Sherlock Holmes, released on Christmas, is a new and refreshing take on the legendary super sleuth b

Sherlock Holmes, released on Christmas, is a new and refreshing take on the legendary super sleuth by director Guy Ritchie. It stars Robert Downey Jr. in the titular role with Jude Law as his loyal, straight-man sidekick, Dr. Watson.

The story begins with Holmes in a footrace against time to arrive on a crime scene before any lives are taken. He and Watson surgically dismantle the bad guys and subdue the film’s lead villain, Lord Blackwood, all before the “proper” authorities arrive. Back at 221B Baker Street, the relationship between Holmes and Watson is examined as it is announced that Watson will be moving out of his shared home with Holmes and into a new residence with his future fiance. Before they can settle their growing dispute over these new living arrangements and its effects on their relationship, news from the authorities reaches them that Lord Blackwood has risen from the grave. With a new case to solve, Holmes and Watson set out on a sometimes slow moving, but overall fast-paced mission to stop the potentially undead Blackwood from achieving his evil plot.

In typical Guy Ritchie fashion, the visuals are very good, the soundtrack is excellent (another excellent score from Hans Zimmer), the tone is impeccable, and the fighting is top notch. The directing is very tight without taking anything away from the acting prowess of Downey Jr. and Law. The cinematography is nothing to rave about but it doesn’t take away from the movie at all.

I’m a major stickler for character development and Sherlock Holmes definitely delivers in that department. Their are no stones left unturned in the relationship between the odd and quirky Holmes and the very meticulous Watson. Ritchie spares no opportunity to show audiences how well Watson knows Holmes (he doesn’t miss a beat when he walks in on a seemingly suicidally hanged Holmes) and vice versa. On top of their friendship, the extra dynamic of a fleeing Watson is added into the mix. The strained relationship between the two partners is addressed when appropriate. It is clear that Holmes is distraught over the fact that his sidekick is moving out and it is clear that Watson knows that, and may even feel the same, yet they try not to show it. Holmes even goes so far as to playfully, yet perhaps seriously, break up the relationship between Watson and his girlfriend. The writers have done an excellent job at adding multiple layers to a relationship that as arguably as important as the plot.

For awhile, during the screening of the film, I became worried that they had incorporated something too supernatural into the plot. It felt like they were trying to make “the one case Sherlock Holmes couldn’t solve.” The situation is resolved quite nicely, albeit rather quickly. Any more discussion of this part of the plot might spoil the film.

I was a bit concerned at the casting of Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes as I did not believe his British accent was sufficient enough. As I expected, Jude Law was tremendous, but contrary to my original predictions, Downey Jr. was an excellent Holmes. Mark Strong played an excellent villain in Lord Blackwood and all of the supporting cast was excellent. However, Rachel McAdams didn’t live up to expectations. I’m a huge fan of McAdams, but she never felt right to me. Her character, a traveling con artist with a deep romantic past linked to Holmes, seemed a bit to edgy for McAdams. She came off as too nice and too weak in my opinion.

One aspect of the film that I both enjoyed and found to be a bit of a negative was Holmes’ deductive reasoning skills. All of the slow motion shots from the trailers were employed as Holmes’ inner monologue, discussing to himself how to take out an enemy by the use of deductive reasoning. This, I felt, was brilliantly done. It’s almost beyond my explanation. On the opposite side, the major pieces of the main crime that had played out through the course of the film were all described in short detail in an expositional monologue at the end of the film in a sort of “wait, how did he pull that off” type of situation. Throughout the film, Ritchie makes sure to point out and highlight major components of the crime and he makes sure to highlight the fact that Holmes notices them, but it all hits you at the end like a ton of bricks. The way these clues are highlighted through the film is quite genius, but the way it’s all presented at the end feels kind of cheap to me.

The film comes across as very Sherlock Holmesy, which is good, but the plot sort of lags at the beginning. McAdams somewhat weak performance along with a couple expositional problems drops my score down a bit. Sherlock Holmes gets an 8.2/10

LOS ANGELES (Dec. 22) – Home sales increased 4.7 percent in November in California compared with the same period a year ago, while the median price of an existing home rose 5.8 percent, the CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (C.A.R.) reported today.

