“Smoked in the Quarter mile” By Maurice D.Williams

Before the movie,The Fast & The Furious brought more exposure to the street racing culture.Tricked-out Nissan skylines,Integra’s and Impalas thrived underground through The Nopi competitions held late September every year. It’s where drivers would have competitions to see who had the“flyest flipped-out paint job”and Supreme hydraulics lift on their cars. This was influence by the Latino culture and accepted by other Blacks,Asian the majority in this generation of “Motorheads”.

The events are about major Swag. You have to bring it” or you’re outta here!.Your reputation’s paramount. In the early days it was mocked as having no“credibility”of legitimacy. It was 4-5 years ago when I became a fan.During those years participants “got out of dodge”when police were in route. It was illegal to drag-race quarter miles. But look at these sponsored events,it’s accepted today.I’m still fascinated with these competitions. It’s a“who’s who of swag”,that never gets old!.Oh,go check out,The new “ Fast & The Furious”movie.Mostly everyone’s back,Vin Diesel with Paul Walker. It’s by far the best of the movie franchise.

The BangShift.com members come up with some cool stuff, and this time we got tipped by a forum post from user jword2001. He posted the video seen below that shows Top Fuel Motorcycle rider Korry Hogan laying over his drag bike at 220 mph on a 5.88-second pass, and then saving it! This was at the AMA Dragbike Finals in Valdosta, Georgia, in 2009.

However, a little web surfing reveals that Korry Hogan is no stranger to death-defying antics on two wheels with nitro. The guy has stones like bowling balls. These are all must-see videos.

Here’s the one with Hogan putting the bike horizontal in the lights at 220 mph. Head over to BangShift for more insane crash videos.

Last saturday at Patty’s Burger Time ,Dave Sorenson brought me these great photos he took back in 1959 .These were Hot Rods that hung out at Howy’s gas station where he worked. The 35 belonged to Bob and the 34 to Jepson. The single finger salute is marked DEBENDINER , 49 Merc. I wish I more of that custom Merc. Stay tuned for the 1936 3 window taken in 1962.

whatever you have to do to find this video either on yahoo music or msn video or by now i am sure it is posted on You Tube– you gotta check out John Rich’s video for a song “Shuttin’ Detroit Down”. If you listen to the lyrics it pretty much says it all.

We as a nation have lost our way when Americans who have not just fought and risked their lives for this country and what it really stands for, but then we merely leave those people without a job to be able to enjoy their lives. ALL IN THE NAME OF GREED. This economy and all it’s problems are not due to the workers in any way -shape- or form. It is all because of Wall Street and the Bankers. Greed and deceit are what has crippled our economy and it is not the politicians who are in office right this minute but the ones who had the power and the authority in the past (some of those are indeed still in Washington D.C.) that screwed every taxpayer out of their future. The current arguments about national healthcare and the money it will cost are not the problem….the problem is they have BORROWED every dime we have spent for our “WAR ON TERROR” and then they stole all our retirements and gave themselves massive bonuses for doing it all. We encourage every American company to send jobs overseas and give them tax breaks for doing so and our own American companies have legal ramifications for building dangerous products that kill and maim our consumers while these foreign companies can send lead paint by the tons and formica shavings in our pet food and baby formula and can pollute the planet and the air without any economic penalties because our courts cannot stop them.

All because without jobs we Americans shop anywhere we can save a dime. And every one of us is to blame for part of it also. While it seems that the people in charge point to everyone else for the reason we are in this situation instead of taking blame for their mess. Man up and look in the mirror.

now it is time to put away my soapbox.

We loaded up the truck and trailer last weekend and headed for the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After a

We loaded up the truck and trailer last weekend and headed for the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After an uneventful drive and stopping in St. George to pick up Jet Snow we arrived in Las Vegas. “The Strip” puts on Friday night Midnight Mayhem events similar to Rocky Mountain Raceways midnight drags. I’ve never raced anywhere but Rocky Mountain Raceways and Wendover Raceway so I was excited.

For some reason, the first pass right off the trailer is always my best. I joked with the hubby we need to start loading the Talon back up on the trailer after every run. Anyway, I threw Jet in the passenger seat and we got ready to race. First pass was an 11.2 @ 130. Wait, what?? I fumbled around with the slip to make sure I was reading that right. Wow, that was like the sixth or seventh pass for the car down ANY track. Needless to say I was pretty stoked! When I checked the logs I was getting some knock. Before we headed down to race I’d up’d the boost to around 30psi. I’m fairly sure I’m running out of fuel pump at higher rpm’s so I had to richen the car up and subtract timing. She wasn’t very happy with that so I only managed to run an 11.4 and 11.5.

