The Dore website dore.co.uk has been redesigned recently. In the process they seem to have ‘lost’ all mention of the ‘Balsall Common’ study (Reynolds, Nicholson, Hambly, 2003; Reynolds & Nicholson, 2006), which though heavily criticised was the only research on Dore published in a peer-reviewed journal. They also seem to have dropped the various bits of ‘research’ which were either unpublished or press-released through such august journals as the Leamington Courier. The research which Wynford Dore said he’d be concentrating on funding, after Dore went broke and he brought back the assets (but not liabilities) for a fraction of the cost, seems to have disappeared – I’d be glad to hear if there’s been any progress here.

Prof Nicholson of Sheffield university carried out the ‘Balsall Common’ study and is a key figure in Dore’s early research and the cerebellar approach to learning difficulties. He has been admirably honest about the limitations of the approach, including issues with using the ‘dyslexia screening test’, which he developed, and refusing to endorse claims of a ‘miracle cure’. Prof Nicholson  seems to have been dropped from Dore’s publicity machine.

Dr Roy Rutherford, a GP who had been very vocal in lending ‘medical backing’ to the Dore programme, seems to have also been absent from Dore and setting up his own ‘Autism Treatment and Prevention Centre‘. Holfordwatch also discovered that Rutherford withdrew from his supposed PhD researching Dore at Sheffield university ‘without completing any substantive research’.

The only research on the new Dore website is a well-hidden link-dump of paper titles, which seem to have been put there by someone who’s done a keyword search without reading and understanding the papers – some of them don’t relate to cerebellar theories of learning disabilities at all, and none specifically look at the Dore programme.

Meanwhile, Dore’s expensive PR company, Phil Hall Associates, are pushing a human-interest, celebrity-backed media drive. This has seen them get slots on several regional news programmes and local papers, where Dore have been able to deliver their message completely unchallenged, despite in one case my telephoning the TV station before transmission.

Phil Hall have also been using Scott Quinnell, the rugby player who brought Dore from Kenny Logan and Wynford Dore, for free national publicity for the Dore programme. Worryingly, the BBC, ITV, and other news organisations either don’t know, haven’t checked, or don’t care that Scott owns the company he’s being given airtime to promote. I thought I was cynical about mainstream media, but this hidden advertising during news and sports programmes by supposedly reputable and trustworthy organisations has shocked me.

To summarise, Dore have had to give up trying to pretend their programme is ’scientifically proven’, but they can pay for clever enough PR that this does not seem to matter any more. But do not despair. The Advertising Standards Authority have upheld a complaint about Dore, agreeing that Dore could not come up with evidence to support its claims to treat dyslexia.

As neither the first nor second study referred to Asperger’s syndrome and only two participants in the first study had dyspraxia, we considered that the evidence was inadequate to support claims to treat those conditions. With regards to dyslexia and ADHD, we did not consider that the studies were sufficiently robust to support the treatment claims for those conditions, and we therefore concluded that the claim was misleading.

Hooray! Go & read the whole thing, it’s a few paragraphs of clear demolition of Dore’s arguments. Holfordwatch, who made the original complaint, have a discussion of the ruling, and Podblack has covered the background.

So: the ASA agrees that Dore has no evidence to show it works, Dore themselves have pretty much taken their ball and gone home on the research issue, but because of Dore’s unfortunate tendency to reach for lawyers, Dr Rutherford’s admission that I’ve only not been sued yet because they can’t find me, and British libel law being pants (please sign their petition), then I still can’t put my real name to telling you so. This is a thoroughly unsatisfactory situation.

In this post I will conclude my series on the seven deadly sins.

What have I learned?

First, I’ve learned more about the sins. It’s certainly interesting to learn the ins and outs of each vice; to get a real good glimpse of the nature of each sin and how it is expressed not only in culture and in others but in myself.

Second, knowing more about each sin has helped me see them in myself. Studying the sins has given me a better sense of self awareness. I am better able to recognize them and deal with them.

