Se lo chiedete a Barney Stinson – uno che è 10mila volte più awesome di me – vi dirà che è la storia di un tipo estremamente awesome che fa crescere quel babbeo che dice ceropeduncoli. Il tipo in questione è Bryan Brown che siccome che è successo che io non sono una ragazza che è stata innamorata di Tom Cruise alle medie io non nmi ricordo per Cocktail, ma per FX: Effetto Mortale. Che era una mega bomba. E sapete perché? Perché il protagonista faceva un lavoro bellissimo… A leggere la scheda di questa dodicesima collaborazione Latverians/dISPENSER – guess who? – Costantino della… wait for it… Gherardesca. Che dopo questa performance pare sia stata chiamato per girare la versione italiana del Dr. Horrible Sing A Long Blog.

QUENTIN BECK A.K.A. MYSTERIO

Quentin Beck fa un lavoro bellissimo: realizza effetti speciali per i film di Hollywood. Non solo: è anche un bravissimo illusionista, un valido ipnotista e un discreto armadio, uno di quelli che non si tira indietro di fronte al pericolo. Sfortunatamente, dal punto di vista lavorativo, sono in pochi quelli che credono in lui, e Quentin Beck, anche se molto giovane, entra in una profonda crisi creativa. Lascia quindi il suo posto, ma un uomo con un curriculum del genere non può starsene a lungo con le mani in mano. Decide di dedicarsi al crimine a tempo pieno, con il nome di Mysterio. Pur non possedendo nessun potere vero e proprio, Mysterio riesce in poco tempo – con dei colpi fantasiosi ed estremamente ben congeniati – a farsi un nome nell’ambiente. Sarà anche per il suo costume particolarmente azzeccato – una tutina aderente verde con un bel mantello blu e una specie di boccia per i pesci sulla testa – ma il suo successo nel settore è tale che viene chiamato a fare parte dei Sinistri Sei, una team scelto di supercriminali. Dopo l’entusiasmo inziale però, i suoi ben più perfidi “colleghi” perdono fiducia in lui e da lì a poco cominciano addirittura a deriderlo. Il suo acerrimo nemico, l’Uomo Ragno, lo consegna alle forze dell’ordine un numero imprecisato di volte e il nostro comincia ad apparire a tutti come un triste cattivo di serie B. Ormai vecchio, dopo l’ennesimo soggiorno dietro le sbarre, scopre di essere malato terminale di cancro. Decide di andarsene in maniera spettacolare e comincia a progetta di uccidere la sua nemesi. Ironia della sorte, l’Uomo Ragno non si trova più e Quentin si vede costretto a cambiare l’oggetto del suo odio. Ripega su Devil ed escogita un piano che definire folle è riduttivo. Fallito anche questo suo ultimo colpo di coda, Quentin Beck decide di farla finita. Per sua stessa ammissione, incapace di un solo gesto originale, copia anche il modo di sucidarsi: decide di sparars in testa come Kraven Il Cacciatore.

Are you guys sick of all of that Emo bull crap yet?  If you’re not, you must be emo, and you need to get that fingernail polish off of your nails, wipe off that black eyeliner, and let your hair grow out to its natural color, because you are not nonconformist as can be, and while you call it freedom of expression, I’ll just call you a fag.

I know that entire song by heart, by the way.  I just thought you should know.

Collectively, and to all of those emo kids out there, I want to tell you:  Suck it up, the reason people don’t care about you is because you’re not a person anymore.  People might be more willing to help you if you weren’t just the product of the emo cookie cutter, made to be an exact replica of every other emo kid out there.  Get your head out of your ass, and stop wasting money on Hot Topic’s outrageous prices– you’re all collectively killing me to death.

Speaking of Hot Topic, I hate how they claim to be all about music.  They are not about music, they’re about whatever it is that emo kids like at that exact second.  Hot Topic is a whore for your money, and they’re forever willing to lie to you and to tell you that they like everything you like just to get in your pants… to get your wallet.

