In the last post we spoke about what are vaccines, why do we need vaccines, shots that needs to be taken during entire childhood and it’s schedule. The information was little boring and overwhelming but it is also very important to be aware of different kind of vaccines.

Hepatitis B (HepB)
Hepatitis B is a liver disease that is spread through contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person. Those who become chronically infected with the disease can have serious problems such as cirrhosis (scarring of the liver) or liver cancer. Nearly 5,000 people die from complications of chronic hepatitis B each year.

What are the symptoms of acute hepatitis B?

Acute hepatitis B is the period of illness that occurs during the first one to four months after acquiring the virus. Only 30% to 50% of adults develop significant symptoms during acute infection. Early symptoms may be non-specific, including fever, a flu-like illness, and joint pains. Symptoms of acute hepatitis may include:

fatigue, loss of appetite,  nausea, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and pain in the upper right abdomen (due to the inflamed liver).  Rarely, acute hepatitis damages the liver so badly it can no longer function. This life-threatening condition is called “fulminant hepatitis.” Patients with fulminant hepatitis are at risk of developing bleeding problems and coma resulting from the failure of the liver. Patients with fulminant hepatitis should be evaluated for liver transplantation. Small studies suggest that the drug lamivudine (Epivir), may be of limited assistance in these cases.

The vaccine. Hepatitis B vaccine is made from one part of the hepatitis B virus. Since the three doses of the vaccine usually confer lifetime immunity, vaccination beginning at birth or shortly thereafter means your baby will probably never have to
worry about catching hepatitis B.

The dose. Three doses of the vaccine are needed. The first is usually given at birth (though it can also be given between birth and 2 months); the second dose is given between 1 to 4 months; the third is given between 6 to 18 months.

Rotavirus:  Rotavirus is an intestinal virus that is extremely contagious, spreading easily through contact with contaminated hands or objects and through the air, and infecting nearly all children by the time they’re five years old. The disease commonly appears between the months of November and May. Before the vaccine was approved, rotavirus triggered more than 400,000 doctor visits and more than 55,000 hospitalizations for diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration each year in the US. Rotavirus can even be fatal, accounting for 20 to 60 deaths each year in the US. Symptoms include fever, upset stomach, and vomiting, followed by diarrhea that lasts from three to eight days.

The vaccine. The rotavirus vaccine was added to the immunization schedule in 2007. It is an oral vaccine (a liquid given in the mouth) that contains live (but weakened) rotavirus virus.

The dose. Depending on the brand your doctor uses, either two oral doses are given at 2 and 4 months, or three are given at 2, 4, and 6 months.

 Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis (DTaP)
Diphtheria is spread through coughing and sneezing. It initially causes sore throat, fever, and chills. It can also cause a thick covering to form over the back of the throat, blocking the airways and making breathing difficult. If it isn’t promptly treated with the proper medication, the infection causes a toxin (poison) to spread in the body that
can then lead to heart failure or paralysis. About 1 in 10 of those affected will actually die from diphtheria.

Tetanus is not a contagious disease. Instead, a person typically becomes infected with tetanus if tetanus bacteria found in soil, dirt, dust, or manure enter the body through a wound or cut. Symptoms, which can take up to 3 weeks to
appear, include headache, crankiness, stiffness of the jaw and neck, and then painful muscle spasms throughout the body. There are about 30 reported cases a year of tetanus in the US, and 1 out of 10 people who get the disease die from it.

Pertussis (aka whooping cough) is a very contagious airborne bacterial infection that causes violent rapid coughing and a loud “whooping” sound upon inhalation. Infants who contract the disease often need to be hospitalized. Between 20 to 40 children under the age of 3 months die from pertussis each year in the US.

The vaccine. DTaP is a combination vaccine protecting against three diseases: diphtheria (D), tetanus (T), and pertussis (P). All three components of the vaccine are “inactivated”– meaning they are killed and incapable of causing the disease. The “a” stands for “acellular” which means that the pertussis part of the vaccine contains only parts of
the pertussis bacterium, not the entire cell.

