Yep, though I’m beating a dead horse, I must say it once again: The END is nigh!

Sample this end-of-days rhetoric from an editorial published in over fifty newspapers worldwide, led by the UK Guardian, my emphasis.

Unless we combine to take decisive action, climate change will ravage our planet, and with it our prosperity and security. The dangers have been becoming apparent for a generation. Now the facts have started to speak: 11 of the past 14 years have been the warmest on record, the Arctic ice-cap is melting and last year’s inflamed oil and food prices provide a foretaste of future havoc. In scientific journals the question is no longer whether humans are to blame, but how little time we have got left to limit the damage. Yet so far the world’s response has been feeble and half-hearted.

Many of us, particularly in the developed world, will have to change our lifestyles. The era of flights that cost less than the taxi ride to the airport is drawing to a close. We will have to shop, eat and travel more intelligently. We will have to pay more for our energy, and use less of it.

Repent, oh ye sinful ones. The Day of Judgement is at hand! I particularly like that phrase, “…a foretaste of future havoc.” What did climate change have to do with the rise in oil and food prices? Nothing? Doesn’t matter, it shows us what we’re in for.

Oh reader, pauvre lecteur, must I direct you once again to the source of these following words, or have you already made the connection?

After having considered the chequered history of humanity’s response to the issue of drainage, as well as the spotty and feeble reaction to the recent crise one cannot but look to the future with dismay, and perhaps fear…We must arm ourselves with all the material and spiritual forces at our disposal… or else our culture is doomed to destruction.

Extrapolation from our present condition … yields a vision of Busting sewer mains and all waters of the world made as wormwood, unfit to drink. Mankind would be reduced to a primitive state of disunity …while the monument of our era’s accomplishments would gradually be submerged… In this hell on earth all laws of sense will be overturned, men will go mad for lack of water to drink… the Few Who Know will be the object of arrogant derision. And it is the folly of human inaction which will bring down on us this recapitulation of the Flood.

Not convinced? Check out this scholarly article: Seven Bowls of Wrath: the ecological relevance of Revelation:

Catastrophic effects of climate change invite comparisons with the “plagues” or wounds of the earth described in chapters 15 and 16 of the Book of Revelation. The seven Bowls of Wrath can be interpreted as an ecological parable for the decades ahead, as the impact of several centuries of human exploitation of natural resources and the effects of pollution threaten to result in a number of global calamities in the areas of human and animal health, environmental decline, habitat destruction, population displacement, and physical suffering caused by increasingly violent and frequent storms. Although symbolic admonitions, the “bowls of wrath” demonstrate an unusually sophisticated insight into the organic connection that exists among biologica) and geological systems and also the consequences of wantonly disrupting this balance through human greed, oppression, and malice. Finally, the compensating divine response to ecocatastrophe ends not in ultimate punishment, but the renewal of the cosmos and the healing of the nations. Revelation is a message of hope as well as warning and a summons to repent.

By: Deidra Metzler

There are various points of view regarding the environmental impact of washing your car as well as various methods to doing so. That being said, some may question what impact, if any, car washing really has on the environment. The first thing to be addressed is the bigger picture; wash water drainage. Where does the wash water really go? What impact does that wash water have on where it discharges?

All cities have different methods for directing water depending on its source. For example, New York City, NY discharges ALL water to the sanitary sewer system where water is treated for various constituents (more information on sanitary sewer systems can be found here). San Diego, CA on the other hand has two drainage systems, one is the sanitary sewer and the other is the storm drain system which discharges water, untreated, to nearby water bodies. What distinguishes where the water is discharged to? Location, location, location. Water from your toilet, sink, bathtub, dishwasher, and washing machine discharges to the sanitary sewer; also known as black and grey water. This is the water that is treated. The storm drain system drains to local water bodies; for San Diego, CA the water discharged to this system directly affects the Pacific Ocean. Drainage points are found in streets, parking lots, and landscape in the form of curb inlets, catch basins, etc.