Third, studying the sins has spurred me to strive for a pure heart. Regarding the Heart, St. Maracius states:

The heart itself is but a small vessel, yet dragons are there, and there are also lions; there are poisonous beasts and all the treasures of evil. But there too is God, the angels, the life and the kingdom, the light and the apostles, the heavenly cities and the treasuries of grace—all things are there

The heart is the seat of one’s being. From the heart, all everything, both good and bad, dragonine and divine acts and attitudes stem forth. As Christ says according to Luke,

“The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.’
Lk 6:45
The mouth speaks only what’s overflowing from the heart. The heart spurs all actions. Whatever an individual dwells on, that’s what he becomes, what he does, says, thinks and feels. Our corrupted our nature. Rather than contemplating, encountering and living in the Divine, we fall further and further into sin, into non-being. As Christ says again according to Matthew:

“For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies.” (Matt. 15:18)

We cannot combat these vices alone; the law of sin and death has enslaved us. But through Christ, sin and death are vanquished and we can once again partake in the Divine nature. Through Christ, death is defeated. Through Christ, the powers of the seven vices are rendered impotent. Through Christ, we regain our humanity.

This is what Christmas is about: the incarnation of The Word to liberate us, “trampling down death by death”

prénom en calligraphie gothique : Béranger

Je calligraphie rarement des prénoms, alors que vous pouvez quasiment tous les trouver sur le site de l’association Emily Calligraphy mais j’ai eu envie de faire plaisir à mon neveu de quinze ans qui comme de bien entendu aime l’écriture gothique (au grand désespoir de sa mère parce qu’il aime bien aussi les crânes et tous ces trucs morbides).

Pour cette écriture, la “black letter”, la couleur noire s’imposait mais Béranger m’a demandé d’écrire sur fond noir.

Impossible de remettre la main sur mon tube de gouache argentée. J’ai donc réalisé la calligraphie en gouache dorée sur papier cartonné noir que j’achète par lots de 3 blocs de 20 feuilles (chez Makro pour tout vous dire).

Réalisation de la calligraphie :

Encre : gouache dorée,

Outil : plume biseautée 5mm

Ecriture : Gothique textura : “toute pensée écrite semble figée”

Fond : papier cartonné noir 120 grammes

Prénoms en rapport : le prénom Bérengère calligraphié par Emily, aussi à colorier

Auto-critique : la photo est ratée et les p’tites lignes décoratives sont de travers, mais comme je n’avais plus rien publié depuis plus d’un mois…

Cette fois-ci mesdemoiselles, c’est dans l’univers des nuits parisiennes que nous allons nous diriger !

 Et oui celles qui ne sont pas trop « m’as tu vu » à la base vont se sentir  mal à l’aise cette saison! 

Le doré, les paillettes, les brillants, l’argenté, les sequins bref  toute une farandole de matières et de couleurs qui ne passent vraiment pas inaperçues et on adore ça pour être tout de suite vues !!!!

Pour commencer assez léger, je propose à celles qui n’ont pas encore adopté le doré pétant de tester le mordoré .

Cette couleur est très tendance, on l’aime en légère touche dans une tenue, on l’associe avec du noir pour la sublimer !!!

Grâce au mordoré vous resterez élégante tout en étant tendance. C’est un bon compromis pour les affranchis du bling bling.

Pour les autres, et bien il y a du choix ! Vraiment beaucoup de choix !

Commençons par ce qui marche déjà depuis plus d’un an : je parle du sequin évidemment !!

Ha !!! le sequin ce petit disque brillant qui une fois porté donne du cachet à votre tenue ! je pense vraiment que je ne vais jamais m’en lasser…

On l’aime porté en gilet, veste ou cardigan, dans les tons noir, argenté, mordoré ou même pourpre.

Il donne tout de suite  un effet rock aux tenues les plus sobres, il se porte facilement et gros avantage: AVEC TOUT !!

Je vous assure du jean (troué ou non) à la petite robe en dentelle, le sequin est notre allié autant l’utiliser !!

Passons aux choses sérieuses à présent, les perles se retrouvent partout sur nos vêtements…Est-ce bon pour nous ou non ?

Les filles, c’est plus que bon, c’est génial ! Enfin on va pouvoir s’habiller sans se soucier du bijou qu’il faudrait associer !! 

Et oui l’avantage des perles c’est qu’elles donnent un effet collier garantie !

Pour une soirée en grande pompe, on optera pour une robe noire « style Charleston » ornée de perles alignées, plutôt dans les tons argentés !

Pour un rencard ce sera la veste avec des perles cousues sur les épaulettes ! Ainsi vous serez élégante, stylée, pas trop chargée car pas de bijoux et votre silhouette sera bien dessinée (les vestes à épaulettes donne un effet de corps plus mince)

Et enfin, pour une soirée  détente avec à la clef juste l’envie de se sentir jolie pour soi-même, vous choisirez le pull-over noir de préférence, tout simple avec des perles cousues sur les épaules.

