Monster trucks started terrorizing smaller defenseless cars in the early 1980s, when a behemoth call

Monster trucks started terrorizing smaller defenseless cars in the early 1980s, when a behemoth called Bigfoot performed the first-ever public crushing. Since then, the beasts have grown in size and left countless vehicles demolished in their dirt-covered paths.

Tom Meents will attempt to perform a double back flip in Maximum Destruction. Photo courtesy of Feld Entertainment.

Today, monster trucks are typically 12 feet tall and about 12 feet wide, weighing as much as 12,000 pounds. Tires are 66 inches high and 43 inches wide. And with all that size comes
not only ferocious power, but remarkable agility. Like a graceful gymnast, these vehicular monstrosities take to the air, flying high and before sticking a landing.

As in any sport, monster trucks have its superstars who push the boundaries and set new benchmarks.

This Father’s Day weekend, 10-time champion, Tom Meents, will do just that in his Maximum Destruction truck at Monster Jam.

Held at MetLife stadium in New Jersey, spectators—including Meents’ 14-year-old daughter, Hannah—will witness him attempt the first-ever double back flip.

In 2009 Meents became the first driver to perform a single back flip in the truck. And since then, he’s been eager to take it to the next level. Especially because several other Monster Jam competitors have completed flips as well. “I’ve never wanted to be an imitator, I always wanted to be the main man,” he says.

Meents and his five-man team built a special truck for the double flip stunt, which includes additional safety features.

10-time champion Tom Meents stands in front of his monster truck. Photo courtesy of Feld Entertainment.

“To rotate a 10,000-lb. truck in air twice will not be easy,” he admits. “It’s going to take some timing, different ways to set the truck up, and most importantly it’s going to take a go-for-it-all attitude.”

Meents will approach the 12-foot, near-vertical launch ramp at about 50 mph from about 200 feet away.

“There’s a 50% chance we make it, 50% we won’t,” Meents says. “But we’re 100% going for it.”

The Maximum Destruction driver has known no other job in the last 20 years and has remained injury free, despite flipping over more than 300 times.

“I’ve never been seriously hurt, though I’ve had some Monday morning pain,” he says.

He’s also crushed thousands of cars and school buses. All of Monster Jam’s sacrificial vehicles are gathered from local junkyards and are returned after each event.

But Meents doesn’t limit his demolition to modes of transportation. When Maximum Destruction earned him enough money to buy a new home, he naturally crushed the old one.

Yet, despite such experiences, this upcoming Father’s Day will be Meents’ most dangerous yet.

“I’m excited and worried at the same time,” daughter Hannah says. “I think it’s cool what he’s doing, but worried he’ll be ok.”

Of course, she’s been around monster truck mayhem her entire life.

“Dad is a go-for-it guy, so the family lets me do it,” Meents says. “I’ve been crazy since before she was born.”

Recently I was on a shoot in southern Utah with a Red Bull crew, there to capture Paul Basagoitia’s

Recently I was on a shoot in southern Utah with a Red Bull crew, there to capture Paul Basagoitia’s attempt at the first-ever double back flip on a mountain bike in natural terrain. I’ve worked with Paul many times and was excited to be there to photograph his attempt. If anyone could pull it off, it was Paul.

Double backflips have been done on man-made wooden ramps, dirt jump tracks and foam pits, but never in a natural environment. The jump was out in the desert, on a ridge exposed to the wind, with a bumpy, off-camber in-run to a quick, tricky takeoff and a steep, slippery landing. It wasn’t an ideal situation and the consequences were high. He could easily get injured in the attempt.

Every one knew this was a one shot deal, and if he pulled it off there would be no second attempt. We couldn’t miss the shot. There were two angles I really liked, so to get them both, I put a second camera (Nikon D3) with a fisheye lens on a tripod close to the jump with a PocketWizard Plus III attached to it and set myself in the other location 200-plus yards away with another Plus III unit on my main camera, a Nikon D3S. I set them both on transceive (TxRx mode), Channel 1 and fired away as Paul hit the jump, getting shots from both angles at the same time.

