Something that is a little new to me, Macaron Day! I found out about this day from following Follow Me Foodie and her twitter, and I am very glad I did. A celebration founded by Parisian chef, Pierre Hermé, Macaron Day is celebrated world-wide, including Vancouver.

I suggested to my boyfriend that we should go to Soirette Macarons & Tea and buy some macarons after lunch, and although reluctant at first, I finally got him to agree! Also, I do not usually eat macarons because of a bad experience, but I was willing to give them another chance after reading some reviews and recommendations. Plus, I read that Soirette not only uses natural ingredients, and not artificial colours and extracts, but that all donations earned on this day will go to the Make a Wish Foundation!

“Just to set the record straight, these are not the American ones made from coconut which is a macaroon, but the macaron is a Parisian one made with almond flour.” — Follow Me Foodie *I cannot stress this enough; it really bothers me when people get the two mixed up! So now you know : )

Source: Follow Me Foodie

I absolutely adore the interior! It is very cute and simple, yet modern. However, the lack of tables are a little bothersome, as it is usually full, so ordering “take-out” is recommended depending on the time of day you go. It was beautifully decorated for this holiday; it is a pity I was unable to get a picture to show you all!

These were all the macarons left by the time we got there (around 4pm)! It was a good indication that we should have gone earlier in the day. Regardless, it was very difficult deciding what to order, because there is so many to choose from. In the end, I simply asked for the twelve most popular flavours.

I bought the Box of 12 ($22), just so I could bring it home and savour each one in the comfort of my own home, and so my family could enjoy these delicate treats as well.

The first thing I noticed about all these macarons were their smooth shells, as there was not a single crack on either side; they were also quite large! Once I bit into them, the shell was extremely fragile, crisp, and thin, much like an egg shell, while the inside was soft and chewy. The almonds were also distinctive, strong and fresh, making the sugar not overwhelming, so plenty of flavour. What I really like was that it was not too sweet, which made it enjoyable for even my mom, who avoids sweet treats with too much sugar.

However, there were some macarons that were quite mild, and wouldn’t mind a little more flavour. For example, even though the Malibu had coconut in it, it was not quite distinctive and I would not have minded if the coconut was a little stronger. Also, the Rocher’s hazelnut flavour was very subtle, and not as strong as I would like it.

*Even though it says Maple on the top left, it is actually Lemon. My apologies; I did not realize it was lemon until I ate it, because I was editing each picture based on their macaron guide.

After finishing all 12 macarons, I can honestly say that I have developed a love for these delightful treats. Soirette Macarons & Tea have not only changed my opinion for the better, but have also made me have high expectations for macarons. Their service was excellent; I was extremely privileged to have pastry chef Shobna (owner and executive pastry chef) help me with my order, as she was very patient with me, since I took a while deciding. Although the walk is extremely long (near the Olympic Cauldron), the trip is definitely worth it!

I haven’t taken a photography course for a couple of years now. This semester, I finally got

I haven’t taken a photography course for a couple of years now. This semester, I finally got my act together to sign up for the Street Photography course at Langara. I picked this course because I thought it would be interesting, and would be a new area for me to gain new skills.

At the first lecture, I found out that the first shoot involved us asking strangers on the street for permission to take their photos. This is something completely outside of my comfort zone. Every time I thought about the first shoot, my palms get sweaty and I feel queasy. This is why I’m not in sales and marketing. I much prefer sticking my head in the sand and work with tax legislations and numbers.

So Saturday came, and I dreaded going to the class. We met up at the art gallery downtown and got our assignment sheets. The teacher gave us some pointers, and off we go on our own to get pictures. I was nervous as heck.

I spent the next two hours walking around downtown Vancouver, asking strangers if I could take their pictures. I would stutter about it’s for a photography course project, and I could e-mail them their pictures if they wanted. Every person I asked, I braced myself for rejection and ridicule. I mean, if someone ask ME if they could take a picture of me, I’d mostly likely say no.

But guess what? I asked a total of 17 people. Every single one of the 17 people said Yes.

I couldn’t believe it. What are the odds of 100% of the people saying yes! I was so relieved and ecstatic. Not only did everybody say yes, they were mostly very friendly as well. Two of the guys who looked the most scary (only because of their punk rock looks) even gave me hugs after I took their pictures! Needless to say, I was floored.

Now I am looking forward to next week’s class!

Winter in Vancouver is rainy…..7 days a week.Recently, the weather is a liitle bit better. But still a bit wet….or a bit foggy today.
I went out to Downtown Vancouver in the evening to see some beautiful sky.

