SN: Get it? A Dash of PRO-Keds?

So I’m thinking of putting together a little LAN party/game gathering, but with consoles.

Given that 360s, PS3s, Wii’s, Xboxs, and whatever else have ethernet/wireless available, using a PC isn’t strictly needed to have a mass gathering.

I’ll be able to provide the networking gear, but depending on how many people are coming, I need to see whether this can be based in a home, or has to be at a place rented out.

The following games would probably be good for it I’m guessing: -

• Any of the Halo games (1 2 or 3)
• Borderlands (if anyone has it)
• Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
• Forza 2 and/or 3
• Gears Of War
• Burnout Paradise
• Race Driver: Grid
• Red Faction: Guerilla
• Colin Mcrae: Dirt
• I guess the Call Of Duty’s could be involved (I don’t own any of them, but could get one)

I can also work on trying to link together other systems (Dreamcasts, PS2s, etc), and have mini tournaments for those that cant be linked for everyone.

The only requirements really would be bring console, and if possible bring your own TV too, even just a 14″ CRT or something like that, as long as it works and your eyes dont burn off using it

I’m mainly looking for people receptive to the idea, to either help out, or if you just wanna be part of it, and also suggestions as to what games to play, and other stuff.

I am well versed in PC/Linux setup and networking, so in terms of an infrastructure, there is nothing to worry about there, I can set that up, hell it may even be possible to have a local version of Xbox Live/PSN, I’ll take a look into that.

You thought the DreamTrooper would be the last portablized Sega Dreamcast mod you’d ever see? Nah. Turns out some folk in China quietly showed off an Oriental take on the mod — not too dissimilar from the form factor of the GameBoy Advance — just before the DreamTrooper’s debut. Sonic has come a long way over the years, and to be honest, his age is starting to show. Back in his hay day Sonic was the man, and at one point, was outselling Mario. Now-a-days, however, he’s starting to lose his speed and Mario’s been keeping young. In his 16 bit days Sonic was on top of the world, and now he’s scratching and clawing his way to stay in the game. Sonic has even resorted to teaming up with Mario in gimmicky Wii Olympic party games just to stay on the radar. What follows is a timeline (and collection) of a handful of Sonic games that I’ve played over the years. This isn’t a complete collection of all his games because, trust me, he has a lot of games out there for many consoles and systems. This is more of a “best of” collection, if you will (excluding the newest ones—i.e. the current-gen games, they’re just necessary to include). I’ve played all the games in this list and I’m a long-time Sonic fan. This list just go to show you how long the blue blur has been around, how far he’s come, and how much he’s far he’s fallen.

1991

Sonic the Hedgehog

On the Sega console –The originator, the supposed “Mario Killer”. The best foot forward for Sega and a classic game every video game fan has or should play.

1992

Sonic 2

The second installment on the Sega Gensis. This was the first game we get to meet Sonic’s sidekick/mechanic Miles “Tails” Prower (a pun of miles per hour)

1993

Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Beam Machine

The Sonic Team’s attempt at a puzzle game. It’s essentially Puyo Puyo.

Sonic Spinball

Like the name suggests this is a Sonic pinball game. Don’t be fooled though, it’s hard.

Sonic 3

Like the Mario franchise, the third installment is arguably the best of the series. This is the first game players are able to take control of Tails (our first taste of co-op play in the Sonic series).

1994

Sonic & Knuckles

This is not only a full fledged game but it’s also an add-on to the previous Sonic games. You could actually plug one of the 3 previous games into the top of this cartridge. This is also the first game we actually get to play as Knuckles.

1995

Sonic CD

This game was for the PC and has the best intro to any Sonic game that I can remember. The intro was a quick animated short with a great song overtop. The game play stuck to the classic 2D Sonic we’re familiar with.

Knuckles Chaotix

This game was for the short lived Sega 32x (32x was like the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge but it up’d the graphics from 16bit to 32 on the Sega Gensis) Sonic wasn’t in this game but I actually owned this game so I figured I’d mention it.

