Let me start off by being 100% honest here.

I have some very controversial views and views that go way far a field of the medical establishment. You know those guys who are the whipping boys for Big Pharma and the various and sundry in-the-box thinkers that make up so many sanctioning bodies that control medicine these days.

In other words I dare to be different but you should know what I am saying is not accepted as gospel truth except by a hand full of lucky cancer survivors.

Here are 2 big things you should know about what I think right away.

1) I think the concept that antioxidants given during chemo or radiation being harmful and benefiting the cancer is about the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. Even a first year oncology fellow knows that cancer does not behave anywhere near normal cells.

2) I believe that except for rare genetic exception, most cancers could be prevented specifically by taking what would be considered much higher than normal doses of antioxidants such as fish oil and Co Q10, resvertrol and berry extracts to name just a few.

Here are some other things you should know.

1) There is a direct correlation between high fructose corn syrup, sugar consumption and refined white starch foods and cancer. Not so with ANY of the artificial sweeteners in sub psychotic doses no matter what you read on the internet. This is all not withstanding sugar’s link to obesity, heart diseases and diabetes.

2) Man made fats are as bad as man made sugars. That includes some Trans fats and hydrogenated fats still found in large numbers in many foods. Avoid them

3) Berry-derived anthocyanidins may reduce heart diseases, cancer and decrease infections. This is the basis behind my 2 berry-derived wonder supplements, Cardio Booster and Immune Booster.

4) Vitamins A thru E, green tea, resvertrol and fish oil have all been shown in laboratory studies to decrease the incidence and in some cases regress cancer cells.

Because of the poor quality of soil and air and water pollution I think the choice is simple.

Take the best of what Mother Nature can currently offer and clean it up with modern toxin-free processing to give the highest quality purest product.

Then you have Dr Dave’s Best; my dietary defense against cancer.

For the past 10 years I have been writing, researching and manufacturing, ever purer and better form

For the past 10 years I have been writing, researching and manufacturing, ever purer and better forms of Omega 3 Pharmaceutical Grade Fish oil.

Today I want to summarize some of the more important aspects of fish oil and heart health in condensed form.

First off, no matter what anyone tells you, heart disease, for most of us, is an inflammatory process. It is NOT caused by high cholesterol although certain forms of high cholesterol are “markers” for it. As is often the case, so called modern medicine has treated one of the symptoms of the disease not the disease itself.

The disease is actually inflammation and it is a common problem of us, in all of our organ systems, not just our heart.

In our joints, it causes arthritis, in our brains it causes dementia, in our blood vessels, the area of our body that is most exposed to harmful chemicals (perhaps next to our skin) it causes clogging.

The real cholesterol we are trying to fight is the result of and part of an inflammatory response in our body. We call it “oxidized” cholesterol, since it is a part of the inflammatory chain.

In truth, there is nothing wrong with having an inflammatory response. It is a normal response to an abnormal diet and abnormal life styles.
It is clear, from research and ever mounting data, that the simple addition of Omega 3 fish oil, in higher quantities, to the diet would reduce heart disease deaths in this country by about a quarter of a million people a year. And reduce health care costs by hundreds of billions because of its effects on all forms of heart disease, including congestive heart failure, regular old coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeats, dementias, cancers and other forms.

The data is still being ignored and “traditional medicine and traditional medical journals (also known as drug company sponsored medicine and drug company sponsored journals) continues to publish “refutes” to the use of fish oil.

The most recent one got picked up by the lay press and published as “fish oil not good for heart disease”.

In this study, several thousand older Dutch participants were given a small dose of fish oil Omega 3’s ( EPA and DHA of about 300 mg) in a stick of margarine ( what was in that?) an average of 4 years after they had already the diagnosis of active heart disease . These people were on an average of 4 prescription drugs and had an average age of just shy of 70.

What this study really showed was, that if you give older people who already have heart disease and are already on 4 drugs for it, too small a dose of fish oil type omegas, in a vehicle loaded with god only knows what kind of inflammatory fats (margarine), you get no additional benefits by adding fish oil.
This was published by a “reputable” journal. One that would never dream of publishing such a poorly done study on ANY supplement.

Predictably though, it had the effect they wanted. It got picked up and disseminated as fact, to the internet.

It seems people are so bored of hearing good things, that sooner or later, the only thing that sells, is something “bad” even if it ‘s manufactured.

The data on healthy hearts and fish oil goes back almost 40 years now and in my opinion, the fact that we are not using it in higher doses, on more people is not only not scientific, its malpractice.

Reduction of the inflammatory fraction of cholesterol, the oxidized LDL, is one of the many things fish oil does that is good for your heart. It also lowers triglycerides, which are part of the inflammatory cycle, when they are too high. It also improves insulin response, decreases organ and subcutaneous fat, which fights obesity.

It also reduces the types of cholesterol fractions that are associated with people who have “normal” cholesterol, but still have heart attacks.

The percentage varies, but somewhere around 40% of people who have heart attacks, have “normal” cholesterol. This is because of genetic, environmental and nutritional (diets low in Omega 3’s for instance) factors that cause “undetectable” forms of cholesterol to rise. These things have names like Lp(a) and various apoproteins.

The bottom line here, is that there are tests like NMR of the lipids and VAP (some have other names) that will test for these so called hidden markers and that is what they are, markers of inflammation, that raise your risk of heart disease, but your insurance company is not going to pay for them and your doctor is not going to order them.

