Black people like fried chicken

Black people are usually associated with foods like watermelon, chitlins or grape soda, but the food i hear thats they are mostly associated with is fried chicken.

Now that I’m growing dreads my cool points are on the rise.

Now that I’m growing dreads I feel and look cool as fuck when I smoke weed.

Now that I’m growing dreads when I walk down the street and pass by a Jamaican they yell out “Rastafarian Queen!” and it makes me feel like I belong to a secret club.

Now that I’m growing dreads I find that more white men are attracted to me. I’m not 100% sure why this is but I think that it has to do with the fact that a black womens true beauty comes out more when she wears her natural hair. Naturally!

Now that I’m growing dreads I honestly feel like nobody can tell me shit and nobody has thus far!

Now that I’m growing dreads listening to reggae is a lot more fun!

Now that I’m growing dreads people who knew me before the dreads say things like “okay miss Badu” or ” i see you Lauryn Hill”…I try to front like I don’t like it but I do.

Now that I’m growing dreads I feel obligated to have poetry on deck and ready to be recited when necessary (the pressure is on).

Now that I’m growing dreads people often say they like my new style,which I find funny because I haven’t changed up my wardrobe whatsoever. Dreads just make you cool man.

Last Thursday marked the time I was scheduled to get my hair redone. Not doing anything to my hair for a month was a trial for many reasons. I didn’t have but so many rules to follow. In actuality, I only had two:

Rule #1: Don’t get it wet!

An umbrella and a shower cap would be all I’d need to keep to this rule, so I thought. The shower part, I had covered. I even wore two to be sure. The rain was another story. Well, rain doesn’t always fall straight down. Lo and behold, sometimes it rains at an angle. (That reminds me of an episode of Family Guy where Ollie Williams makes a similar observation.)

My own personal observation: all wetness doesn’t come from the outside! I caught a cold, which is typical since I work with kids. I hadn’t bargained the profuse sweating that happened as my body tried to rid itself of the thing! The whole back of my hair came out! This actually brings me to the second rule I was to follow. This happened not once, but twice.

Rule #2: Re-twist to the left

This I knew I couldn’t screw up. I have a pretty firm grasp of my left from my right. Sadly, I came to discover that I have a pretty firm grasp of my left from my right only when not under the influence of Theraflu and Sudafed. In trying to save my unraveling hair, it became more of a disaster. I didnt know what to do. The faster I twisted, using the Jane Carter stuff, the faster it came out. It was then I realized I was twisting to the right and completely undoing what was left of the slight hint of twists in the back. I will now make a confession: I cheated. The locs wouldn’t stay, so I broke out some extra hold spritz. Spritz shows no mercy, and I was in a desperate place.

So when I got to Miss Pam’s house after work Thursday night, I expected for her to say, “What have you done to your hair?!” To my surprise, she didn’t. She was actually impressed, saying that it looked a lot better than she’d even hoped. Now that, I didn’t know how to take.

I’d bought more Jane Carter Solution products for the occasion: locking spray, shampoo, and conditioner. She washed it, re-twisted it, and put a million clips on it again. Amazingly, this all took about four hours, which was much faster than the last time. I looked at it after she washed it and just knew I was going to be there all night. I still don’t understand how she made her way through what I thought was a tangled disaster area. She cut a good amount of the relaxer out this time too. I was a big girl and didn’t complain about it. It had to be done. I don’t even know why I almost cared. I’m used to my hair being short. I’ve had it cut much shorter than it is now (yes, even with my big head).

Rastaman

Red, gold, and green flags emblazoned with the Lion of Judah fly above swirling clouds of ganja smoke while pulsing bass and driving reggae riddims flow through sound systems stacked ten-feet high. This edition of the World of Reggae Music Collection is entitled Roots and Culture. This first volume of Roots and Culture features the Rastaman. The Rastaman is an integral part of Caribbean culture and the reggae movement.

