The big homie Game .. Did an interview with Complex where he talks about the R.E.D. album, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Interscope and working with Dre again! Interview after the jump!

It’s been over a year since we’ve seen Jayceon Taylor on covers of magazines with a gun to his head, and crying on YouTube videos about hip-hop of the past. He’ll be the first to admit his life is an emotional roller-coaster, but nowadays The Game seems more content than usual.
And maybe he has good reason to be. He’s back working with Dr. Dre and says his forthcoming LP The R.E.D Album (due out February 16) is his favorite since The Documentary. He’s even feeling relieved that Jay-Z never responded to his sideways comments he made in his last Complex interview. Yesterday, we reconnected with Game to get his take on 50 baiting Jay into a battle, the new album, young rappers like Drake, and why Interscope chairman Jimmy Iovine wants to reunite the hip-hop Beatles. It was Game on as usual…

Interview by Joe La Puma

Complex: Starting off, talk about the reasoning behind naming your new joint The R.E.D. Album.

Game: R.E.D is simply rededicated. That’s what R.E.D is, the r-e-d in red for me. And rededicated to what? My family, my craft, which is hip-hop, my fans, which are world wide, my children, my hood, my city, and what got me here—which is the color. I think that before I came out there was no red. There was Snoop, everybody was Crip walking. I came in, I took the color on as a whole. People just adapted to who I am and where I come from. I mean now, even Crips wear red.

Complex: How do you feel about other rappers who claim Blood and shout “Soo-Woo”?

Game: I mean, look what I did to Jim Jones, and look at Weezy, and look at Gucci Mane. I feel like I did that. It’s a free country. People can do whatever they want to do and if anything they’re just making me bigger and my legacy and where I come from and what I represent bigger.

Complex: I know Gucci Mane is on the album. What other collaborations can we expect?

Game: I got Rick Ross. I got Beanie Sigel, I got Jeezy. I finally did a song with Jeezy that’s fuckin’ crazy too. For the most part it’s me, with a couple of features from people I haven’t worked with yet—I always try to work with new people every album. But it’s people that I respect and that are also poppin’ in the world and that other people want to hear.

Complex: I read somewhere that there’s going to be some production by RZA. Is that true?

Game: RZA gave me a beat, which I am so fuckin’ ecstatic about. I appreciate it because he doesn’t make beats anymore. RZA gets paid millions of dollars now to score movies, big fuckin’ movies. So, for him to come in my studio and for him to say “Yo Game, I brought this beat to you and just listen to it and just tell me if you like it…” So I listened to it and I was so crazy about it. I called him and he was like, “Yo, you could have that beat.” That’s all it was and I ain’t talk to RZA since, shit [Laughs].

Complex: So Jay-Z did The Black Album, The Beatles did The White Album. How does The R.E.D. Album stack up against those masterpieces?

Game: I just would consider this my best effort since The Documentary. My favorite would be the Doctor’s Advocate, but The Documentary is my first album. It is to the people what Illmatic was to the people, what Ready to Die was, what Reasonable Doubt was, Straight Out of Compton, and all those albums. It’s the first album, so I kind of think that people are biased to say that it’s classic. But The R.E.D. Album is as dope as The Documentary was. There’s no controversy in my way. There’s nobody telling me to rap like this or anything, I’m just dead me on this album. I did it by myself, with the help of Dr. Dre this time and that was a breath of fresh air and relieved a lot of my stress and tension. It’s always easier when you’re rolling with that mastermind, man.

Complex: So working with Dre again, it seemed to piss 50 off a little bit…

Game: That made 50 mad, man.

Complex: Do you think it was a jealousy thing?

Game: 50’s just bitter, man. For what reason? I don’t know. He doesn’t have to be. Me and his beef is old at this point. It’s pure comedy for me at this point. When he says something, I laugh. If I shoot a shot back it’s just a joke at this point. Nobody is going to kill each other. Nobody is gonna beat each other’s ass. I’m not gonna do none of that. So we might as well get along. We exist in hip-hop. You know with opening arms he can re-join my band of brothers. Just say sorry and you want to make music. He’ll never be as big as he was and he’ll never be able to put out an album that people will be waiting for and anticipate as much without me, period. And I ain’t saying that he needs me, but me and him made the best records together. I understand it, he needs to understand it, and maybe one day we’ll record. He said recently in an interview that he’ll never work with Game again but that’s all him talking and his ego. I can’t wait to mend the ties with Eminem. Me and Eminem had never been at odds but he had to take 50’s side. That’s his artist and his homie and what not, and I understood it but I’d love to get back with Eminem and work again and sort of restructure the Voltron if you will.