On optera pour un modèle avec des perles de couleurs différentes comme le noir  et le doré par exemple.

Ceci donnera du style à votre pull sans vous prendre la tête au préalable !

Je parlais de bling bling tout à l’heure et vous devez vous dire que pour l’instant ce n’est pas si bling bling que ça ce que je propose !

Je gardais tout simplement le meilleur pour la fin !

Cette année c’est le doré qui  est acclamé ! mais surtout l’accessoire ultime c’est la chaîne en or assez épaisse !!

Je sais ça peut paraître étrange, dit comme ça,  mais je vous assure pour l’avoir testé ce week-end, ces chaînes font l’effet de bombe dans les soirées !!

Ya  juste un seul bemol, c’est qu’il faut vraiment bien savoir l’associer si on ne veut pas basculer dans le vulgaire !

C’est donc dans un esprit purement rock qu’on va la porter ! 

Le best :c’est avec un jean de couleur noir, une veste en cuir vintage pour casser l’effet trop clinquant, un t-shirt blanc simplissime qui divulgue juste une épaule à la limite, et des talons noirs mate style croco .

Avec tout ça vous enroulez votre chaîne en or épaisse autour du coup et vous être prête pour aller danser jusqu’au bout de la nuit !

The Humber PR Certificate class of 2009 – 2010 is notable thus far for one reason: we are the only ones to have been assigned a course dedicated to Social Media. Despite the fact that all visiting grads say we’re ’so lucky,’ teaching our class about online public relations tactics is like pulling teeth. It seems that many of us are simply not inclined to accept social media.

And I admit that I’m no exception. But I’m slowing coming around to blogging, and I am definetly addicted to my Google Reader. My RSS subscriptions consist of a lot of style blogs; it is the most practical form of international people watching. There`s also some illustration, design, and Canadian media and event content thrown in for good measure.

HOT TOPIC: Social Media Writers Gaining Fashion Cred

My hot topic emerged from several fashion-related blogs. Fashion bloggers are becoming increasingly powerful, earning interest from both designers and pr professionals. All parties involved are currently navigating the waters of how to deal with the power of social media.

Social Media writers are now earning the same perks as traditional print media writers.

A few high-profile examples:

- The Sartorialist was ranked at #20 on the UK Guardian’s most powerful blogs of 2008. Photographer Scott Schuman is a people watcher who posts photos of individuals with inspiring personal style. His site attracts more than 70,000 readers a day and has been named one of Time’s Top 100 Design Influences

- WhoWhatWear.com posts information on fashion trends, celebrity style, and inspiring personal style The site has had so much online success that they recently published a book.

- Tavi Gevinson is a 13-year old Amercian who’s blog was regarded as so professional and influential it resulted in invitations from established designers to attend their shows and even provide feedback on their designs.

- Garance Dore is a fashion illustrator who recently blogged about Dolce & Gabanna’s most recent show, in which she and three other bloggers were provided with laptops and coveted front-row seats. She called it “a revelation,” and had the chance to interview both designers after the show. The pair explained that their priority is communicating with their clients. And if their client are online, they are eager to participate.

There are so many blogs out there that they have recently formed their own online community, the Independent Fashion Bloggers, which provides a community as well as tips for those who run their own sites. Twitter’s 140-character conferences have also featured fashion-related discussion panels, with topics such as “Twitter Effects on Retailers.”

All this high-profile attention has resulted in fashion pr firms and designers being inundated by requests from bloggers looking for free samples, tickets, and media accreditation. But with so many blogs out there in cyberspace; not all can receive such exclusive perks. Just what are fashion PR reps and designers looking for? Research done by the IFB indicates that the standards for social media is identical to those of traditional media: writing ability, strong website content, followers that provide lots of feedback, and, of course, traffic.

One PR rep is quoted as saying: “I do feel fashion bloggers expect too much. Recently, during a fashion week, there were many requests from bloggers for front row seating. After looking up their sites I only granted front row to two of [them]. [Many of the sites] were local bloggers but their sites were either outdated or just not read.”

Final tips for Fashion PR professionals on dealing with members of Social Media:

- Don’t be afraid to say “no”. With such a wide variety of brands and sites out there, there is no reason why people should work together if they have anything less than a perfect fit.

