Dreamlinux will automatically detect your device and mount it.

root@mars:~# cd /mnt/auto/

List the files

dr-xr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Aug 12 07:59 sda1

The directory sda1 refers to your thumbdrive. Simple as that.

Exploring SSH in Dreamlinux 2.2

In this exercise, you will need a ssh server and a ssh client. I have assigned Ubuntu as my ssh server while Dreamlinux takes the role of a ssh client.

On the SSH server

root@ismailrocks:~# ps -ef | grep ssh

root 4598 1 0 09:27 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/sshd

root 5099 5061 0 09:27 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/ssh-agent x-session-manager

The above results shows that the sshd service which is the ssh server service is running.

root@mars:~# ssh 172.18.0.2

root@172.18.0.2’s password:

Last login: Fri Jul 31 10:28:03 2009 from 172.16.0.2

Linux ismailrocks 2.6.22-16-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 00:07:52 GMT 2009 i686

To run a command as administrator (user “root”), use “sudo <command>”.

See “man sudo_root” for details.

root@ismailrocks:~#

Secure Copy is ssh

I will secure copy a document from the Ubuntu server to the Dreamlinux server.

root@mars:~# scp root@172.18.0.2:/root/Documents/ubuntu_wireless.doc .

root@172.18.0.2’s password:

ubuntu_wireless.doc 100% 116KB 6.4KB/s 00:18

Now let’s change roles. The Dreamlinux will be the ssh server, while the Ubuntu server takes on the role of a ssh client.

You will need to start the sshd service on the Dreamlinux, if it is not started.

root@mars:~# /usr/sbin/sshd

Type the following to check sshd is running.

root@mars:~# ps -ef|grep sshd

root 4151 1 0 15:51 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/sshd

Now from the ssh client, in my case the Ubuntu server, ssh into the Dreamlinux server.

root@ismailrocks:~# ssh 172.16.0.2

root@172.16.0.2’s password:

Last login: Tue Aug 11 15:31:48 2009

Linux mars 2.6.18.1-kanotix-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT Wed Nov 29 15:15:15 EST 2006 i686

So we successfully ssh into the Dreamlinux server.

X11 Forwarding

You can launch X applications like gedit, xmms, cdp xeyes, xclock on your remote host but the applications will appear on your local machine.

On local host, Dreamlinux, check that X11 forwarding is enable.

root@mars:/etc/ssh# grep -i forward ssh_config

# ForwardAgent no

ForwardX11 yes

ForwardX11Trusted yes

If yours is not enable, edit the file and make the necessary changes

On remote host, Ubuntu, you will also need to enable X11 forwaring.

Now we are set to experiment on X11 forwaring.

On local host, Dreamlinux, type:

root@mars:/etc/ssh# ssh -X 172.18.0.2

Simply replace the IP address with your owmn machine.

root@mars:/mnt/auto# ssh -X 172.18.0.2

root@172.18.0.2’s password:

Last login: Tue Aug 11 16:45:51 2009 from 172.16.0.2

Linux ismailrocks 2.6.22-16-generic #1 SMP Mon Jan 26 00:07:52 GMT 2009 i686

Now type:

root@ismailrocks:~# xterm &

You will see an xterm window appears on your screen.

insert screenshot

You can control the DVD tray, play mp3 and video files and many more.

Note: If you want the applications to appear on the remote site instead on your local machine, you have to export the DISPLAY variable.

On the remote site, type:

export DISPLAY=:0.0

Now at the local site, in the xterm which already has a ssh connection to the remote site, type xeyes. You will see that xeyes will appear on the remote site.

In this exercise, the telnet server is the Ubuntu server and the Dreamlinux server will be the telnet client. So the title for this section should read “Configuring telnet server in Ubuntu”. There is nothing to be configured on the telnet client, other than having the telnet client script called telnet Anyway this is how we configure telnet server in Ubuntu.

Now let’s telnet into this Ubuntu telnet server from another server, in my case, the Dreamlinux server. But before that it’s interesting to check that tenetd is not running on the telnet server. To see this, type:

root@ismailrocks:/etc/init.d# ps -ef|grep telnetd

root 6938 5571 0 15:22 pts/0 00:00:00 grep telnetd

You will see that telnetd is not running, and you don’t have to start it. This is because the inetd service will start once it receives a telnet connection from other terminals.

Now telnet to the telnet server.

root@ismailrocks:/etc/init.d# telnet 192.168.1.100

On the telnet server you can check that the telnet server service, telnetd is started automaticaly by inetd. To see this type:

ismail@ismailrocks:~$ ps -ef|grep telnetd

Ok let’s now reverse role, Ubuntu becomes the telnet client and Dreamlinux becomes the telnet server.

On the Dreamlinux, check that openbsd-inetd (also known as the internet superserver), which handles the telnet requests.