Rita Marleyintroduced Robert Nesta Marley to the foundations of the Rastafarian religion or “way of life.” She had seen the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I on his visit to Jamaica and had been struck by the spirit on seeing what she believed to be an incarnation of God, Jah Rastafari. Bob Marley and The Wailers later became a great messenger of the “king’s music.”

Bob Marley and The Wailers, the I-Threes (Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, and Marcia Griffiths), Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailerall professed to the wisdom of Jah in their music. Not only did Marley and the Wailer family play roots and culture reggae, but so did the great rastaman icons Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, and Jacob Miller. The Rastafarian-inspired bands The Abyssinians, Black Uhuru, Aswad, Gladiators, The Melodians, The Mighty Diamonds, Steel Pulse, Culture,Wailing Souls, Third World, Israel Vibration, The Itals, and The Heptones rocked reggae for crowds of thousands of listeners and fired the souls and imaginations of millions of fans.

Not only the great reggae bands played tribute to the roots and culture of the rastaman, but so did the finest singjays from Dillinger, Barrington Levy, Ranking Joe, Sizzla, and Luciano to Buju Banton, Half Pint, Capleton, Anthony B, and Konshens. We had a nice and simple Thanksgiving. We spent most of the day at my mothers, and then later with more family as we celebrated and gave thanks for all we have been blessed with.

- Dreads. Vet ni hur ofta jag vaknar på morgonen och tänker “Fan, mössa hela dagen idag igen..”? Aldrig Jag behöver aldrig noja över dåliga hårdagar eller att håret ska se platt eller livlöst ut, behöver aldrig oroa mig för att det ska ta stryk av alla stylingprodukter jag använder. Det är helt enkelt snyggt 24/7. Det är väl en smaksak men min åsikt är och förblir – mer dreads åt folket all hail!

- Brädor. Saknar sommaren och longboard! På vintern åker jag i vanliga fall skidor. Har provat bräda tidigare men min intelligenta far tvingade mig att åka med fel fot fram, haha! “Nej men du är högerfotad, du SKA åka med vänster fram!” – Säkert! Kan inte åka longboard med vänster fram för fem öre, inte undra på att jag aldrig kunnat åka snowboard då…

- Snygga tjejer. Jag har helt olika preferenser för vad som är snyggt för tjejer och killar, förutom dreadheadstilen som gäller för båda. Girly girls är inte riktigt min grej sådär, rent stilmässigt, underliga syntetmaterial och Gina Tricot-modet går bort. Långa tjejer, baggy- eller slitna jeans, linnen och hoodies, kort hår, välplacerade piercingar och tatueringar = hett.

- Vibram FiveFingers. Världens bästa skor i alla kategorier, mitt bästa köp någonsin. Som att gå barfota men med bättre grepp och skydd mot grus och skräp. Grymma till både random promenader och Le Parkour men framför allt longboard! Grepp och känsla är helt beyond vanliga skor. Barfota och tåskor for life. ♥

“Det bor ohyra i dreads!” – de som har dreads aktar sig generellt sett jävligt noga för att få t.ex. löss eftersom det är ett helvete att få bort.
“Dreads är mögliga inuti!” – nej, men de kan mögla om de är fuktiga länge.
“Dreads är smutsigt!” – dreads går att tvätta som vilket hår som helst.

- Shakira. Texten till She Wolf är grym men alla hennes låtar slash videos går ut på en och samma sak – vicka, skaka och slingra med höfterna. Hon kanske har ett hemligt girlpower-budskap med sin musik men det enda jag hör och ser är “knulla knulla knulla knulla sätt på mig knulla knulla seksi knulla sex säljer jäähh!”. Sen tycker jag hennes röst är nasal på ett obehagligt sätt så då är det pretty much kört. No can do, shakehhra.