1996

Sonic 3D Blast

This was the first 3D Sonic game and it was on the Gensis. This game was a failure, I suppose you could call this foreshadowing?

1997

Sonic R

This was the first Sonic Racing game, this game was also somewhat of a failure (but then again so was the Sega Saturn). 3D Sonic has a harder time with games than the 2D one.

1999

Sonic Adventure

This is how you make a 3D Sonic game. This was the staple game for the newly released Dreamcast system (at the time). This game was epic—I loved this game.

2000

Sonic Shuffle

Sega is always trying to do what Mario does, so this was Sega trying to cash in on the Mario Party series. Mario Party had 7 sequels, Sonic Shuffle has none—I wonder why? (hint: it sucked)

2001

Sonic Adventure 2

The previous game did so well, why not make another. Shadow the hedgehog was first introduced in this game. The game met with mixed reviews but personally I enjoyed the hell out of it. I’m still waiting for Sonic Adventure 3 to be honest with you.

2004

Sonic Heroes

This may be harsh but I feel like every 3D Sonic game from here on out were more or less terrible. Sega quit the console business and just stuck to making games so this game was a multiplatform release (Xbox and PS2). You took control of 3 characters at once, switching between the 3 throughout. There was multiple teams to choose from but this gimmick, unfortunately, didn’t help this game.

2006

Sonic the Hedgehog

This is Sonic’s first step into the current generations of consoles. This game was terribly frustrating. The load times in this game were torturous and Sonic made out with a human. Just because an animal can talk doesn’t mean it’s ok to let them kiss humans (especially in a game for kids). Just like bestiality, this game is just wrong.

2007

Sonic and the Secret Rings

This is the first game that game out with the new Wii Nintendo System. Just like most of the games for the Wii, this game is just one big gimmick. Just because I have to waggle some dumb controller rather than press a button doesn’t make this some new fresh Sonic game. To be fair through, this game wasn’t as terrible as the aforementioned one, so it’s not that bad of a game considering.

2008

Sonic Unleashed

This is the latest game release for Sonic and maybe the weirdest. I hear this game did well with a younger audience (which is who they make these games for) but I’m a little ashamed of this game. It’s hard to sell the same game to people so usually developers try to through something new into the mix to spice things up. In this game Sonic turned into a warehog with stretchy arms at night. I don’t have much else to say about this game, it’s absurdity leaves me speechless.

Wer in den späten 90ern bereits begeisterter Videospielezocker und Fan von Sonys PSX war, der wird sich noch an den kommerziellen Playstation Emulator bleem! und die vielen Kontroversen die ihn umgeben haben erinnern. Der Hintergrund: dadurch, dass nun plötzlich Sonys Spiele außerhalb von Sonys Hardware laufen konnte bestand nun keine Notwendigkeit mehr sich eine Playstation zu kaufen, was für Sony natürlich ein riesiges Verlustgeschäft bedeutet hätte.

Die Geschichte von bleem! beginnt im März 1999, mit dem Release der ersten Version. Und sie schlug ein wie eine Bombe. bleem! hatte nämlich den heutigen Emulatoren einiges voraus. Es war der erste Emulator, der praktisch mit der echten Konsole “konkurrierte” und dazu noch einer der wenigen, der öffentlich dafür warb und im Laden gekauft werden konnte. bleem! hatte zwei Versionen, einmal die normale, die auf PCs lief, und bleemcast!, welches euch ermöglichte, PSX Spiele auf der Dreamcast von Sega zu zocken.

Die Technik hinter bleem! war dabei durchaus beeindruckend, vor allem im PC Sektor. Man brauchte keine Mördermaschine, denn teilweise lieferten sogar Low-End PCs erstaunlich hohe Frameraten für die PSX Spiele. Verantwortlich dafür ist die Programmiersprache assembly, die es den anfangs gerade mal zwei Mitarbeitern der Firma bleem! ermöglichte, den Code perfekt zu optimieren. Und wer doch einen Rechner der oberen Klasse sein Eigen nennen durfte, der konnte mithilfe des Emulators sogar die Grafik der Spiele aufpeppen, indem er höhere Auflösungen als auf der PSX möglich aktivierte oder bessere Texturfilter einschaltete.

