Sreesanth proved that aggression is not necessary for any bowler, however instinctive and unintentional it may be. And so is sledging. The best way is to prove yourself as a bowler is to take wickets like he did at Kanpur.

And then there was the unexpected announcement that the government is serious about age cheaters. That the tampering of school and birth certificates to ensure big fishes level in the pond meant for smaller players, will be considered as serious as doping was very heartening. Now if only intentions were horses.

Although Claudia Pechstein has finally been banned by the highest court in sport (CAS) she does not give in. Today, the news arrived that she will fight against the ruling in order to compete at the Vancouver Olympics 2010.

And indeed, Pechstein and her lawyer, Simon Bergmann, found some contradictions in the offical papers: A large, complicatly formulated draft of the WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) seems to be placed wrong by the judges. It is the “Athlete Biological Passport Operating Guidelines”, a suggestion of how the International Sport Federations should treat abnormalities in an athlete´s blood. But the draft is from October 2009, so I could not be available to the International Speed Skating Union when they banned Pechstein in July. However, the judges still mentioned the document although they also state that the draft is only an orientation (Point 118, see the official document in yesterdays post). But Pechstein is still upset because the judges only used a draft and her feelings got enforced today after the WADA announced to implement the new guidelines next week.

But, let´s be honest, although Pechstein seems to have found a contradiction in her ruling, she will not repeal her verdict. The only thing she will probably achieve is that she will also ruin her reputation if she has not done so already. Just to remember you: Pechstein has been banned because there were abnormalities in her blood not only once but several times!The three judges gave her the written verdict that she has been banned because her abnormalities could only result from manipulation of her own blood.

It is a pity that athletes like Claudia Pechstein do not face the fact that they have used illegal substances or, like in this case, done blood transfusions with her own blood. The mentality of  “I´m sure my lawyer will help me” does not help herself nor sport. It is about time that athletes step forward, admit their mistakes and help to identify the backers. We need clean sport and this is only possible with the support of the athletes!

Manzano era um mentiroso?

Jesús Manzano era um mentiroso em 2004, recordam? Refrescarei a memória dos esquecidinhos sobre o que contei ao AS: “Em junho de 2003, Walter Virú tirou-me um litro de sangue enriquecido com EPO em Valencia e dividiu em duas bolsas. Uma delas injetei nas vésperar do Tour. Antes de uma etapa de montanha me medicou com Oxiglobin, uma hemoglobina para cachorros. Ia escapado com Virenque e comecei a me sentir muito mal. Me retirei e me levaram ao hospital: ali, o defundo Joan Mas me disse ‘não conte nada, na França nos metem na cadeia’. À noite, no hotel, estava inchado como uma bola. Quando voltei à Espanha, Virú me telefonou e me disse: ‘Vicente Belda quer que coloque a outra bolsa’. Não tinha colocado nem a metade quando senti calafrios. Me deram Urbason e me colocaram no trem de volta a Madrid, mas achei que ia morrer.

Ontem, vários periódicos que haviam me atacado, ignorado ou me chamado de mentiroso escreviam coisas como “Manzano já falou de Virú em 2004″. Algum me telefona agora e atendo por educação. Ao final, parece que Jesús Manzano já não é tão mentiroso.

In der Ausgabe der Westfälischen Nachrichten vom 27. November 2009 ist ein Interview mit dem Kölner Doping-Experten Professor Fritz Sörgel abgedruckt. Darin äußert er sich über die Zukunft des Kampfes gegen Doping. Laut Sörgel gehöre dem Nachweis von Körpereiweißen, die sich durch die Einnahme von leistungssteigernden Stoffen verändern, die Zukunft.

Dieser Nachweis werde aber sehr teuer sein, sagt Sörgel und antwortet auf die Frage nach der Finanzierung, dass der Sport-Fan diese über den Ticketpreis leisten müsse. „Dann muss sich der Besucher von Sportveranstaltungen eben überlegen, ob es ihm das noch wert ist“, so der Doping-Experte im Interview.

Das würde im Umkehrschluss bedeuten, dass ich dem Doping freien Lauf lasse, wenn ich nicht zu Sportveranstaltungen gehe. Denn dann hätten die Dopinggegner ja nicht genügend Geld, um Doping nachzuweisen. Das Interesse an einer Sportart würde durch hohe Ticketpreise auch nicht gesenkt werden. Bestes Beispiel: die Leichtathletik-WM in Berlin. Geht der Fan nicht ins Stadion, holt ihn der Sport vor der Flimmerkiste ab. Eine hohe Attraktivität bei der Masse verspricht hohe Werbeeinnahmen für die Sportler, was wiederum Doping begünstigt. Oder sollen auch die GEZ- und Pay-TV-Gebühr für den Kampf gegen Doping steigen?