Complex: Even though he says he won’t work with you, it seems like right now you’re telling me you’d definitely work with 50 again…

Game: ‘Cause I don’t hold grudges. Like, it’s hip-hop, man. We’re not fuckin’ WWF wrestlers, we’re not boxers man, it’s just hip-hop. It’s just make music or don’t make music. It’s not a gang war, like he’s not a Crip and I’m a Blood, and this ain’t fuckin’ ‘85, and I’m not gonna ride through his hood and do a drive by, like it’s not that serious, bruh. It’s just hip-hop and I think that he’s more bitter towards me then anyone else he’s had drama with because look what I did to his brand. I killed G-Unit. I killed the clothes, I killed the brand, I killed Tony Ya-Yo, Banks, and Buck at that time. Like I really fucked up a lot of money for that dude. Not only for him but my label, Jimmy Iovine, who at this point, I’m apologetic to.
Complex: Is the label situation cool now?
Game: I’ve mended the wounds at Interscope. You know I went against my own label and I came out the smoke with my hands held high and my head, man. So I mean, I don’t know what 50’s problem is but I’m here. Whenever he wants to call me on the phone and talk about it, squash it or we can keep on going with this fucking child- like antics. He can do it, I can do it and we can do it ’til we fuckin’ die, it makes me no difference, man.

Complex: Interesting…

Game: If he ever wants to do something of catastrophic proportion, then we could. If we said tomorrow Game and 50 are coming out with an album, you know how many motherfuckin’ antennas would go up? We could still sell a million records just off promoting it alone. I mean, I understand the business aspect of it. I understand that you know, he’s got a big ego. I’m just not one with it, I don’t have one. I forgive and forget and that’s life. One day you’re alive and the next day you die. So why spend it bitter and mad at the fuckin’ world, man? I don’t understand it.

Complex: 50’s been baiting Jay-Z recently. As someone who’s had issues with both of them, how do you feel about him going after Jay?

Game: Oh yeah, I already did that Jay-Z thing. 50’s just doing what I’m doing. Nobody went at Jay, I went at Jay. Now everybody wants to get at Jay, not saying anything about Beanie Sigel, that’s personal and I stay out of that. He’s just a man and he’s got all the right in the world, but I feel like I did something that people have been wanting to do, but everybody is scared because Jay-Z is so lyrically inclined to cut your throat and your career in half that nobody wanted to do it. But me? I just don’t give a fuck sometimes.

Complex: What do you think that the result of that battle would be?

Game: Jay-Z will fuck 50 up in a battle! It would be so fast and over with. 50 is funny, but Jay is witty. Jay-Z is not to be toyed with. If he fuckin’ responds, if he feels like you’re really pissing him off and he responds, he’s gonna fuck you up! He would fuck me up, I’m just glad he didn’t fuckin’ respond, so I didn’t have to go dig in my fuckin’ bag and try to fuck him up. I definitely think that Jay-Z didn’t come at me like he came at any other rappers because I definitely would have been more disrespectful and once you start a beef with me you better be ready to go the whole motherfuckin’ 12 rounds because I will try to chew your fuckin’ ear off like Mike Tyson. I’ll do it and I think he knew that—I’m disrespectful. So Jay, he did the right thing and just kinda let it die down and I let it die down ’cause it wasn’t anything really. It was fuckin’ fun and I really admire Jay’s career. I just really don’t care too much for the man himself.

Complex: Now, I saw on your Twitter that you were talking to Shyne recently.

Game: Yeah, I talked to him for about an hour. Just about his well being and both of our next moves. What I thought he should do and he listened and held me on my thoughts and he gave me a lot of insight on my career and what he thought of my career from the several years while he’s been locked down. He’s the reason why I’m not ready to jump into beefs and controversy today because he kind of shed light on some different situations and it gave me a different perspective. Which is one that I respect being that he’s been behind those bars. So we just chopped it up about life and issues and each other, man.

Complex: Last year we saw you on the cover of The Source with a gun to your head and you were saying some days are good, some days are bad. What is your mind frame like today?

Game: I’m in such a fuckin’ good mood man, you could damn near run in my front yard and blow up my car and I would just smile at you. I might fuckin’ shoot you with a sling-shot or something, but I’m definitely less drama filled and I’m just having a good time with my music and my life. I’ve been going out a couple of nights with my boys and drinkin’ and hangin’ and chillin’ and I’m just having fun. You know, the other night I was in a club out here with a couple of billionaire homies and we bought some Ace of Spades and joked about Jay-Z, but at least we contributed 17 grand. It costs 17 grand in the club and five grand on the fuckin’ street. We bought it and just balled out man. In the name of Jay-Z, H-O-V, R-O-C, ya heard? [Laughs]

Complex: [Laughs] I noticed that you Twitter a lot. What rap blogs do you read?

