What is Moral Fiber? As per one of the definition on the internet — “The one thing you find that makes you completely happy. The one thing you can’t live without. Once you find your moral fiber, you continue to chase after and do whatever it takes to help your moral fiber.”

Hmm..what a meaningful set of lines and a simplest of the descriptions to what i would want to interpret as the “Secret to Happyness”( using a “y” instead of “i” in happiness as inspired by the movie “Pursuit of Happyness”). Though it might look easier at once to identify your Moral Fiber but trust me it is not. One big reason why its such a difficult task is because we always have a list of things what we want instead of one single thing, which can make us completely happy and without which there is no life for us. Are you able to think just this one thing now??

The answers could be YES or the answer could be NO. If the answer is YES than you know your Moral Fiber and you are working for it, which is a healty thing as your are clear about the meaning of your life to a large extent and moving closely to the happyness of your life. But if your answer is NO then you dont have a Moral Fiber, you are still a confused personality who does not have a fixed priority in life and you are still searching the answer from thyself about that onething, which really matters to you in life.

There is one another meaningful definition of Moral Fiber which says – “Moral fiber is the capacity to do what is right, no matter what the circumstance”. So, it means if somebody offers a bribe to me, I should not take it and do the work in best possible way i can even after declining the bribe. Au contraire, I got reminded of the famous dialogue of the movie “Girl Next Door”, which said – “Moral fiber’s about finding that one thing you really care about. That one special thing that means more to you than anything else in the world. And when you find it, you fight for it. You risk it all, you put it in front of everything, your life, all of it. And maybe the stuff you do to help her isn’t so clean. You know what? It doesn’t matter. Because in your heart you know, that the juice is worth the squeeze. That’s what moral fiber’s all about.” Both the statements are in contrast, the former believes in doing the right things, more ethically correct orthodox ways of doing a thing and the later emphasized more on the results than the non-ethical and politically wrong ways of achieving the Moral Fiber. I dont know which one is wrong but what i feel is both conditions are situational, in one i may follow strict ethics and in other i may not.

Moral Fiber is most famously used in America, which is a very correct statement as outside America people dont even know what it is. American’s are so much in obsession with Moral Fibers that they claim – “Moral fiber the core strength of America. Moral fiber is a strong, truthy strength that is found in True Americans. A person with Moral fiber can stand up to anything the liberals of the world can throw at them. People with Moral fiber are always Christians and Republicans. They oppose gay marriage, abortion, peace, and high taxes.”.

But I think everybody in life has a Moral Fiber despite of the race, region or cast. Only thing important is how soon an individual realize it or he ever realize it? This is really tricky but almost 85% of the people around the world are not sure of what they want, and they dont have a Moral Fiber and the worst is they dont even realize in their whole lives. Moral fiber can only be achieved by self realization. The sooner we realize, the sooner the life changes and the better life we live. The life filled with satisfaction and grief. So, better find your Moral Fiber soon and live the life of your dreams.

posted by: audra maybe not quite a nightmare, but the new-ish steven sebring film dream of life docu

posted by: audra

maybe not quite a nightmare, but the new-ish steven sebring film dream of life documenting ten years of patti smith’s life isn’t such a dream. i had such, such excruciatingly high hopes for this little gem. i love me some patti, & even after reading some not-so-great reviews i still wanted to believe this would become my new favorite film. it was showing at cinema 21 for like, a day, & i totally dropped the ball & missed it. sigh. the days leading up to the film’s release, i replayed the trailer over & over; goosebumps every time:

doesn’t that look so amazing?! even after watching the film, the trailer still makes me all giddy & squealy.

