I was listening to an excerpt of Patricia Bray’s workshop lecture on the protagonist. Bray is the author of The Chronicles of Josan and the Sword of Change series. Although she actually spent more time (at least in the clip) talking about the sidekick, she made some very interesting points that immediately pushed me into a few wild speculations on how social networking and the use of technology might be shifting the way we perceive ourselves and others.

Sidekicks, Bray states, are useful as they can stimulate audience interest in the first person while still acting as chronicler. She uses the Watson/Holmes model as an example: Watson narrates the story, taking care of all of the workaday details, while remaining in first person and thereby creating a gateway for reader identification.

Yet the sidekick narrator, she adds, also allows the reader the cushy position of superiority to Watson. We may identify with the good Dr, but we can imagine ourselves to be more like Holmes, the old “If I were like Watson, I like totally would have figured that out by this point.” And last and most obvious, the appeal in creating creating a sidekick , Bray states, is because multiple characters pick up a larger audience/readership.

So, where am I going with all of this?

Social networking applications also allow us to present a “real” version of ourselves that takes on the dual role of first person chronicler. Take the status update in which we can switch back from first or third person. “I am not happy that my cat has lobbed a hair ball on my lap,” or “Ryan is not happy that her cat has gobbed a hair ball on her lap.” This is both an act of chronicling and a call for identification.

Second, in creating these personas on Facebook or Twitter, its often the case that we try to project someone who is more Holmes than Watson — and this is a very loose comparison, by which I mean the role of a main protagonist — but the irony is that through our labors our real selves play sidekick to our own projection.

Third, no matter how little glamor or mystique our own profiles actually present, our voyeuristic tendencies mixed in with our ability to haze over reality, allow us, like the reader, to feel superior to those other personas that our “friends” project on the web. Think about how many times you’ve curled your lip ever so slightly at seeing your friends misspell a word or hearing that their movie plans include a second viewing of New Moon? That we rarely reflect on how asinine we may in fact look to others, insures that we remain busy pumping air into that puffed up and ultimately phony profile.

And as for attracting a larger audience through multiple characters, can you think of a better example than Twitter, where retweets from our collection of followees spawn an even greater of followers and so on until we can barely make out why we signed up in the first place.

There are arguments that social networking is in fact thinning out our personalities, making us hollower, flatter, and ultimately less interesting. I definitely agree that there’s something to that. But it’s even more unsettling when we remember that it wasn’t Watson who was performing all of those amazing mental feats. It was Holmes who kept his eyes and his mind trained firmly on the world, while we, pale shadows to that series of sparsely worded one liners, fabricate a weak reflection of what was once ourselves.

I’m intrigued though by expressions like ‘evolutionarily inferior’ & the idea that science’s inability to decide if one race is inferior to another represents some sort of moral issue that only theology can resolve. I don’t think it’s that science hasn’t yet come up with subtle enough tests to know whether or not race/species x is inferior to race/species y. It’s more that evolutionary theory and relative values like superiority/inferiority are pretty much unrelated.

If variation in a quantifiable and hereditary feature could confer survival advantage (eg peak running speed in cheetahs) then, using this example, a greater number of ‘faster’ cheetahs will survive & reproduce than ‘slower’ cheetahs, other things being equal. But a faster cheetah isn’t in general ‘superior’ to a slower cheetah. Its speed is superior, but that doesn’t make it superior.

Relating this to the human intelligence example, then it is theoretically possible to construct some metric (probably boiling down to = mark attained in an ‘intelligence test’ of a certain specific type) which it might be theoretically possible to establish as hereditary. We might theoretically be able to relate this metric to specific races in a statistically significant way. But in practice it would be fraught with difficulty – particularly in proving it was hereditary enough for ‘evolution’ to be a possible explanation. And even if that hurdle was overcome, we’d still have to map the metric to common/familiar/everyday notions of ‘intelligence’. And even then we would only be able to say one group had evolved superior ‘intelligence’ to another group, not that the first group had evolved to be in general ‘superior’ to the other – ie that relatively higher ‘intelligence’ conferred ‘superiority’.

The point I’m trying to make is that it’s not so much that science is incomplete or leaves the issue of inferiority/superiority in doubt, it’s more that the whole idea of using science to decide whether one group is inferior or superior to another is misguided.

But that doesn’t mean the only alternative is to leap into theism. (I’ll get to this in a minute.)