The dose. Five doses of DTaP are needed. The shots are given at 2, 4, and 6 months, followed by a booster between 15 to 18 months, and then another booster between 4 to 6 years old. Since protection can fade over time with this particular vaccine, the Tdap booster vaccine is recommended for adolescents between 11 and 12 years of age.

Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)

Hib disease used to be the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in children under the age of 5. In the 1980s before an effective Hib vaccine was available, 1 in 200 children were infected. Among those children, one in 4 had suffered permanent brain damage, and about 1 in 20 died. The disease is spread through the air by coughing, sneezing,
even breathing. If the bacteria gets into the lungs it can spread to the brain and other organs.

The vaccine. The Hib conjugate vaccine is made from the sugar coating of the Hib bacterium (in other words, it’s made from just one part of the bacterium).

The dose. Four doses are usually recommended, given at 2, 4, and 6 months, and again between 12 and 15 months of age (though one brand of the vaccine calls for only three doses, at 2 and 4 months and between 12 and 15 months of age).

This article is not surprising, but it is frightening.  Methamphetamine is incredibly addictive. Any pregnant woman who has abused methamphetamine, no matter their intentions should immediately get into effective drug treatment.  Good intentions and will power are often not stronger than the pull of addiction.  Good people go bad with methamphetamine and we can’t count on them to make ethical decisions.

Pregnant mice given a single dose of methamphetamine had babies who suffered from developmental problems and impaired motor skills, according to a University of Toronto researcher.

The Saskatoon Star Phoenix reported March 19 that researchers believe that meth use releases free radicals in the brain, which can cause a variety of damage, including to DNA. Fetal brains have less ability than adult brains to counteract free radicals, said University of Toronto researcher Peter Wells.

In mice, the harmful effects of prenatal meth use appear to be permanent. Wells said it’s not clear if the animal studies can be applied to human drug use, however. “It’s very difficult to know the (troubles) that meth causes in humans because there’s very little documentation about what they’re exposed to,” he said.

Alex stellte die Dose auf die Arbeitsfläche. Er stutzte. Hatte sich die Dose bewegt? Und hatte er gerade ein leises Schmatzen gehört? Ein Schmatzen aus der Dose?

So ein Quatsch! Einbildung. Oder der Erbseneintopf war durch das Abstellen in Bewegung geraten.

Alex suchte nach dem Dosenöffner. Natürlich! Wieder ganz unten in der Schublade. Wohl zum hundertsten Mal ärgerte er sich, dass er sich noch keinen neuen gekauft hatte. Das Billiggerät strotzte vor Rost. Selbst ohne Dose bedurfte es schon einer Kraftanstrengung, das kleine Zahnrädchen zu einer Drehung zu verleiten. So artete der schnelle Eintopf zwischendurch zu richtiger Küchenarbeit aus.

Alex kam regelrecht ins Schwitzen, bevor er auch nur in die Hälfte des Deckels eine schmale Öffnung geschnitten hatte. Er legte eine Pause ein.

Als er sich an die zweite Hälfte begeben wollte, zuckte er zurück. Wie eklig war das denn? Aus dem noch frischen Spalt zwischen Deckel und Dosenrand kroch eine fette Made. Der weiße Körper war feucht und pelzig. Ihr folgte eine weitere. Dann eine dritte.

Alex hielt sich die Hand vor den offenen Mund, brachte Abstand zwischen sich und die Dose und beobachtete mit einer angewiderten Faszination, wie sich immer mehr der weißen Viecher über den gar nicht mehr appetitanregenden Dosenaufdruck schleimten, um dann ihren Weg auf seiner Arbeitsplatte fortzusetzen. Krochen sie tatsächlich alle auf ihn zu?

Über den Anblick der Maden hatte er die Dose ganz vergessen. Plötzlich gab es einen Knall. Langsam hob sich der Deckel. Alex machte eine Art Tentakel aus. Dann schob sich der Körper des Untieres hinterher. Es sah aus wie eine dickleibige Spinne, deren Beine den Fangarmen eines Kraken ähnelten. Mit großen Saugnäpfen hielt es sich am Blech der Dose fest. Von den zangenartigen Kiefern, die mit einem klickenden Geräusch stetig auf und zu schnappten, tropfte zähflüssiger Speichel. Erstaunlich intelligente Augen starrten Alex an.