When the sun get low, it came out through the heavy clouds.

Then, I started walking because there was no more sun lighting up the buildings.

Then, I noticed the beautiful snowy mountain is now out of the clouds.

This is the amazing time of Downtown Vancouver.

Local musicians donated their time and collaborated their acoustic talent last week at the annual Sing It Fwd concert.

With the mindset of “music changes lives” and the idea of passing on that notion, the artists put on a mind-blowing show in front of a sold out crowd at The Vogue Theatre.

The event was a fundraiser for The Saint James Music Academy (SJMA) – a music education program for children in the Downtown Eastside. The program offers high quality music instruction in piano, guitar, cello, violin and choir at no cost to the students’ families.

Andrew Huculiak and Cayne McKenzie of We Are The City started the evening off strong with their powerful duet on drums and keys.

Aidan Knight followed with his sweet voice and his “I’ve never done this before” attitude as he split the crowd in half to sing, or rather hum, different parts of his song. After asking the crowd whether they wanted a fun or “contemplative” song, he decided to combine the two, and did not disappoint.

He was accompanied by members of the Friendly Friends, Olivier Clements and Julia Wakal.

Hannah Georgas and Ryan Guldemond, of Mother Mother, joined forces with the Saint James Music Academy for “Bit by Bit”. As the kids left the stage, smiles from ear to ear, Ryan gave each of the kids a high five — a simple move that probably took their evening from fantastic, to ridiculously amazing.

Dan Mangan made a special appearance, causing many of the females in the audience to swoon. Notorious for being the unlisted guest at events it wasn’t a big surprise for many, but a welcomed surprise nonetheless. Alongside the Saint James Music Academy he put on a great performance.

C.R. Avery wowed the crowd with his multi-talented ways. He went from beat boxing “Maggie’s Farm” and playing the harmonica, to rhythmically vocalizing about more serious topics, and even giving a shout-out to The Waldorf regarding its closure.

Videos ran in between some of the acts, showing videos of the students of the Saint James Music Academy being interviewed by the musicians. They were light-hearted, entertaining and proved to be very interesting with the innocent but sometimes sassy remarks. My favorite video was the one where Shad was “taught” how to play instruments by the kids. Apparently they did a good job as he stepped on to the stage and sang wholeheartedly like a pro.

Yukon Blonde changed the pace with their Indie Rock tunes, wild hair and equally as wild attitudes.

Fans anxiously awaited for Hey Ocean! to perform, and the wait proved to be worth it for them, obvious by the constant chatter and applause.

MCs, Cory Ashworth and Tamara Stanners from Peak FM, did a fantastic job introducing the bands and maintaining an upbeat and fun vibe in between acts. Their displayed appreciation for the musicians in conjunction with their positive energy, went a long way in making the event an even greater success.

Sing It Fwd founders Ambrosia Humphrey, Director of HR at HootSuite Media and Dave Vertesi of Hey Ocean! share similar passions as the Executive Director of the SJMA, Kathryn Walker. All of them feel strongly about community and equality, and share the notion that music changes lives. Together they strive to raise funds and awareness for the importance of youth music education, while also providing the children exposure to role models in the industry.

L to R: Tamara Stanners, Ambrosia Humphrey, Dave Vertesi, Cory Ashworth

Their partnership has achieved great things, including raising much needed money for the organization. With the help of the Vancouverites who paid to attend the concert and/or have donated to the SJMA they are surpassing all expectiations that they originally had, with each year achieving more than the past. Last year they raised a total of $25,000, while this year, in concert ticket sales alone, they raised $32,000, all of which went to the Saint James Music Academy. Their goal of $50,000 is attainable and will hopefully be reached through donations from the loving hearts and open pockets of those who support the cause.

Flat Ruthie and I had an amazing time this weekend. We attended Cirque du Soleil with my dear husband on Saturday evening. It was amazing. From the moment we saw the big tent we got excited. The performance was incredible, the costumes remarkable and the music astounding. We were transported into another world, one of magic, suspense, colour and incredible acts of human talent.

The performance we saw was Amaluna, based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. To see some video clips, visit the website http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/shows/amaluna/tickets/vancouver.aspx This will give you a glimpse of what we experienced.

The entire evening was a lot of fun. We took the sky train downtown and then walked to the site. After the show we walked back to the station. Lady Gaga was in town for a performance and the streets were full of Gaga fans all dressed up. It was wonderful to be amongst them and to feel the energy. I stopped to compliment a couple of young girls dressed for the show. We picked up fish and chips on the way home to complete the evening. The tickets were a Christmas gift from me to my husband. It turned out to be a perfect gift as he thoroughly enjoyed the performance as well as the company of me and Flat Ruthie!

