Con un cierto retraso, gracias al cual pudimos llegar a tiempo los rezagados, comenzó ayer el concierto de Project:Komakino en la Sala Ochoymedio. Tal y como se podía intuir por las tres canciones que hay colgadas en su myspace, se trata de un grupo admirador y casi clon (barato) de Joy Division. Desde la estética fría y oscura hasta la forma de comportarse en el escenario recordaban a la mítica banda. Eso si, la actitud del cantante, poco o nada tenía que ver con Ian Curtis, cuyos bailes epilépticos fueron sustituidos por la más absoluta apatía y un gesto impertérrito. En definitiva, a pesar de que sus canciones bien daban para caldear el ambiente, la puesta en escena hizo que acabaran su actuación sin más pena que gloria. Aunque en un principio parecían uno de esos grupos de versiones de algún grupo mítico, finalmente no llegaron ni a eso.

Pocos minutos después estaban sobre el escenario el grupo estrella de la noche, Dragonette, un escenario que se quedo pequeño a su cantante, Martina Sorbara, cuya mera presencia eclipsa todo lo que a su lado esté como si se tratara de un agujero negro. Además, no tardaron ni un momento en contentar y poner de su lado al público, ya que empezaron con I get around, probablemente, su hit más consagrado y perteneciente a su anterior y exitoso álbum, Galore. Poco a poco, en medio de una algarabía creciente, fueron mostrando los temas del nuevo Fixin’ to thrill alternándolos con los grandes temas del anterior disco, así cayeron Competition, Get lucky o Take it like a man. La complicidad entre los miembros de la banda, el buen sonido (a pesar de ser el Ochoymedio), el carisma de Martina junto a sus axilas cuidadosamente descuidadas y el tracklist lleno de hits como ya hemos dicho hicieron que todos los asistentes acabaran encantados del concierto y lamentando que el bis solo comprendiera una canción más.

Dragonette es uno de esos grupos que ganan enteros en directo, porque, aunque sus álbum llenos de pop y dance puedan resultar cansinos e incluso anodinos a partir de la tercera escucha, sus conciertos son más que recomendables, aunque simplemente sea por ver a ese ciclón que es Martina Sorbara.

Pd: Imposible terminar este post sin hacer mención al tremendo parecido físico entre el guitarrista de Dragonette y Ruud Van Nistelrooy.

 I had a great weekend! Friday night I went to a poetry slam (Montreal won and rightfully so) and met some great new folks. Saturday I went out to eat with a friend and hung out and laughed with some writing folks. Now I’m being productive and drinking lots of coffee.

 OOO that is a good weekend. Hmmm I went to the gym, Saturday I got together with Michael and Nicole and we spent the evening listening to “Fixin To Thrill” we also made a little dinner.  It’s just refreshing to meet people who don’t give a fuck and who don’t try to be above you in order to be alluring. She was real. It is rare.

I actually didn’t plan on catching Dragonette’s 1:30 AM set at Santos Party House last week but luckily I decided to sacrifice a few hours of sleep last Thursday night for a thrill. I’ve never written about Dragonette on Tastes Like Caramel before so in an effort to educate myself and TLC’s readers who may not be familiar with Dragonette, I did a little bit of research:

Canada’s Dragonette consists of lead singer Martina Sorbara, guitarist Chris Hugget, producer and bassist Dan Kurtz and drummer Joel Stouffer. They have released two full-length albums 2005’s Galore and this year’s critically-acclaimed Fixin To Thrill, both recorded in London. Dragonette has toured with the likes of New Order, Basement Jaxx and Sugababes!

Having never seen the electro-pop band live before, it was a great introduction to rebelliously see Dragonette perform a late-night gig at Santos on a school night. Fans gobbled up Martina’s exuberance onstage, smiling and dancing her way through a fantastic set clad in awesome latex overalls.

The pleasantly long set covered fan favorites from Galore, Fixin To Thrill and the 2005 self-titled EP before closing with the yet-to-be-released Get Your Titties Off My Things. Remaining tour dates can be seen HERE and more pictures from the show can be seen HERE.

Today while I was busy facebooking people to death, my friend Ashley Morisette, posted a video by Dragonette. How could I forget about Dragonette!?! I have yet to write anything about her. I played her album back to back with Calvin Harris. The perfect mix I tell you. You might know her for the song, I Get Around. If you love it you will also love the remix by Van She Tech. It is amazing!

Dragonette is one of the many groups coming out of Canada. I tell you it is in the water. The band consists of lead singer/song writer Martina Sorbara, bassist and producer Dan Kurtz,  guitarist Chris Hugget, and drummer Joel Stouffer.

Pick up their latest album, Fixin’ to Thrill!