Die Kehrseite der Medaille ist jedoch, die Spiele überhaupt erst einmal fehlerfrei zum laufen zu bekommen. Denn während heutige Emulatoren eine sehr hohe Kompatibilitätsrate erreicht haben, kämpfte bleem! mit Bugs, Grafikfehlern und dergleichen. Sogar bleems! eigene Kompatibilitätsliste konnte lediglich ein einziges bugfreies Spiel aufweisen: One. Das heißt aber nicht, dass kein Spiel vernünftig lief, die meisten konnten Problemlos von Anfang bis Ende durchgezockt werden, kleinere Fehler musstet ihr dafür aber in Kauf nehmen. Das sorgte dafür, dass sogar freeware Emulatoren, die es bereits vor bleem! gab, teilweise eine höhere Kompatibilität hatten. Ein weiteres Problem: wer Windows NT basierte Betriebssysteme hatte (dazu gehört auch Windows 2000), guckte in die Röhre. bleem! wurde nämlich vollends für Windows 98 entwickelt, dem damals wichtigsten Betriebssystem für Computerspieler.

Klingt ja alles schön und gut. Doch wie bereits am Anfang dieses Artikels erwähnt stellte der Emulator für Sony eine erhebliche Gefahr da. Und so ist es wenig überraschend, dass, kaum konnten die ersten Versionen des Emulators bestellt werden, Sony seine Anwälte einschaltete. Denn wer will sich noch eine Playstation kaufen, wenn das ganze auch auf Dreamcast und PC funktioniert? Das Verbot das Emulators war eigentlich nur noch Formsache, konnte sich doch keiner vorstellen dass bleem! einfach so davonkommen würde. Doch falsch gedacht! Am Ende verlor Sony in sämtlichen Anklagepunkten, sogar was die Verwendung von PSX Spielescreenshots auf der bleem! Verpackung angeht. David hatte tatsächlich gegen Goliath gewonnen, konnte man meinen.

Doch trotz der Erfolge vor Gericht zwangen die Kosten dafür die Firma letztendlich doch in die Knie. Ende 2001 gingen bei bleem! die Lichter aus. Doch trotzdem hat bleem! vielen gezeigt, dass auch Emulatoren eine Daseinsberechtigung haben. Viele Hobby Programmierer haben sich seit dem Ende von bleem! an die Arbeit gemacht, einen noch besseren, schnelleren und stabileren Emulator auf die Beine zu stellen. Und nebenbei sollte man auch erwähnen, dass die Emulatoren an sich völlig legal sind. Erst wenn man sie in Verbindung mit illegal heruntergeladenen Spielen benutzt begibt man sich auf dünnes Eis. Übrigens, um den Kreis zu schließen: ein paar ehemalige bleem! Mitarbeiter sind heute bei Sony beschäftigt wo sie sich, natürlich, um die Portierung alter Sony Spiele für die neue Generation der Playstation kümmern. Feine Sache!

I’d say at least three times a week I browse through nearly everything offered instantly from Netflix.  Typically there’s a heavy glass of red wine sitting next to me on my floor – that needs to be vacuumed with something of industrial strength – that I’ll get to once I put my X-Box controller down.  My intention is to see what is new on “instant watch” and then start buffering up a movie that hopefully doesn’t suck.  A good lot of the time I browse for too long then flash through my queue and can’t decide on any one thing.  Why?  Too many options.  I’ll even work together with my roommate Jordan to widdle down the choices, but usually I give up and head to my room for a comic or two before bed.

Sometimes too much is just too much.