…but, the film itself is just sort of a mishmash of really beautiful cinematography set to patti yammering in her native poetic tongue. i read someplace — i think in entertainment weekly? — that instead of an intimate biopic about patti & getting to know her, you leave the film knowing less about her than you did before. that’s so true; she comes off completely nuts, which is okay, but i wanted something a little bit more personal, & less babelogue. maybe that’s how she really is, all the time though…? is that what she’s going for; the mysterious ‘i’m-way-more-evolved-than-you’ vibe? whatever. i had the uh-mazing experience of meeting patti in the summer of 2007, her wonky eye & all. bless her. wandering around looking like a homeless woman. i must’ve startled her with all my lip gloss when i spat out that she was my idol; she looked me up & down, but of course greeted me politely. i’ve never been so self-concious of wearing black lace with heels in all my life.

anyway. sebring’s work in dream of life is gorgeous. every scene is like a photograph…it somewhat reminded me of anton corbijn. it’s just the material that’s lacking, like a boring reality show that they neglected to edit the bad parts out of. however, the one thing i did learn, is that patti lives in detroit. really. either i know too much about her already, or it’s really this uninformative. spending ten years on a film, you’d think it would give away something really painfully revealing. oh well. perhaps her inner most secrets that make her so fucking cool are best kept so. i still want to devour each & every bit of her. it doesn’t get any cooler than patti. ever. it just doesn’t.

Not the busiest of culture weeks this week. On Monday, I went with John to see Patti Smith – Dream Of Life at Chapter. Now, Patti Smith is one of those artists who, despite having seen her name mentioned over and over again in music magazines, somehow I’d managed to avoid my whole life. I knew very little about her and had never knowingly heard her music. So, a documentary about her seemed as good a place to start as any. Not so. Dream Of Life, made over 10 years, is not the best way to learn about Patti Smith. In fact, documentary isn’t really the right word to describe it. There were few hard facts (apart from a list of when she’d recorded albums, married, had children, when people died etc. read out at the beginning, almost as if to get all the details out of the way before the film got going); instead, the film was more like an impressionistic, poetic attempt to give you an idea of what Patti Smith is like. And, on the whole, it worked. For what it was, it worked anyway, which meant that I left feeling a little disappointed that I didn’t really learn as much as I wanted to. And, I did almost fall asleep at one point but put me in any darkened room and I’ll often nod off. Oh yeah, there was this bit too when her and her mate took a trumpet and a clarinet down to the beach and just made parping noises with super earnest, ‘we really MEAN this’ faces on that was a bit excruciating. However, this scene was redeemed by the middle-aged man then walking on his hands on the beach, something I intend to learn how to do.

After this I came home and, on the advice of Lisa, watched a new comedy sketch show on BBC 4 called Cowards. I was pretty dubious about this, I’ll be honest. When was the last time you saw a sketch show on telly that you liked? However, I really enjoyed this. It wasn’t, like, totally amazing laugh out loud funny, but it’s new and it was the first episode so I’ll allow them some slack. It had lots of good ideas and reminded me in places of Big Train, which is always a good thing.

The next day, John and I watched Insomnia, recorded from V+. I thought I’d recorded a film set in Alaska with Al Pacino and Robin Williams that I’d seen and quite enjoyed before. However, it turned out that the Alaska one was a remake and I’d recorded the original, which was a Swedish film, set in Norway. In all honesty, the original and the remake, whilst different, were of similar quality, entertainment-wise. The biggest difference is that the Al Pacino one felt much more like a proper film whereas the Swedish was a bit like watching a long episode of Prime Suspect or something.

I started volunteering at the Oxfam shop on Whitchurch Road this week, which meant that I was able to get in some quality time with my iPod. In anticipation of this, I subscribed to a couple of BBC podcasts. First was Dr Karl And The Naked Scientist, a podcast about new science stuff. I’ve only recently become interested in science, having had a lifetime of buffoonery when it came to the subject previously. This is best exemplified by a double E at GCSE Science and being placed on the bottom group of the subject, where the most science we ever really did was melting our biros into amusing shapes with the bunsen burners. Anyway, this podcast was OK. Not sure I’ll be a regular because I think my mind does tend to wander a bit too easily if I even vaguely start to lose the thread. I also subscribed to Material World, which seems to be pretty similar to Dr Karl actually. Again, it was alright. THis one did have a German man with the most brilliant voice ever in it though. He talked about ants. I’ve also been giving the Animal Collective album a lot of listens and think I’ve now made up my mind about it. It’s a good album but definitely not their best and definitely not worthy of the hype it’s been given. In my opinion, Feels, Sung Tongs and Strawberry Jam are all better albums. But somehow, the world seems to have spun around to them in time for this album and not the others. So, people have jumped on it where the others were less gushed over. It could be that or it could be that Merriweather Post Pavilion is their most commercial effort yet. But I’m not sure it is. The sound of the album is denser, more impenetrable than the others and the melodies just don’t seem as strong or memorable to me.