So, if you have high cholesterol, you automatically (and medical-legally must) get a statin and if you don’t have high cholesterol, you can still get heart disease. But again, your doctor is not likely to recommend fish oil, since he or she doesn’t believe in it, or doesn’t know about it, or doesn’t think you are at risk. Talk about a crap shoot!

Then again, you could take fish oil, since it changes the fractions of cholesterol to more beneficial and less dangerous, often without changing the total number. It also increases your good cholesterol (again in the meaningful fractions) and it decreases almost every marker of inflammation you’d care to measure.

But no drug company is making trillions off of it yet. They are, however, trying to create new drugs, to lower these “hidden” types of cholesterol.

While we wait for “FDA approved therapy”, millions of people will get sick and die and the therapy will have serious side effects, guaranteed.

If that is not MAL-evolent Practice I don’t know what is.

Here’s a drill I invented a few months ago to help me work on my rolling safes. As I’ve stated before, the ability to execute a good safe can easily mean the difference between winning or losing a match against a tough opponent. Very few people practice safes. Dont’ fall into that trap! If you maintain discipline and practice your safeties, you’ll have an advantage over more skilled opponents and you’ll win many more matches. I filed this drill in The Drills tab under Safeties.

See the setup in the diagram below. The cue ball is on the head spot. The object ball is one diamond down table from the cue ball. The objective is to shoot the cue ball through the object ball using normal follow, and make the cue ball come to rest in one of the ghost ball spots. Start on the far right side and try to hit each ghost ball spot. This is not as easy as it looks, but with practice you will develop a feel for it.

One of my friends at California Billiards claims I’ve developed an analytical method for determining exactly where to aim on the object ball to hit each of these spots. According to him, I developed this method based on some of the theoretical work of Dr. Dave Alciatore, who works in the Mechanical Engineering department at Colorado State University. At this point, I will neither confirm nor deny this accusation.

Dr. Dave’s Best 36 Hour 18% Off Sale
Offer expires Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 12:00 Noon EST
By the time you read this there is a very good chance that I will be somewhere in the midst of an almost 80 mile run through the Canadian Rockies called aptly “The Canadian Death Race”

Billed as North America’s toughest race this run has humbled more than a few people in the past including me although I did mange to finish it in 2008.

In the past we created a complicated donation structure rewarding people according to how much they donated.

This got very cumbersome and left some people who did not want to donate out in the cold.

So this year I am doing it differently and much simpler

I am simply having a 36 hours 18% off everything we make sale event. ( Note this does not include products made by other people or companies and sold on our site!)

When it’s done I will donate as much as I can from the proceeds to our charity
http://www.theraceagainstdeath.org/
and then from there onto the IM ABLE foundation.

So it’s up to you to help me.

I am out there putting this body heart and soul on the lien to raise awareness of a couple of things:
1) Anyone can help and make a difference

2) Keeping people moving even disabled kids and others is very worthwhile and impacts their life in a hugely positive way

3) At over 50 years of age I do not consider myself old. As a matter of fact because of what I make and do for myself and you, we are both growing younger. I am out to prove it and help people in the process. In other words I am putting my money where my mouth is in a big way! Lets see the other docs on the internet try this!!!

When you buy something on sale in the next 36 hours (Sale ends Sunday August 1 at 12 noon EST) a portion of the proceeds will go to the above charity.

I am willing to stand up for what I believe and help people. Please help me do that and help yourself to some huge savings in the process. I will make sure I get a pic of me giving a check to the IM ABLE folks so you know your donation got where it’s supposed to.

I am not trying to save the world just make it younger and healthier. Please help and stock up on what you need!

Doc

PS some things will be out of stock before the sale ends so its first come first served and if we get too low on stock I reserve the right to end the sale early although its going to be pretty hard from a mountain top in Western Canada!

You see, Rosie really does not stand a chance; at least that is what behavioral psychologists say. H

You see, Rosie really does not stand a chance; at least that is what behavioral psychologists say.

Her main weapons are that she represent the underdog. Rosie actually is not a slob, she has complete and free access to TV and other media, and is not poor by any stretch of the imagination.

And she is fat.
Sorry, but that is the big bottomed line in human behavioral approach terms.

People cannot look at a fat person and feel the same respect they do for a thinner person, no matter how wonderful the fat person is.

Hey, gluttony is one of the 7 deadly sins, right?

Then again, so is greed but you can’t really see greed. You can see fat. Just look to your left and look to your right.

If you were to honestly poll and I mean honestly, poll a million people who knew nothing about either of these people and said they were feuding, and ask them to pick a side, guess whose side they’d be on.

Want more proof? Ok: you are now in a coliseum filled with people you don’t know. Over the loudspeaker they announce your name and say that your fate will be determined by the crowd. Which would you rather hear? “Fat and Slob” or “bully and bad hair”?

Bully and bad hair never gave anyone cancer. Bully and bad hair never gave anyone diabetes. Bully and bad hair never gave anyone heart disease or stroke or arthritis unless there is such a thing as arthritis of the scalp.

The study that said it all was the one that found that people would rather have sex with someone who had a sexually transmitted disease than a fat person.

Please don’t kid yourself if you are fat. You are not bad. You are not evil. You are not worthless. You may not be a glutton. You are very probably smart, driven, kind, sensitive and a very meaningful part of our society. But as long as you are fat, very few people will see you that way. When your name comes up, there will be the image of a fat person there if even for just an instant.