- The community is very tightly-knit, so always be honest and polite when dealing with requests.

- Bloggers have indicated that they are interested in developing ongoing relationships with PR people, and wish to use their help to develop their online persona. If a blogger jsut isn’t a good fit for your client, politely decline the offer and offer constructive feedback.

With bloggers, PR reps, and designers all working together, the outcome will hopefully result in positive outcomes for all parties involved.

Update: In keeping with this theme, I wanted to mention that the US government has recently announced restrictions regrading free samples that bloggers receive from corporations. So much for free samples from your favourite label!

The Guinean opposition agrees to talk with the junta

At the request of Mr Compaore, the opposition leaders in Guinea have finally agreed to resume dialogue with members of the junta and the self-proclaimed president of Guinea, Captain Dadis Moussa Camara, a month after the massacre of opposition demonstrators by the army.

The proposals of the “lifeblood” of Guinea (opposition parties, unions, civil society), contained in a document of 8 pages, were handed over Wednesday evening to Mr. Compaore.

“On the merits, the call has been well heard for the dissolution of the CNDD (National Council for Democracy and Development, junta) and the departure of the head of the junta has been heard,, in order to set up a transitional authority identified consensually” said former Prime Minister (2004-2006) Cellou Dalein Diallo. “

Six months of transition

“We proposed a timetable. We think the transition could take six months from the establishment of the new authority of the transition,” said Diallo.

The Ombudsman then stated: “I think the proposals are both constructive and pertinent to the pursuit of my mission.”

The spokesman of the “lifeblood”, Jean-Marie Dore has also stressed that direct talks could leave the military coup in power for ten months: “Yes, through the mediation of President Blaise Compaoré, we agreed to talk with the junta in order to overcome the present situation. “

The junta was condemned internationally after the bloody suppression of a demonstration by opponents who said “no to dictatorship” and “no” to the possible candidacy of presidential Dadis.

The authority said that 56 civilians were killed and 934 wounded September 28, but NGOs estimate that at least “150 to 200″ people died.

Il est tôt, enfin pour un dimanche, c’est le 1er novembre et bien sûr, il fait gris. Je pense pourtant que vers midi, il y a toute chance que le soleil montre le bout de son nez . C’est en ce genre de matinée que Râ, notre petit soleil de jardin , nous est précieux. Il est nommé tel un dieu, mais ne se la raconte pas trop!
Comme toutes les fabacées, notre févier doré pousse vite,  seulement 4 ans depuis la photo postée dans le précédent article, avec taille sévère.
 Sobre en eau et engrais, il se débrouille en tous sols et situations. Nous avons beaucoup de ses cousins au jardin de L’Aspre et pour cause!

Le sol y est si pauvre et le climat si brutal.
Hier , il a fait plus de 20°, peut-être encore aujourd’hui mais tout aussi bien, les nuages ne s’écarteront pas et dès demain matin nous aurons basculé dans ce qui ressemble à votre automne mais est bel et bien le début du si court hiver catalan avec 10° de moins sur deux jours!
Ces énormes écarts de températures sont fréquents ici et redoutables, autant pour le physique que le moral.

Je vais aller éclairer mes pensées au feuillage de notre févier et vous souhaite un bon dimanche pas trop gris!

Je vous avais promis une photo ou deux de mon févier doré qui a endossé son habit d’automne et n’ai même pas eu le temps de saisir au vol l’appareil photo.
La journée pourtant a été tout entière centrée autour du jardin de l’Aspre que trois jardiniers plus ou moins efficaces, il faut bien l’avouer, parcouraient en tous sens…l’espace ce soir est propre, une visite ou deux à la déchetterie s’imposent , des végétaux ont joué aux chaises musicales et des trous finis ou pas en attendent d’autres!
J’ai la tête pleine de projets et les articulations douloureuses, un léger mal de tête  aussi, d’avoir trop parlé tout en agissant!
J’ai hâte de retourner au jardin demain matin, tout y change et à grande vitesse!

Je viens de m’apercevoir aussi que depuis sa plantation, je n’ai guère photographié le dit févier, surtout en pied…son environnement devait largement laisser à désirer mais c’est bien dommage de n’avoir trace de son évolution de jeune scion , en 2005, à ce que je vous montrerai demain, promis sans faute! Cela me servira de leçon!
C’est un arbre magnifique tout au long de l’année même si je ne vous montre faute de mieux que ses jeunes feuilles de printemps où se lovent déjà ses grappes de fleurs blanches.
Ses couleurs se sont avivées au fur et à mesure des années et de sa maturité!
 