It is important to be familiar with this information to understand the direct impact different methods of car washing can have on the environment. Knowing that water discharging to the storm drain system is untreated, it is important that car wash water is not discharged to it. The majority of at home car washing results in discharge into the storm drain system because the wash water is not contained or collected. Most commercial car washes prevent such discharges by containing wash water and directing it to the sanitary sewer.

What problems do wash water present to the storm drain system? This also can depend on your location, and the types of pollutants your car may be exposed to. However, it is most common for cars to have sediment and heavy metals on them. The source of sediment accumulation is pretty obvious; however, heavy metals may not be an obvious pollutant. Heavy metals such as copper can come from your brake pads. Cadmium, lead, and zinc can be sourced from your tires and are considered pollutants to the storm drain system. Sediment is problematic to aquatic life due to its ability to create a high turbidity, or cloudiness, in the water and the smothering affect it has on fish and amphibian eggs and gills. Large quantities of heavy metals can be poisonous to all types of wildlife through ingestion or dermal absorption.

Another thing to consider is that infrequent washing of your car can also cause environmental detriment. If you don’t wash sediment and other pollutants off your car on a regular basis any water discharge from your dirty car would most likely discharge to the storm drain system. Water discharge from your car can include water from rain, sprinkler water hitting your car, etc.

Car washing can be performed at home without negatively affecting the environment if water is contained and/or redirected to prevent it from reaching the storm drain system. To prevent water waste, it may be a good idea to collect wash water and distribute it to garden plants. Or water can be collected and dumped in a drain leading to the sanitary sewer system.

Water can be collected through methods as simple as creating a barrier with sandbags. Sandbags can be organized to direct water to a different location or to allow water to pool making collection easier. Anther barrier option would be a large tarp or other similar fabric with a berm, which can be laid down to contain water from washing activities. Other collection method examples are water vacuums or pumps, however these methods can be difficult without a pooled source of water. Combining the sandbag or tarp and water pump methods can be extremely effective in reallocating wash water. There are also products available that do not require the use of water to clean your car. Such products would eliminate the need to contain wash water.

It is important to note that some commercial car washes are not always effective in containing all wash water. Lack of complete containment can lead to a discharge to the storm drain system, which in many cases is considered an illegal discharge according to city regulations. Illegal discharges can cause grounds for a citation and/or a fine by city officials. Before utilizing a car wash ensure their wash water collection methods are effective in preventing discharges to the storm drain system.

Although the recent cold weather has unfortunately forced the closure of the golf course to play this week, it has provided ideal conditions for the grounds crew to install additional drainage lines on the 14th fairway. As we all know, 14 has been very soft and wet from the November rains, but the recent freezing temperatures have produced a very firm (frozen) surface which is allowing us access with our trencher and sand filling equipment. We are able to complete this work with very little, if any disruption to the surface.

Freshly trenched line ready for pipe

Our procedure for installing drainage is to trench the lines to a depth of 18″, we then run a 2″ course of washed sand, followed by laying the 4″ socked Big ‘O’ drainage pipe. This pipe is then filled to the surface with the washed sand. In the late winter, we will overseed the drainage trenches with a mix of seed and organic material to help grow it in. By the time spring weather kicks in, you’ll never know we were there. (except for the dry/firm surface!)

Trench being backfilled with sand

Final Product. Ready for overseeding

During our install, we have come across a number of drainage pipes that were installed in past years. Unfortunately, they were originally installed at too shallow a depth to be effective. These areas were retrenched to the proper depth, and it was very satisfying to see a significant amount of water draining from these new lines immediately following their installation.

Existing drain lines...too shallow to be effective

By the time the cold snap ends (and if we can beat any snow that might fall), we are looking to have installed an additional 1000′ of pipe, and we have identified a number of spots on other fairways on the golf course where we will continue with this drainage work over the winter.

