I don’t think I’ve mentioned the Obama Administration’s Partnership for Sustainabl

I don’t think I’ve mentioned the Obama Administration’s Partnership for Sustainable Communities and its groundbreaking livability agenda on this blog, so I will now. It’s an interagency collaboration to better coordinate transportation, land use, housing and environmental policies in order to better incentivize healthier communities through smart growth and transit-oriented development.

Its six key livability principles are the following (click the link for more detail):

1. Provide more transportation choices.
2. Promote equitable, affordable housing.
3. Enhance economic competitiveness.
4. Support existing communities.
5. Coordinate policies and leverage investment.
6. Value communities and neighborhoods.

In my opinion, the livability agenda is one of the best things that’s come out of this administration so far in terms of unequivocally good policy. So naturally, Congressional Republicans are less than thrilled about it.

From late last week, via E&E Daily (subscription only):

President Obama’s push to reshape the nation’s transportation systems to focus on “livability” came under fire yesterday, as the top Republican on a House Science and Technology subcommittee complained the effort was poorly defined and could be construed as an “intrusion” into American lives.

“At a minimum, it represents an amorphous concept difficult to define and measure progress toward,” said Technology and Innovation ranking member Adrian Smith (R-Neb.). “More troubling, however, key aspects of the livability agenda appear to involve significant federal government intrusion into the manner in which Americans travel and live.“

Yes, Adrian Smith has a point. Let’s set aside the fact that I’d be shocked if he actually supported this initiative, considering he represents one of the nation’s most rural and low-density districts. The government should not be rudely intruding into the manner in which Americans travel and live and distorting market choices. If I were him, I’d be introducing legislation tomorrow to end:

All federal highway subsidies

Massive bureaucratic hoops that non-road transit projects have to jump through to be approved for construction

All homowner subsidies that encourage sprawl

All policies that discourage or even ban mixed-use development

Subsidies for fossil fuel development, direct and indirect alike

Agricultural subsidies that mostly allow for inefficient and unhealthy crops to remain competitive, thus artificially inflating demand for rural development

Right. Smith and his Republican colleagues don’t want to do any of that (with the possible exception of transit approval streamlining). So they really need to STFU about getting the government out of the way. The livability agenda isn’t about adding an extra layer of government involvement in the land use and planning process, it’s about balancing the incentives to correct for misguided policies of the past and match demand in an efficient manner.

Two weekends ago we drove over the mountains to Seattle, where N coached our Ethics Bowl team throug

Two weekends ago we drove over the mountains to Seattle, where N coached our Ethics Bowl team through their regional match and where I ran around the city with a good friend, thinking that there was something nice about being sheltered by skyscrapers again. The mountain passes between us and the city were slick and snowy, and we passed many fellow travelers who had met with accidents along the way. The ethics bowl team members are five college students, bright and earnest and funny. Someday they will rule the world but right now they seem so new to being adults – full to bursting of promise and potential, but also vulnerable. I’ve never been so aware of the weighty responsibility of driving other people’s children before. We drove very slowly and carefully, and the relief when we made it through the snow and slush was palpable. And maybe we made it safely through because we were careful, or maybe we were just lucky, or maybe it was both.

We’re so damned fragile, we human beings.

My Seattle friend has had a nearly unbelievable run of bad luck over the past two years: separation, divorce proceedings, discovery that her ex was having an affair before the separation, death of her very beloved dog, cancer scare, more ugly divorce proceedings, and, just when things were starting to look up, a really bad bicycle accident that left her with stitches and memory loss and broken bones and teeth. It’s starting to look like the run of bad luck may be over (knock on wood, knock on wood), but I’m still appalled that she had to go through so much all at once. It feels terribly random and unfair; she deserved none of this. It makes me understand how we come to believe in curses and hexes and the anger of gods. And it makes me feel lucky, which is almost funny since I still morph into Grief Girl on occasion, but I am also loved, employed, and lucky enough to be walking around with a belly full of baby.

