother Nature will kill vast numbers of people. War within overabundant species is common with overcrowding, and may be considered a natural event. Willing population control is against the second law of humanity. First is to survive and the second is to reproduce. To attempt to control human population worldwide is clearly in direct opposition, not only to the theories of natural selection but to nature itself.

If we can not limit population voluntarily, and the world rebels even at the suggestion that we do so, then we must accept the soon-to-be encountered natural process of population collapse. The farming population of 1625 was only half a billion people, and population collapses will usually go well below a balancing point. Thus with eight billion people going below half a billion would mean that fifteen out of sixteen people would die during the collapse. Of course humanity will never expect that, and will refuse to consider it seriously until it is already in progress. Generally nearly everyone will be living better than they ever have right up to the collapse. The key precursor to collapse will be when there is state-organized confiscation of food.

I have been involved with projects where these types of issues have been discussed for months on end, and they never get very far because they require unpopular actions.

Film critics are often accused of being snobs. When we collectively bash a mainstream studio picture that seemingly everyone else just loves, we are seen as being stuffy and out of touch with people who just want to be entertained. More often than not, this is untrue. When a film gets a collective beatdown by the critical community, it’s usually for a very good reason. Let’s face it, if mass popularity was the yardstick by which quality was measured, the Scary Movie films would be considered classic works of art. It’s for this reason that we have critics. We often act as the vocal minority explaining why the latest Twilight movie isn’t the greatest use of film since Orson Welles uttered, “Rosebud.” But very occasionally — I stress the words “very occasionally” — film critics are snobs.

Such was the case with Doomsday. While Rogue Pictures didn’t do the film any favors by giving it a barely-there marketing push and refusing to screen it for the critics, perhaps the biggest problem was the fact that writer/director Neil Marshall was viewed by many in the critical community as “slumming it.” Coming off the critical and commercial success of the terrifying horror film The Descent, Marshall refused to meet the expectations of another smart, challenging genre film. Instead, he embraced his inner twelve-year-old and crafted a ridiculously violent mash up of horror, action, sci-fi, and comedy that was big, loud, and incredibly stupid. Yes, Marshall was slumming it, but fortunately, his slum was an extremely fun place to visit.

The film opens with a prologue narrated by Malcolm McDowell. It’s seven minutes of exposition that lays out how Scotland was decimated by the “Reaper Virus” in 2008. A sort of supercharged ebola virus that killed anyone who contracted it, the British government was unable to find a cure. Faced with the possible infection of the entire nation, the decision was made to construct a giant wall along the site of the original Hadrian’s Wall, sealing off Scotland, condemning those left behind to die. In the mad rush to escape as the last gate is closing, a little girl is rescued by some British soldiers. In the pandemonium, she is shot, losing her right eye.

The film then jumps to “the present day” — in this case, the year 2035. The little girl has grown up to become Eden Sinclair (Rhona Mitra). Equipped with a robotic eye in place of her missing one, she is now an ass-kicking Major for the U.K. State Police. When the “Reaper Virus” is discovered in a drug-infested London ghetto, Prime Minister Hatcher (Alexander Siddig) and his right hand man Canaris (David O’Hara) spring the news on the police chief/Eden’s surrogate father figure (Bob Hoskins) that satellite photos have discovered survivors in Glasgow. Assuming that survivors might mean the possibility of a cure, they send in a small military team headed by Eden to track down Kane (McDowell), a doctor who was working in Glasgow to cure the virus when the gates were closed.

All of this plot setup is just a reason for Marshall to indulge in over-the-top action and horror sequences that borrow (steal) liberally from John Carpenter’s Escape from New York, George A. Romero’s Dead series, and George Miller’s Mad Max films. Yes, it’s all incredibly derivative, and no, Marshall does not improve on the classic films he’s ripping off, but at least he steals from the best and uses the disparate parts to craft a slick action flick that is purely entertaining. In this day and age of action films with portentous tones and dour heroes, Doomsday is a refreshing alternative. Marshall plants his tongue firmly in cheek and offers up one kinetic display of action after another, dropping in just enough scenes of exposition to keep it from being completely nonsensical.

But Marshall knows the audience for this film isn’t interested in story. They want to see car chases, brutal hand-to-hand combat, shocking scenes of carnage, and severed heads flying at the camera while still screaming. He serves all of these ingredients up with gusto. Even better, in a batshit crazy turn of events, he suddenly plunges the film into a medieval side trip as the team discovers Kane living like a King in an old castle that was turned into a tourist trap at some point in the past (the sign for the gift shop still hangs on the wall). This leads to a riff on films like Gladiator and Braveheart that plays more like a straight spoof than homage. It’s a tonally bizarre twenty minutes, but it’s always entertaining.