I’m pretty sure everyone at gaycondo is in love with Patti Smith. While I am a relatively new Patti Smith fan (Jon urges me to listen to her circa early 2007), a couple of her albums have changed my perception of the innovation that occurred during the late 70’s.

My favorite albums include The Patti Smith Group’s Radio Ethiopia, Horses (duh) and Gone Again. I like all of these albums because they are emotionally resonant, instrumentally diverse and take chances in expressing oneself through the psychedelic layering of spoken word. Seeing Patti Smith live for the first (and currently only) time in summer of 2007 is one of my all time favorite live concert going experiences.

That being said, I hope at least one of us can get away from work or the overhanging cloud of the election to catch Steven Sebring’s documentary on Smith, Dream Of Life, at Cinema 21 this week.

The documentary film has been recognized by several international film festivals – including Sundance – and delves into the public, political, artistic and private life of Patti Smith, narrated through her own words and performances…

WATCH THE PREVIEW!

Hopefully, the actual documentary will be more captivating…

Sebring’s documentary also appears in paper form as a book sharing the same title. It acts as an accompaniment to the film and boasts 429 pages of unpublished photographs, intimate and artistic quotes. It also includes Smith’s own polaroids and photographs that previously remain unpublished.

Hey Guys!

If any of you or people you know are fans of punk rock, poetry, independent films, or just PATTI SMITH, you HAVE TO go see the documentary Patti Smith: Dream of Life! It’s a documentary from Palm Pictures. STEVEN SEBRING, director of the film, followed Patti Smith around with cameras for many years and put it all into this film. It was first released into the film festival circuit, winning the best cinematography award in a documentary at Sundance Film Festival, and then went on to be released at a bunch of art houses across the country. I saw it at the first showing in New York at the Film Forum. IT… WAS… GREAT!

The cinematography is incredible, consisting of a sundry mix of both color and black and white. It features Patti Smith’s concerts, poems, and artwork that she has done during the process of filming the documentary. It’s a pretty introspective piece, dealing mostly with the inside emotions and the concept of finding out who “you” are.

With the release of her revolutionary debut, Horses, Patti Smith solidified her place in the vibrant music scene of 1970s New York City. From then on, she has displayed talent in many roles; she’s a soul sister to the singer, a friend to the author, a peer to the painter, a poet laureate to the punks, a sympathizer to the radical, a muse to modern musicians, and a goddess to her fans. At age 61, Smith is as prolific and inspirational as ever. In addition to being the subject of Steven Sebring’s documentary, Dream of Life (which opens in San Francisco this week), she is still touring, bringing her unrivaled live show to town.

(Sarah Sander)

Fri Sep 12, 2008 at 09:00:30 AM

Dream of Life is a new documentary about Patti Smith directed by photographer Steven Sebring. Dream has already won an Excellence in Cinematography Award at the Sundance Film Festival where it was hailed as the definitive portrait of the singer. This is an extraordinary compliment, given Smith’s expansive history in music, alone. Dating back to Horses, her striking 1975 debut album, there’s plenty of ground to cover in her professional adventures and there’s also public interest in her secretive personal life.

Filmed over the course of eleven years, the documentary contains live performances, photographs, interviews and her art. This mixed-media approach is the only method that would befit a mixed-media life. Smith is known as a singer, musician, artist, activist, poet, painter, feminist, revolutionary, writer, hippie, punker and goddess, and it is quite a task to present all of these elements in a standard-length film.

