Y’all remember Dramatic Chipmunk/Prairie Dog/Gopher/Groundhog? (I haven’t decided whether to refer to our favorite internet rodent by his actual species or the more common misnomers that have, unfortunately, stuck like wood chips to the back of a hoodie.) If you do, you must have encountered every variation of Dramatic Anything. There are playlists out there dedicated to the original, and the offshoots range from cats to dogs to even Senator John McCain.

I stumbled across this video while simply reminiscing about the days of EGADS our fuzzy friend. This dog is beyond simply dramatic. This dog is hypnotic, hysteric, and chock full of lulz.

Most of the comedy comes right from the canine’s mysterious blue eyes. The curl of the upper lip certainly helps the stare and its inherent intensity. At first viewing, I thought the video editor may have overdone the special effects on those coveted cupcakes, but as I really took stock of the effects themselves, placing the stare as much in the background as the optic powers would allow me (the magnetism is uncanny) I saw the effects’ enhancement of the video. By being over the top, this brings the nature of Stains’ stare into (ahem) focus. Alone, this pet would be ogle-worthy, with the music, floating cupcakes, glowing icing, and a shameless reference to Einstein’s relativity research, we’ve got something that should have reached meme status when it came onto the scene a year ago. More videos of awkward stares and glowing baked goods should pop up before I die, lest I leave this earth unsatisfied.

Dia após dia, semana após semana, você acorda com o cabelo parecendo que foi pisoteado e sapateado pela Sapucaí inteira, a cara inchada, travesseiro encharcado com sua baba e o olho remelento para ir para a escola ter o prazer de adquirir conhecimento e pegar as cocotinhas. heh.

E meus amiguinhos babuínos e leitores desse blog me deram a idéia de eu falar sobre todo sobre o motivo que você sai de casa toda santa manhã, e sobre o hospício, que é a escola.

Já devo ter falado que eu estudo na ETERJ, que por acaso fica em algum portal para outra dimensão no Rio (Caso você não tenha notado o “RJ” em letras maiúsculas e destacadas lá no fim). Sou futuro técnico de informática, e informática MESMO, não é “Conecta e formata”.

Informática é a escolha dos nerds e daqueles que pensaram que seria só MSN e Orkut (péssimas notícias para eles até eles conhecerem algo chamado “Lógica da Programação”). E Mecânica, Eletrônica e Eletrotécnica é a escolha de muitos “leks piranhas, piranhagi pura”.

Minha turma parece ter saído diretamente do profundo abismo da bizonhice e de um centro de reabilitação mental. Todos lá são um bando de loucos, uns menos que os outros e outros atingiram o nirvana de lucidez jamais alcançado nem com o uso de LSD durante 10 anos (como eu). Eles conseguiram estragar o meu cérebro em 6 meses quase o tanto quanto a internet fez em 7 anos, acredite.

Uma de suas peripécias da minha turma consiste ter 2 alunos (quase 3) indo para a diretoria, SEGUIDOS. Não falo descer um grupinho, falo descer um e depois o outro (e quase que fui junto). Tudo por causa de UM SUBSTANTIVO. Fomos lá tirar satisfações duvidosas. Professora estressada + ironia+ alunos loucos da vida, ainda fico feliz que não acha um buraco no estado do Rio de Janeiro onde deveria ficar a ETERJ… O primeiro foi só eu ouvir o “alho” do final do caralho que estava descendo. Eu quase desci por causa de um “sorriso” e reclamação mal interpretado. E por último, o gran finalle; Um aluno teve bolas de fazer algo que eu não faria sob o efeito de ácido lisérgico, ele simplesmente falou que 4 anos de faculdade não serviram de nada para uma pessoa que não sabia o que era um substantivo.

Como se irritar professores não bastasse, ainda temos como hobby a arte de “Bangunçar com provas”. O que fazer quando você não sabe alguma questão na prova e está em desespero? Pense numa piada boa, escreva, coloque na internet e pronto, sua foto vai estar pelos todos os blogs possíveis. A seguinte pergunta era indagada:

Em um súdito ataque de imbecilidade e Kernel Panic no cérebro, o aluno simplesmente respondeu:

Como se não bastasse… Segundo a minha turma, o criador do Linux foi… BILL GATES. BILL FUCKING GATES. Oh, irony.

E isso foi apenas em uma semana. UMA SEMANA. Essa turma está pisoteando no meu cérebro. Meu cérebro entra em estado de Kernel Panic a ponto de curto circuito.