Game: Rap blogs? None. Man I don’t fuckin’ buy XXL anymore, unless I see them around in the studio anymore, [but] I won’t pick them up. I’m so lost, like people were telling me, “Yo, you gotta hear this new kid, J. Cole.” Like people had to force feed me Drake, I never even heard him until a while after he started blowing up and then I became a fan. But I’m so out of the fuckin’ loop. Like I got my Biggie greatest hits, my Makavelli, my fuckin’ EPMD albums in every car. So I don’t know what’s going on currently in hip-hop, unless it pertains to me and my career directly.

Complex: There’s not a young rapper who really impressed you?

Game: Oh, Drake’s the man! Drake is fuckin’ phenomenal. I like Drake, he’s dope as fuck. Lyrically that dude, the shit he says and where he gets it from is crazy. Drake is dope. I haven’t heard a bad song yet.
Complex: So going back to the label situation, it seems like everything is smooth with Interscope?
Game: Everything that happened in my career was nobody’s fault but mine. They run a business and I went against that business and, I paid for it. With the loss of the group aspect. Jimmy Iovine likes to say, “Thanks for breaking up the Beatles, Game. Thank you.”

Complex: And he’s referring to you…

Game: John Lennon and Paul McCartney. I’m John Lennon and 50 is Paul McCartney and Jimmy always says, “Thanks for breaking up the Beatles, man, you guys are worth more together. So I don’t know what the fuck you guys are doing. Whenever you guys want to fuckin’ get your heads out your asses. Come sit down and take a meeting, make some money, we can talk. Until then, just keep the shit out of my office.” That’s Jimmy Iovine for you, man.

Up until about a year ago, I had no idea that there was a blood test for prostate cancer. Before that, I thought that the only way to test for prostate cancer was a doctor’s finger up your bum. Most guys are like me and would rather pretend that everything’s OK, than have someone get even close to our anus. I found out recently that neither test is very accurate. We definitely need more research. Support the cause and donate to Movember.

Ok, I admit it. I’m from the suburbs. I went to a private high school. I bought my own car at 17. I worked at Starbucks. I grew up on angst-filled rock ‘n’ roll.

I’m your definition of a middle class suburban kid.

So, of course, I have an unnatural fixation on Che Guevera. Revolution! Er, wait, didn’t he like, murder people and stuff? Nevermind, they sell his shirts at the mall! Hooray!

When we were picking our logos, I kept pushing for all this ‘Power to the People’ and ‘Revolution’ stuff. I give you:

Yes, I like Photoshop.

There is logic here, despite what you may think.

I firmly believe that what is happening with social media, why its exploding, changing, adapting all the time is because it is giving power back to the people.

A while back I wrote an article titled “SEO, SMO, and Why You Shouldn’t Care” which still gets a ton of traffic. It’s actually a decent article, and worth reading if you haven’t. But I say something at the end that it’s pretty cool (in my own self-promoting opinion):

“Companies and Marketers need to understand that they are no longer able to put a spin on things that make them look new and shiny. They need to engage in a conversation with their consumers, and trust that the loss of control will result in the gain of momentum.”

I agree more now than when I wrote this. Heck, I was just trying to stir things up and get a conversation going at the time.

YOU, my friends, have the power to share what makes you. What defines you. Your opinion, worldview, whatever you want to call it. Share that, because that’s what separates you from everyone else.

Until next time…

When digging through a clearance rack, only one thing is certain: If there is a quality release some

When digging through a clearance rack, only one thing is certain: If there is a quality release somewhere in the rows of forgotten CD’s stashed on the ground, you’re going to have to go through a lot of worthless bull shit, most likely covered with computer generated images of diamonds, cars, money, women, wild animals, and mansions to find it. Thanks No Limit. But how do you know if you are better off buying an album you’ve never heard of, or spending your $2 asking the homeless guy selling newspapers out front to freestyle for you? Although there is never a guarantee, the best way is to stick to names that you recognize. It doesn’t have to be your favorite rapper, it could easily be someone you’ve only heard spit a few verses, or that you know is affiliated with other artists that you like. Yet, sometimes the album cover is so incredibly horrible that you don’t take the time to even read the words written on it. That nearly happened to me the other day.