Eigentlich müsste es eine Abstrafung durch den Zuschauer sein, wenn er wegen zu vieler Dopingfälle einer Sportart fernbleibt. Brent Spa wurde deshalb nicht in der Nordsee versenkt, weil niemand mehr bei BP getankt hat und nicht, weil jemand die Spritpreise erhöht hat, um die Mehreinnahmen zum Abbau der Offshore-Lagerstation zu nutzen.

Lieber Professor Sörgel, mein Vorschlag wäre, dass die Hochleistungssportler den Dopingkampf finanzieren sollen. Das wäre zu ihrem eigenen Vorteil. Denn so würden sie einerseits die Konkurrenz los, die sich, uns und ihren Sport betrügen und andererseits würden sie ein Zeichen dafür setzen, wie wichtig ihnen ein sauberer Sport ist.

Das Urteil des internationalen Sportgerichtshof CAS im Fall Claudia Pechstein wird in der Presse einhellig als Meilenstein im Kampf gegen Doping bezeichnet. Der Indizienbeweis reicht nun aus, um positiv getestete Sportler zu verurteilen. Bei vielen Sportverbänden werden jetzt die Schubladen geöffnet und der Staub von lang angelegten Listen gepustet, die die Namen verdächtiger Sportler aufzählen, denen bisher ein direkter Beweis des Dopings nicht angelastet werden konnte. Nun seid ihr alle fällig, ihr Betrüger am Sport!

Oder vielleicht doch nicht? Immerhin geht es auch um den Ruf der Verbände und nicht zuletzt um Geld. Wer seinen Posten in den Chefsesseln der Sportfunktionäre nicht verlieren will, darf nicht den Eindruck und schon gar nicht den Beweis aufkommen lassen, sein Sport sei vom Doping unterwandert.

Die Tour de France hat es vorgemacht. Das Interesse des Zuschauers ist nach all den Doping-Skandalen gesunken und damit auch die TV-Einnahmen. Kann sich das die Fina oder der IAAF erlauben? Sicher, die Frage dürfte gar nicht gestellt werden, denn eigentlich müssen sich die Verbände für einen sauberen Sport einsetzen. Aber wer schreit laut „Hier!“, wenn die Karre einmal im Dreck festsitzt?

Nach dem Urteil des internationalen Sportgerichtshof CAS bleibt Eisschnellläuferin Claudia Pechstein gesperrt, was dem Ende ihrer Karriere als Hochleistungssportlerin gleichkommt. Die SZ vom 26. November 2009 widmet sich dem Fall Pechstein auf der Titelseite gefolgt von mehreren Artikeln auf Seite 2. Nirgendwo ist aber zu lesen, dass Pechstein gedopt hat. Darf man das überhaupt nach dem Urteil sagen: Claudia Pechstein hat gedopt?

Das Urteil gründet einzig und allein auf Indizien, ein handfester, direkter Beweis des Dopings fehlt. Andererseits konnte die erfolgreichste deutsche Winter-Olympionikin den Gegenbeweis ihrer Unschuld nicht liefern. Im Sport gilt die Umkehr der Beweislast: Ein positiv getesteter Athlet muss seine Unschuld belegen. Diesen Beweis bleibt Pechstein schuldig.

Vielleicht ist die Aussage, Pechstein habe gedopt, auch rechtlich anfechtbar, trotz des CAS-Urteils nach §186 StGB eine üble Nachrede, weshalb es die SZ vermeidet, Pechstein explizit als Dopingsünderin zu bezeichnen. Die Behauptung einer Tatsache muss „erweislich wahr“ sein, damit es keine üble Nachrede ist. Ist es nun wahr, dass Claudia Pechstein gedopt hat? Frei nach Arthur Conan Doyles Romanfigur Sherlock Holmes könnte man sagen: Wenn man das Unmögliche eliminiert hat, muss das, was übrig bleibt, egal wie unwahrscheinlich, die Wahrheit sein. Ist es unmöglich, dass Pechstein nicht gedopt hat? Die CAS-Richter gingen davon aus.