I was born in ‘84 and I’ve seen the Super Nintendo (de)evolve into the Dreamcast then grow wings and become the 360.  Without having to read and recite a book about science, I’m saying that I’ve witnessed technology grow exponentially.  Today I have the option to watch hundreds of movies with the flick of joystick and a little pressure applied to a brightly colored button.  Oh, Band McMusic just re-released their live EP from the secret show they played in Hungary – circa ‘98 – during that accidental aerial bombardment from NATO Y-Wing.  ”Type type type” then “click click click” and I have that album sitting on my desktop.  It’s obvious that we’re spoiled when it comes to the entertainment that’s a hyperlink away and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

X-Box Live just added Last FM as an application for it’s fancy Gold Members – who pay 40 some dollars a year – and are given many more reasons to never bask in natural light.  Not that this invention is anything new to the interwebs, but I can pick an artist, make a station via that artist, and listen to music within the same vein of said artist.  I know, this sounds like the radio if you were able to put it under the microscope and manipulate what you wanted from it.  It is, but sometimes it’s just too much.

When I was a kid I had the radio, a small book of CDs, and the local Video Barn for entertainment.  I was content too.  As the years have passed and I now put onions on nearly every sandwich I make, it’s obvious my likes and dislikes have expanded.  My Mom would slice onions in our kitchen back home and just the scent was enough to keep me away from our downstairs for hours.  What used to sate or deter me as a child isn’t the case anymore.  Now I need three new movies in the mail twice a week to keep me from clawing at the walls.  There has to be a refresher from some new band I’ve never heard – or given any time to – at least a couple times a month, otherwise I start biting my nails down to the cuticle.  I’m American, I drink beer out of the can, and I need to be fucking entertained 24 hours out of the God damn day.  Yeah, it’s true.

I think I kinda lost my train of thought at some point in this rant, so I’ll get to some kind of point.

We used to worship idols made of stone and wood then men who said they were actual gods filled in that spot.  After that we started to hear these stories from wise elders about these powerful beings that have always been and will always be, so it was the smart choice to praise them.  Now we have the internet.  The internet knows all, tells all, and does all.  What else do we need?  If this laptop I’m typing on had a vagina built into it, could pour alcohol out one of it’s many ports, and ejected the makings for a sandwich from the CD drive… yup, wouldn’t leave the house.

I could go on with this, but I’d probably end up running my words and thoughts into solid wall of nonsense, which would most likely drive me to making dick and fart jokes.  Let me save you from that and tell you about some music you should be listening to.

1. Bang Maiden, they’re from San Francisco (make some unjustified generalizations from that fact alone because that’s what I’d do).  On Halloween last month they played their first show at The Parkside in the Misson and they definitely fit the bill if you wanna drink, dance, and bang your head.  They just uploaded a three song demo EP for download and I’m a fan.  Hardcore  - and whatever sub-genre within the same realm you babble about – is one of those sounds that’s in a bit of a slump as of late.  Don’t get me wrong, there are many greats acts currently putting out original and good tunes, but the majority is nothing more than the same old riffs that started in the ’80s, got reworked in the ’90s, and has continued the same cycle into the 2000’s.  What do these guys have that sets them apart from the fodder?  They don’t have drums, they got beats.  Patrick is the programming wizard in the three-piece that mixes the backbone of sound , which gives the group an artificial rhythm that is danceable… like boner-jams danceable.  It’s not too often you can listen to something that cuts a rug all Samurai Shodown 2 (I suck at that game), yet urges your veins to replace some of that red with drunk and maybe punch some random, all in good fun of course.  It’s dirty and fun, so give it a listen, go get tested afterwards, and pay me the ten bucks you owe.

2. Now these guys just got dredged out of the dungeon – I call it my iPod – and put a real dumb smile on my face.  Since the mammoth performance I witnessed a while back at the West Seattle Legion Hall, Giant became Brave Young, but the sound hasn’t changed a bit.  I’ve been allowing my music to grow a little more grand these days (drugs are bad), so the music I’m seeking needs to consume me and wall me up inside of it.  Brave Young is an undertaking that weighs on your ear drums with its heavy guitars and bass.  The sound becomes one looming entity that is lumbering with each bang of the drums and it’s one voice roars just far enough from the instruments before it melds back into the mass of noise.  This is one of those bands that I may never see live again, but from that one show – whatever summer it was ago – I feel lucky.

