O Ryunoken já deu a notícia. Agora é minha vez de falar sobre o evento mais tr00 da video game music – e deixar vocês com mais vontade de ir, eu espero!

Primeiro, vamos recapitular pra quem não está sabendo ainda: sábado agora, dia 21 de novembro, a partir das 17h, no Centro Comunitário da Universidade de Brasília, vai acontecer a primeira edição do Video Games Metal, show musical criado de gamers para gamers, onde as trilhas sonoras dos jogos mais famosos e queridos de todos os tempos serão interpretadas no ritmo do heavy metal.

Quando fiquei sabendo desse evento, há alguns meses, na hora pensei: “Hell, it’s about time!” O Brasil tem excelentes bandas de video game music. E show de video game music faz sucesso por aqui – o VGL, mesmo com a queda de qualidade nos últimos anos, que o diga. Somando dois + dois, o resultado que temos é que demorou pra alguém ter essa ideia de pegar as bandas de video game music brasileiras e fazer um show.

Tiago Battousai, criador, produtor executivo e condutor do Video Games Metal, sonhava em por essa ideia em prática há algum tempo: “A idéia surgiu em 2006. Antes mesmo de eu saber que existia o Video Games Live. Tive essa idéia quando comecei a colecionar músicas de bandas de game metal como MegaDriver, NESkimos, Minibosses, Powerglove e muitas outras. Por que não fazer um show com bandas de Game Metal? Farei! Criei coragem quando meus amigos fundaram a Rockband Game Music – tendo uma banda em Brasília facilitaria bastante.”

Ele poderia ter produzido um show apenas com a Rockband GM. Mas shows de uma banda só de video game music já aconteceram antes. O que ele queria mesmo era fazer algo maior, inédito – um grande evento, com estandes, campeonatos e, é claro, várias bandas de video game music tocando.

Encontrar gente pra tocar no evento foi fácil: “As bandas se empolgaram muito [com a ideia]! Todas elas!”, nos conta Tiago Battousai.  “Eu já tinha contato com as bandas fazia tempo. O Nino MegaDriver, eu o contactei pela primeira vez na época em que ele era o único da banda. Conseguir gente pra tocar foi fácil. A ForceField foi uma banda que nasceu somente para tocar no VGM”, completa.

Porém, nem tudo são flores. “A maior dificuldade é a financeira. Está tudo certo, pronto e planejado. Pagar as contas que é o difícil. Depender de venda de convites antecipados sendo que a maioria compra na véspera é complicado”, afirma Tiago.

E como nós, gamers, devemos entender isso?  Como diriam nossos parceiros do LevelGamer, “vamos lotar Saporra!” Tiago Battousai conta com a gente: “A expectativa é boa! A meta é lotar! A divulgação nas ruas começaram semana passada. Somente com divulgação da internet já foram vendidos mais de 200 ingressos. Agora que começa a vender em grande escala. Lembrando que os convites são limitados.” Não vamos decepcioná-lo, né?

"Metal. The darkest, most brutal genre of all."

Ahh, metal. Where would we be without you? To be honest, metal has been a far more influential genre than a lot of people give it credit for, which is very surprising, considering how silly a genre it can be. At times, it’s multitude of subgenres can make it seem like it has identity issues too. Does it want to be brutal and hard to listen to, or does it want to be soaring and epic? Not to mention the break-off arms of the genre, like Industrial and 80s glam metal. Still, there seems to be a consensus around a group of fans as to what makes “true metal” and Gama Bomb seem to hit this, with a big dollop of fun.

Ok, so what should “true metal” have? For this, we look back to the 70s, and bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. Dark, fantastical themes, soaring vocals reaching into the giddy heights of falsetto, massive guitar distortion and a heavy bass presence all make metal the genre we recognise. Gama Bomb have all this in droves, and combine it all with the brutal speed of thrash.