Sério, a escola está do PERU. A turma também não tá me ajudando muito à fazer qualquer coisa, por incrível que pareça, o que explica uma aparente falta de qualidade (MAIS?!) do post e rapidinho. A turma está conseguindo fazer com que TODOS os professores queiram nos enrabar… SEM PIEDADE. E sem K.Y.

The restive rodent edged out Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ dad Bruce Jenner, Hollywood tough guy R. Lee Ermey and 80s singer Cyndi Lauper, who rounded out the top four.

“I would say this is a sign viewers hope Paula’s replacement brings some drama to the show,” said one Hollywood insider who wished to remain anonymous, but whose name rhymes with “Meven Mielsberg.”

The Dramatic Chipmunk gained international stardom in 2007 when a video of him looking really, really dramatic gained millions of hits on YouTube. Since then, he has stayed in the limelight by appearing as a dramatic headache sufferer in commercials for Head-On.  He also won critical acclaim for his stint in “Drama Queen” a one-man Broadway show about an alcorexic chipmunk struggling to cope with his sexuality, Tourette’s Syndrome and addiction to diet pills.

Es normal que algunas personas se pongan nervios@s cuando viajan.

Por mi parte, mis únicos momentos de atención son en el despegue y el aterrizaje. Por lo demás, estoy bien. Pero siempre hay alguien que, por alguna razón, le incomoda el volar.

Nunca voy a olvidar la broma que mi hermano y un amigo le hicieron a un pasajero a bordo de American Eagle.

Este señor se le notaba que estaba ansioso y sudoroso, mirando a su alrededor de una manera irregular.

Mi hermano y el amigo lo notaron, y siendo ambos mecánicos, empezaron a “conversar” entre ellos de cómo habían notado que el motor que mueve una de las hélices estaba mostrando “señales” de que algo no andaba bien.

Que si está vibrando mucho, que si le está empezando a salir aceite, que si emite un ruido extraño…en fin, ambos empezaron a dar cátedra de cómo diagnosticar un motor de avión, muy a pesar de este caballero pasajero que, al escucharlos hablar, su nerviosismo aumentaba de manera considerable, causando que este fuese al baño más de lo normal. En otras palabras, lo hicieron sufrir a propósito.

Pero nosotros jamás nos atreveríamos a hacer lo que ellos hicieron. Excepto si nos provocan.

A nuestra izquierda estaba esta señora sumamente “emperifollá” (palabra puertorriqueña para describir a alguien vestid@ de manera pomposa). Antes y durante el despegue, yo estaba haciéndole unas observaciones a Lourdes sobre mi celular, y lo señalaba mientras estaba encendido, pero en “airplane mode”. De momento, la descubrimos con esta única mirada que parecía decir: “¿Qué estás haciendo? ¿Por qué ese celular está prendido?”. Tal vez la mejor forma de describir su rostro lo es utilizando como ejemplo el famoso “dramatic chipmunk”. Idéntico.

Luego de ver que esta señora no paraba de, en intérvalos cada ves más constantes, mirarnos, le propuse a Lourdes que para que ella supiera cuando la señora en cuestión estaba viéndonos, yo le avisaría haciendo un sonido estilo timbre (“¡tin!”).

Tantas fueron las veces que esa señora nos miró que indudablemente y con el apoyo incondicional de Lourdes, la bautisamos como “Doña ¡Tin!”.

De ahora en adelante, cuando alguien me mire con un “look dramático” estilo “Dramatic Chipmunk”, el o ella se llamará “Don o Doña ¡Tin!”.

Afortunadamente, el cansancio no impidió que Doña ¡Tin! se olvidara de su lindo vestido y, utilizando el asiento reclinable, agarró la almohada tal cual peleador de lucha libre haciendo una “llave cuatro” y se durmió.

Menos mal, porque si no, este viaje hubiese resultado más largo de lo que debería ser.

Keeping some of your content clever and short can evoke basic human emotion which can outdo well thoughtout and lengthy content. When you cause a your audience to experience an emotion through your content you can create a weak tie which is one of the most powerful relationships in social networking.

Warner Records recently pulled all music videos by their bands off Youtube.  Rumors are abound about a joint-venture music video website, created by the major record labels, much in the vein of what has been done for television shows with Hulu.  For the sake of this essay I’m going to refer to this new site as “Mulu” (Music + Hulu)

This Mulu  is a terrible idea and is doomed to fail.  Here are 8 reasons why:

1 – Traffic.