I appreciate what you’re saying about the possible connection between ‘observable features such as intellectual capacity [and] …ethical ideas such as value and dignity’. I think though that the ultimate reason we don’t send someone to prison for squashing a beetle is not that beetles are ‘lower creatures’, but that we are not beetles. Having said that, the ethics of our relations to non-human organisms is a hotly debated area (see eg Peter Singer on animal rights). If there is a rule of thumb (eg for issues of animal cruelty) the criterion is probably assumed ability to suffer rather than assumed ability to think.

(Sidebar: It is ironic to speculate that, if there were people who actually did derive their ethics from evolutionary theory, they might conclude the penalty for squashing a beetle ought to be more severe than the penalty for homicide, as insects are probably the most evolutionarily successful group of organisms on the planet. They make up more than half of all known living organisms; and in diversity represent over 90% of life forms – beetles themselves accounting for about 25%…)

My Primary Care Physician retired a while back, and I’ve been examined by the doctor who replaced him, a Dr. Holmes. Dr. Holmes seems to be a nice enough person, and fairly familiar with Congenital Heart Defects.

The nurse that worked with the retired doctor is now working for Dr. Holmes – that makes sense, as she would already know the patients. But I found out today that her surname is Watson!

I feel much better knowing that Holmes and Watson are on the case!

Por su parte, David-Lloyd también posee un amplio curriculum en series como The Bill y actuaciones en varios largometrajes. La conducción de la cinta ha recalado sin embargo en la prácticamente desconocida Rachel Goldenberg, que abordará su segundo proyecto tras el rotundo fracaso de Sunday School Musical, nacida tras el triunfo en taquilla de los musicales adolescentes de Disney.

Con el evidente bajo presupuesto y este dispar reparto se nos presenta al detective de la eterna pipa en uno de sus desafíos más grandes, imponentes y, desde luego, más bizarros. Dinosaurios y seres mitológicos amenazan el futuro de la humanidad empezando desde la capital inglesa en pleno siglo XIX. Si Sir Arthur Conan Doyle levantara la cabeza…

Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson dutzen sich! Das ist mir als aller erstes aufgefallen. In den meisten anderen Hörbuchreihen sietzen sich der Detektiv und der Mediziner selbst nach jahrelanger Wohngemeinschaft noch.

Fünf Apfelsinenkerne, per Post erhalten, versetzen einen jungen Mann in Angst und Schrecken. Er bittet Sherlock Holmes eindringlich um Hilfe, zumal zuvor sowohl der Vater als auch der Onkel des jungen Mannes nach erhalt von fünf Apfelsinenkernen unter mysteriösen Umständen ums Leben kam. Sherlock Holmes nimmt den äusserst spannenden Fall an – wunderbar gelesen von Wolfgang Gerber.

Yes, I’m talking about Sherlock Holmes new movie. Nggak sabar banget buat liat film ini~ Film ini bakal diputer di bioskop-bioskop Indo ga ya? I hope so! Sementara yang lain nunggu film 2012 atau New Moon, saia lebih antusias sama film satu ini.

Film yang disutradarai oleh Guy Ritchie ini katanya akan menampilkan sesuatu yang berbeda dari film-film Sherlock Holmes sebelumnya, sebuah action movie yang akan menampilkan Holmes yang sebenarnya sesuai dengan cerita original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Film ini ditangani oleh studio Warner Bros movie (yang hasilnya pasti akan sangat menjanjikan ) dan shootingnya akan dilakukan di London.

Sosok Holmes diperankam oleh Robert Downey Jr, dan Jude Law akan memerankan sahabat Holmes, Dr. Watson. Mary -Watson’s love interest- diperankan oleh Kelly Reilly. Dan sosok wanita yang telah mengalahkan Holmes, Irene Adler diperankan oleh Rachel McAdams dan Mark Strong sebagai Blackwood, the ‘unremittingly evil’ baddie

Setau saia film ini direncanakan release di Amerika saat Natal, 25 Desember 2009 ini, tapi mungkin baru akan diputar disini pada awal 2010. Mungkin saat ulang tahun Holmes, 6 Januari, yang juga ultah saia? Hahaha, saia sangat mengharapkannya!

Holmes disini akan lebih fokus pada repressed English side dari karakter milik Sir Arthur dan statusnya sebagai seorang bohemian, seorang patriot, serta karakternya yang aneh bin nyentrik :p

In our travels, we Gentlemen are privileged to encounter countless peculiar and wonderful characters in taverns, service stations, and street corners across the country.  The sight of two well-dressed men in a gas station or barroom or hotel lobby seems to put many people in the mood to chat.  Chat with us, that is.  And, as the half of our duo who greatly enjoys a quick chat with strangers, this pleases me to no end.