The first steps are soon to be taken on the back of a drainage system rework for the city which is going to require some minor features of the downtown region to be altered. The Hutchison Street Drainage Project will be moving forward within the next few months, which should provide some profitable work to San Marcos electricians and other tradesman.

I have been made aware of problems with the council owned garages on Greenmoor Road.

The surface is the main problem. I tried to find a good piece of surface to get into the picture as a comparison but there is not a good piece to photograph.

There is a fencing panel at the back of the site which I have been told about on several occasions but upon inspection it is of equivalent specification to the remainder of the fence and it is securely fastened. It just looks different because it is brand new whereas the remainder of the panels have been there for years.

Graffiti is a problem at this site and I will try to have it removed. Graffiti brings an area down and makes it more likely to attract anti-social behaviour.

Rotten garage doors are also reported at this site. I shall check the maintenance schedule and see what the state of play is.

Barpool Road hosts a set of garages as well which regularly get reported for flooding.

The drainage her is not connected to the storm drain system. It is a soak away system which means that it may take up to twenty four hours for the drains to clear a large amount of water.

The state of the growth around the drains though will not be helping matters and is something easily corrected.

Still at the Barpool Road garages this walk through should be double this width. The concrete post should be in the middle and was only put in place to prevent vehicles using this entrance as an access point to the park.

This growth has obviously taken a while and will take some cutting back. In my opinion this may be a good job for the offenders team. I am told that they are looking for ideas for work that they can get the offenders to do. This could be a good one.

You create surface drainage by grading an area so that water collects and flows to a lower elevation

You create surface drainage by grading an area so that water collects and flows to a lower elevation away from the site. Regardless of surface characteristics, when it comes to surface drainage, slope is the most important issue to consider. For efficient drainage, paved surfaces should have a minimum 1-percent slope. Turf or landscaped areas should have a minimum slope of 2 percent.

“Shoot” the grade. Because slope is so important for drainage, a transit or level is good to have on hand to “shoot” grades. It is also the best way to find the absolute lowest spot in a potential drainage area. Exceeding the 2-percent standard by too much can cause erosion problems. Slopes of more than 4 or 5 percent will seem very steep in most landscape situations.

Calculate the slope. Each foot of elevation drop over a 100-foot length is 1 percent. Therefore, it takes 2 feet of elevation change over each 100-foot length of a swale to create a 2-percent slope. If the distance is 10 feet, you’ll need a fall of 0.2 feet (roughly 2.5 inches) to create a 2-percent slope.

Grade the area. Areas that will be paved, such as driveways or parking lots, are easy to surface drain by simply grading them so they slope away from structures and toward a lawn, storm sewer or street gutter. In open turf areas, you can create a swale by making a downward-sloping “crease” in the landscape where water will collect and flow to lower ground. If water flows to an area where it cannot completely exit the site, you can install a catch basin and pipe so the water will drain to its ultimate destination.

Control erosion. Immediately after you create a swale, you should install stone or sod, sow seed or design other means of stabilizing the area. (See related article, “Temporary grasses stabilize soil“.)

Moby Dick, or The Whale tells, among many other things, the story of Captain Ahab and his monomaniac

Moby Dick, or The Whale tells, among many other things, the story of Captain Ahab and his monomaniacal pursuit of a great white sperm whale named Moby Dick. The whale chewed off his leg some years past, and he is going to get even or die trying. Who was Ahab? As with almost everything else in the book, there are biblical overtones, usually Old Testament ones.

The Reign of Ahab
Kings 1: 16

And in the thirty and eighth year of Asa king of Judah began Ahab the son of Omri to reign over Israel: and Ahab the son of Omri reigned over Israel in Samaria twenty and two years.

And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before him. And it came to pass, as if it had been a light thing for him to walk in the sins of Jerobo’am the son of Nebat, that he took to wife Jez’ebel the daughter of Ethba’al king of the Zido’ni-ans, and went and served Ba’al, and worshipped him.