Youtube has over 63,000,000 unique visitors a month.  Hulu, the television equivalent of what the music industry intends to make, has slightly over 3,000,000.  Hulu, by any account, has been a success yet it has less than 1/30th the traffic Youtube does.  Even if the music video site achieves the success of Hulu, which I doubt it will, it will pale in comparison to the traffic of Youtube.  Because the traffic will be so much less (even if wildly successful), videos are much less likely to go viral and they will have a much smaller potential reach.

2 – Lack Of Synergy

Mulu would presumably only have music videos and the content would be either entirely or overwhelmingly major label in origin.  One of the reasons why Youtube is great is that it functions as a music discovery site.  Because there is so much more on Youtube than just music videos and because the site is so sticky, many people come to Youtube for one thing and end up staying for some time, watching other, random videos.  For example, you go on Youtube to find the Dramatic Chipmunk video and half an hour later you find yourself still on site, watching old Mission of Burma live videos.  Because Youtube is so large and diverse, each video on the site adds value to every other video on the site.  Mulu will not have this synergy and added value.

3 – The “Wikipedia Effect”

Youtube is fantastic because it is a decentralized, user driven site.  Mulu will be a centralized site run by a few administrators.  The net effect is that Mulu will have a less diverse selection of music and the videos that are up there will take longer to be posted than on Youtube.  This is analogous to why Wikipedia is so much better than Encyclopedia Britannica.  Because Wikipedia is the product of its users, it is updated far quicker and is far more wide-ranging than the Encyclopedia Britannica, even though Britannica has superior resources (money, intelligent people to write articles) than Wikipedia.  A decentralized content creation system will always outperform a centralized one.

4 – Mulu Will Likely Be Poorly Designed And Overly Restrictive

If history teaches us anything, it’s that any website created or approved by the music industry will be poorly designed, hard to use, and overly restrictive.  Technology is not what the music industry does and it’s not what it knows.  When they delve into technology, it usually ends up being a mess. 

5- Videos As A Promotional Tool, Not Income Stream

By creating Mulu, the record industry will be losing focus of their prime objective: to make a profit off music.  The point of a music video is promotional.  They are made to promote music; to spread awareness and to create a deeper connection with fans.  Yes, music videos can be art themselves and yes, they are capable of generating revenue.  But that is not their purpose nor should it be.

Record labels spend millions each year promoting their music, often giving great lip service to the need to create “viral” content.  Music videos are the second most viral tool they have (the actual music being #1) and one of the most cost effective (compare the relative cost to reach of Ok Go’s Treadmill video to the cost of a TV or print ad campaign with a similar reach).  Yet, here we have the record labels trying to restrict promotional/viral ability of these videos by removing them from the most viral website online.  By focusing on maximizing revenue on something ancillary rather than using it to achieve higher overall revenues, the record labels are getting off course.  That they were already were receiving money from Youtube, even if it wasn’t much, is fantastic.  They were being paid to promote their bands.  Why mess with that?

6 – Amateur Content?

Mulu will feature official music videos but what about amateur content?  What about all the mash-ups, fan videos, amateur-shot live videos and fair-use remixing videos that make Youtube so entertaining?  One of my all-time favorite videos is a fan video.  Amateur content featuring Warner artists has been pulled down.  Will it resurface at Mulu?  Or is it done for good?  As good of a promotional tool as official music videos are, amateur content is often better and more viral.  A amateur-less Mulu would be a significantly diminished site.

7 – Hulu and Mulu Are Inherently Different

Hulu and Mulu are inherently different in a manner than significantly diminishes Mulu’s chances for success.  Visitors to Hulu have a specific target; they are there to watch last week’s episode of The Office.  There is not a whole lot of lateral movement; you come to the site with a purpose then you leave.  You don’t spend your time finding new content. One of Youtube’s greatest strength is the cross pollination between videos.  Consumers of streaming television shows (specific target) and streaming music videos (often non-specific and tangental) function differently.  Fans often stumble upon music videos at Youtube, not actively seek them out.  A large number of fans won’t even bother going to Mulu. 

8 – Online Video Is More Than Just Youtube

Just because Warner has removed their videos off Youtube does not mean they have removed them from the internet.  There are over 20 other video sites on the web, some of them with very significant traffic (DailyMotion, MetaCafe, Yahoo Video, Revver, and many others).  If you can no longer post major label music to Youtube then it will be posted on these other sites.  This will function to help these sites grow tremendously.  It will be analogous to when Napster was shut down.  Rather than removing the music from the internet, it caused it to relocate to other, less policeable areas of the web.  The same thing will happen with music videos.

