Author: Wellington W

Strength and conditioning: Up Downs

Up downs is an excellent conditioning drill, drills
, that will improve reaction time and, drills
, endurance. Players will start this drill by running in place as fast as they can, keeping, drills
, their knees high as possible. At the coaches signal the players will drop to, drills
, the ground and do a push up, and then quickly get back up and start running, drills
, again. As up downs require endurance and strength, players are encouraged to start in slow short burst and work up to longer and more intense sessions.

Tackling Fundamentals, drills
, and, drills
, Safety

Tackling is fundamental to football, and should, drills
, receive proper attention at practices. If you, or your players don’t take tackling seriously you will not, drills
, stop the offense and could also cause injuries. Here are three important steps to practice:

First, you need to stop the opponent quickly so make sure to place yourself directly in front of the opponent’s, drills
, path. Plant your cleats in the, drills
, grass squarely in front, drills
, and in the middle, bisecting the player in half. Also, at this time thrust your arms backward to prepare for the next step.

Second you want to bring your other foot into the mix, and at the same time throw your arms up and around your opponent. Now is the time that injuries can happen. The one golden rule in making a safe tackle is, drills
, to never, ever lead with or try to tackle with the crown of your head. You need, drills
, to literally imagine, drills
, that the football is a big hamburger and you want to bite it and not slam your forehead against it.

Third, at this point you,, drills
, drills
, have successfully grabbed your opponent and all that’s left is to lunge your hips forward and bear all of your momentum against your opponent. Setting yourself up for this last step will ultimately prove the success in the tackle.

Conditioning:, drills
,, drills
, The Quick Jump, drills
,

Conditioning in football is meant to help you react quickly on the field moving in a variety of directions. This drill will help players quickly change, drills
,, drills
, directions on the field. The drill takes place in small four corner area that you can draw out or use the lines of the field. The drill starts by having a player stand in one area or box, and has them jump diagonally, laterally, frontwards,, drills
, and backwards from one area to another. Coaches should encourage one foot jumping to increase further strength and reactions on the field, drills
, .

Conditioning: Dot drilling

Conditioning drills are effective in training and helping athletes be strong and reactive. The intent of this drill is to increase accuracy, timing, and, drills
, speed. Setting up this drill is very simple, you will need five markers placed about, drills
, a foot apart in an x formation with one of the dots being in the center surrounded by four other dots in a square formation, drills
, .

This drill begins with the player starting on two of the outer dots and jumps feet, drills
, together to the middle dot and then, drills
, out again to the edge dots separating their feet. The second phase is having the player touch each of the, drills
, dots with only one foot, and, drills
, then switch to the other foot, drills
, . The next step is jumping on all five dots with both feet together. The last phase is really returning to the original starting phase of jumping together and apart, however this time the athlete will change, drills
, directions after they have jumped to the outer dots. Players will need to increase their speed and accuracy to be effective with this drill.

 Conditioning Drill: Up Downs

Out of all of the football conditioning drills up downs is one of the most, right-angle drills
, popular. This drill starts by having the players run in place as fast as they can encourage them to get their knees up as high as they can. At the coaches signal the players will drop to the ground and do a push up, and then quickly get back up and start running again. Because this drill can be very taxing, it is important to increase the time spent at this slowly over time as the player’s strength increases.

Drive Block

Simple drives are important for linemen, right-angle drills
, to practice and perfect. Hence the name for the most common drive: the drive block. It is a simple yet effective way to move your opponent. If the Defensive lineman is aligned slightly to the right of the offensive linemen then the drive block, right-angle drills
, with pus, right-angle drills
, the defender to the right. When executing this block start with your play side foot, meaning if the play is on the right side of, right-angle drills
, you it will be your right foot. Connect hard against, right-angle drills
, your opponent, bring your other foot into play and continue to drive in the aligned direction.

Conditioning: The five dot drill

Conditioning drills are effective in training and helping athletes be strong and reactive. This drills intention is to help quickness and accuracy on the field which will, right-angle drills
, reduce errors and increase the chances of great plays. In order to execute the drill you will need a place with five dots, either marked on the grass or on a mat, forming an x shape much like the dots for the number five side of dice.

