Missed a day. Here’s a poem I wrote earlier…..

As wealthy as anyone but not on the rich list
Been beaten many times but never been on a hit list
Dark and handsome but never been sun kissed
Taught less is more but none, the less

     (Repeat)

We acquiesce to societal positions
Throughout literary incisions and television
The same people that will tell your vision
The missionary position is a new brand of religion
Will tell you discipline your children and we’ll put you in prison
While Jews, Muslims and Christians argue who’s bigger
Society’s stuck in the Titanic singing Man in the mirror

Seems we’ve gone to pot
Legally administered
By primed ministers and prime ministers
Primed to administer crimes that are sinister
Praying the fat lady will sing while worshipping ladies that are skinnier
Religious freedoms getting smaller than the island of Sardinia

I said I’m peculiar they told me don’t be Sicilian
But people watch people like they were reptilian
How can people talk about reality through the eyes of a chameleon
Hypocrite, hypocrite dare I voice my opinion
Animals rule the planet I thought man was given dominion

Claim Title: Longest Time To Remember A Song You Had Forgotten
Country: United Kingdom
City/Town/Village: PRESTON
Date of attempt: 14/ 09/ 2009
Record Details:

Hi there!

How you doing?

I don’t know if you remember me, but I submitted a record claim a few years ago; Longest Time to Get a Joke, (‘where’s the soap’, as opposed to ‘wears the soap’? It wasn’t very good).

You didn’t accept it.

But, don’t worry. I’ve got another. It’s a whopper. You’re going to love it; The Longest Time To Remember A Song That You Had Forgotten. What do you think? Good, isn’t it?

Anyway, here’s the thing; when my mate Ed and I were around six years old, we had a band called The Brats. I know, it sounds like we’d be bloody fantastic but, trust me, we weren’t. Anyway, last week, (on the 14th) I was in the kitchen, I might have been unblocking the sink, though I’ve got a feeling toast was involved somehow. I’m not sure. Look, if it’s really important, let me know and I’ll have a good old think. Anyway, the point is, I started humming a song that Ed and I had written in The Brats! Ah ha! I mean, after a gap of thirty years of not knowing the song at all! That’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? I mean, I bet no one has ever, ever forgotten and then remembered a song after such a lengthy period of time. Well, obviously they haven’t, or I wouldn’t have the World Record for it, would I?

Anyway, I know how important authentication is to you Cats so, the other night, I was in the pub with Ed, and I started to sing the song, and he agreed; that was the song that I’d forgotten that we’d written in The Brats that I’d now remembered and, yes, it probably was The Longest Time To Remember A Song That You Had Forgotten, ever.

So, do I get the record?

Incidentally, if Ed submits a rival record claim, can I just say that, yes, whilst he did remember the song when I sang it, (which, technically, means that he’d forgotten it for two days longer than I had) he only remembered it when I sang it to him, and not independently. So I don’t think that should count. Just to be sure, if you do go with Ed on this, can I still have the record for the Longest Unsupported Act Of Remembering A Song After You’d Forgotten It? Which, I think, is more impressive.

Anyway, there you go. Thirty Years to remember a song I’d forgotten. Can I get the World Record now, please?

Thanks!

Simon

PS: The song was called ‘Thunder and Lightening’. It involved the Battle of Hastings. I’m not sure why.

Dear Mr Simon Cordall,

Thank you for sending us the details of your recent record attempt for ‘Longest Time To Remember A Song You Had Forgotten’. We are afraid to say that we are unable to accept this as a Guinness World Record.

We receive over 60,000 enquiries a year from which only a small proportion are approved by our experienced researchers to establish new categories. These are not ‘made up’ to suit an individual proposal, but rather ‘evolve’ as a result of international competition in a field, which naturally accommodates superlatives of the sort that we are interested in. We think you will appreciate that we are bound to favour those that reflect the greatest interest.

Guinness World Records has absolute discretion as to which Guinness World Record applications are accepted and our decision is final. Guinness World Records may at its discretion and for whatever reason identify some records as either no longer monitored by Guinness World Records or no longer viable.