If not for the excellent production values, technical skills of the crew, and Marshall’s eye for visual flair, Doomsday could be an ’80s Cannon film. The script, with its derivative plot, barely sketched characters, and dependence on catering to the lowest common denominator, certainly fits the bill. As does the cartoonish, loopy, anything-goes tone that is gleefully pushed well into the realms of bad taste (a cute bunny rabbit gets blown to smithereens by a robotic sentry, a man is cooked on a giant spit and devoured).

I don’t necessarily disagree with my fellow critics about the movie being stupid. The difference is that Marshall intentionally made it out to be a stupid exercise in violent, over-the-top excess. That he received such a big budget for his vision and pulled it off may be why the film failed both critically and commercially. It’s trashy and definitely not art, but comparing Doomsday to the work of Uwe Boll is beyond ridiculous. Even worse, it’s just plain snobby.

Gareth Newnham regularly writes in-depth gaming reviews to highlight the site, which are also far more insightful and usefully lengthy than the standard norm of IGN. Have you read IGN reviews lately? They are about 500 words, if we’re lucky, and there is not much there for you aside from a copy-and-pasted press release. On the other hand, the Laser Lemming Project provides reviews that explain EVERY THING in a game, and the reviews are usually more than 2,000 words. Yep, these two. Today I am focusing on the goodbye scene in Doomsday when the Doctor leaves Rose in the alternate universe. If you need to refresh your memory, here’s the video again.

Anyway, here’s my theory: if the Doctor wanted to say I love you, he would’ve said so.

I mean really, he had plenty of time to just blurt it out. Right after she said the dreaded three words, he could’ve gone something like ‘I love you too’ but he didn’t. He stalled. Go rewatch the video. See it? See the obvious stalling? See the seconds he wastes by staring at her face? SEE IT?

So yes. I think he was stalling. Why would he love her?

1. The age difference is absurd. 900+ and 19. From the start, it was sort of doomed.
2. She basically raped the TARDIS. (more on this in a future post)
3. She’s just one girl in a long chain of companions, but she can’t accept that. Look at how she treats Reinette, Sarah Jane, Jabe, and everyone else. No.
4. She built a dimension cannon, even when the Doctor TOLD HER NOT TO.
5. She doesn’t care if universes will collapse, she just wants some huggytime. Excuse me, I live in one of those universes. I don’t particularly want to die.
6. NO.
7. NO.
8. No.

As you can see, I am not a shipper of Rose/anyone. I think she was a bad companion, but I’ll talk about that in a different post.

And that’s basically it. In summary: the Doctor was probably stalling when he said goodbye and I don’t like Rose at all. Bye!

If you were worried the Mayan doomsday prediction was going to come true on Dec 21, 2012, you can now breathe easy.

Astronomer, author, and television host Dr. Phil Plait was at Humber last week presenting “We’re (Not) All Going to Die” to kick off this year’s President’s Lecture Series.

“This [Mayan doomsday] is a real phenomenon in that people are really being scared by it and that’s one of the reasons I speak out about it,” Plait told students and faculty who attended the lecture in the Seventh Semester Room on the North Campus.

Mixed with humor and scientific facts, Plait showed why the Mayan doomsday prediction simply is not going to come true. He said the 2012 scenario started because of people misinterpreting Mayan culture and Mayan math, but this is nothing new.

“Doomsday scenarios come up all the time. People should assess the information they get, especially on the internet. We need to think about things like this carefully,” he told reporters.

The President’s Lecture Series is run by a faculty committee to host informative talks from a wide variety of academic disciplines.

“It’s a lovely opportunity for people to get together and participate in public discourse,” Melanie Chaparian, President’s Lecture Series chair, said.

Chaparian said the talk was timely.

“It’s very topical because if anyone takes the notion that Dec 21 is the end of the world seriously, well we only have 11 weeks left,” she said.

Tatiana Paulin teaches astronomy and astrobiology at Humber and recommended Plait as a guest speaker.

“I wanted to highlight the science part of the Liberal Arts and Sciences department. I’ve also seen Dr. Plait present before and I knew he’d be great for presenting both good science content and make it accessible to everyone,” Paulin said.

The next lecture, “Mars and Venus, or Planet Earth: Women and Men in the New Millennium” presented by Dr. Michael Kimmel will take place on Oct. 31 in the Seventh Semester.

On the pro side the knife is large, sharp, ergonomic, comfortable and durable and both the sheath and the knife are well made.  On the con side the accessory pouch for the sharpening stone does not come with the sharpening stone; and the handle which has a designed drilled hole in it, to accomodate a wrist strap or paracord does not come with the strap or paracord.

I also found the handle to be a little too thin; but as mentioned earlier that was quickly remedied by wrapping the handle with black cloth hockey tape.  I added my own paracord by running it through the hole in the handle; and then knotted the ends and sealed them by using a lighter to keep  the cord from fraying.

Retail prices are all over the place.  On average you should pay between $25.00 and $35.00 for this knife.  I’ve seen places selling the exact same knife for $60.00.  Don’t do it.  You can find these knives for between $25.00 and $35.00 dollars.  Overall it is an excellent knife for the money.