This drill, right-angle drills
,, right-angle drills
, begins with the player starting on two of the outer dots and jumps feet together to the middle dot and then out again to the edge dots separating their feet. The second phase is having the player touch each of the dots with only one foot, and then switch to the other foot. The next step is jumping on all five dots with both feet together. The end step is similar to the first jumping jack step except that this time the player will turn 180 degrees after jumping on the two dots. Remember that, right-angle drills
, speed and accuracy are important on this drill so coaches should start players off slow and then proceed to full speed constantly watching accuracy, right-angle drills
, .

Secrets to a good hand off

Learning the basics in a handoff is essential to a strong offense. The hand off can take place in many ways, but most if not all handoffs occur between the quarterback and the running back. A good hand off starts with, right-angle drills
, the running, right-angle drills
, back giving a target to the quarterback, this can be done in the running back, right-angle drills
, keeping his arms flat against, right-angle drills
, his body,, right-angle drills
, one arm low and the other high creating an open square or target around the chest for the quarterback to slide the ball in. Once the quarterback has placed the ball in the pocket, or opening, the running back immediately clamps down on the ball protecting it and holding on to it. As the running back leaves from the handoff he needs to stay low to react quickly and again to protect the ball.

, of great plays. Setting up this drill is very simple, you will need five markers placed about a foot apart, drills
, in an x formation with one of the dots being in the center surrounded by four other dots in a square formation.

This drill, drills
, begins with the player starting on two, drills
, of the outer dots and jumps feet together to the middle dot and then out again to the edge dots separating their feet. Next proceed around the dots, drills
, one at a time jumping with one leg only,, drills
, and then change to the other leg. After this, the player will touch all of the dots with, drills
, both feet together, drills
, . The last phase is really returning to the original starting phase of jumping together, drills
, and apart, however this time the athlete will change directions after they have jumped, drills
, to the, drills
, outer dots,, drills
, drills
, . Players will need to increase their speed and accuracy to be effective with this drill.

Conditioning: Cross jumping

Reaction is as skill that players need to develop through conditioning and drills, drills
, . The point to this drill is having players practice, drills
, quick directional changes on the field. It starts by placing players in a small four square box. The, drills
, drill starts, drills
, by having a player stand in one area or box, and has them jump diagonally, laterally, frontwards, and backwards from one area to another. Changes can be made so that the player will only use one foot and then the other while they run the drill.

On this, the fifth day of Hanukkah, we present you with the gift that keeps on giving: a new episode of everyone’s favorite cousin-hosted podcast, S’up Cuz?! As always, you’re welcome.

A few thoughts on this week’s episode:

1. This was the first episode we recorded with Michael in Memphis and me in Chicago. The sheer technical complexity of how I did it would surely crash the Internet, so let’s just say it’s a technical miracle and the editing took more time than I anticipated. Hopefully the audio quality (particularly Michael’s, since there’s a big difference between his setup and mine) will improve each week.

2. I don’t like Phil Collins. Pretty sure that comes across loud and clear.

3. You’ll hear us make a pitch to Dippin’ Dots for sponsorship. It’s a pretty terrible pitch as we make our desire to “just get paid for this stuff” pretty clear, but it’s also honest and rooted in real events. So, Dippin’ Dots management, if you’re reading this, we’re ready to sell out and you can email us at supcuzpodcast@gmail.com.

4. Michael unveiled our first/worst listener contest ever. You’ll have to check out the podcast for details.

We may or may not be on hiatus next week. We’ll see how busy Michael’s party keeps him.

And finally, we leave you with this video clip from this week’s Good Enough To Netflix: Crossroads (1986), starring Ralph Macchio of Karate Kid 3 fame. In this scene, Daniel-son’s character is battling the devil’s guitarist for the soul of his friend, who sold it to the devil years ago for blues guitar prowess. No kidding. I couldn’t begin to make this stuff up.

Author: Wellington W Source: add-articles.com Conditioning Drill: Up Downs Out of all of the footbal

Author: Wellington W
Source: add-articles.com

Conditioning Drill: Up Downs

Out of all of the football conditioning drills up downs is one of the most popular. This drill starts by having the players run in place as fast as they can encourage them to get their knees up as high as they can. At the coaches signal the players will drop to the ground and do a push up, and then quickly get back up and start running again, drills
, . Because this drill can be very taxing, it is, drills
,, drills
, important to increase the time spent at this slowly, drills
, over, drills
, time as the player’s strength increases.