- Byråkrati och fanskap. Konsumtionssamhälle, pengar, handlingstid, alliansen, regler, lagar, all världens fanskap och djävulen bor i Alfa-kassan. Pengar till de rika och skatter till de fattiga, vilken bra idé. Heja Sverige I-land deluxe, “här tar vi hand om alla våra invånare!” my fat fucking ass. Suck, stön och misär. Fuck the systsem – cus the systsem just fucked you.

- Foki. Fan om inte kändisskapet har stigit henne åt huvudet ändå. Jag känner henne inte och har inget emot henne men hon känns sjukt dryg i bloggen. Till exempel “Hur har du fått din blogg så känd?” – “Vet inte!” i senaste frågestunden. Hon kanske kunde ha svarat som det var – att Blondinbella länkade henne. Fokis.se gick från halvmysig (när det faktiskt handlade om Foki själv) till prylhets, prylhets, restaurangmiddagar och prylhets. Kawaii desu opersonligt snark.

I used to think that I would never interlock for two reasons: (1) I thought it took much time (2) I was native to only palm-rolling. It appeared interesting and tempting at the same time. Why? Because you didn’t have to worry about your locs unraveling at the root….or at all, for that matter. However, I did not want to worry about the texture of my locs changing or run the risk having little bumpy knots from inaccurately interlocking. So why the change of heart you ask? Well, I shall tell you why (very short story, actually). One afternoon, I was riding back from another county with a couple of coworkers. While they were yacking on their phones, the slightly irritable-from-hunger My4tress needed something to dwindle time away while she waited for the stoplight to change for the turning lane in 5 o’clock traffic (instead of twiddling my thumbs).  I subconsciously started playing with my locs of course. Next thing you know, I was weaving the root (interlocking) the back locs. They’re usually the ones to unravel at the root much quicker than the rest of my locs. As I felt for what I’ve done, I realized that I did it pretty well; no lumpy knots. I rolled the loc in one direction to see how it would’ve looked/felt if I palm-rolled the interlocked part later. No difference. Hmm! I was quite pleased. So I learned that if you do not interlock too tightly and not in the same direction, you have a nice result that will not change even if you palm roll later. You want to interlock as closely as possible to the already locked part of your locs. However, if you did it incorrectly, you will end of with:

(1) separated roots

(2) if palm-rolled, a twisted part

(3) a hole in the middle of your loc.  (I put a q-tip inside of the hole so you could identify it easier.)

FYI: Interlocking becomes addictive when your hands are idle or if you don’t have nothing to do (lol) and doesn’t take as long as you think.

Next thing you know, all of my locs have been interlocked. So, I washed my hair just last week expected to roll some roots, when I looked at the mirror and barely saw any puffiness (a sign of a root(s) needing retwisting). That saved me a lot of time.

(I’m going to try to do a vid on interlocking; however, letting you know now that I’m not an expert interlocker, lol.)

This is the third in a series of posts about some new releases from Blowpop that I’m really loving. In addition to the cute triangle bra & boyshort sets, and the three goddesses set, we’re treated to lots of colorful camis.  The Blue Roses cami made for a great casual top, and I cruised around the grid in this outfit for a couple of days.

I’d say that 99.9% of the time, I’m not at all fond of wearing t-shirts in SL that feature a store logo and I know from previous discussions on Plurk that I’m not the only one who feels this way. I’m more than happy to make an exception for these tops from Blowpop, though! The Sailor Jerry styled artwork is beautiful and displays Blowpop’s (slightly naughty sounding!) catchphrase, “Lick, Don’t Bite”.

Also worn is LAQ’s Jewel skin, a fairly recent addition to the Glow Skins collection.  Jewel is quite stunning, and is available in darker skintones (you can see more of the tones and makeups below).  I seem to gravitate toward boots a lot in SL; maybe this is because I never get to wear them in RL?  I live in Hawaii and the only time you ever really need to wear boots here is when you’re doing yardwork or gardening, lol.  But anyway, I was long overdue for some updated cowboy boots and I finally recently splurged on J’s Western Boots.  Finishing off the look is my favorite new hair, a sculpted dreadlocks style from booN.  booN has a whole bunch of dreadlocks that look incredible and I’m hoping that the selection will grow in the future.