Last week I found out that I don’t have gestational diabetes. I’m a perfect candidate for it – my grandmother has adult onset diabetes, my weight is well above what it should be, and N and I have both been hitting the after-dinner ice cream pretty hard. But GD is a fickle, unpredictable thing and can affect people who are health-conscious and who have perfect BMIs while leaving people like me alone. I have better health than I deserve, too.

I bounce between fear and happiness these days, trying not to dwell too much on consciously being happy. I still worry about tempting fate, even though fate is perfectly capable of coming down on me like a hammer no matter what I do. The fear is as real as the happiness, though perversely easier to acknowledge. It swells and ebbs in ways that remind my of my early grief, of the moments where I couldn’t move or talk for being so overwhelmed and of the strange moments where my brain would clear enough to finish projects, make dinner, pay bills, and breathe before I was pulled under again. I’ve never slept so poorly in my life, never been so much at the mercy of irrational superstitions, never had to work so hard to talk myself down from panics.

Memories keep rushing back, too. Dot’s kicks reminds me of Teddy’s kicks, her heartbeat seems to sound different on the doppler (I couldn’t tell you why, but I can’t stop comparing it to my memory of Teddy’s heartbeat). My body is shifting and changing to accommodate her in ways that are startlingly familiar. These memories are visceral, felt and tasted and smelled, and they’ve released more tears than I’ve cried in a while. I remember what it was like to be pregnant with Teddy in technicolor and surround sound even though this time is different, and I still miss him, am reminded that I’ll always miss him. This is not his time, and yet part of it is. It’s sweet and sad and sometimes knocks the breath right out of me. I hope Dot doesn’t mind sharing. If she does, some day, I hope I can make it up to her.

But here’s the thing. The grief doesn’t go away, but even with the onslaught of fear and memory, I can’t deny that this pregnancy is helping me to heal. It allows me a different perspective on my loss, new things to hope for, something I can hang on to. I’m so tired of letting things go and of trying to let things go. It’s a blessed relief to hang on to something and know that it’s okay. I’m so damned lucky, and completely undeserving.

CDOT just adopted what is basically Complete Streets policy. How relevant, considering they’re our neighbor, and that a Complete Streets Resolution is set for tomorrow night’s City Council agenda. If Complete Streets are important to you in Topeka, please call the city clerk’s office 368-3940 by 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 24 to sign up to speak for item 7B. Then, ride your bike to the city council meeting, and carry your helmet in with you.

Republished from BikeDenver.org

(Courtesy Alliance for Biking and Walking) – October 30, 2009

After more than two years of meetings and drafting language, Bicycle Colorado announced that the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) Transportation Commission has adopted a groundbreaking statewide Bicycle and Pedestrian Policy.

According to Bicycle Colorado, “The new policy directs that, ‘…the needs of bicyclists and pedestrians shall be included in the planning, design, and operation of transportation facilities, as a matter of routine…’

Division of Transportation Development Director Jennifer Finch stated, ‘This is a change in philosophy for the Department [of Transportation].’

The policy was moved by Commissioner George Krawzoff and seconded by Commissioner Steve Parker, leading to unanimous votes of support from all 11 commissioners.

Praise for CDOT’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator Betsy Jacobson’s diligent work on the policy was heard from Bicycle Colorado, Ms. Finch, and the Commissioners. Bicycle Colorado’s Executive Director Dan Grunig said, ‘We have passed positive bicycle legislation and overturned bike bans, but passing this policy may be the biggest step we’ve taken towards bicyclists being treated as legitimate road users.’

TWO YEAR PROCESS

Bicycle Colorado worked with CDOT for a number of years encouraging a formal bicycle and pedestrian policy. The Commission instructed CDOT staff in 2007 to begin evaluating its bicycle and pedestrian policies and practices. They convened a series of stakeholder meetings to determine areas to be addressed in policy and procedures. The resulting policy is a product of the input of all the stakeholders representing other state departments, local governments, and user groups. CDOT staff did a thorough job, gathering input from all their internal departments and divisions throughout the process.

NEXT STEPS

Adoption of this policy is a big step but there is still work to do. Implementation is the key to the policy’s success. Executive Director Russ George and the Executive Management Team will issue a Procedural Directive in the next couple of months detailing implementation plans.