Drive Block

Simple, drills
, drives are important for linemen to practice and perfect. Hence the name for the most common, drills
, drive: the, drills
, drive block. It is a simple yet effective way to move your, drills
, opponent. If the Defensive lineman is aligned slightly to the right of the offensive linemen then the drive block with pus the defender to the right. When executing this block start with your play side foot, meaning if the, drills
, play is on the right side of you it will be your right foot. Connect hard against your opponent, bring your other foot into play and continue to drive in the aligned direction, drills
, .

Conditioning: The, drills
, five dot drill

Conditioning drills are effective in training and helping athletes be strong and reactive. This drills intention, drills
, is to help quickness and accuracy on the field which will, drills
, reduce errors and increase the chances of great plays. In order to execute the drill you will need a place with five dots, either marked on the grass or on a mat, forming an x shape much like the dots for the number five side of dice.

This drill begins with the player starting on two of the outer dots and jumps feet together to the middle dot and then out again to the edge, drills
, dots separating their feet. The second, drills
, phase is having the player touch each, drills
, of the dots, drills
, with only, drills
, one foot, and then switch to the other foot. The next step is jumping on all five dots with both, drills
, feet together. The end step is similar to the first jumping jack step except, drills
, that this time the player will turn 180 degrees after jumping on the two dots. Remember that speed and accuracy are important, drills
, on this drill, drills
, so coaches should, drills
, start players off slow and then proceed to full speed constantly watching accuracy.

Secrets to a good hand off

Learning the basics in a handoff is essential to a strong, drills
, offense. The hand off can take place in many ways, but most if not all handoffs occur between the quarterback and the running back. A good hand off starts with the running back giving a target to the quarterback, this can be done in the running back keeping his arms flat, drills
, against his body, one arm, drills
, low and the other high creating an open square or target, drills
,, drills
, around the chest for the quarterback, drills
, to slide the ball in. Once the quarterback has placed the ball in the pocket, or opening, the running back immediately clamps down on the ball protecting it and holding on to it. As the running back leaves from the handoff he needs to stay low to react quickly and again to protect the ball.

Christmas came a little early! I met a jeweler in October, who is married to an upholsterer, who called me last week and asked me if I wanted some fabric.

I tried to limit myself to two bags, but took three, and I may go back for some more silks. It was all so beautiful and neatly folded and sorted by color and/or fiber type.

Truly made my day — my week — my month?

But, here’s the thing. As I fall down the rabbit hole of blogging and find one amazing quilter after another, three of whom, say, then lead me to another set of amazing quilters (perhaps in the comments of the first batch of fiber artists), and then I find ten other amazing quilters on a sidebar somewhere in there, and I am feasting my eyes in wonder and appreciation…. I am falling, falling down this seemingly endless tunnel of creation thinking — can I possibly slow down long enough, commit long enough, pursue long enough, to create a signature?

And here’s another thing, I am starting to wonder how I can continue to be a quilter who merely SEWS when all the work that most excites me these days seems to involve dying, bleaching, wringing, aging, distressing, and intense surface embellishment.

So, while I LOVE, love, love these dots — part of me is judging them for being premade dots — dots that I have not fashioned with my hand, dots that are not imposed by rust or clamps or applique. They are velour-ish designer dots.

There is more to say about this that has to do with learning/imitating/finding one’s true palette/tempo/scale/approach, that I am much too tired to take on at this moment.

But let me say that in falling down this rabbit hole lined with pictures, I am aware that I have to preserve a rhythm, a confidence, a pursuit, that is all my own.

Which is difficult this time of year because even though I have some time my basement-space is too cold to work in right now. And for some reason, I am feeling determined to keep the upstairs looking festive and if cluttered, cluttered with Christmas things.

I guess I am taking a break. I am wondering if I want a “word” to inform a series of quilts, like Jude Hill and others who follow Jude are thinking about… And what would my word be? I have been collecting fabrics for awhile now that have a script-like quality — perhaps what I want to explore is the shape and nature of writing itself, and not a particular word. Take this wisteria, for example — I feel its twists and turns as a kind of language, one that very definitely resembles writing.

Lastly, I am mulling over the idea of taking on one master quilter a month and consciously making a single piece that does homage to their style, content, and approach (as I understand them), as a way to learn, as a way to more directly work with this whole tricky business of learning by imitation and making something one’s own.