Today, we are delighted to inaugurate our Quick Conversations with The Gentlemen feature.  Here we’ll share with you transcriptions of some of our most memorable brief chats with strangers.

The Councilman enters convenience store wearing suspenders, bow tie, etc.

Customer: (to Andy Bean) He with you?

Customer: (to The Councilman) Wabson!

Sherlock Holmes! Woo!

You have to admit, I do have nice hair.

The super sleuth, one Sherlock Holmes, a private eye detective created by the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has been represented countless times within the last hundred years in many a film and television production. I would happily say that this were the case in regards to the latest addition to the Holmes family tree. I would that is, if it wasn’t set to be the biggest and best yet, will it possibly become the most famous of them all?

The 2009 remake, starring one of Hollywood’s increasingly popular actors, Robert Downey Jr. (A Scanner Darkly, Iron Man, Tropic Thunder) is set in 1891, where him and his lovable assistant Dr. Watson, played by Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Artificial Intelligence: AI, Alfie) attempt to stop a conspiracy to destroy Britain. The film is directed by Guy Ritchie, whose popular works include that of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, Revolver and RocknRolla. Other cast include the beautiful Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Wedding Crashers, The Time Traveler’s Wife), Mark Strong (Syriana, Sunshine, Stardust) and William Hope (Aliens, Triple X, 9/11: The Twin Towers) and with a $80 million budget, it’s bound to be a heck of a film.

You need not worry, not only is the film critically acclaimed to be a huge success over Christmas day (it’s release date… Obviously) and Boxing day, Warner have also already greenlit a sequel. Mr Downey Jr. also seems to have some very nice hair and that is NOT debatable.

I visited London in May 2009. My hotel was adjacent to the Marylebone station. One day I glanced at a London map and out of sheer luck found out that Baker Street was just a few blocks away. Since I’m a Sherlock Holmes fan (though I’ve read every story only once) I dropped by the museum.

The proprietor of the museum refurbished it into a late nineteenth century style. Some wax figures depict famous scenes of Holmes’ cases.

I even got a business card from Sherlock Holmes!

Large hedges are "ruining lives"

MSPS ARE being urged to take action to prevent HEDGE RAGE from ruining lives.

A new nationwide campaign launched by ScotHedge calls on new laws to be introduced so planning chiefs can put an end to neighbour disputes.

Campaign leader Dr Colin Watson said: “We call it vegetation tyranny.”

“In the most extreme cases it can leave people living in terror from threats of violence and the need to involve the police.”

Too scared

And the group are calling on “victims” of high hedge disputes to come forward and lend support to their cause.

They think there are thousands of people in Scotland who are suffering because a dispute over a high hedge has caused problems between neighbours – but are too scared to come forward.

At the moment there is no law in Scotland to help resolve any arguments – unlike England in Wales – and the group are hoping that this changes.

Dr Watson said: “In the vast majority of cases these hedge problems are something that can be settled quite amicably between reasonable neighbours over a cup of tea – and that is what usually happens.

“However, if the hedge owner is bloody minded about it, then there is nothing anybody can do, including the courts or the local authority.

“Nowhere to turn”

“We tend to find the people who are suffering are often more vulnerable – widows, retirees, and those with disabilities, whose homes are their sole refuge and main asset.

“However literally anyone can find themselves in this situation with nowhere to turn. There is a legal vacuum which needs to be addressed urgently because this problem is not disappearing, it is getting worse.”

And it isn’t just the view that is spoilt by tall hedges – campaigners say that they can block out TV signals, damage vehicles and reduce the price of neighbouring properties.

As it stands at the moment, residents have no right to legally challenge giant hedges – but a Scottish Government consultation on the issue means there is light at the end of the tunnel for sufferers.

“Ridiculous”

Dr Watson said: “It is ridiculous that you must get approval from your local council to build almost anything more than two metres high, yet thanks to poor legislation you don’t have to have permission to grow a 10 metre hedge that dwarfs your neighbour’s house and progressively destroys their reasonable enjoyment of a home.”

Community Safety Minister Fergus Ewing introduced the consultation, which will run until November.

ScotHedge hope that it will lead to effective legislation that will allow councils to put a limit on hedge height.

Dr Watson added: “We need anyone who is afflicted by problem trees and hedges to come forward and make their voices heard by responding to the consultation.”