The Directive will guide CDOT departments on how to incorporate bicyclist and pedestrian needs into road design, maintenance, transportation planning, education, etc. It will also detail the circumstances when projects may opt out of the policy and how that decision will be made available to the public. Bicycle Colorado will continue to participate in the process to ensure positive results for bicyclists.

Next up in my pantheon of stardom is John Altman, best-known as Nasty Nick Cotton from out of off of off of EastEnders.

Behind you!!!

I’d been meaning to mention the panto at Stevenage and John has forced my hand. So there I am in Tesco getting some bits for my son’s birthday party and who’s that inspecting the lettuce – my new best pal John. He’s playing the lead in Aladdin at the Gordon Craig Theatre, cultural beacon of Stevenage and the one landmark you could pick out from the train if you were just passing through.

Must be opening night soon. So are they putting John up in a swanky hotel somewhere nearby (the Ibis is perilously close) or have they found him a nice place to rent for a month? My money’s on the latter.

Checking a YouTube interview, John says he’s staying up in Henlow – that’s about 20 minutes away. Still reckon it’s a house.

In the meantime, you can keep up with rehearsals with this fascinating behind-the-wall, fly-on-the-scenes video-blog!

I first discovered Anna Beck jewelry on one of my sample sale Web sites, such as Hautelook, Ideeli or Billion Dollar Babes. Her jewels are very similar to some pieces that Stella & Dot offers, although not as colorful. These gold plated Riau Multi Drop Gold Earrings are $163 and the Anna Beck Gili Gold Multi Drop Earrings on the right are $275 (I know, they are practically the same earrings). The Garden Party Chandelier Earrings from Stella & Dot are on the company’s top 5 bestseller list for a reason: Hand-painted enamel dots on 14kt gold vermeil, all for just $54. Plus, they’re surprisingly lightweight and extremely wearable. Yep. You gotta love it.

We are all familiar to mosaics, because mosaic design reflects nature and how we see it. Newspaper and magazine photos are composed of lots of little colored dots, and digital photography is an arrangement of pixels or more colored “tiles”. Early people used mosaics for decoration, especially for homes, gardens, roads and walkways. The making of a mosaic, taking small pieces of permanent materials and forming them in abstract or representational designs is one of the earliest and most permanent art forms.

If we talk about the first mosaics, they were probably pebble walkways. It kept down the dust and mud, made the surface more permanent, and was more comfortable to feet. One can still enjoy ancient pebble walkways in China and Europe, created with different colored and shaped stones arranged in intricate patterns.

Five thousand years ago in ancient Babylon, or what is today Iraq and Syria, the Sumerians took mosaics off the prominent design elements, probably reflecting basketry and weaving patterns.

A little birdie told me that the inspiration behind the spring jewelry line and the catalog theme is linen. I have no idea what our designers have planned for us, but I’m sure it will be grogeous! For Spring, expect more pieces in the men’s line, more fabulous statement necklaces and possibly some items for girls and kids from Stella & Dot!

Deborah Farrar

Do you ever drive through a neighborhood and think it’s flawless? Perfect homes, perfect yards…everything just fits together like a glove. I love seeing these types of communities and apartment complexes. It’s exciting to me to see when the signs accompanying the communities are in unison with the vision the designer had. I think an excellent example of unity with signage and the community it represents would be Prairie Lakes in Noblesville, Indiana. I’m proud to say that the company I work for, Redirections Sign & Design, produced the signage for this community.

Prairie Lakes Monument Sign

There are many considerations to look at when you are choosing signage for the community it is representing. A few things would be the style of the building, budget, look or feel of the community of the signs you are looking for. You also have many options when it comes to signage: Posts can be made of wood (painted or unpainted), metal posts, finials or no finials (in other words, decorative additions to the posts), the type of street blades.

Here is an example:

Street Blade

There are so many different styles of street blades and brackets, types of street signage (standard DOT signs or of course, custom signs). All of these are considerations whether you are an apartment community or residential community. If you have any questions or need help in designing your community signage, Redirections would be happy to guide you through the process or help you with your community project.