Psychologists talk about people who sabotage themselves.

What group of people do you think sabotage themselves the most often without meaning to? If you said fat people, you are right. If you are fat, get some help.

Get the body you want and the respect and love you deserve.

Well I am at it again to answer a real and important question. Does TV watching really make you fat?

It turns out that there is a direct correlation between body fat and TV watching. As you might guess there are also less direct correlations with diabetes and other illnesses.

Still since we have the choice to hit the “off” button, we can’t really blame the TV.

What can be said for those of you who like conspiracy theories is that the “powers that be” are hard at work figuring out how to manipulate human behavior.

Examples include increased “food and eating” programming among commercials during peak TV hours. And on a more sinister note, a huge (at least 50% increases) in what most of us would call junk food-based commercials aimed directly at young children. There has also been a big increase in the general programming aimed at young children.

Now if this sounds like “tobacco company” type behavior it really does begin to sound conspiratorial doesn’t it!

The arguments against this from Big Food are that you need food to live and you don’t need cigarettes.

Other interesting fact associated with the weight gain we see with increased TV watching is related to energy expenditure.

It is true that people who watch more TV do less. Their energy expenditures on a daily basis are lower, meaning they don’t make up for the time sitting on their arses with exercise.

But believe it or not that does not seem to be the real reason they are fatter.

It appears the real reason is they eat more while watching TV.

So I will leave the conclusions about programming people’s minds and behavior to you. Those are the facts; you can do what you want with them. I wonder what would happen if every major news channel aired positive news about the economy for the next 3 weeks?

Ok now to the most important part: what can you do about it!

1) As I have said before, TV is pretty much the enemy of health in my mind but you can do something healthy like ride an exercise bike while you watch if you must watch.

2) Learn the location and the action of the “off” button.

3) Be aware of programming that “suggests” that you need to eat something or drink something, especially if you have young children.

4) If you have serious problems with appetite I have a whole product line that is very very effective at helping people take control of their appetites, get rid of their sweet tooth, end their compulsive eating even while watching TV and of course helps them morph their bodies into something healthier and happier.

A few months ago I took a little run through the Canadian Rockies. I ran 78 miles to be exact and when I crossed the finish line of this race known as the Canadian Death Race (because if you finish you probably cheated death) I had achieved something that only 35% of the people who started as solo runners did.

I finished the race!

Now there were many factors in this. As a matter of fact, I am in the process of writing a book about the experience but I can distill it down to a few biggies.

And it’s one of those biggies I want to tell you about now.

Trekking poles.

After attempting to come down one of the mountain sides in practice I realized there is no way my quads and my legs are going to survive such a race. Enter “Dr. Death” also known as Dale, the originator of the Death Race. After a 5 minute session on trekking pole use, I was set and I found them to be one of the major keys to completing such a long, hard race over such difficult terrain.

They especially helped me literally fly down the mountain sides without breaking my neck. This helped make up for my less than stellar speed on the climbing side of things.

So when I got back from the Death Race I decided that just about any run on any trail I would take would see my trusty trekking poles by my side.

Thus when I showed up at some shorter races in my local area I got a bunch of funny looks and a few comments about “the dude with the ski poles”.

Most had never even seen them let alone seen anyone using them.

What my running friends didn’t know is that trekking polls stand poised to be “the next big thing” along with band training in the fitness industry.

And with good reason, they help you burn more fat.

I could go on and on about why I use trekking poles for my trail runs, but the main reason I want to bring them to your attention is that recent studies in the Journal of Strength Conditioning Research have shown that they increase the calorie burn without increasing the perceived exertion of the exercise.

So whether you walk or run, you burn more calories and you don’t feel more tired.

It has been estimated that you actually burn about 20% more calories using the poles because they engage your upper body and core.

So if you are looking for a way to improve your walking/running efficiency in terms of calorie burning this is a great way to do it.

And if like me you live in areas of ice and snow in the winter, the poles behave like extra legs so now you have 4 legs instead of 2!

Get out, move and enjoy!

They are absolutely horrible for your health but not for the reasons you might think. But before we get to that, let’s look at some background info to set this up.

There are certain controversies that ultimately develop a life of their own and are unrelated to any facts. Examples are things like artificial sweeteners, which are universally touted as evil, wicked, mean and nasty no matter what their source or chemical makeup. Facts like people who work with NutraSweet need Tyvec suits and respirators (so do people who work with giant sand piles) and NutraSweet is the most complained about food substance (guess what came before it; saccharin!) ever to grace the FDA’s books.

Stevia, which was never tested until recently, however, got cart blanche among the cyber public.

My position on sweeteners is very clear from years of emails and blogs in the past. I will simply say the following: refined sugar caused widespread slavery, tooth decay, obesity, diabetes and every time someone makes a fortune panning artificial sweeteners (wait until the next one comes out!) the sugar lobby is laughing all the way to the bank.
None of this apparently offsets the handful of people whose testimonials fuel the fortunes of writers, bloggers and others who cop to the popular opinion without so much as a thought. Yes, your crappy life decisions and bad luck could indeed be due to artificial sweeteners, cell phones and government conspiracies but in truth they might just be bad decisions coupled with bad luck.