As with the three goddesses tops, the Blue Roses camis are available in both long and short lengths as well as on a variety of clothing layers to maximize your mix and match potential.  They’ve been made in a bunch of colors, and they go perfect with the lowrise boyshort undies.  I think it’s the perfect combination for chilling out in your skybox with your closest friends.

Det kommer bli så äckligt snyggt. Baaahh pengar!

Snart blir det sängen för min del. Ska upp imorgon och städa järnet medan vi har dagsljus. Allergierna kommer flöda alltså, både jag och Robin är känsliga mot damm – speciellt Robin som har allergisk astma. Stackarn. Får springa runt med dammsugaren och vifta i luften, haha. Allergier suger, damm är knappast hans enda, han är dödligt allergisk mot en hel del saker. Jag har tur som bara är superallergisk mot katter.

På tal om Robin så hittade jag en gammal bild igår. En av de första som togs på oss tillsammans, tagen i vintras hos Anna, precis när hon höll på att göra mina dreads. ♥

Haha, Robin var alldeles korthårig och välrakad! Han försökte tvinga mig att gå till en spegel och kolla på mitt hår och jag försökte slingra mig. ♥

I have finally finished spinning the 4kg bulk order of merino slub yarn, and the first kilo is already swimming in the dyepot. Man I can’t wait for the yarns to be fully painted and dried so I can feel really good about the results. Here they are waiting to get some colour:

I also finished some new handpainted slub yarns for my ebayUK store, they are all of super bulky yarn weight and sold in small quantities so people can choose various colours for smaller projects, like e.g. freeform knitting, felting and also for dreadmaking of course!

Plus I drum carded a gorgeously soft handpainted lot of 4 merino wool batts this morning, which I have also displayed in my ebayUK store. The colours are really wonderful, all warm and earthy shades of lilac, peach, apricot and lemon, YUMMY!

I am currently spinning the same colours into a fingering weight yarn. Something I hadn’t had time for while I was working on the slub yarn order, so now I am thoroughly enjoying spinning a very fine yarn for a change )

It has been quite warm again recently, we are talking about 16-20 degrees Celsius, which is very unusual for November, and I don’t like it.  My blood pressure plays up, and I feel dizzy most of the day when the temperature jumps up and down like this. Nevertheless I am preparing for advent and christmas time,  I have to admit that if my sister hadn’t mentioned advent I would have forgotten about it, drowning in yarn orders and making fresh soap batches day and night,  no wonder I sometimes lose track of what season is currently up and around…Last week we there was a huge rainstorm pouring down for hours and hours.  Towards sunset the sky started clearing on the edges, and this is what it looked like -  It was very impressive and so breathtaking!!!!!!

Below is my advent wreath I bought 2 days ago. Over here in Germany we celebrate the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Sunday until christmas eve by lighting a candle for each Sunday, meet with friends, bake christmas cookies and stollen, drink a lot of tea and  be merry and reflective…yes, people also go to church of course, but I admit that I am not too crazy about that part. I prefer to worship the supreme power through my work and through being with my family.

Well, it’s time for me to get back to the dyepot.  Everyone have a very good weekend!

Wait a minute what is going on here with Shakira? Shakira was in attendance at the Rolling Stone Magazine partay and she debuted her new hair do, dreads! Apparently, Shakira will be transforming herself into a Rastafari aka she loves her some verde! I will have to wait and see this transformation occur. This makes me curious because Shakira has been talking to Beyawnce about the industry and I hope that Shakira didn’t take Beyawnce’s advice to also transform into an alter ego! *sigh*

I felt like carding today and finished some mighty fine merino/silk blends! They are now out and displayed in my ebayUK store, and here they are, have a look:

Det är då tur att Robin gillar mig ändå. I quote;

I love it when people try to tell me all about my hairstyle.