Bring on the videos!

After viewing continuous tweets, videos, blogs & forums on the automotive scene from around the world I find myself wanting more and more to shoot what has inspired me since I was a kid. Like all things out here on the sun coast they seem to disappear come the winter months and things get dull very quickly. This does not inspire me; although I obviously keep myself creatively entertained by shooting scale models in my studio and the odd skimboarding session. But when the summer months are here you feel the car culture buzz with any summer drive as your bound to see some sort of modified ride. I did a short post back in September on the motorsport scene here on the Sunshine Coast which was titled Summer Cruisers. That post actually made the Freshly Pressed blog on wordpress.com. With the lack of things to shoot out here I thought I would drop a follow up to my previous post, this one featuring more photos from The Sunshine Coast Drag Racing Association event at the Sechelt Airport. The local car club, Coasters CC, gets together with other enthusiasts from around BC for a fun day of friendly racing. As I finish writing this up (rain & wind pelting my window) I can’t help but feeling limited to my surroundings, perhaps a move back to Vancouver would be appropriate then I’d be able to shoot a plethora of radness and even get some seat time in autoxing my miata. Hmmm, what to do, can I have the best of both worlds? For now enjoy this little bit of the Coast…

The white steel wheels give a ‘factory stock’ look. There’s a few give-aways but the most obvious tipoff is the 2″ cowl hood… until you start looking a little more closely. There are other hints to what this car is all about, but I’ll cover them in a later post.

Stay tuned to learn more about my car. I’ll start from the beginnning about the car and what I’ve been doing over the last few years to get it into what you see in the photos above. We’ll cover the whole process, from ‘as-found’ to the present.

I’ll try to keep it interesting by mixing up the time line, so the posts won’t be predictable.

I was bench racing at Wes Rice’s shop today and was about to leave as all he had in his fridge were pickles( Read NO BEER) When the subject of the Barons car club came up ,and a friend of Wes’s said he had been a Baron. With only a few members in the early 50’s I am always amazed when I find another. Bill Stanley drove a blue 1948 Dodge back then and a 1963 Chevy pickup now. All OB, originall BARONS are automatically Barons’ today, So a big welcome to Bill. He gave me names of several more “OLD Barons” I will be contacting. As soon as Bill gets me some pics of his Barons ride I will get them posted. Then Wes , who I have known since high school asked how do you become a Baron.I said not by having only pickles in the fridge. He promised to mend his ways.

Rumble master Jimmy the T, please add his shop to the shop tour rumble as he assured me there will be BEER in the fridge. Please welcome Wes as our newest member, he drives a 1941 Chevy pickup hot rod, he built years ago. You have seen him at Patty’s Burger Time

VP Racing Fuels, the Official Racing Fuel of NHRA Championship Drag Racing, fueled all the Pro Class

VP Racing Fuels, the Official Racing Fuel of NHRA Championship Drag Racing, fueled all the Pro Class winners at the year-end Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona as well as the 2009 points Champions. Antron Brown and Mike Neff rode VP Nitro Race power to wins in Top Fuel and Funny Car respectively, while Tony Schumacher and Robert Hight used the same fuel to secure the points championship for those classes. Meanwhile, VP’s C25 racing fuel powered Greg Anderson and Eddie Krawiec to the Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle wins, as well as Mike Edwards and Hector Arana to their respective season championships.

The sky-high championship drama that remained after Robert Hight in Funny Car and Mike Edwards in Pro Stock earned their season titles Saturday evening, ratcheted up in Top Fuel and Pro Stock Motorcycle before Tony Schumacher and Hector Arana, respectively, claimed the titles. Although the Top Fuel title officially was decided when Tony Schumacher, with a two-point lead, and Larry Dixon, both unexpectedly lost in the semifinals, in essence it was won Saturday night when Schumacher stole Dixon’s No. 1 qualifying berth and the points that go with it to go from a two-point deficit to a two-point lead entering race day, a margin that ended up being the final score. Arana won the championship in the semifinals when Eddie Krawiec, who needed to win the race and set a national record, was unable to earn a backup run in the semifinals. He did win the race and, ironically, like Dixon, finished second by two points.

The stage had long been set in everyone’s mind that Schumacher and Dixon would square off in a winner-take-all final round, but someone forgot to tell Massey and Brown, who worked their way to a surprising final round. The final was short-lived, though, as Massey left .008-second too soon, then smoked the tires on Don Prudhomme’s machine. Brown raced to the title, his eighth in the class, with a strong 3.801.