And he reared up an altar for Ba’al in the house of Ba’al, which he had built in Samaria.

Ahab married Jezebel, a foxy, pagan, princess from one of the neighboring non-Hebrew tribes that the Jews were always slaying and feuding with, and he was seduced into her ungodly ways. He listened to false prophets, and imprisoned or executed the true ones, largely at the urging of Jezebel. The Lord was not pleased, and he dealt harshly with Ahab, his sons, and Jezebel, who ended up being shredded and devoured by dogs as predicted by Elijah. Naturally, the crew of Captain Ahab’s ship, the Pequod, regarded him a bit warily. Is he mad? Money talks in the end: Ahab nails a Spanish coin to the mast and gives the men a pep talk.

Whosoever of ye raises me a white-headed whale with a wrinkled brow and a crooked jaw; whosoever of ye raises me that white-headed whale, with three holes punctured in his starboard fluke — look ye, whosoever of ye raises me that same white whale, he shall have this gold ounce, my boys!

Being many things, the book is a meditation on death, and life, and the relationship between the two. The entire crew dies in the pursuit of Moby, who shatters the Pequod as the whalers pursue him at the end. Only Ishmael survives to tell the tale, quoting the bible, in this case, Job:

… and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

In the midst of calm and peace, Melville can find chaos and terror, as in this passage about standing watch in the crow’s nest, high above the vast sea…

There is no life in thee, now, except that rocking life imparted by a gently rolling ship; by her, borrowed from the sea; by the sea, from the inscrutable tides of God. But while this sleep, this dream is on ye, move your foot or hand an inch; slip your hold at all; and your identity comes back in horror. Over Descartian vortices you hover. And perhaps, at mid-day, in the fairest weather, with one half-throttled shriek you drop through that transparent air into the summer sea, no more to rise for ever. Heed it well, ye Pantheists!

… and amidst chaos and carnage, he can find peace and the still point at the center of the universe, as in this passage where Ishmael describes being in the midst of a enormous pod of whales which the men are busily slaughtering – the water is remarkably clear, and looking down into it, he sees whales copulating, being born, nursed…

And thus, though surrounded by circle upon circle of consternations and affrights, did these inscrutable creatures at the centre freely and fearlessly indulge in all peaceful concernments; yes, serenely revelled in dalliance and delight. But even so, amid the tornadoed Atlantic of my being, do I myself still for ever centrally disport in mute calm; and while ponderous planets of unwaning woe revolve round me, deep down and deep inland there I still bathe me in eternal mildness of joy.

But even so, amid the tornadoed Atlantic of my being, do I myself still for ever centrally disport in mute calm. I like that line. Amidst the torrent of events, there is a still center. This leads us to today’s treat for you, oh reader! A recovered fragment from the second known text, The Sailor’s True Binnacle, in the mostly lost series, The Wine of Life, authored by the unknown thinker, Lichanos, from whom I have taken my blog nom de plume.

A binnacle is a casing for a navigation compass which is non-magnetic, and allows the compass to move freely and to point the way. It is mounted on gimbals so that it can remain steady and horizontal despite the tossing and rolling of the ship, and always pointed to north. Calm center, within the storm.

Pauvre reader! O poor lecteur!

How our Souls are all pitched and tossed about like the frailest shallop or jerry-built wherry upon the boiling waves! What Trials we have known struggling against current and headwind, seeking only to be Sturdy Helmsmen as we pass between the Devil and the deep blue sea!

The Sailor guiding his vessel is blessed with two articles with which he may ply his rudder: his binnacle and his compass.

[text lost]…Yet still the Gnashing, the Lamentation: “Where is our binnacle? Where is our compass? The Answer to these soulful queries has been the quest of many great men, both Good and Evil.