The biopic provides an account of her evolution as an artist during a time that most others at her age would be retiring. As an artist Smith is still prolific, allowing her love of words and history to permeate all of her other projects. In fact, it seems as though her prominence has only grown throughout the years. Her singing performances are still transcendent. In concert she seems to tap into some sort of witchy shaman vibe, and behind the power of her presence on the stage and a bright smile the 61-year-old seems both eternally youthful and positively invincible.

The film screens as part of the Webster Film Series at 8 p.m. from Thursday, October 2, to Saturday, October 4.

Put this on your life-or-death-must-see list for September. A new documentary about rock god/poet/artist/activist/genius Patti Smith premieres next month. The film, entitled Patti Smith: Dream of Life, was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize and won the Cinematography award at Sundance.

The finished product is a result of 11 years of filming by director Steven Sebring, and I’ve heard it’s a poem of a documentary. Most excitingly, Smith narrates the film, which just finished a four-day preview at the Film Forum in New York. Luckies!

There’s also a companion book coming out, which I can’t wait to get my hot little hands on. Plus, you might want to pick up Patti Smith & Kevin Shields’ (of My Bloody Valentine) recently-released CD “The Coral Sea.”

March 21 – April 19 Aries
Your pioneering, confident, energetic Aries self is probably looking at the calendar right now and saying, hmm – August – gotta hit the open road. It’s that time. Well, if you can afford the gasoline, go for it, you Ram you. If not, take a gander at Susan Session Rugh’s great new book Are We There Yet? The Golden Age of American Family Vacations. It’s a cultural history of the quintessential middle-class family vacation from the mid 40’s to the early 70’s. Rugh, an associate professor at Brigham Young University, presents a captivating subject in the first study of its kind. For those who remember being packed into the family car with your annoying little brother and driving across the highways of the USA, playing geography or other car games to pass the time, staying in little motels or camping out under the stars, learning about the country’s history by visiting its monuments, this book is a truly enjoyable read.

April 20 – May 20 Taurus
May 1, 1967 was the date that Elvis Presley wed his long time girlfriend Priscilla Beaulieu. And thanks to Mattel (they’re swell) you can now purchase a set of Elvis and Priscilla wedding day Barbies, dressed in replicas of their wedding attire, though the Priscilla doll could use a lot more eye makeup and her bouffant hair do isn’t as frozen in place as the real Mrs. P’s was that day. The packaging also contains a sticker reading Direct from Graceland. I don’t know about you, but this is one of those times where I just say – I don’t care what I have to do without; I gotta have this item. Although the real-life Elvis-Priscilla union only lasted 5 years, your dolls will live forever in the first romantic blush of their wedding day.

May 21 – June 20 Gemini
Rosanne Cash is our Gemini this week simply because she kicks ass and takes names. She was born in 1955 to country music legend Johnny Cash and his first wife Vivian Liberto right around the time Cash’s career was starting on its upward trajectory at Sun Records. She started her own career by singing backup for her dad, has written essays and fiction for The New York Times, Rolling Stone, New York Magazine and other publications, has a few books out as well, and is a Grammy Award winning singer and songwriter. Her most recent CD, Black Cadillac, received widespread critical acclaim in 2006 and she’s working on a new one now. Plus she’s an active and fascinating member of the blogosphere with Mrs. L’s Monthly. She writes about everything from books she’s reading to concerts she went to the best hotel room on tour, to outrage over school shootings, to the sorry state of the world, to family and friends and life.