Check the scenario: I’m looking through the racks at Amoeba, and already have around 5-6 CD’s that I’m happy with. Yet you never know where the gems are, so I don’t stop there, I push myself to look through every Hip-Hop album available on clearance. In the last row of seemingly worthless discs I peep an album cover way too stupid to not take a moment and laugh at. It’s a low budget cartoon of a cigar smoking turkey, adorned in glistening jewelry, a top hat, and coat. Whatever group of people agreed that a fucking turkey was a great way to sell gangsta rap albums deserve to have their eyes gouged out with rusty nails. Yet right as I’m about to move on, I see that it’s actually a King Tee album entitled Thy Kingdom Come. Really? Then hidden under the $1.95 price tag, I make out the words “Produced by Dr. Dre, DJ Quick (Yes they spelled his and practically everyone else’s name on the album wrong), Battlecat, Ant Banks, etc…”. What the fuck? Then I remembered, wasn’t King Tee one of the many rappers signed to Aftermath, who never had his project released? Could this possibly be that album? Astonishingly, despite the pathetic attempt at a cover, and the unforgivable error of misspelling the artist’s name (it’s Tee not T), this is actually the project that Dre was supposed to release in 1998. 4 years later, Greedy Green Entertainment made the album available to the public, but apparently dedicated zero funds towards marketing it. With misspelled names galore, and not even a picture of King Tee anywhere on the product, it is unclear if the artists had anything to do with releasing the material. Still, regardless of the shadiness most likely involved with this record, buying a King Tee album with beats from my favorite West Coast producers for $2 is definitely a hell of a come up.

King Tee – Speak On It (Produced by Dr. Dre)

At the same time, the good doctor didn’t release Thy Kingdom Come for a reason, so I wasn’t going to get riled up yet. I put the disc in, and after a very forgettable intro by Ice T, the record opens up perfectly with the hard hitting, Dre produced, “Speak On It”, which erased all sense of doubt I had about the authenticity or quality of the disc. Straight up, the shit knocks, and it’s West Coast to the core. Lyrically, King Tee gives a solid performance throughout the entire project. While no one verse on any track blew me away, I can’t think of a song which I felt he totally flopped on either. As always his delivery stands out as his most endearing quality. The man exudes ridiculous amounts of confidence with every word. Yet unlike the artists of today, Tela does not allow his swagger on the mic to dumb down his flow. Although his subject matter is pretty much limited to repping the West Coast, destroying his enemies, macking on hoes, getting trashed, and stacking cash, he manages to not get too bogged down in monotony by weaving a fair amount of stories and choosing instrumentals that convey a variety of emotions.

King Tee- Monay Featuring Dr. Dre (Produced by Dr. Dre)

While King Tee is definitely one of the few West Coast MC’s that hip-hop heads can be proud of due to his combination of flow and lyricism with hardcore gangster subject matter, the production on this album is what really stands out. As hard is it may be to believe, there is literally not a single bad instrumental on the whole project. “Let’s Make A.V.” is a classic, smooth and laid back DJ Quik track. When Mexican rapper Frost comes in to spit his verse, the beat seamlessly transitions into a salsa influenced portion, that perfectly exemplifies the superior level of musicality that Quik brings to his beats. Ant Banks provides a great example of 90’s Bay Area Mob sound on the Too $hort assisted “Big Boyz”, and Battlecat provides two funky ass head nodders as well. Yet most fans want to know how Dre sounds on his 8 offerings. While none of the beats would probably make it to your top 10 Dr. Dre instrumentals, he does not disappoint. His sound is most akin to “Keep Their Heads Ringin’” rather than the commercial genius of Chronic 2001, or the super clean yet pretty played out piano based tracks that he’s been delivering for the past 4-5 years. On Thy Kingdom Come Dre provides that heavy, bass laden, West Coast sound that makes you feel bullet proof while listening. Although none of it would have that much of a real chance of topping the charts, it meshes perfectly with Tee’s ultra confident style.

If you love the West Coast sound, this shit will make you want to roll up a fatty, buy a few 40‘s and reminisce on when being from California universally meant that you were not to be fucked with. It’s definitely one of the most impressive albums I’ve found on the clearance rack in a while. It sucks that Aftermath never released it, and as a result the majority of the world will never know that it exists, but I guess that’s how the music world works. At least we don’t have to wait for Tee’s death to experience the fruits of his labor. With this in the library, I’m now waiting for Rakim’s work with Dre to surface, and Crooked I’s Death Row material to hit shelves as well. Far fetched? In this day and age, you never really know.

Jay-Z Discusses Experience of Performing at the World Series

New York, NY – The Yankees making to the World Series has excited many people in New York and all over, if you’re a diehard Yankee fan, then you know the feeling. Alongsidethose fans, Jay-Z has always boasted the representation of his city through their beloved baseball team. Hov has always worn his Yankee fitted cap proudly representing his city to the undying fullest, alongside every other NY artist that takes their city seriously.