But don’t worry — I love my velour-ish designer dots and have the utmost faith that they will be well used in the coming year!

It was a lovely place to live (as you can see below) with beautiful bushland behind and only a short walk through that bushland to a very private and secluded beach on the shores of the waters of Lakes Entrance. The house is still there (as I have just discovered via google maps) and still looks the same as it did 30 or so years ago.

I was an adventurous child, and one day I climbed up on the railing of the front verandah so that I could sit on it, swing my legs over the edge and watch the world go by. Unfortunately, my balance was not as great as my sense of adventure and it was only a few moments before I fell to the ground below with a thud.

With the wind knocked out of me, I lay there for a moment, before putting my hands down beside me to raise myself up from the ground. It was then that I felt the bite. I pulled my hand up quickly and looked down to see a Redback spider slowly crawling away from the scene of the crime.

Now even though I was very young, I lived in the Australian bush and therefore our parents had taught us from a very early age about what creatures around us might hurt us and what we should do if they did. With that in mind, I squished the spider quickly with my thumb, picked it up and, still hurting a bit from the fall, walked into the house to my mother who was standing in the kitchen and told her what happened.

When she saw the dead spider in my hand she sprung into action, whisking me off to a neighbours house in order to get a lift to the local hospital.

I don’t really remember much more of the story, although I have been told that on the way to the hospital I became quite ill and the area around the bite started to swell a lot.

After all this, anyone would think that I would have a major hatred of Redback spiders and their ilk, but no. Instead since then I have, felt somewhat of an affinity with them. I found myself being more greatful that at one of the only times time in my life when such a bite could have been potentially fatal, the little creature did nothing more than make me feel a bit poorly and leave me with a bit of a yarn to tell.

That affinity promped me, in the mid 90’s, to create something celebrating both the awesomeness of my friend the Redback and my love of modern and traditional Aboriginal Art, and so my piece ‘Redback Dreaming’ was born.

Now, once again working from a photograph (the original piece residing back in Australia with my brother and his family), I have created a range featuring this design and posted it for sale at ‘Lee Lee and the Bee‘ for the world to enjoy.

 Running Drills, drills
, are a big help

If you have more energy at the fourth, drills
, quarter then your opponent then you have won, and the best way to get endurance are running drills. Running drills will help you gain stamina so that you, drills
, will be able to play to your full extent, drills
, throughout the game. Though running drills can be a big help to your game, many people complain the most about the running. Whether you are tired, exhausted, and ready to throw up, if you keep running your added strength will help you win games. Running has a final help to your team,, drills
, and that is learning how to push beyond your limits, you will be surprised, drills
, how often that happens in football, and in life

Strip Tackling, drills
,

There is a golden rule in football defense, get the ball to the offensive team as quickly as possible,, drills
, drills
, . The fastest way to gain possession of the ball is to force an offensive player to fumble the football. A great way to practice is have two players line up, one as the defense, the other with the football as the offense. As the offender runs ahead of the defender, have the defender bring his clenched hands up quickly, and forcefully, as he aims his hand at offender’s football. This drill is most effective if you start, drills
, it slow focusing on the motions, drills
, needed to be effective, and then, drills
, speed up over time.

Conditioning: The five dot drill

Conditioning is meant, drills
, to increase speed, endurance,, drills
, and reaction, drills
, time on the football field. This drills intention is to help quickness, drills
, and accuracy, drills
, on the field which will reduce errors and increase the chances of great plays. Setting up this drill is very simple, you will need five markers placed about a foot apart in an x formation with one of the dots being in the center surrounded by four other dots in a square formation, drills
, .

The player will start by placing a foot on, drills
, the back two dots and then jumps together to the middle dot, drills
, and then out separating his legs to the outer dots, much like you would see in hop scotch. The, drills
, second phase is having the player touch each of the dots with only one foot, and then switch to the other foot. The next step is jumping on all five dots with both feet together. The last phase is really returning to the original starting phase of jumping together and apart,, drills
, however this time the athlete will change directions, drills
, after they have jumped to the outer dots. Remember, drills
, that speed and accuracy are important on this drill so coaches should start players off slow and then proceed, drills
, to full speed constantly watching accuracy.