3. Oh yeah, I’m doing it.  Oingo Boingo has been the musical “first ice cold beer of the day” for me lately.  It’s fun, it’s upbeat, it can get a little spooky, and it’s one of those aspects of the ’80s that I don’t hate.  I’m not saying the 80’s were horrible, I mean come on, Earth Girls Are Easy?  You don’t have to say anything, just try not to get lost in Jeff Goldblum’s eyes, even though he does have mind powers.  There really isn’t any reason for me to explain any further.  Fire this shit up and let Danny Elfman do the rest.  Watch this too:

Format: Dreamcast Genre: Fishing Released: 1999 Developer: Sega

I love this game because it’s just such an unlikely concept: who’d have thought fishing could be so much fun? It’s a bit like the TV show Late Night Poker – explain the concept to someone and they’ll probably roll their eyes in boredom, but when you see it in action you suddenly find yourself addicted. Likewise with Sega Bass Fishing – get past the naff-sounding concept and one go is all you need to get you hooked (sorry).

The best bit about the whole game is the sampled speech – I’ve no idea where they found the guy who does the voiceover, but he’s absolutely priceless. I’ve never heard anyone strangle the English language in quite such a fantastic and delightful way as he does – just click on the video below and have a listen to him say “select a casting point” to hear what I mean. The best bit is when you catch a big fish, which triggers a crescendo of J-pop guitar riffs followed by the voiceover guy excitedly booming “WOOOAH!!! A BIG ONE!!!” as your avatar struggles under the weight of an enormous bass.

The game is so dependent on sound that if you took away the wonderfully over-the-top music and speech, I reckon the game’s appeal would easily be halved. The act of reeling in a fish would actually be quite dull without the blare of hyperactive guitars reverberating in your ears and some ambiguously accented narrator demanding that you “LOWER THE ROD!!!” (with ‘rod’ pronounced ‘raaard’). Perhaps real-life fishermen would do well to hire someone to stand behind them and excitedly comment on everything they’re doing – it might make the time pass quicker.

In addition to the sound, the other main appeal of this game is of course the motion-sensitive fishing rod controller (dubbed the ‘Fission Controller’ by some wag). Motion control is two-a-penny now, but it was a real novelty back in 1999, and anyone who saw me playing with my rod would often be astonished by its capabilities (sorry, couldn’t resist). I seem to remember that the controller wasn’t all that sensitive, and it was certainly nowhere near as responsive as the Wii controllers, but it did the job well enough. And let’s face it, the game wouldn’t be half as much fun without the plastic fishing rod.

Speaking of which, has anyone played the Wii version? I’ve been very tempted to buy it for old time’s sake, but I’m not convinced that it would be quite the same without the proper controller…

Of course, the game wasn’t without its down sides. The chief disappointment was that it became repetitive quite quickly, although this was diminished somewhat by the ability to unlock extra lures. Even so, the game was quite limited in that it only had three levels (actually, I think it was four including the special stage) and just one type of fish to catch – after hours and hours of fishing for bass I was crying out for a bit of variety (“A perch! A perch! My kingdom for a perch!” etc.).

That said, the game had excellent pick-up-and-play appeal, and I found myself dipping into the arcade mode again and again, long after I’d grown tired of most of my other Dreamcast games. A true classic.

O jogo tem lançamento no ocidente em 9 de março de 2010. Final Fantasy XIII tera lançamento para Playstation 3 e Xbox 360, sendo o foco do jogo nas emoções dos personagens, com um novo sistema de batalha e novos heróis e heroínas.

