“The technology of essay drafts” as a post topic in an Ed Tech Blog? Why not? The word “technology” has it’s origins in the Greek technē, roughly meaning craft or craftsmanship. Without getting into a long justification…the way we design our assignments can also count as a technology.

I had a brief, but interesting conversation with a colleague last week, about our undergraduate essays, and how we can help our students learn how to create a good essay structure, keep them honest without resorting to something like Turn-it-in, and help them select appropriate resources, both online and in print. We just can’t assume that all of our first-year undergraduates have well-developed essay-writing skills and will compose a good final draft without coaching.

In my own practice as a first-year music appreciation instructor, I require students to submit a first draft and a final copy. The first draft contains only:

• intro paragraph / statement of thesis or topic / research question
• an outline of the body of the essay – an indication of what subtopics will be addressed, in what order, how they will be explained and supported, and what resources will be used (these paragraphs don’t actually have to be written – better if they aren’t)
• a sketch of the essay conclusion
• a full bibliography of any and all resources cited, consulted and considered

With the intro, we can address the appropriateness and focus of the essay topic or question. Is the topic going to be too broad to handle in 1500 words? By asking for the outline of the essay body, we can deal with the essay structure. Does the macro-structure of the essay flow well? Does it make sense? Does it stay on topic? Do the suggested examples support the points the student wants to make? Does the suggested conclusion really follow from the body of the essay? Should the conclusion be modified to fit the essay, or vice versa?

Check every resource listed in the bibliography. As professors of your field, you’re likely already familiar with many of the print resources and even some of the online resources too. Any books or articles that are unfamiliar can likely be found through a Google Scholar search and partially available to read online. When an unfamiliar website is referenced, there are a couple of key questions for us to consider: Who is the author? Who is the intended audience? Is the information correct and appropriately cited? With any resource, we need to assess its usefulness to the essay. This also gives us an opportunity to address the question of how to use Wikipedia articles effectively, just like any other encyclopedia article.

Do spelling and grammar matter at this point? Yes and No. Yes, spelling of key terms such as names should be corrected now. Otherwise, that’s a final editing task before submitting the final draft.

Should we assign a grade for the draft? This is another can of worms altogether, but I do think we should – just not a heavy weighting. Most university students I’ve dealt with find the acquisition of marks to be a strong motivating factor.

The most important aspect of this exercise is TIMELY FEEDBACK. We have to let our students know what questions we’re asking and sometimes what our answers are too. We need to let them know how we think they can better focus their essays. We need to let them know what our assessments are of their resources, which ones to avoid (and why), and to suggest others. We also need to do this quickly (I know…easier said than done). There’s no point in giving great feedback a week before the final draft is due – by then, it’s too late.

I also keep a copy (electronic, of course) of the essay draft with my comments for comparison with the final draft. It’s very rewarding to read final copies that truly have improved on the draft. Sometimes the improvements are directly related to my comments. Sometimes my suggestions have been rejected in favour of a totally different, yet equally improved focus. Doesn’t matter. Better is good. Any changes to the essay structure from draft to final are also an indication (never a guarantee) that the work is the student’s own.

Deoarece vorbim despre un site de pariuri, este normal ca interfaţa să asigure facilităţi orientate utilizator precum  : posibilitatea utilizatorului de a vedea istoria pariurilor jucate până acum, de a vedea ce pariuri a propus (să nu uităm de pariurile speciale ce se pot face pe acest site!) şi ce mize au fost jucate pe respectivele pariuri. De asemenea, pentru simplitate, userul trebuie să aibă opţiunea de a pune în cont o sumă dorită şi de a paria folosind acei bani, decât să trimită bani pentru fiecare pariu.

Toate aceste lucruri duc evident la nevoie de a implementa o structură bazată pe conturi, în care un utilizator trebuie să se înregistreze pe site pentru a putea beneficia de toate aceste facilităţi. În primă fază noi am implementat cele două module esenţiale pentru acest mecanism, şi anume interfaţa de autentificare (pentru cei care au cont deja) şi interfaţa de înregistrare. Pentru acestea este nevoie de programare server-side, pentru care noi am ales limbajul PHP (PHP: HyperText  Prepocessor).

Datele sunt preluate de la utilizator printr-un formular şi sunt salvate într-o bază de date. Ca sistem de gestiune a bazelor de date am ales MySQL, PHP având deja funcţii care pot interacţiona cu un astfel de server.

În principiu , realizarea acestor două formulare nu ridică probleme. Totuşi , programarea server-side are nişte restricţii despre care merită să vorbim puţin. În mod normal, un formular de înregistrare ar fi structurat astfel : o pagină în care se introduc datele, o pagină care conţine scriptul PHP ce prelucrează datele şi o pagină la care ar trebui să fie redirectat utilizatorul după ce s-a înregistrat (nu are sens să rămână pe pagina cu formularul de înscriere) .De asemenea,reamintim că protocolul HTTP se bazează pe cereri : clientul (browserul) cere o anumită pagină , de la o locaţie specificată şi serverul trimite răspunsul în format HTML. Dacă pagina conţine cod PHP, acesta va fi interpretat (de server) şi eventualul output al acestui cod va fi adăugat la conţinutul paginii ce va trimis clientului ca răspuns.