“First-time buyers continued to drive the market in November, as many opened escrow to take advantage of the federal tax credit prior to its original Nov. 30 expiration,” said C.A.R. President Steve Goddard. “The extension and expansion of the tax credit until April 30, 2010, along with low interest rates, should continue to positively impact the market in coming months.
Paramount released the trailer for what could be next year’s biggest movie. Iron Man 2, starring a star-studded ensemble cast including Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Scarlet Johansson, Samuel Jackson, and Sam Rockwell, and directed by Jon Favreau, will either be another sophomore flop for Marvel or evidence that the studio is taking its IPs more seriously.

The trailer presents Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, in front of Congress denying the government the rights to the weapon and declaring, “I have successfully privatized world peace.” Mickey Rourke gets extensive coverage in scenes hinting at what looks like a revenge story for his character, Whiplash, who looks like he has a score to settle with the Stark name. Stark will have to deal with the side effects of the arc reactor embedded in his chest — one shot shows him looking concerned at the glowing blue veins in his abdomen.

You’ll also see Johansson in action as the Black Widow, a cameo of Rockwell as Stark’s rival, Justin Hammer, and a cool shot of Iron Man and his new partner War Machine firing on what could either be robots or men in Iron Man-inspired suits. The trailer is brilliant. Without giving away too much and simultaneously alluding to much more, it looks like next year’s Dark Knight.

Sinopsis:

Insurance Company Bad Faith in Settling Pedestrian, Bicycle, Car and Motorcycle Accidental Injury an

Insurance Company Bad Faith in Settling Pedestrian, Bicycle, Car and Motorcycle Accidental Injury and Wrongful Death Accidents Explained By An Experienced Personal Injury Attorney for Downey

As a Pedestrian, Car, Truck, Bicycle & Motorcycle Injury & Wrongful Death Accident Attorney for Downey, one has to ask just how much profit insurance companies need to make to be satisfied. The answer, when one examines the bad faith some are exhibiting today in settling personal injury accident and wrongful death claims, it appears that there is no limit to their greed.

When you get into an accident today, whether it’s your fault or someone else’s, either you or the persons you injure as a pedestrian, on a bicycle, in a car or on a motorcycle are more than likely going to be forced to deal with an insurance company that is determined to offer as little money as possible to settle any injury claims.

If you are the person who has been injured in the bicycle, pedestrian, car or motorcycle accident or if you’ve lost a loved one, the worst thing you can do today is to try to settle your claim with the insurance company yourself. While insurance companies consider lawyers to be annoyances, they consider you to be a nuisance and will usually offer you only what they consider to be a “nuisance value settlement.” Once they have the mind set that your case can be settled for such a paltry amount, an attorney’s involvement will not change matters.

Your insurance company will be offering you or the other driver only a portion of the medical bills and a small amount for pain and suffering. If you or they have an attorney, the attorney will have to prevail on the medical providers to slash their medical bills by 1/3 to one half in order to have sufficient money left over for any attorney fees for their time and effort and the frustration of dealing with an insurance company today and to put any money into your pocket or the pocket of the persons injured in the accident.

If you’ve been seriously injured in an accident, call the Law Offices of R. Sebastian Gibson at (800) 589-3202 or e-mail us at our website, www.SebastianGibsonLaw.com If we are contacted early on in a case, we can prepare your case as if we are going to trial. Even though trials today are rare, unfortunately, it is only by preparing your case in such a manner, that an attorney today can obtain the type of settlement you deserve.

As badly as insurance companies treat the people they insure, they treat others even worse. Why should you care about the person you’ve injured? First, it’s the right thing to be concerned about someone you hurt. Second, you shouldn’t be causing them to be frustrated again when they have to deal with your insurance company. And third, when your insurance company tries to stiff them by paying them less than the amount of their medical bills and a reasonable amount for pain and suffering, much less any attorneys’ fees so they can have an attorney deal with your insurance company, they risk making the injured party sue you in order to obtain what is fair and reasonable.

