Metallvärldens manligaste kvinnliga sångröst måste ändå tillhöra Angela Gossow i svensk/tyska Arch Enemy.

Missförstå mig rätt när jag säger att generellt låter inte kvinnliga hårdrockssångerskor nått vidare. Det brukar för det mesta bli krystat och “skrikigt”. Jag har inga problem med sjungande tjejer i andra genres. Men i hårdrock och metall så funkar det inte för mig.

Angela är ett av de få undantagen. Hon har en jäkligt cool röst och growlar med bravur. En annan kvinna som verkligen också kan få fram metallisk skönsång blandat med growl är Morgan Lander från Kittie.

Kanske nån kan tipsa om fler bra kvinnliga hårdrockssångerskor att blanda upp med bland alla tuffa karlar. (Å kom nu bara inte dragandes med Lita Ford och Doro Pesch.)

Doro rockt wieder reichlich amtlich! Was sich schon auf Calling The Wild über weite Strecken andeutete, findet auf dem symptomatisch Fight betitelten Nachfolgewerk seine konsequente Fortsetzung. Nach der Balladenphase in der ersten und der Elektronikphase in der zweiten Hälfte der 1990er-Jahre stehen mittlerweile wieder knackige Heavy-Rocker auf dem Plan, die ein um das andere Mal an Scheiben wie Force Majeure oder den 1987er-Warlock-Klassiker Triumph And Agony erinnern.

Natürlich kommt ein Album von Fräulein Pesch nicht gänzlich ohne Balladen aus: So beginnt “Undying” verdammt ruhig, nimmt jedoch in der zweiten Hälfte überraschend Fahrt auf, während “Wild Heart” als eine Art Halbballade durchgeht. Eher kitschig klingen dagegen “Fight By Your Side” und vor allem das mit deutschem Text und englischem Refrain operierende “Hoffnung”. Nummern wie der als Auftrittshymne für Box-Weltmeisterin Regina Halmich komponierte Titelsong, der Banger “Always Live to Win”, das teilweise spanischsprachige “Salvaje”, das gediegen vorwärts pumpende “Sister Darkness” oder das mit einem Shout-Refrain versehene “Chained” treten dagegen mächtig den Allerwertesten. Weitere Akzente können die von Kiss-Boss Gene Simmons komponierte Midtempo-Hymne “Legends Never Die” und das im Duett mit Pete Steele eingesungene, teilweise an Type O Negative angelehnte “Descent” setzen. –Andreas Stappert

Cartel de Festival Sirenas del Metal

No es común que se realice un festival de metal donde en todas las bandas haya alguna mujer, sin embargo en Detroit, Estados Unidos se realizará el Sirens of Metal Festival el próximo 13 de septiembre, y que tiene como cabeza de cartel a la experimentada alemana Doro Pesch.

Otras “sirenas” que estarán en este festival son Level C, Maxine (banda conformada por ex miembros de Vixen y Madam X) Dendura, Wicked Intent, Ingray y Reign IV.

El festival no se realizará en un gran estadio, escenario donde acostumbra presentarse Doro Pesch en Europa, sino en un  centro nocturno llamado Blondie’s, en Detroit, Michigan, donde seguramente los que asistan a la presentación se la pasarán bien, porque la mayoría de las bandas cuentan con un nivel muy bueno, a pesar de que no tienen apoyo de los medios formales.

Level C hace metal muy denso y aquí interpreta un clásico de Pantera, “Walk”.

Roxy Petrucci fue baterista de Vixen, una banda que llegó a a la fama a finales de los 80’s, pero que no llegó a nivel de grupo principal y ahora conforma el grupo Maxine con miembros de Madam X.

Madam X fue una banda que prometía mucho, porque tenían canciones pegajosas, pero el mundo del metal a mediados de los 80’s nunca estuvo preparado para su imagen tan bizarra y media alineación femenina.

 Dendura con su estilo metal combinado con música del Medio Oriente.

Wicked Intent tiene un sonido bastante original, donde buscan con armonías duras hacer un contraste con la voz sensual de Christy.

Ingray marca un estilo más pausado y suave, pero sin que falten las guitarras distorsionadas

Reign IV hace un metal más contemporáneo ayudándose de los agudos de su cantante femenina.

Hace poco más de un año en TdQ les “postié” una selección personal de lo que venían siendo las Reinas del metal; sí, esas chicas que forman parte de bandas de rock y metal que rompen con el estereotipo del metalero feo y sucio y por el contrario, nos brindan una imagen muy decente y a veces bastante sexy.

Hoy intento retomar parte de aquellos post, y en dos partes (una hoy y la otra el próximo viernes) les mostraré a éstas bellezas:

Песента ме разбива от всякъде, а донякъде ми навява и спомени за групата с която свирехме и песента “Chains of Freedom”, която си остана само инструментал.  Are the chains going to be on soon?

Yes, I said that to her, to her face even.  What a schmuck!  I was 18 and one of the first 5 people in line to see Megadeth, Warlock and Sanctuary(!).  We got there early because we wanted to be on the barricade at the Boathouse for the whole show.  We were so excited to see Sanctuary…getting to see Warlock and Megadeth was just icing on the cake.  But…this whole story is about Warlock.