[text lost]… Bewilderment, begone! … [text lost]… The mystery of the True Binnacle stands revealed. To the compass of our minds is the Body our Binnacle, standing in its organic fleshiness impervious to the Magnetism which seeks etermally to deflect our inner Director from its true course. Be not skeptical nor materialist, for Mind/Body are one, and through our Binnacle/Bodies are we led and do lead. Truth once again arises from out of unity of Mind/Body, so that pleasures owing to one are not denied to the other: they work in tandem, a mighty engine of enlightenment propelling our dynamo sense onward to that final effulgent union with the ground of all …[text lost]

Hi-ho! me buck-o’s, through our skin we will absorb the World and revel in the Universe, sailing through the placid lake of the firmament to our own Safe Haven. Our Compass shall rock on its Gimbals of Life, and we will dirnk, as sailors we all are and are all wont to do, aye! we will drink the Wine of Life.

As a property investor, property purchases are likely less emotional and more logical than they are

As a property investor, property purchases are likely less emotional and more logical than they are for the average real estate buyer. Even if you’re looking at property investment from a business-minded point of view, though, it’s still possible to overlook some critical factors when it comes to making property investment decisions. With that in mind, below you’ll find some tips for making sure you take care of due diligence before purchasing your next investment property.

For the most part, due diligence can be summed up in one word: Inspection. Nothing stands to save you as much money and headache down the line as contracting a professional inspector to come in and look over a property before escrow closes. Your real estate agent will almost surely have inspector recommendations, but you may also want to check the American Society of Home Inspectors. This organization provides a built-in system of checks and balances since all members must pass exams and meet basic standards. Of course, you’ll still want to call a reference or two—after all, a bad inspection can potentially cost you thousands of dollars down the line.

Have the inspection done after you’ve made an offer and make sure your agent builds in a contingency to let you off the hook should an inspection turn up any troubling information. While you can have an inspection done prior to making an offer, remember that you will have to pay for an inspector, so it may not be the most financially desirable decision.

Prior to the inspection, request a disclosure from the seller. This is meant to alert you to any forthcoming problems that may not yet be detectable through a basic inspection. Try to obtain this information prior to the inspection so that your inspector can carefully examine areas that may pose potential hazards or issues in the near future. Remember, however, that disclosures are not foolproof as sellers may not even be aware of some looming issues.

Now that it’s time for the actual inspection, make sure that your general inspector thoroughly completes all of the following:

Check for structural issues (this includes the roof, plumbing, foundation, and pest damage).

Check for any heating or electricity issues.

Check drainage.

Some inspectors check for pest issues, while others do not. If you choose an inspector that does not check for pest control, you would be wise to have a second contractor in to take a look. You will want this inspector to not only look for pests and termites, but also fungus and dry rot.

Also keep in mind, you may not be done after just one inspection; other specialized inspectors may be necessary as well. For example, if the general inspector finds roof hazards, consider bringing a roof specialist in to let you know exactly what you’re looking at. Additionally, to avoid environmental hazards that could potentially cost you big time down the line, bring in an environmental health hazard specialist to check for things like mold, lead, and asbestos.

When all is said and done, ideally you will not find any major problems, let alone a deal-breaker. If your inspection does turn up problems that will need to be addressed, you can negotiate with the seller, who may agree to make certain repairs or lower the property’s selling price. And if you do find a deal breaker, as unfortunate as it may seem at the time, rest assured that the price you’ve paid on inspections has likely saved you thousands down the line.

During a small group (round table) meeting in Quezon City at the residence of poet and writer Rolly

During a small group (round table) meeting in Quezon City at the residence of poet and writer Rolly Carbonell, Author, poet,on forthcoming hazards from climate change and the solar super storm in 2012-2013, everyone shared their their ideas on various psycho-social issues that need to be considered about this event in the near future.

Initially, the group discussed the impact of the tsunami in Thailand and Indonesia, Bangladesh et al, Hurricane Katrina in the US, Typhoon Ondoy in the Philippines.