One thing that turns a lot of people off metal is the perceived seriousness of it all. Metal is seen as a big, boys only club, where blood, death and destruction are discussed at eardrum destroying volume. Gama Bomb, on the other hand, are anything but serious (but may still break your eardrums). I could try and describe their brand of fun to you, but just let me give you a sample of their song titles, and some choice lyrics from them and let you work it out for yourself. It’s better this way, I promise:

Three Witches: and now you’ve no balls/eyeballs that is

Now, tell me you can take this band seriously. Don’t worry if you can’t, I very much doubt they want to be taken seriously. This is an album of silly fun, playing on the stereotypical expectations of metal. Musically, it’s not amazing, but very little metal ever is. For instance, I’m pretty sure this whole album is in the same key, as there have been numerous times when I’ve not realised when one song ended and another began. Also, there’s not as much of the guitar virtuosity some other bands have either. Though it isn’t completely absent, as seen in songs such as Polterghost, for instance, it is a lot more subdued than hat you would get from power metal bands such as Dragonforce. The rest of the band seems to be there just to play bloody fast, and create a good mood to hold up the really enjoyable narratives of the vocals. If you love metal, you’ll love this album, so feel free to add a point to my score at the bottom of this review for yourselves, metalheads. If your not a metal fan, it’s still worth a look, even just for a good laugh at the sillyness of it all.

DRAGONFORCE have their first two studio albums – ‘Valley Of The Damned’ & ‘Sonic Firestorm’ – re-issued on February 22nd 2010 via Spinefarm Records UK.

So, this morning I was reading the comments on metalsucks.com, as I so frequently do, I caught this one that really pissed me off.  I mean, most of the comments on there piss me off due to how retarded they are, but this one was so excessively stupid that I felt it warranted a blog post.  If only because there are a lot of retards out there who make essentially the same statement any time someone tells them that their favourite band sucks ass.  The shitty band in question, however, was Mudvayne – a band I haven’t given a titty fuck about in a long-ass time.

A lot of people are criticizing this. Where’s your huge selling albums? Where’s your tasty, revolutionary riffs? Where’s your nasty chops? Really I think this is a sick song and if you don’t like it then that’s great. But don’t act like you’re the be all and end all in the taste of Metal. You’re just some guy or chick writing in anonymity. Silly internet people and their overblown sense of self worth. Go rice.

Now, I hear this from a lot of people any time you criticise their favourite mediocre band.  It doesn’t matter which band.  But more often than not, it’ll be a band with younger, less intelligent audiences.  Like Dragonforce.  Or better yet, Slayer. God forbid you ever say something slightly negative about Slayer.  You will quickly feel the rabid wheezing fury of a fat rapist.  Truthfully, this mindset bothers me.  Albeit, not to the point where I will call you a faggot and threaten to kill you for disagreeing with me, – although I probably should since you, in all likelihood, aren’t very smart – but it is disconcerting, (and really drives home the point that “fan” is short for “fanatic”.)

If you pay close attention to the above post, you will notice that he has essentially said two things:

1. If you don’t sell as many records as a band, you are not allowed to criticize them.
2. If you lack the technical proficiency to play their music, you are not allowed to criticize them.

The latter of which, you will hear most often when talking about a shitty metal band like Dragonforce.  If you call Dragonforce a steaming pile of shitty shit, retarded 14 year old kids will come out and tell you “YOU SUCK DICK I HATE YOU DRAGONFORCE OWNS ALOL!!!11…11ONE!!!111 lolololololol THROUGH THE FIRE AND FLAMES FTW!!!!!!”

or “You guys are just jelous cause you cant play guitar for shit!!”

or the great challenge: “When you can play at least one of their songs then you can talk, Suck it.”

And gosh darn it!  “Some people like plain old good guitar, with a positive message.”  (well, I can’t argue with that, Pappy.)

Who gives a fuck about these cunts, right?  They’re just dorks on the internet.  You know, it’s just their opinion.  It just bothers me to no end that some turd feels that because I haven’t wasted my life learning terrible solos from a band that isn’t worth caring about, that I’m suddenly not entitled to feel a shitty band is shit, let alone talk about why they blow ass.

But it’s not simply to say that I’m not allowed to talk shit about Mudvayne or Dragonforce.  My opinion is automatically irrelevant because they have jumped to the conclusion that I simply can’t play as well as them.  Regardless of whether or not it’s true, the fact that my technical proficiency on an instrument is the watershed as to whether or not I can criticize a band is mind boggling.  By this logic, the only person who’s allowed to critique any band whatsoever is fucking Yngwie Malmsteen.

Now, I want you to sit there and think about that for a moment if you’re one of those people who’ve ever told someone that their opinion regarding a band was worthless if they couldn’t play to that standard, and I want you to realize how horribly stupid and elitist of a notion this is.  More than that, I want you to consider what kind of a world we would be living in if Yngwie Malmsteen determined what you could and couldn’t listen to.

Technical ability should ultimately have absolutely no bearing on someone’s opinion.  Yes, it can help you attain a certain appreciation of some things like free jazz or metal that you might not have had before.  But you don’t have to be a musical genius to know what you like and you don’t have to play guitar very well to realize how robotic and soulless Dragonforce is.