After the years I have spent in the transportation industry, and being a driver over the road. I ask

After the years I have spent in the transportation industry, and being a driver over the road. I asked myself how could the government, such as the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Department of Transportation crack down as hard as they have done on the truck drivers lack of sleep when driving a big rig, and not do the same for the drivers who are driving RV’s or motor coaches, and even just people in regular vehicles.

In the few years I drove over the road, I had seen first hand almost accidents caused by motor coaches and cars as well as fatal accidents caused from these types of vehicles. How much do you see in the media relevant to an accident that has been involved by a car, RV and semi-truck that states the first thing is “the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel”?

They go thru log books like a fine tooth comb, receipts of delivery, pickups, fuel ticket etc. and even in some cases the company may receive an audit. But how many of us driving our normal cars have drove until we nodded off our heads and decided that was the time to pull over? Like many of us, there is no delegation for the time that we drive our vehicles like the government delegates the operational hours of a truck driver and how long they are allowed to drive. Although semi-trucks are larger vehicles and can cause a lot more damage when involved in a collision, the probability has been overlooked with motor coaches and regular cars have the capability to add to such horrendous collisions as well and has for way too long.

The difference however, with a motor coach and a car, a motor coach maneuvers similar to a semi-truck and trailer. If you have a pick up truck and you are pulling a trailer that is as well similar to how the operation of a semi-truck and trailer work also. You can not park in regular parking, you have to pay attention to the weather, roads, wind and give your self plenty of space. But often times people who operate these have your typical Class A drivers license to operate them, and can or has caused incidents that have fatalities as well.

Now the Department of Transportation is stepping up to the plate as they should have a long time ago. Monday November 16, 2009 the Department of Transportation released their action plan to motor coach safety issues. Here is just a portion of what they have released.

“The U.S. Department of Transportation today released its Motor coach Safety Action Plan which lays out concrete steps for improving motor coach safety across the board. The action plan addresses major safety issues such as driver fatigue and inattention, vehicle rollover, occupant ejections and oversight of unsafe carriers.”

To read the rest of the article released “U.S. Department of Transportation Releases New Action Plan to Address Motorcoach Safety Issues”

I think this is a great implementation to the Department of Transportation, and might even just take some of the pressure off the truck driver schemata.

Classmates (dot) com – http://www.classmates.com

I am relatively new to the website, but I wanted to jot down some great ways to start reaching out to your old classmates.

Join Communities
(high school, college, and employers)

When you join communities you will be instantly connected with other members who share the same background. For instance, when I entered my high school and the years I attended, I was able to immediately see a list of members who had been at my high school during those years. I could also narrow down the list to see members who graduated the same year as me.

On each list, you will have the option to view other members profiles, send a message to them, or send them a friend request.

Utilize Communities

After becoming a part of a community there are a variety of options open to you. The website provides standard pages for each community. On my high school’s site the tabs include: school home, member list, message board, and photo albums.

The website also has homepages for each graduated class. Class pages have tabs that include: class home, member list, message board, photo albums, announcements, and events.

Take time to explore these options.

Gold Membership (optional)

Right now the website is offering an annual gold membership for $9.95 (it states the normal rate is $39). Gold membership offers distinct benefits.

View guestbook signatures

See where friends live now

Read all your bulletin board notes

Send Classmates Email anyone can read

Read all Classmates Email you receive

Plan reunions and events

Personally, I do not have the Gold Membership. However, for marketing purposes, it may be a wise decision to have the opportunities listed above.

My Review

It’s a good website, that serves a distinct purpose. The only advantage that I have seen so far is in marketing. On Facebook, advertising can only target graduates of a specific college and not a high school.

Recently, a client had the need to target his high school classmates. For now, Facebook does not offer the option to target graduates of any high school, just students who are currently in high school. For my client, Classmates.com was the best option for his needs because the gold membership gave them the option of e-mailing classmates directly.

I will continue to explore this site, and perhaps provide an update in the future.

BEWARE: The website is advertisement heavy — Way too much. It feels intrusive. I still prefer Facebook, but this is specifically for reconnecting with classmates (obviously).

