A rather full on interesting event will take in London tonight. I received the info via email but unfortunately  there is no flyer but who cares for a flyer when the party contains 3 stages full of electronic music. A psy trance stage , a minimal techno one and a chill lounge with live bands playing Reaggae dubs, MPB… & Djs playing ambient, Down Tempo music…. will probably attempt to satisfy everybody who will join the party. The people who  are organizing the event are celebrating all of those birthdays bellow

So another beautiful morning got disrupted by no less than two trucks, delivering some nice wax to the office. Two new releases showed up, featuring 4 great bands. If you’ve been down with Vendetta for some time, most bands should be like old friends to you (if not, make room for some new acquaintances, you will NOT regret it). I have a feeling that split releases will soon be the new black.

First off, the OMEGA MASSIF / MOUNT LOGAN split LP.

OMEGA MASSIF stills moves within their comfort zone. They deliver 2 slow down tempo doom songs, both over 10 minutes long. If you like this kind of music, this band is one of the best in the business.

MOUNT LOGAN mixes it up and keeps it interesting with a new style. A bit more experimental this time around (for example added vocals), which is refreshing, to say the least. Instead of just doing a natural follow up to their old LP on VENDETTA, they find a new approach. It is something in the vein of earlier DON CABALLERO mixed with some SHELLAC. But without moving to far away from their “original” style. I’m sure a lot of metalheads will be disappointed, but who cares about narrowminded traditionalists? Without new approaches and influences I’m sure ‘metal’ would’ve never seen the light of day. So if you are conservative, maybe you should stick your head in the sand while I say that this is one of the most interesting releases that has come out of the doomscene in a looong time.

These two acts from Germany knows what they are doing, and you should of course check them out.

THOU / SALOME

These two bands from the US of A can’t have gone by unnoticed. They are brutal, heavy and could basically rip anyone a new a-hole. THOU has some great releases under their belt and they seem to put a lot of emphasis on pure and heavy brutality. This is really what this kind of music is all about. They don’t really bring anything new to the table, but that is not a bad thing in this case.

SALOME on the other hand seems to be all about repetetive snakes of guitar riffs, while walls of drums are being built up while totally insane (female) vocals are falling down upon thee like acid rain. This one is a equation that will blow your head.

Hey y’all! I just got back from an AMAZING concert, Jedi Electro. Remember them? And I vow, I VOW TO SEE EVERY SINGLE LIVE SHOW OF THEIRS IN MONTRÉAL. I don’t care. They are without a doubt, the top 10 shows of this entire year for me…maybe ever!

Ahem. I am FIVE hours away from heading out to New York. I hate that I have no time to make more complete updates but I figure, two minutes in heaven, is better than one minute in heaven. So, one sentence reviews and thoughts are all the time I have right now. BECAUSE I’M GOING TO NEW YORK! Woohoo!

Why am I going, you might ask? Well, I am going to first and foremost see Kylie Minogue at the Hammerstein Ballroom on Sunday. JA JA JA yes laugh all you want, but she is amazing. I adore her. And it will be INCREDIBL(Y SEXY). I am also going for the CMJ Marathon…hopefully I can find a cheaper way in. Mwwwwaaajajjjaa1

So, quick update on POP MTL. Great festival. The third day I went to see the Slew (Kid Koala + Wolfmother). Great combo, but the bass for Wolfmother tooooooooooooootally faded out the turntable skillz but regardless, Wolfmother kicks total ass! They toured for the one and only time but worry not! You can check out their album for FREE here! After that, I checked out the Japandroids. A band whose album I’ve had for so long but still have not listened to because of the hype. Were they good live?! Yes, they totally rocked it. Such great energy for a two person band. There was crowd surfing, moshing, arm flailing and nails flying. But, I didn’t dig it despite this. I STILL wouldn’t listen to the album. Maybe it was because I was gettin’ puuuurdy tired.

The last day, I was at Divan Orange allll night. I still hold the opinion that if you were a band, this is DEFINITELY a venue you want to play at. Great atmosphere. Great sound. Average priced beer…and a mix crowd ranging from super artsy pretentious folk to super smelly non showering people, oh, and hippies. Sometimes. I saw DVAS, Silly Kissers, and Cadence Weapon. I wanted to see CFCF but I was falling asleep! DVAS played this amazing retro club pop music. I felt like it was italo-disco of twenty years ago. CRAZY GOOD dance party. And Silly Kissers KICK SO MUCH ASS!!

Anyways, I’ve been meaning to do these reviews for MONTHS. I’m not kidding. And it’s just getting a bit silly now, don’t you think? I figure I might as well share the music, and if you like it, go and buy it! And go to the shows! And yada yada yada you know how this works. =)

Basement Jaxx – Scars (2009)

Gave this album so many listens it hurts. To be honest, Basement Jaxx will just never get back to the “Romeo” and “Good Luck” days. Still a great club and dance album. Sometimes housey. And the cameos on this album are pretty impressive and are tooooooootally worth it in the end, unlike other cameo showoff albums. Not their best, but these two songs below and a few others…make Scars pretty alright. That’ll do BJ, that’ll do.

1983 est le premier album de l’excellent “Beatmaker” américain Steven Ellison, plus connu sous le pseudonyme “Flying Lotus”. C’est la tête d’affiche du Hip Hop alternatif californien (Nosaj Thing, Dabrye, Deadelus etc…). Lorsque je suis tombé sur le beat ravageur du neveu d’Alice Coltrane, je me suis surpris en train de hocher la tête tout seul dans ma piaule comme un débile. Le pire c’est que c’était tellement bon, donc j’ai continué jusqu’à ce que l’album se termine et me laisse un vague sentiment de nostalgie et de bonheur. Si vous avez un minimum de coeur (par exemple : si vous trouvez que “Miskine le poussin” c’est marrant, mais à la fois vous vous sentez mal pour le poussin) vous comprendrez ce que j’entends par là! C’est le minimum de la part d’un membre d’une famille de génies musicaux, que de nous faire partager des réussites comme celle la. Bonne écoute et régalez vous.