Now, when someone brings up the notion of record sales, without realizing it, this person has automatically placed a monetary value on music itself.  To wit: if you ain’t sellin’ shit, get the fuck out.  These people will undoubtedly cite such AWESOME examples as Metallica’s Master of Puppets or Guns & Roses’ Appetite For Destruction as forms of superior quality music!  I mean, just look at how many albums each has sold!

And then you look at the best-selling albums of all time to realize what a moron you are.  Oh boy, would you look at that – Appetite sold 28 million albums!  Not too shabby!  Did I say “not too shabby”?  I should have said “well that’s toasted shit in comparison to either one of the Backstreet Boys’ first two albums!”  And shit, why even bother with owning The Beatles’ Abbey Road when according to record sales, their 1999 greatest hits package has sold far more copies and is therefore superior in every way, shape, and form?  And why are you even bothering listening to such tripe as Led Zeppelin’s IV when you could be engaging with a real work of art like Thriller which is exactly three times better!

Just because it disappoints me to no end that people routinely pass up what I consider real, compelling art for trite shit like Nickelback, it doesn’t give me the right to force my taste onto anyone else.  Ultimately, I’m not here to tell you what is undeniably good.  That’s not my choice to make for you.  It wouldn’t be right.  All I do is offer an opinion with what I attempt to make as compelling an argument as possible.  In the end, however, if you sincerely looooooove a band and want to suck their cocks after all the arguments I make as to why they fellate frozen logs of feces, fucking go nuts.

Music is solely an individual experience.  While it might be a universal language, the subtleties of it can be debated all day.  So if Dragonforce legitimately speaks to you as a person and touches something deep within your soul, embrace that and hold it dear, because it’s something special that can only be taken away from you if you let it.

Just as long as you don’t make me listen to it.

«A través del fuego y de las llamas.» En castellano no suena tan bien como decir Through the Fire and Flames. Esta canción, desde la primera vez que la escuché (gracias al Guitar Hero) me ha maravillado/entusisamado/apasionado/dejado con la boca abierta…, y así podría seguir. En definitiva: una obra maestra.

Y es que, como dice un buen amigo mío (al cual aprovecho para mandarle un saludo, él ya sabe quién es), “esta es la canción que cuando llega en el mp3 nunca la paso“. A quien le guste de verdad sabe de lo que estoy hablando, pues a mí se me eriza el bello cada vez que suenan los primeros acordes, los solos y, sobre todo, ese final apoteosico.

No hay obra sin autor; un grupo, en este caso: Dragonforce, los padres del Extreme Power Metal. Estos “magos” de la música han alcanzado una velocidad increíble en sus canciones, no dejando atrás a lo épico e innovando cuando añaden efectos de sonido, añadidos, en gran parte, por los dos guitarristas, Herman Li y Sam Totman. La guinda en la rapidez de sus composiciones la pone Dave Mackintosh, el batería y sus, a veces, inhumanos blast beats. Al bajo, Frédéric Leclercq y a los teclados, Vadim Pruzhanov, acaban de darle el toque de distinción a sus canciones. Y para terminar, el vocalista, ZP Theart, que aporta una voz extremadamente adaptable que les viene como anillo al dedo en todas las composiciones.

En fin, ya vale de cháchara, creo que he dejado bien claro que son los que más me gustan. Bien pues, os dejo con la mejor de sus canciones (que he estado escuchando misntras escribía esto, para darme más motivacion, jeje), y como dicen:

The shred machines of DragonForce and DonkeyBox

Besides the weird names which involve an animal and the even weirder reason for name capitalisation, these two bands have more in common than you would think!

Yes they are both rock bands, yes they are loud..but the bands have almost crossed paths once on the same stage believe it or not.

It was the summer of 2001 when lead guitarist and drummer from DonkeyBox popped into the Imperial College Jemfest and on that small stage there was this guitarist dude who was playing some mildmelting guitar solos on his Ibanez guitar.

It was all about the Ibanez guitars that little event and those guys at the end seemed the perfect headline act.

Fast forward about 3 years and omg these guys have changed name slightly to DragonForce and a force to be reckoned with, they have made it in mainstream rock music!

On that night we did not gig with DragonForce, we hadn’t been formed and they had only just started out. The organiser of the Jemfest had his own band on stage as well, Cereal Killer. About a year later when DonkeyBox formed we finally gigged with Cereal Killer as well. This way we had gigged with a band that had gigged with DragonForce.