No Tour de 1997  Richard Virenque não conseguiu acompanhar o ritmo de escalada de Didier Rous que colocou Jan Ullrich em dificuldades.

Já na etapa de contrarrelógio em St. Etienne, Virenque queria algo especial, uma droga misteriosa para ir bem. Voet, o soigneur da Festina cedeu, deu-lhe uma droga e Virenque fez o segundo tempo, apesar de ser capturado por Ullrich.

“Esse material é incrível”, disse Virenque, “Temos que conseguir isso”.

Mas o desconhecido a Virenque, a droga misteriosa que Voet tinha recusado a lhe dar, “preocupado” com os efeitos secundários nada mais era do que uma simples injeção de glicose.

“Não há substituto para a auto-confiança” disse Voet. “Não havia droga mais eficaz para Richard do que o público. Algumas injeções de ‘Allez Richard’ percorrendo suas veias e o sentimento de adoração levantavam o seu limiar de dor e faziam sentir-se invencível”.

Assim era com Virenque. Assim deve ser com tantos outros que necessitam apelar para o doping.

Voet foi a pessoa presa na fronteira franco-belga com toneladas de produtos dopantes que iniciou o processo conhecido como Festina Afair.

La procura del Coni chiede tre mesi di squalifica per Bartolomeo Goitre e Luca Stefanini, coinvolti ad inizio stagione nel caso della positività del difensore bianconero di EUGENIO CAPODACQUA

ROMA – Era previsto e prevedibile. Qualcuno doveva pur pagare nella nebulosa vicenda della postività al cortisone dopo Roma-Juventus del 30 agosto di Fabio Cannavaro, storico capitano della Juventus e della nazionale, per il quale il procedimento è stato immediatamente archiviato, dopo il discusso “sopralluogo” del capo della Procura Coni, Ettore Torri a Torino nella sede bianocnera. E così è toccato ai due medici Bartolomeo Goitre e Luca Stefanini assumersi le responsabilità del mancato invio tempestivo dei documenti per l’esenzione terapeutica (la giustificazione è stata quella di una puntura di vespa durante l’allenamento due giorni prima del match). La Procura del Coni, dopo averli sentiti nell’ottobre scorso, ha deciso di deferirli per violazione dell’articolo 3.3 del regolamento antidoping. Ovvero per “la mancata collaborazione di qualunque soggetto anche non tesserato e/o di nazionalità straniera, per il rispetto delle Norme Sportive Antidoping”.

I medici non sarebbero stati diligenti nell’inviare la documentazione necessaria e per loro la richiesta è stata di tre mesi di sospensione. La violazione del regolamento prevedeva una pena da uno a sei mesi. Dunque il Procuratore capo Torri si è fermato nel giusto mezzo. Ora toccherà al Tna, al Tribunale nazionale antidoping decidere se accettare o meno la richiesta. Dunque si concluderà senza gravi scossoni quella che alcuni media hanno definito bonariamente come la battaglia di Cannavaro contro la vespa.

Di fatto la giustificazione della presenza del betametasone nel test del capitano azzurro è tecnicamente inappuntabile. Anche se restano ancora ombre sulla vicenda. Sopratutto sui tempi. Normalmente – dicono i tecnici – la quantità minima (si parla di 30ngml) per cui si risulta positivi è compatibile con una iniezione intramuscolo non più di 24 ore prima del test. E, da quanto si sa, Cannavaro l’avrebbe fatta durante l’allenamento il 28 agosto, due giorni prima del match con la Roma al termine del quale le sue provette sono risultate positive. Un test “mirato”, trapela dal Foro Italico, proprio per la richiesta di esenzione terapeutica. A sottolineare una linea severa e intransigente su questo fronte. Anche se poi con il calcio, specie quello maggiore, i problemi sono affrontati sempre con i guanti gialli. Come si è visto dalla solerzia con cui Torri, il capo della Procura, si è mosso, precipitandosi a Torino.