As your record application has not been accepted, Guinness World Records is in no way associated with the activity relating to your record proposal and we in no way endorse this activity. If you choose to proceed with this activity then this is will be of your own volition and at your own risk.

Once again thank you for your interest in Guinness World Records.

Yours sincerely,

We might gain a strip of parking space, in the bargain. In Karolbagh, New Delhi, a massive drain – gundha nullah - used to run through a dense residential area till the late 50s. They covered it with concrete slabs, and converted the reclaimed space into a make-shift neighbourhood market .

I think this is the perfect way to find multiple functions for kitchen tools and appliances. This public art piece stands in front of New Seasons Market on SE Division & SE 20th. The top piece is a drain spout for the rain run-off from the roof.

The kitchen sink drains are used for the eyes, forks for eye lashes, and the head is a coffee pot.

I especially love the toaster oven used for her purse.

The best part about this public art piece is that it’s used as a rain run-off that spills into a bioswale. These northwesterners are geniuses!

Firstly, an unrelated note here. I know I have neglected this blog for a long time, and I really do regret it. I will try harder from now on. Oh, and my main blog is here, so you might want to take a look.

My last post in my main blog was about iGoogle (Google’s customizable page). I use the tea house theme for my own iGoogle, which I think is wonderful because it changes all the time. I love foxes and the illustration of this particular fox is amazingly cute. Plus it changes during the day. You can see the different illustrations of the upper bar during the different times of the day in the post on my main blog. You might have noticed the spirits there at 03:14 who eat the oranges which are offerings, they are some kind of a Yōkai which are a class of preternatural creatures in Japanese folklore ranging from the evil oni (ogre) to the mischievous kitsune (fox) or snow woman Yuki-onna.

Here are some Yōkai images that were illustrated during the Edo period. They are ukiyo-e prints, which are Japanese woodblock prints or paintings.

Below is a Kappa, which is a type of water sprite found in Japanese folklore.

Below, there are images of Tengu (天狗?, “heavenly dogs”) which are a class of supernatural creatures found in Japanese folklore, art, theater, and literature. They are one of the best known yōkai (monster-spirits) and are sometimes worshipped as Shinto kami (revered spirits or gods). Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon (Tiangou), the tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics. They appear in the children’s story Banner in the sky when the main character trips over one and falls off the face of the mountain. The earliest tengu were pictured with beaks, but this feature has often been humanized as an unnaturally long nose, which today is practically the tengu’s defining characteristic in the popular imagination.

Buddhism long held that the tengu were disruptive demons and harbingers of war. Their image gradually softened, however, into one of protective, if still dangerous, spirits of the mountains and forests. Tengu are associated with the ascetic practice known as Shugendō, and they are usually depicted in the distinctive garb of its followers, the yamabushi.

To add some more differentiation to Yokai, there are also my favorite types, the Kitsune and the Yuki-onna:

Kitsune, 狐, きつね is the Japanese word for fox. Foxes are a common subject of Japanese folklore; kitsune usually refers to them in this context. Stories depict them as intelligent beings and as possessing magical abilities that increase with their age and wisdom. Foremost among these is the ability to assume human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others—as foxes in folklore often do—other stories portray them as faithful guardians, friends, lovers, and wives.

Foxes and human beings lived in close proximity in ancient Japan; this companionship gave rise to legends about the creatures. Kitsune have become closely associated with Inari, a Shinto kami or spirit, and serve as his messengers. This role has reinforced the fox’s supernatural significance. The more tails a kitsune has—they may have as many as nine—the older, wiser, and more powerful it is. Because of their potential power and influence, some people make offerings to them as to a deity.

Yuki Onna (雪女, snow woman) is a spirit or yōkai in Japanese folklore. She is a popular figure in Japanese animation, manga, and literature.

Yuki-onna appears on snowy nights as a tall, beautiful woman with long hair. Her inhumanly pale or even transparent skin makes her blend into the snowy landscape (as famously described in Lafcadio Hearn’s Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things). She sometimes wears a white kimono, but other legends describe her as nude, with only her face and hair standing out against the snow. Despite her inhuman beauty, her eyes can strike terror into mortals. She floats across the snow, leaving no footprints (in fact, some tales say she has no feet, a feature of many Japanese ghosts), and she can transform into a cloud of mist or snow if threatened.