It was an experience for Jay-Z to even perform at the opening of this year’s World Series game at the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Alongside R&B vixen Alicia Keys, they performed the powerful New York anthem ‘Empire State of Mind’ for thousands of Yankee fans at the stadium and the millions watching at home. The pivotal track came exactly at the right time, it was as if Hov predicted the Yankees making it to the World Series this year as he released the album just months before.

Hov recently spoke to Mike and Mike in the Morning on ESPN about his incredible experience performing before the opening pitch. He reminisced about being kid walking on the diamond green for the first time.

These were his comments:

“I felt like a kid, the field is beautiful. I’ve never been that close to the field. Walking around, I jumped over the center-field fence and everything, like I was catching a home run.

Incredible, beyond explanation, just the whole fact, being in Yankee Stadium, really interacting, knowing the players. I grew up a fan of the Yankees — Reggie Jackson, Mickey Rivers, Chris Chambliss, God bless Thurman Munson, all these guys. To be there and interact with all these guys [the current Yankee team], they’re throwing the Roc sign up — it’s fantastic.”

Minutes after the performance, he hopped into a Maybach and caught a flight to Canada. Even though he was upset that he couldn’t watch the rest of the game, he kept hope alive as he knew his team could follow through. Yankees lost Game 1.

At press time, Hov’s ‘The Blueprint 3’ has sold over a million copies making this his eleventh solo studio album to go platinum. He is currently promoting the release of DJ Hero alongside Eminem as his music and Em’s are currently on the Renegade Edition of the game following in the same format as Guitar Hero, with the exception of the DJ set.

Hov is still at the top of his game. 11 albums to go platinum, talk about icon status. It must have been an experience to perform at new Yankee Stadium. Must have felt like the first time he performed at Madison Square Garden some years ago. Many experiences through his life and this one will be one of them.

Lil Wayne Goes In Heavy on Rock Album Rebirth

New York, NY – For several years now, Lil Wayne has been known for his albums being pushed back several months, sometimes even over a year. However, within that elapsed period of time he was able to record more material to add or omit from the first draft that was slated for release, so in the end, the delay must have been worth it. This is possibly the reason why Wayne seems to release mixtapes like it was nobody’s business on the regular, and like it or not his dedicated fans follow him ever so closely.

Now even in light of his recent guilty plea to gun possession, his mind is still on the music and still on the focus that his next album will be that of a genre switching complex format, in short he still has his mind set on releasing his debut Rock album. The only difference into that is now it has been amended to be a double disc accompanied by a Young Money compilation. So not only do the fans get to capture the idea of Wayne on guitar, Young Money tracks will be accompanying the Rock album. He recently spoke to Billboard about the upcoming ‘Rebirth,’ and seemed quite enthused and confident about the whole idea. This interview had to be before his court hearing that took place sometime last week.

These were his comments to Billboard concerning his debut Rock album:

“Yes, the album is still rock. I play guitar on 80 percent of the songs, and there’s a lot of rock influences and rock beats. I also have Travis Barker on the album. But I don’t want people to think I’m trying to do something I can’t do. Don’t think you’re going to put on the album and hear me screaming and singing. … Don’t worry about that. [Laughs.] When people hear me say rock, they may get a little scared like, ‘Oh, God. What is he going to do?’ When I said I was doing a rock album, it was about doing a freedom thing. This album isn’t hip-hop. When I do my Carter albums, I know I’ve got to rap, I know I’ve got to spit. I know the words I’ve got to say and the subjects I’ve got to talk about. I also know the things I shouldn’t say, the things I shouldn’t talk about. There’s none of those limits on this album. I say what I want, how I want. That’s what this album is: a freedom album.”

Even though several tracks from that album have leaked online as new material seems to always do, Wayne states that he bought it back to the lab to keep his material fresh and current, I guess the delay came in handy again:

“I had to add new cuts, because a lot of things leaked, making people think they had an idea of what I was doing with Rebirth and what it would sound like and I hated that, because I never want anybody to think they know what I’m doing until I present it. So what I did was make it totally different. I flipped it.”

At press time, that double disc album has been officially slated to be released on December 15, making it just in time for a Christmas present. Wayne is also personally overlooking Drake solo project ‘Thank Me Later’ which he expects should be released early 2010.

In related news, Wayne is due to appear in court on February of 2010 for his sentencing. Keep posted to 24hourhiphop.com for updated news on Lil Wayne.

On the real, I think the only reason Universal has delayed Rebirth so many times are because they have no faith in it. They are afraid that their top selling artist will suddenly flop and the album won’t be accepted by his fans. Either way, for promotional reasons or basically an excuse, they decided to make it a double disc with Young Money to cover a larger genre than that of what Wayne is anticipating.