I went and visited Super Potato up in Akihabara.  It’s the spot for all the 8/16-bit, Retro gaming fanatics.  Their collection of consoles and games will bring you back to a time when your parents would give you a run for your lunch money.  It’s crazy to see the evolution of gaming from what it was then to what it is now…

Achat du week end: un bon vieux Crazy Taxi pour remplacer ma vieillissante copie de sauvegarde (qui avait lui même remplacé mon disparu jeu original!!! T_T ).

Cela faisait un moment que je le cherchais celui là, j’avais même failli l’acheter sur ebay plusieurs fois! Mais c’était un peu cher en général (et parfois beaucoup trop cher!!!)

Seulement 4,90 € la pépite! Et plutôt en bon état (la boîte est intacte, même pas un bitoniau cassé!!!). La surface à lire du CD était pleine de microrayures, mais j’ai tenté le coup quand même (après tout, au pire, je l’aurais ramené au magasin!!!)

J’ai enfin eu le temps de l’essayer ce matin, et oh joie!!!

people are confused on what a gamer is the simple fact that you play video games in no way factors a gamer a gamer or better put “hardcore” gamer is a person dedicated to games and gaming culture  not just in between madden releases to put the argument in the best perspective we must point out the deference’s between a gamer and a player a gamer is part of a world endowed in the quote on quote nerd community were the word originated in a separation from people who play the games and who  is commitment to the art form and has genuine love for the medium as lines became unclear these gamers were renamed hardcore gamers as players sometimes call themselves hardcore for the fact they play more mature titles and need visual stimulation of violence to accepted  a great game these gamers in the hardcore gamers community are knows as gore gamers not to be confused with the sub genre of core gamers  most of the hardcore gamers in the original term follow classic games games with great story fantasy action and complex gameplay in the modern universe games are as diverse and complex as the world its self we have hardcore in both uses of the word arcade casual music indie core and gore as the Pangaea of the world of gaming begins to expand break away and grow you see more genres and gamers emerge for a art form so young and coming so far from its roots in sonar testing to the first cabinet pong to the first Atari shipped to open the doors for the golden age of arcades to the nes re sparking not only game markets but a new generation of true gamer giving birth to the PlayStation and n64 as we bid farewell to beloved sega and one of the innovative consoles with the dreamcast out of production since 2001 yet still have legions of hardcore gamers now home brewing games and keeping the dream alive that is the spirit of a gamer someone who see more than cheap thrills money and media tycoons annual releases and million dollar deals but sees that games can change lives bring unparalleled joy understanding and self reflections games are so much more than a sixty dollar blu ray movie with inter actual features but a world that lets your mind fly and detach from worldly problems if only for the time being with no disrespect to the bulk but to us this is as real as you or me i love the games and i love the art and brings you to ask your self why do you play and what does it mean to you to the gamers the hardcore gamers i say goodnight and game on

Olha que bacana, para representar os nove círculos, de acordo com o  Omelete,  a EA e a produtora Film Roman chamaram varios estúdios para animar cada cenário. Joe Goyette esta na produção e Victor Cook, conhecido pelas animações de Hellboy, dirige.

Bom…voltando ao assunto

Depois de sair o filme, querem ressurgir aquele espírito que existia em que cada nerd que era fã de Star treck e  queria sua própria nave (principalmente os que falam Klingon rsrs).

Para isso, a  Cryptic e a Atari mostraram um novo vídeo para deixar os fãs de Star Trek loucos. trata-se do novo MMORPGs Star Trek Online, video este dedicado a uma das raças favoritas dos fãs, os Klingons!

Da uma olhada no game…

O game para PCs deve chegar às lojas em fevereiro de 2010.

Particularmente eu gostaria que volta-se essa febre em star Treck (mas acho difícil), os tempos são outros, mas é bacana para quem não conhece esse universo tão rico e criativo que é Star Treck. Mas tenho que admitir que eu gostava mais de Star Wars do que de Star Treck rsrs mas gostava dos dois rs.

Apesar de toscas hoje, as lutas na época eram dramáticas rs (serio pra época eram rsrs). Cara eu não esqueço a treta que teve entre Spock e o Capitão Kirk