So there we were in line when a van pulls up and Doro gets out with a few big body guard looking dudes flanking her.  She walks right by us and I was trying to think of something to say.  Being 18, my groin was doing most of my thinking at the time so I said, “Hey Doro!” to which she politely replied, “Jah?!” in her thick german accent.  I pulled the total Butthead moment and said, “uhhhhh…nice ass!”  Instantly in my head I said ‘d’oh!’  A big smile crossed her face and she said, “Oh, tank you!”  Man, I felt like such a dumbass.  I was such a dumbass.

But Warlock kicked total ass that night.  Now if you have known me for longer than a minute, you probably know that I am not a fan of metal bands fronted by women, save a few exceptions.  Warlock is one of those exceptions.

I remember it was right after meeting Big Bill 1986, he introduced me to Kirshon at the Triumph/Yngwie show.  Years later I ended up in a band with Kirshon.  Good times, bad times…but back to Warlock.  So we were at Chris’ place and I was flipping through his records and saw Warlock’s first 2 albums, Hellbound and Burning the Witches.  So he put on Burning the Witches and I was digging it.  Instant fan!  I proceeded to go out and buy those 2 on cassette as well as True as Steel a little later.

I remember reading in Circus magazine that they had a new one coming out called Triumph and Agony.  I picked it up the week it came out and loved it.  I still do.  It’s not as raw as the previous 3 albums, but it’s great.  Getting to see that tour was such a treat.  I think there were only a few people there who actually knew anything about Warlock (or Sanctuary for that matter) and we let them know that we were fans.  We were raising holy hell for them and they appreciated it.  Doro made several comments about “this group of guys over here who know what the hell is going on!  All of you should learn how to rock like these guys!”  Sure, cheesey stage banter but to a bunch of 17 and 18 year old fans, it was pretty cool.

I was pretty disappointed when they broke up after that tour.  Doro’s solo albums never did a lot for me but her debut, Force Majeur, was good enough to stay in my collection.

They played a good cross section of all of the albums in their set.  I was super excited when they went into “I Rule the Ruins”.

Doro has played San Antonio at least twice since I moved here and I should go the next time she plays.  Everyone says she still kicks ass live.

If you can find the Warlock: Live in London DVD, I highly recommend it.

Wendy O. Williams tenía mucha fuerza en sus actuaciones, desafortunadamente el éxito multitudinario nunca le llegó, aunque sí fue reconocido su esfuerzo y pasión por el rock.  Y a finales de los años 90’s lamentablemente decidió suicidarse a los 38 años de edad.

Mucho se ha hablado de que quizás la rockera  Courtney Love  incitó a Kurt Cobain a suicidarse o incluso que lo mandó a matar. Fuera de eso, sin que esté drogada es una mujer con sensualidad y que actualmente vive de las ganancias millonarias que dejó su fallecido esposo.

Amy Lee de Evanescense sorprendió en el mundo del rock por su estilo gótico-nüe metal, pero también por ser una mujer muy guapa, requisito para brillar en el mundo del espectáculo.

Sean Yseult, ex bajista de White Zombie también hizo historia con esta banda de groove metal, que demostró gran originalidad con su sonido crudo pero bailable.

Warlock was a German heavy metal band, assembled in 1982. They also could be described as hard rock or even glam metal, and gained some commercial success in the mid 1980s. By the end of the decade, singer Doro Pesch was the sole original member who remained in the band, and thus proceeded to form Doro, a band which was essentially a continuation of Warlock under a different name. Doro has several classic songs from Warlock on its repertoire.
Warlock’s music is always primarily described as heavy metal. Their style was more traditional in the beginning of the 1980s, shown on the Burning the Witches album, but soon going more to a hard rock and glam metal style starting with Hellbound. The band’s influences are 1970s hard rock and heavy metal acts such as Judas Priest and Black Sabbath, N.W.O.B.H.M., and fellow German metal bands such as Scorpions and Accept.

Das neue Doro Pesch Album “Fear No Evil”, das am 30. Januar erscheint (AFM Records), wird offenbar einige Zusatzangebote beinhalten, um den Kauf des Albums zu incentivieren. Yps mit Gimmick, sozusagen.

I made a brief foray into the shopping centre on the way home from work today and hark! no carols. Tis now the ringing of cash registers that enlivens the corridors and aisles, although there wasn’t much of that going on either. I must’ve missed the rush

I’m not much a one for carols, especially when they are played in November, but I did find an album that got a few listens in the lead-up to Xmas Day: We Wish You a Merry Xmas. (Armoury/Riot)

This little beauty has 14 carols on it, all given varying degrees of metal treatment from some experts in the field.

Alice Cooper does Santa Claws (sic) is Coming to Town (Santa as a very spooky stalker, if not worse), Motorhead’s Lemmy does the gruff business on Run Rudolph Run, and Testament’s Chuck Billy produces a side-splitting thrash metal rendition of Silent Night.

There are some dull tunes, too, but the album ends on a high: O’ Christmas Tree by Doro Pesch and Auld Lang Syne sounding live and raw and slightly drunken thanks to Girlschool. Just the way Christmas should be!

25 years in her career as a metal singer, that is. Doro’s come a long way from her 80s Warlock days, but she’s still looking good in, a cougar sorta way. Raaaaaaaarrrrr! (who said Metal didn’t age well?!)

And she has the strength of a cougar, too: she performed a three-hour set in Germany to celebrate her 25 years in the business. Guests were Overkill’s Bobby Blitz, The Scorpions (see her with Scorpions’ Klaus Meine, above), Grave Digger, Holy Moses, Girlschool, and other 80s metal luminaries.

80s metal is back !… at least in Germany.