Well, I thought that it might be nice to keep track of all the amusing things that happen in my life.  It may not be the most poetic, insightful or well-written blog out there – but I think it may serve another purpose: to record incidents in my life with my kids that often make really great stories.  Here’s an example:

I told you earlier that I was on a trip for the last 3 days.  As I was leaving school on Wednesday, Chichi decided to leave a couple of post-it notes on my luggage so I definitely would not miss them!  You may be able to guess what one note had on it – a heart.  Ah… well, the other ones were a request for yet another Children’s Day (more on that later!) present.  Now that may not seem strange coming from a 6 year old – after all it really is about the loot.  When her father is away on a trip and she talks to him on the phone, conversations typically go like this:

“Hi Daddy!”

“Hi Chichi!”

“Did you buy me a present?”

interjection from me in the background: “Chichi ask him how the trip is going!”

“So Daddy – did you get me a present?”

“Yes I did.  How are you?  How is Lu?  What are you doing?”

At this point she is satisfied that there is a present on the way, so why bother talking any more!

“Nothing – bye.”

Anyone who has been on the phone or MSN with Chichi knows that especially when I am around she is not very chatty.

Anyway, back to the notes… the other ones said that she wants another Children’s Day present.  Before I went on my trip we all went to get prezzies for Lu and Chichi.  We decided to get them both navy blue Converse All-stars.  It is so cute – we all have a pair.  Ah… So we gave them both their shoes on Monday before I went on the trip.  But, Chichi let me know on Tuesday that she needed another present for Children’s Day.  The shoes were not going to cut it, not because they are shoes rather than a toy, but because it was not fair.  Since all the other kids had to wait until Sunday to get their presents, it was not fair that she got hers before they did.  So that meant that she really needed another present for Sunday.  I mean think about the justice in it, if other kids did not get their presents beforehand, it was somehow not a present.  What kind of logic is that?

Now the explanation for Children’s Day: It is a celebration of children – hence the name – but since we are at least a century away from the Industrial Revolution, it seems, at the very least, a bit odd.  I mean, for most of us, every day is children’s day.  Once you get to be a parent it really no longer is about you, it is all about them.  Maybe that is the reason that we do celebrate them or maybe it is another way to maximize shopping days at toy stores.  You decide!

I guess the main point here still is… my daughter left me notes on my luggage before my trip – ah! – leave off the bit about the conspicuous consumption – some details are better left out.

Creepy anecdote about Children’s Day:  When we got to the school in Bahia it was all decorated for Children’s Day.  There were balloons, candies and pieces of fabric arranged around the front of the school like a HUGE party.  When we walked in we were greeted by two very short dressed up creatures – I have no idea what they were supposed to be.  Anyway, I said hello to one and he responded in a very deep adult voice.  When we all figured out that they were not children, it just didn’t seem right at a school.  Doesn’t that seem rather exploitative?  I didn’t get it – prefer not to think about it really.

A wacky anecdote about Children’s Day:  One of the girls on my team decided to dress up as a cat for the tournament on Friday.  At the school it was funny and innocuous enough not to bother me, but in the ariport she made an enormous amount of heads turn.  If you’ve ever seen dramatic chipmunk on youtube - you know what people’s reactions were – we’re not talking a casual glance in the girl’s direction, we’re talking a full-stop 180 turn quick enough to result in whiplash – a la dramatic chipmunk!

My mom was just writing someone an email and asked if anyone used “da bomb!” to describe things anymore.  My reaction?

T’s finally back and no longer in a comatose/sleeping beauty state.  I was finally able to socialize with someone close to my own age.  Not that I don’t love chatting with my 88 year old residents,  but you know what I mean.  T and I went to the Y to work out.  Well, I’m assuming that he worked out.  I was in an aerobics class so he could have spent the whole time sitting in the lobby watching television.  After the workout we went to the Olive Garden.  It was nice to go to a restaurant with another person.  We also went to Baskin Robbins for dessert.  We didn’t exactly paint the town red (whatever that means), but we had a nice evening together.  I don’t know what our weekend plans are, but I’m sure it will be something enjoyable and fun.  T thinks that it’s impossible for me to have fun without him.  Well….no comment.  Hopefully we do something exciting so that I can have something to blog about besides myself.  Not that talking about myself is a bad thing, but I’m sure you’re up for some new stuff.