Dunque a Cannavaro o è stata iniettata una grande quantità del farmaco, o gli è stato fatto un “richiamo” il giorno dopo la puntura, oppure il suo fisico smaltisce il cortisone molto lentamente. Per saperne di più e allontanare ogni dubbio sarebbero occorsi test longitudinali che nessuno si è preso la briga di fare, e che adesso nessuno può più fare a quasi due mesi di distanza dal fatto. Test del tipo di quelli cui è stato sottoposto – tanto per sottolineare la differenza di metodi applicati – Danilo Di Luca prima e dopo la tappa dello Zoncolan, al Giro del 2007, per cercare di spiegare il caso della cosiddetta “pipì dell’angelo”. Nel calcio l’antidoping è visto come un fastidio, quasi una inutile e scomoda incombenza da espletare il più rapidamente possibile. Invece non sarebbe illogico approfondire il tema. Anche perché adesso c’è un precedente importante che, previa prescrizione del medico e dichiarazione (corretta) al Ceft, la commissione per l’esenzione terapeutica, praticamente legalizza l’uso del cortisone nello sport.

Walter Viru, the Peruvian former Kelme team doctor during  Alejandro Valverde’s time with the team is at the centre of the latest doping scandal.  Sadly Javier Ochoa is also implicated.

Brothers Javier and Ricardo Ochoa were Kelme riders in February 2001 when they were hit by a motor vehicle while training near Malaga. Ricardo did not survive and  Javier was for months in a coma and was left with brain damage.  In 2004 he took part in the Paralympics.  Another 2004 Olympic athlete under suspicion is race walker Paquillo Fernandez who took the silver medal. How does a race walker fund doping products? I am surprised they earn enough to buy a cup of tea after the race. Perhaps the most famous cyclist implicated is Jose Vicente Garcia Acosta, a luxury domestique of Alejandro Valverde at Caisse d’Epargne.

The investigations of the Guardia Civil in to the illegal practices of the gang began in August when some people were caught in possession of EPO and growth hormone. The investigators were quickly on to Viru, a former assistant of Fuentes. He owns a diet clinic in Valencia . It was presumably convenient for his side line that his son is a pharmacist.

German speed skating star Claudia Pechstein keeps banned from her sport after a verdict by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Switzerland, the highest court in sport, but the decision is a controversial and an indicatory one.

The doping story of Claudia Pechstein is and always was an extraordinary one with this decision probably being the final chapter of her career. It is quite remarkable because Pechstein has never failed a drugs test and therefore was the first sport person to be banned because of abnormalities in her blood when tested. Some media reports therefore suggest that she had a blood transfusion. However, it is very important to consider that Pechstein had abnormalities in her blood tests several times, always just before a World Championships or Olympic Games. But then the doping laws were different and because she did not literally dope, she could not be banned. But law´s changed in the last years and therefore the International Speed Skating banned Pechstein for two years. After appealing against the verdict, Pechstein was allowed to continue practising for the Olympic Games but the final verdict through the CAS put an end to Pechstein´s hopes.

Is the ruling a bitter loss for Pechstein herself, itdefinitly strenghtens the hands of anti doping inverstigators. So far scientists had to be on their toes to develop legally acceptable tests to detect doping but this might change with the CAS ruling. The indirect verification procedure that was included in the new Code of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) allows drug inspectors new freedoms in performing their job and they made use of it in the case of Pechstein. Nevertheless, did Claudia Pechstein really dope? She does of course deny it, and indeed, doping experts and scientists can not bee 100% per cent sure. But it is very likely that she did. In addition to that, the judges had allowed themselves plenty of time to reach a decision. The judgment needed to be watertight before banning one of the most successful athletes in the world from her discipline and furthermore set such an important example.

So finally one can say that, of course, five times Olympic gold medal winner Pechsteins career lies in ruins after the ruling. She will miss her sixth successive Olympic Winter Games and might have to end her career before the ban ends in February 2011. However, the remarkable decision might lead the way into a doping-free future as athletes have to be more aware considering the new regulations. But on the other hand it will also lead to a new wave of doping cases over suspicious blood tests which will show the fact that even more athletes dope than the spectator would dare to imagine. But it is the only way to get a clean sport!

Preocupada com os recentes casos, a Federação Equestre Internacional (FEI) prepara uma ofensiva contra o doping. A ideia da entidade é aprovar na quinta-feira um novo conjunto de regras, na tentativa de que não aconteçam resultados positivos durante a Olimpíada de Londres, em 2012.

As novas regras devem incluir a criação de uma agência antidoping independente, o aumento da segurança dos animais durante as competições e a adoção de um programa de educação aos atletas sobre as mais de mil substâncias que são proibidas no hipismo.

“Não haverá razão para ter algum caso positivo na Olimpíada de Londres se tudo correr como o planejado”, afirmou a diretora jurídica da FEI, Lisa Lazarus. Segundo a entidade, as 133 federações nacionais já manifestaram apoio à ofensiva contra o doping.