“Of all my years racing, this was a career year,” said Brown. “We won a lot of rounds and got a lot of points, but we just have to tackle this Countdown a little different way next year, and we’re going to work real hard on that. This was a whole new package we were running this weekend and not the stuff we were running earlier this season, and it kind of bit us in the Countdown. We got our car turned around this weekend, so hats off to Brian [Corradi] and Mark [Oswald, crew chiefs]. We’ll have a lot more resources next year [being with Don Schumacher Racing] and be back at this race next year running for the title like [Schumacher and Dixon] were this year.”

Neff, a former world champion crew chief with Gary Scelzi, finally got his first win as a driver in a wild final-round battle with teammate Ashley Force Hood. Neff smoked the tires at 60 feet and appeared dead in the water until Force Hood smoked her tires 200 feet out. Neff recovered better, and while Force Hood was sashaying wildly all over the track and eventually tagged the wall, Neff was long gone to a 5.13 to record his first win.

“It feels awesome to get our first win. We’ve been to a lot of finals and had some bad breaks and just couldn’t seem to get it done, so your confidence starts to get rattled and you start wondering if you’re ever going to get a win. Today we got a lot of breaks but we ran good at the right time.

Neff, who reached the final earlier this year in Phoenix and in Reading, came from the No. 10 spot with his Drive One Mustang by getting past Jim Head, team owner John Force, and Tim Wilkerson, running as quick as 4.12 in the second-round conquest of his boss.

Force Hood didn’t win the championship that was locked up by her teammate, Robert Hight, on Saturday, but her run to the final did lock up second place despite the best efforts of several other drivers to steal it from her. After qualifying her Dean Antonelli and Ron Douglas-tuned Castrol GTX Mustang No. 1, she raced past Bob Bode, Del Worsham, and Ron Capps to reach the final, the 13th of her Funny Car career.

After a late season full of Mike Edwards domination – capped by Edwards’ coronation as the new champ Saturday evening – Anderson and Kurt Johnson both ended up with a final season outing that gives them hope after a pair of disappointing seasons. In a rematch of last season’s final round here, Anderson won again when Johnson turned on the red-light with a -.017 foul. The win is Anderson’s milestone 60th win in 88 career finals.

Anderson, unaccustomed to playing second fiddle, can go into the off-season confident that Ken Black’s Summit team is back as they outran Edwards all day, including in the semifinals where Anderson beat the new champ , 6.57 to 6.66. Prior to that, Anderson had run 6.580 and 6.575, outperforming Edwards in both of those rounds as well in defeating Dave Northrop and red-lighting Greg Stanfield.

“Mike did a whale of a job this year and he deserves to be the champion,” Anderson acknowledged, “but we found a way today to outperform him. The years I won the championship, I always wanted to win this race, too. You think, ‘If I don’t win this race, it will be a hole in that championship season’ because when you’re the champion you want to be standing on that last stage. It makes the title complete. I certainly don’t want to take anything away from Mike because he had 24 great races, but right now I’m the last guy standing tonight and the happiest guy right now. Tomorrow night [at the awards ceremony], he’ll be the happiest guy, but right now I’m the happiest guy.

Krawiec, who won the season title last year without winning a race, finished in second place with his fifth win of the season when Doug Horne turned on the red-light by .001-second. Krawiec ran a dazzling 6.905, low e.t. of the meet and a run he could have used the round before.

Krawiec needed a near miracle to catch Arana in their battle for the season championship, even after Arana went out unexpectedly in round two on a red-light. By that point, Krawiec had already beaten Steve Johnson and Jim Underdahl with a pair of 6.95s but found himself needing next to not only beat teammate Andrew Hines in the semifinals but run at least 6.918 to get a backup for the national record and the 20 bonus points he’d need in addition to also winning the final round to squeak past Arana. Hines went -.010 red against Krawiec, but Krawiec’s third-straight 6.95 was nowhere close to the necessary backup he needed, and didn’t even earn the Harley rider lane choice against Horne in the final round, the 17th of his career.

“If I had had that final-round e.t. [in the semifinals], I think Hector would have been sweating it out a little bit,” said Krawiec. “My bike was on a rail there in the final, finally. That was the first pass of the weekend that I could say that my bike made a respectable pass down this track, and I’m pretty excited.

“Last year, I was fortunate to come up here and not have the race win and have the championship, but this year I still am a very lucky person to be in here talking about getting the race win and not the championship. It came down to two points. It shows you how important qualifying is. We bobbled a little bit this weekend in qualifying, which ultimately could have cost us. We were trying to keep Hector from getting to that three-round deficit for us, and unfortunately for us, we didn’t, and it shows in the end. But our Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley Davidson bike has been running really well second half of the year. I’m excited. I’m looking forward to next year. This year’s behind us already, so looking forward to 2010.”

