Played to fuck for years for good reason. A pure snapshot of the gestation of UK Hiphop at the time, embracing more synthetic sounds vs straight up sampling of the US culture. Sure, its a huge mainstream hit and who’s surprised with a voice like Neneh’s. Production is nailed by Bomb The Bass’ Tim Simenon and much like most of Simenon’s productions, has a riff you’ll remember until the day you die. This extended mix has the supreme ending with only the chorus, synth strings and breaks. Superb.

From Discogs
In 1988, Cherry recorded the international hit single “Buffalo Stance” Her debut Raw Like Sushi”s eclectic blend of hip-hop rhythms and pop melodies earned Cherry excellent reviews and sizeable sales figures. In 1990, Cherry contributed to the AIDS-charity collection, Red Hot And Blue, singing Cole Porter’s “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”, but was quiet again until the release of Homebrew in 1992. Cherry reasserted herself as a commercial force in 1994 with the international hit single “Seven Seconds”, which saw her collaborating with Senegalese superstar Youssou N’Dour.

Gare du Nord is a Dutch/Belgian lounge-duo formed by Doc (Ferdy Lancee) and Inca (Barend Fransen). Ferdy Lancee and the Belgian saxofonist Barend Fransen started their cooperation in 2001, as a result of a soundtrack for one-off lounge in Belgium. Music comes in the hands of the large independent label Play It Again Sam in Brussels which results in the album Excellounge (2001) and Kind of Cool (2002). Some tracks can be found on the soundtrack of the series Six Feet Under and the horrorfilm Ghost Rider (2006). In 2003, Gare du Nord continued with nine men touring the Netherlands and Russia. In their own Cell4-Studio in the Netherlands the third album Club Gare du Nord (2005) has been made. In the Netherlands, Gare du Nord got a wider audience after the release of their album “Sex ‘n Jazz” due to their cooperation with lingerie designer Marlies Dekkers and controversial author Heleen van Rooyen. The latter used their CD as a soundtrack for the release of her new book “Stout”, which means ‘naughty’ in Dutch. The publicity around this book created a lot of exposure for the composer duo… The album “Sex’n Jazz’ also marks the appearance of sensuous Italian singer Dorona Alberti, who’s voice accompanies sexy tunes reminiscent of Parisian Jazz clubs. You can also find their latest album Love For Lunch on this blog. Enjoy!

Jazzanova is German outfit started as a DJ team in 1995 that moved on to production in 1996. In 1998

Jazzanova is German outfit started as a DJ team in 1995 that moved on to production in 1996. In 1998, they founded a collective (a formless group of musicians, producers and DJ’s) as well as running and operating a label, both under the name Sonar Kollektiv. On their remix album entitled Remixes 1997-2000, They literally transform jazzy and downtempo tracks into futuristic anthems with an organic touch almost mesmerizing. The remixes are outstanding and in most of the cases far better than the originals with sweet and subdued sounds. Especially, Ursula Rucker’s “Circe” which is a moody siren song with a smooth funky groove full of complex rhythms that twist and weave with a two step beat : the beats and breaks are very technical, giving a kind of “striving for the future, whilst not forgetting your roots” feel. And miss Rucker is a true poet & a fine spokenword artist. Rucker is known for a diverse repertoire, and for utilizing techniques that catch her listeners attention, both of which have brought her critical acclaim and widespread praise from fans. Rucker has also performed her work at an array of venues such as The Montreal Jazz festival. A smooth languid and sultry voice not to be missed !

Yes peeps, the infamous purveyors of dope beats, heavy bass and mellow vibes are back on the block… from the good ol´ days at the garage in Nottingham right into your eardrums in 2009. The downtempo Nottingham band Deadbeats consist of Damian Stanley and David Estella. The guys that wrote funky for you and various other classic chill out tracks…They have been featured on acclaimed compilations by the likes of Mr. Scruff and Nightmares on Wax The Deadbeats have also done some serious remix work for the likes of Richard Dorfmeister´s TOSCA project and Mark Rae to name but a few.on “made in the shade”, heavenly downtempo vibes mingle perfectly with soopayummy butter beats, supreme funkyness and overall headnod activity… while both the new single “breathe” as well as the deep house influenced “turtle” also stress the slamming dancefloor pop appeal of The Deadbeats in 2009.

Another lifted from “The second time around” LP 1973

Cymande, pronounced (sah-mahn-day), was an eight member group hailing from West Indies and Jamaica. They were the first to record a fusion of funk, jazz, soul and reggae. They had a lasting influence on two major movements in music; Dance/Rare Groove, and Hip Hop. Grandmasterflash and Kool Herc dropped Cymande’s breaks at South Bronx block parties. Cymande was regularly sampled by many hip hop artists including De La Soul, Biz Markie, The Fugees and MC Solar, etc. Cymande also played the Apollo and toured the USA with Al Green and Mandrill in 1973.

This is a cracking album that shows the strength in Malia’s amazing vocal talents, inspired by the likes of Billie Holiday and Nina Simmone. Easy jazz is blended with dance floor grooves to provide an album of surprises that you’ll keep wanting to return to. Ten of the twelve tracks written and Malia Manoukian together. Sings Facilities located between pop, soul, jazz, blues and gospel songs with a vocal range between Malia Sade, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Nina Simone and Billie Holiday (the latter is in a sample even one of the party) – not a copy, but as the essence of their creation, vested with a note, from André Manoukian described as follows: “There is something fragile in her voice, a certain reticence and innocence. This is much more than just technology. the one hand, it goes directly to the melody and sticks to it, on the other, they still expressed the songs on her very own stamp. ““You simply can sing anything,” says André Manoukian, when he could not believe it even more, “jazz, gospel, soul, whatever … just everything.”