Techno and trance, along with hiphop and rnb, are my least favourite music genres. Other than that, I’ve got to say I enjoy all sorts of music. Beethoven, Dragonforce, Sigur Rós, Donkeyboy, Thomas Dybdahl, Metallica, the Postal Service. Just to mention some examples. And techno/trance and hiphop/rnb doesn’t amuse me. Normally. No rules without exceptions, I find that a couple of Beyonce’s songs are nice. And – don’t fall off your chair – Tiësto. Which leads me to the point. Only once before has he managed to get my attention, with his remix of Adagio for Strings, and I must admit that it was mostly because I like the original. But this time he’s paired with Jónsi from Sigur Rós. I only randomly noticed in one of his TV ads to promote his new CD, and checked it out. And I like it. YES! I like it. David admitted it’s “not bad” – but only after his little “Julie-loves-Tiësto”-dance. Well, I didn’t see the dance, cause it was over MSN, but I can just picture him. ¬_¬ Anyways, have the song.

I was stopped by a wasted man while on my way home from the university the other day. I could see that he had targeted me from a distance, and I figured I might aswell play along. He kept asking me if he could ask me something. Yes, I said. But I could not for the love of god (or whoever) understand what he was trying to ask me. He grabbed my bag and tried to get closer, but he let go when I asked him to. For every step he took towards me, I took two back. He was harmless. Kept telling me how beautiful I am, that he drinks too much and that he needs to speak with his daughter. And I kept telling him to go home and go to bed, and to contact his daughter. Then he grabbed my hand and told me it had been nice speaking to me. Again I had to tell him to let go, and that I was gonna go home. He even asked me if he could see me again, which I gently turned down with a “no.”

I miss David at the moment, feeling a little off. Helpless and lonely. Lonely by choice mind you, I actively push everyone away to a safe distance. And if they get too close, I take a step back. Been doing it my whole life – and even though David understands me better than anyone and see right through me at times, even he doesn’t know everything that’s going on. It’s better that way. I relax more when I don’t have to worry about everyone else.

Other than that, my economy is going straight to hell. Optimistic as I am (HAHAha!). I’m anxious about Christmas and how I’m gonna afford it all, and I feel pushed into a corner (for those of you who haven’t read any of my previous posts, I hate Christmas with passion). Last Christmas cost me a fortune, and it feels like a waste. Although watching the people I care about being happy is nice. I have no clue at all what to get David. Whenever he wants something, he just buys it. So I have to think of something he hasn’t thought of himself. And I’d say my chances of success are about 15%. I was hoping it’d be a few more years before I buy him socks and ties. And I’m positive my mother will phone me, begging me for advice on what to get for him. And I also know that my father wont give a flying fudge about any of this.

Anyways! I should probably do some reading. Soon. Lacking a little inspiration, to put it lightly. Waiting for it to wash over me.

As of this writing, I have just finished a 23 hour writing spree with Jez Lucas, my newest workmate and good old friend. As of today,  I consider myself well-initiated on my newfound role as an outsourced SEO content writer.

No sleep since last night. We started around 10pm and I have just ended now, 9:15pm. 10 articles on a topic we knew absolutely nothing about.

Now beneath my battered brain cells, red eyes and caffeine-saturated body there lies a smile – a smile that depicts a kind of happiness that I haven’t felt in the longest time.

Whoops! Before I go on, let me zoom out and take a look at the bigger picture: last week.

SUMMARY: In the blackest plains of hell’s domain, through the fire and flames I carried on.

True, that is a broken excerpt from a song by Dragonforce, but I feel that right now those are the best words to describe what I had just gone through.

It all started friday last last week, when a deadline was given to me by my office where I work full-time. It was a hard deadline – pretty difficult as I really wasn’t used to this kind of work. But I needed to. I wanted to. I felt it. (but just a bit) It occured to me that I needed to do this job so I could move on to MY main project in our company. But I won’t go there. (it’s a surprise)

I didn’t meet the deadline.

I’m fortunate enough i guess, that the person who put me in charge of the project was kind enough to give me some slack. So it was that Wednesday that ANOTHER thing happened.

It is this two-headed creature named diarrhea that loomed over me. Moreover, his gremlin cohorts must have sabotaged the men’s cr in my office that SAME DAY as well.

Needless to say I retreated.

To be greeted by yet another deadline – the one I just finished TODAY.

The deadline was last Thursday – so I failed two deadlines this week.

And yet somehow, someway in all Hallow’s Eve. I got em done. I pulled through.