Now cell phones have not yet reached the proportion of artificial sweeteners in that no one has made a fortune and a career badmouthing them but I am sure someone will succeed. After all, the tumor in my head must be from cell phone use, right? I mean it has to be from something that someone else caused!

But in point of fact, so far, the only studies we have on cell phone usage are mice studies and they suggest that when you expose mice to the electromagnetic frequencies emitted by cell phones it actually reverses their dementia.

Yep, that’s right; cell phones make demented mice better! Now mice aren’t people and we always need to be careful about associations but the brain is an electromagnetic organ and as MRI’s have shown magnetic resonance has at least some imaging benefits so it’s not too far a stretch to think we might want to figure out some resonant frequency therapy for Alzheimer’s and the like.

How ironic would it be if cell phones protected us from this kind of dementia? Our kids would undoubtedly live Alzheimer’s-free lives!

There is a problem, however, as I alluded to in my opening sentence. Cell phones do indeed cause cancer and dementia.

No one has a name for this phenomenon so I have decided I shall be the first and the name I chose for this disease is T.H.U.D.

That stands for Telephonic Heterodynamic Ultra Dementia. A loose definition is: the stupidity of people who share vapid, meaningless conversations with an uncaring world by talking way too loud about stupid crap on their cell phones and try to carry on multiple conversations and tasks while talking.

In addition to auto accidents, this kind of moronic usage also causes people to forget that there are other people around and to blindly walk into them on the streets of New York and other major cities as I can testify. Since when did spatial and situational awareness become an option?

I am waiting for the first recorded cell phone mugging which might go like this:

Mugger: gimme yo money.

His cell phone rings: I tole you not ta call me on this phone bixxx!

Victim: Please, sir, don’t hurt me.

Victims’ phone rings: hold on, honey, I am being mugged… what’s that? Don’t forget the ketchup. Uh, OK. What kind do we buy?

At which point mugger and victim wander off forgetting what and why they were even talking to each other.

And that, my friend, is the cancer. It is a social cancer. A cancer of yet another barrier of communication between people under the guise of connectivity.

What’s worse is I promise you the human brain was never ever meant to have 24/7/365 connectivity no matter what Verizon and AT&T say.

Not ever! It is mental illness to think so and even crazier to fall into this trap. I see people who have not learned they can turn off their TV and they do not have to answer any phone. Guess what? You can elect to answer calls later at YOUR convenience.

Failure to do so will inevitably result in T.H.U.D. and a global kind of ADD that will undoubtedly require Big Pharma to create yet another toxic drug that makes billions!

Where are the FDA and FTC when you need them!?

I am going to go out on a limb here and tell you that the stuff you are reading on exercise and longevity is only half true. So to begin we’ll briefly look at what is out there.

But before we do let me say this: I have come to terms with the fact that at this moment in my life I am a runner. I am now training for my second 125 km Canadian Death Race and most of what I do centers around long slow distance endurance training. The very kind of training I tell you NOT to focus on.

Let me explain.

I do not do this stuff for the “physical goodness” of it. I do it for the mental moving meditation, the ability to still do it while my body can still tolerate the abuse and yes, it is abusive.

And this year I am doing it for charity. My website theraceagainstdeath.org should be up in 4 to 6 weeks for those of you who want to get involved.

While I don’t think I am losing years of my life for doing this, I sure don’t expect to live any longer because of it. After all it is called the “Death Race” for a reason!

Now let’s look at what is printed in the lay and other exercise press. Run run run. Runners live longer, runners aren’t injured any more than non-runners — maybe actually less — and runners are healthier.

Now I haven’t examined this data all that closely but I suspect that the info comes from very long studies. Normally I would tell you that a 20 year study is very powerful. But if you keep only the people who are still running at the end of a twenty year period you have really selected out a ton of people and left only those genetically gifted for the sport who may indeed already have the genetics for longevity as well!.

And then there is the fact that most of these guys doing the research are distance runners and especially distance cyclists.

I would love to see some power guys get into research in the same fashion.

But you look at the other side of the fence and you’ll find some articles on longevity and power generation. Interestingly enough you’ll see an almost direct correlation of longevity to things like explosive or one-rep leg strength and grip strength as well.

Now if you combine the new information on higher intensity short distance training, including running, with the fact that this leads to power generation, you get two great benefits.

First is longevity.

Second is this kind of strength and power training will make you more accident proof.

And actually there is a third benefit! Fat loss since high intensity training done right is the best way to lose fat.

So from a guy who runs 80 mile races I am still telling you, “Do as I say, not as I do!”

Next year will be the 10th anniversary of the Canadian Death Race. I will be running it but this time in a relay. I plan on doing lots of power training and high intensity cycling for my cardio. By then it will be time to give these feet and legs a break.

One final observation for you athletes out there. You do not need to do only Olympic weight lifting for triple extension (which is one of the key movements to real power!).

Check out the 4th circuit on my Fabulous Fat Burning for Everyone DVD by JC Santana and Rhadi Fergusson. You’ll see real raw power as Rhadi prepares for the Judo nationals!

What is Pharmaceutical Grade Fish Oil?

The doctor’s reply: “Well it’s the only type I will use for myself, my patients and my fish oil customers but it depends on who you talk to. Critics of fish oil slammed the term as pure marketing hype. Ironically, if the oil is treated to the processing needed to make it as pure as possible, it removes most of the PCB’s, meets all FDA standards, has no detectable levels of lead or mercury and is consistently close to what is claimed on the label much like a drug. In short, if the FDA makes fish oil a drug, which is now much closer to reality as it is with all supplements, a real Pharmaceutical Grade fish oil would pass muster.”