June 21 – July 22 Cancer
The Zodiac sign of the Crab brought us guitar virtuoso Nils Lofgren, whose career began at the tender age of 17 when he joined Neil Young’s band and contributed to the acclaimed platinum album After The Gold Rush. He’s played with all the masters, and in fact is a master himself, and by the way also – it so happens – the nicest guy in the world. He joined Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band in 1984 and used to be introduced onstage by El Jefe as “a man as sweet as life itself.” That’s no joke. Not only does Nils have a new CD out – The Loner-Nils Sings Neil – solo acoustic versions of classic Neil Young songs (available on his website) but he also has a online guitar clinic on his website with downloadable quicktime lessons for the unbelievable bargain price of $20 per session. Seriously, what are you waiting for?

July 23 – August 22 Leo
Find an awesomely cool birthday gift for your Leo friends at the wildly entertaining cyber-store Uncommon Goods. Everything from a set of Hula Rocking Glasses to a Dear Diary hidden compartment flask to the Secret Lives of US Presidents Trivia Card Game to adult sock monkey slippers – all here, and much, much more. Every time I break out the credit card to purchase a unique gift here, the accolades come back in spades. And best of all, they feature handmade, recycled and organic products and are a part of the Social Venture Network (along with Ben and Jerry’s and Google), a socially conscious network of business that value healthy communities and the human spirit as well as high returns.

August 23 – September 22 Virgo
Intelligent, genuine, conservative Virgo – I have the perfect radio station for you folks. You’ll dig the blue jeans off of Sirius Satellite Radio’s brilliant Outlaw Country channel, Steven Van Zandt’s sanctuary for the rebels and renegades, rabble rousers and rogues of country music. They’re all here: Dylan, Loretta Lynn, Steve Earle, David Allan Coe, Emmylou Harris, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and of course all generations of the Hank Williams Dynasty. DJ’s include Shooter Jennings, Cowboy Jack Clement, Dallas Wayne, and truckin’ music authority RigRocker. Come in, come in, breaker 1-9. Dial up this station and open a tall cold one.

September 23 – October 22 Libra
The sense of harmony and balance that is enjoyed by our Libran friends will thrill to a visit to Clayton, the Pittsburgh home of art patron and industrialist Henry Clay Frick. More than 90 percent of the original family artifacts still reside in this beautiful 23 room Victorian mansion that sits on a remarkable tract of land in the residential neighborhood of Point Breeze. Also on the property: Frick’s collection of vintage automobiles, and the full sized children’s play house. You can also have a lovely, sedate afternoon tea in the Frick Café and visit nearby Frick Park.

October 23 – November 21 Scorpio
Scorpio, thy name is independence. Passion. Intensity. Well, all those and more can be found in the storied life and career of Pittman, NJ’s own Patricia Lee Smith AKA Patti Smith, American singer-songwriter-artist-poet. Get your seductive, art loving self over to the Film Forum to see Dream of Life, the just released intimate portrait of Smith by photographer Steven Sebring, who followed her around for ten years making this film. I still remember that revelatory moment when I first heard Land (from Horses) on headphones in my college listening lounge, and realized that this woman did, as she said, hold the key to the sea of possibilities. The word genius comes close. Ever since then it’s been, for me, a brainiac amour.

November 22 – December 21 Sagittarius
Sagittarians can satiate that nagging centaurian sweet tooth with a delectable treat from Tate’s Bake Shop – physically located in Southampton, Long Island but also available in many many retail outlets throughout the New York region. Truly, their goodies are TDF – cookies, cakes, brownies, blondies, pies, you name it… they have it, and no one does it better. The crispy baked just right chocolate chip cookies literally are heaven on earth. You can order online too. There’s even a cookbook available now which includes the chocolate chip cookie recipe.