I put the second camera behind a wooden Teva sign under the jump to keep it inconspicuous for the video crew. To be sure there was no interference from the sign or anything else around the camera, I put the Plus III on the ground with the antenna pointed on a line of sight to my shooting position, connected to the camera with a standard Nikon/PocketWizard cord about 18 inches long.

There were some tense moments and a few crashes, including one hard impact the first day which gave Paul a minor concussion. We thought it was over at that point, but Paul came back the next day with renewed energy. After a few practice jumps and one minor crash, he nailed a massive double back flip, landing perfectly and riding away on a partially broken frame. It was an incredible shoot, and an inspiring moment to witness another big step forward in the never-ending progression in the sport of mountain biking.

– Scott

I have a yo-yo and let me tell you i can do some amazing things with it. roll the string drop it and it comes back. Thais right amazing. This guy has nothing on me. Look at his silly skills.

Okay well fine maybe I made a small understatement of his skills. Canadian national Champion Jensen Kimmitt wins the 2010 World YoYo Contest with his new signature yo-yo the NORTHSTAR by YoYoFactory.

Next video is even better, this dude is absolutely nuts and I tip my hat off to him. Mike Wilson killing it on the Truckee River doing 60 foot double and triple back flips. I would love to try this, maybe not from 60ft but somewhere lower just to see what it’s all about.

Maybe next year at the cottage we set something up like this.

The XGames was born as a medium for atheletes who’s sports could not be quantified by the judging matrix of the Olympics to showcase their awsomeness. Guys on pointy skateboards and BMX bikes with “pegs” have turned into a multi-billion dollar industry of alteranative and agreesive sports, complete with training teams, huge corporate sponsors, TV contracts, penalties, cheating, gossip and advertisers.

So Rad.

On Friday night, as you know from reading the quick blurb and watching the awesome video, Levi LaVallee attempted (and walked away from) a double backflip on a snowmobile, somtheing never before attemted in compettition, any where, ever, ever. A DOUBLE F@#$ING BACKFLIP. I watched, with a bunch of people casually drinking around a bar in Boston, and the place went nuts, the first rotation was a little slow, leaving room for him to stall out completely and land directly on his head, but LaVallee pumped the accelerator (which gives the sled extra momentum), slung his weight back, and completed 720 degrees of vertical axis rotation. It was rad.

So he lands a little long, bounces of his sled, his girlfriend and the medical staff start sprinting towards him. In an instant, LaVallee pops up and starts pumping his fist and sprinting up the landing slope (he broke his ankle by the way…). The crowd, atheletes, snow bunnies and random dudes looking to get laid alike all start going crazy. I mean, the mere fact that the guy was able to walk is cool enough for my city-ass. So he gets to the top of the slope and he’s greeted by Suzy Something Or Other who’s very first statement/question to a man who had just blown the X Community away is “You know that didn’t count, right?”

DIDN’T COUNT? How is that possibible. I and millions of others watching at bars, on couches and standing outside in the faintly falling snow all saw it! It’s like telling me boobs with silicon in them aren’t real… I CAN TOUCH THEM CAN’T I???

We all witnessed history. Right in front of our very eyes, the XGames went from alternative to mainstream. Levi LaVallee had done something so cool that it was outside the bounds of what the XGames is capable of judging. It wasn’t like he tweaked an old trick… he went out into the woods with RedBull and a bunch of money, and did something that had never before been attempted… and the first thing his sport asks him is: You know that didn’t count, right?”

Unbelieveable.

So here it is, in it’s entirety. The full coverage of the event (you may have seen the short version yesterday) including the dumbass commentators not being able to realize the awesomenss of what had just been done because all that mattered to them was that it didn’t count according to the rules.

Levi LaVallee doesn’t need a gold metal. He is too cool for it.