La procura del Coni ha deferito al tribunale nazionale antidoping con richiesta di tre mesi di squalifica Bartolomeo Goitre e Luca Stefanini, i medici della Juve coinvolti in avvio di stagione nel caso Cannavaro.

Il capitano della Nazionale aveva utilizzato una pomata  al cortisone che aveva provocato la positività nel test antidoping effettuato dopo Roma-Juve, seconda gara di campionato disputata il 30 agosto. La pomata era stata utilizzata dallo staff medico bianconero per controllare gli effetti di una puntura di ape subita durante gli allenamenti.

La richiesta di esenzione per emergenza era stata presentata ma era incompleta nella documentazione. Il caso era stato poi archiviato come da richiesta del capo della procura antidoping del Coni, Ettore Torri, una volta “accertata la veridicità dell’episodio che ha originato l’intera vicenda”.

Joachim Franke (langjähriger Trainer von Claudia Pechstein):,,Es ist eine Katastrophe, ein absolutes Fehlurteil. Sie hat nie eine Leistung manipuliert. Insofern ist die Entscheidung nicht nachzuvollziehen.”

Fritz Sörgel (Pharmakologe, Leiter des Instituts für Biomedizinische und Pharmazeutische Forschung): ,,Ich denke, dass von Anfang an klar war, dass es in diese Richtung laufen musste. Ich habe gleich gesagt, dass es sehr schwierig werden wird, hier Gegenargumente zu finden. Es ist immer eine gewisse Unsicherheit mit drin, aber die ist im Fall Pechstein sehr klein.”

Wilhelm Schänzer, Leiter des Instituts für Biochemie an der Deutschen Sporthochschule Köln: ,,Ich bin sicher, dass der indirekte Nachweis von Doping-Missbrauch aufgewertet wird und die Entscheidung eine positive Stimmung bei den Verbänden erzeugt. Nicht wohl ist mir aber, dass das Urteil nur auf einen Parameter, die erhöhte Anzahl von Retikulozyten im Körper, beruht.”

Detlef Thieme, Leiter des Instituts für Dopinganalytik und Sportbiochemie in Kreischa: ,,Das Prinzip ist bestätigt. Individuelle Blutprofile und Blutpässe werden an Bedeutung gewinnen. Wichtig ist, wie sind die Details beschaffen, was wird uns für die Praxis mit an die Hand gegeben.”

Helge Jasch (Teamchef Deutsche Eisschnelllauf-Gemeinschaft): ,,Mir verschlägt es die Sprache, ich bin platt. Jetzt ist das Urteil da, es schwächt sportlich unser Team. Wir haben schließlich nicht 20 Leute, die Medaillen gewinnen können.”

Udo Sprenger (Vizepräsident Bund Deutscher Radfahrer): ,,Ich denke, die indirekte Beweisführung müssen und sollten wir zulassen. Ansonsten ist das ganze Prozedere mit Blutpassprogramm etc. hinfällig.”

Clemens Prokop, Präsident Deutscher Leichtathletik-Verband (DLV): ,,Die Entscheidung dürfte die Qualität der Doping-Bekämpfung spürbar verändern. Sie wird in Zukunft nicht mehr isoliert nur auf die Kontrollen abgestellt. Nun wird die Summe der Fakten ein Gleichgewicht erhalten.”

Thomas de Maiziere (Bundesinnenminister): “Das Urteil ist für Claudia Pechstein menschlich bitter. Sie war bis zum heutigen Tag für viele Sportbegeisterte, auch für mich, ein großes Vorbild. Das Disziplinarverfahren gegen Claudia Pechstein als Bundespolizistin wird wieder aufgenommen, wenn das Urteil rechtskräftig ist. Für den internationalen Sport ist das Urteil wegweisend. Es lässt den Indizienbeweis zum Nachweis von Doping zu. Der Nachweis eines einzelnen Dopings im konkreten Fall ist nicht mehr notwendig. Damit kann der internationale Sport sauberer werden. Als deutscher Innenminister erwarte ich allerdings, dass solche strengen Maßstäbe nicht nur gegenüber unseren Athleten, sondern weltweit angewandt werden.”

Der Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne bestätigte heute in einer richtungsweisenden Entscheidung die zweijährige Sperre ab dem 08.02.2009, die die International Skating Union (ISU) gegen die Eisschnelläuferin Claudia Pechtstein verhängt hatte. Damit hat der CAS den indirekten Beweis für rechtlich zulässig erachtet.