Yay! Some pictures of my actual work!! Docs can be cool too! Well, if you think graphs are cool… Which for the record, I do.

Even though I am still having another issue, I seem to have Dehydra working well enough to generate some docs. Basically ignoring the previous issue, I came across:

set -e; \
for class in `cat graphtypes.list`; do \
dot -Tpng -o${class}-graph.png -Tcmapx -o${class}-graph.map ${class}-graph.gv; \
done
/bin/sh: line 2: dot: command not found
make: *** [classapi] Error 127

This happens to be a nice, soothing error at this point. I found the dot command and tried
yum search "directed graphs"
which pointed me to Graphviz.

A quick
yum install graphviz
later and no problem! Up above are a couple of the graphs generated for what I will be making for the MDC.

Hubby and I went to see my OBGYN today. This was the first time meeting, but I think we are going to have a great relationship

Hubby was nervous because he thought I was getting my annual pap done as well, but I told him that I canceled it and just made an appt to talk with the doctor.

The doctor was really nice. She asked about our backgound, what our sex schedule is, and when I started having dot problems. We gave her the rough draft and she listened. I told her that I have had some issues losing weight and she thought that that could be the problem as to why I wasn’t ovulating. She asked when we were having sex and she suggested that we get the BD’ing on about twice a week just to play it safe. She of course told me that I have to change my diet and start getting in the routine of exercising. She said that I could have some form of PCOS or that I could have some kind of metabolism problem. She suggested that I could try Metformin (1000mg/daily) and see if it will jumpstart my ovaries into ovulating themselves…. She had me to get some labs done and also sent a referal to a RE since we have been TTC’ing for over a year and a half now….

I get my lab results tomorrow and I should be hearing from the RE soon. The doctor also suggested that hubby get a SA done as well… So we’ll see how long it takes him… Ha!

I emailed my doc to see if it was ok to continue taking the FertileCM along with the Metformin… If I hear back from her tomorrow, I’ll start the Metformin tomorrow night. The doc said that if I didn’t have a “healthier” diet, I can have some gnarly side effects from Metformin… So I think I’m going to change my diet instead if risking it…

I am really eager to get this ball rolling! I know I can do it.

Wish me luck!!
The topper is a beautiful fresh flower combination of red tulips and red roses. The arrangement was created by Ellis Florist of Harrodsburg, KY.

Happy New Year from your Aircomplane.com Spite Attendant Crew. Well, one would have to live in a cav

Happy New Year from your Aircomplane.com Spite Attendant Crew.

Well, one would have to live in a cave (or a snowbank) to have missed some of the travel nightmares that took place across the country. Blizzards and other bad weather certainly wreaked havoc with thousands of flights, and more than one of you probably spent the night in an airport.

Well, the e-mails to us about the bad behavior perpetrated by many of the airlines has started to come in. And while we are sorting through and answering them, it occurred to us that we can share the benefit of our experience with you here if you encountered some particularly horrific treatment by the airlines. And we’re not sure we have to say this, but keep in mind that bad weather is not their fault. Responding to bad weather and how any changes affect you IS their responsibility. Snow wasn’t just invented yesterday, and weather reports are increasingly reliable. It’s part of that industry. But from our mail, however, some fright attendants just seemed to make matters worse. Keep in mind that you are the customer. Be reasonable and expect reasonably professional and respectful behavior and service. Those airline employees working the aisles and the counters are there because you bought a ticket on their airline (theoretically). Demand respect.

That said, here are some guidelines that may help you in the event you encountered a particularly gruesome or abusive trip.

1) Follow the rules one more time. If you have a complaint, file it in accordance with the airlines’ policies. Get on the record, and mark the date. Make at least three sincere attempts to reach them by phone, and log everything.
2) Record the circumstances of your event while they are still fresh in your mind. Write them down or audio or video record them. Things get fuzzy later.
3) Take names. Many people who work for the airlines try very hard to be accommodating and helpful. You are doing your fellow travelers a service by helping to identify the other ones. Include names in your correspondence to the airline.
4) Wait a reasonable amount of time for a response. Let your impatience be your guide.
5) File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Transportation Aviation Consumer Protection Division. Here’s the form. It is also located on Aircomplane.com’s home page off to the right.
6) Write your Spite Attendant Crew here at Aircomplane.com. We post many of the episodes we receive, and having your complaint as a link on Aircomplane.com makes it a tad easier to include in on-line correspondence and to share with “others.” Try to keep it somewhat clean and constructive, and let us know if we can use your name.