What do you think of alternative sources of EPA and DHA like krill?

Woynarowski states, “I still use only fish oil supplements. There are over 10,000 independent (not manufacturer sponsored) studies on fish oil dating back decades and more come out every day practically. Krill lost credibility with me when some of the manufactures claimed it was “better than fish oil”. They were told to stop those ads, which they soon did because that is a very broad sweeping statement with no proof. Krill has only been studied by manufacturer studies to my knowledge. It is part of a sensitive ecosystem just like fish. And just like fish it is subject to extensive farming and pollutants as well, in this case OPC’s (organochlorine pesticides). I haven’t seen anyone testing krill. Just saying it’s clean doesn’t cut it with me. I do think the perfect solution to keeping our fish stocks well fed with Omega 3’s in their food chain is to use the krill added to standard fish meal to feed the farmed fish. That would solve a lot of sustainability issues but krill is rather expensive for the amounts of Omega 3 you get. And fish can convert other fatty acids to Omega 3 in a fashion human beings can’t so the sustainability issues can be solved with a little work and conscientious behavior. By the way, no human population ever lived on krill so there will never be any population based studies!”

Finally, he added, “For the first time in history a supplement has been so robust and scientifically grounded that even traditional medical doctors are using it extensively. I think the future is very bright for fish oil and it remains the gold standard of Omega 3’s for scientific studies and human supplementation for the foreseeable future.

It’s a question of hard science and hard marketing. The science of Vitamin D was truly “lost” for a long time. Vitamin D is actually a steroid hormone and as such is involved in so many critical issues of human health including: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, auto immune diseases like lupus, M.S., depression and thyroid illness to name a few!

The role of Vitamin D in these illnesses has become apparent as the levels of Vitamin D that seem to improve and in some cases “cure those maladies” is found to be way higher than most people currently have in their blood stream.

To many times it appears as if we are in the midst of a “Low Vitamin D” epidemic.

As far as the marketing goes, the internet rules these days and careers are made and broken on whether or not people are looking at you and Vitamin D is certainly “the hot topic”. Someone will no doubt become famous or more famous using it as a stepping stone into the public consciousness.

The reason that we are such low levels of vitamin D is a combination of medical ignorance, lifestyle and environment. The levels of Vitamin D needed to improve disease is far above the levels needed to prevent Ricketts (which is where the “normal” levels come from) so for a long time lots of doctors told lots of people they had “normal” Vitamin D levels even though they were well below the levels we now recommend to give us the best chance at health. Such teachings were not only impractical but wrong.

The amount of sunlight needed to generate enough Vitamin D to give you the kind of higher levels we are talking about these days is several hours a day and unless you belong to a nudist colony you are not getting that much from the sun. In addition that level of UV radiation poses a serious risk of skin cancer to at least some of us!

To determine you level of vitamin D, ask your doctor for “25 hydroxy Vitamin D level, that diagnoses a D deficiency in blood. If the answer comes back 1-25 level and there is no mention of the 25 level, your doctor needs to go back to the books.

The classic 1-25 hydroxy Vitamin D level that was taught in medical school for so long is a poor test because it represents a short lived type of Vitamin D and not the “total Vitamin D” in the body. Also the parathyroid gland tries to make up for low D levels by increasing the conversion of 25 to 1-25 Vitamin D, which leads to a “false normal” 1-25 level. This level is going up but the real usable source of Vitamin D in your body is dropping.

If I supplement with Vitamin D, how much should I take? That varies but most docs recommend between 2,000 and 5,000 IU on a pretty much daily basis. No matter what, you should have your 25-hydroxy Vitamin D levels checked along with your calcium if you are supplementing because Vitamin D is toxic if you get too much.

Personally, in all my years of practice, I have not seen a single case of Vitamin D toxicity even in people on big doses.

What about foods and vitamins that contain Vitamin D? Most foods have D levels in the low 100’s, even foods that are supposedly rich in D. Example: Salmon has 350 IU fortified mil 100 IU and most people need thousands of units even if they get some sun.

Are there “special risk” populations that should really have their D levels checked and monitored? As an anti-aging doc I think everyone should. But there are some medications that can lower D levels and anyone with a history of prostate, breast, or colon cancer, diabetes, heart disease or high blood pressure (to name the most common illnesses in our society) should be checked. Also since the conversion of Vitamin D goes down with age, older people need to be checked and because vitamin D comes from cholesterol, anyone who has aggressive lipid lowering therapy with a statin drug should be followed.

Finally, anyone who has had gastric bypass is at risk for low D levels.
*None of my lists are meant to be exhaustive, they are meant to show you how central to your health Vitamin D is.

That’s it for now and I hope you will help enlighten your friendly neighborhood medical professional on this topic!

The Congress has passed some historic health legislation into being. Whether it works or not depends

The Congress has passed some historic health legislation into being. Whether it works or not depends on how much it actually costs. For starters let me tell you why Pharmaceutical Grade fish oil is essential for America.

1 – Fish oil supplements do what no prescription drug can ever do.

2 – Fish oil capsules are all natural and comparatively almost side effects free even in big does.