Seriously, emo kids, if you want to be individuals why don’t you crawl out of the process line and find yourself some taste, or style, or something.  Please, this is me asking you all, collectively, as a favor.

What in your life went so horribly wrong that now you want to be just like everyone else that’s trying to stand out, and now blend in with every crowd under 19 years of age?

I struggled a bit this week because there were a lot of reruns.  Where was the sitcom-y goodness of shows like How I Met Your Mother? Or the sparkly magic of Glee?  And while I found myself laughing during Always Sunny, “The Gang Wrestles for the Troops” was not up to par. So although this is late, here are Oct. 25-31’s best lines…

1. My girlfriend, on a scale of 1 to Gisele, uh a 9. (The Office)

Ed Helms has been the highlight of The Office this season. And after seeing the Subtle Sexuality video, I’m so excited to see an Erin/Nard Dog romance.

2. Chex mix, pretzels, baby carrots—predictable but appetizing! (Community)

To really appreciate this line you need to hear it in Abed’s priceless Batman voice.  So here you go:

3. Hey slutty teenaged girls dressed as sexy kittens, pump your own stomachs this year! (Parks and Recreation)

I’m so happy that Parks and Recreation has hit its stride! As much as I love, love, love Amy Poehler,  I could not get into last season. As an aside, if I could invite one celebrity couple over for dinner, it would have to be Amy Poehler and Will Arnet. And with Parks and Recreation’s great reviews this season, there wouldn’t be that whole awkward elephant in the room thing, “Wow, you two are hysterical, why can’t you find a good vehicle on TV?” I’m not a Sit Down, Shut Up fan, and I don’t even want to talk about the cancellation of the great but under appreciated Arrested Development.  At least Hulu gives it the recognition it deserves. Any way, go Poehler and Rashida Jones!

4. Read my face. (30 Rock)

Not really funny unless you read his face.  But the question remains, whose face was better, Sacha’s or Jenna’s?

5. The poncho by itself is fine. The poncho plus the flute plus the stupid dance? My son will die a virgin. (Modern Family)

So unexpected both from Gloria and this episode in general. This line was great, but one line does not an episode make. Let’s hope for more next week.

6. Excuse me, Mr. Donaghy, I’m not sure if you’re participating in this year’s pumpkin carving contest or if like last year, I should go jump up my own ass. (30 Rock)

If I had carved a pumpkin this year, it would have looked like Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible. Well, I would have tried to make it look like this photo. I’d  probably have ended up with stitches instead, but it’s my blog, I can pretend.

7. Then I can mark you down to definitely being there from 7 sharp to Spanish upside-down question mark? (Community)

I love seeing Alison Brie’s desperate performance as Annie on Community. She shown flints of humor as Pete Campbell’s desperate wife on Mad Men, but here it’s much more appropriate to laugh.

8. So Rufus asked my size this morning, does this mean I’m getting a flannel? (Gossip  Girl)

OMG. I died. Gossip Girl writers note: The more screen time Eric gets, the better.

9. You really think your life is like a romantic comedy, don’t you? (Greek)

Casey totally thinks her life is like a romantic comedy. But then again, at one point or another what girl hasn’t sang into a hair brush while dorkily dancing around her room? And, had this been a romantic comedy, the song playing would have been KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See.” Apparently this ubiquitous girl power anthem was even considered for Hillary Clinton’s campaign song. Or so says Wikipedia.

10. I love that picture of you. It’s so flattering. And who could resist free gifts in shiny wrappers? (Gossip Girl)

Even though Dan’s awkward mumbling is way less believable now that he has become quite the lady’s man (c’mon GG, I’m not a Dan fan but stop calling him Lonely Boy), I still couldn’t help but laugh.