This was the week that I failed my first deadline in the office.

This was the week that sickness hit me in the worst possible time and place.

This was the week that I failed a second deadline.

This was the week that I barely slept – and didn’t sleep at all.

This was the week that messed up my personal life in ways I decline to mention here.

But this was the week I pulled through anyway.

and #%^%^%$^ IT if it THIS wasn’t THE BEST WEEK SINCE I STARTED WORKING LAST JUNE!

Because this was the week.. that I discovered what it was like to fulfill myself again through good ol’ hard work.

Kann gut grölen: Bassist von Dragonforce

lesen des vierten Bandes “Mach´s gut und Danke für den Fisch” der “Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis”-”Trilogie in fünf Teilen” unterbrach, um mit mir am Abend nach Hannover zu reisen und das Kulturzentrum zu besuchen. Warum? Natürlich weil in der “60er Jahre – Halle” Dragonforce auftreten würde!

Der weg mit Auto, Bahn, S-Bahn und zu Fuß dorthin war kurz vor dem Ziel etwas ziellos, aber durch hilfreiche Tipps der Anwohner konnte wir den Ort des Geschehens schließlich doch im dunkeln finden.

Die Location war überraschend klein, aber dafür konnte man den Protagonisten auch sehr nahe kommen und beinahe die Hand schütteln. Nach der mittelmäßigen Vorband aus Würzburg und der Umbaupause wurde es dann auch voll (ich schätze 196 schwarzgekleidete männliche und 4 schwarzgekleidete weibliche Metalfans + eine in Leder gehüllte Metaloma!) und die sechköpfige Truppe von Dragonforce kamen auf die Bühne. Keyboarder mit eigenwilliger Hiphop-Kleidung sprangen dabei ebenso ins Auge wie das ständige “Fuck you motherfuckers” ins Ohr, das der Frontmann liebevoll ins Mikro brüllte, um das Publikum anzuheizen (oder einfach zu beleidigen).

Wasserflasche und beglückte alle Nicht-Headbanger mit einer kleinen Erfrischung.

Der Sound war übrigens wirklich laut und damit meine ich LAUT, für meinen Geschmack (und an der Quadratmeterzahl der Halle gemessen) schon zu laut. Vorallem beim Einsatz der Hi Hats und hohen Tönen rasselten einem die Ohren. Aber die Musik war dafür nicht schlecht, ich (er)kannte zwar nur ein einziges Lied, aber war etwas neidisch auf den Keyboarder, der neben einer (wahrscheinlich sauteuren) KeyTAR auch noch ein fettes (und wahrscheinlich sauteures) KeyBOARD und so eine (megasauteure) Antenne, die ein elektromagnetisches Feld zur Soundmodulation erzeugt, als Arbeitsgerät zur Verfügung hatte.

Lustig anzusehen waren die kleinen gespielten Rangeleien der beiden Gitarristen und dem Bassisten sowie deren Grimassen.

Das ganze war dann gegen 23.30 Uhr vorbei und FE und ich verpassten leider unseren Zug um 23.59 Uhr, woraufhin wir ganze 5 Stunden und 46 Minuten (!) auf dem geisterhaft leeren Bahnhof die Nacht verbringen mussten. An richtigen Schlaf war ohne richtige Schlafmöglichkeit nicht zu denken und für ein 4 Sterne-Hotel oder ein“Stundenhotel für Pärchen” mangelte es uns

leider an Geld / der richtigen  sexuellen  Orientierung und so saßen wir in einem Warteraum in ekligen gelben und blauen Licht und spielten Mario Kart, guckten Videos auf dem Handy und versuchten irgendwie einzuschlafen (was nur begrenzt klappte.)

Jedenfalls waren wir dann gegen 6.30 Uhr oder so wieder bei Andreas zu Hause, ich ließ mich ins Bett fallen und schlief erstmal bis 14 Uhr.

UDIMA jetzt zu dritt + Drachenkraft in Hannover

Endlich habe ich mal wieder Zeit gefunden zu bloggen, also keine Zeit verschwenden und die letzten Tage “rewü” passieren lassen:

UDIMA ist ab sofort offiziell kein Duo mehr , sondern ein starkes Trio! Ja, richtig gehört; wir haben einen neuen Bassisten dazugewonnen, der auf den Namen Tristan hört (einen Bandnamen will er sich noch überlegen). Letztes Wochenende haben wir uns das erste Mal getroffen, nachdem Tristan uns angeschrieben hatte (ich hatte völlig vergessen dass noch ein Zettel von uns im “Musicus” hing ^^) und gleich losgerockt.
Tristan ist größer als ich und sein Bass ist länger als die Gitarre von Andreas und obendrein sieht er auch noch besser aus!
Trotzdem freue ich mich riesig, dass man UDIMA jetzt als “richtige” Band bezeichnen kann. Erste Fotos von unserem Treffen und einen neuen Song findet Ihr im UDIMA-Blog.