Moby is probably one of the most underrated electronic artists nowadays…after having released three albums in the past four years and yes, hitting the top a few times in European electronic dance charts with a slew of singles unheard by most others, Moby is still just “that guy that did ‘Southside’ with Gwen!”. I think in the mainstream, he is best known for this song. And no lie, “Southside” is one of the greatest songs of the decade for sure! But c’mon! This is Moby. Moby, who quit punk in early 90’s, joined electronica, quit techno in 1992 (as he so famously told Eminem), became a great veteran of music more than twenty years later from when he started, and truly was one of the artists of the past decade who exposed electronic/music as an art form and it’s relevance to music history, to jazz, to film, and to activism.

I must admit, I stopped following Moby after Play, an album that produced probably his most well known hits “Natural Blues”, my personal favorite and defs my tops of the decade, “Porcelain”, and “Southside”. Sure I have all the albums since then but only have listened to them halfheartedly and gave my attention moreso to the singles released like “We Are All Stars”–written for 9/11, and ‘Lift Me Up”. What happened? I dunno. Moby is so chill. So perfect for so many occasions but I guess in the last four/five years I’ve become more pre-occupied with artists and genres of the like and discovered them to be a bit more fitting to the time and to my taste.

Moby recently had a show here in MTL just yesterday. But stupid me, I missed it because I have let go of my agenda which is futile because my memory for shows–especially here in MTL where there are too many bands to see in not enough lives—is become more and more frail. Boo. En tout cas, the good thing is, Moby played a FREE SHOW the next day AKA today at the Apple Store. Though I hate for a show to be played at the Apple Store, since it is like playing at, like Starbucks, or Wal-Mart, I pass judgement on the fact that  Play, was the first album in history that had all of it’s singles licensed in commercials, films, and advertisements. The reasoning behind these deals? Well maybe the money, but somewhere along the way Moby needed to get his stalemate status out of the gutter and like most things, sadly, commercializing it was the best way. And I guess, playing for free at the Apple store was one of the only ways to get himself out of this lull pit once again. You gotta do what you gotta do.

Let me just say though, Apple Store is quite an amazing venue, despite what one may think. From the outside, I heard NOTHING. Good insulation.  From the inside, the sound is CRYSTAL sharp. SO SHARP. It is aesthetically so clean. So clean. The only show I’ve been to that’s was actually lit was Dan Deacon back at the Bumbershoot last year when the electrocurrents got all messed up. Dancing in the light is just as fun as dancing in the dark. What made this Apple Store even better than most venues is that it is very well ventilated. I could dance for HOURS and not break a sweat in there. I wonder if they have shows there all the time!? So cozy and nice. Damn. I am a conformer jajaja.

A caveat, first. I ended up finding out about this nearly half past when it started. I booked my way there and only caught the last fifteen or so minutes. It was BARELY advertised from what I could tell since a FREE Moby show, even on such a gloomy, rainy, and drab day as it was today, one would think at least a hundred would show up, but this was not the case. I would estimate under 50 people were there. I will also guess a lot of them did not know who he was or knew but weren’t huge fans. This became apparent to me when he played his encore, “Natural Blues”, and NO ONE sang along. But who cares?! I hope the people walked out happy and myspaced him right away to fulfill the point of it all.

So, this isn’t technically live coverage as I saw no more than 15 minutes (boo) and so this post isn’t as detailed as most of my live coverage. Desolée.

I wrote this mainly because I wanted to share my video that I recorded of “Natural Blues”. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Ugh I wish I was there for the whole set! Does anyone know the singer here?! She is incredible. There were moments during songs where her gospel voice was all you could hear, as if the prowess of her voice shunned all the other sound away into silence. LOOK AT ME! LISTEN TO ME! Her voice demands the attention. It is wonderful. It is ethereal. And this video of “Natural Blues” doesn’t even cover the half of it! UGH I need to know who she is and I couldn’t hear her name when Moby announced it. So, if anyone knows…please please please tell me! Much appreciated. =)

I also wrote this to remind people that Moby is out there! And like the milk carton from Blur’s “Coffee and TV”, the little cartoon Moby is back there, in your subconscience, conscience, somewhere! Look for it! and get Mobied up once again.

Yes, that’s right, the UK two-piece, Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker a.k.a. Zero 7 have a new album due out on September 27th, so start the countdown!

The new album, Yeah Ghost, is a slight change from the usual cool down tempo rhythms, typical of the duos older days when they teamed up with Sia to release the legedary Destiny. Still relaxed, dreamy and overall soothering, the new tracks feature a slightly more upbeat tone and still lovable as always.

A Silver Mt. Zion, fondé par des membres du sublime Godspeed You! Black Emperor, est tout à fait impossible à décrire. Il s’inscrit dans le sillon de son groupe-mère tout en explorant d’autres dimensions musicales. Ces génies du label canadien Constellation Records (qui réunit en son sein une myriade de groupes plus géniaux les uns que les autres), nous proposent un album à l’intensité wagnerienne, autoqualifié avec pertinence de “Jewish Experiment”. A écouter encore et encore (et encore).

Ô Emphase!

Cet album est une promenade. Tombé de chez Ninja Tune, Days To Come nous prend par la main pour nous administrer sa douceur. Rien de très révolutionnaire au fond, juste une delicatesse et une sensibilité qui procurent un réel plaisir.