December 22 – January 19 Capricorn
There are Capricorns and there are Capricorns. But there was only one Edgar Allen Poe, born January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Celebrate his genius with a visit to Edgar’s Café on W. 84th Street, tucked away on the block between Broadway and West End Avenue, so named because Poe lived in this building in 1844 and 1845 and even penned The Raven here. This UWS landmark is dreamy and quiet, an oasis from the shopping frenzies taking place but a few steps away on Broadway. The salads and sandwiches are great, but they are mostly known for their many and varied amazing desserts and coffee drinks. Order yourself a slice of cognac pumpkin cheesecake and ponder over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, who knows there might also come a tapping, rapping at the chamber door, only this and nothing more. Or not…

January 20 – February 18 Aquarius
The internets never ceases to amaze and delight, n’est-ce pas Mr and Mrs Aquarius? When prepping this column I often delve into the endless toybox the world wide web provides for inspiration. And it never disappoints. This morning’s discovery: Hotels of the Rich & Famous. This site reports on celebrity sightings at various establishments around the globe and also interviews the aforementioned R&F about their favorite places to park their multiple cases of Louis Vitton luggage. Did you know that Johnny Depp favors the St. Mary in Jamaica, the Hotel Jerome in Aspen, and the Beverly Hilton? Natalie Portman likes to hang her hat at the Ritz-Carlton in New York and the Portobello Hotel in London? That Hotel Borg is the favored dwelling of celebs and politicos since 1930 in Reykjavik, Iceland and has hosted William Faulkner, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marlene Dietrich?

February 19 – March 20 Pisces
Feed that squishy, romantic Piscean side of yourself with a visit to Only Hearts, long a staple on the Upper West Side (79th and Columbus) and now with a location in Nolita (Mott between Prince and Spring). Et voila, here’s a whole store full of heart-themed gifts from lockets to notecards to picture frames. Owner Helena Stuart has also started her own clothing line of what she calls inner outerwear, lingerie that can be worn as streetwear. Don’t forget the words of Kurt Cobain: She eyes me like a pisces when I am weak; I’ve been locked inside your heart shaped box for weeks.

Permit us to discard our usual dispassionate voice and urge those interested in Patti Smith and her work to see this film. Steven Sebring’s movie, filmed over twelve years, is both entertaining and deeply moving, one of the most intimate portraits of an artist we have ever seen. If you are interested in Patti and her work, you will love “Patti Smith: Dream of Life”.

Just today we learned that the film won the Best Documentary prize at the 29th Durban International Film Festival, with this citation:

“exquisitely and sensitively filmed, this documentary goes to the heart of its subject. It captures the passion, calm, poetry and venom of an incredible human being. The film weaves us through historically charged footage right through to the present and allows us glimpses at an uncompromising and consistent energy that has always believed in the empowerment of all.”

Here is a message which director Steven Sebring sent yesterday:

Dream of Life: A Meditation on Aging and Mortality

Patti Smith: Dream of Life is a film that’s been 12 years in the making, a work that reveals an intimate, impressionistic portrait of a woman who is still blazing her own trail through late middle age, a woman who has seen and suffered great loss and who is perhaps the only major surviving connection from New York City’s Beat generation, to the 1970s Manhattan art scene, to the birth of punk, to the present.

For the most part, the film has been described as a paean to life, resoundingly joyous and elegiac, warm and vibrantly present, a collage of moods and moments from one immensely talented woman’s richly lived time on earth. Patti Smith arrived in the big city 40 years ago and made her first residence in a room at The Chelsea Hotel, which in those days was also home to William S. Burroughs, Jefferson Airplane, Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Sam Shepard, Arthur Miller, Robbert Mapplethorpe and some of the Warhol crowd. Patti soon became the muse, friend and partner of Robert Mapplethorpe, became a poet and then a performance poet and then an underground rock musician and then a rock star. She left the stage and the city to settle down in Michigan as a wife and mother. Then, following the 1994 death of her husband, the musician Fred “Sonic” Smith, she returned to New York City, to music, to poetry and to political activism.

Dream of Life is a beautiful and occasionally haunting artistic creation, a meditation on aging and mortality, an intimate study of an unusual kind of fame and the portrait of a genuinely remarkable person. The film as received with great acclaim at The Sundance Film Festival last year, as well as in Berlin and all over the film-festival world.

The videos presented below include the official trailer of Patti Smith: Dream of Life, Hope (another selection from Dream of Life); a short documentary about Smith’s invited exhibition at The Cartier Foundation in Paris; an interview with Smith at the Chelston Retreat in Sussex, England; and her performance with the avant-garde musician Philip Glass at The Memorial for Allen Ginsburg.