For ftp to work, the ftp server, in this case, the Ubuntu server needs to run the ftp server services. On my Ubuntu server, I have installed proftp. To see of the ftp server service is running, type:

root@ismailrocks:~# ps -ef|grep ftp

proftpd 4882 1 0 09:27 ? 00:00:00 proftpd: (accepting connections)

If your proftpd is not running, you will need to start it. The location tostart the proftpd service is at :

root@ismailrocks:/etc/init.d# ./proftpd

Usage: /etc/init.d/proftpd {start|force-start|stop|force-stop|reload|restart|force-reload}

As for the ftp client, you will need the ftp client program. This is normally installed by default. Check its existence by typing

root@mars:~# which ftp

/usr/bin/ftp

FTP from Dreamlinux server to Ubuntu server

root@mars:~# ftp 172.18.0.2

Connected to 172.18.0.2.

220 ProFTPD 1.3.0 Server (Debian) [::ffff:172.18.0.2]

Name (172.18.0.2:root): ismail

331 Password required for ismail.

Password:

230 User ismail logged in.

Remote system type is UNIX.

ftp> pwd

257 “/home/ismail” is current directory.

ftp>

Yes this shows that the ftp connection is successful. Try to put and get some files between the terminals.

Ok now let’s reverse the roles: Dreamlinux will be the ftp server and Ubuntu, the ftp client.

Firstly install the proftpd package on the Dreamlinux

# apt-get install proftpd

After you had installed the package, start the ftp server.

root@mars:/etc/init.d# ./proftpd start

You can start ftp server as standalone, as in my case or you can start it as a internet superserver in inetd.

root@mars:/etc/init.d# ./proftpd status

ProFTPd is started in standalone mode, currently running.

Test the ftp

root@mars:/etc/init.d# ftp 172.16.0.2

Connected to 172.16.0.2.

220 ProFTPD 1.3.1 Server (Debian) [::ffff:172.16.0.2

Name (172.16.0.2:root): ismail

331 Password required for ismail

Password:

230 User ismail logged in

Remote system type is UNIX.

Using binary mode to transfer files.

ftp> pwd

257 “/home/ismail” is the current directory

Thus the ftp is working fine.

This is the configuration file to set the network settings if you are using broadband modem i.e. you should set its IP address as DHCP.

root@mars:~# less /etc/network/interfaces

### Network settings #####

auto lo

iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

auto eth0

Alternatively you can also set it by using the GUI. Click on the DCP-Control Panel and launch Network Admin.. But sometimes, Dreamlinux failed to lauch the GUI. So another method is to type:

root@mars:~# network-admin

If there are error messages displayed, ignore them. The Network Settings window will pop up and you can set the network settings.

If you are setting the IP address for LAN, you have to use static IP address. Edit the /etc/network/interfaces file as show below.

root@mars:~# vi /etc/network/interfaces

Unetbootin is a usefully tool that allows you to create Live USB drives, yummy! Its available for th

Unetbootin is a usefully tool that allows you to create Live USB drives, yummy! Its available for the use on a linux box or a windows box.

UNetbootin has built-in support for downloading and installing the following distributions:

Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian,PC linux OS, Sabayon,Linux Mint, Gentoo, Mepis,Open SUSE, Zenwalk, Slax, Dreamlinux, Elive, Arch Linux, Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux, Cent OS, SliTaz, Mandriva,gNewSense, Faun OS, Free BSD, NetBSD, and finally Frugalware Linux.

Windows:

The installation for windows is really easy and typical of any other program installation on a windows machine.

Once you have a window like the above illustration you follow the next four steps.

It convinient/smart to plug in the usb drive you want to use before you start unetbootin.

1. Choose the distribution and version

2. Since we are choosing the distribution option we just skip over to the bottom were we see “type”. Under type we always choose USB Drive.

Warning : Be careful what USB drive letter you choose. Make sure it is the actual flash drive you want to use as your LIVE USB.

3. Choose your usb driver letter and press OK. Now the distribution iso is being downloaded and the other files need to make your USB to be come “LIVE”.

4. Once the installation is complete, restart the your computer and make sure to select to boot from USB in your computer BIOS. If you dont know how to do that use google.com and look up “how to boot from USB”

The Linux version of Unetbootin comes pakaged in either a .deb or .rpm files, and tar.gz. Depending on which system you have and which you’d like to install. The packages available as of now are for Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, openSUSE, CentOS, Arch Linux, Slackware, and Debian.

more about "untitled", posted with vodpod

Linux:

The installation of unetbootin on a debian machine is pretty easy.

It convinient/smart to plug in the usb drive you want to use before you start unetbootin.

Download the .deb file from http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/.

These steps are assuming that you have downloaded the .deb file in the desktop.

Open a terminal and type:

cd /file location

in our case

cd /home/yourusername/Desktop

our final step would be

sudo dpkg -i pakagename.deb

but in our case (since our file is in the desktop)

sudo dpkg -i unetbootin_323-1_i386.deb

once that is done we can continue to the main steps