Video of 50 Cent Going In on Ja Rule. Rick Ross, Fat Joe, and Jay-Z

I found this random video on WorldStarHipHop.com with 50 Cent being interviewed by an unknown DJ Ekin. This interviewer asks 50 some questions about certain artists and 50 goes in on them talking something ridiculous about a death blow, saying he gave those artists a death blow, he is seriously clowning. He even pokes fun at Triple Cs and their upcoming album sales, somebody better tell him that G-Unit sales slumped worse than anyone else’s, he needs to calm down. Either way, 50 also adds some insight into Dre’s mythological ‘Detox’ and clowns on Jay-Z’s age. This shit is ridiculous. Something you need to watch.[HERE]

RE: RE: Dear: SA FM

OK I get it. You probably get thousands of emails a day from people who think they can change the station with vague ideas such as “don’t play shit music” and you may be thinking “oh it’s all well and good to sit atop your high horse and give orders. Come do what we do.” Then allow me to do a rapid dismount. My ideas include:

Less Akon more Dre: Tell Akon to give it up. Dre did it better with ‘Bitches Ain’t Shit’. He wasn’t trying to get on their good side during the corporate hours by telling them they’re “Sexy Bitches” then come evening trying to slip it in while they slept. I’m on to him.

Less Chris Brown more T-Pain: One likes to give a solid beat down. One likes to cruise on boats. I know who I’m going to the afterlife with.

Less Jessica Mauboy Less Guy Sebastian More Shannon Noll More Lisa Mitchell: Nothing good can come of reality TV. Unless it’s Paradise Hotel, that show was great. Perhaps if the premise of Australian Idol was “Let’s give them something to sing for: Their LIFE.” Same deal, except whoever’s in the bottom 3 would go one-on-one with a great white or perhaps a panther. The survivor then gets to come back and do it again the following week. I guarantee you contestants would give 110% to their song choice and we’d get to weed out the Damien Leith’s of the world nice and early. Actually pretend you didn’t read this, I am going to pitch this to Channel Ten. In the meantime play more “Big Black Shiny Car”, that song is hilarious.

Less ‘Better Man’ more ‘Do The Evolution’: Did you know that Pearl Jam have a whole back catalogue of songs on albums? Feel free to play one of them. This also applies to Nirvana ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and ‘Come As You Are’.

Less ‘Haileys Comet’ more ‘Sussidio’: Every time you feel your hand go to the PLAY button ask yourself “Is today the day?” So is today the day that one person flips out from a comet overload? If the answer is “possibly” then quickly go to the emergency programming of Phil Collins – Sussudio or John Farnham – Playing to Win.

Less Lady GaGa more Peaches: Hey GaGa, Peaches called. She wants her look and demeanour back. Whenever you’re ready.

Less Newton Faulkner more James Blunt: If you don’t know this already, I do not rate James Blunt. Check him for a vulva I say. But Newton Faulker is the new Blunt. Who was the new Enrique Iglesias. Who was the new Marc Cohn. Who was the new Rick Astley. Pattern? As there were many before him, so shall there be many after him. Should I take solace in the fact that in 2 months time when “Steve Jones” releases the hit “Baby Girl I’m Gonna Lay You Down And Enter You” which will take the easy listening chart by storm, I will probably be praying for a little “Dream Catch Me”?

How am I doing so far? Do you require more ideas? Don’t bite off more than you can chew, digest these first and then I’ll feed you more in due course. (Too much with the food metaphor?)

First, a brief word of apology to Jefferson Morley, whose excellent and meticulously researched book

First, a brief word of apology to Jefferson Morley, whose excellent and meticulously researched book, Our Man in Mexico: Winston Scott and the Hidden History of the CIA was first mentioned here almost exactly one year ago, with the promise of a review to come…like so many other worthy projects, the review ended up on the back burner (the saltmine beckons and is unusually active at present), but it has not been forgotten. In the meantime, Machetera will say this: the book is terrific – engagingly written, carefully corroborated, it is a must-read for anyone curious about the CIA’s long reach in Mexico, particularly during the period in the fall of 1963 when the CIA did and then didn’t know about Lee Harvey Oswald’s visit to Mexico City in his failed search for a Cuban visa. So get the book, now.

Second, José Pertierra has just published an exclusive interview with Morley at Cubadebate. Normally Machetera resists translating articles written by those with a perfect grasp of English, such as that possessed by Pertierra, not least because translation is invariably an imperfect art and she dislikes second-guessing an interview that undoubtedly transpired in English to begin with. But this interview is exceptionally interesting and important, and as yet, no English version has appeared. So in the meantime, with additional apologies to Morley, and to Pertierra, here it is. A bit of a filmed interview with Morley follows the interview.