Wegen aufälliger Blutwerte hatte die ISU die Athletin am 01. Juli 2009 für zwei Jahre gesperrt. (Urteil der Disziplinarkommission der ISU vom 01.07.2009 finden Sie hier) Claudia Pechstein, die die Doping-Vorwürfe immer bestritten hat, hatte gegen diese Entscheidung beim CAS Rechtmittel eingelegt.

Am 22. und 23. Oktober 2009 verhandelte der Internationale Sportgerichtshof in Lausanne unter dem Vorsitz des Richters Herr Massimo Coccia aus Italien, wo neben den Parteien und ihren Rechtsanwälten auch zwölf Zeugen gehört wurden. In seiner Begründung stellte der CAS fest, daß Pechsteins Blutwerte aus Februar 2009 nicht normal seien und der Verlauf ihre Blutprofils durch die medizinischen Argumente, die die Athletin vorgetragen hat, nicht begründet sei.

Claudia Pechstein gab auf einer Mitteilung auf ihrer Homepage bekannt, daß ihr Rechtsanwalt nun ein Verfahren vor dem Schweizer Bundesgericht anstrengen werde.

Die Deutsche Eisschnelllauf-Gemeinschaft e.V. (DESG), die ebenfalls als Partei an dem Verfahren beteiligt war, hat in einer Mitteilung bereits erste Konsequenzen für Claudia Pechstein bekannt gegeben.

Die Athletin kann somit nicht in der Verbandsförderung verbleiben, die bestehende Wettkampfsperre wird aufrecht erhalten. Eine Qualifikation für die Teilnahme an den Olympischen Winterspielen in Vancouver 2010 ist nicht möglich.

Die Nationale Anti Doping Agentur (NADA) begrüßte, daß die Entscheidung des CAS nun Klarheit über den indirekten Beweis geschaffen hat.

„Die Entscheidung bringt für alle Beteiligten eine größere Sicherheit, welche Kriterien erfüllt sein müssen, wenn der indirekte Nachweis eines Verstoßes gegen Anti-Doping-Regelungen gelingen soll“, so der Geschäftsführer Dr. Göttrik Wewer.

Get ready to see the name Walter Viru a hundred times in the next six months as this drug story unfolds. He’s the Man with the Syringe, the head of yet another doping ring uncovered by the Spanish Guard Civil.

It’s the usual stuff we know so well in the Post-Peurto world: raids, illegal products, riders, doctors, pharmacists taken in for questions, computers and cell phones seized. A total of a dozen people in custody already in Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia (shout out to home boy Alejandro Valverde!) and Granada.

You’re Kelme-ing me, Walter Viru. His name doesn’t have the theatrical musicality of Operacion Puerto’s Dr, Eufemiano Fuentes but he is Peruvian, providing a little South American flavor to the same old sordid story. (Fuentes himself is busy these days organizing a charity event for suspended riders.)

Walter was a former collaborator with Fuentes at syringe-central, the Spanish Kelme team. Remember those disgraced green boys Roberto Heras, Oscar Seville, Aitor Gonzales? Yeah, that team. Let’s just agree to wipe every result any Kelme rider had in their drug run from from 1980 to 2006.

Jesus Marzano, former Kelme rider and whistle-blower, claims Viro had a close relationship back in the day with one of the four UCI approved Spanish testing labs. “The owner of this clinic, a renowned hematologist, called Walter Viru, who is one of the doctors for Kelme, [in order] to alert them the day before the UCI vampires were coming to take the samples from the cyclists,” said Marzano.

Twisted Spoke begins to think even we could uncover a Spanish doping ring since they seem to be everywhere. We’d simply slip on a Caisse d’Eparne jersey, wander into any pharmacy and whisper “pssst, Alejandro sent me. My legs feel heavy.” If we asked “Donde esta Doping Ring?” at the local tourist information booth, they’d probably point us in the right direction.

The Operacion Peurto story began in May of 2006 and drags on to this day without any conclusion in sight. Will be still be talking about Walter Viro in 2012? We have Jesus and Grial, the Spanish word for “grail” so perhaps someday we might get the holy truth.