Following the videos, biographic notes and a gallery of photographs about The Chelsea Hotel are presented.

Patti Smith: The Early Years

Patti Smith was born in Chicago in 1948 and grew up in Woodbury, New Jersey. After graduating from high school, Patti did a brief stint as a factory worker, which convinced her to move to New York City to pursue a life in the arts. Soon after her arrival, she connected with the young photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, whom she met while working at a book store. This was a close friendship that she maintained until his death in 1989. In 1969 she went to Paris with her sister and started doing performance art. When Smith returned to New York City, she lived in The Chelsea Hotel with Mapplethorpe, and they began frequenting the then fashionable Max’s Kansas City and CBGB nightclubs.

She helped put New York’s punk-rock landmark CBGB on the map, at a time when New York’s East Village was becoming a burgeoning center of experimental artistic creativity. She organized The Patti Smith Group and in 1975 released her debut album, Horses, to critical acclaim. Produced by John Cale, the album was described as an original mixture of exhortatory rock & roll, Smith’s poetry, vocal mannerisms inspired by Mick Jagger and Jim Morrison, and the band’s energetically rudimentary playing. In 1976, Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas oversaw the Patti Smith Group’s second album, Radio Ethiopia, and the result was a more bombastic guitar-heavy record, tempered by the title cut, the height of Smith’s improvised free rock.

After an almost nine-year hiatus, Smith returned to recording with the 1988 album Dream of Life, the work of a more mellow, but still rebellious songwriter. Smith’s comeback album was co-produced by her husband, Fred “Sonic” Smith, with songs that included her call-to-arms, People Have the Power.

Grief and Mourning

In 1994, her husband died of a heart attack at the age of 45. Just a month later, her younger brother (and former road manager) Todd, also died of a heart attack. Her longtime friend and companion Robert Mapplethorpe had already died of AIDS in 1989. Determined to carry on as a tribute to the encouragement that her husband and brother had shown her before their passings, Smith performed a string of opening dates with Bob Dylan in late 1995 and issued the intensely personal Gone Again in 1996. The album offered a potent mix of songs about mourning and rebirth, reflecting Smith’s belief that the beauty of life survives death.

But another eight years would pass by before her second artistic comeback, marked by a trio of acclaimed albums released in quick succession, which found her fighting her way out of a period of intense personal grief stemming from the loss of several of the most important people in her life. The documentary Patti Smith: Dream of Life premiered at last year’s Sundance Film Festival and is currently opening in theaters nationwide and in Europe.

Earlier this week I was invited by Palm Pictures (who had distributed my film The Accidental Activist) to a private screening of the film Dream of Life, directed by Steven Sebring, about American Rock Icon Patti Smith.

Sebring and Smith attended the screening and entertained us all with an engaging Q&A afterward which included a number of Songs by Patti. I was not so familiar with her music – growing up in NZ – so I found out more about her when I got home and was impressed to learn the following:

Patricia Lee “Patti” Smith (born December 30, 1946) is an American singer-songwriter, poet and artist who was a highly influential component of the punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses. Called the “Godmother of Punk”,[1] she integrated the beat poetry performance style with three-chord rock. Her allusions introduced American teens to 19th century French poetry while her “unladylike” language defied the disco era. Smith is most widely known for the song “Because the Night“, which was co-written with Bruce Springsteen and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1978. In 2005, Patti Smith was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture,[2] and in 2007, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.[3]

First time director Steven Sebring, a celebrated fashion photographer, befriended Smith and filmed her over a 11 year period resulting in the Sundance award winning film Dream of Life that we enjoyed that night and a coffee table book by the same name.

Needless to say I couldn’t resist a photo op with Patti Smith and Steven Sebring along with my dear friend Deborah Schonfeld from Palm Pictures and her man Bradden Young. Congrats to Palm Pictures for a great night!