Fan fiction has been around almost as long as there’s been fiction at all. People who don’t necessarily have their own original characters or settings try to build their own stories with someone else’s properties. Most of the time, fans are stuck with self-insert stories that simply play into the desires of the writer or maybe just empty, boring tales where the characters are so far from their canonical personalities that you wonder why the author didn’t just create their own. But every so often, you end up with some real gems that don’t just rip off the canon, but take it and make something wildly different, fun and truly respectful of the original. That’s the case with Horrible Turn, a Dr. Horrible prequel made by some die-hard fans and scheduled to be released November 10th, 2009.

Not only was it clearly made with love for the source material, but was endorsed and called ‘cool’ over on Dr Horrible’s OFFICIAL Twitter With that kind of press, it can’t fail! For excited viewers, Horrible Turn is an hour-long musical that, along with that Horrible interruption at this year’s Emmys, might help tide fans over until the promised Dr. Horrible sequel finally comes to fruition. And how’s that going, anyway?

The answer is in an article recently posted over at TV Over Mind, where Nathan Fillion (Captain Hammer) was quoted as saying:

“There are plans. The media for the sequel has not yet been decided, but there is a title.” Naturally Fillion wasn’t about to reveal that title, but he did also confirm that along with the writing of the script, at least a song or two had also been written.

“Joss, I was talking to him right before we won the Emmy,” said Fillion. “He said that he’s finished writing a song or two. He told me a couple of verses to the song.”

There’s still no date set for the production of the sequel, but I personally can’t wait to see it. I’ve still got the original and its soundtrack on my iPod and still loving it.

* And speaking of the Kennedy assassination: how great was last night’s Mad Men? Knowing they would eventually have to do an assassination episode, I worried they wouldn’t find the right approach—but I think they pretty much nailed it. I like too that it came an episode early; like most people I was thinking it would be next week. Pandagon and Ta-Nehisi Coates have their usual Mad Men posts up, if you’re interested; I usually read the Television without Pity forums too.

This post shall attempt to make up for CBS not broadcasting a new episode of How I Met Your Mother tonight. I was so bummed out today when I realized that American TV shows don’t air the same way Asian dramas do.

I love musicals.

I mean, singing, dancing, people dropping what they’re doing to join in on the big numbers – what’s not to like?

Well, my good friend Monster knows this, and so she’s been insisting for months that I must watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.

Neil Patrick Harris plays Dr. Horrible the villain/hero.

Written by Joss Whedon and his brothers, the musical web short stars Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, Felicia Day as his love interest Penny, and Nathan Fillion (SQUEE!!) as his arch-nemesis Captain Hammer.

Having seen and been unimpressed by Whedon’s famous musical episode of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” ”Once More with Feeling” (I get that the idea was genius, but the execution and the music were awful), I wasn’t 100% sold on the greatness of Dr. Horrible. But because of the ossomness of Harris and, of course, The Fillion, I had to click the link that Monster so conveniently posted to my Facebook wall.

Needless to say, my expectations were more than met. The story was cute, the writing was hilarious, and the acting and singing were all superb. Harris really carried the day with his nuanced Dr. Horrible, but The Fillion certainly contributed with his perfectly smarmy Captain Hammer. Felicia Day made for a sweet Penny, too, but I was just absolutely blown away by the other two.

I was especially surprised by the catchiness of the tunes and complexity of the parts. There were several really skillfully written duets in there. I found myself humming the tunes the next day and wishing that my sister would watch and learn the songs or that Monster would learn to sing so that I would have someone with whom to sing the duets (in private, Monster. I promise).

And Whedon’s story was satisfyingly unique. A superhero spoof that makes the villain the protagonist? I’d expect nothing less from Whedon. A villainous protagonist who struggles with the tension between his attraction to a pretty do-gooder and desire to be recognized as the evil genius that he is? Classic Whedon yet again.

But the ending really threw me for a loop. For a web short that had me laughing, it sure left me with a knot at the pit of my stomach in the end. But I can respect Whedon for that – he never gives you just what you expect. Maybe I didn’t like the way it ended, but it certainly was intriguing.