3 – Dr Dave Omega-3 fish oil reduces death and infirmity from several major causes of aging and death in this country including heart disease, cancer, arthritis, dementias, mood disorders, allergic disorder autoimmune disorders.

4 – Pharmaceutical grade fish oil even in doses as high as 18 grams in cancer patients, improved survival and was very well tolerated.

5 – Other fish oil benefits may make people smarter and give them better memories even if they are not having problems in those areas.

6 – Fish oil capsules help the stress response.

7 – Fish oil capsules help keep the biologic time clocks, the telomeres, longer in sick people and most likely in regular people as well.

8 – Fish oil aquaculture is already on the way to solving the renewable resource issue. My suggestion: grind up krill and add it to the fish meal.

9 – Fish oil can be purified to parts per trillion.

10 – Benefits of fish oil is that fish oil is the single most studied, most effective supplement ever and has been even shown to decrease body fat, improve lipids and insulin responses.

If I were to give an 11th element it would be that we are as a nation severely deficient in it and fixing that problem alone would probably save several million lives, reduce crime, depression, increase productivity and put us more firmly on the road to economic recovery and liberty and justice for all.

Back in late March, when I had the luxury of writing about sneakers and strength training, I was doing very well with my training indeed!

I had gotten to marathon distance on the trails and was on a perfect schedule.

But like every April before this one, this April became my nemesis.

To recap, in April of 2008, I was put out of action for 4 weeks with rip-roaring bilateral Achilles and bilabials anterior tendonitis.

In other words both the front and back of my lower legs were -unctional.

Bad biomechanics!

I got past that just in time to run and finish 2008’s Canadian Death Race as you see on the pictures here on the site of me crossing the line just over 24 hours after the start.

Last April I got either Pertussis or swine flu, no one is sure but I had respiratory problems for months past the race. Race day 2009 was a disaster, which I won’t recap but suffice it to say I had no business being there and had to quit at 30 miles.

OK, now in 2010 I’m doing great, right!?

Well I instructed at Greta Blackburn’s Fitcamp in Cancun in late April.

Greta, for those of you who don’t know, is the originator of the Fitness Boot Camp concept and has been doing them for 25+ years — long before most of the current crop of instructors were even out of grade school!

This one was special and you can read about it at Fitcamp.com but the theme was anti-aging and fitness and we had top people there including yours truly, Dr Joe Mercola, Phil Campbell the godfather of modern sprint and interval training, Bill Andrews discoverer of the human telomerase (longevity gene) and Marjorie Brook AIS guru to name just some of the presenters.

Greta is also one of my co-authors of our upcoming book, “The Immortality Edge” due out in January 2011, published by Wiley and Sons.

Anyway, I did what I always do, led a pack of fit younger people on some very cool but tough “fun runs”. Only 3 miles but chock full of sprints, band work, body weight exercises; these are monster workouts and everyone loves them including me!

But it had been a while since I had done this much speed work in such a short period of time.

Superimposed on top of my distance training it led to a devastating injury in the last 10 yards of the last sprint on the last day of the camp.

It felt like I actually slipped on something with my right foot and it seemed like the right leg went far out behind me.

The ensuing pop, pop, pop in both groins and below my belly button and the immediate seizing up of my movement told me immediately I had done some serious damage.

The words are “sports hernia” but it’s not a hernia at all. As a matter of fact, it has nothing to do with the inguinal canal or the gut like a real hernia does.

My MRI said it best: torn adductors from the right hip to the pubic bone, torn rectus abdominis off the symphysis pubis (the top of the pubic bone) and more of the same on the left side.

Grade 1 is the simple groin pull.

Grade 2, which I had, is fluid inflammation and partial tears: minimum 4 weeks to heal and often months.

Grade 3 is a complete tear and surgery is usually required.

I did see a surgeon but no one in my area was interested in even coming close to operating on this as much due to their own inexperience with the problems as the actual protocol for taking care of it.

I very quickly became aware of the absolute lack of information and consistency of what was available. Everyone had different opinions on how long it would take to get better and how to treat it. I can never pick anything simple!

So I rested, hit the Airdyne, stretched and strengthened.

Long story short, I did a 40 mile run in late June and had a great CDR prep camp last week.

So in spite of my nasty injury and some residual pain I am off to Grande Cache in 2 weeks to run my third Canadian Death Race.

Wish me luck!!

P.S. Greta will be hosting another monster fitness and longevity event in November at her home base in Malibu California and again in Cancun at the beautiful Ceiba del Mar on the Mayan Riviera. I plan on being at both of them so come see us and let us teach you how not to get hurt, how to live long and healthy and to be in top shape! Fitcamp.com

Dr. Dave Woynarowski MD, is a nationally renowned fish oil expert who has been studying and using fish oil himself and in his practice for over a decade.

He commented on the current status of fish oil with regards to purity and Proposition 65 in response to several questions that have come up as a result of the Prop 65 lawsuit filed by a private consumer environmental group.

What do you think of the Proposition 65 lawsuit and how will it affect the industry and the research into fish oil’s benefits?

Dr Dave responded, “It’s unfortunate but some of the best known manufacturers got dinged. In all cases I think each of them met the FDA standards but the Proposition 65 standards are 4x lower and that makes it more work for the company to meet those standards.