We don’t do things like this very often so it made it very special.

Is there anything you do once in a while that is extra special?

Although I will always travel, Vancouver is now and always will be my hometown. With the limited time I have left here before I spread my wings and leave the proverbial nest to Europe, the eastern side of Canada and beyond, I’ve been making sure to take time for capturing this city.

Finally sorting out the technical side of my software woes, I am able to sort through some shots I took with my newest camera. The Nikon D600 is the first full frame I have been able to afford and the remarkable outcome has converted me.

Anyways, I’ll throw another couple of photos your way soon enough! Thanks for checking out this photo-blog!!

Where there’s vegan food, you’ll often find gluten-free options. The reverse isn’t necessarily true though. For instance, when I popped into Mygoodness! Gluten & Wheat Free Kitchen on East Broadway and inquired about vegan options, the proprietor responded, “I’m not vegan.”

However, there will be plenty of vegan food products on site when the Gluten Free Expo returns to Vancouver on January 13, 2013. The event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Vancouver Convention Centre, will feature several speakers and more than 100 vendors offering samples and selling their goods. Tickets are $12 at the door, and kids 10 and under get in free.

Vendors known for their vegan products include local businesses Daiya Foods, GluteNull, Indigo Food Café, North of 49 Naturals, Silver Hills Bakery, and Vega, as well as U.S. brands Coconut Bliss, Earth Balance, and Earth Island (Follow Your Heart).

The Vancouver Christmas Market is filled with Christmas cheer while everyone got into the spirit. I loved the German toys and watching the food being cooked made your mouth water. There were many deal sites that offered a package deal especially if you had kids they could then go on the carousel rides. There was a line up to get into the Kathe Wohlfahrt who made traditional German Christmas Ornaments The nut cracker and the mobiles that move when you light candles under it were my favorite.

After a delay in opening (the original opening date was in September), Chipotle is finally joining the downtown core serving up healthy casual Mexican fare. In keeping with their slogan of Food With Integrity, Chipotle uses locally-sourced organic ingredients and meats without antibiotics or added hormones. They also hand-mash their guacamole in-house, making it worth the extra $2.21.

Dining experience:

Interior of Chipotle Vancouver

Being the first day in business, it was busy with a long lineup as expected. A lot of people were probably ordering to go because there were still many seats available. I was impressed with how smoothly the place is managed especially considering that it’s their first day. We were immediately greeted with a friendly staff that explained the menu to us. And after about 10 minutes, it was already our turn to place our orders, just the speed downtown needs!

Food:

Carnitas Burrito

Carnitas Burrito ($8.95) – 2.5/5
“Flour tortilla, cilantro-lime rice, black beans, tomatillo-red chili salsa, sour cream, cheese”

The carnitas is seasoned with a mix of thyme, bay, juniper berries and pepper and braised to tenderness. It’s the only choice of meat that is not spicy at all so I picked their spicy salsa to make up for it. The ingredients melded well together, with plenty of juices from the carnitas, salsa, sour cream and some ooey-gooeyness from the melting cheese. I would’ve preferred some stronger flavors overall and a stronger presence of lime flavors. I’d probably pick another type of salsa next time because it sounds like they have more ingredients like cilantro or corn at play rather than straight up spiciness from the chili.

Barbacoa Soft Tacos

Barbacoa Soft Tacos ($8.95) – N/A
“Soft flour tacos, tomatillo-green salsa, sour cream, romaine lettuce”

I only tried two bites of this, not enough to give it a rating but I did like it more than the Carnitas Burrito. I found it fresher-tasting, with more citrusy and lighter which makes a great choice for lunch. It is a bit messy to eat though with the saucy barbacoa, but hey, moist is much better than dry!

All in all, quality ingredients and good textures. Perfect with a little more oomph in the flavour department!

la taqueria (fairview slopes)

Yay!! I was out on assignment in the Fairview Slopes flying solo covering a demonstration being made nearby the Chinese Consulate in protest of the Chinese government releasing North Korean refugees back to North Korea.

la taqueria (fairview slopes)

Figured I should just grab lunch while I’m in the area, so I chose La Taqueria on Broadway and Cambie! Finally, a chance to satiate my Mexican food craving! Eric was kind enough to join me for my Mexican lunch break Pinche Tacos, baby, pinche tacos!

la taqueria (fairview slopes)