Il débourre en vert acide, presque  jaune, fonce ensuite très progressivement jusqu’à devenir vert très foncé. De longues gousses torsadées se dissimulent alors dans son feuillage.

Lors des tailles de formation, il est assez désordonné, toutes les nouvelles pousses sont de nouveau vert vif et il termine en automne…eh bien vous le verrez demain!

Today’s post is on suffering. More so, this is a reflection on today’s sermon on Job this morning. In today’s bulletin was a quote by William Safire, which poignantly addressed our motivations for worshipping God.

We’re normally aware of the flagrant trappings of typical prosperity gospel jargon: material wealth, absence of pain and suffering, only asking for the good, etc. To this, our pastor (Raymond Bailey) questioned how those who propagate the prosperity gospel using proof-text exegesis from Scripture could possibly include the Book of Job in their canon.

Perhaps they can’t.

Anyway, we were talking about how general remarks about prosperity gospel-ness are normally detectable to those aware of it. However, as Safire acutely points out, we are less familiar with more subtle manifestations of an attitude of prosperity.

For example, how many times do we pray for good things, thinking treating God as if He’s some genie at our beck and call? How many times do we worship, viewing our “adoration” as some quid pro quo transaction between human and Divine? I worship You, do good things, keep up with the spiritual disciplines, etc, and You protect me, give me peace of mind, confidence to live life and a general sense of blessedness.

Viewed in this context, Marx’s remark of how religion is opiate for the masses truly hits home.

Why do we come to God? For good things alone? For blessing? Security?

Don’t get me wrong. It’s good to ask these things; we’re not in sin for asking for safety, security, blessing or interceding for our family and friends. However, if that’s all we do, if that’s our sole motivation for coming to God, how does that reflect our view of Him?

Is God really at our beck and call? Do our actions/prayer life say otherwise? This is Satan’s accusation of “Skin for skin.” We honor God as long as we are kept safe and are not harmed.

This is where Job comes in. Whether or not he existed is irrelevant. His absurd faith in God, even in the midst of complete desolation and isolation, demonstrates what it means to truly worship. He worshipped God in order to worship—no ulterior motives. He questioned and grappled with his misery, but he remained steadfast and worshipped God.

I love Kierkegaard’s treatment of Job, where he highlights that no one is exempt from suffering. Power, friends, wealth, even faith in God cannot put us above suffering. Job had friends, wealth, power and devotion. And yet he still suffered incredibly.

I see these subtle prosperity leanings in my own life. How often do I forget Who I’m praying to? How often do I walk the line between conceptual idolatry and genuine worship? How often do I cross it? I pray, but when I pray am I simply unfolding a list of supplications?

I desire to be a good man—a man who strives to walk humbly, love mercy and do justice. Similarly, I want to get into grad school, do well on my tests. I want my friends to be successful, my family to be safe, and my girlfriend and I to draw closer to each other. As previously mentioned, these are good things, but these requests cannot be my sole motivation for praying to God.

Rather than coming to God with this list to pray over, rather than bowing my head and closing my eyes to recite my daily requests (from a sense of entitlement? Or maybe just thoughtless words quickly mentioned to some servant or gift giver?) I must humble myself. I must trust in Divine Love and Grace. I may come as a child, but a child who respects his Father, not a spoiled brat. Jesus is not my homeboy, He is my King. He is not my by genie, he is my Savior.

The rain falls on the un/just. How we respond to trials reflect our true motivations for walking in Love.

Hi all, I’ve not vanished, just had a summer job which mostly involved being in muddy fields far from the Internet.

For anyone else in Yorkshire, ITV Yorkshire are going to be doing a Dore anecdote / free advertising tonight in the 6 o’clock ‘news’.

I’ve phoned them up this afternoon and explained the background & problems with this approach (anecdotes are not data, lack of evidence base, Dore’s tendency to use lawyers to suppress negative anecdotes, the usual) and pointed them at some background reading and questions to ask. I will be surprised if they take this on board, since the person I spoke to said it’s ‘just a piece about a girl from Harrogate’. Still, they’ve now got less excuse than some.