Some legends say the Yuki-onna, being associated with winter and snowstorms, is the spirit of someone who perished in the snow. She is at the same time beautiful and serene, yet ruthless in killing unsuspecting mortals. Until the 18th century, she was almost uniformly portrayed as evil. Today, however, stories often color her as more human, emphasizing her ghost-like nature and ephemeral beauty.

In many stories, Yuki-onna appears to travelers trapped in snowstorms, and uses her icy breath to leave them as frost-coated corpses. Other legends say she leads them astray so they simply die of exposure. Other times, she manifests holding a child. When a well-intentioned soul takes the “child” from her, they are frozen in place. Parents searching for lost children are particularly susceptible to this tactic. Other legends make Yuki-onna much more aggressive. In these stories, she often invades homes, blowing in the door with a gust of wind to kill residents in their sleep (Some legends require her to be invited inside first.)

What Yuki-onna is after varies from tale to tale. Sometimes she is simply satisfied to see a victim die. Other times, she is more vampiric, draining her victims’ blood or “life force.” She occasionally takes on a succubus-like manner, preying on weak-willed men to drain or freeze them through sex or a kiss.

Like the snow and winter weather she represents, Yuki-onna has a softer side. She sometimes lets would-be victims go for various reasons. In one popular Yuki-onna legend, for example, she sets a young boy free because of his beauty and age. She makes him promise never to speak of her, but later in life, he tells the story to his wife who reveals herself to be the snow woman. She reviles him for breaking his promise, but spares him again, this time out of concern for their children (but if he dares mistreat their children, she will return with no mercy. Luckily for him, he is a loving father). In a similar legend, Yuki-onna melts away once her husband discovers her true nature.

In case you aren’t aware, having vertical sleeve gastrectomy (or the other bariatric surgeries), you have a drain put in to allow excess fluid to escape. Normally, you have this when you go home for a couple days. Brenda did so well that her drain was removed before she even went home. Yeah! Hope Jolene and I are as lucky!

Gas Hot Water heaters

Why do my Polite light keep going out ?
1. Check to see if the gas is on at the Water Heater and out side meter (easy over look)
2. Could be a bad thermo coupling
3. Thermostat control valve malfunctioning
4. If the Hot Water Heater flue pipeis connected to the same main flue pipe
That the furnace is hook to. When the furnace kicks on
It can blow out the polite light with back pressure.
5. Water heater in a very hot place. This is some thing that happens
in some parts of Texas like Houston. Where the hot water heater are install
In the attic. The attic can get very hot so hot that it well shut off the
hot water heater. The newer Hot Water Heaters that they have out
Today have a safety device that will cut off the hot water heater completely
Just in case it over heats for your safety. The temperatures in the attic can easy
Assed the 200 or more degrees and the water heater will shut down at around 160 Degrees.
Some hot water heater Manufacture will tell you these hot water heater are not design for the
Attic. But luck has it that some Manufacture will send you out a part that will over ride the attic
Heat and keep your hot water heater functioning. If you have this problem look on the side of your
Hot Water Heater and get the 1-800 Number give them a call and the manufactory will help you.

Not Getting enough hot water
1. Dip tub inside Hot Water Heater is broken off.
2. Thermostat control valve malfunctioning
3. Very old water heater with calcium built up inside (replace Water Heater)

Hot Water Heater making Loud popping Noise
1. To much calcium built in hot water heater
( You can flush the Hot Water Heater out, But that not a guarantee fix
And can be a difficult job. Save Time have it replace)

So this is what the sink in my bathroom looks like.

See that water?

Well, it’s stuck there. I was soaking a sweatshirt I spilled tomato sauce on (’cause that’s just how I roll) and filled up the sink, let it soak, took out the sweatshirt (the tomato stain came out…at least I can do something right) and went to drain the sink.

And nothing happened! The little plunger thing comes all the way out when you pull up on it and it just falls all the way to the bottom when you let go. A.k.a., my sink won’t drain.