Remixes are either a hit or miss and normally most of them do not do justice to the original song. Some would argue what is the point of remixes if it is just  some mindless beats and a repeat of vocals. But up and coming Dutch dj Bart B More has proven to us that you can remix a song to make it way much better than the original. Infact he made the song turn into a completely different song altogether. Originally a cute little ditty from French dj/producer Martin Solveig featuring the female vocals from fellow Canadian Martina from the group Dragonette (talk about United Nation!), this song was picked by Jean Paul Gaultier to promote his latest Ma Dame fragrance campaign and the video was filmed at Gaultier mansion with a cameo from Gaultier himself.

Bart B More took the cuteness of the song and turn it into this rave of a song complete with hard beats, repeated and extracted verses of the song (but in a good way).  But the winning point of the remix is the excellent synth bassline which is very reminiscing of early 90’s classic Bizarre Inc. “Playing with knives” and to top it off, as the remix suggested, police sirens wailing throughout the remix. So very KLF. If you are longing for some good ole early 90’s rave, check out this remix, find an empty warehouse and start waving your hands up in the air.

Marc & Miguel, The Buffetlibre DJs,  have graced the electronic rumors Inbox with this, their reMix of Dragonette’s ‘Easy’ off of their latest album ‘Fixin’ To Thrill’.

The original is a pretty dark ElectroPop ballad, Buffetlibre bring the darkness back to the dancefloor and mix up the tune into an upbeat, hands in the air, anthem.

Tonight I hopped on the E-train and made my way down to Canal and Lafayette streets to catch Canadian electropop group Dragonette at Santo’s Party House in SoHo.  Picture it… it’s Thursday night and the doors open at 11:00 p.m.  Um, did the promoters know I have a 9:30 client meeting in the morning??  The place is full of club kids so I immediately feel out of place!

You know what, it’s worth it!  I’m immediately taken with Dragonette frontwoman Martina Sorbara when she takes the stage at 1:15 a.m. to “I Get Around.”  Her voice reminds me of Kylie’s, but then again, she has a voice all her own.  Just beautiful.  I’ve been listening to their new album, Fixin’ to Thrill, all week long in anticipation of this show.  They didn’t disappoint.  Maneuvering myself in true CenterOrch fashion, I’m fascinated by the dynamics of Sorbara and her husband, the beautiful Brazilian Dan Kurz.  Both are amazing and clearly adoring of each other.  He’s the music writer.  She writes the lyrics.

Honestly, I don’t know a lot of their earlier material, but the songs off their new album are amazing.  They played just about all my favorites, “Pick Up the Phone” and the title track and concert closer, “Fixin’ to Thrill.”  But my favorites off their new offering are simply pop bliss… “Okay Dolores” and “Big Sunglasses” are the best tracks on Fixin’ to Thrill, if you ask me.  Both BIG crowd pleasers.

At one point Martina lamented her joy of being in New York after sharing that they played to 14 people in Springfield, Missouri.  Well, guess who went to college in Springfield, Mo.???  Your’s truly!!!  I’m impressed they found Springfield… I just hope they weren’t on their way to Branson (just a mere 30 miles south)!  Nope, you’re in New York City now, and Santo’s is packed.   I was lucky to meet Dan Kurz after the show and surprised to hear Martina was sick all night.  The fact I couldn’t tell is a sure sign of a great performer.  I want them to make it big time… Go buy their new album, for sale on iTunes now, you’ll love it!

Of course I did just buy that new wide-angle lens for my beloved Nikon F.  Maybe I’ll just stick with that for a while.  Let’s just look at some Nikon porn.

Anyway as you might be able to guess I’ve been searing all kinds of film lately, and enjoying every minute of it.  I bought a negative scanner so I can dump all my horrible pictures on flickr, but for now I don’t feel too impressed with what’s up there.  Maybe in a moment of drunken arrogance I’ll post a link so the whole wide world can see how rotten I am at focusing in street shots.

Time to finish up my work and head out.  Going to see Dragonette IN PERSON tonight out in Allston.  Also going to try to limit my booze intake to that I don’t drunkenly propose to Martina Sorbara…though I’ve made worse decisions recently.

Fixin To Thrill (Bandroom)

Sounding like a Canadian version of the Rogue Traders, this Toronto outfit (now based in London) play the type of pouty electro-pop often favoured by teenagers, superclubs and mobile phone ads. Singer Martina Sorbara (who seems to share Lady Gaga’s allergy to pants in videos) purrs and poses over fuzzy synth and candy-floss choruses about boys and girls and dancing. Opening title track is all attitude and emptiness, “We Rule The World” sounds like auto-pilot-pop and “Gone Too Far” unforgivably introduces the genre ‘banjo electro’ to the world. There’s redemption in the Annie-esque “Liar” and the sparkly ‘80s pop of “Pick up the Phone” but when Sorbara launches into “Big Sunglasses”, a woeful ode to over-sized shades, you know it’s time to pull the plug on this party.