We heard on the radio this week that the snow has arrived early in the southern Alps and there is the possibility of some resorts opening before the end of the month. Please verify directly with the resorts to confirm there is skiing at your intended destination.

To whet your appetite we have put a series of videos together – these guys – Dusty Diller and Jamie Pierre – are not only awesome skiers they also have incredible courage.

Diller shows what he is capable of at Winter Park, Colorado, successfully completing, 360. 720, 1080 and 1440 degree revolutions, a drop over a cliff face and a double back flip – thanks for the great video from bbloss.

And below we have Jamie Pierre who refers to himself as a stunt man or loose canon on skis and talks of two golden rules when cliff jumping. First is to check out the landing site and second is to stand a way back from the cliff edge so as not to psyche yourself out before you launch. Thanks jcrenom6 for this video.

Finally take a look at Pierre launching himself over a 72metre, 245 feet, drop – wow breathtaking. He wears protective clothing in the form of padded shorts and a back protector but for some crazy reason no helmet – OMG. Pierre tells us he wanted ‘to hold the world record for just one day and that now he can retire’. Yes we can see why. Thanks fm3pk8 for the video.

The saying goes: “Safety First!” and that may be true for everybody but a few athletes competing in

The saying goes: “Safety First!” and that may be true for everybody but a few athletes competing in action sports. In the rapidly evolving world of “huck for bucks”, big air jumps on skateboards and BMX bikes the risk is rising everyday. Coming down off ye’ good old news wire I just saw a story about FMX rider Scott Murray who has landed the double back flip. The scary thing is he has now been added to the X games because of this.

One trick and one shot at glory is what the double back means to him. Not sure if anybody out there remembers Chuck Carothers body roll/varial from a few years ago? That one trick got Chuck an invite to the X games and when he stuck it he was a made man …sort of.

Watch Scott Murray land the Double Back flip

Let’s run down the top three reasons why Scott Murray should reconsider showing up at the X Games to try the double back flip.

1. Donde Esta Chuck?: Outside of the body roll …Carothers hasn’t really accomplished much. Not a knock to him, he’s a capable rider, but he hasn’t stepped up to that Pastrana/ Adams level.

Watch Chuck Carothers throw the Carolla

2. Anybody Remember Baltimore?: Two words … Stephen Murray. I am not railing against progression but even to the most competent athletes accidents happen. Stephen’s signature move was the double back flip on a BMX bike and he stuck that trick thousands of times. His accident was a fluke but proof that nobody is safe. Factor in this is a motocross bike that outweighs the BMX bike by several hundred pounds the risk increases. Factor in that Scott Murray probably doesn’t have this trick dialed in 100% and the risk is off the charts. You can practice all you want but accidents happen.

Donations to the Stephen Murray Family Fund Can be made here.

3. When It’s Go Time, It’s go Time: There is no backing out of that trick. Once you commit you are in it for good or bad. I heard something about riding vert on a BMX bike from X games gold medalist Chad Kagy I think that rings true of any action sport. Chad said “It’s not a matter of if you get knocked out but when you will get knocked out.”

I usually don’t draw on too many personal anecdotes but I was there when Travis stomped his double back. Standing at the landing it was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. No matter what is said about his decision to do it because of rock-paper-scissors Travis wouldn’t have gone for it if he didn’t have it dialed in. The air in the staples center was electric that night and that kicked off an evening of progression where a few athletes rose to the occasion and stepped up there game in ways never before seen. The question now remains for Scott Murray, what is the glory worth? One door has several thousand dollars and maybe some endorsements. Door number two has the lights out and maybe a wheel chair.

The ultimate irony as I write this is I believe tryuy int he saying “Trust your guy, take chances.” Scott Murray may be the one who proves that point or will have me eating ym own words. Scott, if you go for it, land ‘wheels down” that’s my adivce. Thankfully, with skateboarding, I don’t have to make these decisions.