And, in my opinion, a sequel wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Lord knows there have been sequels to crappier movies.

By the way, if anybody ever hears of a community theater trying to put on a stage version of this show, please alert me immediately. I so want in on that.

Geeks and Gleeks, prick up your ears: before this 2009/2010 season ends TV mastermind, and personal hero, Joss Whedon will lay his genius on phenom frosh series Glee. Whedonites, be not afraid, this does not mean he’s jumping his current ship Dollhouse (even though there are rumblings of said ship to be on the verge of sinking) he will merely be moonlighting as director for one episode of his fellow FOX show.

Those in the know, including Glee helmer Ryan Murphy, have already seen the Buffy creator exquisitely execute a musical slant to the Slayer series’ with its season six (“All singing! All talking!”) episode “Once More With Feeling,” which he directed and wrote both music and lyrics. Murphy gushed, “Joss directed one of the great musical episodes in the history of television on Buffy, so this is a great, if unexpected, fit. I’m thrilled he’ll be loaning us his fantastic groundbreaking talent.” Most recently, the benevolent Whedon bestowed upon the world the online musical sensation Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, which garnered him a win this year in the Emmy’s newest category, Short-Form Live-Action Entertainment Program.

Joss is also no stranger to guest-directing hit shows. He ably helmed The Office episode “Business School” in its third season and says the man himself, “A television director’s job is, on some level, to be anonymous; to find the most compelling way to present a story without calling attention to himself. I had a wonderful time doing just that on The Office, and hope to again. A guest director can bring a huge amount to the party (we’ve had CRAZY talent on Dollhouse), but the party isn’t his. I just want to work with good people on a show that I like enough to have watched every episode several times.”

In other Glee guest talent news, lead Lea Michele will soon be reunited with her “Spring Awakening” co-star Jonathan Groff. The Broadway star will reportedly be on the show for about five or six episodes as the lead male singer of rival show choir Vocal Adrenaline, the group seen in the pilot episode performing “Rehab,” and will serve as a potential love interest for Michele’s glee club queen Rachel Berry. Creator Murphy describes the character as, “A male diva…a miva.”

Murphy also revealed that the cast of Glee will be going on tour next summer, not surprising given that the series’ music has exploded on iTunes with a full soundtrack set to drop November 3rd (full track listing).

All right, basically, Glee is the runaway hit of this season. If you haven’t seen it, you have probably heard of it, or seen its songs climbing the charts on itunes. Well, not only did Fox pick it up for the rest of the year, now Joss Whedon is on board to direct! Most famous for his role in the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, any confusion at his interest in Glee can be assuaged with merely saying “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog.”

As I will often say, his writing in the brilliant, and under-watched Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, has obviously made its mark. So, my faith is and excitement in this brilliant happenstance couldn’t be greater!

Last night, I had a bit of a mental lapse. I recorded NCIS:LA (at 9PM on CBS) on the DVR when I meant to record NCIS (at 8PM on CBS). Of course, this is an easily solvable issue. I simply had to locate a torrent/upload of the episode of NCIS that I missed and I could view it on my computer. Problem solved. Yet, I was still really upset I’d screwed up the DVR recording.

I really hate watching TV online. I’m thankful it’s available, especially when I have DVR goof ups like this. But I really do prefer viewing TV on my TV. Call me old fashioned.

That having been said, the first time I viewed Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog was this past summer on DVD at my friend Shan’s house. Shan likes to make me watch TV, and I like to let her since she’d introduced me to a lot of my favorite tv shows. So, when she made me watch Dr. Horrible, I knew I’d love it. And I did.