We’ll be posting more soon. Remember, you are the customer. You spent your money for a service, and you should expect respect and to have every attempt made to fulfill that which you contracted for. Would you expect anything less from a car dealer, homebuilder, retail establishment, or medical or legal professional? Some airlines will continue to feign immunity to civilized and professional behavior while hiding behind bailouts and threatened bankruptcy, but don’t let them. They were not DRAFTED into the airline industry. They are there by choice. If they can’t or won’t do the job while treating customers with the respect they deserve, then they should eject.

Ahlul-athar.net expresses their utter disgust at any acts of extremism and terrorism committed by th

Ahlul-athar.net expresses their utter disgust at any acts of extremism and terrorism committed by the Khawaarij and the likes, those that of Al-Qaedah and their ilk. Such unjustified outbursts of wanton violence are against Islam and Islam does not ever justify kidnappings, suicide bombings and other acts of terrorism . It is rather disheartening that some of the Maldvian youth are getting deluded into believing that these acts are Jihaad and from Islaam. We call the youth to return back to the original state of affairs, and to know that knowledge precedes action, and it is not the other way around!

We call those who are known as “Dots” and their ilk to not be beguiled by the beautified speech of simpeltons who have no knowledge of this beautiful Deen, and who are misguided and far astray from the Creed of the righeous salaf. And the recent video footage of the pseudo “Mujaahid” Ali Jaleel, then we say he has lot to learn of this beautiful Deen. It is not for him to call the scholars to go to him, but it is for him and his likes to go to the scholars themselves! It is a shame that this man does not know the great priniciple of Islaam, that knowledge precedes statements and actions!

And in this regard we also call the so called Liberalists and Modernists to not judge Islaam with the acts of the Khawaarij! Rather it is upon you too to return back to the original of affairs! And we say, do not accuse us of your own iniquities!

We, the Ahlus-Sunnah, the Salafis, the Ahlul-Athar, are free from the extremist and terrorist acts of America, the Jewish State and also those of Al-Qaeda and their ilk! We are clear from them and they are clear from us!

We also refer readers to the following websites, which has the writings of our scholars and our students of knowledge who clearly and totally refutes vigilante behaviour enacted by individuals and also who unequivocally denounce extremism, terrorism and violence:

Oh, Reese, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways: Beauty, brains, talent, compassion and practicality — near perfection, really. Her photos in the November 2009 issue of InStyle put me in the mood for the holidays. Her gilded dress took center stage for her cover look and the strapless yellow number transformed from cheery, summertime staple to holiday-party-ready with the grace of a single blazer. She proves that you can look amazing with fierce accessories and without breaking the bank.

These looks, straight from the pages of InStyle, are very well-priced — the most expensive item is the LBD for about $650! You gotta love it!

For the cover look (my favorite!), Reese wore a DKNY gold strapless dress, Sid Vintage necklaces and a black Brooks Brothers blazer. Her yellow strapless dress is from French Connection, black stilettos from Aldo, and a grey wool blazer from Brooks Brothers with a Fallon necklace. The look on the far right features a Alexander Wang dress, black leather cutout heels from Aldo, cuffs from Dannijo and necklaces from Roxanne Assoulin For Lee Angel.

The dresses are perfection (and, really, why mess with perfection?) and they are well priced, so I wouldn’t dare suggest any look-alike items. For the blazer, check out the black blazer from the Lauren Conrad Collection for Kohl’s. The Aldo shoes shown on Reese are great quality, but if you want something around $50, check out the styles below from Sheik Shoes. And for the jewelry, of course check out Stella & Dot! Layer on several pieces to get the same look as Reese and you’ll be ready for any holiday party, anytime, anywhere!