The ground shakes almost to the point of having to hold onto something, your heart pounds as the sound vibration goes through you and even wearing earplugs doesn’t deaden the decibel level that much. Welcome to NHRA Drag Racing.

I decided to go out to Pomona for the season Finale of the NHRA / Full Throttle drag races because, well, hey…we are called The Moto..WORLD…and I figured I need to get away from just focusing on road racing don’t you think? I lined up a couple of interviews for our podcast, set up some video cast time with a friend on another website, loaded up my ‘studio in a bag’ and off to the drags I went. Oh yeah…Southern California traffic…at the Pomona Drag Strip, 1/4 mile takes a few seconds…on the 210 Freeway that 1/4 mile takes about a day and a half. Maybe I’ll get there before dark.

I go to motorcycle races all the time, usually they are two to three day events and the first day is generally just racers going through practice and qualifying and if there are fans there, it’s because they’re collecting unemployment and have nothing better to do or they’re part of the media…wait, they’re one and the same…Not so with drag racing. I arrived at Pomona Raceway to a full parking lot, stands packed and people walking the pits and vendors row like it was main event day. All I could think was this is very cool, and…it’s only Thursday!!! What is Sunday going to be like?

At most big time motorcycle races you need to buy a pit pass (or trade one back and forth with your friends) to get anywhere near the race bikes…actually seeing the racers is a rare added bonus. Here at the drags, your ticket in put’s you within touching distance of 300 MPH cars, 200 MPH motorcycles and the pilots of these machines. No wonder the fans love it. I was caught up in the whole atmosphere the minute I walked in.

As I walked around looking for my friends, my neck and my camera were getting a serious work out, so much to see and hear. Everytime a dragster was being fired up a crowd would gather, everybody putting their hands over their ears and holding their nose. If you have never been six feet away from the exhaust pipes of a Nitro Methane fuel burning, 7000HP…yes, I said ‘Seven Thousand’… horsepower motor… well, you just haven’t lived…and, now your sinuses are cleared for life.

After wandering, I found the Harley Davidson Screaming Eagle pits but my friends were nowhere to be found…I was a little late…remember LA traffic??…well, I made the best of it and spoke with racer Andrew Hines, son of Vance and Hines performance parts co-founder Byron Hines. The Hines family has quite a history in drag racing. Byron and partner Terry Vance won many National Championships, Byron’s older son Matt won more and now young Andrew is keeping the family dynasty alive. We had a great visit with promises to get the whole family together for a podcast interview.

I couldn’t wait any longer, I had to go over to the track. Ok, it’s only a quarter mile of asphalt…big deal?? Well, yeah it is. I got there in time for Pro Stock Qualifying, Alcohol Qualifying ( by the length of the lines at the Budweiser stands, I think most of the race fans qualified) and the reason I was there…Pro Stock Motorcycles. Walking through the staging lane at Pomona reminded me of the time I had Deja Vu’…Hmmmm…Ive been here before…but last time it was on salt not asphalt. It seems to me that the choice of motorcycle to go fast in a straight line whether it’s the quarter mile or a flying mile, comes down to two…a big Harley or a big Suzuki. I got a chance to speak with pilots of both and the feeling is the same for both…it’s the adrenaline rush baby.

Being a racer, I know the adrenaline rush…you spend days or weeks preparing for a race…the bike, your body, your mind…all you want to do is be on the track. Racing is what you live and breath for, your significant other either embraces it…(read, finances it…), accepts it…(how much was that part??!!) or maybe just tolerates it …(Ok fine go racing just don’t get hurt…) but it’s in our blood and it doesn’t go away. While standing in the staging lane and on the starting line, my heart started racing, my brain was focused and I could feel my clutch hand twitching. God I love racing.

I am not going to include (copyright) detailed descriptions of what it costs to race Formula 1. If you are already not familiar with Formula 1 racing you can go to the sites listed below for more details.

My objective is to get the start-up funding for a Formula 1 team (of if you have other interests, possibly Nascar, Top Fuel Drag Racing, Offshore Powerboats….How much funding is required ? a cost-effective Formula 1 team would require $90Million USD (which would pay for 2 years of racing and 1 year of “start-up” work)…this is very cost-effective considering current budgets for Formula 1 teams…Ferrari wins and at what cost ? $440 Million per year !

Nascar and Drag Racing you are looking at half of that cost ( $45 milion USD ).

Please contact me (so that we can meet in person). novaexpressracing@yahoo.com

What’s my background ? Krazee ! But older and more mature (responsible) now. I have “some” former professional motorsports experience, but it is unrelated to what I want to do now…I am a “poor kid from the other side of the railroad tracks” as far as motorsports is concerned.