HTTP este un protocol stateless, adică nu există un context al cererilor. Ele sunt independente, nu se salvează informaţii de la o cerere la alta. De asemenea, în cadrul unei cereri nu se poate solicita decât o singură pagină. Asupra acestei proprietăţi vom mai reveni, dar momentan este important să o menţionăm.

Pagina în care se află scriptul este cerută de browser când au fost introduse datele , de obicei prin apasărea unui buton , şi tot scriptul va efectua şi redirectarea. Pentru a efectua o redirectare, serverul nu trebuie să fi trimis output HTML ca răspuns la cererea curentă. De aceea, scriptul de PHP se va afla într-o pagină separată. În cazul nostru, tot procesul de autentificare se face într-o singură pagină,ceea ce complică puţin lucrurile. Inevitabil, serverul a trimis deja o parte din output şi nu mai poate trimite altă pagină ca răspuns. Soluţia noastră a fost redirectarea folosind o tehnologie client-side, şi anume JavaScript.

O altă problemă, despre care probabil că vom mai discuta când vom vorbi despre securitatea site-ului, este cea a modului în care sunt preluate datele de către scripturile PHP. Este preluat şirul de caractere introdus de utilizator şi concatenat cu alte şiruri pentru a forma o comandă SQL (ex: introduce userul “sebaNU” in baza de date – “sebaNU” este textul introdus de utilizator). Dacă utilizatorul ştie să profite de acest lucru, prin datele introduse poate crea o comandă SQL cu efecte nedorite pentru noi . Acest lucu poarta numele de SQL Injection şi poate fi evitat prin trecerea şirului de caractere introdus printr-un filtru care să alăture un escape character fiecărui caracter special din SQL. Noi am implementat această funcţionalitate, folosind o funcţie din PHP.

Închid aici menţionând că orice întrebare,completare sau informaţie legată de cele de mai sus este binevenită.

The draft constitution is out; thank Almighty God, at last.

At first glance, I was very impressed with what has been drafted, especially the Bill of rights. It brings forth a lot of rights that are taken for granted in the developed nations. That am grateful to the scribes.

However, when it comes to the issues of devolved government it is too sketchy to be taken serious, The issues of representation has not been addressed, yes it is great we could have the Upper and Lower House of parliament, but without proportional representation the whole chapter of devolved government falls into pieces.

Furthermore, the tenure of the senators should not be the same as the members of the Lower House, in fact it should be longer and the whole Senate tenure should not end at the same time. Otherwise, what is the point of having the Upper house?

Another very concerning issue is the Executive. We need to separate the legislators from the government and both from the Judiciary, the independence and co-relation of the three is vital for effective government, parliament and the Judiciary.

Clear cut separation of responsibility need to prevail. The harmonised draft just pleases the masses and does not address the thorny issues of separation of responsibilities of the ruling classes to protect them from being corrupted by the powers that come with those responsibilities.

The President should be the sole chief executive, given mandate by the people to govern the country.

The Parliament as whole, both the Upper and the Lower house has the responsibility to keep the executive in check and to pass bills for the welfare of our nation.

The Judiciary has the mandate of the people through the constitution to keep the parliament, the President and the population in check.

If we cannot have clear cut separation of responsibilities, we rather stick with the old colonial constitution and do a few tweaks here and there to suit our political ambitions and interests!!

Lets put our minds together and rectify this not so clear directives from the draft constitution.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on November 17 asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to examine and complete a draft decision on an overall golf course plan through 2020 and said no golf courses should be built on rice-growing land.

PM Dung also said no golf courses should be built on land intended strictly for industrial zones, urban areas and forests, and not to use state budget funds to build the courses.

According to Luu Duc Hai, director of the Department of Urban Development, golf courses in the country cover from 80 to 700 hectares each with most built on farmland.

As well, some investors make use of land for golf courses to develop other projects, and land for the actual golf courses accounts for just a small percentage of the total land needed for the projects, Mr. Hai said.

Land rent for golf courses is lower than that of other property such as villas, houses and trade centers, so many investors have exploited this to recoup their investment faster.

To restrict the number of such cases, PM Dung asked the ministry to make clear in the draft law that no hotels or villas are allowed to be built on land intended for golf courses and the land cannot be sold or transferred.

In regards to granting licenses to build golf courses, it would be the responsibility of the provincial People’s Committees to decide which investors to grant licenses to and revoke licenses in cases where state rules are violated, he said.