Washington – The day that his brother was assassinated, the Attorney General of the United States, Robert F. Kennedy, spoke by telephone with one of the leaders of the terrorist campaign against Cuba, Enrique “Harry” Ruiz-Williams. Kennedy said to him directly: “One of your men did it.” Bobby Kennedy didn’t ask him. He told him. It came from his gut, because he knew those people. That’s how the journalist/researcher Jefferson Morley tells it in an interview he granted Cubadebate.

“The assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963 and the dirty war against Cuba organized by the Miami Cubans are intimately linked: they’re battles in the same war, “ said Morley.

“The anecdote about the conversation between Bobby Kennedy and Ruiz-Williams is well founded,” says Morley, “because the prestigious journalist Haynes Johnson was a witness. He was with Ruiz-Williams during the conversation with Kennedy.”

Jefferson Morley has a long career as a well-known journalist in Washington. He worked for 15 years for the Washington Post and has also been published in the New York Review of Books, the Nation, the New Republic, Slate, Rolling Stone and the Los Angeles Times. Recently, he published a biography of the CIA station chief in Mexico, Our Man in Mexico: Winston Scott and the Hidden History of the CIA. Six years ago he filed suit (Morley v. CIA) against the CIA in order to force the Central Intelligence Agency to declassify documents dating from the period between 1962 and 1964, relative to George E. Joannides, a CIA official charged with many of the operations against Cuba in that period. On November 16th, Judge Richard J. Leon of the U.S. District Court in Washington D.C., will hold a hearing to listen to the arguments of both Morley and the CIA about the possible declassification of these documents.

José Pertierra: Why do you believe the CIA wishes to keep nearly 50 year old documents secret?

Jefferson Morley: Because they may contain something delicate or embarrassing for the CIA. The story that we’re told about Joannides is a show. A lie. According to his own documents which I’ve gone over personally, the story that the CIA tells us now about Joannides doesn’t match reality. The Agency tries to trivialize Joannides’ role in the operations that took place between 1962 and 1964, but history shows us the truth. Furthermore, if the documents being hidden truly do not incriminate the CIA, why do they want them to be hidden? Could it be because Kennedy was killed in 1963? That conditioned reflex to keep this secret hides something.

JP: Who was George E. Joannides?

JM: He was a CIA man whose assignment was to control and direct the Miami Cubans who were in charge of the operations against Cuba at the beginning of the 1960’s. Specifically, he was charged with controlling the Directorio Revolucionario Esudiantil (DRE) [Revolutionary Student Directorate]. The CIA commended him in 1963 for his good work directing the DRE. After the missile crisis in October of 1962, Washington wanted to “reign in” the DRE’s activities, and the CIA put Joannides in charge of that assignment. When the CIA gave him his evaluation in August of 1963, he was congratulated for having “controlled” the DRE.

JP: Who was the DRE?

JM: It was a Cuban organization headquartered in Miami. A CIA analyst told me that the DRE came to be “the most militant of the Miami exile organizations at the beginning of the 1960’s.”

Its leaders were Alberto Muller, Ernesto Travieso and Juan Manual Salvat. Salvat later started a bookstore on Miami’s Calle Ocho, called the Librería Universal [Universal Library]. One of its militants was the young Jorge Mas Canosa, who would later go on to found the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF). The DRE operated from Miami under the direction of a couple of important CIA officers: David Phillips and Howard Hunt.

One of their most well-known violent operations against Cuba took place in August of 1962, when Salvat and a group of DRE militants headed to Cuba from Miami in a small boat and attacked the Hotel Rosita de Hornedo, known after the revolution as the Hotel Sierra Maestra, in Miramar (Havana), at midnight. They attacked the hotel with a cannon, terrorized the guests, and fled. Among the DRE militants who attacked the hotel that night was José Basulto, who would go on to found the Brothers to the Rescue organization in 1995. Basulto told me personally that he was the one who purchased and shot the cannon that was used to attack the Hotel Sierra Maestra that night. He said that he’d bought it in a Miami pawnshop.

(Translator’s note: Morley repudiates the word “terrorized” as it is attributed to him.)

In August of 1963, members of the DRE in New Orleans had a series of encounters with Lee Harvey Oswald. After the assassination of President Kennedy on November 22, 1963, the members of the DRE spread a publicity campaign to insinuate that Castro had assassinated Kennedy, because Oswald was supposedly affiliated with Cuba and the Soviet Union.

JP: George E. Joannides’ official assignment was “Head of psychological warfare for JMWAVE.” What were his responsibilities?

JM: The plan was to affect the psychology of the enemy. To change their perceptions of reality in order to bring about a change in government. The best example is that of Guatemala in 1954, when the CIA orchestrated false news bulletins about an opposition to the Arbenz government, in the Guatemalan jungle. In the end, Arbenz confused fiction for reality and panic set in. Something that never happened to Fidel Castro or Che Guevara. They understood very well the difference between the fiction of psychological war, and reality.