As a result of the determination by liability insurance companies to make as much money as they can for their shareholders and executives, the person or persons who have been injured in the accident, whether those persons are the individuals in your vehicle or the other persons hurt by your vehicle, they will, without an experienced attorney, be forced to accept a paltry amount. Their doctor bills or your doctor bills will have to be slashed (of if there is medical insurance, the right of the medical insurance company to reimbursement will have to be significantly reduced) and your lawyer may have to reduce his or her fees as well or face the expensive alternative of filing suit.

The cause of this entire process is nothing short of bad faith by certain liability insurers who claim on television to be your best friend and who, when you need them most, or when the person you hit needs them most, turn into greedy monsters who refuse to pay more than a paltry amount and who risk having you sued by any person that you injure.

We’ve been handling personal injury cases for over 30 years and the climate in dealing with insurance companies has never been worse. While we’ve settled cases exceeding one million dollars on a number of occasions, it’s the smaller soft tissue cases where a person has significant pain but doesn’t fracture a bone or require surgery that an extremely experienced attorney can be needed even more to obtain a good settlement. Having previously represented insurance companies, we know how to deal with these companies and have been very successful in obtaining millions and millions of dollars for our clients over the years.

If you want to obtain what you’re entitled to for your claim, call the Law Offices of R. Sebastian Gibson today at (800) 589-3202 or e-mail us at our web site, www.SebastianGibsonLaw.com

The moment journalist Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr) catches sight of homeless Nathaniel Anthony Ayers (Jamie Foxx) playing violin on the street of LA, he knows that he is a story, in a world where no one longer finds stories different enough to read.

But Nathaniel’s story is a story with a lots of full stops. As Lopez said, Nathaniel is shy in our first encounter. It takes more than sessions of questions and answers to know about Nathaniel, his cello and Beethoven, his dreams, and the shouting match ongoing in his mind: a story so perfect that it will make you doubt your own conscience when you read it.

Nathaniel is gifted and he only has one dream. The dream stays the same even when fate decides he should end up on the street with a two-stringed violin instead of in a concert hall.

One day I asked him about his hopes and dreams. That’s easy, he said. I’d like to get these other two strings.

Blame his schizophrenic mind. Maybe blame the unforgiving fate. Life isn’t fair, is it? His mother once said: You know what I hear when you play your music. I hear the voice of God coming.. You got something special here, baby. A way out. There is a whole world waiting for you. But, unfortunately, everything ends up not just as it should be.

The Soloist illustrates how Lopez rides the roller coaster of not only interacting , but also developing a relationship with Nathaniel. Not seldom he has to deal with his own frustration of being unable to comprehend Nathaniel and his actions.

Look for a different movie if you’re looking for one with a happy ending, or maybe at least a logical explanation. Perhaps, as what I feel when I watch The Soloist, you can not stop telling yourself: Come on, can’t at least life starts being fair to him? But maybe it does. Nathaniel is anyway a simple man. Remember, he once only dreams of having a complete set of strings for his violin.

I tell him that this is no place for him. He says he wants to be here. He says it’s his choice. Should I take him on his word or should I force him inside? Wouldn’t a little arm twisting be more humane than leaving him here, on the streets, in this lost colony of broken helpless souls?

For Lopez, everything finally becomes as clear as a day when he accepts who Nathaniel truly is. Well, who is he anyway, to hold the power of deciding what’s best for Nathaniel’s happiness? Maybe Nathaniel does regard Lopez as his God. But is he?

Some said that it’s totally a wrong decision of choosing Lopez as the main character in this movie. Some said the story would go better if only Nathaniel is the protagonist. But for me, it is through him that we can fully feel the complex character of Nathaniel. It is through his reactions and endless monolog along the movie that we see who Nathaniel Anthony Ayers is.

The Soloist is moving. It’s uplifting. And truly a showcase of talents from Downey, and especially Jamie Foxx. ♣♣♣♣♣ for Joe Wright and the actual Steve Lopez, without whom this story would fail to enrich our soul.