The Proper, drills
, Way to Catch a High Football

As a receiver,, drills
, or any player that is going to catch a pass, you know that not all passes are going to go right, drills
, to the chest. As such you need to practice the high passes so, drills
, that you know to react, here, drills
, are some basics: When you go to make the high catch extend your arms, but keep your hands close together with your, drills
, hands coming, drills
, together in a diamond formation. When you have your hands extended you, drills
, are performing a proper catch, remember, and don’t ever catch it with your body. Important to look the catch through and tuck it away. When you practice a high catch you are going to perform it subconsciously on the field, so remember extend the arms, catch and follow through.

I took this quilt on the train from Seattle to Portland this past weekend to sew down the binding. My Mother-in-Law named it. It’s been waiting patiently for more than a year to be finished. The flannel gives it a rich feel. I so wish I had made it Katie size. I’d wrap myself in it right now.

I am having the hardest time getting clear pictures of it. It’s way brighter than the photos. It’s freezing here, so the name has a few meanings.

I did wavy stitches similar to the design lines on one of the flannel prints. It’s a mix of unknown flannels, Amy Butler flannels and quilting weight and a bit of Heather Ross.

The back is mostly this white print flannel with little squares running across.

This is an Improvisational piece really. I just cut the squares and rectangles and arranged them on the design wall till I liked it. When I get myself with an Etsy shop I’ll add it.

An estimated 8 million tuberculosis-related deaths have been averted over the last 15 years through

An estimated 8 million tuberculosis-related deaths have been averted over the last 15 years through aggressive global efforts to combat this ancient and deadly epidemic, according to a new report released today by the World Health Organization.

Dr. Mario Raviglione, of the World Health Organization, highlights success in treating TB

The epidemiological report, which provides more up-to-date figures than usual, says there were an estimated 9.4 million new cases of tuberculosis in 2008, a slight increase from the 9.3 million new cases in 2007. The disease claimed more than 1.8 million lives last year, including .5 million women.

Despite the continued global threat posed by TB, and reflected in the report’s new numbers, WHO officials said significant strides have been made in treating the disease. Over the last 15 years, an estimated 36 million patients have been cured of TB, Dr. Mario Raviglione, director of WHO’s Stop TB Department, said at a Congressional briefing to unveil the WHO report.

“We are now getting to the level of very high success rates,” Dr. Raviglione said of treatment under the DOTS strategy, or Directly Observed Therapy Short-Course. An estimated 87 percent of patients globally were successfully treated using DOTS, he said, marking the first time the global 85 percent treatment goal was surpassed since being set in 1991.

He noted that even in some countries with a high HIV burden, which fuels the TB epidemic, TB treatment has been successful. “That’s partly due to antiretrovirals being used abundantly in those countries,” he said. Still, in some parts of Africa, up to one percent of the population gets TB every year, “which is extraordinary,” Dr. Raviglione said.

Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., who also spoke at the briefing, said Congress must not falter in its commitment to fighting TB.

Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y., called it "reprehensible that we allow over a half a million women to die each year of a preventable, treatable disease."

“It’s truly reprehensible that we allow over a half a million women to die each year of a preventable, treatable disease,” Rep. Engel said. “We must continue to be absolutely vigilant” in pushing for robust funding levels, to ensure that commitments made in last year’s Lantos-Hyde bill, which reauthorized PEPFAR, are fulfilled. The Lantos-Hyde law calls for spending $4 billion over the next five years to combat TB.

Engel also noted the need for new TB drugs, diagnostics, and an effective vaccine. “We cannot do a 21st century cure with a 20th century prescription,” he said. “And we’ll never defeat TB without a new and effective vaccine.”

The report did not include new data about MDR-TB. WHO officials said they plan to release data on drug-resistant TB in March, to coincide with World TB Day. Raviglione did say that MDR-TB is not being adequately detected in most resource-poor settings, because of poor diagnostic and lab capabilities and because “countries are not taking it seriously.”

Richard Greene, director of the Office of Health, Infectious Diseases, and Nutrition at USAID, said the US would not back down on its commitment to TB. He noted that the President’s budget is due out on Feb. 15 and would include key funding details about the White House’s proposed Global Health Initiative.

Christine Lubinski, of IDSA, said "we have a long way to go" to reach adequate US funding for global TB control

But Christine Lubinski, vice president for global health at the Infectious Diseases Society of America and moderator of the Congressional briefing, noted that “we have a long way to go” to get from the approximately $160 million the US currently devotes to TB to the $650 million authorized in Lantos-Hyde.