Fatal Error hat mich gefragt, ob ich mit ihm morgen auf das Dragonforce Konzert in Hannover gehe. Da sag ich natürlich nicht nein, auch wenn ich vorher nicht wirklich deren Musik gehört habe und Dragonforce ja bekanntermaßen einen zweigeteilte Meinungen hervorruft, aber  was FE und Tristan gut finden, kann so schlecht ja nicht sein

Gibt´s sonst noch was zu sagen? … Mario Kart DS macht immer noch Bock!

How to Train Your Dragon is an upcoming computer-animated film based on the 2003 book of that same title. The film stars the voice talents of Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Gerard Butler, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Craig Ferguson. The film is scheduled to be released on March 26, 2010. This is also the second movie Jonah Hill and Christopher Mintz-Plasse will be together in since 2007’s Superbad.

Plot

The film is set in a mythical world of vikings and dragons. The story centers around a viking teenager named Hiccup (Jay Baruchel), who lives on the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. The teen’s smarts and offbeat sense of humor is disliked by his tribe and its chief, Hiccup’s father. However, when Hiccup is included in Dragon Training with the other viking teens, he sees his chance to prove he has what it takes to be a fighter. But when he encounters (and ultimately befriends) an injured dragon, his world is flipped upside down, and Hiccup is forced to choose between the person he is and the person the tribe expects him to be.

Cast and characters

• Jay Baruchel as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third – The main character of the film and son of chief Stoick the Vast. According to his cousin Snotlout, he is nothing like his father, is not suited to be the future chief, and is wimpy. Hiccup finds and befriends an injured dragon named Toothless, bringing into conflict his new friendship and the village’s tradition of dragon-fighting.

• Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast – The short-tempered chief of the Hairy Hooligan tribe. He hopes his son will mature up and become strong enough to be chief one day, but it does not seem to go well for him.

• Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fishlegs – Fishlegs is Hiccup’s best friend who does not seem to be good at any of the subjects that the teachers in the Viking training program teach. Fishlegs is nervous and frightened to do perilous things at times, but remains Hiccup’s best friend. He owns a dragon named Horrorcow.

• Jonah Hill as Snotface Snotlout – The son of Hiccup’s uncle, making him and Hiccup cousins. Snotlout hopes to be the chief one day, but Hiccup is the heir (in fact, if something happened to Hiccup, he’d be next in line for the job), which has spawned a hatred between them. He is strong and muscular, and is good at being a Viking. Snotlout owns a dragon named Fireworm.

• America Ferrera as Astrid.

• Craig Ferguson as Gobber the Belch, the head teacher in charge of the Viking Initiation Program. He’s loud, short-tempered, and finds everyone in his program pathetic.

ladies & gentlemen i give you:  METALLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!

2 subgenres in particular, power metal & viking metal.  viking metal is self-explanatory, and power metal is basically the child of thrash and speed metal, infused with lyrical obsession of all things that got you beat up in high school:  dungeons & dragons, lord of the rings (before it was cool), fantasy novels, and the like, sung typically very highly (i.e. “ahhhhhhhhAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”).  power metal has been around for a while, but got a little bit of mainstream attention with the success (relatively speaking, they’re far from platinum!) of dragonforce, based highly on their being featured in guitar hero.  dragonforce get some flack from the hardcore fanbase of the scene, they’ve been called “nintendo metal” based on the video game sound of their guitars & keyboards, but i think they pwn.  then again, metal is not my passion, so perhaps that’s why  either way, here’s a hilarious yet awesome (3 words that go together very well when talking about power metal videos & lyrics) video, “operation ground & pound”.

onto the viking metal!  this subgenre has its roots in the same place as black metal, not only in that both come from the same regional area (scandinavia) but both are credited with having their beginning with the band bathory.  the band’s 1990 album hammerheart was the first viking metal record.  viking metal ranges in sound much more, as the common basis for the bands isn’t the sound or style but lyrical topics that focus on norse mythology & the viking age.  and now we get to celebrate with 5 videos that do thor proud.  beginning with, from the faroe islands…