Er rümpfte die Nase. Es roch nach halb verdautem Eintopf, Fäulnis und Fisch.

Eigentlich war dieses Ding gar nicht so groß. Sonst hätte es auch kaum in die Büchse gepasst. Allerdings begann es jetzt mit seltsamen, fast wiegenden Bewegungen vor und zurück zu schaukeln, als wolle es Schwung holen. Dabei war sein Blick weiter starr auf Alex gerichtet. Und je länger er dem Wesen in diese faszinierenden Augen schaute, desto klarer wurde ihm: Es wollte wachsen. Es hatte noch immer Hunger.

Schon spürte er die ersten Maden an seinen Beinen hochkriechen. Er glaubte beinahe das Knabbern zu hören. Doch das war jetzt nicht mehr wichtig, denn in den Augen seines Gegenübers konnte er es lesen: Der Erbseneintopf war nur der Anfang gewesen.

Uma semana se passou desde o primeiro mal-estar de Tom Zé, meu pequeno Yorkshire de 10 anos. Essa última semana foi longa demais. Cheia de estresses, tensão, muito cansaço, uma certa dose de desespero e muitas incertezas.

Confesso que me perdi nos últimos dias. Chegou uma hora em que a razão se perdeu e me tornei mais emoção do que o normal e usual. Houve noites em que não dormi. Tinha medo de parar de rezar e algo acontecer com o meu bichinho. Afinal, nos momentos de desespero, nada melhor do que exercitar a fé, não é mesmo?!

Rezei para São Francisco, descobri São Sebastião e busquei apoio em todos os lados. Por sorte, Deus é realmente muito grande, fui muito amparada. Enquanto o clima estava pesado aqui em casa, muitas pessoas queridas e especiais apareceram para dar uma palavra amiga, um consolo, um pouco de fé e esperança.

Ficamos até emocionados com as demonstrações de carinho. Foram diversos telefonemas, e-mails, recados via Twitter, scraps do Orkut, mensagens fofas via comentário do blog, vibrações positivas e as mais diversas manifestações. Descobrimos que o Tom Zé é realmente muito amado por todos os que nos rodeiam – nosso cachorrinho conquistou a todos – e isso foi muito importante nesse período de recuperação dele.

Aproveito este espaço virtual, tão querido e amado para mim, para agradecer toda a força e carinho que recebi nos últimos dias. De verdade! Cada palavra fez a grande diferença e me ajudou a enfrentar esta complicada fase… Muito obrigada MESMO, por tudo! Quem esteve ao meu lado – de uma fase ou outra – foi essencial

Desde quarta-feira, ele está em casa. Teve alta em caráter de observação – achamos que deixá-lo mais tempo na clínica veterinária apenas tornaria seu quadro de saúde mais delicado e frágil. Obviamente, ele não está 100% ainda, mas está perto disso. Tem dado trabalho para comer e começa a ficar chatinho – do jeito que o conhecemos normalmente. De alguma forma, isso é bom!

Confesso que ainda estou meio receosa com o estado dele – minha mãe fala que pareço uma galinha cercando meu filhote (só para explicar, o bebê Tom é meu filho, sabe?! #loucura), mas tento atendê-lo no que posso fazer. Com isso, minha vida virou um caos maior do que antes. Abandonei praticamente tudo e, agora, aos pouco, preciso retomar a minha rotina.

Tenho que estudar, tenho que ler, tenho que enviar textos para o grupo de e-mail de uma disciplina que faço, tenho que fazer meu capítulo para a qualificação do mestrado, tenho que voltar a ser amiga, tenho que descobrir NOVAMENTE meu lado mulher e, principalmente, tenho que encontrar a minha paz.

Ufa! É muita coisa…

Mas não tem problema! Tom Zé, aos pouco, retoma sua vida e eu também… Afinal, meu bebê estando bem, estarei bem também!