For many people change is a curse word. The fear it. Run from it. Hide from it. I embrace it. It is

For many people change is a curse word.

The fear it.

Run from it.

Hide from it.

I embrace it. It is a reality and inevitability of life as well as growth. However, just because I like change does not mean its always easy. Specifically those large transitions in your life that change everything.

Today is a rough day because the realities of the current transition and coming change have befallen me. Where as my wife will struggle and mourn the changes once they have happened I struggle and mourn long before the changes actually occur.

I love the church we are leaving. I love the people, the leadership, and the vision. Over the past three years (specifically the last year and a half) we have shared intense brokenness and healing together. We have shared frustrations, joys, heartache, and much ridiculousness. It’s hard to just walk away from that, even if it is following the call of God on your life.

As I finish up at Revolution, doing my best with the ministries I am involved with and helping in the transition of new people, I also am looking ahead to New Orleans. I never knew how overwhelming it could be to be in the middle of the two worlds. On the one hand you have the realities of New Orleans. Obvious facts like, the city is different since we left, most of our friends are gone, we have no place to live or jobs to make money, and then we have the exciting but complicated and time consuming process of beginning a community center and possibly a church launching out of that community center.

Couple that with the realities here in Southern California, namely, not being around family and friends as often, walking away from a ministry that you know God has used you in ways you didn’t even think possible, finishing strong, and the odd sensation of helping plan for a future that you will not be apart of.

It is all of these things that for some reason have all come crashing down on me today. It will all be fine, I know that in my head and heart, but today I mourn the transition because I need to. I need to wrestle with the pain, fear, doubt, and loss that accompanies change. If I don’t how can I move forward with the excitement and passion that is lurking deep within?

So I guess I leave you with this, transitions and change are not the end of the world…

but today, for me, it kind of feels that way.

Until next time…

Marketing is a relative phenomenon, depending on who you patronize or manage can mean all the difference in the world. Case in point, see the flyer LionStarr scraped together for the Friday September 18th show in Downey (above). This show is being put on by Big D Entertainment (much love) and they pitch the night a little something like this:

Course the clarification is really only provided on their other flyer, which you can peep after the jump. Regardless of flyer, the show is 10 bucks and you can cop them right here at the Zebreezy. E-mail us or call 310.228.0592.

James Downey is an experienced Lighting director from Toronto. He has worked on numerous projects in the Toronto scene, with some of the more recent being ET Canada’s new Studio, the 2008 Gemini’s and Genies, and the most recent “The Score” studio install. This article comes from Chris Alexander at Rosco, with many thanks!

Chris Alexander – 2009 – Rosco Newsletter

I went to an SMPTE conference in my final year at Conestoga College and met Adrian Goldberg who was giving a lighting demonstration. I got his card and hounded him until he put me in touch with a company called Electric Images. My first job was with them as head of their lighting department even though I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. I worked with a bunch of different lighting directors; Tom Swartz, Adrian Goldberg, Frank Merino and Ken Sala as their lighting assists.

My first big colour lighting show was a kids’ program with Tom Swartz. I remember he would send us up between the shows to change the gels and gobos to get different looks with the same lighting. This was all before moving lights. When Electric Images went out of business I started doing individual projects, a day here a day there, and it slowly blossomed. Then suddenly I got my own show and it went from there.

I always carry my “Rosco Kit”, as I call it. I have over 800 Rosco Gobos and at least 500 sheets of Rosco gel colours. I have a package truck as well with two rolls of pretty much everything from colour correction, diffusions, and reflectors to ND’s. I’m definitely a heavy Rosco user. I own about 12 Rosco Gobo Rotators and use them regularly as well as the Image Pro projectors.

I find having my “Rosco Kit” with me helps when deciding the colour scheme for shows. I do a Franklin Templeton show for Business News Network and have three Franklin Templeton people sitting with me going through combinations of colour for their Fund Group. Having the kit with all the colours right there in large pieces makes it easier to decide with them which ones work best.