But– and look at how amusing/ironic/obvious this next bit is– I definitely prefer my latest online viewing of Dr. Horrible to my initial DVD viewing. Just like I love my TV on the TV. I apparently love my Blog shows on the internet. I think the internet viewing of the show (let’s all thank God for Hulu) added an air of authenticity to the “Sing-Along Blog” that my initial DVD viewing lacked. The moments when Dr. Horrible speaks to his blog viewers really make is seem as if he’s speaking to each viewer individually (which, come on now, who doesn’t want Neil Patrick Harris speaking/singing to them individually?!). That combined with the fact that the show/movie is titled a “sing-along”, makes this narrative undeniably interactive at it’s core.

Combine the interactive nature of the narrative with the idea that the hero’s no real hero (hello narcissistic/douchey Captain Hammer in your black clothing– a classic symbol of evil) and the viewer is constantly rooting for the supposed villain (where Captain Hammer proves himself unworthy, the white clad Dr. Horrible is insecure and endearing). Joss Whedon couldn’t have embraced the essence of the contemporary narrative anymore then he did here.

  When I first started watching Castle last spring I admit I was skeptacle of it’s quirky off-kilter way of looking at crimes and murders.  Quirky cops shows hardly ever last, no matter how good they are.  Remember Life with Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers) or The Unusuals with Amber Tamblyn (Joan of Arcadia) & Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker)?  My point exactly.  Two great shows that skewed a little left of normal that were cut down before they even reached their prime.  Now do you understand my trepidation?  I thought you would.  I mean so what if Nathan Fillion has made a name for himself being in everything from One Life To Live to Firefly to Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog.  Did it really matter that he had already made a name for himself among the fangeeks with Firefly, Buffy, and Serenity?  Yeah I didn’t believe it would matter either, but I could not deny that it was a really good show.  Funny, heart warming, light, and puzzling (in a good way).  And frankly I honestly believe that if they had cast anyone but Nathan in the role of Richard Castle they would have run the risk of Castle coming off as swarmy and egotisical, instead of the charming guy we have come to know and love. 

Of course like every good show there is a possibitly of romance between the two main characters Castle and the lovely, but tough Kate Beckett played to perfection by Stana Katic (Quantum of Solace).  Luckily the writers seem to be enjoying themselves playing up the flirtation and friendship side of their relationship than any romance.  Which I must admit I am pleased about and I hope they don’t have a romantic relationship, not because they don’t have chemistry, they do, but because too often a show is ruined when the leads get together and I would like to see a male/female relationship that is strong and close without being romantic. 

  One of the more pleasing and different aspects to this show is that instead of shying away from personal and family lives this show puts a spot light on it.  But not in an over bearing way.   Come on who among us wouldn’t love to come home and find Susan Sullivan (Dharma and Greg) drinking wine and waxing poetic about being an actress?  I have to send major points out to Molly C. Quinn (The Christmas Carol) for holding her own in every scene she has with some major players.  Now they could over whelm us with Castle’s family life, but they are keen to keep it level with the on-going mystery of the day.  And it is nice to see that a guy who is so often cocky in every aspect of his life is at a complete loss at home.

  If I had to make a suggestion for the show’s writers it would only be that I would like to see more of Seamus Dever (Army Wives, GH) as Detective Kevin Ryan and Jon Huartas (Generation Kill) as Detective Javier Esposito.  Right now it seems as they are used more as side kicks and I can see their potential for so much more.  But other than that I can’t see much worng with the show and I look forward to next Monday.  On a side note I am so going to buy Heat Wave and being an avid reader I too will probably read it while relaxing in a bubble bath with a drink to sip on.

Okay so I am avoiding work I shouldn’t be avoiding because i actually have less time to do it than i thought. And i’m not sure if i have more homework to do (because i never write down my homework on Fridays. not sure why). It is actually ridiculous because I had a day off today. A whole day. I spent it watching True Blood (which is ridiculous. therefore i kinda like it) and acting paranoid and making tea as usual (people in my head? trying to explain what a camera is. Have decided just to say it is magic and be done with it).