Il gruppo di esperti scientifici della European Food Safety Authority sugli additivi alimentari ha abbassato la dose giornaliera ammissibile per i coloranti artificiali: giallo chinolina (E104), giallo tramonto FCF (E110) e ponceau 4R (E124).

Come risultato, il gruppo ha concluso che l’esposizione a questi colori potrebbe ora superare la nuova DGA sia per adulti e bambini.

Il gruppo di esperti ha constatato che i dati attualmente disponibili non richiedono una modifica della DGA esistente per altri tre colori diversi valutati: tartrazina (E102), Azorubina / Carmoisina (E122) e rosso allura AC(E129).

Secondo il panel, solo alcuni bambini che consumano grandi quantità di cibi e bevande contenenti Azorubina / Carmoisina o rosso allura AC potrebbero superare la DGA per questi colori.

John Larsen, il presidente del gruppo di esperti ANS, ha dichiarato: “Molti dei coloranti alimentari sono in uso da decenni dopo la loro approvazione iniziale e così dopo un lungo periodo di uso stiamo ora guardando i dati complessivi disponibili, compresi gli eventuali nuovi elementi di prova sulla loro sicurezza, per proteggere i consumatori europei. Stiamo facendo questo lavoro sistematico per tutti gli additivi alimentari, e abbiamo iniziato con questi coloranti per i quali alcune preoccupazioni sono state sollevate. ”

I sei colori rivalutati dal pannello possono essere utilizzati in una vasta gamma di prodotti alimentari, comprese le bevande analcoliche, prodotti da forno e dolci. Il gruppo ha concluso che uno dei colori, tartrazina, può provocare reazioni di intolleranza – come irritazioni alla pelle – in una piccola parte della popolazione. Per i restanti cinque colori (giallo chinolina, giallo tramonto FCF, ponceau 4R Azorubina / Carmoisina e rosso allura AC), nessuna conclusione definitiva potrebbe essere disegnata su un possibile collegamento con le reazioni di intolleranza data una limitata evidenza scientifica a disposizione.

La Commissione europea ha chiesto all’EFSA di prendere in considerazione questi sei colori come una priorità, dopo che uno studio è stato pubblicato dalla Southampton University (McCann et al) nel 2007 – il cosiddetto “studio dell’università di Southampton” – che collega alcuni miscugli di questi colori e il conservante benzoato di sodio (coca cola) con iperattività nei bambini.

Larsen ha aggiunto: “Abbiamo ridotto la DGA per tre dei sei colori che abbiamo valutato, ma per ragioni diverse in ciascun caso i dati sono stati diversi in ciascuna sostanza singola. I dati che sono attualmente disponibili – compreso il Southampton studio stesso – non hanno dimostrano un nesso di causalità tra i colori singoli e i possibili effetti comportamentali “.

I had my three month appointment. After a month with no migraines and increased spottiness, my dose has been gently nudged up to 30mg from 20mg. So far I started at 30mg, doubled to 60mg, dropped to 20mg and have crept back up to 30mg!

I have to have more fasting blood tests done before my next appointment, so fingers crossed the nurse doesn’t have problems like last time! I’ve never felt like such a pin cushion.

Otherwise in terms of side effects, things aren’t too bad. My skin is less dry than it was on 60mg but drier than it would usually be, lips are dry but not peeling off. The most noticeable problem right now is the fact that I’m waddling a little because I have such bad stiffness in my upper legs and bottom!

We did it.  Another family bonding moment checked off.  Today: vaccinations to make sure the youngest one in our midst stays healthy.

After weeks of waffling, I decided to follow the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland:

So we bit the bullet, believed the hundreds of health-type people who studied H1N1 and created the vaccination.  An informed leap of faith.

The road we took to get vaccinated, once making the decision, was odd.

Last week: I phoned my family doctor to make an appointment for myself and Miss Q to get the shot.  The receptionist put us on a “list” with the promise of phoning back.

Monday morning dawned, Miss Q and myself were now eligible (as was my husband, but he has a different doctor).  No phone call.  Stories on the news all weekend weren’t helping the wait.  H1N1 was lurking at every escalator handrail.