On the subject of Massive Attack, another stunner from Blue Lines in honor of today’s Thanksgiving. The whole album should be mandatory listening for anyone wishing to be a part of the human race. One of the best albums of all time for me.

Diggin’ the scene with a gangster lean..
From Discogs
Probably the best, certainly the most important , album of the decade, Blue Lines defined the sound of Britain´s carcass after Thatcher had finished with it. Blue Lines was the first representation of a certain kind of syncretic Britishness that would define the island´s music for the next decade.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Shara Nelson’s vocals, the break, the strings, the piano…at least in the top 5. Got my first copy from Mr Warom around 1993 and it’s still in my walkman.
Taken from Jumpin & Pumpin 12 inch released 1991

from discogs -

Infamous British duo who met in the 1980’s in Manchester. Their very influential discography shows off influences spanning acid house, hardcore techno, ambient, krautrock, 60’s psychedelica, and more. Previously Dougans, as Humanoid, had a UK Top 10 hit with Staker Humanoid. Together as FSOL, they scored a major crossover success with Papua New Guinea. Their first full-length Accelerator charted their dancefloor-friendly early career, after which FSOL moved into deeper, more album-oriented word. Lifeforms was a double-disc set spanning long stretches of breakbeat-flavored ambience. It was followed by Dead Cities which added hip-hop, trip-hop, industrial textures, and bleak urban imagery into their mix of influences. Their ISDN album compiled music from their ISDN-uplinked radio broadcasts from the mid-1990’s. After Dead Cities came out in 1996, they dropped off the radar. After a long hiatus in which they were surrounded by rumors of insanity and drug addiction, the Papua New Guinea Translations concept remix album came out, followed by the full-length The Isness and more material under the Amorphous Androgynous name.

There comes a day when an artist says, “This album is the culmination of all my musical explorations”. For Marc Moulin, that day is now: “I am you” brings together Moulin’s jazz, Moulin’s chanson, Moulin’s electro, Moulin’s new-soul. All the Moulin that made black music a priority for him… in his own particular way. This release is the sexiest, the hottest and the mellowest of his career. Guaranteed to stand the test of time, it will be one for a late afternoon sitting by the fire and for an après-clubbing chill-out session. It will be the ideal companion for dreaming of being somewhere that is obviously better than here. Because without a doubt, “I am you” is the best album in Marc Moulin’s career. Music is the sound of memories, of things that are familiar. But also of sounds for which the present asks the past to dance. This is a trip on which we pitch like a ship, but without danger. With the assurance of arriving safe and sound on a gentle rhythm. It feels good.“I am You”. Is that an enigma? The sound of the shadow? A question of wisdom, perhaps. To understand it, all you need do is listen to this album of rare bravery and conviction.

Continuing the golden splendid night atmosphere created by thefirst “Weekend Nu-Jazz”compilation, “Weekend Nu-Jazz 2”keeps the beautiful soundscape of the series, collects the most representative Nu Jazz music pieces and interprets the Jazz impressions in our hearts. The basic axis of this compilation is the interpretations of traditional Jazz sets. Added by soul funk voices sewn timely and trendy Hip-Hop Rap expressing love appealed to by the new generation, it turns to passionate percussion and keeps moving forward following the microelectronic particles. Even within the avant-garde popular tunes, the emotional monologues in musicians’ hearts are still kept! The German Lounge/Nu Jazz group Club Des Belugas adored by fans all over the world, famous Soul/Funk Jazz producer Quantic and his Quantic Soul Orchestra and Korean-American rapper/songwriter Kero One, whose rap combines Hip Hop and Jazz, all make the most perfect expressions for this kind of music style! Under the conflicts of tradition and avant-garde, there’s no any word or phrase representing the sole codeword of Jazz. In the time full of flashing modern trends, the plentiful music phases in“Weekend Nu-Jazz 2”reveal the original intentions and nature of improvisation vaguely. Maybe, just swing with music!

last night when the plane landed
I grabbed my bag and popped in the headphones
for the 15 minute trek to the shuttle bus
cycling through some downtempo tracks I landed on this

workbench: zoo (dawn)

it’s the best tune I’ve ever heard while weaving my way through
families on their way somewhere else for the holiday
day travelers and college kids texting anxiously
airport employees selling $5 water
bar loungers sipping $9 ales
and limo drivers holding last name placards

when I dropped into my car, I hit repeat for the leisurely drive home

Throwing Snow is an artist that makes music for the love of it rather than moeny, and we like that approach. Here’s a little EP Throwing Snow put out in 08 after the great appearance in Dusted Beats (Volume 2), Throwing Snow came back with his downtempo symphony “In The Myth Of Your First April” for acoustic double bass, keyboards, chords and swing-based broken beats. Playful sounds caress the ears with a magical fragile warmth, gradating in an enchanting soundtrack with an overall feel of calmness, reverie and something sad.

Ive ragged on Orbital once this week, yet I forgot all about Belfast. Its THE comedown song. The only piece of electronica bestowed with the ability to put your head back together after a beast of a night.

The LP version offers more time to recover.

An absolute legend of a track, for me. Simple genius. It is alleged that the idea for the song came about after a very late night cab journey through Belfast. Having had night similar to that through London, I can believe it.

One for you Alex.