Why would there be two standards concerning PCB’s (polychlorinated bipenyls)? Well anyone can make up a standard and try to use it to force purity but in the case of PCB’s the dose makes the poison. The liver can handle low levels of these chemicals derived from plastics but at higher levels they are presumed (no direct link has yet been found) carcinogenic. Once you start talking about cancer it’s easy to see why people get upset. While I am all for the absolute purest products, this is not like death or pregnancy where you have no leeway. It is virtually impossible to remove all PCB’s from any product but we can do it well below the Proposition 65 standards if we want.”

Why do you think the 10 companies named in the suit were singled out (these include Solgar, GNC, and Twin labs)?

Woynarowski said, “Probably because they are the biggest brand, most well know and best selling, but also because they use the same source. If you took the oil and matched it to the manufacture date I would be surprised if it didn’t all test out the same, meaning that they are selling the same product. I do not know the source but I do know that we have been approached by Chinese companies claiming perfect purity. The track record of these sources is less than perfect and maybe these companies succumbed to a lower price point and higher profit margin but who knows!”

Woynarowski states, “I still use only fish oil.

The Women’s Health Initiative is a huge long-running study that has contributed a lot of useful information to the world of medicine and prevention.

Over 15,000 women were analyzed after taking Vitamin D and Calcium supplements.

A modest reduction in hip fracture was seen, suggesting that this routine has some benefit in preventing osteoporosis or softening of the bones that happens with aging and hormone deficiency. Osteoporosis remains one of the major causes of death, disability and comes at a huge cost to the health care system.

The study also looked at colon cancer and found no benefit to Vitamin D in preventing colon cancer at all.

These findings represent the results of one of the first large scale trials of Vitamin D and Calcium for the prevention of bone loss and cancer.

Dr Dave comments:

1) The study used 400IU of D3 and 1 gram of the Calcium carbonate, the worst choice for calcium supplementation.

We have seen this before. If you want to prove something does not work, make sure you use inadequate doses, the wrong supplement and use it for a time frame that may not show benefit.

2) The study does reflect the behavior of women at large, however, since many women do take this level of D in a multi and have trouble taking more pills or higher doses. But this does not mean the supplements don’t work

3) The colon cancer controversy is interesting and this was a big study but once again I think the dosages of D need to be in the 2000 to 5000 IU range to show benefit. Everyone is concerned about D toxicity but I think this is also much ado about nothing since it is extremely rare and D deficiency is far more common.

4) Also lacking in the study were actual measured levels of D in the bloodstream. This would have been expensive but much more useful in terms of determining the right level of D and the same for calcium. At least pick a supplement that is well absorbed.

5) Notice no one said anything about Vitamin A causing cancer in this huge study either!!!!

Overall I find the study to be of limited value because it tells us what we already know. If you use low doses of the wrong supplements you will not get much return!

Artwalk

I love this event, and over the years it has truly grown to become a local’s favorite. Friday July 09th starting at 6pm, Marketplace Whistler began to buzz – within 15 minutes the area was well over 100 strong and the music, food, cocktails and artists were all rhythmically celebrating their long-awaited local artist appreciation night… the opening of Artwalk.

Whistler TV shooting

Mingling together with the tourists, our community of locals was out showing all our artists and artisans how much they are appreciated in Whistler… Did I mention talented as well? The works of so many new artist in the corridor are emerging and some of them we’ve rubbed shoulders with for years – take Susie Cipolla and Matt Walker – out of the blue talent arrives… or was it always deep down within their souls.. Alison Hodson’s art, on display at Pasta Lupino, was tempting you to touch with 3-D mixed media. Thankfully helpful signs reminded you to keep your hands off.

Did we have enough talent?

From Lions Bay to Lillooet our Sea to Sky corridor is loaded with talent and not just artistic, but musicians too – Stone Soup Marimba – Dr. Dave – Brother Twang. This party went from Marketplace to Function Junction where they took it to the streets with food vendors, live art, street hockey and music…. It was a gorgeous evening of 25 degrees celsius and plenty of water and refreshments at most venues. We served up cheese plates and veggies, fresh fruit, dips, crackers and Pellegrino with lemon twists… I smiled all evening as friends just poured in the door one after another… It was fabulous!

Live Artists

One artist I have loved for years is Joan Baron who is inspired to paint through a family of artists. Joan’s incredible work of transcended realism with vibrant blended colors can be viewed at Mountain Galleries in the luxurious Fairmont Chateau Whistler… Joan is an absolute pleasure… don’t miss her work!

by Joan Baron

Another amazingly talented woman in Whistler is Leanna RathKelly who’s paintings and photography are inspired by her philosophy in life… Leanna is truly a beautiful person…

“My inspirations are real people and real light: I photograph life, and my goal is to invoke an identifiable emotion in all my images. I shoot the way I like to live – with joy, happiness and awareness. I have the same philosophy of photography as I do in my life – show the beauty of living, be nice to people, and enjoy the ride.”

Leanna Rathkelly

I chatted with Vincent and Cheryl Massey two long time locals and good friends who have their own gallery behind their home in Alpine Meadows… Vincent a potter and Cheryl a basket weaver… Vincent’s works of pottery can be found throughout Whistler in local shops and classy restaurants… A real fun couple that are involved with USANA Health and Wealness – Whistler Search and Rescue…

Chili Thom had two venues Sushi Village and his own gallery in Function Junction . Our very own local charm Ali Milner was set up singing her beautiful music with Van Gruen at The Lift Coffee Co.