Like: You know you’re going to have to shave your head to get rid of those, right?

Do they honestly think that I wouldn’t look into removal techniques BEFORE I dreaded my own hair?
Or do they really just think they know more about dreads than I do?

Or when my friends jump all over my back when I mention the words dreadlocks and hippie in the same sentence…
“Dreads are NOT hippie! They’re reggae!”

Really? Screw you. They can be what I want them to be.

Yippieh, finally almost all of my latest yarns and fibers have made it off the wool rack! Handspun & handpainted extra soft merino slub yarns (= thick and thin yarns), handpainted fine wensleydale fleece locks for all feltmakers, handspinners and dollmakers, and ultra soft handpainted merino-silk rovings, all now out and displayed in my ebayUK store. Here they are in all their splendor:

There are some more rovings and also a new set of custom made felt strings that I haven’t taken any photos of yet, but I will display them in my next blog. Until then, everyone have a very find autumn season!!!!

The Friday morning before my wedding I got together with a few of my best home boys and rocked the AM! Chris was in town from Arkansas and since he was the reason the AM game started we had to hit up Irving. I seriously miss Chris cause that dude rarely missed the AM Game. Maybe all my gifts and begging made him want to move back to D-Town!

Jesse was also holding down my bachelor AM session. Jesse has been on my butt about the AM game but new jobs and weddings have been messing up my schedule. But hopefully soon we can get back on the AM!

My hair is becoming a burden…again. It’s more trouble than its worth to wash is because it takes hours to dry (during which it basically smells like a wet dog..embarrassing to say the least).

I hate my hair and I always have.  It’s not quite straight, not quite curly, super thick, and generally uncontrollable.  During middle school Bryan used to push me down in the snow and make it stick straight up like a troll doll then proceed to call me “Don King”.  Once I did pigtails and they stood straight out like Pippi Longstocking.  Someone asked me if I had put wires in there.  No, I did not.

My hair was a problem early on.  Judy used a pic and lots of hairspray to wrangle it into the pigtails I wore to school almost everyday until grade 6.  Then I graduated on to straightening; a process that smelled bad, took way too long, and damaged my hair.  Wade tried to get me to embrace it.  He would ask, “If you had a choice, would you keep your hair or have straight blonde hair like a Barbie doll?”.  After I gave him the truthful answer the first time and felt his hand across my cheek, I knew to answer, “My hair.  I love my hair” as enthusiastically as I could muster.  But he always knew I was lying and I would get slapped twice as hard. 

By high school, I had enough and cut it all off.

People that know me post 2003 are often shocked that I had no hair for years.  I still remember the liberation of the first time I shaved it all off with Nick Garklavs watching in Eddie’s Family Hairshop.  I wore a winter hat to hide it from my mother for months.  Her fury was palpable when she finally figured it out.  I don’t know if she was mad that I had done it or if she was obvious to it.  For years I kept it shaved.  It was low maintainance, easier to dye, and didn’t cost anything.  Itzy was my personal headcutter because when I did it myself I always missed spots.

It certainly came at  a cost during high school because I was the only girl with no hair but it was well worth the price.  In college, plenty of the feminazis had little to no hair so it was no big deal there.  After a few years, the frequent haircuts started to annoy me so I just let it grow but didn’t brush or comb it. If you ask me, I tell people that I’m on a mission to avoid a haircut for 10 years but really, I just made that up.  The first time I said it, it sounded good, so I’ve stuck with it.  Truthfully, I would like to keep my dreads until my 10 year high school reunion but I don’t know if I will make it.

We’re over 24 inches now and it’s really trying my patience.  And as for what I’ll do after dreads, I haven’t quite figured that out.  I envision a pair of pink scissors, hair on the bathroom floor, and one fucked up haircut,