The Convenor of the conference, Sen. Edgar U. Ilarde, said that there will even be bigger catastrophes come 2012 and 2013, when the phenomenon of the solar climax or solar maximum takes place. This will be in the form of a magnetic storm or a solar super storm that has devastating effects on both humans and more potently upon satellites, electronics, communications and many other devices powered by electricity.

On the other hand, Author, poet, philosopher George Sison, said:

The way we approach disaster, those in the past and especially those that are forthcoming, it almost looks like we brought these things upon ourselves.

George was saying that as if by mute agreement, we all collectively invoke disaster and will calamities to wreak damage upon ourselves and loved ones. Our conventional conscious acts and thinking either make or help make storms and earthquakes to happen. This is a dangerous thing to do. Psychically inviting peril and death.

George was also saying that we, as a people that are called Filipinos, are the only ethnic group that apparently suffer from negative karmic vibrations that in selected places of the world, once identified as Filipinos, we are discriminated against. In George’s experience, he says he was extremely humiliated in an airport when someone asked who were from the Philippines and segregated all those that raised their hands from the rest and told to occupy a corner so as to be processed longer than the rest of the travelers.

Such negative karma in a collective, George says, if powerful enough can also be contributory to events that happen in the environment. Together with the negative psychic energy of many others in the rest of the planet, we could even trigger bigger, much more tremendously powerful calamities all around the world.

There are two main methods which you can use to plant your plants into our exclusive range of Cubede

There are two main methods which you can use to plant your plants into our exclusive range of Cubedec steel décor pots. You can either plant indirectly in plastic liners or stackers, or you can plant directly.

Firstly, we can customize your Cubedec pot according to three different sized plastic liners. The sizes available are 25cm, 32cm and 55cm in diameter. We can construct circular rims in your steel pot to ease the adding and removing of the plastic liners. Therefore, you can change the plants in your pots at any time without any hassle.

Alternatively, we can customize your steel décor pot to suit a square stacker, measuring 28cm in diameter.

For direct planting, we fabricate a 3cm lip at the bottom of the pot and lay a steel plate over that. Then we drill holes in the steel plate to enable ventilation. This steel plate also forms the base for your plants. Then we rubberize the entire inner surface of the pot, to enhance protection of the steel.

Firstly, you need to lay down a layer of gravel to facilitate drainage. Then you can fill your pot with potting soil and plant your selected plant into the pot. In the past we have constructed a 1m³ gabion basket, which we planted with trees. We lined the sides of the basket with weed guard cloth to prevent weeds from sprouting and growing.

The suggested planting method is planting in a liner or stacker, as it facilitates removal of plants, should you wish to change your plants. It will also reduce the natural wear and tear on your Cubedec pot. This proves once again that Badec Bros Deco manufactures truly versatile products.

Should you wish to have your very own signature Cubedec pot, green screens, man-hole grid, range of planters for a shopping centre, modern pergola, Cubedec steel dustbin, interactive sculpture, Cubedec shelving, Cubedec miniature Zen garden box, 2010 Soccer World Cup décor, mild steel lamp shade, mild steel screen, Cubedec laser-cut logo, gabion counter, narration stand, gabion light cage, gabion bollard, gabion water feature, sculptured living wall, sculptured flagpoles, unique pot and drip tray, customized sculpture, Cubedec bench, trendy steel décor with your company logo emblazoned on it, mild steel inspirational slogan, steel laser-cut signage, mild steel mould, hanging sculpture, gabion pot, gabion wall or gabion terrace, wooden or steel feature poles, bar code trellis, Cubedec water feature, arch, sculpture or trellis, please feel free to contact our energetic and knowledgeable sales representative, Mareleen van Zijl, on her cell phone at 078 800 5112, the office number at 012 460 7990, or via e-mail at mareleen@badecbros.com