44 host galleries this year and 52 regional artists and artisans… too many to see in one night, especially when the after party starts at 9pm in the Westin Hotel at the Firerock Lounge. No worries this incredible event of 7 years goes on until August 31… so be sure to pick up a brochure or go on-line to The Whistler Arts Council.

Please help support our local artists and adorn your home here or where ever home may be with a little piece of Whistler… Most of these artist donate constantly to our local fund-raisers year round and never ask for anything in return…. I know they would appreciate your business and I also believe they certainly deserve it.

Lastly I’d like to say that the team at The Whistler Arts Council do an amazing job, they are passionate, outgoing and always smiling… Thank you for helping make Whistler such a vibrant strong community – because we are so much more when we all work together.

Cheers!

Remember back in January when Sledpress sent me a fabulous birthday care package full of wonderful things to help make me feel better? Well, she’s gone and done it again, except this time even more so … and it isn’t even my birthday!

I’d just spent most of yesterday morning (after getting home from yoga class) dealing with landlord Pepe and the 100-year-old carpenter he’d brought over to “fix the doors and windows that don’t close properly”. Which are, well, all of them. And I felt so sorry for the old carpenter, who told me that if he’d known the state of things beforehand he’d never have accepted the job – he could see that all the doors and windows in the building were beyond repair and he didn’t like doing work that was “futile”. Anyhow, he managed to get the livingroom balcony doors so that they won’t fly open with every gust of wind, but there are still huge gaps that he said are impossible to repair because the doors are totally warped. He’s coming back on Thursday to tackle the rest of the doors. And in the middle of all this the postman rang up and said he had a package for me…

Check it out. A whole whack of serious Dr Dave supplements. Including “Sleep Wizard” (when I saw that one I almost burst into tears). And the foot roller! To say I was overwhelmed would be understatement. And following on the heels of this post on sleeping where I talked about getting back on the low-carb/low-cal wagon after sorting out my sleeping issues … well, this amazing gift has actually pushed me to get on it anyhow. I mean, if my wonderful friend Sled cares so much to send me all this stuff then, you know, at least I can do my part!

I had already been planning to get back on the low-carb thing this week and seriously try out Dr Eades 30-day Solution Low Carb (I’ve had this book for ages, which was recommended by Gaelen) and now I am feeling quite motivated at last.

Thanks Sled. For this and also for our (almost) daily email chats. Means a lot to me.

you’re taking up too much space!’ (Unknown).

My take-away from the excellent presentation by Dr Dave (Richards, of Bournemouth University) who spoke at the South Coast Connections networking event earlier in the week.

He was speaking on innovation, defining the innovative as that which adds new value – though he was careful to emphasise that value should not be understood solely in monetary terms.

He also highlighted the importance of conviviality: an idea not shared is probably an idea that will not be developed to its full potential. Brainstorm constantly, share, be joyful, but be ruthless in throwing out good ideas as soon as possible within the development process in order to concentrate your resources on the great ideas.

His presentation was thought-provoking and entertaining, but the visuals occasionally a bit tired. For example, a dominatrix to illustrate discipline. That idea’s been round the houses and then some.

Except, of course that’ll probably be the one thing everyone will remember. I can just see us all, a month or so from now, waking with the insistent idea in our heads that ‘we need discipline‘ but not being entirely sure why.

The next morning I was out early, walking through the woods with the dog, the crunch of a light frost underfoot and Joni Mitchell in the earphones as the sun rose in a red sky; a fleeting moment of perfection.

But let’s not talk about fare-thee-well’s now
The night is a starry dome.
And they’re playin’ that scratchy rock and roll
Beneath the Matala moon…

Today the postman brought a surprise – a beautifully produced hardback book of samples of Colorplan, paper and card by GF Smith.

It is ideal for filing on the shelf, so it is always to hand, ready to be consulted. And, as it happens, I use Colorplan for the cover of our poetry magazine (Tears in the Fence, issue 51 just out). BUT, and it’s a big but, there is no key or other text to identify the colours. So having chosen a paper colour, how do I communicate this to the printer?

Live on the edge, but don’t step into the void.

Today’s post I would like to give credit to three docs. The well-known Dr Oz who inspired part of the title of this blog. On a Larry King special in January with key people from Oprah’s closest circle of advisers, Dr Oz said words to the effect of, “It’s about the rest of your life” whether you lose weight or not, referring to the importance of getting the body, mind and soul acting in harmony. The line has stayed with me throughout the months as I put into practice the many strategies I will share here. Dr Oz always delivers health information in a way that gets through to me.

The next doc, Dr Dave, is relatively new to me, but just as helpful. His tell-it-like-it-is style delivered with genuine concern makes a lot of sense to me. I subscribe to his tips newsletter and find myself satisfied that I am doing much of what he recommends or inspired and nudged to make subtle changes here and there. You can search his archives for many worthwhile articles. Like me, he recommends the use of increased protein, through good quality sources. It’s not all about meat. For me, the thing I’ve learnt about the low carb way is that it is not no carb. Quality carbohydrates also known as “complex carbohydrates” basically covers most vegetables, many fruits and fibrous grains. These are things we know we’re supposed to eat more of. Limiting all the other types of carbs and eating up to six small meals throughout the day has worked wonders for me as I have lost, since January 2009, 24 pounds (11 kg).

And finally, but by no means least, Dr Deepak Chopra. Nourish the soul and you nourish the body. Lots of amazing messages can be found here.