I use gobos a lot in my lighting, but rarely in focus unless it’s a logo. For Franklin Templeton I use three different gobos to light the sign with his head on it. This combination of a different gobo for three lights on one sign gives me a great breakup of light and effect. I use gobos as my paints! I heard there’s going to be a new iPhone app that will have the Rosco Gobo catalogue on it which is great; I can carry it around and do quick searches for the type of gobo I’m looking for. In my kit I usually carry a minimum of 8 copies of each gobo and as many as 20 of the standard/popular ones. Gobos are definitely a palatte I like to work with.

In 2002-2003 I designed the world exclusive Lord of the Rings exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum, which broke attendance records at the ROM. We used over a dozen Rosco double gobo rotators in the forest set along with Rosco’s Delta 3000 smoke machines to recreate the Fangorn forest scene. In another recreation of the dead marshes set, we used eight Rosco Image Pro’s with custom made water gobos to help set the mood. In all we used over 140 Rosco gobos, 20 Rosco double gobo rotators, 12 Rosco Image Pros, and three Delta 3000 smoke machines.

I did The Score studio installation in 2008 from the ground up. It was my first opportunity to specify RoscoView for windows. We had windows approximately 50 feet wide by 12 feet high to cover. I wasn’t aware of RoscoView when we first started the project and I was at odds as to what to do with these windows. They were in a concave arrangement and I didn’t want to deal with rollers in that situation. It was a “eureka” moment when I heard about RoscoView. We did a test with The Scores’ Creative Director Sam Nasrawi and it did everything it was supposed to do. Sam gave the go ahead. We had a learning curve with the installation, but now it’s in and everything is working well. They love it.

In 2008 I was also doing the installations for Global Studios’ new newsrooms and the new Global National set, as well. Each of those would be outfitted with a full Rosco Kit of diffusions, ND’s, Cinefoil and anything else I felt they needed.

I have been a Rosco user from day one. I like the fact that I can have a Rosco rep come out and show me things when it’s convenient for me. That Rosco has a face to go with the name is important. I was shown the “wet test” between Rosco 3026 Tough White Diffusion and LEE 216 which shows that when exposed to water the LEE 216 diffusion became translucent, the Tough White didn’t. I work outdoors a lot and maintaining the integrity of your diffusion in all kinds of weather, particularly with large sources, is important.

I own much of my own gear but deal with Angelo Colussi at P.S. Production Services for generators and any extra film gear I need, David James at PRG for extra rock n’ roll moving head gear and also Louise Nardella at the Source Shop for a variety of things. What they bring to the table is “my emergency is their emergency”, which is great! I remember one time my light meter battery died and Louise jumped in a cab and brought me a replacement battery because I was in such a panic. It’s customer service like that I give to my clients. I don’t expect it, but I sure do appreciate it when I get it.

The $87 million school will serve over 2,000 students and be constructed on a 15-acre plot in south LA. The project is on a fast track, with ground to be broken in August and planned project duration of 2 years. The awarding of the contract should bring much needed employment for Downey general contractors and other local tradesmen.

High School No. 3 will be constructed around a central courtyard. It will have 75 classrooms and will feature a media center, gymnasium, and performing arts building. There is an accompanying 187-space parking structure planned, with basketball courts on the second level of the structure.

Several subcontracting trades are yet unidentified for this large project, so it is suggested that all interested parties, from Los Angeles painters to Pasadena plumbers, contact Clark Construction Group.

Long Beach Water Department proposed an amendment to the use of underground and recycled water, which would make the district less reliant on water from the Metropolitan Water District. However, the cities of Signal Hill, Downey, and Cerritos disagreed with the amendments, so a formal hearing is scheduled for late August.

The 17% proposed increase in water rates comes on the heels of last years 15.5% increase. Although water use has dropped 15.5% over the past ten years, Metropolitan Water District raised its rates 22% this year, and it supplies half of the water used by Long Beach Water Department.

There is a good chance the proposed increase will go through because the alternatives are expensive and take years to take effect. Long Beach encourages its customers to conserve water to help alleviate the reliance on MWD’s water supply. Long term solutions are desalination and reuse of recycled groundwater through the use of aquifers.