I opted for the 4 meat tacos for $9.50. From bottom left clockwise: Tinga de Pollo (chicken with chorizo in a chipotle tomato sauce topped with mexican cheese and sour cream), Pollo Con Mole (Maple Hills chicken with chocolate mole sauce), Al Pastor (pork marinated in achiote chilli and pineapple), and Carnitas (pork confit with pickled red onions).

la taqueria (fairview slopes)

I loved the Pollo Con Mole because the mole sauce was so delicious! Sweet, deeply chocolatey and still savory. The Tinge de Pollo was great with the cheese and sour cream topping. The Al Pastor also had that sweet-savory thing going with the pineapples. Lovely pork! I thought the Carnitas fell a bit short in flavor, which was sad since it’s one of my favorite types of tacos.

All in all a very satisfying lunch despite a few minor disappointments, such as the lack of cilantro, onions and radishes. But hey, I’d come back

A cool, but mild spring evening. Robert and I jaunted down to Gastown to unwind and just revel in the atmosphere.

the diamond

We had a bit of trouble finding The Diamond initially, but after a bit of wandering and plenty of backtracking I finally spotted the sign! Turns out it’s on the upper floor of once of the buildings across the square from Blood Alley.

the diamond

We got to sit right by a window and we were both so happy with the view that we had to take some photos!

the diamond

I decided to have a glass of the Domaine de Censy, a 2009 French Muscadet. Robert ordered a cocktail, but I just can’t remember what it was….!

the diamond

We shared the Fresh Hummus to start. Sprinkled with fresh parsley, smoked paprika powder and a drizzle of olive oil and a dollop of cream and served with grilled bread it was packed with flavor and was quite nice.

the diamond

Mains!! I had the Duck Rillette, which came with crostini, fruit preserves and pickled mustard seed. The rillette was super rich! smooth, meaty and gamey duck flavor and actually quite perfect with either the sweet preserves and the tart mustard. Delicious!

the diamond

Robert had the Damn Good Grilled Cheese which had smoked cheddar, gouda, and an apple slaw. Awesome bread as a vehicle is always great. The ooey, gooey cheese was just the right amount of richness and the apple slaw was a nice touch. Gourmet grilled cheese

A delicious evening and a relaxing way to unwind from a day of work. Loved the intimate setting, the cozy space and the great view. My only complaint is that it’s so dark inside!

“This will definitely help both renters and prospective buyers of rental properties,” Tom Durning of Tenant Resource and Advisory Centre (TRAC).

“We are pushing for other municipalities [in B.C.] to follow Vancouver’s standards of maintenance bylaws,” added Durning.

City staff presentation on rental database

The City of Vancouver heard from Brenda Prosken, general manager of community services, on Wednesday regarding initiatives to hold landlords accountable to higher standards of rental maintenance.

Prosken also discussed methods for reducing the number of rental units with current violations.

Licensed residential rental buildings have the following requirements:

• five or more units

• SROs

• purpose-built rental housing

• non-market housing

• supportive housing

• publicly owned buildings are included

Approximately 70,000 of Vancouver’s 131,000 rental units are currently included in the scope of the Rental Property Standards database.

This database essentially aims to make landlord and rental property information available and easily accessible to all. Current models are New York and Toronto.

This database will be especially helpful for those living in the West End, with over 80 per cent of residents currently renting.

Industrial land development in outlying regions will continue to strain transit in Vancouver, especi

Industrial land development in outlying regions will continue to strain transit in Vancouver, especially at primary skytrain hubs in Downtown Vancouver

“Vancouver residents pay a high price for the region’s growing density,” said Metro Vancouver director Andrea Reimer, stating that nearly 50 per cent of transit users downtown are not from Vancouver.

The directors at the Metro Vancouver meeting discussed the report on monitoring the use of industrial land in Metro Vancouver, specifically areas that are underused and areas that could be intensified (as in, “building up” industrial or commercial spaces on top of existing industrial buildings).

The major issue brought up by most of the board was the strain on transportation and the transit system. Director Derek Corrigan made an excellent query: “How do we get transit to be a reward for these industrial areas?”

Reimer stated that Vancouver does not have any industrial land to consider developing other than the area between the Pacific Station terminal and VCC-Clark station.

“The industrial land development does not directly us [in Vancouver] but the strain on the transit system will really be felt at major stations such as Waterfront and Granville and City Centre stations downtown,” said Reimer.

She also added that she brought up the idea that low-income housing should be built around newly-developed industrial areas in Surrey, Coquitlam and Langley. This, she asserts, would help to alleviate many of the transit concerns that were raised.