Joannides paid the members of the DRE. He gave them a lot of money. We know that they received $50,000 a month. In today’s currency that’s more than $150,000. It was a lot of money. He was Washington’s man in Miami in charge of the DRE.

The DRE members at that time were the CIA’s favorite Cubans. Under Joannides’ direction, the DRE had four specific tasks:

Political action against Cuba.

Acquisition of intelligence against Cuba.

Distribution of propaganda against Cuba.

Distribution of its actions and propaganda toward Latin America.

JP: What is the connection between Lee Harvey Oswald, the individual who is said to have assassinated President Kennedy in November of 1963, and the DRE? What might the CIA documents tell us about that?

JM: Four months before President Kennedy’s assassination, Oswald and members of the DRE met several times in New Orleans. They had an altercation with him in the street. The DRE sent a member to his house, making him seem like a follower of Fidel. They debated about this on the radio and sent the tape of the debate to Joannides; they even wrote to Congress asking for an investigation of Oswald who at that point in time was an innocuous person. You have to remember that at that time, the DRE had specific instructions to ask for the CIA’s authorization before making any kind of public declaration.

Scarcely an hour after Oswald’s arrest on November 22nd, the DRE leaders published the documentation they’d accumulated against Oswald and in this way influenced the coverage of the assassination by insinuating that a Castro agent had killed the President of the United States.

The Warren Commission, who investigated the assassination, never realized the connection between Joannides’ employees in the DRE and Oswald. Even in 1978, when the House of Representatives Committee on Assassinations hired Joannides as an advisor to its investigation, Joannides didn’t inform the Committee about his role in the events of 1963 and the DRE.

The attorney for the House Committee, Bob Blakey, says that Joannides obstructed the investigation by not divulging the role he played with the DRE.

JP: What are you asking of the CIA with this suit you filed in December of 2003?

JM: I’m only asking that the CIA obey the law. The CIA has told me that it has more than 295 documents that it will not release for reasons of national security. The documents I have show that Joannides traveled to New Orleans to complete tasks that the CIA charged him with in 1963 and 1964. [They show] that the CIA entrusted him with delicate operations throughout 1962-64. We don’t have any information about those operations. Joannides can’t tell us, because he died in 2001. Those are the only documents about what he did in that city with the DRE members. The CIA has the legal obligation to declassify those documents, but it does not want to declassify them. It’s locked them up. I believe that the lockup sources from the CIA department in charge of Latin America. They are hiding something. The CIA tells us that Joannides had nothing to do with the DRE. I know that’s not true. The documents I have in my possession prove that indeed there was that relationship. Why do they make these statements that are so openly false? What are they hiding?

I hope that on November 16th, Judge Richard J. Leon will support my motion to have the CIA declassify these documents, so that they may be studied. This is the only way for us to know what really happened in those two mysterious CIA operations in which Joannides worked in 1963 and 1964.

JP: The CIA says that if these documents are declassified, the national security of the United States will be endangered. Do you know what the danger is?

JM: There’s no danger. Washington has a mistaken perception about what is truly national security. I’m told that they cannot declassify nearly 50 year old documents for reasons of national security. That’s not true.

I don’t know who killed Kennedy, I don’t pretend to know. What I’m asking is that these documents be declassified which have to do with George E. Joannides during 1962 and 1964, in order to clarify the facts. This is not a threat to the country, and the Freedom of Information Act says that they must be declassified. I am only asking that the CIA obey the law.

One of the joys of being a man in his late 50’s is the sheer exquisite experience of the annual physical that includes the delightful DRE (Digital Rectal Examination). While it’s not quite the full blown pleasure of a colonoscopy like we are treated to every several years – 17,000 miles of tubing snaking up your arse and winding its way all thru your instestines until you can taste camera lens on the back of your palate – it is a close second in all time favorite life experiences.

Nov 02, 2009 – “Michael Jackson’s This Is It” pulled in $101 million worldwide in its first five days, and distributor Sony is extending the farewell performance film beyond its planned two-week run. The film was the No. 1 Halloween thriller domestically with a $21.3 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The previous weekend’s No. 1 movie, Paramount’s low-budget horror sensation “Paranormal Activity,” slipped to No. 2 with $16.5 million, lifting its total to $84.8 million. “This Is It” captures Jackson in behind-the-scenes performances in the weeks before his death last June, as he rehearsed his biggest hits for the London shows.

The film, which opened around the globe last week already has earned rousing praise from fans and critics, who say it restores Jackson’s reputation as a world-class entertainer.