Ooh you know what else I watched? Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. I know I am a year behind everyone else in this (I have the feeling i should know more about Joss Whedon than I do) but it keeps popping up randomly so i finally got round to it. And yes- oh my god it is amazing and i have not been able to stop randomly singing bits from the songs which sound…weird enough in context but crazy without  (“Four sweater vests!” “…a murder would be nice of course! Bad Horse! Bad Horse!” ”No…i love the…air”).

Anyways, yesterday was open evening at my school and I was helping out in the classics department. So an evening of playing Bacchus’ Banquet and a card version of monopoly where all the properties are from Pompeii/Ostia/Herculaneum. No one cares about the Classics department (…by which i mean room. and one full-time teacher. one part-time. with a beard)- they were all on their way to science. It was kinda fun though.

Ooh also last friday we did 2 capsize tests in kayaking (one…normally and one with a splashdeck). Which was okay (i am however terrible at climbing out of rivers). Plus when we got back to school me and Imogen ate Doctor Who shaped pasta (…well not shaped like the Doctor obviously…more Daleks and K9s…)  which we found very exciting.

Also last sunday I visited my American cousins who now live really close by so that was nice. I did eat a lot of their Hershey’s Kisses. They also gave me a bottle of Strawberry Hill! (not…randomly I asked for some because of the whole Nerdfighter thing about it). (speaking of Nerdfighters my “oh, won’t you be in Nerdfighter like with me?” shirt arrived! Wow. I own the same shirt as Hank! Very excited. Of course I still really really want a Franklin and The Dead Presidents Shirt) (which…should be a band name).

Oh- another band name: ”A Powdering of Bogey-Shanks”. Now, I am still trying to get through the Ross book on Richard III and apparently for his coronation he wore a  ”doublet of blue cloth-of-gold ‘wrought with nets and pineapples” and a long gown of purple velvet, furred with ermine and enriched with no less than 3,300 powderings of bogy-shanks”. This is apparently “an ensemble of gaudy richness even by 15th century standards”. Seriously. A doublet wrought with pineapples (oooh! excellent song name!)? What was Richard thinking (…I am now imagining Lady Gaga in the same outfit. Eeew)?! Now bogey-shanks are actually kind of boring- they are thin strips of fleece from like the lower leg of a lamb. But wikipedia doesn’t know that. It took several internet searches to verify what Ross was saying. For a few minutes i was wondering if he just made it up to mess with people (“oh writing a history book is boring. I’m going to say Richard had a cloak made of bogey-shanks. tee hee hee”). Kind of disappointed he wasn’t actually. If I ever write a history book….just don’t read it.

I live in Salem, MA and yesterday was the kick off of our month-long celebration of Halloween!  You have to start thinking early about Halloween around these parts!!  We’re having a Dr. Horrible themed Halloween Party this year, so I thought a Dr. Horrible themed Etsy Friday would be a great way to kick off  October! (Oh- BTW if you don’t own the dvd- it’s totally worth the purchase for the awesome commentary!)

It’s no secret that Neil Patrick Harris is my one true  man-crush. Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog and How I Met Your Mother Season 1 have both taken up permanent residence on my backup computer and will be apart of any restore I ever have to do to the aging machine.

With that said, Neil Patrick Harris has once again knocked it out of the musical ballpark with a cameo on Batman The Brave and the Bold as the villainous Music Meister.

Kinda looks like NPH too...

The Music Meiser is the newest villain to attack Batman and Co. With the ability to hypnotize anyone into doing his bidding via his singing, the Meiser makes it his mission to become the king of both Broadway and crime. He’s definitely got the multiple-costume changes down for the job but can he outdo “The Bat” on the grandest of stages?

Did I mention he makes Batman sing in this episode? Yes, he makes Batman sing.

He uses a Batman Auto-Tuner. No Joke.

In this musical episode, everyone from Green Arrow to Black Canary sings and joins in the fight to defeat the evil Music Meiser. Its magical, and probably the only way I could ever see Aquaman dance like a pretty princess.