Being pro-active, I phoned our doctor’s office, only to be told, “Oh no dear, we won’t be getting the vaccination.  You’ll have to line-up at one of the clinics if you feel it’s necessary.”

Deflated (and posting strike 2.5 up against my doctor’s office) I phoned my husband to relay the news, and tell him, it wasn’t worth it.  Standing in line alone with two children?  I’m brave, but not that brave.

His solution: pick him up from work and we’d drive to a clinic that morning.

It’s pouring with rain. We got to the clinic at 12:30.  There are 15 people in line.  Perfect. The news totally exaggerates.  Out comes the public health nurse.  Turns out there are over 100 people a head of us, getting squeezed in between people with tickets’ appointments.  (Those people were lined up at 4:30 a.m.)  We decide to stay and see how fast the line moves.  It doesn’t.  By 1:00, we’re told that we can stay (we’re the last people in line, literally) but we might not get the shot… and if we do happen to, it won’t be until 3:00.  We leave.

Tuesday:  A phone call at lunch from my husband saying somebody from work walked in and out of a clinic on West Saanich.  I bite the bullet, re-dress the girls, pick up husband, head to the clinic.  All the while trying to psych up Miss Q – we’re going to get some medicine…

Arrive at the fabled no-line clinic.  It’s closed.  No more appointments.  People were lined up at 4 a.m. down the block to a telephone pole.  Gawd.  What are people doing up at 4 a.m.?  This is beginning to feel like we’re scavenging for food; no room at the inn.

Wednesday:  The plan is to get to the clinic first thing: 7 a.m.  Reality = first thing = 8:30 a.m.  Husband literally leaps out of the car, before it stops, and joins the line.  I park, load up the kiddies, re-psych Miss Q up for her shot, “Orangoutans  don’t like shots, Mama,” and join him.

Feeling, now, like we’re in a bread-line, we rejoice when we actually get to speak to the check-in nurse; and hold our breath as we wait to see the needling nurses.

After 1.5 hours of waiting, we find ourselves on the other side.  Inoculated.  Waiting for 15-minutes to see if anything funky happens.  Miss Q is leaping off the bench – apparently orangoutans have tough arms.  (They’d better, she has to go back in 21 days for a second dose.)

Another parenting decision crossed off our expanding list.  Till the next one.

Since the reduction of my dose from 60mg to 20mg due to migraines, the skin on my back has gotten noticeably worse again. Several painful nodules have decided to crop up. Rubbish. I hope they increase the dose again the next time I´m at the hospital in about ten days.

This is NOT an endorsement of the highly controversial (and possibly dangerous) H1N1 Swine Flu vaccination, or any other flu shot for that matter. But it is interesting to note in this article from the New York Times that a woman’s body is able to immunize itself in a much stronger way with only half the amount of vaccine.

Why has this never been taken into account before? As young girls we were given vaccinations against childhood diseases in the same doses as our male counterparts.

Drug manufacturers and the medical community want us to trust them with our lives, but don’t take the time to properly test the vaccines or the effective dosages?

We must take all the facts into account before we agree to any recommended vaccine. It’s important for us to make that decision ourselves. It appears that no one cares about our bodies as much as we do. Let’s not be guinea pigs for any drug or drug company.

I think my African friend  (a well-educated scientist in her own right) has it right when she purposely took her children around kids with childhood diseases. Her kids got the diseases themselves and were thus naturally immunized against getting it again. And none of them died from the diseases, but they came through it stronger.

Since reducing my dose to 20mg, my back seems to have gotten spottier again, which is a shame.

Other than that, everything is pretty much the same – lips are still dry, but not peeling off to the same extent… oh, and I’ve developed scales instead of skin on my shoulders!

Well, I’ve been on 20mg a day for over a week now, after being on 60mg a day for a month. The reduction in side effects is noticeable. My lips are still dry, but they’re not peeling off any more. My face is much better and the joint stiffness is much reduced.

I haven’t had another migraine as of yet (hurrah), but it does feel like the rate of improvement of my skin has significantly dropped.