So I consulted my trusty home repair books (The Hip Girl’s Handbook for Home, Car, and Money Stuff and Dare To Repair: A Do-It-Herself Guide to Fixing (Almost) Anything In The Home)…and…no dice. I guess a broken sink drain plunger thingy falls into the (Almost) category.

So now I’m stuck with a bunch of water in my sink because I’m cannot ask someone to help me drain my sink! Please. How embarrassing is that? At some point I probably need to deal with this.

Maybe the water will just evaporate.

In November of 2006, I decided to climb Mt.Rainier.

Given that I have never climbed a mountain, my first and only concern was ensuring that I was physically strong enough to reach the summit. Thus, over the subsequent six months I practiced climbing stairs in local arenas, walked for miles in the darkness of winter, and eventually walked thirteen miles with a loaded backpack with forty pounds of weight. In May of 2007, feeling confident in my physical ability, I packed my gear and headed to Seattle, Washington where I was to meet up with other climbers at the Alpine Ascents office.

I arrived fairly early to the planning session, and given the few climbers who were already there, the relative “intimacy” of the environment helped boost my confidence and comfort level. Interestingly enough, this level of comfort remained fairly static until three new team members arrived fairly late in the session. In retrospect, the combination of their collective personality along with the seeming “collapse” of the team dynamic led to a rather abrupt decline in self-confidence.

During the van ride to the mountain, I also noticed that I was becoming somewhat withdrawn from the group. Being consciously aware of this, I took steps to “return” to my original self and was able to gradually interact with other team members without any problems. However, it was at the first camp (Camp Muir – elevation 10,188 feet) where things started to become much more challenging for me. Granted, the physical undertaking to climb ten-thousand feet was both physically and mentally draining, but the real struggle involved not my legs or body, but my mind. Even though I was with approximately ten other climbers, I felt extremely isolated and alone.

It was only after the climb where I reflected why my primary barrier to reaching the summit on Rainier was not physical, but mental.

A person’s mental state is influenced by a wide range of factors – energy level, family history, personal experiences, etc. – but at it’s core is one’s personality. Everyone knows fundamentally who they are, but exploring the underlying facets through a formal personality test can further expand one’s awareness of their modes of operation and what they can do to bridge connections with others. A common and fairly reliable test is known as Myers Briggs, or as it is more commonly known – the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

When I first took the MBTI back in 2000, I was amazed with the results – the correlation to my true personality was striking. At the time, the test told me that I was of personality type “ISTJ“, which can be explained via the following descriptions:

Ways of Gaining Energy: Introversion – You focus on your inner world and get energy through reflecting on information, ideas and concepts.

Ways of Taking in Information: Sensing – You notice and trust facts, details and present realities.

Ways of Making Decisions: Thinking – You make decisions using logical, objective analysis.

Ways of Living in the World: Judging – You prefer to be organized and orderly and to make decisions quickly.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I decided to take the MBTI a second time. This time my results were actually much different – I was now of personality type “INFP” (Introversion, Intuition, Feeling, Perceiving). Interestingly enough, this change in type felt right.

While there is a free test available online, the benefit of taking the official test is that you are provided with an eighteen-page report that provides in-depth analysis of the key facets of your personality as well as tangible suggestions on how to improve your communication style, ability to manage change and conflict, and ability to make decisions.

Not surprisingly, the introversion element of my personality was a key determinant in my discomfort on Rainier. Fortunately, I can interact with strangers without any difficulty and engage them in decent conversation, but if I don’t have the ability to (eventually) form any true connections with the people I am with, I am going to start to withdraw. The fact that I was unable to step away from the group on Rainier to replenish my sense of “self” made it all that much more challenging.

I used to think that my inability to rapidly “connect” with strangers was a deficiency that needed to be overcome. After much self-reflection and research, I no longer believe this. To be sure, if I felt this was a genuine barrier that needed to be overcome, then I would take immediate steps to expand my personality “container” to better adapt in these types of situations. However, it’s important to recognize that all personalities are created equal and trying to “fix” a personality trait because it doesn’t “fit” isn’t necessarily the right thing to do. A personality isn’t something that needs to be “fixed”.

