Blame the pills you take every morning! A common side effect of many medications, including those for allergies, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pain, anxiety or depression (a lot of the most common prescriptions written today) is reduced saliva flow. This is called xerostomia or “dry mouth” and it is a big reason you need to tell your dentist about all of your medications you may be taking. If you are on one of these medications that cause dry mouth here are some suggestions to reduce your risk of dental decay:

• Use over-the-counter oral moisturizers – these ususally come in lozenge, spray or rinse form and can keep your mouth moist and more comfortable
• Drink lots of water all day long. This helps rinse food debris from your mouth and keeps the tissues moist
• Chew sugar-free gum (those containing xylitol are most helpful) or suck on sugar-free candies to stimulate saliva flow
• Avoid beverages that add to the problem like coffee, alcohol and soft drinks
• Check with your physician to see if a lower dose or different medication could help treat your condition without adding the side effect of dry mouth

Dry mouth not only leads to more dental decay but your gums can be affected as well.  This is not the time in your life to skip your dental checkups, in fact you  may be told by your dental hygienist that she wants to see your smiling face in her chair a little more often! Regular dental hygiene visits can help clear away plaque and bacteria so you can maintain good oral health – which leads to better overall health – as you age.

NEW HOPE, Pa. (CBS) – The holiday season comes to life at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope this month with performances of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play featuring a former American Idol star with local ties.

Justin Guarini, who is now raising his family in Doylestown, grabs the lead in the show which premiered 16 years ago and was inspired by the classic film.

The show is performed as a 1940s live radio broadcast in front of a live studio audience.

Growing up in Bucks County, Guarini says he’s proud to play the Playhouse especially at this time of year.

“You know it’s a perfect show for the perfect time, it’s a classic tale that people know and are going to get to see a really unique spin on,” says Guarini.

The show runs from Thursday, December 13th through Sunday, December 30th and tells the story of George Bailey as he considers his demise one fateful Christmas Eve.

The ensemble will feature more than two dozen characters on stage.

Some of these cases of bad breath are caused by poor oral hygiene or active gum disease. But a lot of people who have healthy smiles and great oral health still end up with stinky breath from time to time – let’s look at the usual suspects:

• Foods – Onions and garlic are what we normally think of when avoiding food that can cause bad breath. Dairy products, coffee, spicy foods, and some sweets can also make your breath stinky. • Dieting – Most of us don’t think of losing weight causing bad breath. When your body breaks down fat certain chemicals are released that may make your breath unpleasant.

Avoid bad breath and a bad impresssion by brushing and flossing every day. Don’t forget your tongue –  bacteria live on our tongues and contribute to bad breath. A simple tongue scraper or brushing with your toothbrush will help.

Chewing sugarless gum is great for reducing bad breath temporarily. Sugarless gum that contains xylitol is actually good for your teeth because chewing helps remove food debris and stimulates saliva production. The xylitol will help prevent bacterial growth in your mouth.

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (CBS) – A four-wheeler with a plow attached helped to remove snow off the sidewalks in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

While some people have welcomed fall with a smile, accepting winter with open arms may not be as easy.

“This is what we have to look forward to the next couple months,” said one woman.

At Nonno’s coffee shop, customers are cozy, ordering hot drinks, watching the snow fall from inside.

“It’s nice watching traffic and relaxing,” said Bill Dunn of Doylestown.

For the people, children imparticular, who love this type of weather, playing in the snow never gets old. Five-year-old Mackenzie Maroney of Seattle,Washington built a snowman at her grandfather’s house and begged him to take her sledding while she’s in town.

Attendance was moderate but those who were in the college’s gymnasium enthusiastically sang along with the headliners.  Many daring concertgoers even took it upon themselves to crowd surf much to the chagrin of the school.

We had the distinct pleasure of talking to Circa bass player Nick Beard and guitarist Colin Frangicetto with additional input from drummer Steve Clifford.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Saturday marks another shopping “holiday” in the country. For the third year in a row, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, coined Small Business Saturday by American Express, is dedicated to the mom and pop businesses in the area and across the country.

“Small businesses can compete with the big box stores by having a different type of product, by having better service or by being more convenient,” said Dave Dickson, district director of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) of Eastern Pennsylvania.

The credit card company first introduced the concept in 2010 to put small businesses in the spotlight during the busiest shopping weekend of the year. Awareness for last year’s Small Business Saturday jumped 38 percent from the year before according to Michelle Dolberry, head of strategic initiatives with Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP), a non-partisan organization that advocates for women and minorities in business and is leading the Small Business Saturday Coalition made of 159 advocacy organizations.

“Main Streets” and the small businesses that make them up across the country are taking part, excited for an opportunity to show what they offer. Haddonfield in Camden County is just one of the local towns participating.

“(Shoppers) see what’s available and how there’s so many neat and interesting things up and down the block and we’re one of them,” said Bernadette Hennessy May, owner of Rhinoceros Gamery and Toy Store in downtown Haddonfield.

Last year’s holiday shopping season was their first in Haddonfield (Her sister owns the original store in Jenkintown.)”I can’t tell you how many people came in and said, ‘Oh yeah, we didn’t even know you were here and we’re just walking because of Small Business Saturday,’” she said.

The same can be said for Busy Bee Toys, located in downtown Doylestown, Bucks County. Owner Nerice Kendter says small shops like hers focuses on a personal touch that is not found in large retailers.

“I hand pick each and every item that I bring in. My staff and I will walk people through the store, assisting them in picking out just the right gift,” she said. “(Customers) are getting the personalized attention that they’re not going to get from the computer screen or the big box stores. It really is a wonderful shopping experience.”

Revenue is important, WIPP says some businesses reported they quadrupled their sales last year on this day, but to Kendter it is also a chance to build relationships with neighbors and show off and help the community she lives in and loves.

“We in turn are making donations to local organizations. We are supporting our local schools. So, it really is a give-and-take relationship,” she said.

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) says one in every two people work for or own a small business in the country. The agency, which does not officially sponsor Small Business Saturday, is excited for the economic jolt the day could bring.

“Make it happen guys!” said Dickson. “It’s small business that’s going to bring us out of the economic dilemma that we’re in.”

BUCKINGHAM TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) — Firefighters are still hosing down hot spots left over from a multi-alarm blaze inside an industrial complex adjacent to the Doylestown Airport along Old Easton Road in Buckingham Township, Bucks County, just outside of Doylestown.

Dispatchers say they received the first call about a fire inside the 55,000 square-foot Arbonite complex about 5:30 a.m. By that point, the building was already heavily involved. The fire was placed under control by 7:45 a.m.

The company makes industrial chemical coatings and linings. Doylestown Fire Company spokesman Larry Brown says, obviously there are some increased concerns with this kind of fire.

“The Bucks County Hazardous Materials Team is on scene monitoring the air and has not found any problems with the air quality in the area,” Brown explained.

There were some reports of explosions, but there was no need for any evacuations because there are no homes in the immediate vicinity.

Eyewitness News talked with the owner off camera. The building was one of several on the property. Operations in this one location were destroyed, including equipment, and raw rubber material.

He said all chemicals were properly stored. The company employs 25 people.

The owner also believes the fire may have started in the boiler room, but fire officials say they are still investigating what ignited the fire.

So far, no injuries have been reported.

Traffic is being detoured in the area and Route 313, Swamp Road, a major traffic artery in the area has been shut down because of the fire.