Austria’s anti-doping agency ban Pfannberger after EPO positive Christian Pfannberger has been given a life-long ban by the Austrian National Anti-Doping Agency, after his second doping violation in March this year. The Austrian, who has consistently denied ever having doped, has indicated he will challenge the ban. Pfannberger, 30, tested positive for EPO at an out-of-competition control in March. He had previously served a two-year ban from 2004 to 2006 after testing positive for testosterone. “This is what we expected, since he has been caught twice,” Herbert Kocher, Vice President of the Austrian cycling federation (Österreichischen Radsportverband, ÖRV) told Cyclingnews. “We are a federation that fights against doping with our full force and are therefore satisfied with the results.” Pfannberger turned pro in 2002 with the German Team Nürnberger Versicherung and rode for Team Volksbank Ideal in 2003. His first violation came in 2004 when he was riding for the Czech team eD System-ZVVZ. When he returned, he rode for the Austrian team Elk Haus-Simplon (2006-2007), Barloworld (2008) and Katusha (2009). The Austrian was Military world champion in the road race in 1999, and won the Under-23 International Thüringen Rundfahrt in 2001. As a pro, he won both the Austrian national road title (2007, 2008) and the mountain title (2006). He finished 23rd in the road race at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ein Skandal. Die Liste wird “Progressive Liste” genannt und bedeutet einen Rückschritt im Tierschutz.

Ein Pferd für den Wettkampf fit zu spritzen, das normalerweise Schmerzen hätte ist tierschutzwidrig und unfair. Hier setzt sich wieder einmal die Profitgier durch.

A morte súbita entrou no esporte? (Puerta, Jarque, De Nigris e outros)?

Não morrem mais agora do que morriam antes. O que ocorre é que agora as mortes são televisionadas ao vivo. Para deixar claro, o esporte protege contra a morte súbita. Uma pessoa que pratica esportes tem menor risco do que uma que não faz nenhum exercício.

A morte súbita é o infarto do miocárdio?

Em 80% das vezes sim. Mas a enfermidade do esporte é a miocardiopatia hipertrófica. O coração é maior, é hereditária. Há doentes que não sabem disso porquê nunca foram atletas.

É detectável?

Sim. Um atleta de elite que faz, no geral, ecocardiograma, prova de esforço e um eletrocardiograma.

E quando não é de elite…

Aí que está o problema. É que não fazem revisões. Uma assinatura de um médico é tudo o que se pede. Na Itália, por exemplo, esses três exames são obrigatórios. O índice de mortes ali é menor.

E o que acontece na Espanha?

Estamos no limbo da morte súbita. Não há legislação. É um problema do Governo. Realizar um eletrocardiograma não é tão difícil nem tão caro. Não custa mais do que 3 euros. Poderia ser feito em todas as crianças a partir dos 13 anos nas escolas. Não morreria ninguém? Não. Olhe Dani Jarque [jogador do Espanyol encontrado morto na pré-temporada de seu clube em 8 de agosto de 2009 aos 26 anos de idade].

Foi uma surpresa porque tinha tudo em ordem. Consta que não tinha nenhum problema. Não é o mesmo caso de Puerta [jogador do Sevilla, morto aos 22 anos de idade em virtude de inúmeras paradas cardio-respiratórias durante e após uma partida em 26/08/2007].

Não viram que tinha uma displasia ventricular? Falamos de desportistas de alto nível, com contratos caros e há coisas que não querem ver… Ao final, a decisão é do jogador. Deveria haver um desfibrilados em qualquer recinto esportivo do país.

O doping é uma das causas destas mortes súbitas?

Com certeza. Se quer proibir o doping não é por quê é trapacear e sim porquê o doping acaba matando. Provoca o aumento dos músculos, mas também faz isso no coração, e voltamos a famosa hipetrofia artificial induzida pelas drogas.

O que é a Síndrome Brugada?

Meus irmãos e eu descobrimos há muitos anos. É um defeito genético que causa uma parada cardíaca durante o sono.

Está na internet um abaixo assinado contra a decisão tomada pela FEI na Assembléia em Copenhagen no dia 19 de novembro. Ficou decidido na assembléia que a partir de janeiro de 2010 passa a ser permitido o uso de alguns medicamentos, como Fenilbutazona, Apirina, Flunixin, Anti-flamatórios e outros.

As pessoas que assinarão a petição pedem que a FEI não aplique essa decisão, conhecida como “Lista Progressiva”. Dizendo que competir com um animal que está usando esses medicamentos é uma infração contra o bem estar do cavalo.