What is the lesson here? When faced with new challenges, having inventory of your values, strengths and weaknesses are useful tools, but the true foundation of understanding is a keen awareness of your own personality. If you take steps to explore your personality through formal or freely available personality tests, explore related literature about your personality type, and integrate the suggestions and information into your mode of operation, you will find that your sense of self will be that much greater and you’ll have an enhanced ability to deal with conflict, make important decisions, and communicate with others who have personality types different from your own.

Thorthormi Tsho is a glacial lake perched precariously at 4428 metres above sea level in the remote Lunana area of northern Bhutan Rated as one of Bhutan’s likeliest future catastrophes, a breach and outburst flood through Thorthormi Tsho’s unstable moraine walls would most likely spill into the also vulnerable Raphsthreng Tsho 80 metres below, with the combined flood suddenly releasing up to 53 million cubic metres of water and debris into the upper catchment of the Po Chu river.

In a valley still bearing the scars of a just one third as large 1994 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) which took more than 20 lives and devastated villages and wrecked transport and power facilities, the prospect is frightening.

By ERIC AASEN / The Dallas Morning News eaasen@dallasnews.com On this Thanksgiving, as we stuff ours

By ERIC AASEN / The Dallas Morning News eaasen@dallasnews.com

On this Thanksgiving, as we stuff ourselves, we stuff our garbage disposals, too. We fill it with celery, turkey, stuffing, rice and pasta. We drop silverware in there. Even jewelry.

That means Thanksgiving time is prime time for plumbers to unclog drains and backed-up sinks. Roto-Rooter says business nationwide jumps about 50 percent on Thanksgiving Friday over other Fridays, making it the busiest day of the year.

This time of year, “the plumber is the hero,” said Mark Wissler, service manager at Dallas Plumbing Co.

Plumbers locally and across the country expect another busy holiday season. Several area plumbers will be available Thanksgiving, just like any other day of the year.

The activity in the kitchen, plus a house full of guests using the toilet, tub and shower, “can really rock your plumbing world,” said Paul Abrams, a Roto-Rooter spokesman.

Here’s a tip: A garbage disposal is not like a turkey – it’s not meant to be stuffed.

“They just think it’s the hole that makes things go away,” Wissler said. “They don’t want that nasty stuff smelling up their garbage can. They’re going to put everything down there that they can. … Disposals are the greatest thing as long as they’re used properly.”

Celery gets stringy and can form a ball and plug a drain. Pasta or rice get engorged with water and form a gel. Potato peels congeal. Add some grease from turkey drippings and you’ve got the “glue that holds everything together,” Abrams said.

One year, Wissler visited a home where Thanksgiving brisket had been stuffed down the disposal.

“I basically had to clear that drain line and pull out a pound of shredded meat,” he said. “I talked to the wife. She blamed her husband.”

One time, Wissler stopped by a house filled with 20 people, all trying to get ready for Thanksgiving dinner. Except that the kitchen sink was clogged.

“Within a half hour, I was done and they were the most grateful people,” he said. “That’s when you get some good tips.”

When Mark Carrasco, a local Roto-Rooter plumber, visits homes at Thanksgiving, homeowners are usually apologetic.

“They realize it was their fault off the bat,” Carrasco said. “They know it’s not a maintenance issue. They can usually tell you exactly what’s in there.”

Fixing a plumbing problem on an important holiday is rewarding, he said

“They’re getting aunts and uncles and everybody thanking you,” he said. “You can help them get back to their celebration.”

While it’s one thing to clog your drain with turkey and stuffing, or even brisket, it’s quite another to see valuable jewelry go down the drain.

Some women, while cooking and washing, take off their wedding rings and bracelets – and then accidentally drop them into the disposal.

Retrieving those sentimental items results in jubilation.

“There are smiles and laughter and a long laugh and relief that you were able to find it,” Carrasco said. “Wives hug me.”

Several area plumbers will be available Thanksgiving Day, just like any other day of the year. But here’s what to do to avoid calling a plumber during the holidays:

•Don’t pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify in pipes. Instead, wipe grease from pots with paper towels and throw them in the trash.

•Don’t place stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal, including poultry skins, celery, fruit and potato peels. Disposals can’t sufficiently grind these items.

•Make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. Don’t wait until it’s full to turn it on. Run warm water.
